How Does Polychlorinated Biphenyls Affect The Environment
Polychlorinated Biphenyl or PCBs is a chlorine based organic compound with the formula of
C12H10−xCLx . Polychlorinated biphenyls was used in many different things such as coolants,
lubricants for transformers, and other electrical equipment. The production of polychlorinated
biphenyls is stopped all together in the united states in the year of 1977 by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA did this due to the buildup of polychlorinated
biphenyls found in the environment. Since Polychlorinated biphenyls have built up in our
environment this means that they must have an affect on the environment. According to the EPA
once polychlorinated biphenyls enter the environment it contaminates our drinking water, our food,

Low Velocity Impact And Impact After Compression Of Cork...
Low Velocity Impact and Impact after Compression in Cork Based Composite material
ABSTRACT:
Experiments are carried out in the investigation to find out the role of cork as an ideal core material,
which is used as a shield plate in the front of land military vehicles to verify the energy absorption
and damage tolerance. Composite materials are used in various industries these days due to its high
strength to weight ratio putting them into light weight applications. Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion
Method is chosen to manufacture the laminate. Specimens are cut according to American Society for
Testing and Materials Standards are used. Low velocity impact is carried out on the specimens to
observe the energy absorption capabilities of the specimens with two different testing variables i.e.,
energy level and amount of the viscoelastic material. Afterwards, Compression after Impact test is
carried out to study the Damage tolerance of the impacted specimen. The study of all the results
from the above tests shows us the energy absorption and damage tolerance with the presence of cork
as a core material. Further studies can be done in different energy levels, different viscoelastic
materials and also different fibres and resins. INTRODUCTION:
Recent years, high modulus and high strength was the main concern of the development of advance
performance of the composite materials. High strength is not only the objective but also the
performance of the material along with ability

Persuasive Essay On Epoxy Floor
Are you tired of that boring old gray concrete in your workshop, garage or rumpus room? Cover it
up and make it look sharp with something that's strong enough to withstand the constant beating that
floors take. Epoxy flooring is one of the most popular finishes for concrete floors. It has been used
for years on industrial floors because of its toughness, durability, and resistance to oil, grease, and
most other chemicals that ruin regular paint. Epoxy seamless is a great idea for industrial workshop,
garage and even for kid's bedroom floor to cover dull, gray concrete and give you protected,
attractive, easy to clean surfaces. Epoxy flooring prevents stains and helps maintain a strong
concrete surface. Seamless epoxy flooring will also greatly reduce the need for floor repairs and at
the same time, epoxy flooring provides a stunningly attractive, polished look to your floors. Clean
and Coat Brisbane offers a 15 year guarantee on all their epoxy flooring work, and that's 15 years
for the epoxy... So that also promises a minimum of 15 year's improvement to the lifespan of your

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Composites In Oil Industry
COMPOSITES IN OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY
Composite materials are multiphase materials obtained through the artificial combination of
different materials in order to attain properties that the individual components by themselves cannot
attain. They are not multiphase materials in which the different phases are formed naturally by
reactions, phase transformations, or other phenomena. An example is carbon fiber reinforced
polymer. Composite materials should be distinguished from alloys, which can comprise two more
components but are formed naturally through processes such as casting. Composite materials can be
tailored for various properties by appropriately choosing their components, their proportions, their
distributions, their morphologies, their degrees of crystallinity, their crystallographic textures, as
well as the structure and composition of the interface between components. Due to this strong tailor
ability, composite materials can be designed to satisfy the needs of ... Show more content on

Due to the use of them, mass of construction is reduced up to 80%. Composites are already greatly
used for the production of pipe systems for fluid transport, pressure vessels, drill pipes and their
couplings, tanks for fluid storage, risers, pipes for "coiled drilling" installations, partitions on
platforms for the protection against fire etc. Basic advantages of the use of composite materials
when compared to conventional material which is steel, are reduction of mass of primary and
secondary constructions, introduction of new technologies (for example installation of conducting
infrastructures into drill pipes), better physical and chemical characteristics (corrosion resistance,
buckling strength), longer life time of the construction (for example within 25 years carbon fibers
lose 2–10% of initial strength), easy installation of the construction, higher safety at work, and

MILAN MOHANTY INTERNAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AT THE DOW CHEMICAL
COMPANY Overview:– The Dow Chemical Company is the second largest chemical manufacturer
in the world in terms of revenue and in terms of market capitalization; it is the third largest in the
world (as of 20071). There was a steady growth of the market from the year 2002. But before that
the company faced a back drop in the profit margin. The company realized its growth in 2002 only
after merging with Union Carbi as the company's sells rose to $27.8 billion. Back in 1998, the
company faced the real down turn of the sale to $18.4 billion. Then, for 4 years continuously, the
company managed to keep the sales around $20 billion. In the year 2000, the company planned to

strength of the company. His crystal clear goals and visions for the company established an efficient
procedure for the development of the company and his enthusiasm and the hunger for success
motivated its employees for a better team work with success keeping in mind. He was flexible with
his concepts and the strategy so that he can react as per the situation, which helped him to overcome
the hurdles which came in the way of his success. Weakness: * The company has to suffer
economical loss due to its cyclic nature of production. The production does not run at full efficiency
every time. This leads to the waste of energy, money and resources. * There was no transparency in
the price of EP&I products which can act as a hindrance in the market. No transparency of the
price can lead to a bad market status and thus leading to a heavy decline in the efficiency. * The
attitude and behavior of Ian may not be a big concern for the development of the company but it can
degrade the motivation which can degrade the strength and unity of the employees in the company.
This can lead to downturn of efficiency and shows the sign of immaturity. Opportunity: * The

