The document describes the development and evaluation of an advertisement for an energy drink. The student created several draft advertisements and evaluated the technical, aesthetic, and persuasive qualities of each. For the final advertisement, the student used graphics and colors that matched the drink can to create consistency. While the advertisement had successful elements like a simple design and representation of the drink's power, the student notes opportunities for further improvement. These include testing a white background, adjusting graphic proportions, and adding more persuasive text. In evaluating their work, the student conducted an in-depth analysis of the advertisement's visual impact and ability to promote sales.
2. Task 6: Advert Development
For my first draft of my poster advert, I was looking to keep a very simple and clean look for my
advert and not to make it too busy. I first decided to use a gradient effect for my background so
it wasn’t just white and had a pale tone to the background and I decided that the colour of the
background would match the flavour and colour scheme of the drink. I used the same font for
the text of the advert to the writing that was on the can and I also used the same colour orange
as the colours on the can to make them link together. I decided to use an insect to hold the can
and this was because it showed the power of the drink by showing that an insect can hold the
drink when realistically it can’t, so it gives the drink a hidden message in the poster and I feel
this was an appropriate way to show the power and energy you can gain from this drink and I
feel this can become really persuasive. I felt that there needed to be more added to the advert
to make it more aesthetically pleasing so using the oranges in the background which fades out
with the gradient effect was subtle in the background but it helped the image of the insect stand
out and just made it a lot more pleasant for the viewer to see. Enlarging the insect makes it a lot
easier for the viewer to see and helps it stand out on the page as you can still get the
comparison of the drink and the insect and the power it resembles. I added a Twitter and
Facebook logo onto the advert so that people can use social media to get involved with the
drink and find out more information about it and I also added a web link in the bottom right
corner so that people can visit the page on the drink and buy products or gain information about
it. I changed the hue of the logos so that it would blend in with my colour scheme but it still
becomes obvious as to what the logos are and I felt that the colour of the web address could
have been changed to a colour that would stand out against the orange because it’s hard to see
against the colour of the oranges. I then added a boarder along the top of the advert and I used
the same images that was on the can and so this created a link between the can and the advert
and I felt that the images worked really well with the bright colours on the advert because of
them being in monochrome and the strong contrast that it creates. I also changed the hue of the
grasshopper so that it blended in with my colour scheme and this makes it very unusual and
different. To improve this advert I could use more writing to promote the drink (e.g. say how
many calories are in the drink or the different occasions the drink can be used for) as I haven't
used much writing on my advert apart from the name and the slogan of the drink so using more
persuasive writing will make the advert a lot more intriguing for the audience. The can I used for
the advert was only a mock can so when the real can is on the advert it will look more
appealing. Also, I think that the green grasshopper worked a lot better than the orange one
because changing the hue caused a loss of detail on the grasshopper and it looks more
realistic.
3. Task 6: Advert Development
These are the different variations of my advert for my energy drink and the improvement that
could be made to them and the successful elements of the adverts. I think that the top advert
was the most successful out of them all and I really like the simplicity of the design but how it’s
still eye catching and draws the attention of the viewer and on the page now it is the one that
grabs my attention first out of all the adverts. I felt that there was a lot of successful elements to
the advert including the banner across the top and the background image of the orange and
also how power is represented in the advert by using the grasshopper. But I felt that the advert
needed some writing somewhere to help promote the drink a bit more as it would then intrigue
the audience that little bit more as I could be promoting the fact it’s a drink for every style of
occasion. The advert is very feminine and this goes with the style of audience I’m aiming the
drink at and the style of advert matches the style of drink as well very clean and fresh. The
middle advert is quite boring in my eyes as I feel the colour scheme is quite bland and the style
of pink for the name of the drink doesn’t go with the colour of the background. The colour
scheme of the advert would change with the flavour of drink that I am promoting. I think the
successful elements of this advert is the overlapped writing which spells out Organique as it just
fits in with the advert and just gives quite a fancy design to the advert. I also think that using the
multiply blending mode to blend the images onto the background works really well as they
become quite subtle but creates a boarder still for the advert and it also works well with the
colour scheme. I think the extra bit of writing on the advert is something that would work better
with the first advert as it looks slightly out of place on this advert and doesn’t really work and
there is a lot of empty and negative areas on the advert. I feel that the colour of the background
looks quite bland and boring and doesn’t make the style of advert look modern, especially with
the monochrome images and it has more of an old feel to it. The last advert is a completely
different style to the other two as I wanted to try out something more bold and dark which
contrasts well with the style of drink I am going for. The smoke image links well with the sparks
because you can get smoke from sparks and it all links to fire. I also think the idea of the spark
coming from the ‘O’ on the name of the drink looks really effective and represents power in a
subtle way and looks intriguing. I stuck with the banner on this advert but placed it at the bottom
and I think that this works well and I really like the structure of this advert and how the title and
the slogan contrasts with the background and I like the way they have been placed and the way
the can becomes the focus of the advert. I think that the smoke image is a bit tatty around the
edges so if I did use this advert it would be spilt from the smoke image as it’s not the best
image and it doesn't really blend into the background either. But the black background helps
everything stand out on the advert.
5. Task 6: Advert Evaluation
What are the technical qualities of your work?
I feel that the technical aspects to my advertisement went really well and the different skills I used to create the advert all
worked and it has come out to a high standard. I first used a gradient tool to give the background a tint of orange (which
was matching to the colour scheme of my flavour of drink in the advert) and this then made the background not just plain
white but gave it a bit of colour to it while trying to keep it simple. I then used the image of the oranges that are on my can
and placed that in the background as well and then I used the gradient tool to blend the image into the other gradient
effect as well and to blend it into the background. I placed 4 images along the top of the poster so it would create a banner
for my advert and I used the same images that were used on my can so that it creates a link between the can and the advert
as it wouldn't be as effective using different images that didn’t relate to the can itself. The black and white from the images
contrasts with the colour in the advert and it’s very bold on the advert so it stands out to audience and shows the point that
it can be used for anyone in any social class and any occasion. I used the same font for the name of my drink to the one that
was on the can and I kept it the same for the slogan. I also used the same colour orange for both the slogan and name of
the drink as I did for the name of my drink and slogan on my actual drinks can. I then placed a Twitter and Facebook logo on
the bottom of the advert so people can get information about the drink on social media sites. I changed the ‘Hue’ of the
logos so that they would match my colour scheme of orange and it blends in a lot more with the advert and doesn’t look
too bold. I placed a mock version of my can as an example of what it would look like when my finished can design is on the
advert and I used an image of a grasshopper to advertise the drink and promote how much energy and power you can get
from the drink because the insect is so small and weak and by showing that something so small can hold the can is showing
how much energy is within the drink itself and I found it a really interesting way promote the drink as it’s very different. I
found an advert similar which used the idea of an insect to hold the drink so it showed how much energy was in the drink
and that’s how I came up with the idea. I changed the ‘Hue’ of the grasshopper to an orange colour so that again it would
go with the colour scheme of my advert but I felt that changing the colour of the grasshopper made it look quite unrealistic
and it also caused a loss of detail in the image so elements of the grasshopper was lost. To improve this I would get the
image of the grasshopper but not change the hue of it so that it looks a lot more realistic and stand out more on the page. I
also think that the website address on the bottom of the page gets lost on the advert a little because it doesn’t really stand
out a lot and using the colour orange causes it to blend in with the advert a lot more so changing the colour to a more bold
colour that isn’t orange will help it stand out from the advert for the audience to see. I felt that I had proportioned
everything on the page really well and by using the ‘Ruler’ tool on Photoshop, helped me guide everything into the right
place and proportion it all so that it lined up well. I think that using a stroke around the outline of the writing of the name of
the drink and the slogan would help it stand out more on the page and draw the audiences eyes to that part of the advert
and by adding more text to the advert to promote the drink might have been useful as it would make it more persuasive for
the audience and would make them buy the drink more.
6. Task 6: Advert Evaluation
What are the aesthetic qualities of your work?
