2. Class
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups
The artists featured in my magazine and the target audience of my magazine are both teenagers
and people in their early twenties so they will generally be working class which will allow my
audience to relate to the magazine and further enforce their own social identity through the things
they buy and wear. As you can see from the image on the left of the page I have dressed one of
the artists featured in my magazine in punk rock genre clothing which is generally linked to the
working class, this gives the audience someone they can aspire to be like without having to have a
large disposable income, and sets a role model for the female audience because it shows that they
can be like their favourite celebrities without having to having to be rich and famous.
Furthermore all of the artists featured in my magazine are from the city of York which is where my
music magazine is generally based. York is a working class city and has a large market for people
who follow the rock genre.
3. Age
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups
The mean age of the artists featured in my music magazine is 18, which reflects the
ages of the largest market demographic for music sales in the UK. My music magazine
represents genres within the teenage modern culture, this varies primarily between rock
and punk which are renown for their rebellion to conform to the general rules of society
and is done through the use of colours and photographic mise en scene. Furthermore a
large market demographic is open to this music magazine because there are countless
rock and punk festivals and also has iconic fashion trends which enforces the
stereotypical fashion, music and celebrity influenced teenage society.
4. Gender
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups
In the picture above the female artist featured in my music magazine is shown as being
thin with long blonde hair and wearing a lot of glamour make up, this enforces the
stereotypical idea of the model woman and can be seen on almost any music magazine.
The use of this photograph on my magazine cover represents to its audience that being
young, thin and attractive makes you successful and gives them something/someone to
look up to and aspire to be like. This also suggests that women should try hard to look
sexually appealing to men this can be seen with the exposure of her legs, chest, arms
and her stance and eye contact with the audience could be seen as provocative. This
gives the audience the idea that women must conform to the way society portrays them.
On the other hand males models in the magazine are represented with casual clothing.
This suggests that the male in the picture does not have to impress the female audience
by looking seductive.
5. Ethnicity
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups
In my magazine I have only represented white, British artists this is because my
magazine is primarily of the punk-rock genre which is renown for being very British and
is made up of mainly white artists as opposed to Black or Asian artists. This could be
more appealing to white-British people because the majority of people in Britain are
white.
The production of my magazine was subject to circumstance because It was produced in
a white majority by coincidence
