A Career In The Deaf Community
My career goal is to become an interpreter for the deaf and HOH particularity in the performing arts districts in the Metropolitan Area of Washington,
DC. In 10 years, I imagine myself interpreting for aspiring deaf performers and encouraging my community to become deaf friendly by providing great
service and establishing educational Workshops.
Currently, I work as an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Specialist for Naval Sea Systems Command, at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC. Part
of my duties is interpreter coordinating for contractors to provide my customers with support on specific subject matters. In order to better serve my
clients, I conduct in–person service surveys and attend silent lunches. I am the only bilingual (English and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Allowing the community to identify me, as a valued member is my goal. I realize obtaining this new goal would a costly task. Money, time, and
energy must all be vested to guarantee success. I also had the responsibility of honoring the ASL language, deaf history, and its development. Like
most cultures, it is evolving so I must be willing to stay present by learning new terminology, national news, and slang in both hearing and deaf
worlds. Gallaudet is the place to be to experience the best these of two

Civil War Weapons Technology
Research Paper on Civil War Weapons and Technology The American Civil War, lasting from 1861 to 1865, was one of the bloodiest wars that the
world has ever seen. The number of casualties resulting from the Civil War was a staggering six–hundred and twenty–thousand American soldiers.
Although there are many explanations as to why the Civil War was so murderous, such as disease or lack of medical advancements, the main reason
why it was so deadly was because of the newly introduced technology and weaponry. Some of the new technologies that came about during the Civil
War were rifles, railroads, ironclad ships, and submarines. Each of the four devices had a unique history and were used significantly in specific battles,
which in turn, affected... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, the majority of the U.S. Navy supported the Union. This left the Confederates with little naval strength. At
this time, all naval ships were made out of wood, so in order to give themselves more of an advantage over the Union, the Confederates began to
assemble ironclads or purchase ironclads from other countries. In response, the Union began to manufacture ironclad warships as well. Once both
sides developed their ironclad warships, they were used significantly and were extremely successful in battle. The first battle that ironclads were
used in was the Battle of Hampton Roads, which lasted for two days. Mark Weaver writes that after Virginia ceded from the Union in 1861, the
Union navy placed a blockade on Hampton Roads. In response, the Confederate Navy sent the CSS Virginia, an ironclad warship, to destroy the
blockade. When the Union Navy heard this, they sent out their ironclad warship, the USS Monitor. However, the CSS Virginia arrived before the USS
Monitor and therefore, many Union wooden battleships defending the blockade were obliterated. When the USS Monitor arrived the next day, the
battle of two ironclads occurred for the first time in history. Both ironclads fought and battled for hours, but in the end, the CSS Virginia retreated and
the USS Monitor was successful in defending the

The War Of 1812 And The Chesapeake Bay
The War of 1812 and the Chesapeake Bay On March 3rd, 1813, the first British ships of war appeared on the Chesapeake Bay. For two years the
Chesapeake would be the scene of numerous amounts of battles. Some would be lost in anonymity, but others would make history. But first, why did
the British come? We were at war almost thirty years before, so how did it come upon these two superpower nations to collide once again? A few
answers to these questions will put the war of 1812 and the Battle of the Chesapeake Bay in its proper context. Shortly following the Revolutionary
War, America built one of the strongest merchant fleets the world had ever seen. Overseas trade flourished America's economy, with its peak
specifically in 1807 with exports ranging around $100 million (Hickey). Throughout this period of growth for America, Great Britain's Royal Navy was
without a doubt the master of the high seas. Not helping the future war, Thomas Jefferson was elected into office in 1801 and one of his most
notable actions was to shrink the Navy and Military significantly. The homelands defense now laid in the hands of a small fleet of mainly gunboats.
They did have a few capital ships, however their primary tasks were to remain as the "floating fortress" of vital eastern seaboard ports. Only quite
rarely did they ever see open water conflict. British and French ships, however, took advantage of the weaker merchant ships of the US navy and began
to prey on them. The British continuously

This location was not the place to make a stand for the British. In the abandoned town, there was nothing to build a solid fortification. Lord Cornwallis
had to use earth and wood to build protection for his troops. The French Navy surrounded the British and the Virginia Militia along with a squadron of

James Glasgow Farragut
James Glasgow Farragut started life on July 5, 1801. He was born near Campbell's Station, Tennessee. His parents were George Farragut, who was
a native to spain, and his mother was Elizabeth Farragut. In his early childhood years, he was adopted by Captain David Porter to learn trade, after
his mother died of yellow fever. Also, he was adopted, because his biological father wanted to put his young children, into the care of family, and
friends. This was so that the children would be better cared for. During the war of 1812, Farragut served under Captain David Porter, who was in
charge of the Frigate Essex. During the War of 1812, James Farragut changed his first name to David, to honor David Porter, who adopted him. When

