This document summarizes how various social groups are represented in the media product. Lucy Jones, the protagonist, is portrayed as a young woman to attract a younger, female audience. Stereotypical high angle shots are used to portray women as weaker. Lucy's therapist Sophia subverts stereotypes by being an intelligent, authoritative woman. Lucy's father David is implied to be an alcoholic working-class man who kills Lucy's mother, making him a terrible father figure. Only Lucy's mother Louise is heard screaming, portraying her as weak. David is compared to the character Jack from The Shining, both resorting to violence against their families due to alcohol and mental instability.

2. Lucy Jones
Our protagonist, Lucy Jones, is a young
woman, this is to attract the younger,
female audience.
Women are stereotypically the weaker sex, so we used high angle shots to portray this.
We also played on the idea of her being a psychotic woman, which is also seen quite a lot
in the media. This is exaggerated when she is walking down the corridor and the voices in
her head can be heard.
It is implied to the audience that Lucy is a teenager, this is done through her choice of
clothes (casual clothing, jumper and leggings). It’s also implied when
she goes to college the next day, the corridor
clearly signifies a learning area. Also, her college
badge is visible. We wanted her to be a younger
character to reinforce how she has defined who she is
at such a young age.

3. Sophia Hunter
Lucy’s therapist, Sophia subverts stereotypes of women
by her being an intelligent and authoritative character
and offers her help to Lucy. She is sometimes
sympathetic to Lucy and has understanding for her, this
allows the female audience to relate to her as women are
portrayed as being sympathetic to others.
Sophia’s costume makes her look
professional, she is also an organised
character this is portrayed through the
files being all ready on her desk.
She has an important job, this could
have been helped by what ethnicity
she is, as white British tend to have a
higher job role.

4. Lucy’s parents
Lucy’s father appears to the audience as
being quite a terrible father, this is shown
when it’s implied that he killed his wife.
It is suggested that David (Lucy’s father) is an
alcoholic, this is because he is laid out on the
floor with an empty beer bottle in his hand. It
is signified that him being an alcoholic is the
reason why he kills Louise (Lucy’s mother),
therefore Lucy kills him.
David is the only parent that is shown on screen.
It is implied that he working class, this is shown
through the choice of clothing; tracksuit bottoms
and a loose polo T-shirt.
However, we hear Louise in one of the
flashbacks. We only hear her screaming, this
suggests that she is much weaker and could be
described as being a “pathetic” character.

5. The Shining-Jack Torrance
We compared the character David to Jack
Torrance (The Shining) as he reverts to
alcohol and attempts to kill his wife and
child, implying that he has the same
intentions as David
He is also of working class as he works as
a janitor at a hospital. However, it is “cabin
fever” that drives him to kill his family, this
contrasts with our film as David kill his
wife through drunken acts of violence.