Out of all the adverts that I tried out, I felt that this advert was the one that looked more aesthetically pleasing because of
the way the advert is layed out and how the colours and the way the advert is presented on the page. I wanted to have a
clean and simple look to the advert without it being too crowded because I wanted it be similar to the design of the can and
have a clean look to it with it being an organic energy drink. I really liked the simplicity to the advert for Pure BIO Energy
because it explained the point it needed to by using an image and not using words to promote the drink. They have kept the
background clear with no patterns or anything to distract the audience and that’s why I only used a subtle image of oranges
and a gradient effect to just add something to the background so it wasn’t really that boring for the viewer and this then
matched with the flavour of drink I was promoting. I felt that the banner at the top was the right size and didn’t overpower
the advert but it framed the advert in a way and it also created a contrast between monochrome and colour and this also
links back to the can design. It also promotes the fact that the drink can be for any occasion (sports, parties or studying) and
it’s for any social class. I think that using the same colour scheme makes the advert look relatable and not out of place or
confusing for the audience and it works really well apart from the colour of the grasshopper because it looks out of place
and doesn’t look right being orange as it makes it look unrealistic. Pure BIO advert uses an image of an insect but keeps the
colour of the actual insect without changing it and it works a lot better than changing it to fit the colour scheme. I really like
how they use a shadow at the bottom so it makes the can on the page look more realistic and this could have been
something I could of looked into to make the lift of the can look realistic. I could of shrunken the insect a little more to show
the proportion of the insect to the can a bit more realistically but having it the proportion that it is isn’t a problem for the
advert because it fills up the negative space. There isn’t any negative space within the advert which is quite good and I don’t
think that the advert looks overly busy but I think maybe testing the advert out as a landscape as well as a portrait and to
also test it out with a white background could have been useful. This is because I could of then seen which one suited the
advert better as I think that using a white background would of helped certain elements of the advert stand out more (e.g.
the grasshopper and name of the drink). The colour of the advert and the fruit which is in the background will all change
depending on what flavour of drink is being promoted but for this one I decided to see what
the orange flavour would look like. The use of a competition or more persuasive text could have
been useful for the advert as it would make it more persuasive for the audience and promote
more sales. The advert is really bright on a whole which will make it stand out when being seen
by the audience and this makes it more aesthetically pleasing than quite a dull advert. The can
is one of the main focal points of the advert which is what I wanted because it’s what is being
promoted so by having the can stand out the most on the advert is what draws the audiences
eyes to it. The advert is a little top heavy because of the banner at the top and without having
something quite as bold at the bottom makes it more top heavy and this isn’t as successful.
7. Task 6: Advert Evaluation
Are there any opportunities for further development of your work?
For my advert, I think that there can be slight development that is needed either to make the advert better on a whole or to
just adjust because it doesn’t look right for the advert. I think that I could have tested a white background for my advert as
well as using the gradient for the background as well as I feel that a plain white background would have been very effective
as well and would of helped the certain elements stand out on the page. It would have also gone with the organic energy
drink can as well because I used a clear background for that as well and when looking at adverts that are promoting energy
drinks, they all use a white background to go with the idea of it being organic and clean. Out of the adverts that I have
looked at (which are all at the bottom) they all use a clear white background and this really helps the drink and the fruits on
the page stand out a lot more on the page which I think is really effective for an advert. I think I could of also turned the
opacity down on the banner so it isn’t as bold and doesn’t make it as top heavy on the advert because it will then help the
banner flow into the advert and not just look like a block on the page. Making the grasshopper green instead of orange
would make the grasshopper look more realistic and not as out of place and I would also crop it down a little smaller so that
it looked more in proportion with the can, even though the viewer will be able to see the proportion anyway, it would make
it more realistic. At the bottom of the page is a selection of organic drink adverts, they don’t use any writing to persuade
the audience to buy the drink but I feel that for my advert I could have added a little more writing just to promote the drink
some more and made it more persuasive for the audience. I think that trying to do the advert landscape would have been
quite an interesting idea for a poster advert and in some aspects could be quite difficult but looking at some of the existing
products, there is not many organic energy drink adverts that are actually portrait and I think it would of helped frame my
advert and drinks can a lot better. Quite a large quantity of organic energy drink adverts use minimal imagery or writing but
I really like how the adverts use fruit that is in the drink as the only imagery on the advert and a glass full of the drink so
that the colour of the drink relates to the fruit that has been used and the audience can see that. I think that this is
something I could further develop into my advert as I think it is an interesting idea and it keeps the advert simple but full of
detail from the fruit and I like the idea of using the glass which is full of the drink so you can see the different colours from
the different flavours. Some of the adverts just use the can on the advert with all the different flavours just so people can
see the different flavours of the energy drink and I think even something like that can come across quite effective and I think
it could work really well if I use shadows in the advert
really well because this will then make it more
realistic. By using a bolder colour for the web
link, it would make it stand out more on the
advert as it gets lost within the advert because
of it being the same colour as the background
nearly.
8. Task 6: Advert Evaluation
Is your final piece fit for purpose?
The advert for my drink fits the purpose for this project as I feel it clearly states the drink and advertises it well compared to
existing products. The name of the drink is clearly seen and has a lot of space around the name of the drink because having
the space around the name helps it stand out a lot more on the advert and makes it easier for the audience to see. The font
is easy to read and the colour also makes it easy to read and the audience won’t be struggling to read it. There is enough
room kept between the slogan of the drink and the name of the drink which helps the slogan stand out and the name stand
out as well. The colour of the background and the image in the background doesn’t become distractive even though it’s not
clear but because the opacity was turned down on the image, it doesn’t become too bold and sits nicely in the background.
The image of the drink it really big and the label is easy to see so the audience will be able to see what the drink is and
notice it easily on the advert and it is very clear on the advert. The banner at the top links really well with the advert and is
advertising the fact that the drink is for all social classes and for anything and so the images of different people doing
different things relates to the message of the drink and for who it is for. I think that the idea I have used to advertise the
energy of the drink and the power you gain from the drink is reasonable and is easy for people to understand. The target
audience for my drink is mainly for women because of the feminine font and colours and the less calories that it promotes
but I feel that the advert is quite unisex and isn’t really feminine or masculine. Even though the font and the colours are
quite feminine, I think that it doesn’t gain anymore feminine apart from those two points which I feel came out better than I
expected because it will promote a larger audience for the drink. I feel that it appeals to the right age group and doesn’t
promote such a younger audience which is good because I wouldn’t want to be attracting children for my drink because it’s
still an energy drink. I do think my advert is very mature and the images are of a very high quality as well as the advert on a
whole being high quality. There is nothing in my advert which would cause concern and would go against the set of rules
that is set by the ASA so I am very happy that it wouldn’t be a hug concern to people when they see it. Having the can tilted
on it’s side, turns the label on the can the right way and I think that this is useful because it helps the audience see the
name of the drink again and the details on the can are all the right way which is really useful for the advert. The colour
scheme of the drink matches the colour scheme on the can and the image of the oranges in the background matches the
image on the can as well which causes the advert to link with the can and the flavour of the drink
and this causes everything to link together on a whole. I think that the advert has a subtle message
to it as there isn’t much writing apart from the name of the drink and the slogan to the drink so
showing that it’s for everyone and any activity in the banner and the power that the drink gives
you by using an insect to show that is quite a good skill to use as your not persuading people with
writing but with the imagery and this is what quite a few of the other organic energy drink adverts
do already. Overall, I feel that the advert has been advertised really well and met the standards of
The ASA and it has fit the purpose of an energy drink advert from looking at exsiting adverts but to
Improve it that little bit a white background would have been interesting to use for the advert.
9. Task 6: Advert Evaluation
What areas of planning and development worked well?
I feel that there was a lot of knowledge and help I gained in the planning stage for my energy drink and for the development
stage. To get the right result, the development stage is critical because you are not going to get the right advert straight
away and even if you thought you was going to, having other mock ups will help you make that decision more clear. It
especially made me clear as to what advert stood out the most to me and even though it was my first draft it didn’t matter
because having a go at different adverts that didn’t exactly fit in with an organic energy drink advert, helped me decide. I
felt that this went successful for me because I thought that having a few drafts of the advert would help me pick which one
would work best or even if I could use some ideas from each advert and link them together then that would be useful for
me. I felt that doing a flat plan of the can design worked really well because I got to visualise what my label would look like
and it helped me see what parts of the can design worked and which parts I needed to focus on a little more and change
around. Without doing this, I wouldn’t of been able to get the right result for my can as I was looking at existing products
that were organic energy drinks so I had an idea in my head but without trying it out then it might not have worked for me
so getting to design it was really useful for me and worked really well setting up a few drafts to test out the different
flavours. I decided to see what the different flavour of cans looked like because I wanted to make sure that the colour
scheme I had chosen for some of the flavours wasn’t too light or hard to read so I made sure I tested a few out before
moving on to the next part of the project. I felt that the mind map I did for the project at the start worked really well and
was useful for me. This is because it helped me get a range of ideas that would link to my main idea of designing for an
organic energy drink and I was really struggling to think of names for the drink so getting a wide range of names that I
thought of and put them together and then selecting one made the process a lot easier. It also let me think about slogans to
use and the different colours and graphics to use for the drink so this then helped make the designing stage a lot easier
because I could then test out different graphics and colours on the drink to see what worked better and what didn’t work as
well. I also thought that getting a range of fonts together to test out for the name of my drink worked well for the project.