Introduction
Composites, is a material that made with two or more different material. People can see or use it
anytime, anywhere. Composite materials can provide different advantages from mixing different
materials, and usually combined metal (aluminum), polymers (epoxy) or ceramic (silicon). One of
the most common example for the composites will be fishing rod. Nowadays fishing rod usually
make with glass fiber/ carbon fiber and epoxy. Which glass fiber or carbon fiber are brittle but
strong, and epoxy can provide a high mechanical properties. Result of the fishing rod can be have a
better toughness, and lightweight. Because of that in this lab, the main objective is going to use the
optical microscopy and find out the fiber's alignment, the structure pattern and the mechanical
properties from the fishing rod.
Experiment:
In this lab, we were required to test multiple samples of the fishing rod, which they were already
polished. First we have to set up the computer

Remove The Rotted Wood
If you have noticed that the wood around one of your window frames has become soft to the touch,
the wood around your window is rotting. Unfortunately, once the wood starts rotting, you can't stop
the process. However, you can patch the wood and allow yourself some time to save up to replace
the frame. Remove The Rotted Wood The first thing you are going to need to do is remove the rotted
wood from the window frame. In order to remove the rotted wood, you are going to need a chisel, a
knife and small paintbrush. Take the chisel and use it to slowly chip away at the rotting wood. You
should be able to easily chip away all the soft wood without putting too much pressure on the chisel.
If there are any areas that you are having a difficult time chiseling away, you can use the knife to cut
away those areas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Most wood hardeners come with their own application brush; if your does not, you may want to
purchase a paintbrush that is at least an inch wide to use for the application process. Use the
applicator or your paintbrush to apply the wood hardener to the area that you chiseled. You'll want to
make sure that you saturate all of the wood inside of the hole and around the hole. Let the wood
hardener set and dry according to the directions on the package. Apply An Epoxy Resin Once the
wood hardener has set, you are going to want to fill in the hole with epoxy resin in order to prevent
further rotting as much as possible, and to keep your window frame as stable and strong as

Environmental Impact Of Plastics
In order to comprehend the environmental impact of plastic, it is important to understand the
journey plastic takes from the time one throws it away, to the time it ends up in the vast unknown.
The first place most plastic travels to after being disposed of is a landfill. It can sit in these ever
expanding landfills for up to 1,000 years before it's able to decompose. During the time plastic lives
there, rain water periodically floods through the waste, getting absorbed by the plastic's water–
soluble compounds. Some of these compounds are highly toxic, and when combined together, they
create a more harmful compound called leachate. This liquid is often times absorbed by the ground
below, draining through and into other soil, into groundwater, and into streams. As a consequence,
the ecosystems and wildlife touched by leachate are polluted and poisoned. Other plastic that doesn't
end up in landfills after use is instead sent through our waterways into our ocean. A 2015 study by
the journal Science reported that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans each year. After
arriving to the ocean, plastic spends its first few months floating around until it is carried into a
massive vortex of accumulated trash. There are five of these plastic–debris vortexes, called gyres,
located around the world: The North Atlantic Gyre, The South Atlantic Gyre, The Indian Ocean
Gyre, The Great North Pacific Gyre, and The South Pacific Gyre. Plastic is trapped in the currents
of these gyres,

Epoxy is a kind of polymer material that starts like a liquid and it is transformed into a good
condition via a controlled chemical reaction. Due to this transformation in condition, epoxy floor
films are usually a robotically strong and chemically resistant kind of flooring. Epoxy floor films are
highly adhesive throughout the conversion from liquid to solid permitting them to produce a secure
bond with old and new concrete flooring surfaces. You will find a multitude of programs and ways
to use epoxy films including epoxy floor fresh paint in industrial and commercial configurations too

Mechanical Properties And Thermal Analysis
Composite structure is a combination of two or more different items that may be distinguished
physically, resulting in a final product that has a better performance from each component
individually done. It consists of matrix composite materials (polymer, metal or ceramic) and one or
more stages of reinforcement (fibers, particles, flakes, or fillers). The combination of the different
elements appropriately to achieve a system with structural or functional characteristics of the best
that can be achieved through one of the components alone. The vehicle has become an essential part
of the day because of the material advantages such as low weight, high corrosion resistance, high
strength and fatigue, and faster assembly. Used widely as raw materials in the airframe industry,
packaging, electronics, medical equipment and spacecraft building materials home [1].
The increased use of composite materials for various applications underlines its importance /
significance in mechanical properties and thermal analysis of an engineering system. The thermal
conductivity of a composite material (combination of two or more components) can be measured by
experimental methods. Analytical equations are essential to predict the thermal conductivity of a
composite material. The main advantage of using filler material in composites is to reduce the
overall cost of the composite. Besides reducing costs, filling materials are also used as a main
ingredient, which improves the performance of the

The Pros And Cons Of Froth Surf Board Spaces
At the center of each surfboard is some kind of froth, that is referred to in the business as a clear.
Froth surf board spaces will decide numerous things around a surf board, including its last shape,

