Some Issues Affecting the Sustainability of Open Learning Courses

  1. Sc: Can allude to the fact that group work was required in several modules. One perspective on this experience is data gathered by Reflection Forms proved insight during course. Participant comments were grouped in to five themes: one of these was online interaction Suggest this is interesting because of the stark contrast between benefits and barriers
  2. SC Revealing data that shows the difficulty in sustaining study and transforming participation in to completion; low withdrawal threshold This is further accentuated if we were to add an additional column to the table for number doing peer assessment: out of 66 assignment activities uploaded there were only 2 comments – both of which were one short sentence.
  3. Issue of how and if one decouples relationship between tutor and participant, or reframes this somehow
  4. 1. End up arriving at a negotiated course – standardisation across modules could limit innovation: 2. Still seems that each person concentrates on our module and discussion only takes place at things that need agreeing centrally: in some cases more co-operation than collaboration across entire team. This was shown by fact few authors looked at many other modules apart from their own before the course first started 3. No author provided context specific notes for tutors, additional IRC chat ideas or topics or resources or prepared a brief outlining their full learning design or pedagogic intentions etc for module 4. Authors appeared to have often been only somewhat confident (or occasionally not very confident) that the module would work well as an OPEN LEARNING module – illustrates this remains a new field and one unfamiliar to academics
