Harleigh Williams
Week 1/4
Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork
Date: 16/01 Date: 16/01
Time: 2 o clock for about half an hour. Time: 2 o clock for about half an hour.
Venue: The field outside Worthing college. Venue: The field outside Worthing college.
Equipment: For the reaction drill used the following equipment;
Cones, stopwatch and football.
Equipment: For the footwork drill I used the following equipment;
cones, stopwatch and football.
Weather: It was really cold on Friday and the sky seemed quite
grey so no doubt it will be expected to rain. The field
was completely suitable to use.
Weather: It is still really cold and it started to spit a bit but this did
not affect the pitch or the test itself and therefore we
carried on as normal.
Coaches
Review:
‘It is great to see Harry taking this all in his stride. I like
to see my squad being challenged. He seemed very
attentive and really up for improving, this was
rewarding for me to watch’
Coaches
Review:
‘Although he has a long way to go, I definitely think he
will improve vastly as a striker. I’m hoping that this will
make my decision as a coach easier for trials . If he
improved his footwork, I’m excited for the future.’
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
Am I doing it right? What is my time? Any better? ‘Well,
this is much harder than I thought it was going to be but
a positive feeling as I hope to see improvement.’
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
Did I improve on the last result I got? ‘I definitely think
this is helping me improve, I just need to gain a bit more
confidence in myself.’
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
Yes, Harry was very attentive and quick to pick things
up. I definitely see progress being made.
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
Harry’s hard work carried on through with this
improvement priority and he is really dedicated to
improving.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
If No Describe:
I definitely feel that the next session should be more
advanced. I guess that I had underestimated Harry’s
ability to start with and therefore I will be sure to
create more tasks that suit his ability. More progression
is definitely needed. He needs to be challenged in a
specific way and I will look to do this by creating a
progression plan.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
If No Describe:
More progression I feel is needed, however he does
seem to struggle with footwork more than he does
reaction time. Therefore, I shall see how the next
session goes and see how if he is at just at the right
level or if I need to create something more innovative. I
don’t want him to focus on speed, it is all about the
accuracy that will benefit him in a game scenario.
Was
Contingency
Needed?
So far this being one of a few sessions that we have
had, contingency does not seem necessary.
Was
Contingency
Needed?
Harry did seem to tire towards the end but I think with
his coach Dave watching, he doesn’t seem necessary at
this stage.
Week 2/4
Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork
Date: 1/2/15 Date: 2/2/15
Time: 4.00 till 4.30 Time: 2.00 till 3.00
Venue: The field outside Worthing college. Venue: The field outside Worthing College.
Equipment: Football, Tennis ball, cones and stopwatch. Equipment: Cones and stopwatch.
Weather: Very cold and the field was a bit icy but we managed to
carry on as normal. However we did keep this session
short.
Weather: Still very cold weather but again nothing that affected
our ability to work on the field.
Coaches
Review:
Dave seems pleased so far with my efforts to keep each
session new and creative. He also seems satisfied with
how Harry is improving.
Coaches
Review:
Dave has been really helpful with aiding me in the
different drills and suggesting new ones for my
improvement priorities. I will probably revise some
weeks in my plan as I go along.
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
How will this improve my reaction time as a striker?
Harry is very keen and asks a lot of questions which also
helps me in the understanding of the drills and seeing
how he improves as a player.
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
Harry really liked the dice drill as it was different and not
too difficult which also made him enjoy it that little bit
more. But due to how easy it was I may think again
about repeating it in the following weeks or maybe
pairing it up with another drill.
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
I chose a different exercise to week 1 so I haven’t seen
any vast improvements with one exercise, but he is
definitely improving as a whole.
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
Again I will be improving the first exercise in week 1 on
week 3 so no drastic improvements yet but I definitely
feel there will be with time and practice.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
I do not think the progression plan is necessary as this
stage because it is still early in the eight week plan and
he needs to get to grips with the exercises a bit more.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
Again no progression plan needed just yet but he does
have the potential later on in the week for things to be
more challenging.
Was
Contingency
Needed?
If Yes Describe:
No back up plan needed this week. Was
Contingency
Needed?
If Yes Describe:
No back up plan needed this week, but if the weather
continues I may need to bring our sessions inside.
Week 3/4
Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork
Date: 5/02/15 Date: 6/02/15
Time: 2.30 till 3 Time: 4 till 4.30
Venue: The field outside Worthing College. Venue: The field outside Worthing College
Equipment: Cones, football and stopwatch. Equipment: Cones and stopwatch.