The Weight Reduction Of The Drive Shaft
Abstract – Almost all automobiles (at least those which correspond to design with rear wheel drive
and front engine installation) have transmission shafts. The weight reduction of the drive shaft can
have a certain role in the general weight reduction of the vehicle and is a highly desirable goal, if it
can be achieved without increase in cost and decrease in quality and reliability. It is possible to
achieve design of composite drive shaft with less weight to increase the first natural frequency of the
shaft and to decrease the bending stresses using various stacking sequences. By doing the same,
maximize the torque transmission and torsional buckling capabilities are also maximized.
Key Words: Propeller shaft, Drive shaft, optimization, Composite material, Composite drive shaft

How A Polymer Is Important Class Of Reinforcement
1.INTRODUCTION
"A combination of two or more materials (reinforcement, resin, filler, etc),differing in form or
composition on a macro scale". They usually consist of high performance fibres as reinforcing
phases and polymers or metals as matrices.
Generally two phases of composite they are matrix phase and reinforcement phase or dispersed
phase. Matrix is the primary phase, having a continuous character, and its usually more ductile and
less hard phase, it hold the dispersed phase and shares a load with it another one is reinforced phase
is embedded in the matrix in a discontinuous form. This secondary phase is dispersed phase .it
usually stronger then the matrix therefore it is sometimes act reinforcement phase.
Composition of fibres reinforced composite the fibres are important class of reinforcement, as they
satisfy the desired conditions and transfer strength to the matrix constituent influencing and
enhancing their properties as desire.
A polymer is defined as a long chain molecule containing one or more repeating units of atoms
joined together by strong covalent bonds. A polymeric material is a collection of a large number of
polymer molecules of similar chemical structure . matrix rein which provide the continuous phase of

Garage Floor
More often than not, the garage floor is the last thing that comes to mind when we decide on home
renovation projects. But given how much the garage is used for storing lawn mowers, automobiles
and even offering a great place for kids to play in bad weather, using the correct option of garage

garage with oil, grease and other liquid stains, extend the life of the floor and make it much easier to
maintain the garage by coating the permeable surface. Garage floors are usually concrete and not
simply any paint can be used successfully on this surface. Success with this project will require
selecting the best quality paint for the garage floor and appropriately setting up the floor for the
application of paint. The first step, which is the most difficult in garage floor painting, is the
removal of everything to leave the whole floor vacant. This is when you will realize how much you

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Thermoset Epoxy Resins
Polymer composites are assuring in Mechanical and Tribological application due to the possibility
of tailoring their properties. These polymer composites have observed in application such as
automotive, aerospace and sports equipment industries. When we compared to most metals and
unreinforced plastics, this offer a high strength, corrosion resistant, durable and can be fabricated
into complex shapes. Major advantages of composite materials are that they can be tailored to meet
the specific needs of the structure, determined by reinforcement and matrix in proper way and also
these composites have been used in vehicle industries about more than 50%, this is the main reason

Thermoset epoxy resins are extensively studied as a matrix material for composite structure as well
as aerospace application because they exhibit low shrinkage and higher mechanical properties.
There is a need for developing high wear resistance and materials that would sustain to meet the
conditions of mechanical systems with long life. Achieving and maintain high wear resistances have
been very difficult in past and still challenging problems in field of tribology.
1.2 Characteristics of the Composites
A composite material as a structural material created synthetically or artificially by combining two
or more materials. Two materials makes together to give the composite unequal properties, one
material is known as reinforcing phase, and these are in the form of fibers, sheets or particles, and is
fixed or attach to the other material called matrix phase.
The objective of composite materials is to take advantage of the superior properties of both
materials. Industry has identified the ability of composite material to produce high strength, high
corrosive environment, and high durable as well as cost effective products.

Introduction: In order to conserve natural resources and economize energy, weight reduction has
been the main focus of automobile manufacturers. Weight reduction can be achieved primarily by
the introduction of better material, design optimization and better manufacturing processes. The
achievement of weight reduction with adequate improvement of mechanical properties has made
composite a very good replacement material for conventional steel. A composite is composed of a
high performance fibers such as carbon, Kevlar, graphite or glass in a matrix material that when
combined provides better properties compared with the individual materials by themselves. The
composite materials are used in structural application areas, such as in aircraft, space, automotive,
for sporting goods, and marine engineering. The various type of glass fibers available are Carbon
fiber, C–glass, S–glass and E–glass. However, carbon epoxy material is better than other fibers but
because of its high cost, it has limited applications. Favorable relation between cost and properties
of a material can be obtained with E–glass fiber/epoxy. The major step of composite in automotive
business is extension of use in to truly structural application such as primary body structure and to
chassis and suspension system. These are the area which has to sustain all major road load

1.1. INTRODUCTION
"Better the properties, greater will be the applicability." A single material can't provide the all
expected properties for a particular application, at its isotropic level, carrying single homogenous
phase. So, in order to get identified properties for any particular application, we may require
composing the material in such a way, so that we can achieve the producible properties for desired
application. This composed form of two or more than two material is termed as "composite".
Composite is introductorily the micromechanical aspect of two or more combined materials. In
broad sense, a "composite is a materials system, composed of two or more physically distinct phase

