Evaluation Q1. In what ways
does your media product
use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of
real media products?
EMILY HOWLETT
Relationship of lyrics to
narrative/visuas
The top image has been taken from our music video. This visual
has a relationship to the lyrics ‘gotta let it out’. As you can see,
the visuals is a makeup bag which is being emptied and the
makeup is being ‘let out’. This links to Barthes semiotic theory
where visuals have a link to the song lyrics, making it more
understandable for an audience.
The bottom image has been taken from Beyoncé's new song
7/11. The visual shows the artist holding dice in her mouth which
emphasises the lyrics of the song at the time of this visual. This is
also a semiotic visual.
Relationship of music to visuals
The top image has been taken from our music video and is an
image of one of the artists foot kicking the camera. We have
edited this shot to make the visual match the beat of the music.
We did this by speeding up the shot using the editing tools.
This shot has been taken from ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars
and Mark Ronson. This is the beginning of their video and the
visual shows a woman walking to the beat of the music. This is
very similar to our shot as the footage would have been
edited to fit to the beat of the music.
Representation of band
The top image has been taken from our music video and shows
a visual representation of our band. This is very common in music
videos created by bands, this is to show the audience who has
produced the song playing. We have used a range of lighting
on each artist which could represent different personalities in
the band. This can often be seen in music videos.
For example, Little Mix have used different hair colours/styles
along with different style costumes. They have done this to
represent the different artists in the group and how their
personalities differ. However the differences between the band
members work together as a group.
Genre of music and how it is defined
The top image has been taken from our music video and I think it
defines our music genre which is teen pop. Our genre is also
performance based and this image shows one of our band
members performing part of the song. She is wearing a black and
white dress and surrounded by a black back ground. She is also
holding a microphone showing the audience she is performing.
This image has been taken from an artist named Amerie. The
image is of the artist performing her song in a similar way we have
done. The difference being the background and chosen outfit. I
can tell she is performing through the band in the background as
she does not have a microphone in hand.
Lighting
The top image which has been taken from our music video
shows that a range of lighting has been used. Kerry is performing
in this shot and we decided that using this low key yet bright
lighting has helped our video use conventions of real media
products.
Here is another shot from a Little Mix music video. Similar lighting
has been used here and this is how I can see that my group and
I have used conventions of real media products.
Setting/ Location/mis-en-scene
Here is an image taken from our main media product of
Sophie in France. We have used a range of locations in our
music video which we thought would suit our song and
choice of genre. We thought using different locations
would reflect the song lyrics and their meanings. Our song
is all about not stopping and to keep moving so using
different locations would be appropriate. The mis-en-scene
makes this shot very interesting I think as it is very busy and
helps to show the location a little better. For example in the
background you can see the arc-de-triumph. This is a very
exciting location and links back to the lyrics and meaning
of the song which is also about love.
For this shot we have taken inspiration from Kanye West’s
song ‘lights’. We have used similar framing for this shot and
managed to use similar lighting. It is dark and has bright
lighting in the background to make the focus on the artist.
Camera work/editing/mis-en-scene
This shot shows Sophie and I on a beach. We have used the
green screen to create this effect to show a different
location to emphasise the song meaning. We decided to
do this to show us moving around to different places and
the fantasy of moving. The shot does not look realistic but
this also helps to emphasise our fantasies.
We too inspiration from katy perry’s music video ‘California
girls’. She too has used a green screen to produce a
particular setting and mis-en-scene. This also does not look
realistic but is showing someone's dream.
Influence from real existing products
Looking at other music videos for inspiration, we decided
to use split screening to keep the audience interested. We
decided this would be a good idea as it is a different way
to produce a shot to an audience. It can also show many
things happening at one time, this can be very useful
when showing a narrative.
Again we took inspiration for this from a ‘Little Mix’ video
when it showed all the artists together. We thought the
framing was very effective and worked well and therefore
decided to use this. Our split screen did not look as
professional but we did what we could with the editing
software.
conclusion
 Overall I believe we have conformed to existing media products after
taking a lot of inspiration from existing music video’s. I think that this was
the best way to create our video as we know that similar videos have
worked well in the past and been successful at targeting their audiences.
We wanted to make sure that we did target our audience to make a
successful video.
