The Contributions of Olivia Judson
Olivia Judson, an evolutionary biologist with a doctorate in biological sciences and the author of
The Definitive Guide to the Evolutionary Biology of Sex: Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation
tells of her in–depth research on procreation to educate others on the sex life of all creation while
incorporating the organismsf scientific names. Each chapter of the book begins with letters
containing questions from an animal, amphibian, bug, arachnid, or other organism that, at times,
must be put under a magnifying glass to see. The questions themselves are under three different
categories. These categories are as follows: gPart One: Let Slip the Whores of War!h gPart
Two: The Evolution of Depravityh gPart Three: Are Men Necessary? Usually, but Not
Always.h
Each category of the book is filled with questions that range from why some organisms find
copulation boring in their relationships to simple anatomical questions. Dr. Tatiana answers each of
the proposed questions with comparisons to other organisms that experience the same situations. By
doing this, she further provides readers with information on multiple organisms. Judson contributes
to onefs understanding of sex among different organisms in that she makes difficult concepts
simple to comprehend. Although she uses scientific terminology, she limits it so that anyone can
understand the technical information she shares. Judson also describes the types of environments in
which each species and

The Characteristics Of The Great Horned Owls
What do you think of when you hear the word, "owl?" You might picture a barred owl with its
elegant white feathers and small beak. But what about its distant relative? The Great Horned owl
lives up to its name by its horned ears. This remarkable creature really stands out in the bird family
due to the lack of predators and how small and aggressive it is. The Great Horned Owl is one of
many Owls. Although there are many different species of owls, this one is unique. This particular
owl is small, has a different diet, is widely known, and is one of the more radical looking owls. The
Great Horned Owl is a beautiful, majestic type of bird. It's a smaller kind of owl, but it sure does
pack a punch. It's known for "its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow–eyed stare, and deep
hooting voice..."(Great Horned Owl.) Some wonder where this owl is found due to the fact the most
widely known is the barred owl. It's normally found all over the Arctic and South America. These
creatures are nocturnal so they would be easier to spot in the night time. All owls are known for how
aggressive and strong they are. Well, this one in particular lives up to the phrase, "tiny but mighty."
Their bodies average eighteen to twenty one inches. Averaging a wingspan of 3.3–4.8 feet. These
birds can weigh anywhere from two pounds to around 5.5 pounds. Although these birds are already
small in size, the females are slightly larger than the males. As like the rest of the owls, these are

The Fight Or Flight Instinct
The deaths have taken the place of reason in my mind; they have made the decision to leave Novi
Templi for me, and have murdered the voices of reason and common sense, and left only the
screaming voices of revenge in my tortured mind saying but one word: RUN. The journey to
Veteribus will be long. The voices tell me so, but they have been tortured by what my eyes have
seen throughout my long 17 years in this dreadful excuse of a country. So much so that nothing
remains of the original, innocent, and human thoughts of the babe I once was. The fight or flight
instinct is now my trained response. Always on guard, always alert. Is it possible that, rather this is
all real, I'm insane? Could it be that I've made a reality in my sick mind ... Show more content on

but I manage to keep my composure happy and professional. Sean pulls a small gun out of the bag
and proudly presents his findings with me. Further inside the bag are small pouches of food, a knife,
a compass, and water filter bags with matches. I nod my head in approval and proceed to show him
the few things that I have that might serve some purpose for our escape: a flashlight, a wrench, a

soldiers. My side starts to hurt after a few

The Hoggins Alternate Ending
The Hoggins were the kind very fond of adventures. They lived in a small town, called Leaz–vile, in
their miniature nest. Now, Chumper Hoggins was the very curious type of owl. He lived with his
mother, Anarople, and father, Gregriy. He had no siblings, but he really did wish he had a sister or
brother. This owl family was very different, they could turn into humans when they hit land. They
could also shoot fire from their talons. Aside from all that, there was a store not far from their little
nest.
"Wake up Chumper, we have to hurry and get to the store's sale before anyone else gets there,"
exclaimed Anarople.
"Really mom, it's 6 a.m.!" complained Chumper. "Yes of course we do, it's the one and only sale of
the year," said Anarople. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Nice job son!" said Anarople and Gregiry in unison. After they completed the task of killing Groug
the Goblin they set off in his lair to go find the wings. After of about two days of looking they came
across a very dark room in the bottom of the mountain. They investigated this cave and sure enough
about one hour later they came across the ancient golden and diamond wings of an owl. "Finally, we
found the wings after so much hard work!" exclaimed Chumper. "Yes we did, and you did a lot to
help," said Anarople.
After they found the wings they knew they needed to get them back to the bird as soon as possible.
They hurriedly made a run for it out of the mountain, just in case any Shelobs were leftover. They
jumped right back into owl form, then flew out of the small crack in the door. "I can't believe we just
achieved that goal!" said Gregiry. "I also can't believe that we are already on our way home!"
exclaimed Chumper.
They talked and talked for while until they noticed that they were flying over the ocean that Tider
had lived in. "Look, were already crossing the Sea of Rhun," said Chumper. "I know, I'm so excited
to be back in our homely nest," said

Spotted Owl Population Falling, Could go From Threatened to Endangered
Just about anyone who has heard about the plight of endangered species has heard of the spotted
owls, as they became one of the poster animals for it back in the 1990s when these birds were put on
the threatened species list during the adventure of the Timber Wars of the Northwest. The loggers
wanted to cut down trees where the spotted owls lived, and they couldn't due to the owls living in
them.
Now, decades later these iconic spotted owls are still in danger despite the efforts of the Endangered
Species Act and the feds may change their status from "threatened" to "endangered" to try to bring
up their population is the US. The announcement came by the US Fish and Wildlife ... Show more

Reports have put the population of the spotted owls at under 4,000 individuals, as of 2011. Studies
are usually done every five years by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to check on threatened
species.
One thought is to protect spotted owls by killing the barred owls in several areas to see if the spotted
owls will travel back to those habitats. This experiment will be conducted in Oregon and
Washington later this year, and is already being done on private land in California. The process is
expected to last three years to see what happens and if it helps bring up the population of the spotted
owls and get them to travel back to those areas where the barred owls are now living.
Even if the spotted owls go from the threatened moniker to the endangered status, it doesn't offer the
birds any more real protection or money, according to the officials. In some cases, the birds can even
still be killed by logging companies depending on the area to be cut, but this change in status could
make it harder for the logging companies to get a permit to kill spotted owls. In fact, in the past
there have been petitions to get the spotted owls totally removed from any protected list, but it was
found by the ESA to lack evidence to do

Abstract
The spotted owl was seen as a symbol of all things environmental during the late 1980's and early
1990's. The logging industry was well on its way to destroying most of the old growth forests of the
Pacific Northwest. Environmentalists swarmed the area, sabotaging logging efforts and calling ...

Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of
salmon streams nationwide, when it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole.
The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over the
past several decades. Recently, they have become more responsible about clear–cut logging.
Harvested forests are often replanted to provide for future wildlife habitat and logging efforts.
However, this doesn't help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of massive
trees and thick dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of jobs
have been lost. Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed.
So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists want
to protect this owl. How will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues that
arise out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient lumber. The loggers need their jobs. The
spotted owl needs a home.
One of the largest concerns, dealing with the spotted owl / forest industry debate, is the loss of jobs.
There were 21,000 jobs lost during the time that this debate took place (Ross, 1999). The amount of
job losses in the logging and milling industry at this time were not solely attributed to the spotted
owl controversy. The downward trend in the timber harvest