Cut And Chip Test Testing
Cut–and–Chip Test
Ohio Northern University
May, 2016 – July, 2016
Background: Cut–and–chip is a phenomena in tires that manifests itself primarily from prolonged
off–road use. As the tires are used off–road, the tread compound will be cut by rocks and eventually
large pieces of the tread rubber are chipped off. Current tests involve manufacturing a series of test
tires and sending them to a test track in Texas. The tires are then run on a controlled gravel road.
Each set of tires is run for 1000 miles, 500 each day for two days. In each set of 500 miles, 100
miles are on flint rock and 400 miles are on the highway. The tires are then ranked visually by
multiple engineers to determine which rubber compounds demonstrate the best cut–and–chip
resistance. Thus, current testing is expensive, time–intensive, and subjective. Students at Ohio
Northern University therefore built a tester that can use a lab test for tread rubber compounds.
Cooper will be able to save time and money by testing much fewer compounds with the road test.
However, although this tester is a very successful design, the cut–and–chip lab test using this tester
is a brand new idea that has never been done by any engineers, as we know. Therefore, a summer
intern project was created to investigate the usage of the tester and the cut–and–chip lab test. It
should be noted that the investigation is a proof of concept study that many trials have to be
performed to use the lab test for tread rubber compounds to

The specimen ends were not thick or had moving wedge grips to keep it secure in the holders of the

to be an inaccuracy. Also, the transverse strain causes issues with the strain gages that are called
transverse sensitivity. The transverse sensitivity affects the accuracy of the data that is being
collected for the transverse strain more than the longitudinal strain. This is greatly seen in the
percent difference in the strain values such as in one case the Longitudinal strain was .4% while the
transverse strain was 30%. Another issue with the strain gages was that if the strain gages weren't

The History Of Nanocomposites During World War II
The History of Nanocomposites Before the use of nanocomposites, humans have used natural
composites to improve their welfare and way of life throughout history. The Mesopotamians would
use natural adhesive to glue wood pieces in different ways to make plywood. Archaeologists have
found multiple natural composites used by ancient civilizations, but one of the most prevalent was
the use of straw. Utilizing straw allowed these civilizations to increase the strength of their building
bricks, thus making there shelters stronger. This is how natural composites were first used by early
humans. In the 1930s, numerous synthetic composite technological breakthroughs were born. "In
1935, Owens Corning launched the fiber reinforce polymer (FRP) industry by introducing the first
fiber glass. In 1936, unsaturated polyester resins were patented. Because of their curing properties,
they would become the dominant choice for resins in manufacturing today. In 1938, other higher
performance resin systems like epoxies also became available." (Cite) The creation of FRP was vital
to the military during World War II due to its notably high to strength to weight ratio. Not only was
FRP used for electronic housings and other electronic components, but was also used to create the
first fiberglass reinforced boat hull. The war efforts spawned copious amounts of commercial
products made with FRP. This is how synthetic and natural composites were revolutionized during
the 20th century. A

technological advancement of the clutch has had very little impact on clutch facing technology.
Earlier asbestos was used as friction material in single plate dry friction clutch. Asbestos is
hazardous to human health and detrimental to environment. So recently kevlar49/Epoxy material is

Clutch Facing Clutch facing is the heart of clutch assembly which actually transmits power from
engine to transmission or drive shaft. It is a friction surface which binds face plate of fly wheel and
pressure plate of clutch assembly. A major benefit to using a lining or facing is that it prevents
metal–to–metal contact within the clutch set, resulting in less wear and tear on the clutch
components. Clutch facings tend to have mid–level coefficients of friction, and are responsible for
removing most of the clutch vibrations from the engine. They also aid in allowing engines to
achieve high speeds without damaging the components. Fig.1 Clutch Facing 3. Desirable

Critical thrust force Analysis in Machining of GFRP with Coconut fillers using Jodrill
Abstract: Ever increasing pressure on industry to reduce costs and ecological need of the hour forms
the basis of the present research endeavor. Coconut coir is abundantly available in India as a bio–
waste. Naturally available coconut fibers in their original form have been used as fillers in glass
fiber reinforced epoxy composites. Thrust force being an important parameter in drilling induced
damage has been analyzed during drilling of the fabricated composites at four different spindle
speeds and three feed rates. Thrust force generally reduced with increase in spindle speed but
increased rapidly with feed. Stepped increase in thrust force was observed while analyzing thrust
force signals due to geometry of Jodrill.
Keywords: Glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminates, Coconut fillers, Thrust Force
1. Introduction: It has been well established that drilling of FRP's lead to drilling induced damage
thus reducing component's life and reliability. Thrust force induced in drilling of FRPs is one of the
major reasons for drilling induced damage [1]. Several studies have been made worldwide to
critically review the delamination induced in drilling of FRPs. These research efforts clearly indicate
direct relationship of damage induced with thrust force induced during drilling of FRPs [2–6].