This is because I could get an idea of how the font would look like on the can and which ones would work the best and
which ones could be hard to read/not as successful as some. Testing out the different sizes of the fonts later on in the
planning stage helped me get an idea of how the fonts would look like when they were either for the name of the drink or
for little selections of information on the drink. This then helped me weigh out what fonts worked for what style of writing
for the drink and getting to see the thickness of the fonts helped me as well because I was filling the font in with colour and
it was quite pastel colours so getting to see the thickness gave me an idea of how easy the font would be to read,
depending on what context it was going to be used for. Also, getting to see what the name of the drink looked like using
different fonts was successful for me as well because I then got an idea of how it was going to look in the chosen fonts I had
decided on. I could then eliminate which ones weren’t as good as some of the others and this helped me narrow down to
which font I wanted to use as I had started off with a selection of fonts and needed to decide which one was helpful. So
without this stage I would of struggled to decide which font was write for what part of the can.
10. Task 6: Advert Evaluation
What areas of planning and development could have done with more work?
I felt that the planning and development stage was very successful and helped me narrow down different colour, fonts and
graphics and helped me get a general idea of what my can will look like. I felt that the development stage in some areas
could have done with a little more work. I felt that I wasn’t exploring different styles for the can and being adventurous to
see what different themes for the drink would look like and feel like for my audience. I had a clear idea of my target
audience in my head and I knew that some of the graphics on the can and the colours would appeal to that audience so I
felt I succeeded in this aspect. But I did feel as if the drafts only had some minor tweaks made to the design and there
wasn’t a huge variation between the drafts so I felt as if I could of tried completely different styles to what an average
organic energy drink would have and could of tried a black background instead of a white one and been completely
opposite to how an organic energy could look like and see what I think of it. I could of tested out different banners across
the top of the can and done a wider range of different flavours to see what other flavours would look like with the different
colours but I felt that the image I had in my head for the can was completed in the couple of drafts that I did and if there
was any improvements I needed to make I had the actual product design stage to do it in before it is complete. I felt that
there wasn’t much more to be worked on in the planning stage but I did feel as if the ideas section was a bit weak and I
didn’t really use a lot of the ideas that I had thought of into the next stage. I could of then developed more of my ideas into
little bullet points so I could have a wider range added onto the point and this would of helped me get a general idea of
what I wanted from each of the ideas to develop. I felt that in my advert development stage I could of developed more into
the bottom two adverts instead of focusing on the top advert a lot more as the other two adverts could have been
successful as well. I could of looked at a wider range of adverts that were already out there to see how I could of
experimented with different adverts and how to appeal to the audience and how more organic energy drinks are advertised
rather than looking at just one and getting a good idea and wanting to stick with that. I now feel I could have been more
flexible with my adverts and I feel as if I had restricted myself a little as I had my heart set on the first idea I had did and
didn’t really focus as much on the second and third draft. But then I realised they all had really good ideas in each one and I
could have done a fourth draft and combined all my ideas that I thought worked in all of my adverts and seen what the
outcome looked like. This then would of either worked for me or wouldn’t and even if I didn’t I still had all the backups that
I did. I then could have planned out my advert a lot better and maybe created a mind map to help me get some ideas going
just like the planning stage of my drink and this would of then made the designing of the advert a lot easier for me to design
the advert and not struggle as much as I felt I did. I also felt that I could have had a few variations of one advert in particular
to see if different graphics or colours would of gone better with the advert and this then would of given me a wider
selection to chose from as I struggled to decide which one I wanted to go with. I felt that the planning stage was important
and I should of done more planning in the advert stage because I wouldn’t then have struggled so much and I felt that this
was the area that could have done with a lot more work in my eyes to make it easier for me.
11. Task 6: Advert Evaluation
What effect did you think your development stages had on your final result?
I felt that the development stage for the advertising of my energy drink was vital and really important to me as it helped me
a lot and it’s just a shame I didn’t plan out my advert before the development stage. I think that if I had of planned out
different ways to advertise the drink and how to make the advert look persuasive for the audience then it would have made
the development stage a lot easier for me and helped me get a general idea of where my advert was heading to. I think that
for my advert, the development stage helped me progress my advert as I started off with a really simple design as you can
see in the first 3 screenshots, I then wanted to develop the advert to make it a lot more interesting and to persuade the
target audience to buy the drink. So I then went through and added bits to the advert and deleted parts which didn’t work
as well and this was really successful for me because I could then develop my advert to make it a lot more intriguing for the
audience but without the development stage I wouldn’t have been able to get the end result. I also then decided to test out
a few more adverts which didn’t really look like a typical organic energy drink advert as I used a dark colour scheme for one
of them and used a black background to make it really dark and this type of colour scheme is associated with high caffeine
energy drinks rather than organic energy drinks. Without doing these few testers, I wouldn’t have been able to see what
advert worked best for my drink and what style of colour scheme would work best and so being able to test some out made
me easily decide my end result. I felt that I could have looked at some more existing adverts out there as I had looked at a
few but I wish I had collected a range and brought some more ideas together so that I had created an advert that appealed
to the audience as much. This is because the advert looks aimed more towards males and females rather than just females
like my drink is being aimed at. The development stage to me had a huge effect on my end result and without the stage I
wouldn’t have progressed my advert as much as I could have done but with being able to see how undeveloped it was to
start off with compared to the end result, needing that time to develop my advert was crucial. I felt that I could have
developed my advert a lot more than what I had done and if I had planned it beforehand I wouldn’t be in that situation but
I’m still really happy with the final outcome of my advert and I feel that it fits the purpose to advertise the drink and done in
a mature and interesting style. I still kept certain aspects from my advert and tried them out in different styles e.g. the
banner in the adverts that is on my can as well is placed at the top, bottom and side on the different adverts and then I
changed the opacity on some of them and the blending methods to see what works and what doesn't. So getting the
chance to try these out on different adverts made me look closely at what worked and what didn’t.
12. Task 7: Product Development
This is my first draft to my final product and I decided to go with the dragon fruit flavour
drink and use pink as my colour scheme for this can. I think that the banner on the top
really suits the style of drink as it shows that it is for every event and social class and all
the images are clear to see and contrast really well with the colour and the white
background on the can. For every different flavour will be a different set of images in the
banner as they go through every decade so another flavour will display a different decade
in the banner. I feel that the side of the can which has the writing and the girl running could
be developed further as I don’t think it’s that strong on the can and doesn’t stand out to me
especially as I feel the front of the can is so strong compared to that side. I feel that the
writing could be changed to make it a lot more interesting and state a little more facts
about the drink itself and I feel that the girl could have some effects on it to make it look
more realistic and to make it look as if she is actually running. I feel that the fruit that has
been cut out on the front of the can has been done really well and it sits perfectly on the
can and I feel that all the writing on the front of the can works really well. The colour
scheme is easy to read and it stands out really well against the white background and
having it al the same colour scheme links it all together. I think that I will update the back of
the can where all the nutritional information is as I got the image off the internet and it
doesn't actually match the drink that I am designing for so creating my own will support my
drink and make it more realistic. I could also add the ingredients that will be put into the
drink and so this will then give the audience a clear idea of what is being added into the
drink. I feel that there is some minor changes that need to be changed to make the can
more realistic and a little more appealing to the audience but I feel that the strongest
element is the front of the can and this will be what the audience will see on the shelves so
this is really good that I have got the strongest element as the front of the can. I feel that
the design of my can appeals to my target audience really well because of the colour
scheme and the advertising of the less calories in it and my target audience for this drink
was mainly females. So when they see that the drink has hardly any calories in it and see
the really feminine graphics and the feminine colours scheme it will appeal to them more
than a male audience. I feel that the overall design is really clean and refreshing just like
an organic energy drink normally is so I feel that the overall theme and look of my drink is
really appealing and is very clean and that was the look that I was going for and I have
achieved that really well looking at the design.
13. Task 7: Product Development
I have redone my final design and worked on a few areas which I felt had let me down in
the first draft. I kept the front of the can the same as I didn't want to really touch this
because I felt that this was my strongest element of the whole can so I just worked on the
back and side of the can. On the back of the can, I deleted the image I got off the internet
of the nutritional information and worked on my own by using an existing organic drink for
ideas on how to present mine. I made all my nutritional information as to how many
calories and fats where in my drink and then added an ingredients section onto the bottom
of it so that the audience got a clear idea of what was in the drink itself. I first decided to
have all the writing pink to match the colour scheme but I felt is would be quite hard to see
for the audience so I changed it to black and kept the title of the sections in the pink. I
added a badge for Fair-Trade, Vegetarian Society and Soil Association as I felt all these
needed to be added to the can as the drink is organic and suitable for vegetations as well.
