2009 Horizon Report
 Time-to-Adoption Horizon: One Year or Less

The idea of a single portable device that can make phone calls,
take pictures, record audio and video, store data, music, and
movies, and interact with the Internet — all of it — has
become so interwoven into our lifestyles that it is now
surprising to learn that someone does not carry one.

Pew/Internet Report
 The mobile device will be the primary connection
tool to the internet for most people in the world in
    2020.
 Voice recognition and touch user-interfaces with
the internet will be more prevalent and accepted
    by 2020.
 The consensus is that mobile devices will continue
to grow in impact because people need to be
    connected, wherever they are.

http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/270/report_display.asp
Pew: Networked Families
 89% of married-with-children households own
multiple cell phones, and nearly half (47%)
own three or more mobile devices.
 57% of these children (aged 7-17) have their
  own cell phone.
 25% of survey respondents feel that their
family today is now closer than their family
when they were growing up thanks to the use
of the internet and cell phones.

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/998/networked-families
United Nations Telecom Agency
 In 2000, only 12 per cent of the global
    population had a mobile phone.
 The number of mobile phone users will
overtake the number of people who don't
have a cellphone this year for the first time.
 (that was in early 2008)

Where are we headed?
Where are we headed?
 Google Android
 OpenMoko
 100% saturation within the next 5 years.
The Distraction Dilemma
 How can we teach appropriate use of
cell phones, if we are unwilling to use
  them at all?
 Set forth guidelines and stand by them.
 Encourage and promote positive use of
new technology instead of keeping it all
  a mystery.
Final Thoughts
 Learning is a deeply personal act that is facilitated
when learning experiences are relevant, reliable, and
  engaging.
 Different kinds of learning demand appropriate
  strategies, tools, and resources.
 Technology in and of itself may not guarantee better
  learning.
 The better the experience and the more intentional the
results, the greater is the likelihood that learning will
  occur.

Editor's Notes

  1. Ask everyone who has a cellphone available to go ahead and get it out and raise it up, take a picture of group. While e-mailing, ask for a raise of hands for how many have text messaging, how many have a smartphone, and how many have a cellphone at all?