Scorching A Laminate Kitchen Counter
Laminate kitchen counters are easy to burn or scorch with a hot pan. To avoid damaging your
kitchen counter top, you should always use a trivet. However, if an accident does occur, you can try
a few different methods to fix the burn on a laminate kitchen counter. Step 1: Create a paste with
baking soda and water. Use steel wool to work the paste into the burned area, and lift the stain. TIP:
If a baking soda paste will not lift the stain on the counter, try using Ajax or Comet and water to
create a paste to attempt to lift the stain. Step 2: Use a sponge and water to remove the paste after
you have finished scrubbing. Dry the area with a rag. Step 3: Buff the kitchen with carnuaba wax to
provide a small layer of protection and restore shine to the area. TIP: If your laminate ... Show more

Sometimes you won't be able to buff the burn spot away. The pan could have burned through the
layer of laminate, making a serious mark that will not be able to be fixed by removing the burn
marks. Step 1: Fill the depression in the kitchen counter top left by the burn with two part epoxy and
a metal putty knife. Clean the knife immediately after use. Allow the epoxy to harden for the full
time recommended by the manufacturer before continuing. TIP: Only mix enough two part epoxy
for the job, paying particular attention to the required proportions. Once mixed two part epoxy must
be used within 20 minutes: a chemical reaction, not outside air, is responsible for epoxy hardening.
Step 2: Sand the area with a fine grit sandpaper to remove any rough patches. Use a tack cloth or
soft cloth to remove any dust that was a result of the sanding. Step 3: Apply laminate sealant to the
surface of the epoxy patch and the surrounding kitchen counter to blend the sealant. TIP: If your
kitchen counter appears to be a bit worn, clean the rest of the kitchen counter thoroughly, then apply
laminate sealant to the entire surface. The sealant should restore the shine to the entire kitchen

Various methods are utilized to modify epoxy resins to improve their toughness. Based on the
structure–property relationships, the traditional chemistry approaches have been: chemical
modification of a given rigid epoxy backbone to a more flexible backbone structure; lowering the
crosslink density by increasing the molecular weight of the epoxy monomers and/or decreasing the
functionality of the curing agents. The most common approaches are the incorporation of dispersed
toughener phase(s) in the cured epoxy matrix. The second phase includes rubbers, thermoplastics,
block copolymers and hard inclusions such as silica, glass beads, etc.

Another reason is the low glass transition temperatures of the rubbers that lower the maximum use
temperature and the modulus of the epoxy resins. The high performance engineering thermoplastics
such as poly(ether sulfone)s, poly(ether ketone)s and poly(ether imide)s were used as toughener for
epoxy resins [34–36]. The major advantage of these thermoplastic modifiers is that their
incorporation into epoxy resins does not result in reduction in modulus and glass transition
temperature. In comparison with rubber modified systems, the use of tough thermoplastic polymers
offers better improvement in fracture toughness for higher crosslink density epoxy systems. The
advantages of thermoplastic modified epoxy systems lie in the fact that the modulus and the Tg of
the modified epoxy can be maintained, and the fracture toughness can be improved in direct
proportion to the amount of thermoplastic added. The use of reactive thermoplastic modifiers
provides good adhesion between epoxy and thermoplastic phases. Several toughening mechanisms

Characterizing The Structure Of Composite Material
Characterizing the structure of composite material in a fishing rod
Muad Saleh
Abstract
This report introduces the dependence of the mechanical properties of a fishing rod made from
glass–reinforced epoxy on the orientation, morphology, and volume fraction of the fibers used in
making the rod. This has been achieved by studying the surface of multiple cross–sections of the
fishing rod that are mounted on epoxy by using optical microscopes. Then through analyzing
different cross section, the mechanical properties of the studied fishing rod have been linked to
orientation, size, shape, and volume fraction of the fibers.

The fiber phase is usually made from materials that are usually stronger and have a higher modulus
of elasticity than that of the matrix, but they are often very brittle [2]. Therefore, the matrix phase is
usually the source of the composites' ductility, whereas the fiber is the source of its strength.
Furthermore, composited have a wider range of properties than the other types of material; thus,
they are used in more application. For instance, the material used in fishing poles should have a high
tensile and compressive strengths, and a high modulus of elasticity, as that they are subject to high
stresses, which they need to withstand without failing or going through much plastic deformation.
Moreover, fishing poles have to be ductile and flexible, as that they should have the ability to bend.
Such properties cannot often be achieved by using a single type of material; however, those
properties can be found in different composites. According to Philips [3], fishing rods are commonly
made of fibers glass or carbon embedded in a matrix of epoxy or lignin.
Because of the unlimited number of matrix/ fiber combinations that can be used to form composites,
and the great number of variables that can be controlled in composite materials, composites can
attain a wide range of mechanical properties. For instance, the mechanical properties depend on the
properties of both the matrix and the fiber phases; as that, the

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Composites
The attraction of composites primarily stems from their ability to replace standard lightweight/high
strength metals or wood with an even lightweight/higher strength alternatively. Additionally,
composites offer new design flexibilities, improved corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal
conductivity and increase fatigue life.
Advantages of using composite material are:
 Composites can provide a specific modulus (ratio of material stiffness to density) that is three and
half to five times greater than steel or aluminum.
 The fatigue endurance limit is much higher than for steel or aluminum.
 Composites can provide a specific tensile strength (ratio of material stiffness to density) that is
approximately four to six times greater than steel or aluminum.
 Toughened composites can give impact energies significantly higher than aluminum alloys.
 The potential for corrosion is significantly reduced.
 Design flexibility is greater and can allow for physical property directionality in parts where
desired.

