Question 2 - How does your media
product represent particular social
             groups?

           Katherine Clark
What are social groups?
    People who share common
interests, hobbies, characteristics
         and personalities.
  Ethnicity, religion, race, social
 class and a person’s background
  culture can all influence what
    social groups they fall into.
 Values and representations also
   help create socials group for
          people to be in.
Social Groups Presented Through
   Other Magazine Front Covers
This magazine represents heavy rock music and the rock/heavy
metal music social groups. It negatively represents the
intended social group because it looks frightening, gory and
scary to viewers. Not every person who enjoy rock music
would enjoy looking at the front cover on the
magazine, although it clearly shows what type of music is
included inside and what the magazine is about.

This magazine represents vintage music from older
generations and the vintage/indie music social groups. It
positvely represents the intended social group and it looks
respectful and enjoyable and is easy to understand what
time of music is included inside and what the magazine is
                           about.

  • I used images of all different female’s
because i thought the female’s fashion sense
and music would attract females as well as
males because the males would be attracted
to them as they are all attractive females. I
could improve my magazine by adding a few
pictures of males to make it more equal to
                  both sexes.
My Front Cover
I have put the model in the centre third of the page to make her
stand out more and look more important. I made her pose in a
fashion sense pose with her hand on her hip to show she is
famous and glamorous. I also dressed her in a seductive short
red dress with two small lead shape cut outs on the chest, she
looks sexy, glamorous and like a celebrity, this was the effect I
had planned. The mise-en-scene of the front cover communicates
that she is in a popular and well known category and would be
classed as fashionable in fashion sense, she also looks like she is
represented as a pop singing in social groups. My front cover
represents its target audience as it is equal sex, but mainly aimed
at females, young teenagers up to 40 year olds may be interested
in the magazine and people interested in POP/New music. The
representation this front cover offers supports dominant ideas
about the social group who read this magazine although I haven’t
been stereotypical to the genre of magazine. I could have made it
more inclusive by having a model from a non white race on the
                           front cover as well.
My Volunteer Speakers
I have interviewed a variety of 6 different people
aged between 15-45 to see if they understood
what the target audience for my magazine is. I
also made sure I equally interviewed the
           amount of males and females.
I interviewed 16,17 and 45 year old females and
             15,16, 24 year old males.