I added some more information on the side of the can to try and persuade the audience to
buy it as it includes a little more about the drink and some more facts about it. I still feel
that I should do more to the graphic of the girl running to make it a lot more realistic or just
a little more interesting on the can because I feel this is the weakest point of the can
design. I could even get rid of the graphic and change it to add more facts on that side of
the or change it for another graphic which is a lot more interesting. I could even duplicate
the fruit to add there and make it a lot bigger and more interesting with an actual image
rather than a graphic as I feel the graphic is quite grainy and not as high quality as I would
like it to be. So maybe using a picture instead would work a lot more better. I also added
on the bottom of the can how much ml the can is as this was missing from it and it just
adds to the realistic effects of the can. I feel that the whole can design is finally coming
together with just a few minor elements that need changing to make it come together a
little bit more but I feel it has progressed a lot since my first draft and then I can start
designing different flavours of cans and get a full range of cans together. I feel that the
front and back have been fully worked on and it’s come together really well and again it
appeals to my target audience because of the colour scheme and fonts as they are very
feminine. Once the side has been done I feel that the coverall can design will be complete
and to my standard of how I want it to look. I think that the grids have been used right to
create the design as everything is lined up properly and works well and is all in the right
place to how I want it to be placed on the can.
14. Task 7: Product Development
For my final draft of my can design, I feel that I have completed it really well and got the
right design that suits the style of drink and suits the overall design of the can. I decided to
scrap the graphic of the girl running because I feel that the whole can has a really
professional look but the graphic of the girl running gives it a less of a professional feel
and there is a lot of negative space around the graphic and I feel that I could use the
space up a lot more by using something else. In the end I decided to use the image of the
dragon fruit and I enlarged it on the page to make it fill all the negative space around the
can. I feel that this gives the can a lot more of a professional look and makes me use all
the space on that side of the can which supports the writing a lot more. I haven’t changed
anymore of the can as I feel that is all looks absolutely fine now and because everything
that I wanted has been changed, I can’t think of anything now to look into and change
about it. The drink will appeal to my target audience as the font is really feminine rather
than masculine, the colour scheme of it being pink matches the target audience as well
and I feel that even the more masculine colours will appeal to females because of them
being all pastel colours instead of bold and bright colours as the colour as will be a lot
more toned down and softer. The overall style comes across a lot more feminine than
masculine and the flower graphic on the back of my can adds to the feminine design of
the can. I feel that the images and graphics on the can are very high quality which is really
good because it will come across really professional. All of the images are placed really
well and I really like how the dragon fruit on the side of the can goes to the bottom of the
can rather than trying to fit the whole image on the can I really like how it just overlaps
onto the bottom of the can. I am really pleased with the final outcome and so I can now try
different flavours to see if they are just as successful as this flavour. I will then be able to
have a full range of my drink with the different flavours and so I will be keeping all the can
designs the same apart from the colour scheme and the images but I will won’t change
the graphics or the font on the can. I used for the back of the can a really easy font to
read which was the ‘Arial’ font because it’s easy to see and read and I just wanted a
standard font which would stand out to the audience and so they wouldn't struggle to read
it. I used for the name of the drink and the writing on the side of the drink the ‘Florence’
font because it was slightly bold and it was easy to read and was italic so it would be easy
to fill with colour and see from a distance because I wanted a font that would stand out on
the shelf and it’s also very feminine so it can appeal to my target audience.
17. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
What are the technical qualities of your work?
For the overall design of my can, it involved a lot of different skills and patience in Photoshop as I wanted to achieve the
right result for my design so making sure I was refining my work to develop it more was vital in this part of the project. I
decided that I would create a range of different flavours for this design as I wanted to see what different flavours would
look like. Firstly, I used the ‘Ruler’ tool to create the sections of every side of the can (the front, side and back) and this
would then give me a guideline as to how much room I have to work with in each section. I then selected the font that I was
going to use for the name of the drink and then when I had written it I rotated the name 90 degrees CCW so that it was
sideways as I felt that this would give me more room on the front of the can to add images and writing onto it and as it’s
quite a long name, it wouldn’t have fit properly if it wasn’t sideways so this way it worked out better. I then created a line
across the top of the can so that I could work out how big each image was going to be across the banner as I wanted them
all to be the same size. This meant that I needed to use the ruler again to separate each image and I made sure that every
one of the images was the exact same size as each other. I added all the images in which were all from a certain decade and
displayed different social classes and events as this all linked in with the audience of my drink as I want it to be used for any
occasion (big or small) and for any social class. For the image of the fruit and the graphics on the can, I used stock images
for this and then had to delete the background out of the image so that it was just the image of the fruit and it faded into
the background of the can. To do this I used the ‘Magic Eraser’ tool which rubbed out the whole background from the
image for me and then I could just transfer the image onto the can design. I then transformed the size of the image to how
big/small I needed it to be on the can and placed it in the right spot. For the graphics on the can, I filled in the graphic which
was all black and changed the colour to the same pink to the slogan on the can so that the theme was all pink and it all
linked together. I added different logos from different companies that associate with the drink I have made and I used the
‘Text’ tool on the design to add the ingredients, nutritional information and extra information needed to know on the can
and then placed them all where I needed it and for the slogan and the flavour of the drink, I rotated it 90 degrees CCW so
that it was facing sideways. I changed the can design quite a few times as I had a graphic of a girl running on the side of the
can where the image of the dragon fruit is and then I decided to make it look as if it was running by pasting 2 of the same
graphic and fading the second graphic so that it was really pale and gave it the effect of it running. I kept the
background of the design white so that the writing on the design stood out a lot more on the can. I had to
use a lot of skills that I have learned over the past year to add to the can design and to get the right end
result for the design. Using the rulers throughout the course of designing stage to place certain writing or
graphics helped it all balance out right and line up properly and without using the ruler tool, it would of
made it a lot harder to place objects onto the design. I placed the barcode and scanning code at the bottom
of the can and I used stock images for these and I then placed the graphic of the flower behind the barcodes
so that it would sit nicely behind it and not look as bold but makes the barcodes stand out a lot more.
18. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
What are the aesthetic qualities of your work?
The overall look of my can design I think is very clean and mature and this was the look that I wanted to go for with it being
an organic drink. From looking at existing organic energy drinks, they have very pale backgrounds (mainly white) so that it
looks clean just like an organic energy drink is and then they make sure it isn’t overcrowded with images and writing and
everything is very simple but contains a lot of detail. I then decided that depending on what flavour the drink is, I can have
the colour scheme to match the flavour so that it all links together and when I looked at existing organic energy drinks,
some of them did the idea and I felt that it would work really well and link it all together. I felt that the banner across the
top of my energy drink contrasted really well with the colour in my drink because the monochrome and the colour both
contrasts but works really well and it stands out on the can but it also helps the colour stand out on the can. I made sure
that the name of the drink was bold on the can so that it was one of the first things that the audience would see when they
are on the shelves and I wanted it to stand out. I also decided to make the name of the drink a darker pink than the rest of
the writing because it helps it stand out on the can and doesn’t make it harder for the audience to read and see. I feel that
my energy drink design matches my target audience and will stand out to them as I wanted to aim my energy drink towards
females rather than males and I feel that this has been achieved with the font I have used as it is very feminine and the
pastel colours and use of the vintage images at the top. It all links well to the target audience and I could see more females
buying the drink than males. All the nutritional information on the can and the ingredients can be easily read without a
struggle because of the easy to read font and the plain black text helps it stand out against the white background and
having the box around the nutritional information makes it separate from the rest of the design. The size of the can is
presented in a clear and easy to see place and I feel that the strongest element of the can is the high quality images used
throughout and the simplicity of the design but how it’s still full of detail and doesn’t look boring but really bright and
vibrant. I feel that having the negative space around some areas of the design helps certain elements stand out on the can
and then it doesn’t become too crowded and busy because I've left some space for some of the elements to breathe
without cramming it all together. This would then make it too crowded for the audience to read and see the elements of the
can and it would also make the design attract the wrong audience when I’m wanting to attract the right style of audience
that I have designed it for. Keeping the same colour scheme for the different flavours of drinks links it all together and then
if the audience can see what colour the can is, they will presume what the
flavour is so it makes it easier for the audience to see what the flavours
are from a distance as well. I feel that everything for my design has been
done well and to a high standard and I have achieved the outcome that I
was wanting for my drink. It will attract the right audience for the drink and
by using the rulers in Photoshop, the whole design has been well thought
about and has matched the result that I had planned in my head.
19. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
Are there opportunities for further development of your work?