Analysis Of Indian Killer By Sherman Alexie
In Indian Killer by Sherman Alexie, gruesome events hint towards each main character being a
possible suspect. John Smith is the main character of the story that the readers know most about.
Sherman Alexie gives John a mental disability in order to give the readers a suspect of being the
killer. Reggie, Marie, Dr. Mather, and Jack Wilson are also main characters that can arguably be the
killer. Reggie and Marie are the Indian killers because of the various death threats they make
towards white men. Reggie refers to himself as an Indian. He is very intelligent but that's only
because of his father. Reggie's father is a rich white man and his mother is a poor Indian woman. His
father would physically beat him in order to ensure that Reggie would not turn into a rebellious or
dirty Indian. When he was young he preferred to be more white than Indian because he believed he
was successful when he was treated like other white people. With the belief that being half Indian
was bad, Reggie tried to hide his Indian culture. "I don't know. Don't care much, either" (96). When
asked about his father, Reggie would blow off the question or respond with a careless answer. His
father, being white, does not help Reggie's thoughts about white people.
Ironically , as Reggie gets older he decides to start learning more about the Indian culture. The
college class he takes at the University of Washington shows the readers how passionate he is about
being Indian. Reggie and his professor, Dr. Mather, start to become good friends even outside of
class. Dr. Mather is not an Indian but has a strong desire to be treated like one. Eventually, Dr.
Mather started telling lies and reggie found out. "He's a fucking liar" (Alexie 95). Reggie claims Dr.
Mather is a liar because he told Reggie he would burn the tapes of Indians but never did. After that,
Reggie punched Dr. Mather and was then expelled from the University. Dr. Mather is a big reason
why Reggie dislikes white men and also feels he has to defend Indians.
Marie is an Indian activist who believes Indians don't have the same rights as others. she is an
independent woman who doesn't back down from anyone. Her strong beliefs and determination of
fighting for Indian rights leads

Owl Pellets
Introduction
Owl pellets are masses of bone, teeth, hair, feathers and exoskeletons of various animals preyed
upon by raptors, or birds of prey. Owls have weak stomach muscles that form undigested bones,
feathers, and fur. Because they can't break those things down they regurgitate them in the form of a
ball called a pellet. Owls produce these pellets and regurgitated them approximately 20 hours after
eating. The purpose of this lab is to dissect an owl's pellet and investigate what was on that singular
owl's diet. We are first to do this by identifying the bones of the animals the owl eat.

If I were to examine and dissect a different owl pellet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4. After cleaning the bones we started to identify each single one of them with the bone diagram.
Once identified we organized the bones into groups and started labeling them. Bones Found: .
Scapula of a mole . Scapula of a rodent . Forelimb of a bird
. Pelvic bone of a shrew
. Rib of a rodent
5. Once we were done analyzing the bones and organizing them into groups, we cleaned everything
up and put our tools back were they belonged and how we originally found them.
Data analysis
1. What do we know about the digestive system of an owl based upon the pellets? Based upon the
pellets we know that owls cannot digest the bones of some animals because their enzymes aren't
sufficient enough to break them down. Because of this inability to digest fur, bones, and feathers
they are later on regurgitated out.
2. Owl pellets not only give us information about the diet of the owl, owl pellets also provide a
habitat for other animals, and in fact an owl pellet is a little ecosystem all on its own. What kinds of
animals are found in the owl pellet ecosystem? Clothes moths, carpet beetles, and fungi can be
found in the owl pellet ecosystem. The owl pellets provide food and a shelter for them to survive in.
3. Other types of birds form pellets. What would you expect to find in the

Grunnings In The Potter
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly
normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything
strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense. Mr. Dursley was the
director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any
neck, although he did have a very large mustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly
twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning
over garden fences, spying on the neighbors. The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in
their opinion there was no finer boy anywhere. The Dursleys had everything they ... Show more

Mrs. Potter was Mrs. Dursley's sister, but they hadn't met for several years; in fact, Mrs. Dursley
pretended she didn't have a sister, because her sister and her good–for–nothing husband were as
unDursleyish as it was possible to be. The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbors would
say if the Potters arrived in the street. The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son, too, but
they had never even seen him. This boy was another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they
didn't want Dudley mixing with a child like that. When Mr. and Mrs. Dursley woke up on the dull,
gray Tuesday our story starts, there was nothing about the cloudy sky outside to suggest that strange
and mysterious things would soon be happening all over the country. Mr. Dursley hummed as he
picked out his most boring tie for work, and Mrs. Dursley gossiped away happily as she wrestled a
screaming Dudley into his high chair. None of them noticed a large, tawny owl flutter past the
window. At half past eight, Mr. Dursley picked up his briefcase, pecked Mrs. Dursley on the cheek,
and tried to kiss Dudley good–bye but missed, because Dudley was now having a tantrum and

Management of Old–growth Forests in the Pacific Northwest
When westward expansion brought settlers to the Northwest in the 1800s, they discovered that
coniferous trees "forty feet in circumference [that] shot two–hundred feet straight up" flourished in
the forests of the Pacific coast (Ervin 55). These early pioneers found the opportunity for economic
growth in logging these vast forests of towering trees unlike any they had seen before. Today, the
timber industry still remains the backbone of economic support for Washington, Oregon, and
northwestern California, but an inevitable conflict has arisen between humans and our environment.

On July 23, 1990, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under the pressure of environmentalists and
scientific studies, listed the spotted owl as a "threatened" species, one step away from "endangered,"
and entitled themselves to protecting the owl from hunting, trading, or federal action that could
destroy its breeding or feeding grounds (Carey 13). This listing came on the heels of years of
extensive studies of the spotted owl and its habitat conducted by environmental groups, the timber
industry, and governmental researchers. These studies resulted in recommendations, such as the one
made in early 1990 by a committee headed by the U.S. Forest Service's chief, Jack Ward Thomas,
calling for "30–40 percent of public forests to be exempted from logging to protect the remaining
3000–6000 owl pairs" in the Northwest. Yet, by late 1990, there had been no decrease in the rate of
logging to accommodate the owl (Abate 8).
As early as 1971, biologists had warned the Forest Service and the timber industry that old–growth
logging could endanger the spotted owl, which is a slow breeder. Studies have shown that the
spotted owl's major prey, the red tree vole and the Northern flying squirrel, thrive in the environment
of the protective old–growth forest and that when the forest that an owl lives in is logged, it will
travel hundreds of miles to feed in distant ancient forests. As each acre of ancient trees falls, the

Burrowing owls often live in occupied prairie dog...
Burrowing owls often live in occupied prairie dog colonies. Researchers have proposed several
theories regarding why this occurs. One reason may be that owls avoid predation because they share
many of the same predators with black–tailed prairie dogs and the presence of the prairie dogs helps
to reduce predation. Another theory is that the burrowing owls live in active prairie dog colonies in
order to listen to the prairie dogs for cues on when a predator is near. This behavior has been
documented between other groups, usually mammals or reptiles responding to bird alarm calls. This
study aimed to show whether burrowing owls responded differently to prairie dog predator alarms
compared to other sounds, both biological and man made. To ... Show more content on

The burrowing owls' reactions were recorded on camera in order to analyze the number and rate of
responses to the different recordings. Only birds within 30 meters of the speakers were included in
the data. Alert responses were measured for the first 10 seconds of the stimulus broadcast to verify
that the bird continued to react beyond initial startling. Behaviors that were considered to be alert
behaviors included head turning, stretching to look up, vocalizing, and head bobbing. Relaxed
behaviors included sleeping, preening, yawning, and foraging. The behaviors were all noted during
the broadcast then categorized for data analysis. Statistical tests were performed to ensure that the
order of the sounds didn't affect results. The researchers also tested connections between nest
identity and observation location. Finally, they verified whether trials could be looked at
individually when the same nest was tested because the same individuals may have been observed
more than once. After all these statistical tests, the trials were adjusted to include the best results that
showed no confounding variables. The results showed that burrowing owls did increase alert
behaviors following a prairie dog alarm call. The alarm call produced a faster reaction than the
biological control sound of cows mooing and the reaction was sustained for a longer time period.

Do Not Challenge an Owl
We start this myth in the Greek Aegean sea. Warrior Potatoession was out traveling on her own.
Originally, this was a personal pleasure cruise. She was a strong woman, but everybody needs a
break at one point. But it won't stay that long for our young warrior. As she was sailing near a rocky
island, a pained winnie cut through the peaceful air. A pegasus fell from above and landed on the
island, too far for Poseidon to heal him. As Potatoession got closer, she noticed owl feathers all over
the pegasus wing, which was now broken. "What the underworld are owl feathers doing on a
pegasus wing?" She said to herself. "Maybe he ran into an owl... weird." The pegasus whined in
pain. Potatoession, not knowing that she should've just put him in the water, hauled the poor animal
onto her boat. As she was sailing home, a loud rumble from inside the water shook her boat and
roared out. Slowly but surely, a face appeared in the water waves. She then realized that it was
Poseidon, the sea god, and father of all horses and pegasi. "I see that you have found one of my
children", his voice boomed. "This is your kid?" she replied. " Yes, and I need him to be healed. But
I'm not capable to do so right now. His mother, Medusa, and i are going somewhere tonight. You
know, sort of a... date, you know? If you wish to stay in human form and not a pitiful sea slug, I
suggest you bring him into your house and heal him yourself." "A date, huh?"

