1. On this channel four
banner’9/11: The Falling man’
the channel four logo is
strikingly chilling the colour red
represents blood as the man in
plummeting to his death from
the twin towers. The man’s face
has been shadowed by the title
protecting his identity. The
caption on the banner; ‘The
picture nobody wanted you to
see’ is terrifyingly horrific, an
image such as this is normally
dramatised by the media
however the fact that the image
is based on real events and is
from the time is horrifying and
hard to comprehend.
The caption is very sticking and
engages the audience
specifically by using the
personal pronoun you and
furthermore the word see
indicates the footage of the
documentary/ programme is
shocking and enlightening in
the way that it signifies the
actual truth and puts yourself in
the falling mans shoes.
The use of a caption is very though provoking therefore I will consider whether I believe using a caption would encourage my audience to watch
the documentary. Or whether the title of the documentary would appeal to my target market already. I must also consider the placement of text on
the banner and whether the image and shape of the banner I chose to use will have enough space for a title and caption, I do not want to
overpowering the image with text and a caption works on this image as the banner is portrait and the focus of the banner is quite small.
2. The green grungy style of the bathroom signifies the show is an in-depth
programme. The crumpled title and subtitle links to stress which
can be linked to the actor being submerged and estranged from the
world in the green bath tub. The title and subtitle have been written in
white and purple the crumpled style which has presumably added on-top
of the image can represent the character not feeling comfortable
with who he is therefore he is hiding underneath the water. The vague
look and expression of the man in the bath tub represents he is in
deep though and thinking about something else.
The colour purple is a conventional representation of E4’s unique
identity the channel uses the colour purple to advertise all their shows
targeting a young demographic audience. The positioning of the title,
subtitle and logo is unconventional the logo is normally positioned in
the centre right of the page with the title and subtitle on the left hand
side predominantly at the bottom of the image, I believe E4 have
chosen to position the title, subtitle and logo above the man in the bath
tub so that as an audience we feel as if we are delving into his life, the
image has been taken from a high POV slanted angle and positions
the audience as omniscient figures looking down at the character. This
suggests that the audiences purpose for watching the programme is to
feel superior or of a higher status another use the programme offers is
identification in the way that an audience member is able to relate to
the characters situation and life.
The intricate placements of normal objects which are used in a
bathroom have been shown in the image, the bar of soap and razor
next to the top end of the bath and the tooth brush in the top left corner
on the window ledge as well as the broken tiles gives you the
impression it is a real environment and based on someone’s life
therefore the creators allow the audience to identify with the
characters mood, the subdued thoughts about his life can be identified
by individuals who are not happy.
3. The use of posters is striking and horrifying how many children are missing the use of the wall of china to represent the masses of children
missing links to china’s culture and heritage. It is a well-known fact that in China the government only wants people to have one child as they
are becoming overpopulated. The use of a red banner surrounding the text implies the children could have been killed, the colour red can be
linked to blood surrounding the connotations of death and fear. The overcast sky being dark and stormy connotes the unhappiness the
parents of all the children must feel the fear that they will never see their children again. The array of images floating in the wind and
surrounding the wall represents a lifeless grave yard, the forgotten children and the image has connotations of deep sadness and an
unspoken message. The title also makes you beg the question, who stole the children? Was it the government? were they taken to become
part of an army were they killed were they put into child labour?
I think that the use of a wall is very affective and through the development of my own advertisement banners I may test out different
backgrounds to see the type of affect different textures or colours connote to an audience.
4. This cinematography editing style of merging photos together gives the audience the impression that the programme is about people who
have conflicting lives maybe have issues with identifying their identity. Another interpretation of this image is that the two people are the
main protagonists in the programme. The caption ‘A new reality’ signifies the programme has been filmed in a documentary style and that
the individuals lives are scrutinized. The use of a woman and a man also signifies that the programme could be about the way in which we
see ourselves through materialistic values and the way in which people interpret the type of person we are online. The use of a man and a
woman could also indicate the programme is about sexual equality in society or the predominant ethnicity and how individuals are judged.
The most affective part of the banner is the fact that you are not sure what the programme is about therefore you want to watch the
programme.
When I am designing my advertisement banner I need to consider the type of message I am putting across to my audience and how
someone could interpret the banner, it is important that I reflect what the documentary is about and that my banner doesn’t offend anyone
in any way.
5. I like the edited blur effect used
on the image which represents
society moving busily around
the child falling between the
pavement. The image of the
boy falling through the cracks
in the pavement represents the
cracks of society none is
looking out for him aware that
he is not ok and that someone
need stop and help him
therefore as the title implies he
is forgotten. The banner gives
the audience the impression
that the programme has been
filmed in a documentary style
or is in fact a documentary. The
use of a white boarder
surrounding the channel four
text makes the text stand out
as the overall colour scheme
has been influenced by hues
and shades of greys and blues.
The fact that the boy is wearing
a red shirt again represents he
is in danger like a red traffic
light he is asking for everyone
to shop around him however
none sees him.
The caption; ‘A season on the care system’ signifies that the documentary or programme will be filmed
in an interrogational way, hammering people in the care system and trying to find out why the care
system. The word ‘on’ signifies that the care system is not regarded as a reliable organisation by
channel four and that the programme will reveal issues in the care system that are shocking.
6. I like the way in which this programme’s banner represents the programme is from action genre by the use of a military black and white
colour scheme moreover the style of the poster has been shredded and part of the title has been blocked out therefore representing the
secret service. The word ‘National security’ is used in the subtitle to signify the programs protagonist may be from the military. The colouring
of black and white is very neutral and harsh, there is no hiding the truth the colouring gives the audience the impression that by seeing this
poster you are putting the man’s identity in danger. I also feel like finger print marks are missing in the background, there is an element of
surveillance in this image. Furthermore the man is staring right at you and implies he is fearless and dominates in whatever he does.
I like the shredded paper style the poster has used and I may experiment in the same style when developing the style of my own
advertisement banner for my documentary. By shredding the paper it represent your identity is being destroyed this can be linked to the
contents of my documentary
