2. Identified Characteristics
• One of the videos I looked at for research was titled “Faustinos Patagonian Retreat” and is produced by
“Vice”. It is a small docu-series on YouTube about a man named Faustino Barrientos who has lived all alone
in the Patagonian mountains in Chile for the past 40+ years of his life. In the video they interview Faustino
and ask him about his daily life, occasionally speaking to the camera. I used this characteristic in my project
in order for my interviewers to talk about how they feel.
• Another video I researched was “7 Silent Facts About People Struggling with Their Mental Illness” and was
uploaded by “Psych2Go”. The video discusses a topic which is very relevant the one my video is based off of,
that being mental health. Another shared characteristic is the sections in the video that are dedicated to one
question or statement.
• The video I researched that bares the closest resemblance to my project is one uploaded by “Mind, The
Mental Health Charity” and is titled “Mental Health: In our own words.” The reason it bares the closest
resemblance to my project is because it includes interviewers answering multiple different questions about
their mental health. The video also includes sections that are dedicated to the questions, and each
interviewer gives their own different answer. That’s why is was the video that influenced my project the
most.
3. Context
• I chose to make my video based on mental health and how it was effected by lockdown because it is a very
important issue at the moment and I felt it needed to be discussed. I wrote a script for my lines on my iPad
so I knew what to say and how to say it.
• I used iMovie on my iPad to edit the video. I decided to use this editing software because it is very helpful
and allows me to use more functions and tools. The quality of my voice in narration sounds very clear and
smooth. I am also able to turn up the volume on the voice of certain interviewers and my voice when filming
outside the building.
• To film the video I used my friend to hold my iPhone 12Pro. And through the 0.5x lens. I wanted to use this
lens because it is the widest of all 3 lenses on my iPhone and shows the most of the surrounding
environment and area that I am in. The iPhone 12Pro also has very high video quality and colour saturation.
• I needed 3 friends to film themselves answering questions for my interview. I wanted 3 people to interview
because I wanted a variety of people in order to have much of a larger view on the topic. To get the footage I
sent my friends the questions with a list of instructions of how to take the footage. They had to film in
landscape which can be done on a phone by tilting the phone to its side. I needed it to be in landscape
because that was the format I was using. It is a bad idea to film in both formats, it wouldn’t look professional
at all.
4. Personal Learning
• One of the things I have learned is to never film in the stairwell because of the absurdly loud echo that can
make it hard to hear, especially when wearing a mask. This is due to the echo that surrounds the stairwell,
making the audio very unclear and hard to make out. To make it easier for the audience to understand what
I was saying I used the text icon to type subtitles for what I’m saying.
• In a few of my interview clips I had to do some extensive trimming to shorten the video in order to keep the
video under a 3 ½ minute runtime. To do this I used the split function to cut the important pieces of the clips
together and the lesser important clips out of the video.
• In the future I can use this project as a way of showing off my filmmaking and editing skills, which could be
needed for future jobs or courses that I want to take. It can also be helpful for people struggling with mental
health issues to watch the video and understand that they are not the only ones feeling whatever problems
they are feeling.