Ferric couldn't remember the walk home from school. Perhaps because his mind was too busy

around in the apron of his shirt. He couldn't go in and let his mother see that he intended to stockpile

prize. "Ferric, is that you?" His mother called. "What are you doing?" "I'm drawing a map in the

hall and out onto the lawns in this fashion. Then around the castle and up the rocky hillside. Once
they had climbed the trail to the top, King Kelorth paused and looked out. Seen from the platform at
the mouth of the cave, Dragon Kingdom was spread–out far below: three minuscule cities, a
twisting river, and the rolling sea that separated the island from the mainland. "This used to be
enough," he said. "Thank you, Wargon. I can go on from here." He left Wargon at the mouth of the
cave and entered alone. When King Kelorth disappeared into the darkness of the cave, Wargon fell
on his knees, picked up a handful of loose soil and held it up to the sun. He stayed in this position
for a full two minutes and when the last of the dust was swept away by the wind, he spat on the

Spotted Owl Issue Analysis
This article main focus is to showcase the conflict that arises between environment and economy by
introducing an example of the spotted owl which was place in the "1973 endangered species act" in
1990 and was guaranteed a total of 6 million acres of old growth forest thus resulting in the timber
industry that represents part of the live hood of the Pacific north west. The main argument as is
stated in the article is "kill an owl save a logger" an is significant because it clearly has a cause and
effect. If the owls are to be protected it will result in an estimated loss of at least 31,000 jobs, and if
we choose jobs over owls it will result in the spotted owl population suffering another significant
loss of population thus getting them closer to extinction. Moreover the argument does not end here
because the timber industry and the unions that represent loggers and workers estimated that the job
loss could be even higher. The main topic of this argument is basically over space and resources

In the wild, animals have no choice but to do what it takes. Animals have to constantly be on the

killing is known as excessive killing.Surplus killing is where a predator kills more prey than what
they can immediately consume. Many believe that something just makes the animals go crazy and
that causes them to surplus kill. The truth behind it is that animals in the wild need food to survive.
There is constant competition with numerous animals in the wilderness over the food source. That's
when the instinct to survive takes over. These animals demolish whatever is in their way so that they
can eat.Isn't that what any rational human being would do, if it ever actually came down to

Tyto Alba's Diet Analysis
Discussion:
After 24 (1992–2016) years 2,176 pellets were analysed by the students at the County College of
Morris. Additionally, on average each pellet contained 2.6 prey equating to an average of 963 prey
discovered in owl pellets per year (Table 1). After the analysis of the pellets it was discovered that
the Tyto alba consumed a wide spectrum prey, primarily rodents. A total of six prey species were
discovered. The Microtus commonly known as voles were the most abundant prey in the Tyto alba's
diet. Three thousand six hundred and twenty three remains of the Microtus were identified in pellets
that were analysed with a relative abundance of 64.2%. Microtus is most abundant in temperate and
tropical regions, a common habitat for the Tyto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there were factors that had a negative impact on the study such as the misidentification of
prey. The remains of the consumed prey were small and very fragile which made them prone to
breakage. Additionally, before the pellets were transported to the County College of Morris for
analysis, they were stored and preserved in a lab at the Carolina Biological Supply Company. This
made it difficult to figure out if the prey composite was the Tyto alba's year round diet or if the
dominant species that were consumed depended on the season. In the future the time between when
the owl pellets are gathered to when they are analyzed should be reduce to give a more accurate data

Endangered Species: Burrowing Owls
For this project on endangered species I have chosen to do it on the burrowing owl. I have chosen
the owl because I really like owls and they are such majestic animals. I am going to be saying stuff
on the Burrowing owl and why they are endangered and what is being done to rescue them.
The Burrowing owl is a very endangered species. There are fewer than 1000 pairs in Canada. The
average burrowing owl grows up to 23–28 centimeters tall and weighs up to 125 to 185 grams. A
Burrowing owl is a small, sandy looking animal with bright yellow eyes and a dark yellow beak. A
Burrowing owl lives mostly in deserts or grassland so they can hunt in the open. They nest in
underground burrows that they steal from a ground squirrel (gopher) or a prairie dog. The
Burrowing owl is a very strange owl as it hunts during the day and can also run on the ground. ...

One being that most of the land where the Burrowing owl usually nests has been turned into
agriculture causing the owl to lose its home and not be able to nest in that location anymore.
Another reason is that since a Burrowing owl doesn't dig its own burrow to nest in so they rely
heavily on Gophers and Prairie dogs. As those animals are seen as pests and constantly getting killed
there are very limited places for the owl to nest in and this is a very large reason on why they have
become an endangered species. The Burrowing owls have not been reproducing as well as they used
to and since they have such a high death rate since they only live on average 2–3

Chapter Summary: Ghost Dancing At Pine Ridge
Colonel Smith Johnson rode on his horse towards Pine Ridge, armed with his service rifle and a
small pouch of gunpowder. The past few months, everyone had been worried about the Ghost Dance
spiritual movement the natives were performing. The natives believed they were confined to specific
reserves as a kind of punishment from their gods for disobeying them. They were no longer listening
to the government, and everyone was in fear at the thought of a possible rebellion..
It didn't help that just a few weeks earlier, Sitting Bull, a Sioux Chief, was killed when reservation
officers falsely accused and attempted to arrest him for being a "Ghost Dancer".
When Smith arrived at Pine Ridge, he met up with the rest of the 7th Cavalry. One of the cavalry ...

Everything happened within the blink of an eye. One of the natives was arguing with a soldier. The
Native was pushing him around, trying to grab his weapon back.
There was a shot fired. The Native fell back onto the ground as the others watched in horror. It
wasn't long before an all out battle was taking place. The scent of gunpowder filled the air, natives
were swinging fists on soldiers and taking weapons back from the wagon. The horses were fleeing
the scene, galloping as fast as they could.
Soldiers fired shot after shot on the natives, even though the Major was ordering them to cease fire.
Even though the soldiers won the battle, it hadn't felt like a victory. 25 soldiers were lost, along with
150 Native American lives. A price, that couldn't be easily repaid.
Two weeks later, there hadn't been any news about the Ghost Dancers. All the rituals had stopped
and the natives seemed to be back following the government's orders once more.

Why We Should Be Allowed Animals In Captivity Essay
Animals in Captivity Should animals in Captivity be allowed? Animals in Captivity should be
allowed because they get the medicine they need, animals can live longer, and the animals can get
smarter. The first reason animals in captivity should be allowed is that animals can get healthy.
There are rehabilitation programs that nurse animals back to health.Veterinarians can prevent and
control a disease. Second, animals can live longer in captivity. In the article, by Hannah J. O'regan
and Andrew C. Kitchener states, "Gorillas live for more than 50 years in captivity compared to 35
years in the wild" (223). The animals diets also help them live longer. Lastly animals can get
smarter. Animals in captivity do more activities making them smarter. For example, "Rats raised in
enriched environments had larger brains"(O'regan and Kitchener 224). Animals in captivity should
be allowed because they are able to get healthier, their lifespan increases, and they get more
intelligent. Animals in captivity should be allowed because they can get healthy. The first reason
they get healthy is there are rehabilitation programs. According to The Current, "Rehabilitation
programs take ill or injured animals and nurse them to health so that they may be reintroduced back
to the wild" ( Should Animals Be Kept In Captivity n. pag.). Rehabilitators learn to recognize and
treat many kinds of medical and surgical problems (Duke et al. 97). Wildlife rehabilitation saves