Throughout the course of designing the actual can, I did a few drafts with a few minor changes made every time I went
along and even though I feel that I have completed it to the standard I wanted it to be, there will always be room for
improvement and development. I feel that the font I used throughout my design works really well and I feel that the colour
scheme is easy to read and is bold at the same time so I wouldn’t change anything like that on the design. But there is room
for a few minor developments. I could have added a box around the ingredients section on the can because I feel that this
would keep it separate like the nutritional information is and I feel that it would then keep it all together. I think that for the
graphic on the front of the design under the slogan of the drink, could have been tested out with quite a few different
graphics as I feel that the graphic is really big and chunky which is opposite to the delicate and elegant theme to the energy
drink. So I could have tried out different ones to make it a lot more flexible instead of just choosing the first one that I had
picked as I could have found a better one that went a lot better with the clean theme of my energy drink but I do feel that
the graphic looks good on the can. I could have tried out a diet version of my drink and this would involve a slightly different
design and colour scheme to the drink but it would have given me something to develop and tested out for the range of
drinks I have created. I developed the side of the design for the can quite a few times and I changed the writing and some of
the graphics then changed the graphics to images so I feel that this side has been fully developed to how I wanted it to be. I
feel that I could have tested out a few different colours for the background (quite pale ones) that match the colour scheme
of the drinks and made just a slight tone to the background and see if it worked better than leaving the background white. I
could have moved the name of the drink up the can a bit more as when I transferred the design onto the can to see what it
would look like, the name is right near the bottom of the drink and I don’t want it to be right at the bottom as it should be
up near the top so people can see it so switching that around a little will make it easier to see and read on the can. There
could have been a little more text on the can just to make it more persuasive to the audience when they read it and I could
have promoted the fact that the drink only has 15 calories in it because of the audience that I’m promoting the drink to
because females really like to see less calories in most things and this will persuade them quite a bit. The numbers next to
the different nutritional information could have been lined up better as some of them are a little out of place and so it
doesn’t look as realistic because it wouldn’t be made to be out of place. I feel that I could have developed the flavours a lot
more by creating flavours that have been mixed with two fruits so that I could have a more adventurous colour scheme for
the drinks by mixing two colours into one design and make it a little more eye catching. Also on some of the designs, all the
pictures across the banner don’t all line up properly and some are out a little so I could have checked a little better so that I
got all the images lined up properly and so none were slightly out of place. I don’t think that there could be dramatic
changes made to my design as I feel I have got them near to what I was looking for so all there is that needs to be done is
just a few minor changes just to make them a little better or just to develop them and test a few things out to try new
things and see if it works or not.
20. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
Are your final pieces fit for purpose?
The purpose of my drinks were to attract a feminine audience rather than a masculine audience that are young
adults/teenagers and no younger or older which are all in different social classes. I feel that the product I have created will
attract the audience that I want to attract as I have used very feminine colours in all my flavours of the product and even
the masculine colours are all feminine because they have been done in a pastel colour rather than a bright and vibrant
colour which is really overpowering. The images at the top of the can all show different social classes that are all at different
events or doing something at work or just on a normal day and this promotes the fact that the drink is for every social class
and there are even some images at the top that include men because I haven't designed the drink to stop men from
drinking it and if a man wants to drink it then they have the choice to and this would make my audience a lot bigger but the
overall design is towards females rather than males. The fonts are all very feminine because they aren’t really that bold and
they are more italic and quite curly and fancy and men would be more interesting in bold and bright fonts that are really
chunky and stand out a mile on the drink. The overall look of the energy drink is meant to be clean and stand out at the
same time and I feel that everything on the can stands out a lot because of the white background that I used but having
that white background gives the can a clean look rather than using a really thick black background as this wouldn’t really
look like an organic energy drink and would look more like a high caffeine energy drink by looking at existing products. The
drink is low in calories and quite low in a lot of other factors just like an organic energy drink should be because you don’t
want a drink which is full of sugar and caffeine when it’s meant to be an energy drink that is low in caffeine and calories.
This also helps aim the drink more towards females as they like to see drinks that are low in sugars and calories especially if
they are wanting to go to the gym and tone up as they will be wanting something to help with this and the if they are
wanting to gain energy without wanting to add calories or sugars to their bodies then organic energy drinks will be
something they look into. All the different flavours of the drinks match and they are all the same apart from the different
image of fruit changing to the fruits to match the flavour and the colours match them too but all the cans look the same and
this is what I was wanting as I didn’t want none of them to look different, even the images of the fruit all are a similar size
and not too out of proportion. All the writing on the design links back to the drink and doesn’t go off topic so it all works
and links together and slogan itself promotes the drink really well and explains the whole energy drink in 4 words. The drink
is also suitable for vegetarians which will broaden my audience a lot more as it won’t restrict vegetarians from drinking the
drink as I want my target audience to be quite large rather than only promoting the drink to a few people. The whole design
of the drink is suitable for an organic energy drink and it will fit the purpose when coming to selling the drink as I feel that it
would go far in terms of an energy drink. The name and slogan is simple but snappy and easy to read and understand and
isn’t too long so it isn’t complicated when it comes to reading the name of the drink and slogan. The slogan will be
something that is memorable when it comes to people remembering the slogan as it’s very short but stands out so people
will read the slogan and then remember it as it’s quite a memorable slogan.
21. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
What areas of planning and development worked well?
The planning stage was really important when thinking about my drink and the names, fonts, colours and imagery I will be
using for it as well. I felt that making the mind map for the overall idea of an energy drink was really important as I could
think about every idea that I am thinking of and then write it all down and then pick the best ideas from it to develop
further into the mood board that I did. It helped me decide on a few names and it also helped me decide on what style of
colours I was going for and narrow the vague ideas down to the tiny details of some of the ideas I was thinking of. I then got
a general idea of what I was looking for after I had done the mind map and then I could develop even further with the mood
board so I feel that the mind map went really well for me. I felt that the mood board was really successful as well because I
got to test out different fonts and this was important for me because I was filling in my font with a colour so I needed a
delicate and girly font which was also quite bold so that I could fill it in properly. So getting to test out the different fonts on
a page and seeing what they look like was really useful for me so then I could narrow them down later on in the mood
board and when I was testing out the different sizes. The imagery section of the mood board was successful and
unsuccessful in some elements. I felt that it was kind of successful because I got to get a few a ideas and images together to
see how they will look and then when I move onto the development part I could test out to see what they look like. Getting
to test out the different sizes of fonts was successful because it helped me see what different fonts looked like in different
sizes and the ones that would be my name for the drink would be the ones I felt worked well as a bigger size and then the
ones that I wanted to use for smaller elements of writing would be the ones that look better as a smaller size on the page
and this gave me a general idea of what to look for when I was doing my development stage. I could also test them out with
the name of my drink and this was useful to see written down so then it was easier for me to pick the font and then use it in
the development stage of my drink and then it makes it quicker for me than testing them all out in the development stage. I
felt that I couldn't have done anymore planning than I already did because as soon as I had decided what style of energy
drink I was doing and completed the mood board and mind map, I got a general idea of what I wanted for my energy drink,
the target audience for it and overall look I wanted from it. In the development stage, I felt that there were a few successful
elements to it. I decided that once I did my first draft I only wanted to do some few minor improvements to it to create the
idea that I had in my head. I felt that the development stage could have gone a little better and that I could have developed
the drink a lot more than I did. But saying that, I was really happy with the final outcome and all the elements of the
development stage helped me get to that point. I tested out a lot of different colours for different flavours as I wanted to get
the right pastel colours for my drink and match the right flavour with the right drink as well. I also tested out a few different
graphics from the girl running and the different size and colours I wanted for the graphics and I also tested out a few
underneath the slogan of the drink. This was because I wasn’t that happy with the graphics and wanted to make sure that I
used the right one for the drink and to make sure it matched the theme of the energy drink.
22. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
What areas of planning and development could have done with more work?
Some parts of the development stage and the planning stage could have done with more work or even some elements
weren’t really that necessary. I felt that the test of colours we did in the mood board was slightly unnecessary because we
tested out some colours again later on with the colour pallet so I felt that we didn’t really need to do 2 selections of colour
schemes and could have just tested out the colours using the online pallet and added it to the mood board. I felt that the
first set of ideas that I did to start off with could have been developed a little more as I didn’t really use much of the ideas
and to help out with the mind map it could have been useful to think of some more ideas to help out. It helped me get an
idea of what my target audience could be but it didn’t really give me enough to work with for my actual final can design and
I looked more into the mind map for ideas than the set of ideas I thought of at the start. None of them were really that
useful for me because I focused on more of different energy drinks rather and didn’t have many ideas for the organic energy
drink which was the idea I wanted to go with. I didn’t really use the ideas that I thought of for the imagery section of the
mood board and the only one I used was the graphics that I had placed on the mood board so I could have developed the
images that I had used the mood board into my final design or tested out a few more of the images that I had got to just see
how it worked with the final design. I feel that the development stage could have been a lot more developed because I feel
that I didn’t fully develop or explore the different images I had for the mood board or for the overall design of the drink and
the different ways I could go with it. I felt that I didn’t really explore the different ways I could have gone with the energy
drink or incorporate the different ideas I had and could have used. Instead I did my first draft of the can which I felt worked
really well and better than I was expecting it to, but then I just changed a few minor tweaks until I was actually happy with
the overall design. This included some of the graphics and the side of the can a lot as I wasn’t really that happy with the side
of the can and before I started to change all that, I only did a few testers for different flavours. But I could have done a lot
more development as I could have tested out different background colours to see what looked best and to get them to
match the flavours of the of the drink or I could have tested out a lot more of the graphics to see what would work better
with the overall design of my can. There was a lot more that I could have developed with the can and I feel that I didn’t fully
develop the can as much as I could have done because I was so fixated with the first idea I had done and just developed a
few minor tweaks from there to see what worked better. I think that the final outcome was what I wanted and all the
different flavours worked so well together and the different colours worked well too. I think that that when I put them on
the actual can template in Photoshop, it could have gone a lot better because I felt that the cutting out of the can and
adding the gradient effect over it to show the white from the design more made it a little messy around the edges because
at the bottom I deleted part of the can by using the ‘Polygonal Lasso’ tool as it didn’t look right with my design. But then
this caused the bottom to look really uneven and messy so doing that wasn’t a good idea so next time I would need to make
sure that I make it less messy and make sure it’s cut out properly so that it doesn’t look as bad for the design of my can but
it was only a template to make sure I knew what it looked like on a can.
