3. Coaching Log – Athlete Observation
Date/Location 16/12/14 Worthing college
Strengths The football players work really hard in training so it made my life much
easier when observing Harry because I could really look at his full potential
as a striker and analyse him. The players didn’t mind me watching which
was great because it meant that Harry didn’t change the way he played on
the pitch. It was easy for me to go and watch Harry train because they
were at college, it wasn’t an inconvenience to me because I was at college
anyway for my lessons. This also meant I could watch them more than
once and it was on site.
Improvement
Areas
I did have to watch some of Harry training and playing a game online
because I was quite busy and could not attend all of his training sessions.
This could have hindered my opinion on his ability to play because it was
not in person. There was also no date on when they played that particular
game therefore Harry could have improved as a striker since the footage
that I watched.
Points for future
discussion
Watch more time of Harry actually playing in a game situation as opposed
to training;
Possible actions
arising
If I was to observe the player again I would possibly bring someone with
me so I could get a second opinion, this would not only help me analyse
the player but it would have made it easier to take notes instead of missing
the players play.
4. Coaching Log – Athlete Profiling Meeting
Date 16/12/14
Location Worthing college
Discussion
points
API and ASA of Harry; What do you rate yourself as a player for different traits,
personal profile-details i.e. weight, height etc
Concerns It was quite a struggle to find a time for Harry and I to meet as we didn’t know
each other and we are both college students which made it hard to find a time
where we were both free. I was also taking time out of his day to meet him
which is always hard when I’m sure he has a lot of college work to do. This also
made it uncomfortable as he didn’t really seem that interested in the meeting.
Due to his commitments I did also have to email him a lot which could have
restricted opportunities to ask him questions.
Points for
future
discussion
What could Dave do to improve training; what do you do to improve as a
player; what do you feel like you could improve on to be a better player.
Possible
actions
arising
If I was to do this process again I would probably pick a player that I knew so
that it wasn’t awkward at meetings and I knew a bit more about the level that
they play at. However, if I was to meet Harry again I would maybe suggest more
meetings than we had so I got to know more about him as a player then only
really going by the coach meetings. I would also maybe choose a different sport
but made sure I researched about it before choosing a player.
5. Coaching Log – Coach Profile Meeting
Date 16/12/14
Location Worthing college
Discussion
points
Harry’s traits; his level of performance; his strengths and weaknesses; Harry’s
statistics as a striker.
Concerns It was quite difficult to find the time to meet with Dave as he is a teacher at
the college and obviously the coach of a successful football team. This made it
difficult for me to hit deadlines on time with enough time to complete the
work to my best ability. Dave was as flexible as possible for me but it made it
very hard to arrange difference times for meetings. Also, because of his
commitments the meetings did seem a bit rushed and I would have liked to
cover more in one meeting than having various different ones.
Points for
future
discussion
How the coach goes about improving traits; coaches perceived importance of
the traits; How do you better yourself as a coach;
Possible
actions
arising
If I was to have the meeting again, I would write questions down before
attending the meeting so that I made sure I covered every aspect instead of
being distracted and not covering everything and therefore having to result to
emails. I would also improve my knowledge on the traits relating specifically to
football/Strikers, so I knew why they needed to have that particular trait.
