1. Evaluation Activity 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products (i.e.
music videos)
A. Within our music video
B. Within other music videos
By Jessica Ball and
Jack Kite
2. 1. A shot that shows a link between
lyrics and/or music and visuals
This image (taken in the local park) shows our main character having an
argument with his girlfriend. At this point the lyrics are “my three words have
two meanings”. This links with the visuals as this is the aftermath of them
three words, and the girlfriend taking it the wrong way. This does not happen
very often in our music video, as our narrative does not always relate
specifically to the lyrics.
3. 2. A shot that typifies the way a record
company would want their artist to be
represented
This image typifies the way the record company would want their artist to be
presented as it depicts the artist to be fashionable and edgy. This shot in
particular shows his entire outfit, which was picked out to show the artist to
be fashionable and up to date.
4. 3. A shot that illustrates how your
video uses music genre
This shot is of the main male holding his girlfriends hand. This is typical of
a pop song that has an element of romance, as a close of them holding
hands portrays the relationship between the two. This also links with the
song as the main line is “I’m gonna pick up the pieces and build a lego
house” which this shot shows he has done.
5. 4. A shot that shows an intertextual
reference
The supermarket scene is very common within a music video of this nature.
The male resorting to alcohol as a form of comfort. This type of shot shows a
large amount of alcohol and him searching to find the one with the highest
alcohol percentage.
6. 5. A shot that demonstrates your use
of camera
The camera styles we mainly use are pan or tracking shots. This shot here is
an example of a tracking shot. Here we wanted to make the shot as smooth as
possible whilst still keeping up with the male artist. This shots show the
effectiveness of natural lighting
7. 6. A shot that demonstrates your use
of lighting
This shot is a good example of where lighting has been used and is very
effective. This shot has the natural light of the sun reflecting on the lake
and onto the artists face. We felt that this reflected the narrative better
than artificial light as it relates to him reflecting on his life.
8. 7. A shot that demonstrates your use
of mise-en-scene
This shot clearly shows the location of the main artist to be in the
comfort of his own home. Not only does it show this is also shoes his
clothing, as well a him drinking vodka. This shows that he is drinking
away him problems behind closed doors.
9. 8. Two shots which you feel
demonstrate something which shows
you have watched other music videos
In other music videos they tend to start off with an establishing shot o
the main location. Our establishing shot shows the forest where the
artist spends the majority of his time in the video, and shows that this is
the place where he feels he can think.
10. It has also appeared the be common that they main artist in other
pop genres music videos always looks out at his location, and over the
shoulder shots are a good way to do this. This shot shows the main
artist looking over the lake that forms the basis of the video and
reminiscing.
11. 1. A shot that shows a link between
lyrics and/or music and visuals
This shot is from Ed Sheeran’s ‘A Team’ music video. This links the lyrics
with visuals as when this shot happens, the lyrics are ‘white lips, pale face’
of which the actress fits well with.
12. 2. A shot that typifies the way a record
company would want their artist to be
represented
This shot is taken from Coolios ‘Gangstas Paradise’ music video. From the
name of the song it is clear that the song is about gangstas. The record label
portray the artist as this by shooting him smoking, wearing dark glasses and
having him in dark lighting to highlight the nature of him.
13. 3. A shot that illustrates how a video
uses music genre
This shot is from My Chemical Romance’s video of ‘I’m Not Alone’. This music
video is very emo, and heavy. To illustrate this genre the use of dark make up
around the eyes, along with dark long hair on a male and black clothing is
used, as this is the emo fashion.
14. 4. A shot that shows an intertextual
reference
This shot shows an intertextual reference, as the song ‘Drunk’ by Ed Sheeran
is all about memories, of which this shot of photographs on the wall links
with. This shot shows the man to be lonely as he is sat alone with a cat, and
looking at pictures from his past,
15. 5. A shot that demonstrates use of
camera
One Direction’s ‘Night Changes’ is based around the boys going on dates,
therefore the camera movement is all done to make them look like they are
with someone. This is a good example of a shot showing this and throughout
the cameras movement needs to be smooth to show a ‘go pro’ effect.
16. 6. A shot that demonstrates use of
lighting
This shot is taken from Taylor Swift’s music video for ‘Shake It Off’. This
demonstrates the use of lighting, as they are all wearing shiny outfits which
benefit from the lighting which is being used. The glasses also look a lot
better with the bright white lighting and by having a blacl background the
artist and dancers stand out.
17. 7. A shot that demonstrates use of
mise-en-scene
This is taken from A Day to Remembers ‘A Day to Remember’. The use of
mise-en-scene clearly establishes the location from the offset, which later
links with the bands clothing and hair styles, due to the lighting and style of
the mise-en-scene.
18. 8. Two shots which you feel
demonstrate something which shows
you have watched other music videos
This shot is taken from Ed Sheeran’s ‘Small Bump’ music video and shows the
main artist sitting down lip syncing. This is something that show that we have
watched other music videos as it links with the lip syncing moments when our
main artist is sat on the bench singing, to show the emotion through minimal
movement.
19. This shot is taken from Beyonce’s ‘Listen’ music video. This proves that we
have watched other music videos, as an establishing shot is present in our
music video. With this song this is the venue where the majority of the music
video takes place. For our music video the establishing shot is of the lake and
trees which is the main place our music video takes place.