Theme Of The Scarlet Ibis
In the short story "The Scarlet Ibis," James Hurst uses the setting to have a greater effect on how the
reader feels while reading the text. Hurst uses the setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the
text, such as Doodle learning how to walk and stand, the dark parts of the narrative, such as when
Doodle dies, and also uses setting to bring attention to the emotions felt by the reader and mood of
the story. Hurst uses setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the text in order to affect how the
audience feels while reading the story. Doodle stands up for the first time in Old Woman Swamp,
which is a very "happy" and "carefree" place. There, "the grass beneath [them] was soft and the
smell of the swamp was sweet." When Doodle finally stands up, there's a sense of relief and
happiness that we have for Doodle, as he has made a major life achievement. He completes this
achievement in Old Woman Swamp, which was a very happy place. Doodle himself calls Old
Woman Swamp "'So pretty, pretty, pretty.'" Many flowers can be found in Old Woman Swamp, and
Brother describes these flowers as "jewels." Brother also makes note of the way the sunlight touched
the tops of the trees, "[where] the slanted rays of the sun [burns] orange in the tops of the pines."
This gives Old Woman Swamp a glowing and heaven–like feeling, which translates to the reader, so
the reader will feel just as lighthearted and carefree as Doodle and Brother felt while they were at

Hieronymus Bosch Essay
For my final project I chose to do a study on the artist Hieronymus Bosch, or more specifically I
decided to focus on his use of owls in his various paintings. Bosch was a very interesting lad and his
paintings lean toward the bizarre end of a normalcy spectrum. Individuals likeminded to Bosch
fascinate me. My mind does not function or view things the same way and I find it very intriguing. I
cannot even imagine what types of discussions (much less guess the probable subjects) Bosch would
have had with his fellow artists in his time.
A secondary reason I chose to explore the meanings behind the use of owls is because I have a
personal fascination with owls. I already knew that owls are well–known for their association
wisdom, as well as the association with specific "knowledge and erudition that can see through
obscurity (and as the bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom), the owl appears frequently in
the emblems of scholarly publishing houses and book stores" (Biedermann, 250.) However, Bosch

The owl is depicted as Christ, "giving the light of truth" evidenced by the writing in Lucas 1:79 and
obviously portraying the owl in a positive light. The other depiction is the owl as a sinner "being
dark and having fallen away from God" evidenced by the passage in Leviticus 11:6 which identifies
owls as unclean creatures, therefore in a negative light. The concept of owls symbolizing the turning
from spiritual light is supported additionally through a passage from Dictionary of Symbolism:
Cultural Icons and the Meanings Behind Them in which it is explained that this new symbolic
meaning is derived from many factors including "nocturnal habits, solitude, silent flight, and

Juan A Narrative Fiction
For a moment his body was black in the cave entrance, crouched and silent, and then he was gone.
Juana hugged her child to her breast. Below her, Kino dispatched the trackers. Huddled in a corner
Juana studied her surroundings. Sloping to the ceiling were walls of stone. Small shafts of weak
moonlight penetrated the gloom of the cave. If it was day small lizards would bask in the sun. The
sandstone floor was cool, easing the inimical heat of the desert. Then, why? Why did no small lizard
or scorpion scuttle beneath her feet? The air was warm and humid, but it felt cold to her. She
shivered. Kino was no longer the man she loved, instead he had become as savage as the dog they
had named their child for.

heart and the four–noted paean song burst from her lips. The pearl lay on the floor of the cave,

its sibling were in the cave. No sign of their mother, yet. Juana lifted the pearl... but then its music

Snowy owls tend to be like other owls in that they are monogamous and mate for life. They are
fiercely protective of their nests and breeding area. They will go so far as to attack wolves if they
believe them to be a threat ("Snowy Owl", 2012). This extreme protection does not just stop with
their own nest. They create an unintentional benefit to dark–bellied brent geese who nest close to
snowy owls for the protection of their own nests. The closer these geese place their nests to the
snowy owl's nest the safer they are as well as if their nest is far from the snowy owl nest there is
more danger and thus a higher chance of nest abandonment. The more protection these geese have
the larger the number and size of their eggs as well (van Kleef, Willems, Volkov, Smeets, Nowak,
& Nowak, 2007).
The average clutch (number of eggs) size is between three and eleven depending on the population
density of their food source that year. When there is a particularly lean year in food source some owl
pairs never mate and do not produce a clutch. Females will incubate the eggs while the male
provides food and protection. The eggs are laid only one every other day. The incubation period is
about 32 days and the young do not leave the nest until they are about 25 days old. The young do
not fly very well until

Owl Pellet Lab Report
Lab Report: Owl Pellet
Kirsten de Jong
September 19, 2015
1. An owl pellet is made up of portions of things which an owl can't digest. The pellet can contain
things like feathers, bones, fur, and teeth, these things have very little nutritional value to the owl.
These things are tightly formed together in the owl's stomach, which is then spit out by the owl
every 12 hours producing two every day.
2. Owl pellets are home and food for many different fungi and insects. Fumigation is the removal of
any small insects, germs, or other pests from a room or other area, with the use of gases or smoke. It
is necessary for the pellet to be fumigated so there is nothing growing inside of the pellet that wasn't
there when the owl had spit it out. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There would be major changes if the barn owl wasn't part of the food web. There would be many
more rodents and other pests in agricultural and forestry land, which would eventually become
overpopulated. God created a perfect world and if there was even one animal that wasn't part of an
ecosystem, there would be many species with overpopulation issues.
8. Bioconcentration is when tiny creatures capture chemicals from debris, which is a large source of
diseases, and water which are then devoured by large populations of zooplankton. Larger organisms
like my sides then eat the zooplankton, fish feed on the mysids, this continues until the herring
which is at the top of this food web. This can causes many diseases to spread over a period of time
from one creature to the next and possibly worsen. Bioaccumulation is when the matter of an
organism increases in concentration.
9. Owls can be seen as the most threatened of an ecosystem which is threatened by pesticides
because it is the highest trophic level in the food web. The higher the trophic level, the higher the
concentration of toxins in the species. There may be a tiny bit of pesticide in a plant which is then
eaten by a insect which is then eaten by a shrew. The shrew then gets more toxins, then giving the
owl which is at the top of the food web the most toxins causing it to become sick and die. Overall,
these pesticides in ecosystems can disturb food webs, ecosystems, and hurt

Spotted Owl, Flying Squirrel, Truffle Symbiosis
Throughout the world there are many animals, plants, fungi and numerous other living organisms
that are influenced by the overall condition or adaptations of other organisms. Whether it is a

other living organisms operate and live; both dependent on others and their own adaptations. The
point is that there are many relationships that provide a basis and means for the survival of a variety

Unlike many other rodents the flying squirrel does not hibernate. Instead they group together during
the winter and cold month's to maintain warmth. Northern flying squirrels usually communicate
with a soft low chirp but also cluck just like other squirrels when distressed. These squirrels also use
scent and touch to communicate with one another; utilizing their excellent senses of hearing, smell,
vision, and touch to correspond with the signals they emanate. "A major food source for the
squirrels are mycorrhizal fungi (truffles) of many different species, though they also eat lichens,
mushrooms, all mast–crop nuts, tree sap, insects, carrion, bird eggs and nestlings, buds and flowers.
The squirrels are special in that they can find truffles by olfaction, which is the use of smell. They
also seem to use clues such as the presence of wood debris, indicating a decaying log, and spatial
memory of locations where truffles were found in the past. The northern flying squirrel is also
known to stash food for when food supplies are lower such as in the winter. These caches can be in
cavities in trees, as well as in the squirrels' nest, or even within the ground. Lichens and seeds are
the commonly stored items" (9). Yet in this relationship the most important functions of this squirrel

Different Characteristics Of Forests, Grasslands And Savannas
Grasslands/Savannas
Savannas, also known as tropical grasslands, are open spaces where the vegetation is dominated by
grass. They are found between forests and deserts, where there is the perfect amount of rainfall in
order for this biome to survive. Savannas are located in South America, Africa, India, and Australia.
They have warm temperature the whole year, and there are two different seasons, a dry winter that
lasts 4–6 months, and a wet summer that lasts 6–8 months. Temperatures in this biome can climb
above 90° F during summer. And during winter, it usually falls to 64° F. The average rainfall is from
20–50 inches per year.
The dry season begins with violent thunderstorms that create strong winds. These factors often
promotes the spread of fires during this season, which causes most animals to migrate to another
area; most of the plants begin to die, with the exception of the ones that have underground storage
organs to help them survive; and the rivers dry up. However, when the rainy season arrives, many
types of grasses grow in the savannas and they easily survive seasonal fires; rivers flow freely; lakes
fill up again; and the animals that migrated will come back to the savanna.
In order to survive, tropical grasslands need the dry. If it rained all year, the area would become a
tropical forest. On the other hand, if it didn't rain at all, then it would become a dessert. In many
savannas a combination of seasonal fires and large numbers of grazing animals