This area was defended by a couple of forts, and the largest of them was fort Morgan. Fort Morgan had a long line of torpedos, or landmines, on
one side of the fort. Farragut approached the fort, in two columns. Each column had armored ships in the front, followed by a fleet of of wooden
ships. Once the lead ship, Tecumseh was destroyed by a landmine, another leading ship stopped in alarm, and the whole fleet went into confusion
under firing range, from Fort Morgan. Once the disaster, seemed like it could get no worse, Farragut yelled," Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead.
Surprisingly, all of the mines failed to explode, so this meant that all of his fleet was able to reach the enemy Fort shore. Now that the Forts were
completely isolated, they each surrendered one by one. Vicksburg was the first to surrender, on July 4th, 1863. Then, on July 9th, General Banks
accepted that the Confederate Garrison would be surrendered. The battle of Mobile Bay was the Climax of David Farragut's career. Since Farragut was
a rear admiral in 1862, and a vice admiral in 1864, he was appointed full admiral in 1866. Farragut's last in command service was from 1867, to
1868. Although that was his last service in command, David Farragut remained on active duty, until he died. The award of being active duty until
death, has only been awarded to him and six other people. At the age of 69, while Farragut was on vacation in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Farragut

The Battle Of The Civil War
When the Civil War started both sides thought the war would be over by Christmas. But little did they know this small war would turn into the
deadliest war in American history. The Civil War was fought between the Confederacy and the Union. The Confederacy was consisted of Southern
states that did not agree with the views of the Union states. After years of sectional differences in the United States between the north and south,
tension between the states grew and a war between the north and south began. One of the causes of the civil war was the inability of the free and
slaves states to compromise over which new states would allow or prohibit slavery. As the Whig party started dying out, many of its followers joined

One of the disputes that led to the imaginary line was the compromise of 1850. The compromise of 1850 prevented the expansion of slavery into
the newly admitted states, but it also forced northerners return escaped slaves back to their owners in the south. Located in Charleston Harbor,
South Carolina, Fort Sumter was the place the first shots of the civil war were fired. When President Lincoln announced that he was going to
resupply the fort with supplies, the Confederacy were not going to let that happen and decided to stop the Union navy from delivering the
supplies. It can be said that President Lincoln provoked the start of the civil war. If the confederate army did not stop the union navy from
delivering the supplies, then it could be viewed as the confederate states never left the union, but if the confederate army stopped the Union navy
from delivering the supplies it would be viewed as the Confederacy started the war. This is important because if the Confederacy was viewed as the
aggressors, then the border states would not secede from the Union and European countries would not fight on the side of the Confederacy. On April
12, 1861, the Confederate navy fired on Fort Sumter. The battle lasted for 34 hours and the Union army was forced to surrender because of the lack of
supplies. There were no casualties on either side at the end of the battle. Although most people thought the civil war wasn 't gonna

Mental Disorders In Veterans
When a soldier comes home from their deployment, whether it be their first or fourth, they go through an extreme amount of pressure and stress as
they go through a transition back into being a civilian. Many soldiers experience some sort of mental or physical injury while they were deployed,
and many last forever if they are not treated properly. According to Issues and Controversies (Facts on File), in 2011, roughly 320,000 veterans
returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars had experienced a traumatic brain injury while they were deployed. In addition, 300,000 veterans from
the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have suffered from PTSD and/or depression. To add to the mental ailments veterans suffer from, many also live with
physical injuries that impair their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the events they have experienced, veterans are constantly reminded of what happened during their deployment. Simple things like a car tailing a
veteran too close can trigger flashbacks to their tour which can cause harm to both the veteran and the public. In a 2010 survey conducted by the
Naval Health Research Center (San Diego) funded by the Marine Corps, "1,543 Marines with at least one combat tour [finds] that Marines who
had reported PTSD symptoms [are] more than six times as likely to engage in antisocial and aggressive behaviors than those who did not report
PTSD symptoms" (Morris 2). This shows that after deployment the men who have PTSD or an illness like it can be easily triggered by the slightest
factor, which could cause the veteran to harm himself or other people. Without proper treatment of these illnesses, the behaviors that sprout from them
could easily harm others or the veteran himself. The result of not treating these illnesses properly are very common, and many people do not hear
these events because of many news sources choose to never report on events like these. In 2013, PTSD was, "reportedly linked Monday to the man
who allegedly killed 12 people at Washington Navy

no indication of a motive. (Hermann) What he did have, though, was a mental illness. He had showed signs of psychosis, but never received any

This was unlike him. Stone was a very good–natured person who was cursed with his mental illness. He was the father of four young girls who he
would have never decided to leave had he been in his right state of mind. (Agostine) In Indiana, law allows police to seize guns from people who
are threatening to harm themselves or others without a warrant. (26) Regardless of whether or not they've been found to have a mental illness, it is a
very effective method because it allows police to take away a weapon that has the potential to do quite a bit of damage in a very short time. Had Stone's
gun been confiscated, he might not have done what he did. One flaw: Stone acted on an impulse directed by his mental illness. If police were able to
legally take away a person's firearms because he/she was diagnosed with a mental illness, then less damage could have been done in regard to the
firearm's capability of destruction.
Many things can be done differently in order to provide a safer, yet fair way to manage who can and cannot purchase firearms. One change that could
be made is a mental evaluation directly before a person can legally purchase a gun. This would help because people who pose an immediate threat
would not be able to purchase a gun or other firearm during that time, when they might be considered the most dangerous. However, some people
would have no

only look at the battle itself but the events leading up to it.
The union had a plan to block the confederacy by placing union ships around it. This particular battle was a small, taking place in Hampton roads, but
the size of the battle has no effect on its significance. The battle is fought between the CSS (confederate states ship) Virginia, formerly called the