23. Task 7: Packaging Evaluation
What effect did you think your development stages had on the final product?
The development stage was really important but at the same time not as useful for my product in some elements so it really
does depend because some elements did have an effect and some didn’t at all. I felt that the development stage is always
important when creating something that involves a lot of designing and thinking about as it helps you get a general idea of
what you are looking for and how you can develop your product further to get the end result you want. The planning for the
energy drink and the colour, styles, graphics and fonts was really thought about and it was really developed so that I got a
real clear image in my head for what I want my end product to look like. I felt that the planning stage helped me so much in
develop my ideas and create a better understanding for what I was wanting to achieve and how I could aim it to my target
audience so I didn’t think I could have developed my planning stage anymore because it gave me the ideas in my head for
what I wanted the energy drink design to look like. But I felt that I could of developed my final product a lot more than I did.
I got a wide range of flavours created so I could test out different colours for different flavours and different images for them
as well. But I did think that I could have done a lot more with the design as I could have tried out different fonts to see what
they looked like and if I felt that I liked them better or not. I also could have tried out different background colours and
different images and tested out different orientations for certain images or the writing on the design so I felt that I could
have developed the development further and this could of then made me change the whole idea and like something that is
completely different to what I already have as my final result. But then the development stage was helpful for me because it
did help me get the end result that I wanted even by changing only a few ideas and by developing those few ideas, it
changed a whole look of the side of the can on the final product. I felt that from some of the flavours I had tested out first,
they were quite bright and illuminate so toning them down in the end result made me change a few colours and tone them
down a little so even though it wasn’t a lot, it still had an effect on my end product because I could see that it wasn’t the
right colour I was looking for and needed changing that slight bit. Then I changed the graphic on the side of the can because
at first I had a girl running and had a few of them in different colours to make it fade from a lighter colour to a darker one
but I felt that this made the overall look of my design a bit childish and not as mature as I was looking for especially because
the rest of the can was really mature so this spoilt the design a bit. I then had the chance to develop this later on and so I
did so as I wanted to make it look better as I wasn’t happy with this side of the can
and so I changed it to an image of the fruit that I had on the front of the can but I
just made it a little bigger so that it filled the space I had left from removing the
graphic but then I felt that this made it a lot more mature and more appealing
than the graphic of the girl running. So this section was effected the most by the
development stage and I do think it is vital for this sort of project and was really
useful so then I could change a few things to make it how I want it to be but I feel
that I could have done a lot more in terms of really developing the whole design.
24. Task 8: Web Banner Development
I have done done quite a few drafts and developments for this style of web
banner. I first started off with something which was quite simple but got
straight to the point and displayed the name of the drink and the slogan
and then showed the flavour of which drink was being advertised. The web
banner is clean and the font, colours and imagery matches the same that is
on the can of the energy drink. The only problem that I felt I could improve
with this design is by adding the can onto the web banner and this would
then give the viewers an idea of what the overall can design looks like and
it would just add that little bit more to the advert to make it a little more
intriguing. But I do feel that this look goes really well with the organic drink
and it all links together with the can and I would change the image and
colours depending on what fruit is being advertised. I then wanted to add
something extra just to give it a little something to make it a little more
inviting and interesting. So I decided to add 3 images that were linked to
the can and placed them behind the text and I turned the opacity of the
images to 50% so that it would be easier for the audience to see the name
of drink. I think that again a can would be better for the advert so you can
see the overall look of the can and I feel that it’s really hard to see the
name and so a stronger pink would be needed so that it’s easier to see and
flows more against the images. I think that the monochrome images
contrasts well with the colours and it just adds that bit extra to make it more
exciting and it also links back to the can. For the last design, I decided to
try something completely different to the top two designs but keeping the
same size web banner. I decided that using the paint splatters would be
interesting to turn into a GIF file and get them to move and all the different
colours match the different flavours of drinks and that’s why I placed all of
the cans onto the banner so that the audience can see all the flavours
available. They can also see then that the colours from the paint match the
flavours. The reason why I chose a gold colour font was so that it wasn’t
being linked to a certain flavour that I had done and kept it really universal.
I do think that it works really well and looks natural and not too bold but
easy to read on the web banner. I feel that this web banner design works
the best out of all the 3 designs but I do feel the paint splatters are quite
bold compared to the natural and calm side to the drink.
25. Task 8: Web Banner Development
For these web banners, I decided to use a rectangle format and
this was so I could fit a lot more on and make it a lot more
exciting and bright than the last set of banners. For the first idea, I
got stock images of fruit exploding and cut them out so they had
no background on them and then for every fruit, I filled them in
with the colour of the fruit. I find that it looks really arty and bright
and colourful and it stands out so much but some of the fruits are
really hard to see what they are because of the splatter that is
with them. I think that the colour of the name of the drink is a
really good colour to have gone with because it is natural and
works well because then I’m not advertising a certain flavour by
keeping it one colour but I feel that the slogan fades away as it
isn’t that bold and doesn’t stand out on the page as much and
gets lost. I put the name of the website at the bottom of the page
and a Twitter and Facebook logo so that people can interact with
the drink on social media sites. I decided to put an image of an
apple falling into some water because it is the opposite to the fruit
exploding at the top and I felt to even it out, having the apple
falling out the bottom would work really well. I didn’t use a lot of
fruits like I did at the top because it would have made it too busy
and I feel it works fine as it is. In the second draft I decided to
keep the fruit as it was without adding anything else or filling them
in with colour because it would then just show the images of fruit.
I would turn them into a GIF file and make the fruit look as if they
were exploding and expanding and this would then work really
well and look realistic. For the bottom design, I felt that adding a
colour into the background would bring out the slogan more and
so I didn't want anything too strong but something to brighten it
up more at the bottom. I went for a really pale blue and decided a
gradient effect would work best. I used blue because it would
then link with the apple falling into the water. I then changed the
colour of the slogan to a darker purple/grey colour because it
would then look stronger on the page and not fade out into the
background.
26. Task 8: Web Banner Development
For my final draft of a web banner, I decided to use a square format
as I felt I would get a lot on it and as I have tried a rectangle format,
I wanted to see what it would look like on a square web banner. I
decided for this one it was going to let it be simple but look busy at
the same time. For the top draft, I decided that I was going to turn
the name of the drink and the slogan sideways just like it is on the
can design and then this would link them both together. I then
decided to put a smoke effect as the background because this would
give it a dreamy feel to it and then it also links to parties and events
as smoke can be used there and so it could make the can look as if
it’s VIP. But it doesn’t really link with the fact that it’s meant to be
organic and clean and refreshing so even though I like the idea, it
doesn’t really go with the theme of organic. I then put the can onto
the web banner because I wanted the audience to see the can and
see what it looks like and it’s nice and big on the page so it gets the
audiences eyes drawn straight to it. The colour of the font matches
the flavour of drink and it matches the colour fonts so it all links
together. In the first draft, it is really hard to see what the slogan
says because it is so light compared to the smoke so it makes it
really difficult to see and I want it to be easy for the audience to
read. In the second draft, I decided to turn the name and the slogan
round so that the audience can read it properly as it’s difficult to read
the top design. I then darkened the colour of the slogan so that it is
again easier for the audience to read against the smoke. I then
decided to add an extra can behind the first can because I wanted to
fill the negative space in the advert then it works a little more. I then
added some extra writing at the bottom to promote the fact that the
drink has less calories in it and this then would appeal to my
audience more as it will draw their attention to the advert. I left that
in the paler purple because it’s at the bottom against the white
background and not the smoke so it’s easy for the audience to read
and it matches my colour scheme. I would change the smoke in the
background into a GIF file and get the smoke to appear from the
bottom right hand corner.