Introduction
The California Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis occidentalis) is a subspecies of the Spotted Owl.
They are found in northwestern California, western Oregon, western Washington, and southwestern
British Columbia. They live in old growth forests around 200 years old, preferring Douglas–fir and
high canopy areas. They are described as medium sized, brown owls with white spots. The
California Spotted Owl has a height of about 1.5 feet and a wing span of around 4 feet. The
California Spotted Owl is a nocturnal bird whose diet consists of rodents, reptiles, invertebrates and

"Whats a full shine," Soren asked.(Lasky 44) The Author shows when they meet and get to know

The author shows great craft in the book, one way she does show craft is in her dialogue. She
expresses the character's emotions by adding different words to the dialogue and signs. For
example,"I did it!" gasped Soren.(Lasky 164) The author says Soren gaspes instead of he said, also
she shows that it is an exciting moment because there is an exclamation point at the end of the
talking. The Author also puts song lyrics in the book, this shows craft because it is what the owls
like doing when they are happy or praising someone, for example,"What gives a wriggle and makes
you giggle when you'em whose weensy little feeling make my heart really beat that makes me feel
so jolly for the darling centipede my favorite buggy feed I always want some more that's the insect I
adore more than beetles, more than crickets which at times gives me hiccups I crave only to feed on
a juicy centipede I shall be happy forever .(Lasky12) This is good author craft because it shows that
the owls ike centipedes they made a song to remind them of how it taste and makes them feel.

argued that in order to complete a goal you need teamwork. This is true because if there is a hard

The Power Of Cruelty In The Scarlet Ibis
The Power of Cruelty The dangers of cruelty in life ultimately overpower emotions and decisions of
higher quality. Difficult decisions are made daily, and the compelling idea of satisfaction leads
people to make choices for the sake of themselves. The emotions that potentially can happen
because of those decisions are captivating, resulting in cruel outcomes. An author that portrays this
idea through a character is James Hurst. In his work, "The Scarlet Ibis", Hurst develops a
relationship between two brothers using the idea that cruelty ultimately overpowers love. The
brothers, Doodle and Brother, experience events that cause them to make valued memories, but also
break close bonds. Through these experiences, Brother begins to accept his disabled brother,
Doodle, for his limitations. Doodle has to be extremely cautious due to his disability, never letting
an emotion or feeling become too strong. Some events lead Brother to show affection towards
Doodle, but others prompt him to do just the opposite. Hurst uses Old Woman Swamp and the coffin
as symbols in, "The Scarlet Ibis", to assist in demonstrating the highs and lows of Brother and
Doodle's volatile relationship. To emphasize the positive, high points of Brother and Doodle's
relationship, Hurst utilizes the symbol of Old Woman Swamp, their shared safe haven. Brother

days, and the owlets usually fledge after forty–two days, around September. Burrowing owls diets

Without proper nourishment and food the species cannot reproduce and expand their species further.
Reproduction is vital to any species because it continues the growth and increases biodiversity. If
any animal species were to stop breeding, it would slowly cause extinction of the species.
Burrowing owls are not at the top of the food chain, which makes them prey for other animals.
Baby burrowing owls are clearly the biggest predators in their habitat. There are many reasons as to
why burrowing owls are rapidly declining due to death. Burrowing owls have been killed by
predators, starvation due to food shortage, vehicle accidents, and shooting accidents. Wandering pet
cats have recently become detrimental to many wildlife species. These house cats are responsible for
the deaths of more than a billion birds in North America each year. Cats have a devastating impact
on native wildlife such as the burrowing owl. The issue of pesticides infecting the burrowing owls is
still under investigation. The owls also may be coming in contact with pesticides indirectly through
other animals they are using as a food

Spotted Owl Essay
The spotted owls in western North America still exist today, despite being an endangered species.
There has been plenty of controversy surrounding the species regarding their habitat because their
habitat is desired and used by logging companies. These owls tend to reside in old forests as they
prefer old trees which are also preferred for logging. There has been plenty of controversy on
whether or not logging companies should be put to a halt in forests that these owls reside in, which
involve balancing values of environment and economy. This is mainly due to the fact that logging
provides jobs as well as resources to people, despite the fact that it affects the owls and their
ecosystem. It is debated whether or not owl's habitat and ecosystem should be protected or not for
the sake of logging.
Due to unfortunate circumstances, such as logging, the spotted owl's habitat has been declining, thus
resulting in the population to also decline. It has been reported that, "there are fewer than 100 pairs
of Northern spotted owls in British Columbia, Canada, 1,200 pairs in Oregon, 560 pairs in northern
California and 500 pairs in the state of Washington." ("Basic Facts About Northern Spotted Owls"
2012), which demonstrates the the small amount of spotted owls left in parts of western North
America. This coincides with the fact that the population is declining five times faster than
anticipated under a British Columbia plan. The population has declined rapidly between 1992 to