The Confederate Flag of the CSS Virginia: The Stars and Bars were the first official flag of the Confederacy. Although a striking likeness is shared
between this flag and to the Union's "Stars and Stripes," the symbols are representations of two nations at war; two very different places and mindsets.
The Confederate Stars and Bars were flown from March, 1861, to May, 1863 and throughout that time this flag would gain stars at the same rate that
the confederacy gained states into their union, until a final count of thirteen. The Stars and Bars were flown as the Confederate Nation's battle ensign

The Strength Of The Solid Ball
The solid ball was typically used against forts and other artillery pieces. The grape shot and canister shot were utilized as anti–personnel munitions.
The Garrison Cannon used three different types of shells; hot shot, chain shot and bar shot. Hot shots were cannonballs that were heated until they
were glowing red and then fired at ships to set them ablaze. Chain shot and bar shot consisted of two cannon balls connected by either a chain or bar.
They were designed to destroy ships rigging. The mortar used only one type of shell, the bomb. The bomb was a hollow shell that was filled with
black powder and had a fuse. The howitzer utilized hollow shot and anti–personnel munitions.

The United States ' Navy Essay
The United States of America has not always been the world superpower that it is today. The same goes for its Navy. In the first several years of
existence, the United States Navy was not a formidable fighting force. The young nation was hesitant to invest in a navy for many reasons, one of
them being to prevent provoking the world powers of the time, France and Britain. On top of that, navies were very expensive to build and required a
significant amount of resources to maintain, which the U.S. did not have at the time. To say that the United States Navy was ill prepared for war would
be a dramatic understatement. The U.S. had a total of fifteen ships in its entire naval fleet compared to the might of the Royal Navy which possessed
over six hundred warships. Even with the odds stacked against the U.S., President Madison declared war on 18 JUN 1812. The lack of size and
power of the navy at the time would make it extremely difficult to satisfy the needs of the newly founded nation.
The U.S. had enough of the British Navy impressing American sailors and seizing American merchant ships. Even though the U.S. Navy lacked the
size that British had, the Royal Navy was stretched to its limits. Many of the British efforts were focused on the Napoleonic wars taking place in
Europe, leaving just two dozen British ships between Halifax and Bermuda. The U.S. frigates were larger and had much more armament than those of
the British giving the U.S. one more key advantage over their

The Issue Of Gun Control
Gun control is a topic that has gained a lot of momentum lately. There have been several horrific tragedies that have occurred over the last few years.
The debate continues whether access to guns is directly linked to crime and violence and identifying the steps needed to prevent such tragedies in the
future. The public and those in public office have been reviewing whether more stringent controls on gun purchases and on gun owners with a mental
illness should be implemented and what these controls might look like. A person's mental health should be considered when purchasing a firearm

Do People Have A Senseless Tragedy?
For many year the media, politicians, and society have been pointing the finger at music, television, and video games as a reason people have
committed tragic acts of violence against others. Society has always needed to know why someone would commit such a horrible crime. It is human
nature to try to determine why something has happened, and even more so when people's lives have been lost because of it. Unfortunately, it is
extremely difficult to make sense of a senseless tragedy when there is no way to pinpoint exactly what has caused the person to do it. Rather than the
person's metal health being the cause for the crime politicians, media, and society turn to entertainment as the reason behind the persons actions. At
the beginning of most tragedies movies, music, or video games are the factor that pushed the person to commit the crimes, however the persons

more could of died. The crash made a gash that is 30 yards wide and 10 yards deep, puncturing the three outer rings of the building. It was in fire
for 36 hours, and by the time they put it out 189 people were dead. In early October, 2001 they started rebuilding the Pentagon, It was officially

America's Foreign Policy In The Late 19th Century
The foreign policy of the U.S. continued to let Great Britain police the world since, "They who controlled the seas, controlled the world," and England's
great navy dominated the individual sea power of Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and the United States. While Germany swept through Poland and
ignored the western front with France and England, it generated a wishful conclusion that it was phony war.
The U.S. had no effective war machine, so it launched a crash program of airfields, staging bases, war planes and ordinance. In 1940, Western
Contracting Corporation entered a joint venture with Lytle, Klinger and Arthur Newman Co. of Des Moines, to build the Fort Leonard Wood
20,000–man army base in the Missouri Ozarks. These "90–day wonders" took some doing, and at the construction peak, we had 31,000 men on the
payroll. The work was finished on time, including a 16–mile access railroad across some sizeable rivers. Western then bid in a portion of an army
ammunition base in Lexington, Bourbon County, Kentucky, which consisted of concrete "igloos" covered with 20–feet of soil, access roads, railways