Weather: The weather is still very cold but this time the field is
probably getting a bit too hard for us to work on. I
worry that if we carry on Harry’s studs might get stuck
and I don’t want to cause him an ankle injury.
Weather: The field wasn’t that much better on the Friday so I will
arrange for us to do the drills inside from now on.
Coaches
Review:
Dave seemed happy that Harry improved his score and
suggested the move indoors as well because the
weather was getting quite unbearable to stand in and
watch.
Coaches
Review:
Dave did seem a bit concerned also with Harry’s
feedback about the footwork drill so I will definitely
revise this area and make improvements. Although,
Dave did seem pleased with his progress.
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
‘It felt a lot harder this time.’ Although Harry seemed
to tire quicker I definitely noticed an improvement
with his reaction time. So whether or not the
conditions effected him or he was just better with his
technique; him tiring easy did not affect the end result.
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
‘I think that this could be made harder. It seems quite
simple.’ I agree with Harry on this as the footwork
drills I have chosen are quite easy for Harry’s level of
performance. I will work on the progression for next
week.
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
There has definitely been progress in the cone agility
drill with Harry compared to Week 1. He really has
improved his time that I have been recording. He also
seems a lot more confident doing them.
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
The same goes for the stance and start drill, he really
has come into his own with these drills and a vast
improvement has been made. I am feeling very
positive about the next couple of weeks.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
Due to Harry’s progress so far I will definitely be
revising my plan and maybe adding in some of Dave’s
ideas. I will have to either make the drills harder or
increase the frequency and/or the intensity.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
If No Describe:
Harry is really making progress so I will be re-thinking
some of my strategies . But in terms of footwork I will
probably increase the intensity and frequency in some
areas as most of the drills are quite basic anyway.
Was
Contingency
Needed?
For next week I am going to definitely have to arrange
for it to be inside as it is just too cold for us to work
well together outside.
Was
Contingency
Needed?
For next week I am going to definitely have to arrange
for it to be inside as it is just too cold for us to work
well together outside.
Week 4/4
Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork
Date: 12/02/15 Date: 13/02/15
Time: 2 till 2.30 Time: 3 till 3.30
Venue: Worthing college gym Venue: Worthing college gym
Equipment: Football, stopwatch and tennis ball. Equipment: Speed ladder, football, Bosu Ball and stopwatch.
Weather: Not necessary as the training took place inside. Weather: Not necessary as the training took place inside.
Coaches Review: Dave thought that Harry seemed to work better in an
inside environment which really focused on his skills to
react quickly to the ball dropping. Dave also thought that
it really did seem to tire him out which showed he was
putting all of his effort into it which was great to see.
Coaches
Review:
Dave also thought that this was a good exercise to do
inside as it really took a lot of thought to get each station
correct. Dave also said that it looked like Harry was
enjoying himself which always helped with his ability to
complete the tasks.
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
Harry seemed to prefer it inside after the session finished,
his feedback was very positive and he was looking
forward to repeating it in the upcoming weeks.
Athlete
Feedback /
Questions:
Harry was much happier with this exercise as he thought
it challenged him more which he felt he was lacking in the
previous weeks. So it was great to hear positive feedback
from the basic tasks I originally set.
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
Progress is going really well at the mid point. I am pleased
to see him improving each week and hopefully the mid
point testing will really show that he has made a vast
improvement in this area of football.
Is Progress As
Expected?
If No Describe:
I am hoping to see real improvements next week as I have
increased aspects such as; intensity, frequency etc. I am
really looking to see him challenged which will hopefully
lead to vast improvements in this particular traits.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
I think that Harry is being challenged enough with
reaction time at the moment as it is a lot of
cardiovascular work. However, a progression plan will
definitely be needed for the footwork drills.
Are the Next
Session
Overload and
Progression
Plans
Appropriate?
Yes I have been able to revise the plan in order to
challenge Harry more with basic drills for footwork.
Hopefully by adapting the drills he will feel more tested
with this progression plan.
Was
Contingency
Needed?
Yes contingency was needed as I had to adapt the plan in
able to complete it inside. So I had less room to work in.
Was
Contingency
Needed?
Yes contingency was needed because I had to adapt the
plan for us to be able to complete the drill inside the
college gym.
Week 4 Review Testing Excellence Trait – Weakness 1/2
Trait: Reaction time

Test Detail
Method Here:
• Starting position: Easy running controlling the ball;
• Voice command of left, right, back or forward.
• To sprint in the direction of the command for a designated
distance, whilst controlling the ball, and then return to easy
running;
• Drill can be repeated 3 times with sufficient breaks.