27. Task 8: Web Banner Development
These are a couple of GIF files that I have made for my web banner. For my first
GIF file I decided to get the smoke to come out from the bottom right hand
corner. For the second GIF file I made the fruit come out of the cans and so
there is an apple that comes out of the bottom and then some fruit that comes
out of the top of the cans and this just looks as if they are exploding from the
cans with different flavours. I feel that the right GIF is a lot more effective than
the left GIF and I feel that I prefer this web banner the most out of the two of
them. I felt that the bottom GIF wasn’t as effective because you couldn’t really
get that smoky effect from it and it was quite bitty and I feel that the other GIF
file is a lot more smoother. I would attempt to try the other web banner as a
GIF if I had more time so I couldn’t get round to doing that one as a GIF.
29. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
What are the technical qualities of your work?
My web banner has a totally different look compared to my poster advert that I did. I do feel that my web banners are a lot
stronger than my adverts and link to the drink itself a lot better and the design of the drink a lot better. I started off with the
web banner as a still image but I changed it into a GIF file so the fruit that is coming out of the drinks actually move and
come out of them and it is a lot more effective as a moving file. To do this, I first created my still image web banner by using
the gradient tool for the background and giving it a blue wash at the bottom and then it fades out to white so it’s natural
and clean and it isn’t too bold or busy. I then added all the cans that I had created by transferring the Photoshop file onto
the web banner and then I rearranged them so they were the same size and went from front to back and all worked out
really well. I used the ruler tool to make sure that both sides had the same amount of margin for the drinks and so it made
both sides look equal. I then added the Facebook and Twitter logo at the bottom of the advert so that people can interact
with the drink on social media sites and enter competitions. I also added the website so I can entice people to look onto it
and buy products and this will engage more people with the drink and promote it a lot more. I put it in a small font at the
bottom so that it isn’t taking up a lot of room and it’s out of the way but with the black against the blue, it still stands out at
the bottom of the page. I added the name of the drink and the slogan for it with quite a simple and plain colour as I was
advertising all the flavours of drinks so I wanted to make sure I was using a universal colour so that it wasn’t a colour of one
of the flavours. I used the same font that I used for the name of the drink and the slogan that is on the can as I wanted it all
to link together and so using the same font helped me achieve this. I then added fruit that was exploding onto the web
banner and I changed this into a GIF file so that the fruit comes out of the can. I did this using Photoshop and using the
timeline at the bottom to turn the still images into a moving image and I did it by adding a new page in the time line and
moving the image a little and then every time I moved the image a little I added a new page and then this
created my overall look of it moving. It took quite a while to complete and get the hang of and I did a few
of the moving files so then I had practise before trying it out on this file. I think it has come out successful
and it works well but I'm not really a big fan of the GIF and I am debating whether I prefer the GIF or the
still image because I really like it still rather than it moving because the GIF doesn’t look exactly realistic
and I think that lets it down a little. But I feel that the writing is easy to read and the layout of the whole
web banner works really well and I feel that the technical quality of this web banner is a lot more technical
than the advert I tried at the start of the project. By using the timeline button to create a GIF has given me
extra skills in the project and helped me gain more knowledge using Photoshop. I do feel that if I had more
time to edit the GIF it would have come out a lot better and I could have added a lot more to it to create a
more complex GIF and different versions of it. But overall the web banner is clean, sophisticated and it
also matches the drinks can which is what I was wanting and by using the gradient tool it adds a little bit
more colour to the banner and it makes it look a lot brighter especially because I started off with it being
plain white.
30. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
What are the aesthetic qualities of your work?
I feel that the overall look of my web banner is very clean and it stands out really well and it will definitely catch the
audiences eye because of the bright and colourful side to the web banner. I kept a really minimal background and didn’t
want to add a lot of colour to it but I felt that adding the blue gradient was bright and made it stand out a lot more but
when the apple drops from the bottom of the cans, it has air bubbles from being dropped in water so having the blue
gradient adds to the effect of it being dropped into water. Having the cans placed in the middle of the advert helps draw the
audiences eye to the middle where the cans are. They are a decent size and quite big so you can easily see the cans and see
the detail on them so the audience will know what they are looking out for when they see it in shops. The font for the name
of the drink and the slogan is a really big size and this helps the audience see it and stand out to them and this then makes
it easier for the audience to read it. I wouldn’t say the colour I used is the best one for the advert but I wanted one which
was a universal colour and didn't link to a specific flavour of the drink and so that’s why I chose the colour I did so that it
was a universal colour. I do feel that the name of the drink is a bit dull and a brighter colour would have been a little better
for the web banner so it would have made it brighter because it is a really dull colour. The colour of the slogan is bright and
colourful and I wouldn’t change that colour and I feel that the name of the drink should have been in that colour as well.
But having the different colours separate the slogan from the title and gives it that bit of individuality to stand out on the
web banner. I think that using black for the web link at the bottom was a good idea and even though it’s really small at the
bottom of the page, it’s easy for the audience to see it in black and helps it stand out on the bottom of the web banner so I
think that using black was a good idea for this bit of text. I kept the font the same as the ones on the drink because I wanted
the web banner to link with the drinks can so having the font the same has worked really well and it also links the drink and
the advert together. The style of font I used is really feminine and this appeals to my audience because I want to appeal it to
a feminine audience and so using a really curly and feminine font will attract them a lot more than quite a masculine font.
Having the fruit come out of the cans of drinks expresses how fruity the drinks are and how powerful the fruit is when it hits
you and this is a really interesting way of showing it by showing how the fruit explodes from the cans. The whole design is
interesting and I feel that it works a lot better than my advertisement I did and I really do like it a lot better because it shows
more of the flavours of drinks and it’s a lot more refreshing and clean and this matches the overall look and design of the
can itself. The images are of a high quality and there is a professional look across the whole design and
this makes it a really high quality design and this again will appeal to the audience that I am aiming my
drink at. The GIF version of the advert is at a reasonable pace so it’s not too fast for the audience or too
slow for them and it stays on at the end for a while so
audience get an idea of the still version of it and then
it repeats itself but I feel that it is really successful but
personally I prefer the still image version to the GIF.
31. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
Are there opportunities for further development of your work?
I feel that there is room for further development and I do feel as if the GIF version could have a lot of development to make
it that little bit better for the web banner. I think that the gradient effect works really well but I could try out different
shades of the blue to see what version works better but I do feel the one I have chosen works well. The colour of the font
could do with a change because I feel that the colour I have used is really dull, even though it is universal which I was
wanting but it is so dull and not that bright and I want it to match the theme of the web banner because I want it to be
really bright and stand out a lot better. At the moment my gradient colour is standing out a lot and this draws the audiences
eyes to it and then the audience see the name of the drink after reading it on the image of the can so having a brighter and
more colourful font colour for the name of the drink would work a lot better. Having a blue (similar to the gradient colour to
get it to match) or a pale pink/red would work as well. I think that the colour of the slogan is okay but it’s a similar colour to
the purple on the ‘grape’ flavour can so I would want to change it so that it doesn’t match the colour on the can because
that’s what I was trying to avoid. But I do need to think about if I do change it would it fade into the background or not be as
strong so it could go either way when I do change the colour of the name. I do feel that the GIF could be developed a lot
more as I feel it isn’t really a strong point to the actual web banner itself. I think that for the pineapple I could have got an
image of an explosion and then the pineapple could have appeared from that explosion because of the black and grey patch
around it, it does look as if it’s been exploded. I could have then introduced different fruit in a different way by using
different effect to get them to appear rather than getting them all to appear from the cans. When the apple falls from the
cans I could have got water splashing so then when it hits the place I want it to stop it can have the water splashing and
make it more realistic and as if it was falling into water. Or there could be a massive explosion and then all the fruit appear
from it and this would work really well because of how the fruit has exploded and there is little bits of fruit everywhere so it
would link well to an explosion. I could also go with something completely different and get the drinks to fall from the top
and shake around before standing still from the impact or get the name to come in from the side or come up from the
bottom. This would then make it more interesting for the audience and just make the banner brighter and more exciting to
look at. I feel that my GIF web banner is quite simple and plain and I want to make it exciting so that the audience will be
really interested or impressed and this helps persuade them to buy the drink. But I do feel as if mine doesn’t really make
much of an impact on the web banner itself and looks quite boring. If I had more time to do it in I would have been able to
make it a lot more interesting and this would have then changed my view on what I have on the GIF file itself. I could also
get the slogan to come in from the side but with some power to it so then it matches the slogan itself by saying it has more
power and by introducing the slogan with power will be really different and relate to the slogan itself.
32. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
Are your final pieces fit for purpose?