The homeowners raised a loud objection to the blasting noise and trucking activity, and were adding pressure on the city to close the operation.
To compound the situation, which was vital to Western, on a Saturday our quarry crew inadvertently ignited the waxed paper which wrapped the
dynamite sticks and hurriedly left. The resulting open air explosion of a box of dynamite rattled the windows and broke a few, which spelled the end
of the quarry. However, the next day, Sunday, Pearl Harbor was bombed, which placed the U.S. in a two

ensuing surge of patriotic activity drowned out the quarry objectors, so Western continued to complete the war base as

Gun Control Under Control Essay
Gun Control Under Control
Whenever a shooting happens, such Columbine, the Aurora Theater Shooting, or the Navy Yard shooting, the question of gun control comes up in
politics again. Then after a month or two, the topic is dropped, until yet another shooting happens. When is this nation going to finally make a change?
America needs to put more emphasis on making certain potential criminals and the clinically insane do not have access to such dangerous weapons.
What about the little boy who found his parent's gun in his parent's bedside drawer and accidentally shot himself? Should there not be laws to protect

The idea of redesigning guns is considered more with public safety due to the larger numbers of gun–related deaths (Now 3). What is so hard about
making guns safer? If people are not willing to make guns safer, which is obviously the case, then there should be gun controls. . Imagine how many
of these accidental deaths could be prevented if guns can be kept out of the hands of children and the careless.
According to the NCIPC "In 1994, there were 38,505 firearm–related deaths. These included: more than 17,800 homicides; more than 18,700 suicides;
more than 1,300 unintentional, firearms–related deaths related to firearms" (Facts 1). Some of the worst crimes are committed with guns. For example,
the shooting at Columbine which Americans heard about on the news in 1999. Two teenagers shot and killed twelve students and one teacher at their
own school (Facts 1). The boys were later thought to be mentally ill, as with many of the people who commit shooting such as this. Could this have
been prevented through gun laws that require stricter background checks and better mental health check ups? In an article by Craig R Whitney, he
quotes LaPierre from NBC, "We have a mental health system in this country that has completely and totally collapsed. We have no national database of
these lunatics" (Whitney 1). So many suicides and homicides could be prevented with government mandated mental

How Gamers Are Solving Science's Biggest Problem
On September 16, 2013, There was a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, by a gamer named Aaron Alexis. Friends of Aaron, said he would spend
hours playing violent "Zombie" video games. Role playing games with simulated violence are perilous for kids.
One of the reasons for this opinion is that they make games addictive. 59% of Americans played video games last year. In the article, "How Gamers

to be so." Another example is that "There is 800,000 playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 right now." That is almost the population of Detroit, Michigan!
Another reason is that it increases violence.

The Dc Metro Area Reduce Violence Regarding Firearms Essay
Guiding Question(s) How can the DC metro area reduce violence regarding firearms? How can gun control laws helps solve this issue?
Introduction/Background
DC metro area is known for having one of the strictest gun control laws in the US, but it highest crime rate regarding firearms in the whole country
(Phillips). In July 2014, the case Palmer v. District of Columbia (2014) said that there is an absolution prohibition on carrying handguns out of your
home, place of business or specific recreational purposes (Alman). There are numerous requirements that need to be met to obtain a concealed carry
permit in the District of Columbia. Cities and Metropolitan areas have firearm homicide rates in line with the nations with one of the highest homicide
rate. Homicide and gun crimes in Washington DC has increased every year despite the overall crime rate being relatively the same. Armed robberies
has went up to 16 percent and assault with a dangerous weapons involving a firearm went up to 19 percent (Alman).
Thesis Statement In the DC Metropolitan Area, violence regarding firearm has been a big issue. It has one of the highest homicide rates involving
firearm in the country even though they are known for having one of the strictest gun control laws in the country. Gun control in the an metropolitan
area is impossible, but little changes can be made in order to reduce the amount of damage that firearms have brought to the city. Creating a system to

Yorktown Battle Analysis
General Washington now had a combined force of over 16,000 American and French Soldiers ready to begin a siege of Cornwallis and his British
force of only 7,500 Soldiers. The French Navy had decisively defeated the British Navy. There was no chance of escape for the British, both land and
sea routes were blocked. On September 29, 1781, the Battle of Yorktown began. As Washington moved his Army closer to the British, the British would
engage them from their defensive positions. Over the next 6 days, the French and Americans would establish their trenches needed to begin the siege.