How Does Polychlorinated Biphenyls Affect The Environment

  • 1. How Does Polychlorinated Biphenyls Affect The Environment Polychlorinated Biphenyl or PCBs is a chlorine based organic compound with the formula of C12H10−xCLx . Polychlorinated biphenyls was used in many different things such as coolants, lubricants for transformers, and other electrical equipment. The production of polychlorinated biphenyls is stopped all together in the united states in the year of 1977 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA did this due to the buildup of polychlorinated biphenyls found in the environment. • 5. Low Velocity Impact And Impact After Compression Of Cork... Low Velocity Impact and Impact after Compression in Cork Based Composite material ABSTRACT: Experiments are carried out in the investigation to find out the role of cork as an ideal core material, which is used as a shield plate in the front of land military vehicles to verify the energy absorption and damage tolerance. Composite materials are used in various industries these days due to its high strength to weight ratio putting them into light weight applications. Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Method is chosen to manufacture the laminate. Specimens are cut according to American Society for Testing and Materials Standards are used. Low velocity impact is carried out on the specimens to observe the energy absorption capabilities of the specimens with two different testing variables i.e., energy level and amount of the viscoelastic material. Afterwards, Compression after Impact test is carried out to study the Damage tolerance of the impacted specimen. The study of all the results from the above tests shows us the energy absorption and damage tolerance with the presence of cork as a core material. Further studies can be done in different energy levels, different viscoelastic materials and also different fibres and resins. INTRODUCTION: Recent years, high modulus and high strength was the main concern of the development of advance performance of the composite materials. High strength is not only the objective but also the performance of the material along with ability ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Composites In Oil Industry COMPOSITES IN OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY Composite materials are multiphase materials obtained through the artificial combination of different materials in order to attain properties that the individual components by themselves cannot attain. They are not multiphase materials in which the different phases are formed naturally by reactions, phase transformations, or other phenomena. An example is carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Composite materials should be distinguished from alloys, which can comprise two more components but are formed naturally through processes such as casting. Composite materials can be tailored for various properties by appropriately choosing their components, their proportions, their distributions, their morphologies, their degrees of crystallinity, their crystallographic textures, as well as the structure and composition of the interface between components. Due to this strong tailor ability, composite materials can be designed to satisfy the needs of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the use of them, mass of construction is reduced up to 80%. Composites are already greatly used for the production of pipe systems for fluid transport, pressure vessels, drill pipes and their couplings, tanks for fluid storage, risers, pipes for "coiled drilling" installations, partitions on platforms for the protection against fire etc. Basic advantages of the use of composite materials when compared to conventional material which is steel, are reduction of mass of primary and secondary constructions, introduction of new technologies (for example installation of conducting infrastructures into drill pipes), better physical and chemical characteristics (corrosion resistance, buckling strength), longer life time of the construction (for example within 25 years carbon fibers lose 2–10% of initial strength), easy installation of the construction, higher safety at work, and minimum ... MILAN MOHANTY INTERNAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AT THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY Overview:– The Dow Chemical Company is the second largest chemical manufacturer in the world in terms of revenue and in terms of market capitalization; it is the third largest in the world (as of 20071). There was a steady growth of the market from the year 2002. But before that the company faced a back drop in the profit margin. The company realized its growth in 2002 only after merging with Union Carbi as the company's sells rose to $27.8 billion. Back in 1998, the company faced the real down turn of the sale to $18.4 billion. Then, for 4 years continuously, the company managed to keep the sales around $20 billion. In the year 2000, the company planned to adopt a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... * Ian Telford, the European sales Director for EP&I can be considered as major pillar for the strength of the company. His crystal clear goals and visions for the company established an efficient procedure for the development of the company and his enthusiasm and the hunger for success motivated its employees for a better team work with success keeping in mind. He was flexible with his concepts and the strategy so that he can react as per the situation, which helped him to overcome the hurdles which came in the way of his success. Weakness: * The company has to suffer economical loss due to its cyclic nature of production. The production does not run at full efficiency every time. This leads to the waste of energy, money and resources. * There was no transparency in the price of EP&I products which can act as a hindrance in the market. No transparency of the price can lead to a bad market status and thus leading to a heavy decline in the efficiency. * The attitude and behavior of Ian may not be a big concern for the development of the company but it can degrade the motivation which can degrade the strength and unity of the employees in the company. This can lead to downturn of efficiency and shows the sign of immaturity. Opportunity: * The management should consider a group of customers who solely wants product at low cost rather than consignment or service. * The management should take ... Environmental Impact Of Plastics In order to comprehend the environmental impact of plastic, it is important to understand the journey plastic takes from the time one throws it away, to the time it ends up in the vast unknown. The first place most plastic travels to after being disposed of is a landfill. It can sit in these ever expanding landfills for up to 1,000 years before it's able to decompose. During the time plastic lives there, rain water periodically floods through the waste, getting absorbed by the plastic's water– soluble compounds. Some of