Test Result 1: 31.26 Test Result 1 Rating: Delayed
Test Result 2: 29.24 Test Result 2 Rating: Delayed
Test Result 3: 25.39 Test Result 3 Rating: Instant
Best Result: 25.39
Best Result
Rating:
25.39 was the best result which is a definite improvement from
before which also was an instant response too. I am very pleased
that the eight week plan seems to be paying off. He was definitely
more alert and focused.
Week 4 Review Testing Excellence Trait – Weakness 2/2
Trait: Footwork
Test Name: The Star test
Standardised Test: Yes Normative Data: Yes
If Not A
Standardised Test
Detail Method
Here:
• This bespoke test develops change of direction and running speed
for a football player. Mark out a five-yard box with a centre cone in
the middle of the box. Place a speed ladder two yards outside the
box that will serve as the finishing point. The player begins on the
centre cone and runs out to touch all four corner cones, returning to
the centre cone each time. Next the player runs out to the speed
ladder and sprints through the ladder. Full recovery between efforts,
5 minute rest minimum in between.
Test Result 1: 29.03 Test Result 1 Rating: Poor
Test Result 2: 16.21 Test Result 2 Rating: Average
Test Result 3: 8.51 Test Result 3 Rating: Advanced
Best Result: 8.51 seconds was the best result at an advanced level. This is a slight
improvement from the previous testing but at least there is an
improvement. The original result was quite good anyway so it is
definitely a positive to improve by a little bit.
Best Result Rating: Advanced: 10 seconds and below.
Describe whether the tests show that
progress is being made as planned?
• The footwork test definitely showed that an improvement
had been made but not as much as the reaction time test.
This could be because the footwork drills are quite basic so
for week 5 I am working on progression plans to really
challenge him as a striker. Considering the circumstances of
my efforts to create the plan, progress is definitely being
made at a good rate in my opinion. Dave thinks that there
could definitely be some more improvement by the end of
the plan, but for now I think that the progress that has
been made so far is definitely a positive. His times
definitely improved with every test which was great to see
and Harry seems to be improving as a striker, which is also
great to witness from the drills that have been given to him
so far in the eight week plan.
Does the mid point review show that weeks 5-8
need to be adapted?
Describe How you will adapt your sessions?
• The mid point review has definitely flagged up
improvements that need to be made in terms of
progression in weeks 5-8. I will adapt my sessions by
increasing the intensity and the frequency of the footwork
drills in particular. If this is still seen to be quite relaxed for
Harry then I will also look in to increasing the time that he
completes the drills in. These will all be increased, not at
the same time, but as the weeks go on I will look at these
areas for making the improvements. I feel that this will
challenge Harry with the basic guideline drills that I have
set out. I will also look for feedback from Harry himself and
see if he has any suggestions in a way that will also help
with the adaptation of my sessions.

  • 1. Unit 27 Task 3 Week 1-4 and Review 1 Harleigh Williams
  • 2. Week 1/4 Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork Date: 16/01 Date: 16/01 Time: 2 o clock for about half an hour. Time: 2 o clock for about half an hour. Venue: The field outside Worthing college. Venue: The field outside Worthing college. Equipment: For the reaction drill used the following equipment; Cones, stopwatch and football. Equipment: For the footwork drill I used the following equipment; cones, stopwatch and football. Weather: It was really cold on Friday and the sky seemed quite grey so no doubt it will be expected to rain. The field was completely suitable to use. Weather: It is still really cold and it started to spit a bit but this did not affect the pitch or the test itself and therefore we carried on as normal. Coaches Review: ‘It is great to see Harry taking this all in his stride. I like to see my squad being challenged. He seemed very attentive and really up for improving, this was rewarding for me to watch’ Coaches Review: ‘Although he has a long way to go, I definitely think he will improve vastly as a striker. I’m hoping that this will make my decision as a coach easier for trials . If he improved his footwork, I’m excited for the future.’ Athlete Feedback / Questions: Am I doing it right? What is my time? Any better? ‘Well, this is much harder than I thought it was going to be but a positive feeling as I hope to see improvement.’ Athlete Feedback / Questions: Did I improve on the last result I got? ‘I definitely think this is helping me improve, I just need to gain a bit more confidence in myself.’ Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: Yes, Harry was very attentive and quick to pick things up. I definitely see progress being made. Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: Harry’s hard work carried on through with this improvement priority and he is really dedicated to improving. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? If No Describe: I definitely feel that the next session should be more advanced. I guess that I had underestimated Harry’s ability to start with and therefore I will be sure to create more tasks that suit his ability. More progression is definitely needed. He needs to be challenged in a specific way and I will look to do this by creating a progression plan. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? If No Describe: More progression I feel is needed, however he does seem to struggle with footwork more than he does reaction time. Therefore, I shall see how the next session goes and see how if he is at just at the right level or if I need to create something more innovative. I don’t want him to focus on speed, it is all about the accuracy that will benefit him in a game scenario. Was Contingency Needed? So far this being one of a few sessions that we have had, contingency does not seem necessary. Was Contingency Needed? Harry did seem to tire towards the end but I think with his coach Dave watching, he doesn’t seem necessary at this stage.