The Contributions Of Olivia Judson

  • 1. The Contributions of Olivia Judson Olivia Judson, an evolutionary biologist with a doctorate in biological sciences and the author of The Definitive Guide to the Evolutionary Biology of Sex: Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation tells of her in–depth research on procreation to educate others on the sex life of all creation while incorporating the organismsf scientific names. Each chapter of the book begins with letters containing questions from an animal, amphibian, bug, arachnid, or other organism that, at times, must be put under a magnifying glass to see. The questions themselves are under three different categories. These categories are as follows: gPart One: Let Slip the Whores of War!h gPart Two: The Evolution of Depravityh gPart Three: Are Men Necessary? Usually, but Not Always.h Each category of the book is filled with questions that range from why some organisms find copulation boring in their relationships to simple anatomical questions. Dr. Tatiana answers each of the proposed questions with comparisons to other organisms that experience the same situations. By doing this, she further provides readers with information on multiple organisms. Judson contributes to onefs understanding of sex among different organisms in that she makes difficult concepts simple to comprehend. Although she uses scientific terminology, she limits it so that anyone can understand the technical information she shares. Judson also describes the types of environments in which each species and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Characteristics Of The Great Horned Owls What do you think of when you hear the word, "owl?" You might picture a barred owl with its elegant white feathers and small beak. But what about its distant relative? The Great Horned owl lives up to its name by its horned ears. This remarkable creature really stands out in the bird family due to the lack of predators and how small and aggressive it is. The Great Horned Owl is one of many Owls. Although there are many different species of owls, this one is unique. This particular owl is small, has a different diet, is widely known, and is one of the more radical looking owls. The Great Horned Owl is a beautiful, majestic type of bird. It's a smaller kind of owl, but it sure does pack a punch. It's known for "its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow–eyed stare, and deep hooting voice..."(Great Horned Owl.) Some wonder where this owl is found due to the fact the most widely known is the barred owl. It's normally found all over the Arctic and South America. These creatures are nocturnal so they would be easier to spot in the night time. All owls are known for how aggressive and strong they are. Well, this one in particular lives up to the phrase, "tiny but mighty." Their bodies average eighteen to twenty one inches. Averaging a wingspan of 3.3–4.8 feet. These birds can weigh anywhere from two pounds to around 5.5 pounds. Although these birds are already small in size, the females are slightly larger than the males. As like the rest of the owls, these are also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Fight Or Flight Instinct The deaths have taken the place of reason in my mind; they have made the decision to leave Novi Templi for me, and have murdered the voices of reason and common sense, and left only the screaming voices of revenge in my tortured mind saying but one word: RUN. The journey to Veteribus will be long. The voices tell me so, but they have been tortured by what my eyes have seen throughout my long 17 years in this dreadful excuse of a country. So much so that nothing remains of the original, innocent, and human thoughts of the babe I once was. The fight or flight instinct is now my trained response. Always on guard, always alert. The bag on his shoulder is that of a pig 's skin and smells slightly of death. This smell makes me want to gag, but I manage to keep my composure happy and professional. Sean pulls a small gun out of the bag and proudly presents his findings with me. Further inside the bag are small pouches of food, a knife, a compass, and water filter bags with matches. I nod my head in approval and proceed to show him the few things that I have that might serve some purpose for our escape: a flashlight, a wrench, a hammer, and a small bucket. Sean's eyes scan over my findings in a timely manner, and his hands examine the rusted materials that I have placed in front of him. He sets them down where they were and looks at me in a state of thought. "You know, these could be helpful if we ever needed to unscrew the bolts that have been placed in the soldier's brains, or hammer out their robot arms." • 7. The Hoggins Alternate Ending The Hoggins were the kind very fond of adventures. They lived in a small town, called Leaz–vile, in their miniature nest. Now, Chumper Hoggins was the very curious type of owl. He lived with his mother, Anarople, and father, Gregriy. He had no siblings, but he really did wish he had a sister or brother. This owl family was very different, they could turn into humans when they hit land. They could also shoot fire from their talons. Aside from all that, there was a store not far from their little nest. "Wake up Chumper, we have to hurry and get to the store's sale before anyone else gets there," exclaimed Anarople. "Really mom, it's 6 a.m.!" complained Chumper. "Yes of course we do, it's the one and only sale of the year," said Anarople. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Nice job son!" said Anarople and Gregiry in unison. After they completed the task of killing Groug the Goblin they set off in his lair to go find the wings. After of about two days of looking they came across a very dark room in the bottom of the mountain. They investigated this cave and sure enough about one hour later they came across the ancient golden and diamond wings of an owl. "Finally, we found the wings after so much hard work!" exclaimed Chumper. "Yes we did, and you did a lot to help," said Anarople. After they found the wings they knew they needed to get them back to the bird as soon as possible. They hurriedly made a run for it out of the mountain, just in case any Shelobs were leftover. They jumped right back into owl form, then flew out of the small crack in the door. "I can't believe we just achieved that goal!" said Gregiry. "I also can't believe that we are already on our way home!" exclaimed Chumper. They talked and talked for while until they noticed that they were flying over the ocean that Tider had lived in. Spotted Owl Research Paper Spotted Owl Population Falling, Could go From Threatened to Endangered Just about anyone who has heard about the plight of endangered species has heard of the spotted owls, as they became one of the poster animals for it back in the 1990s when these birds were put on the threatened species list during the adventure of the Timber Wars of the Northwest. The loggers wanted to cut down trees where the spotted owls lived, and they couldn't due to the owls living in them. Now, decades later these iconic spotted owls are still in danger despite the efforts of the Endangered Species Act and the feds may change their status from "threatened" to "endangered" to try to bring up their population is the US. The announcement came by the US Fish and Wildlife ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reports have put the population of the spotted owls at under 4,000 individuals, as of 2011. Studies are usually done every five years by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to check on threatened species. One thought is to protect spotted owls by killing the barred owls in several areas to see if the spotted owls will travel back to those habitats. This experiment will be conducted in Oregon and Washington later this year, and is already being done on private land in California. The process is expected to last three years to see what happens and if it helps bring up the population of the spotted owls and get them to travel back to those areas where the barred owls are now living. Even if the spotted owls go from the threatened moniker to the endangered status, it doesn't offer the birds any more real protection or money, according to the officials. In some cases, the birds can even still be killed by logging companies depending on the area to be cut, but this change in status could make it harder for the logging companies to get a permit to kill spotted owls. In fact, in the past there have been petitions to get the spotted owls totally removed from any protected list, but it was found by the ESA to lack evidence to do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people have wondered why this insignificant owl gets more press than the decimation of salmon streams nationwide, when it would have no economic impact on our society as a whole. The logging industry has made millions of dollars from the harvesting of old growth lumber over the past several decades. Recently, they have become more responsible about clear–cut logging. Harvested forests are often replanted to provide for future wildlife habitat and logging efforts. However, this doesn't help the spotted owl. It needs old growth forests with their tangle of massive trees and thick dense brush. The logging industry is threatened by this small owl. Thousands of jobs have been lost. Families are starving. Lumber prices have skyrocketed. So this sets up a struggle. Loggers need the lumber for economic prosperity. Environmentalists want to protect this owl. How will both parties win? Can both parties win? There are many issues that arise out of this conflict. The public needs cost efficient lumber. The loggers need their jobs. The spotted owl needs a home.