these compounds are highly toxic, and when combined together, they create a more harmful compound called leachate. This liquid is often times absorbed by the ground below, draining through and into other soil, into groundwater, and into streams. As a consequence, the ecosystems and wildlife touched by leachate are polluted and poisoned. Other plastic that doesn't end up in landfills after use is instead sent through our waterways into our ocean. A 2015 study by the journal Science reported that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans each year. After arriving to the ocean, plastic spends its first few months floating around until it is carried into a massive vortex of accumulated trash. There are five of these plastic–debris vortexes, called gyres, located around the world: The North Atlantic Gyre, The South Atlantic Gyre, The Indian Ocean Gyre, The Great North Pacific Gyre, and The South Pacific Gyre. • 98. Cut And Chip Test Testing Cut–and–Chip Test Ohio Northern University May, 2016 – July, 2016 Background: Cut–and–chip is a phenomena in tires that manifests itself primarily from prolonged off–road use. As the tires are used off–road, the tread compound will be cut by rocks and eventually large pieces of the tread rubber are chipped off. Current tests involve manufacturing a series of test tires and sending them to a test track in Texas. The tires are then run on a controlled gravel road. Each set of tires is run for 1000 miles, 500 each day for two days. In each set of 500 miles, 100 miles are on flint rock and 400 miles are on the highway. The tires are then ranked visually by multiple engineers to determine which rubber compounds demonstrate the best cut–and–chip resistance. Thus, current testing is expensive, time–intensive, and subjective. Students at Ohio Northern University therefore built a tester that can use a lab test for tread rubber compounds. Cooper will be able to save time and money by testing much fewer compounds with the road test. However, although this tester is a very successful design, the cut–and–chip lab test using this tester is a brand new idea that has never been done by any engineers, as we know. Therefore, a summer intern project was created to investigate the usage of the tester and the cut–and–chip lab test. It should be noted that the investigation is a proof of concept study that many trials have to be performed to use the lab test for tread rubber compounds to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the strain gages, evidence can support how and when the specimen material failed under the stress being applied to it. The test was run for three times on three different specimens. The first specimen that was tested in the hydraulic load was the 0°/90° specimen, which is made of carbon and epoxy laminate composite. The 0°/90° specimen was tested first out of the three ... The transverse sensitivity affects the accuracy of the data that is being collected for the transverse strain more than the longitudinal strain. This is greatly seen in the percent difference in the strain values such as in one case the Longitudinal strain was .4% while the transverse strain was 30%. The History Of Nanocomposites During World War II The History of Nanocomposites Before the use of nanocomposites, humans have used natural composites to improve their welfare and way of life throughout history. The Mesopotamians would use natural adhesive to glue wood pieces in different ways to make plywood. Archaeologists have found multiple natural composites used by ancient civilizations, but one of the most prevalent was the use of straw. Utilizing straw allowed these civilizations to increase the strength of their building bricks, thus making there shelters stronger. This is how natural composites were first used by early humans. In the 1930s, numerous synthetic composite technological breakthroughs were born. "In 1935, Owens Corning launched the fiber reinforce polymer (FRP) industry by introducing the first fiber glass. In 1936, unsaturated polyester resins were patented. Because of their curing properties, they would become the dominant choice for resins in manufacturing today. In 1938, other higher performance resin systems like epoxies also became available." (Cite) The creation of FRP was vital to the military during World War II due to its notably high to strength to weight ratio. Not only was FRP used for electronic housings and other electronic components, but was also used to create the first fiberglass reinforced boat hull. The war efforts spawned copious amounts of commercial products made with FRP. This is how synthetic and natural composites were revolutionized during the 20th century. A ... Advantages And Disadvantages Of Clutch COMPARISON OF MECHANICAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF CLUTCH FACINGS MADE UP OF KEVLAR49/EPOXY RESINE AND BIODEGRADABLE COCONUT SHELL/COIR/EPOXY RESINE COMPOSITE MATERIALS Dr. K.Arunachalam, Department of Automobile Engineering, Associate Professor, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai G.Sundara pandian, PG Student, Department of Automobile Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai Abstract Looking back at the history of the clutch facing, it becomes apparent that the technological advancement of the clutch has had very little impact on clutch facing technology. Earlier asbestos was used as friction material in single plate dry friction clutch. Asbestos is hazardous to human health and detrimental to environment. So recently kevlar49/Epoxy material is used as friction material. But it has its own disadvantages. So it is time to consider use of any other environment friendly and non–hazardous friction material as clutch facing material. One option is to use Natural Fibre / Epoxy resine composite as new ... It is a friction surface which binds face plate of fly wheel and pressure plate of clutch assembly. A major benefit to using a lining or facing is that it prevents metal–to–metal contact within the clutch set, resulting in less wear and tear on the clutch components. Clutch facings tend to have mid–level coefficients of friction, and are responsible for removing most of the clutch vibrations from the engine. They also aid in allowing engines to achieve high speeds without damaging the components. Fig.1 Clutch Facing 3. Critical thrust force Analysis in Machining of GFRP with Coconut fillers using Jodrill Abstract: Ever increasing pressure on industry to reduce costs and ecological need of the hour forms the basis of the present research endeavor. Coconut coir is abundantly available in India as a bio– waste. Naturally available coconut fibers in their original form have been used as fillers in glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites. Thrust force being an important parameter in drilling induced damage has been analyzed during drilling of the fabricated composites at four different spindle speeds and three feed rates. Thrust force generally reduced with increase in spindle speed but increased rapidly with feed. Stepped increase