Introduction
This is a report on a site visit to a construction site incorporating
the objectives of the site visit, the introduction of the site and
technical observations made on site including the learning
outcomes of the site visit.
The site visit is organized by our lecturers, Ms Ang, Ms Aishah
and Ms Azrina. We were divided into 2 groups, my group consists
of 23 members. The site visited is at SOHO in Bandar Sunway
beside Taylors University on Friday, 21st December 2014.
Objectives of the Assignment
To prepare us for our future career as a Quantity Surveyor
To give us exposure to construction site
To expand our knowledge of construction site
To understand the method and process of construction in
accordance to the sequence of work on site
To recognize and understand the building materials used for
construction
To give awareness and importance of safety in the
construction site
To understand the importance of teamwork and
communication skills while working together on the site

Content and Technical Observation
The site visit was held on Friday, 21st
December 2014. The
location was at SOHO in Bandar Sunway near Taylors University.
Before that, Ms Ang, Ms Aishah and Ms Azrina briefed us about
the safety precautions and preparation for the site visit. Primary,
safety comes first, we have to prepare a safety helmet for head
protection in case of accidents such as dropping objects. We
were told to be always aware of our footsteps to avoid slipping or
fall into a hole. We were also required to wear bright long sleeves
shirt to avoid heat and sunlight. If we were hurt by rusty nails, a
tetanus shot is needed to prevent infection.
On the day of visit, some of us car pool or walked to the site
because it is very near to the campus. We were gathered at the
site at 9.45am and waited the lecturers and the safety officer to
organize the visit for us.
We were gathered by the safety officer to brief us about safety
precautions. We began our visit at 10am, everyone began to wear
their helmets and take pictures using phones and cameras. We
saw a few scaffolds attached to the building, those were
independent scaffolds because it is more easier to move, it was
used for temporary ladders and work place.
We went to the basement parking, it has cement package, PVC
pipes, reinforcement bars along the place. We saw how the
process of columns and beams were construct, it requires more
work and time than we imagine.

We were told that the formwork used was steel and timber. Steel
formworks are stronger and can be reuse many times, however it
is very heavy and requires more labour work. Timber formwork is
cheaper and lighter to carry so it get the small works done faster,
but it cannot be used many times.
The concrete used for the building was mostly grade 40, it is a
very strong concrete that has more aggregate, it does not crack
easily and can sustain more heavy loads. However, I would
recommend grade 30 for concrete works because the buildings
does not require to sustain heavy loads, it is also strong and
saves a lot of cost.
Our visit lasted one hour until 11am, it was a very fun experience
and we gained a lot of knowledge about construction of a building,
what does it requires and what is the process. We hope that we
could do another site visit in the future to gain new knowledge and
new technology used for construction.

Learning Outcomes
The site visit was a great experience for all of us, we have
gained a lot of knowledge about construction and understand
more of what we studied in class.
From the beginning of the site, we were told to always keep
our safety helmets on because safety always comes first, there
are many warning sign and rules along the site, heavy penalty
would be used if fail to follow instructions.
This site visit gives us a clearer understanding of a building
structure, such as the work and design of scaffolding,
reinforcement bars, concrete bars, formwork, columns, beams
and many others that we have learned in the construction
technology and building materials.
Besides that, we now know how difficult or complicated to
construct a building. It requires a lot of time, skills and teamwork
in order to finish it, workers also have to experience difficulties like
working under hot sun and may delay works on heavy rains.