  • 14. Analysis Of Indian Killer By Sherman Alexie In Indian Killer by Sherman Alexie, gruesome events hint towards each main character being a possible suspect. John Smith is the main character of the story that the readers know most about. Sherman Alexie gives John a mental disability in order to give the readers a suspect of being the killer. Reggie, Marie, Dr. Mather, and Jack Wilson are also main characters that can arguably be the killer. Reggie and Marie are the Indian killers because of the various death threats they make towards white men. Reggie refers to himself as an Indian. He is very intelligent but that's only because of his father. Reggie's father is a rich white man and his mother is a poor Indian woman. His father would physically beat him in order to ensure that Reggie would not turn into a rebellious or dirty Indian. When he was young he preferred to be more white than Indian because he believed he was successful when he was treated like other white people. With the belief that being half Indian was bad, Reggie tried to hide his Indian culture. "I don't know. Don't care much, either" (96). When asked about his father, Reggie would blow off the question or respond with a careless answer. His father, being white, does not help Reggie's thoughts about white people. Ironically , as Reggie gets older he decides to start learning more about the Indian culture. The college class he takes at the University of Washington shows the readers how passionate he is about being Indian. Reggie and his professor, Dr. Mather, start to become good friends even outside of class. After that, Reggie punched Dr. Mather and was then expelled from the University. • 16. Essay about owl pellet report Owl Pellets Introduction Owl pellets are masses of bone, teeth, hair, feathers and exoskeletons of various animals preyed upon by raptors, or birds of prey. Owls have weak stomach muscles that form undigested bones, feathers, and fur. Because they can't break those things down they regurgitate them in the form of a ball called a pellet. Owls produce these pellets and regurgitated them approximately 20 hours after eating. The purpose of this lab is to dissect an owl's pellet and investigate what was on that singular owl's diet. We are first to do this by identifying the bones of the animals the owl eat. Hypothesis If I were to examine and dissect a different owl pellet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 4. After cleaning the bones we started to identify each single one of them with the bone diagram. Once identified we organized the bones into groups and started labeling them. Bones Found: . Scapula of a mole . Scapula of a rodent . Forelimb of a bird . Pelvic bone of a shrew . Rib of a rodent 5. Once we were done analyzing the bones and organizing them into groups, we cleaned everything up and put our tools back were they belonged and how we originally found them. Data analysis 1. What do we know about the digestive system of an owl based upon the pellets? Based upon the pellets we know that owls cannot digest the bones of some animals because their enzymes aren't sufficient enough to break them down. Because of this inability to digest fur, bones, and feathers they are later on regurgitated out. 2. Owl pellets not only give us information about the diet of the owl, owl pellets also provide a habitat for other animals, and in fact an owl pellet is a little ecosystem all on its own. What kinds of animals are found in the owl pellet ecosystem? Clothes moths, carpet beetles, and fungi can be found in the owl pellet ecosystem. The owl pellets provide food and a shelter for them to survive in. 3. Other types of birds form pellets. What would you expect to find in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense. Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large mustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbors. Mrs. Potter was Mrs. Dursley's sister, but they hadn't met for several years; in fact, Mrs. Dursley pretended she didn't have a sister, because her sister and her good–for–nothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be. The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbors would say if the Potters arrived in the street. The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son, too, but they had never even seen him. This boy was another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they didn't want Dudley mixing with a child like that. When Mr. and Mrs. Dursley woke up on the dull, gray Tuesday our story starts, there was nothing about the cloudy sky outside to suggest that strange and mysterious things would soon be happening all over the country. Mr. Dursley hummed as he picked out his most boring tie for work, and Mrs. Dursley gossiped away happily as she wrestled a screaming Dudley into his high chair. None of them noticed a large, tawny owl flutter past the window. Management of Old–growth Forests in the Pacific Northwest When westward expansion brought settlers to the Northwest in the 1800s, they discovered that coniferous trees "forty feet in circumference [that] shot two–hundred feet straight up" flourished in the forests of the Pacific coast (Ervin 55). These early pioneers found the opportunity for economic growth in logging these vast forests of towering trees unlike any they had seen before. Today, the timber industry still remains the backbone of economic support for Washington, Oregon, and northwestern California, but an inevitable conflict has arisen between humans and our environment. A struggle over the control of the use of the old–growth forests threatens the balance of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On July 23, 1990, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under the pressure of environmentalists and scientific studies, listed the spotted owl as a "threatened" species, one step away from "endangered," and entitled themselves to protecting the owl from hunting, trading, or federal action that could destroy its breeding or feeding grounds (Carey 13). This listing came on the heels of years of extensive studies of the spotted owl and its habitat conducted by environmental groups, the timber industry, and governmental researchers. These studies resulted in recommendations, such as the one made in early 1990 by a committee headed by the U.S. Forest Service's chief, Jack Ward Thomas, calling for "30–40 percent of public forests to be exempted from logging to protect the remaining 3000–6000 owl pairs" in the Northwest. Yet, by late 1990, there had been no decrease in the rate of logging to accommodate the owl (Abate 8). As early as 1971, biologists had warned the Forest Service and the timber industry that old–growth logging could endanger the spotted owl, which is a slow breeder. Studies have shown that the spotted owl's major prey, the red tree vole and the Northern flying squirrel, thrive in the environment of the protective old–growth forest and that when the forest that an owl lives in is logged, it will travel hundreds of miles to feed in distant ancient forests. As each acre of ancient trees falls, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Burrowing owls often live in occupied prairie dog... Burrowing owls often live in occupied prairie dog colonies. Researchers have proposed several theories regarding why this occurs. One reason may be that owls avoid predation because they share many of the same predators with black–tailed prairie dogs and the presence of the prairie dogs helps to reduce predation. Another theory is that the burrowing owls live in active prairie dog colonies in order to listen to the prairie dogs for cues on when a predator is near. This behavior has been documented between other groups, usually mammals or reptiles responding to bird alarm calls. This study aimed to show whether burrowing owls responded differently to prairie dog predator alarms compared to other sounds, both biological and man made. To ... Only birds within 30 meters of the speakers were included in the data. Alert responses were measured for the first 10 seconds of the stimulus broadcast to verify that the bird continued to react beyond initial startling. Behaviors that were considered to be alert behaviors included head turning, stretching to look up, vocalizing, and head bobbing. Relaxed behaviors included sleeping, preening, yawning, and foraging. The behaviors were all noted during the broadcast then categorized for data analysis. Statistical tests were performed to ensure that the order of the sounds didn't affect results. The researchers also tested connections between nest identity and observation location. Finally, they verified whether trials could be looked at individually when the same nest was tested because the same individuals may have been observed more than once. After all these statistical tests, the trials were adjusted to include the best results that showed no confounding variables. The results showed that burrowing owls did increase alert behaviors following a prairie dog alarm call. The alarm call produced a faster reaction than the biological control sound of cows mooing and the reaction was sustained for a longer time period. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was a strong woman, but everybody needs a break at one point. But it won't stay that long for our young warrior. As she was sailing near a rocky island, a pained winnie cut through the peaceful air. A pegasus fell from above and landed on the island, too far for Poseidon to heal him. As Potatoession got closer, she noticed owl feathers all over the pegasus wing, which was now broken. "What the underworld are owl feathers doing on a pegasus wing?" She said to herself. "Maybe he ran into an owl... weird." The pegasus whined in pain. Potatoession, not knowing that she should've just put him in the water, hauled the poor animal onto her boat. As she was sailing home, a loud rumble from inside the water shook her boat and roared out. Slowly but surely, a face appeared in the water waves. She then realized that it was Poseidon, the sea god, and father of all horses and pegasi. "I see that you have found one of my children", his voice boomed. "This is your kid?" she replied. " Yes, and I need him to be healed. But I'm not capable to do so right now. His mother, Medusa, and i are going somewhere tonight. You know, sort of a... date, you know? Spotted Owl Issue Analysis This article main focus is to showcase the conflict that arises between environment and economy by introducing an example of the spotted owl which was place in the "1973 endangered species act" in 1990 and was guaranteed a total of 6 million acres of old growth forest thus resulting in the timber industry that represents part of the live hood of the Pacific north west. The main argument as is stated in the article is "kill an owl save a logger" an is significant because it clearly has a cause and effect. If the owls are to be protected it will result in an estimated loss of at least 31,000 jobs, and if we choose jobs over owls it will result in the spotted owl population suffering another significant loss of population thus getting them closer to extinction. Moreover the argument does not end here because the timber industry and the unions that represent loggers and workers estimated that the job loss could be even higher. Animals in Captivity should be allowed because they get the medicine they need, animals can live longer, and the animals can get smarter. The first reason animals in captivity should be allowed is that animals can get healthy. There are rehabilitation programs that nurse animals back to health.Veterinarians can prevent and control a disease. Second, animals can live longer in captivity. In the article, by Hannah J. O'regan and Andrew C. Kitchener states, "Gorillas live for more than 50 years in captivity compared to 35 years in the wild" (223). The animals diets also help them live longer. Lastly animals can get smarter. Animals in captivity do more activities making them smarter. For example, "Rats raised in enriched environments had larger brains"(O'regan and Kitchener 224). Animals in captivity should be allowed because they are able to get healthier, their lifespan increases, and they get more intelligent. Hurst uses the setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the text, such as Doodle learning how to walk and stand, the dark parts of the narrative, such as when Doodle dies, and also uses setting to bring attention to the emotions felt by the reader and mood of the story. Hurst uses setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the text in order to affect how the audience feels while reading the story. Doodle stands up for the first time in Old Woman Swamp, which is a very "happy" and "carefree" place. There, "the grass beneath [them] was soft and the smell of the swamp was sweet." When Doodle finally stands up, there's a sense of relief and happiness that we have for Doodle, as he has made a major life achievement. Bosch was a very interesting lad and his paintings lean toward the bizarre end of a normalcy