British Soldiers held it. The French would attack redoubt 9. One hundred twenty British and German Soldiers held it. At 1830, Washington employed a

Hamilton and his men captured redoubt 10" (Middleton, 2012, pg.385). The French simultaneously assaulted redoubt number 9, and successfully

Specializations of The U.S. Special Operations Teams
The U.S. Special Operations Teams are some of the toughest men in the entire world and are trained to endure the most extreme conditions in
order to be properly prepared to serve and defend our country, The United States of America. There are three different branches of protection in The
United States: the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force. Accordingly, each of these has its own tribute to the Special Operations Forces. The Navy
contributes the Navy SEALs, the Air Force provides Air Force SOCOM, and the Army provides the Green Berets, Delta Force, and the Rangers.
Each of these sectors is very selective and secretive. The SEALs are likely the most highly trained forces out of all of the Special Operations Units.
SEAL stands for Sea, Air, and Land team. The SEALs must know how to do many different things. The SEALs are commandos, which is a soldier
who is in the United States Special Operations who specializes in water landings, parachuting, and repelling down mountains. These commandos must
also know how to take down enemies while in various places including underwater, in speedboats, helicopters, while parachuting, or by land espionage
(Stanley). Their job is complicated because they must know how to do what the Air Force Units do such as parachuting, how to deal with explosives
and hands on combat similar to that of the Army Units, along with the "Navy" part of the job which encompasses underwater missions and training.

Many people play videogames just for fun, and to help make time go by. They don't take what they do in a video game, and always think it'd be okay to
do it in real life. Study co–author, Allison Fine Mishkin, who's been studying effects of video games said, "Individuals who regularly played less than
an hour a day of any type of game were actually less likely than their non–playing peers to fight with or bully peers and were rated as better behaved by
their teachers" (Violent Video Games). One probable reason kids who play video games are less likely to fight or bully, is they're able to get out any
type of aggression they have whilst playing a video game. Many video games, such as, Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Fallout, and GTA are open world,
and there's more to do than just violence. Almost any open world game, there is things to do that isn't violent. In games like Skyrim, the developers

Modern Day Mass Shooter
Seeing stories about mass shootings on the news is an everyday occurrence. Mass shootings occur when people intentionally and indiscriminately shoot
multiple people at one venue or at one time. In the United States, there have been 62 mass shootings in the last thirty years. There have been 24 in the
last seven years, alone. If he lived in the twenty first century the monster in Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly and the movie by the same title, directed by
James Whale, would be a modern day mass shooter. The monster and serial shooters share some comparably important traits, such as being bullied by
humans, wanting revenge, and having psychological problems.
To some, being bullied is not a big deal; but to others (such as the monster and many mass shooters) being bullied affects their outlook on the world.
To bully, according to Miriam Webster Dictionary, is "to frighten, hurt, or threaten (a smaller or weaker person): to act like a bully toward (someone):
to cause (someone) to do something by making threats or insults or by using force" both the monster and many mass shooters have experienced high
levels of bullying, which possibly led to the massacres. In particular, a well–known duo of boys became mass shooters after being continuously bullied
by their classmates. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed twelve people and injured 24 at Columbine High School. According to the New York Times,
in an article comparing the different factors in mass suicidal shooters to terrorist "The

Effects Of Isolation In Bartleby
Effects of Isolation on an Individual In Melville's Bartleby Many of traumatizing and devastating events that have taken place this year is extremely
alarming. The events that were taken place in the recent school shootings in Florida and Maryland has sharpened awareness for many people. In
Herman Melville's Bartleby, readers can easily draw similarities between Bartleby and the Gunman in these devastating recent events. Bartleby is an
alienated and homeless individual whom is secluded similar to the gunman in these recent school shootings. The psychological and socio political
ramifications of isolation on an individual affects one's mind, alters his or her ability to exercise cognitive control, and sometimes even lead to
violence. Prolonged isolation is physically bad on individuals, particularly mentally. Isolation interferes with everyday functioning, such as sleep
patterns, attention and logical and verbal reasoning (Bond). In this novella, Bartleby seems to experience an interference with logical reasoning
because he never seems to understand that he needs to leave the office. The most profound effects of isolation are on the mind. One of the strangest
effects is the 'time–shifting' which is spending long periods doing something in a closed environment. Bond reported... Show more content on

As mentioned earlier, it was designated as a "warship" although it was not outfitted with guns. In fact, not only did it carry passengers, ammunition and
supplies from the United States were in route to Great Britain. It's very difficult to compare the sinking of the Lusitania and the shooting on the navy

Many historians do not believe the full story about what exactly happened to the Lusitania except it was hit by a torpedo. The problem could be due
to the second explosion that occurred after the first hit and many think it could have been due to the ammunition which was being transported from the
United States to Great Britain to help British continue their war campaign. One would ask what does this have to do with the similarities or
dissimilarity is because the RMS Lusitania was no ordinary ship. Many people don't know the history of this great cruise liner because of the historic

"To support and defend the constitution of the United States," these words are part of the oath of office every officer swears to when they accept their

