Risk assessment
1. Risk Assessment For Obsidian
Risk Identified Shooting
Location
Responsibility Overcoming or Preventing risk
Weather Outdoors N/A The weather needs to be
checked a couple of days in
advance so that we know when
we can ask everyone to be at the
shoot location. We will also need
to go outside and check how
much wind there is. As if the
wind is two strong the sound
would be interfered with, this can
be avoided at checking how
windy it is meant to be. We will
also check the weather forecast
throughout the shoot to make
sure we have no surprise
weather that could ruin the
equipment. Different weather
such as rainy will be needed for
our film as rain is a convention of
noir, so we would need to plan
ahead for the rain.
Illness/injury All Georgia/Beth/Actors If an actor was to become ill we
would make sure that we have a
backup actor. Unless we need
that specific actor for a scene to
finish it we would need to
reschedule the filming. In case
me or Beth become ill at
separate times, the other person
would have to do all the filming
on there own. If we were both ill
at the same time we would need
to reschedule the full shoot. If
there was an injury we would
have on us a first aid kit to deal
with the injury.
2. Unavailable actors
or directors.
All Beth/Georgia/Actors The actors must be reliable to
show up to the shoot, and not let
us down with short notice. Those
doing this will set us back with
filming time as we would have to
recast. To solve this problem we
must make sure that we ask
actors that we know are reliable
to show up. Another problem
could be that there are actors
which could end up having
clashes with the filming times. To
overcome this we will keep
regular contact with the actors
and remind them in advance
when the shoot is, and what time
they need to be there. As there
are two directors me and Beth
we could have clashing times to
film, and may need the camera
for different locations. This would
mean that only one of us would
be able to film the scene at once.
To avoid an over clash we will
keep verbal contact and we will
tell each other when we need the
camera.
Formatting
malfunction or
memory card full.
All Beth/Georgia To make sure that the memory
card is not full up we will check
before the shoot that the card is
empty. We will also check by
filming for a shot amount of time
that the footage does save to the
card. We will need to have a
separate card to make sure that
is the first one malfunction we
can switch it and carry on with
the shoot.
Low Battery All Beth/Georgia During the shoot there may be a
case when the batters become
low, if this was to happen we
would need to ask permission to
plug the charger in a socket
available. To avoid this from
happening in the first place we
will make sure that the camera is
charged the night before the
shoot, and directly after the
shoot as well. We will carry the
charger at all times in case of an
emergency.
Broken equipment All Beth/Georgia As the equipment such as the
tripod will be from the college,
we must check when we first
3. receive the camera that it is fully
functional. Once we have the
equipment we must make sure
nothing ends up broke, as we
would then need to replace the
equipment. If equipment was
broke we would need to cancel
the shoot and reschedule to a
day which we can get the new
equipment.
Broken
props/costumes
All Beth/Georgia/Actors During the filming if a prop
breaks we must have a
replacement this will make sure
the shoot is not ruined. If there is
no other prop available we would
need to reschedule the shoot at
a time when we have a new prop
or have fixed the broken one. In
case of a costume breaking we
will bring to the shoot a sewing
kit, for minor repairs to
costumes. For a broken costume
that is not fixable we would need
to make sure that we had a
replacement or we would have to
reschedule the shoot to a day
that we had a new costume.
Unable to get
costumes/props on
time
All Georgia/Beth To avoid the possibility of not
getting the props or costumes on
time, we will make sure that we
check what costumes we need a
week before the shoot. This will
make sure we have enough time
to acquire the props and
costumes. We will also give the
actors there costumes to make
sure they can wear them for the
shoot. If the actor is likely to
forget the prop or costume we
will keep responsibility of them.
Everything need for the shoot
must be doubled checked that
we have, otherwise we would
need to reschedule the shoot.
Trip Hazards Outside Beth/Georgia Outside where we are filming
there could be trip hazards such
as broken glass or bins in the
way of filming. We will need to
make sure the area is safe for us
to work in and its safe for the
actors.
Lighting All Beth/Georgia When we arrive at our location
we must make sure the lighting
is right, as it is a horror film too
4. much light will not fit the
conventions of the film. However
we could shoot the scene with
bright light and we may be able
to edit the lighting.
Unavailable
location
All Beth/Georgia The location may be public so
we would not have to check that
the location is available it always
will be. But just in case we will go
down the day before and check
that nothing has been blocked
off.
Location Safety All Georgia/Beth We will visit the filming placed
before hand to make sure that
they are safe locations to film at.
Once we know they are safe we
will shoot there, but again on the
filming day will assess the
location just to make sure there
will be no threat to us or the
actors.
Public interference Outdoors Beth/Georgia The public will be around when
we are filming at certain
locations, to make sure we are
all safe we will need to assess
the filming location, This will
entail looking for people who way
want to steal the equipment. This
may seem a judgmental thing to
do, but as the equipment is not
ours we have to take extra
caution to make sure nothing
happens to is. If someone was to
try and steal the equipment this
may injure us in the process
which we cannot allow to
happen. Some of the public may
not want to be shown or caught
on camera so we would need to
stop filming and respect the
public. We would then need to
reschedule the shoot possibly to
a less busy day.
Traffic Outdoors
(To film
location
e.g.
Hartlepool)
Beth/Georgia When we are filming near a road
we will need to make sure that
we are safe from not getting
injured. We will also have to
make sure the actors do not get
to close to the road. The actor
could get carried away with
acting and not notice they are
too close to the road, so we will
have to watch them to make sure
they are safe. The traffic could
5. also be a problem when trying to
get to a location. To deal with
this problem we will make sure
that us and the actors set off
early to avoid traffic.
Software Post
production
editing
suite
Georgia/Beth The software may be liable to
crash when we are editing our
final cut, so one of us will save
the work at 10 minute intervals to
make sure no editing or work is
lost. It may crash because of
how much filming is being edited
all at once.
Film not following
conventions
N/A Beth/Georgia We will think about the
conventions of horror throughout
the filming process. As we
already have an understanding
about the conventions this will
not be a completely difficult task.
Making sure we have made the
film creative but not too creative
that the audience cannot follow,
will be an easy task as we have
planned it before hand, we must
make sure the balance is right.
Film not to the top
standards
N/A Beth/Georgia
Budget Issues N/A Georgia/Beth/Actor As this is low budget film money
may become hard to find. This
would mean that props and
costumes may not be exactly
what we wanted them to look
like. We would have to uses
props and costumes more than
once, or props and costumes
that are available. Travelling to
filming locations may cause a
problem, as there are many
actors involved in the same
scenes. This could be solved by
paying for the actors travelling
expense to the location, or
offering lifts to the locations.