spectrum. Individuals likeminded to Bosch fascinate me. My mind does not function or view things the same way and I find it very intriguing. I cannot even imagine what types of discussions (much less guess the probable subjects) Bosch would have had with his fellow artists in his time. A secondary reason I chose to explore the meanings behind the use of owls is because I have a personal fascination with owls. I already knew that owls are well–known for their association wisdom, as well as the association with specific "knowledge and erudition that can see through obscurity (and as the bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom), the owl appears frequently in the emblems of scholarly publishing houses and book stores" (Biedermann, 250.) Small shafts of weak moonlight penetrated the gloom of the cave. If it was day small lizards would bask in the sun. The sandstone floor was cool, easing the inimical heat of the desert. Then, why? Why did no small lizard or scorpion scuttle beneath her feet? The air was warm and humid, but it felt cold to her. She shivered. Kino was no longer the man she loved, instead he had become as savage as the dog they had named their child for. A stench hung over the valley. It was the scent of death. The shouts of men rang over the mountains, nearly drowning out the low growling behind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tears flowing freely now, she kissed his forehead and moved quickly to the cave. She paused before entering. The song of evil and the enemy harmonized, but beneath it all was the ever–present sweet song of the glistening pearl. Gathering her courage, she stepped in. Now a song of relief filled her heart and the four–noted paean song burst from her lips. The pearl lay on the floor of the cave, contained in a brilliant beam of moonlight, and beyond that? Only the slumped body of the cub and its sibling were in the cave. No sign of their mother, yet. Juana lifted the pearl... but then its music was muted. Her hackles raised and an eerie feeling settled upon her once more. Her heart palpitated quickly and blood roared in her ears. The music of danger played madly, but was muted. Knowing what she would find, Juana turned around slowly. She was correct. Framed in the mouth of the cave was a large puma. The cat's eyes glittered like the devil's. With a roar the mother puma leapt. Juana's own cry of rage split the air. She charged at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Snowy owls tend to be like other owls in that they are monogamous and mate for life. They are fiercely protective of their nests and breeding area. They will go so far as to attack wolves if they believe them to be a threat ("Snowy Owl", 2012). This extreme protection does not just stop with their own nest. They create an unintentional benefit to dark–bellied brent geese who nest close to snowy owls for the protection of their own nests. The closer these geese place their nests to the snowy owl's nest the safer they are as well as if their nest is far from the snowy owl nest there is more danger and thus a higher chance of nest abandonment. • 59. Owl Pellet Lab Report Lab Report: Owl Pellet Kirsten de Jong September 19, 2015 1. An owl pellet is made up of portions of things which an owl can't digest. The pellet can contain things like feathers, bones, fur, and teeth, these things have very little nutritional value to the owl. These things are tightly formed together in the owl's stomach, which is then spit out by the owl every 12 hours producing two every day. 2. Owl pellets are home and food for many different fungi and insects. Fumigation is the removal of any small insects, germs, or other pests from a room or other area, with the use of gases or smoke. It is necessary for the pellet to be fumigated so there is nothing growing inside of the pellet that wasn't there when the owl had spit it out. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There would be major changes if the barn owl wasn't part of the food web. There would be many more rodents and other pests in agricultural and forestry land, which would eventually become overpopulated. Bioconcentration is when tiny creatures capture chemicals from debris, which is a large source of diseases, and water which are then devoured by large populations of zooplankton. Larger organisms like my sides then eat the zooplankton, fish feed on the mysids, this continues until the herring which is at the top of this food web. This can causes many diseases to spread over a period of time from one creature to the next and possibly worsen. Bioaccumulation is when the matter of an organism increases in concentration. 9. Owls can be seen as the most threatened of an ecosystem which is threatened by pesticides because it is the highest trophic level in the food web. The higher the trophic level, the higher the concentration of toxins in the species. There may be a tiny bit of pesticide in a plant which is then eaten by a insect which is then eaten by a shrew. The shrew then gets more toxins, then giving the owl which is at the top of the food web the most toxins causing it to become sick and die. Spotted Owl, Flying Squirrel, Truffle Symbiosis Throughout the world there are many animals, plants, fungi and numerous other living organisms that are influenced by the overall condition or adaptations of other organisms. Whether it is a symbiotic relationship or a predator/prey relationship there are many ways in which animals and other living organisms operate and live; both dependent on others and their own adaptations. The point is that there are many relationships that provide a basis and means for the survival of a variety of different species around the world. This relationship is very apparent in the scientific findings regarding northern spotted owls (Strix Occidentalis), flying squirrels (Glaucomys Sabrinus), and truffles, which can include many varieties but especially Tuber ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike many other rodents the flying squirrel does not hibernate. Instead they group together during the winter and cold month's to maintain warmth. Northern flying squirrels usually communicate with a soft low chirp but also cluck just like other squirrels when distressed. These squirrels also use scent and touch to communicate with one another; utilizing their excellent senses of hearing, smell, vision, and touch to correspond with the signals they emanate. "A major food source for the squirrels are mycorrhizal fungi (truffles) of many different species, though they also eat lichens, mushrooms, all mast–crop nuts, tree sap, insects, carrion, bird eggs and nestlings, buds and flowers. The squirrels are special in that they can find truffles by olfaction, which is the use of smell. They also seem to use clues such as the presence of wood debris, indicating a decaying log, and spatial memory of locations where truffles were found in the past. The northern flying squirrel is also known to stash food for when food supplies are lower such as in the winter. These caches can be in cavities in trees, as well as in the squirrels' nest, or even within the ground. Lichens and seeds are the commonly stored items" (9). • 67. Different Characteristics Of Forests, Grasslands And Savannas Grasslands/Savannas Savannas, also known as tropical grasslands, are open spaces where the vegetation is dominated by grass. They are found between forests and deserts, where there is the perfect amount of rainfall in order for this biome to survive. Savannas are located in South America, Africa, India, and Australia. They have warm temperature the whole year, and there are two different seasons, a dry winter that lasts 4–6 months, and a wet summer that lasts 6–8 months. Temperatures in this biome can climb above 90° F during summer. And during winter, it usually falls to 64° F. The average rainfall is from 20–50 inches per year. The dry season begins with violent thunderstorms that create strong winds. These factors often promotes the spread of fires during this season, which causes most animals to migrate to another area; most of the plants begin to die, with the exception of the ones that have underground storage organs to help them survive; and the rivers dry up. However, when the rainy season arrives, many types of grasses grow in the savannas and they easily survive seasonal fires; rivers flow freely; lakes fill up again; and the animals that migrated will come back to the savanna. In order to survive, tropical grasslands need the dry. If it rained all year, the area would become a tropical forest. On the other hand, if it didn't rain at all, then it would become a dessert. In many savannas a combination of seasonal fires and large numbers of grazing animals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author shows great craft in the book, one way she does show craft is in her dialogue. She expresses the character's emotions by adding different words to the dialogue and signs. For example,"I did it!" gasped Soren.(Lasky 164) The author says Soren gaspes instead of he said, also she shows that it is an exciting moment because there is an exclamation point at the end of the talking. The Author also puts song lyrics in the book, this shows craft because it is what the owls like doing when they are happy or praising someone, for example,"What gives a wriggle and makes you giggle when you'em whose weensy little feeling make my heart really beat that makes me feel so jolly for the darling centipede my favorite buggy feed I always want some more that's the insect I adore more than beetles, more than crickets which at times gives me hiccups I crave only to feed on a juicy centipede I shall be happy forever .(Lasky12) This is good author craft because it shows that the owls ike centipedes they made a song to remind them of how it taste and makes them feel. Difficult decisions are made daily, and the compelling idea of satisfaction leads people to make choices for the sake of themselves. The emotions that potentially can happen because of those decisions are captivating, resulting in cruel outcomes. An author that portrays this idea through a character is James Hurst. In his work, "The Scarlet Ibis", Hurst develops a relationship between two brothers using the idea that cruelty ultimately overpowers love. The brothers, Doodle and Brother, experience events that cause them to make valued memories, but also break close bonds. Through these experiences, Brother begins to accept his disabled brother, Doodle, for his limitations. Doodle has to be extremely cautious due to his disability, never letting an emotion or feeling become too strong. Some events lead Brother to show affection towards Doodle, but others prompt him to do just the opposite. Hurst uses Old Woman Swamp and the coffin as symbols in, "The Scarlet Ibis", to assist in demonstrating the highs and lows of Brother and Doodle's volatile relationship. To emphasize the positive, high points of Brother and Doodle's relationship, Hurst utilizes the symbol of Old Woman Swamp, their shared safe haven. This species is migratory through most of its range, breeding in North American and spending the winter south of the border in Mexico. The burrowing owl breeds March through July. The owl nests in a burrow made by other small mammals, and lines the burrow with grasses, feathers, and other natural resources. The owl can lay up to eleven eggs, but usually only lay three to six. The eggs are incubated for about twenty–eight days, and the owlets usually fledge after forty–two days, around September. • 79. Spotted Owl Essay The spotted owls in western North America still exist today, despite being an endangered species. There has been plenty of controversy surrounding the species regarding their habitat because their habitat is desired and used by logging companies. These owls tend to reside in old forests as they prefer old trees which are also preferred for logging. There has been plenty of controversy on whether or not logging companies should be put to a halt in forests that these owls reside in, which involve balancing values of environment and economy. This is mainly due to the fact that logging provides jobs as well as resources to people, despite the fact that it affects the owls and their ecosystem. It is debated whether or not owl's habitat and ecosystem should be protected or not for the sake of logging. Due to unfortunate circumstances, such as logging, the spotted owl's habitat has been declining, thus resulting in the population to also decline. It has been reported that, "there are fewer than 100 pairs of Northern spotted owls in British Columbia, Canada, 1,200 pairs in Oregon, 560 pairs in northern California and 500 pairs in the state of Washington." ("Basic Facts About Northern Spotted Owls" 2012), which demonstrates the the small amount of spotted owls left in parts of western North America. This coincides with the fact that the population is declining five times faster than anticipated under a British Columbia plan. The population has declined rapidly between 1992 to 2001 ...