A Career In The Deaf Community

  • 1. A Career In The Deaf Community My career goal is to become an interpreter for the deaf and HOH particularity in the performing arts districts in the Metropolitan Area of Washington, DC. In 10 years, I imagine myself interpreting for aspiring deaf performers and encouraging my community to become deaf friendly by providing great service and establishing educational Workshops. Currently, I work as an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Specialist for Naval Sea Systems Command, at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC. Part of my duties is interpreter coordinating for contractors to provide my customers with support on specific subject matters. Like most cultures, it is evolving so I must be willing to stay present by learning new terminology, national news, and slang in both hearing and deaf worlds. • 3. Civil War Weapons Technology Research Paper on Civil War Weapons and Technology The American Civil War, lasting from 1861 to 1865, was one of the bloodiest wars that the world has ever seen. The number of casualties resulting from the Civil War was a staggering six–hundred and twenty–thousand American soldiers. Although there are many explanations as to why the Civil War was so murderous, such as disease or lack of medical advancements, the main reason why it was so deadly was because of the newly introduced technology and weaponry. Some of the new technologies that came about during the Civil War were rifles, railroads, ironclad ships, and submarines. Each of the four devices had a unique history and were used significantly in specific battles, which in turn, affected... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Civil War broke out in 1861, the majority of the U.S. Navy supported the Union. This left the Confederates with little naval strength. At this time, all naval ships were made out of wood, so in order to give themselves more of an advantage over the Union, the Confederates began to assemble ironclads or purchase ironclads from other countries. In response, the Union began to manufacture ironclad warships as well. Once both sides developed their ironclad warships, they were used significantly and were extremely successful in battle. The first battle that ironclads were used in was the Battle of Hampton Roads, which lasted for two days. Mark Weaver writes that after Virginia ceded from the Union in 1861, the Union navy placed a blockade on Hampton Roads. In response, the Confederate Navy sent the CSS Virginia, an ironclad warship, to destroy the blockade. When the Union Navy heard this, they sent out their ironclad warship, the USS Monitor. However, the CSS Virginia arrived before the USS Monitor and therefore, many Union wooden battleships defending the blockade were obliterated. When the USS Monitor arrived the next day, the battle of two ironclads occurred for the first time in history. Both ironclads fought and battled for hours, but in the end, the CSS Virginia retreated and the USS Monitor was successful in defending the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The War Of 1812 And The Chesapeake Bay The War of 1812 and the Chesapeake Bay On March 3rd, 1813, the first British ships of war appeared on the Chesapeake Bay. For two years the Chesapeake would be the scene of numerous amounts of battles. Some would be lost in anonymity, but others would make history. But first, why did the British come? We were at war almost thirty years before, so how did it come upon these two superpower nations to collide once again? A few answers to these questions will put the war of 1812 and the Battle of the Chesapeake Bay in its proper context. Shortly following the Revolutionary War, America built one of the strongest merchant fleets the world had ever seen. Overseas trade flourished America's economy, with its peak specifically in 1807 with exports ranging around $100 million (Hickey). Throughout this period of growth for America, Great Britain's Royal Navy was without a doubt the master of the high seas. Not helping the future war, Thomas Jefferson was elected into office in 1801 and one of his most notable actions was to shrink the Navy and Military significantly. The homelands defense now laid in the hands of a small fleet of mainly gunboats. They did have a few capital ships, however their primary tasks were to remain as the "floating fortress" of vital eastern seaboard ports. Only quite rarely did they ever see open water conflict. British and French ships, however, took advantage of the weaker merchant ships of the US navy and began to prey on them. The British continuously ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Battle Of Yorktown Research Paper The battle that won American Independence While researching skirmishes and major battles throughout the Revolutionary War to find an artillery battle that exemplifies what we do as Field Artillery there was one battle that stuck out. There was no battle more glorious or more significant in shaping our great nation than the battle of Yorktown. Think of the Revolutionary War, visions of guerrilla –like hit–and–run tactics of the minute men causing confusion and exhaustion to the neat marching formations of Great Britain come to mind. Now consider the final battle of Yorktown; a small town on the Virginia peninsula flanked by the York and James River on either side. It seemed impossible that a small loosely organized and virtually un–armed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This location was not the place to make a stand for the British. In the abandoned town, there was nothing to build a solid fortification. Lord Cornwallis had to use earth and wood to build protection for his troops. The French Navy surrounded the British and the Virginia Militia along with a squadron of the French Cavalry held the north side of the bay. General Washington and the French nobleman General Lafayette surrounded Lord Cornwallis on the south side of the bay with General Washington taking the place of honor on the right side. The British built redoubts, which is a stronghold to help with the main fortification "The combined French and American plans called for multiple forces to arrive at the same location, at about the same time" (http://www.visitingyorktown.com/siege.html) while giving the impression to General Clinton as if they were setting up a permanent camp as they really marched down South to corner General Cornwallis. In his early childhood years, he was adopted by Captain David Porter to learn trade, after his mother died of yellow fever. Also, he was adopted, because his biological father wanted to put his young children, into the care of family, and friends. This was so that the children would be better cared for. During the war of 1812, Farragut served under Captain David Porter, who was in charge of the Frigate Essex. This area was defended by a couple of forts, and the largest of them was fort Morgan. Fort Morgan had a long line of torpedos, or landmines, on one side of the fort. Farragut approached the fort, in two columns. Each column had armored ships in the front, followed by a fleet of of wooden ships. Once the lead ship, Tecumseh was destroyed by a landmine, another leading ship stopped in alarm, and the whole fleet went into confusion under firing range, from Fort Morgan. Once the disaster, seemed like it could get no worse, Farragut yelled," Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead. Surprisingly, all of the mines failed to explode, so this meant that all of his fleet was able to reach the enemy Fort shore. Now that the Forts were completely isolated, they each surrendered one by one. Vicksburg was the first to surrender, on July 4th, 1863. Then, on July 9th, General Banks accepted that the Confederate Garrison would be surrendered. The battle of Mobile Bay was the Climax of David Farragut's career. Since Farragut was a rear admiral in 1862, and a vice admiral in 1864, he was appointed full admiral in 1866. Farragut's last in command service was from 1867, to 1868. But little did they know this small war would turn into the deadliest war in American history. The Civil War was fought between the Confederacy and the Union. The Confederacy was consisted of Southern states that did not agree with the views of the Union states. After years of sectional differences in the United States between the north and south, tension between the states grew and a war between the north and south began. One of the causes of the civil war was the inability of the free and slaves states to compromise over which new states would allow or prohibit slavery. As the Whig party started dying out, many of its followers joined the Know–Nothing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the disputes that led to the imaginary line was the compromise of 