QUESTION THREE
1. How does your
media product
represent particular
social groups?
Hannah Austin, AS Media
2. LauraLaura is the first character that the audience is introduced to. We
wanted to really emphasize the fact that Laura is just a stereotypical
teenage girl throughout the opening of our product – we tried to
achieve this by dressing her in bright coloured clothes (opposed to the
chasers dark black clothing) and makeup etc. We wanted the audience
to really be able to relate and sympathize with Laura when they realize
what happens to her.
What she
was
wearing…
3. HER ROLE IN THE
PRODUCT
We wanted Laura to really reflect this idea of the stereotypical
“weak” female which is often featured in films. She comes
across as very venerable and powerless to the audience and
we just wanted to highlight the fact that she is just a normal
teenage girl.
We also stereotypically decided to make the victim a girl, this
means that it conforms to normal conventions but also from
our feedback we discovered that most people prefer it being a
woman as the victim, so we listened to that and adapted our
ideas around it.
4. We represented Laura as middle class throughout the
entirety of our clip, as you can see quite clearly Laura is
not at all deprived in any way of any materialistic
luxuries – the clip features many items of technology
and it is also very obvious that Laura has a family home
to come to which is well kept – suggesting that she still
lives with her parents and also suggesting that she is
most probably still quite young. We wanted Laura to be
middle class as we thought it would add a little more
depth to the clip as a whole and it would help spark
more questions within the audience

5. THE
CHASER
We wanted it to appear obvious immediately
that the chaser was the antagonist within our
product, so we dressed her in contrasting
clothes to Laura – we ensured that she
dressed head to toe in black which would
suggest to the audience that she’s bad and
dangerous. She represents the anti-
stereotypical antagonist.
WHAT SHE WAS
WEARING…
6. The chaser was typically supposed to be a
male, and we had planned for it to be a
male throughout the whole ideas process
however when it came to actually filming
on the day we weren’t able to find a male
who was available to be in our film – so we
decided to have Scarlett featured in our film
instead. As it turns out, we were actually
glad that Scarlett did step in because I felt
that it added an element of uniqueness to
our film having the female as the
antagonist. It is not often that you see a
women holding so much power and
violence (especially as she has a knife as a
weapon) within a film and therefor we felt
that it made our product stand out and look
different.
HER ROLE IN
THE FILM
7. As you can see in the clip, compared to Laura – the
chaser doesn’t have a lot. We wanted the audience to
be aware of this, because we wanted the chaser to be
seen as Working Class – she has nothing but a knife
and clothes, which could suggest she comes from a
troubled background and could even be a little
mentally disturbed. We felt that by making her
working class it could make her appear to just be
angry at the fact that Laura has a lot when she has so
little.
