2. A publisher is a company or person that prepares and issues books, journals, magazines,
or music for sale. It is part of the distribution process.
Two of the biggest Publishers for the UK are IPC media and Bauer media.
IPC Media distributes its products online and in magazine form along with making them
available on tablets holding events to promote them. This means their products are
largely distributed. This could be good for my magazine as it will help keep up with the
web 2.0 generation and make my magazine more accessible. They also have a very large
customer base as their website say “we engage with 26m UK adults - almost two thirds
of UK women and 42% of UK men.”
On the other hand Bauer Media group work in TV and Radio along with magazines and
have a equally as large customer base as their website says “The Group is a worldwide
media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries” this may lead to an even
larger distribution for unorthodox. Bauer also have experience in publishing for my
genre of magazine.
3. The Genre of my magazine is alternative and pop . This will help fill gap in market
in terms of music magazine as my survey said that Alternative music was one of the
most popular genres but there were no magazines suited to this genre.
In terms of format my magazine would be most suited to a company like IPC media
as they own NME which is a similar magazine to Unorthodox (they also publish
music magazine uncut). However, in terms of genre and content it is most suited to
Bauer media group as they own magazines such as Q which features a mixture of
genres like alternative and pop (they also publish mojo). This is also better in terms
of the target audience.
For my market research results I found that people wanted to read music
magazines but they weren’t always available in the right genre. I also found that
they listen to music through different devices . This may mean that they will want
to read their music magazine on different devices as well (i.e. – Phone, iPod,
laptop, ETC… Cross media conversance). Meaning that IPC would be better as they
work more on making digital magazines.
4. Although both publishers provide equally as important points I think that Bauer
media group is best suited to my magazine as they have already successfully
published a magazine of a similar genre and have a similar target audience.