  • 3. Week 2/4 Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork Date: 1/2/15 Date: 2/2/15 Time: 4.00 till 4.30 Time: 2.00 till 3.00 Venue: The field outside Worthing college. Venue: The field outside Worthing College. Equipment: Football, Tennis ball, cones and stopwatch. Equipment: Cones and stopwatch. Weather: Very cold and the field was a bit icy but we managed to carry on as normal. However we did keep this session short. Weather: Still very cold weather but again nothing that affected our ability to work on the field. Coaches Review: Dave seems pleased so far with my efforts to keep each session new and creative. He also seems satisfied with how Harry is improving. Coaches Review: Dave has been really helpful with aiding me in the different drills and suggesting new ones for my improvement priorities. I will probably revise some weeks in my plan as I go along. Athlete Feedback / Questions: How will this improve my reaction time as a striker? Harry is very keen and asks a lot of questions which also helps me in the understanding of the drills and seeing how he improves as a player. Athlete Feedback / Questions: Harry really liked the dice drill as it was different and not too difficult which also made him enjoy it that little bit more. But due to how easy it was I may think again about repeating it in the following weeks or maybe pairing it up with another drill. Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: I chose a different exercise to week 1 so I haven’t seen any vast improvements with one exercise, but he is definitely improving as a whole. Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: Again I will be improving the first exercise in week 1 on week 3 so no drastic improvements yet but I definitely feel there will be with time and practice. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? I do not think the progression plan is necessary as this stage because it is still early in the eight week plan and he needs to get to grips with the exercises a bit more. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? Again no progression plan needed just yet but he does have the potential later on in the week for things to be more challenging. Was Contingency Needed? If Yes Describe: No back up plan needed this week. Was Contingency Needed? If Yes Describe: No back up plan needed this week, but if the weather continues I may need to bring our sessions inside.
  • 4. Week 3/4 Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork Date: 5/02/15 Date: 6/02/15 Time: 2.30 till 3 Time: 4 till 4.30 Venue: The field outside Worthing College. Venue: The field outside Worthing College Equipment: Cones, football and stopwatch. Equipment: Cones and stopwatch. Weather: The weather is still very cold but this time the field is probably getting a bit too hard for us to work on. I worry that if we carry on Harry’s studs might get stuck and I don’t want to cause him an ankle injury. Weather: The field wasn’t that much better on the Friday so I will arrange for us to do the drills inside from now on. Coaches Review: Dave seemed happy that Harry improved his score and suggested the move indoors as well because the weather was getting quite unbearable to stand in and watch. Coaches Review: Dave did seem a bit concerned also with Harry’s feedback about the footwork drill so I will definitely revise this area and make improvements. Although, Dave did seem pleased with his progress. Athlete Feedback / Questions: ‘It felt a lot harder this time.’ Although Harry seemed to tire quicker I definitely noticed an improvement with his reaction time. So whether or not the conditions effected him or he was just better with his technique; him tiring easy did not affect the end result. Athlete Feedback / Questions: ‘I think that this could be made harder. It seems quite simple.’ I agree with Harry on this as the footwork drills I have chosen are quite easy for Harry’s level of performance. I will work on the progression for next week. Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: There has definitely been progress in the cone agility drill with Harry compared to Week 1. He really has improved his time that I have been recording. He also seems a lot more confident doing them. Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: The same goes for the stance and start drill, he really has come into his own with these drills and a vast improvement has been made. I am feeling very positive about the next couple of weeks. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? Due to Harry’s progress so far I will definitely be revising my plan and maybe adding in some of Dave’s ideas. I will have to either make the drills harder or increase the frequency and/or the intensity. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? If No Describe: Harry is really making progress so I will be re-thinking some of my strategies . But in terms of footwork I will probably increase the intensity and frequency in some areas as most of the drills are quite basic anyway. Was Contingency Needed? For next week I am going to definitely have to arrange for it to be inside as it is just too cold for us to work well together outside. Was Contingency Needed? For next week I am going to definitely have to arrange for it to be inside as it is just too cold for us to work well together outside.