1850. The compromise of 1850 prevented the expansion of slavery into the newly admitted states, but it also forced northerners return escaped slaves back to their owners in the south. Located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, Fort Sumter was the place the first shots of the civil war were fired. When President Lincoln announced that he was going to resupply the fort with supplies, the Confederacy were not going to let that happen and decided to stop the Union navy from delivering the supplies. It can be said that President Lincoln provoked the start of the civil war. If the confederate army did not stop the union navy from delivering the supplies, then it could be viewed as the confederate states never left the union, but if the confederate army stopped the Union navy from delivering the supplies it would be viewed as the Confederacy started the war. This is important because if the Confederacy was viewed as the aggressors, then the border states would not secede from the Union and European countries would not fight on the side of the Confederacy. On April 12, 1861, the Confederate navy fired on Fort Sumter. The battle lasted for 34 hours and the Union army was forced to surrender because of the lack of supplies. Mental Disorders In Veterans When a soldier comes home from their deployment, whether it be their first or fourth, they go through an extreme amount of pressure and stress as they go through a transition back into being a civilian. Due to the events they have experienced, veterans are constantly reminded of what happened during their deployment. Simple things like a car tailing a veteran too close can trigger flashbacks to their tour which can cause harm to both the veteran and the public. In a 2010 survey conducted by the Naval Health Research Center (San Diego) funded by the Marine Corps, "1,543 Marines with at least one combat tour [finds] that Marines who had reported PTSD symptoms [are] more than six times as likely to engage in antisocial and aggressive behaviors than those who did not report PTSD symptoms" (Morris 2). This shows that after deployment the men who have PTSD or an illness like it can be easily triggered by the slightest factor, which could cause the veteran to harm himself or other people. Without proper treatment of these illnesses, the behaviors that sprout from them could easily harm others or the veteran himself. The result of not treating these illnesses properly are very common, and many people do not hear these events because of many news sources choose to never report on events like these. In the first several years of existence, the United States Navy was not a formidable fighting force. The young nation was hesitant to invest in a navy for many reasons, one of them being to prevent provoking the world powers of the time, France and Britain. On top of that, navies were very expensive to build and required a significant amount of resources to maintain, which the U.S. did not have at the time. To say that the United States Navy was ill prepared for war would be a dramatic understatement. The U.S. had a total of fifteen ships in its entire naval fleet compared to the might of the Royal Navy which possessed over six hundred warships. Even with the odds stacked against the U.S., President Madison declared war on 18 JUN 1812. The lack of size and power of the navy at the time would make it extremely difficult to satisfy the needs of the newly founded nation. The U.S. had enough of the British Navy impressing American sailors and seizing American merchant ships. Even though the U.S. Navy lacked the size that British had, the Royal Navy was stretched to its limits. For many year the media, politicians, and society have been pointing the finger at music, television, and video games as a reason people have committed tragic acts of violence against others. Society has always needed to know why someone would commit such a horrible crime. It is human nature to try to determine why something has happened, and even more so when people's lives have been lost because of it. These commandos must also know how to take down enemies while in various places including underwater, in speedboats, helicopters, while parachuting, or by land espionage (Stanley). Their job is complicated because they must know how to do what the Air Force Units do such as parachuting, how to deal with explosives and hands on combat similar to that of the Army Units, along with the "Navy" part of the job which encompasses underwater missions and training. • 28. Mainstream Media Violence Source of Violence or false Accusation "Mainstream media have never liked video games, but it's just getting silly lately," said Dr Vance. A lot of people like using the Aaron Alexis story as "proof" that videogames cause violence. Aaron Alexis was a sailor in the navy, and had great enthusiasm for thevideo game "Call Of Duty". On September 16th, 2013, he started to shoot at innocent people inside the Washington Navy Yard, killing 12 people. The media likes to try and blame his liking of "Call Of Duty" for his actions, but Aaron had actually been suffering from a mental illness which is more likely the actual reasoning for his actions (Claims that 'video). Before his actions at the navy yard, he had reported hearing voices in his head telling him ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people play videogames just for fun, and to help make time go by. They don't take what they do in a video game, and always think it'd be okay to do it in real life. Study co–author, Allison Fine Mishkin, who's been studying effects of video games said, "Individuals who regularly played less than an hour a day of any type of game were actually less likely than their non–playing peers to fight with or bully peers and were rated as better behaved by their teachers" (Violent Video Games). One probable reason kids who play video games are less likely to fight or bully, is they're able to get out any type of aggression they have whilst playing a video game. Many video games, such as, Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Fallout, and GTA are open world, and there's more to do than just violence. Almost any open world game, there is things to do that isn't violent. • 29. Modern Day Mass Shooter Seeing stories about mass shootings on the news is an everyday occurrence. Mass shootings occur when people intentionally and indiscriminately shoot multiple people at one venue or at one time. In the United States, there have been 62 mass shootings in the last thirty years. There have been 24 in the last seven years, alone. If he lived in the twenty first century the monster in Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly and the movie by the same title, directed by James Whale, would be a modern day mass shooter. The monster and serial shooters share some comparably important traits, such as being bullied by humans, wanting revenge, and having psychological problems. To some, being bullied is not a big deal; but to others (such as the monster and many mass shooters) being bullied affects their outlook on the world. To bully, according to Miriam Webster Dictionary, is "to frighten, hurt, or threaten (a smaller or weaker person): to act like a bully toward (someone): to cause (someone) to do something by making threats or insults or by using force" both the monster and many mass shooters have experienced high levels of bullying, which possibly led to the massacres. In particular, a well–known duo of boys became mass shooters after being continuously bullied by their classmates. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed twelve people and injured 24 at Columbine High School. Senior enlisted leaders are the keepers of naval tradition, heritage and the values as well as the mentors and teachers of our history. This paper will cover the history of the USS ENTERPRISE and the importance of its history to us as senior enlisted leaders. History The first ENTERPRISE was a sloop supply ship by the British. Col B. Arnold seized the ship on 18 May 1775 at Saint John's Quebec Canada and provided it for the use on Lake Champlain. On August 28, 1775, ENTERPRISE and other ships begin more than one thousand troops as part of an expedition against Saint Johns, Montreal, and Quebec. On 11 October 1776 at Valcour Island Col B. Arnold chose this site to wait for the British. After two days of a running battle, it occur in the loss of all but five American ships. ENTERPRISE and four other ships escaped to Crown Point, and sailed to Ticonderoga. On 17 October 1777, under the lead of General Horatio Gates the British was overpowered at Saratoga, New York. This victory brought about the alliance with the French. Sadly, ENTERPRISE and two other ships ran aground on July 7, 1777 and burned themselves to prevent capture. • 31.