in thrust force was observed while analyzing thrust force signals due to geometry of Jodrill. Keywords: Glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminates, Coconut fillers, Thrust Force 1. Introduction: It has been well established that drilling of FRP's lead to drilling induced damage thus reducing component's life and reliability. Thrust force induced in drilling of FRPs is one of the major reasons for drilling induced damage [1]. Several studies have been made worldwide to critically review the delamination induced in drilling of FRPs. These research efforts clearly indicate direct relationship of damage induced with thrust force induced during drilling of FRPs [2–6]. However, if an accident does occur, you can try a few different methods to fix the burn on a laminate kitchen counter. Step 1: Create a paste with baking soda and water. Use steel wool to work the paste into the burned area, and lift the stain. TIP: If a baking soda paste will not lift the stain on the counter, try using Ajax or Comet and water to create a paste to attempt to lift the stain. Step 2: Use a sponge and water to remove the paste after you have finished scrubbing. Dry the area with a rag. Step 3: Buff the kitchen with carnuaba wax to provide a small layer of protection and restore shine to the area. TIP: If your laminate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Allow the epoxy to harden for the full time recommended by the manufacturer before continuing. TIP: Only mix enough two part epoxy for the job, paying particular attention to the required proportions. Once mixed two part epoxy must be used within 20 minutes: a chemical reaction, not outside air, is responsible for epoxy hardening. Step 2: Sand the area with a fine grit sandpaper to remove any rough patches. Use a tack cloth or soft cloth to remove any dust that was a result of the sanding. Step 3: Apply laminate sealant to the surface of the epoxy patch and the surrounding kitchen counter to blend the sealant. TIP: If your kitchen counter appears to be a bit worn, clean the rest of the kitchen counter thoroughly, then apply laminate sealant to the entire surface. Based on the structure–property relationships, the traditional chemistry approaches have been: chemical modification of a given rigid epoxy backbone to a more flexible backbone structure; lowering the crosslink density by increasing the molecular weight of the epoxy monomers and/or decreasing the functionality of the curing agents. The most common approaches are the incorporation of dispersed toughener phase(s) in the cured epoxy matrix. The second phase includes rubbers, thermoplastics, block copolymers and hard inclusions such as silica, glass beads, etc. 1.2.1 Modification by Rubber A common method employed in improving the fracture resistance of epoxies is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another reason is the low glass transition temperatures of the rubbers that lower the maximum use temperature and the modulus of the epoxy resins. The high performance engineering thermoplastics such as poly(ether sulfone)s, poly(ether ketone)s and poly(ether imide)s were used as toughener for epoxy resins [34–36]. The major advantage of these thermoplastic modifiers is that their incorporation into epoxy resins does not result in reduction in modulus and glass transition temperature. In comparison with rubber modified systems, the use of tough thermoplastic polymers offers better improvement in fracture toughness for higher crosslink density epoxy systems. The advantages of thermoplastic modified epoxy systems lie in the fact that the modulus and the Tg of the modified epoxy can be maintained, and the fracture toughness can be improved in direct proportion to the amount of thermoplastic added. The use of reactive thermoplastic modifiers provides good adhesion between epoxy and thermoplastic phases. Characterizing The Structure Of Composite Material Characterizing the structure of composite material in a fishing rod Muad Saleh Abstract This report introduces the dependence of the mechanical properties of a fishing rod made from glass–reinforced epoxy on the orientation, morphology, and volume fraction of the fibers used in making the rod. This has been achieved by studying the surface of multiple cross–sections of the fishing rod that are mounted on epoxy by using optical microscopes. Then through analyzing different cross section, the mechanical properties of the studied fishing rod have been linked to orientation, size, shape, and volume fraction of the fibers. The fiber phase is usually made from materials that are usually stronger and have a higher modulus of elasticity than that of the matrix, but they are often very brittle [2]. Therefore, the matrix phase is usually the source of the composites' ductility, whereas the fiber is the source of its strength. Furthermore, composited have a wider range of properties than the other types of material; thus, they are used in more application. For instance, the material used in fishing poles should have a high tensile and compressive strengths, and a high modulus of elasticity, as that they are subject to high stresses, which they need to withstand without failing or going through much plastic deformation. Moreover, fishing poles have to be ductile and flexible, as that they should have the ability to bend. Such properties cannot often be achieved by using a single type of material; however, those properties can be found in different composites. According to Philips [3], fishing rods are commonly made of fibers glass or carbon embedded in a matrix of epoxy or lignin. Because of the unlimited number of matrix/ fiber combinations that can be used to form composites, and the great number of variables that can be controlled in composite materials, composites can attain a wide range of mechanical properties. For instance, the mechanical properties depend on the properties of both the matrix and the fiber phases; as that, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Composites The attraction of composites primarily stems from their ability to replace standard lightweight/high strength metals or wood with an even lightweight/higher strength alternatively. Additionally, composites offer new design flexibilities, improved corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal conductivity and increase fatigue life. Advantages of using composite material are:  Composites can provide a specific modulus (ratio of material stiffness to density) that is three and half to five times greater than steel or aluminum.  The fatigue endurance limit is much higher than for steel or aluminum.  Composites can provide a specific tensile strength (ratio of material stiffness to density) that is approximately four to six times greater than steel or aluminum.  Toughened composites can give impact energies significantly higher than aluminum alloys.  The potential for corrosion is significantly reduced.  Design flexibility is greater and can allow for physical property directionality in parts where desired.