  • 5. Week 4/4 Improvement Priority 1: Reaction time Improvement Priority 2: Footwork Date: 12/02/15 Date: 13/02/15 Time: 2 till 2.30 Time: 3 till 3.30 Venue: Worthing college gym Venue: Worthing college gym Equipment: Football, stopwatch and tennis ball. Equipment: Speed ladder, football, Bosu Ball and stopwatch. Weather: Not necessary as the training took place inside. Weather: Not necessary as the training took place inside. Coaches Review: Dave thought that Harry seemed to work better in an inside environment which really focused on his skills to react quickly to the ball dropping. Dave also thought that it really did seem to tire him out which showed he was putting all of his effort into it which was great to see. Coaches Review: Dave also thought that this was a good exercise to do inside as it really took a lot of thought to get each station correct. Dave also said that it looked like Harry was enjoying himself which always helped with his ability to complete the tasks. Athlete Feedback / Questions: Harry seemed to prefer it inside after the session finished, his feedback was very positive and he was looking forward to repeating it in the upcoming weeks. Athlete Feedback / Questions: Harry was much happier with this exercise as he thought it challenged him more which he felt he was lacking in the previous weeks. So it was great to hear positive feedback from the basic tasks I originally set. Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: Progress is going really well at the mid point. I am pleased to see him improving each week and hopefully the mid point testing will really show that he has made a vast improvement in this area of football. Is Progress As Expected? If No Describe: I am hoping to see real improvements next week as I have increased aspects such as; intensity, frequency etc. I am really looking to see him challenged which will hopefully lead to vast improvements in this particular traits. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? I think that Harry is being challenged enough with reaction time at the moment as it is a lot of cardiovascular work. However, a progression plan will definitely be needed for the footwork drills. Are the Next Session Overload and Progression Plans Appropriate? Yes I have been able to revise the plan in order to challenge Harry more with basic drills for footwork. Hopefully by adapting the drills he will feel more tested with this progression plan. Was Contingency Needed? Yes contingency was needed as I had to adapt the plan in able to complete it inside. So I had less room to work in. Was Contingency Needed? Yes contingency was needed because I had to adapt the plan for us to be able to complete the drill inside the college gym.
  • 6. I am very pleased that the eight week plan seems to be paying off. He was definitely more alert and focused.
  • 7. Week 4 Review Testing Excellence Trait – Weakness 2/2 Trait: Footwork Test Name: The Star test Standardised Test: Yes Normative Data: Yes If Not A Standardised Test Detail Method Here: • This bespoke test develops change of direction and running speed for a football player. Mark out a five-yard box with a centre cone in the middle of the box. Place a speed ladder two yards outside the box that will serve as the finishing point. The player begins on the centre cone and runs out to touch all four corner cones, returning to the centre cone each time. Next the player runs out to the speed ladder and sprints through the ladder. Full recovery between efforts, 5 minute rest minimum in between. Test Result 1: 29.03 Test Result 1 Rating: Poor Test Result 2: 16.21 Test Result 2 Rating: Average Test Result 3: 8.51 Test Result 3 Rating: Advanced Best Result: 8.51 seconds was the best result at an advanced level. This is a slight improvement from the previous testing but at least there is an improvement. The original result was quite good anyway so it is definitely a positive to improve by a little bit. Best Result Rating: Advanced: 10 seconds and below.
  • 8. Describe whether the tests show that progress is being made as planned? • The footwork test definitely showed that an improvement had been made but not as much as the reaction time test. This could be because the footwork drills are quite basic so for week 5 I am working on progression plans to really challenge him as a striker. Considering the circumstances of my efforts to create the plan, progress is definitely being made at a good rate in my opinion. Dave thinks that there could definitely be some more improvement by the end of the plan, but for now I think that the progress that has been made so far is definitely a positive. His times definitely improved with every test which was great to see and Harry seems to be improving as a striker, which is also great to witness from the drills that have been given to him so far in the eight week plan.
  • 9. Does the mid point review show that weeks 5-8 need to be adapted? Describe How you will adapt your sessions? • The mid point review has definitely flagged up improvements that need to be made in terms of progression in weeks 5-8. I will adapt my sessions by increasing the intensity and the frequency of the footwork drills in particular. If this is still seen to be quite relaxed for Harry then I will also look in to increasing the time that he completes the drills in. These will all be increased, not at the same time, but as the weeks go on I will look at these areas for making the improvements. I feel that this will challenge Harry with the basic guideline drills that I have set out. I will also look for feedback from Harry himself and see if he has any suggestions in a way that will also help with the adaptation of my sessions.