Effects Of Isolation In Bartleby Effects of Isolation on an Individual In Melville's Bartleby Many of traumatizing and devastating events that have taken place this year is extremely alarming. The events that were taken place in the recent school shootings in Florida and Maryland has sharpened awareness for many people. In Herman Melville's Bartleby, readers can easily draw similarities between Bartleby and the Gunman in these devastating recent events. Bartleby is an alienated and homeless individual whom is secluded similar to the gunman in these recent school shootings. The psychological and socio political ramifications of isolation on an individual affects one's mind, alters his or her ability to exercise cognitive control, and sometimes even lead to violence. Prolonged isolation is physically bad on individuals, particularly mentally. Isolation interferes with everyday functioning, such as sleep patterns, attention and logical and verbal reasoning (Bond). In this novella, Bartleby seems to experience an interference with logical reasoning because he never seems to understand that he needs to leave the office. The most profound effects of isolation are on the mind. One of the strangest effects is the 'time–shifting' which is spending long periods doing something in a closed environment. Bond reported... The Navy Yard was used to build ordnance for the warships and also used as a repair facility should a warship is damaged during war. The Navy Yard was damaged during a fire in the 1800's and looting occurred by the local people around the area which enforced the walls around the Yard to be rebuilt to 10 feet. Many historians do not believe the full story about what exactly happened to the Lusitania except it was hit by a torpedo. The problem could be due to the second explosion that occurred after the first hit and many think it could have been due to the ammunition which was being transported from the United States to Great Britain to help British continue their war campaign. Immediately after recognizing she was surrounded by the enemy, the wind died. Her escape is now legendary. With both sides becalmed and just out of gunnery range, there ensued what amounted to a 36 hour, slow–speed chase. CONSTITUTION's crew kept her ahead of the English by rowing (known to Sailors as the "white ash breeze"), by attempting to tow her with the ship's boats. Then her First Lieutenant (XO), Lt. Charles Morris, suggested a procedure known as "kedging," in which an anchor is carried out ahead of the ship, dropped, and the ship drawn up to it.