I feel that my final web banner definitely promotes the drink and the different flavours that I have got of the drink itself. I
used the same font on my web banner as I did for my drink and this links the web banner to the drinks can itself and the
font is very feminine which appeals to my target audience as I want to aim the drink towards females. I think that the
overall design of the web banner promotes the drink more towards females compared to males because of the colours and
even though I used a blue colour for the background it looks a lot more feminine rather than a masculine blue and this will
promotes the drink towards females. The colour of all the fonts on the web banner is a natural colour that doesn’t link back
to one of the drinks so I did it in a really pale purple/grey colour and the colour looks very feminine compared to a
masculine colour which will also help promote the drink towards females. I did it so that it didn’t look masculine and helped
reach out to the target audience. The fruit element to the advert and the laid back and calm transitions in the GIF looks
more feminine as males will look for really bold and fast transitions and this is the complete opposite which I feel will work
more for females rather than male so I do feel that the web banner itself fits with the right target audience for my drink.
The overall look of the web banner is clean, simple but it’s also interesting and promotes the drink really well as a large
proportion of the web banner is full of the drinks itself and the design of them so this is what I wanted from the web banner
as I wanted them to be the main focus of the web banner and I didn’t want the GIF part of the web banner to take the
attention off the drinks itself so I feel that they stand out a lot on the page. The look of the advert matches the look on the
drinks design as it’s simple but it’s clean and it’s not too busy and with it being an organic drink I wanted it to still have the
clean and refreshing look to it without it looking really busy so the aim of my GIF file was to make sure that it wasn’t too
overpowering and to make sure it didn’t make the web banner look really busy overall. The web banner shows the
freshness by using the fruit and the water at the bottom and it shows the fruitiness with the fruit exploding on the page and
having the white background with a slight gradient shows how refreshing the drinks are as well. This then fits the purpose
of the advertisement because I wanted this outcome from them as I really wanted to promote the drink and the organic
qualities that the drink provides and the way it has been done really shows this to the audience. Having the web link at the
bottom with the social media buttons helps promote the drink as well as people can look on the website and social media
and this will then let the audience interact with competitions and get up to date with the drink itself and new flavours and
information about it. Overall, the advert itself is a lot more effective than the first advert I did (the poster advert) and I feel
this is because it shows a lot more qualities that the drink has compared to the first advert and I
feel that it has a stronger message within the advert. The overall look of the advert is really
powerful and it advertises the drinks really well and the whole advert matches the look of the
drink itself and so they both connect really well. I feel that the advert
is effective and I feel that it fits the purpose of advertising the drink.
33. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
What areas of planning and development worked well?
There are a few areas in the planning and development stage which I felt was successful and unsuccessful. I looked back at
my first advert that I did and I also looked back at the mind map which I had created at the start of the project. I did this for
inspiration and help on how I could create some web banners for this task. I had also looked back at a few web banners that
had already been created for organic energy drinks and this was so I could get an idea for where I could go with my web
banner. I decided that from looking back at some existing products, they had a simple look but was really powerful and
most of them didn’t really have much writing on them and just had images to promote the drink. For my web banner I
wanted to keep writing to a minimum so that I could promote the drink itself by using images but I felt that looking back at
existing products worked well for the development of my web banner as it gave me a lot of inspiration as to where I could
go with my web banner. I felt that the mind map helped me a lot as I could look at the ideas that I wanted for my drink
design and then use them for my web banner as I could gain ideas from it. It helped me narrow ideas down and then I could
use them in my draft and see if it works and then I developed them from there and see what they looked like. So I do feel as
if the mind map worked well for my as it gave me ideas for the web banner and this then helped me think of the design a
lot quicker. The development stage of my web banner was successful as well. I had thought of 3 potential ideas for my web
banner and once I had thought of my first design, the other ones came to me easier than I thought they would. For every
idea of web banner I did a different size of web banner as this helped me narrow down what kind of style I liked for my web
banner as there was a lot of different sizes to chose from. I then thought that the rectangle style for the web banner worked
a lot as I could fit all the detail on it that I wanted and I had enough room for the negative space on the web banner to help
elements stand out on it. For every web banner that I did, I did a few drafts of each one and they all had something different
on them. This then gave me 3 options within one web banner to decide which one was the best for the drink and then it
made it a lot more flexible so if I wanted I could of added a few different ideas together and see what happened. I think that
having a lot of options rather than a couple worked so well and it didn’t leave me thinking of what ideas to have and gave
me plenty of options. It also helped me narrow down what idea I wanted by looking at the other options that I had. I feel
that the development stage worked really well for my web banner as it was really detailed with a lot of different options for
my web banner and it helped me decide a lot easier which web banner worked a lot better than the rest. I do feel that there
could have been some more work added to the planning stage as I only used existing products and a mind map to guide my
ideas together and even though it worked for me in that stage, there could have been more added to the planning part to
help me gain some more ideas together and make
my planning more broader. But I do feel that the
web banner I chose was the right one for my drink
and all the ideas from the development stage
helped me chose which one I wanted.
34. Task 8: Web Banner Evaluation
What areas of planning and development could have done with more work?
I feel that most of the development stage and the planning stage was a lot more successful and worked well rather than
unsuccessful. I think that the planning stage could have done with a lot more work as I only used the first mind map I did as
the generator of ideas and some existing products that I had looked at to help me gain a visual idea of what my web banner
could actually look like. I think that I could have created a mind map especially for the web banner and this would of then
gave me a range of ideas that would be useful for my web banner. It would of also helped me create a design specifically for
the web banner rather than using a mind map that was for the design of the drink. This then would make it a lot easier for
me and would then be done specifically for the web banner so I could create more ideas based on that. I feel that I could
have looked a few more existing products for different energy drinks as I only looked at two and I felt if I had created a
mood board with loads of different existing products, even for different types of energy drinks I could have gained a lot
more knowledge and ideas from it. I feel that the development stage was really successful as I had gained a lot of ideas and
then put them onto the web banners and I had gained a real wide range of different designs but I do feel that I could have
tried out a lot of different GIF designs as I felt that I had only done the one and stuck with it for my final design so having a
range of different GIF files would have helped me find a successful one. I feel it worked well but there is a few things I would
change for the planning stage as it wasn’t as successful as the development stage.
What effect did you think your development stages had on the final product?
The effect that the development stage had on my final product was massive as I had a lot of different ideas and the
development stage helped me pick the right one to suit my energy drink. I had a range of different designs and by doing 3
different interpretations of one web banner helped me have more to chose from and also I could have used a range of
different ideas from the designs I had got and then made one final one. I created a GIF file for my web banner and for every
idea I had I made them into a GIF file and I feel that this had a massive impact on my final design. This is because some of
the GIF files didn’t look right and I didn’t like some of them so the one I chose was the one I felt worked the best but I do
feel that I could have tried a different range of GIF files for my final web design as I still feel that it’s not the best at all and
isn’t that successful. I feel that the final product I have created without it being a GIF file is really successful and works really
well and it matches the overall look of the can design and they both link together really well and so I do feel that I have
chosen the right design out of them all. If I didn’t have the development stage for my web banner then I would have
struggled to have created one which I felt was successful and it would have taken a lot longer than it has done as I would
have needed to think of one design and do it and if it didn’t work then it would have had to do as I wouldn't have time for
the development part. I do feel though that the development section was really successful and helped me create a web
banner that worked really well for me and my product and helped advertise the drink really well and I feel that the web
banner has worked a lot better than any of the other adverts I have done as it links really well with the design of the drink.
35. Task 9: Storyboard Development
For my first draft of the advert, I decided to
work in Photoshop to create it and went for
a simple but effective way of advertising the
drink. In the first box, the woman is in a
field and she is still in colour but the
background is all dark and in black and
white and is very dull and so she decides to
have a bit of her drink which is ‘Organique’
and this then changes the whole mood of
the advert. It then turns each individual part
of the advert into colour, e.g. it would start
doing macro panning in and out of the
grass, sky, tree and flowers when they turn
into colour. The model then is really happy
because of the outcome and this then has
a more positive effect. At the end of the
advert the can comes in first on a blank
slide and comes in speed and then the
slogan comes soon after and a voice over
of the model is put over of her saying the
slogan just to emphasise it a little more.
They come in from the left side and it
displays a lot of power because it shows
the energy given from the drink in more of
an indirect way and the monochrome effect
going into colour in the first two slides show
the power you can get and how much
fresher you feel from drinking the drink. For
my next draft I could stick to something
simple of be a lot more adventurous and try
something completely different.
To improve my storyboard a little further I could involve the weather and
instead of having a field as the background I could add the weather
behind the girl. For example the first scene could be really stormy and
thundering and horrible and when she has drunk the drink it could be
really sunny and bright and cheerful. It would be really similar to this idea
but by focusing on the weather rather than a scene will have a lot more
of an impact on the drink and a lot more forceful than just the
background. Or I could even make it a lot more gradual between the
stages of it going from black and white to colour. So I could make sure I
show the different stages of it going from monochrome to colour and how
everything changes from one to the other. I could change the last slide
by trying different ways of the drink coming into the slide and different
effects (e.g. so it could fade in or out or expand and shrink) and see what
works best. I could also try linking the drink to music and see if I can try
something really different rather than sticking with something simple.
