Stella
Furthermore, Stella's character is very similar to her actress's public image. Stella is the insurance
nurse that takes care of Jeffrey while he's wearing the cast. She is an important main character.
Stella is played by the actress Thelma Ritter. Ritter was born in 1902 and died in 1969, due to an
unexpected heart attack. Ritter is known for playing the wisecracking adviser – either as a nurse in
Rear Window or in other roles. Examples include her playing Birdie, a dresser, in All About Eve or
Thelma Ritter as the housekeeper in Pillow Talk. She was popular for the every–woman persona she
embodied – she was a relatable character for a huge part of the audience. Ritter was trained at the
Academy of Dramatic Arts and before her film career, she worked as a stage actress in ... Show

She does what the broad public does. She also dresses very casually and simple. She is a normal,
middle–aged woman – but she is also so much more than that. Wisecracking Stella is the main
source of comic relief. She explains the audience what is going on at the moment – blunt, at times,
but always honest. Her honesty and bluntness clarify what is going on at the moment. Stella is not
afraid to point out the obvious. She states the gross facts and answers the question everybody's
mind: „Now just where do you suppose he cut her up?" – „Oh – of course! In the bathtub. That's the
only place he could wash away the blood."
Furthermore, she foreshadows in the beginning of the film that Jeff's spying won't be good for him.
In the beginning, Stella reminds him that he could get in jail for „peeping". She prides herself on
having a nose for trouble, which turns out to be true – Jeff's spying did get him in trouble, because
he did not listen to her advice. During her first scene she is able to make a social commentary, do
her job and to scold Jeff. Stella gets things done. She is an

Mcfarland USA Stereotypes
McFarland USA has won the truly moving picture award. In order to win this award the movie has
to be overall artistic and inspiring. The award isn't like an oscar, it's a special award only given to
some movies. Many films a year are nominated but not all get the award. McFarland USA is the
most influential American film because it promotes awareness concerning racism, displays
technological advancements in sports, and demonstrates the reality of poverty. Just a few days after
the movie came out it was a hit. In an interview with Carols Pratt's the person who played Thomas

So for now people will just have to settle for a some movies a year that involve different races. In a
interview with Mellisa castellanos, Carlos pratts also said "There will always be stories for latinos
and latinas but I think the stories now are changing for the better." Our world is still developing and
this isn't a perfect world. However if this was a perfect world if the world was perfect then it would
be boring. If our world was perfect everybody would only like certain things which would be the
only things people like. There would be no difference, no competition, no sports.
Some people may think that Disney is just a sizeable company who are greedy. Who don't care
about the consumers and, that they make a movie about a different race every once in a while to not
look racist to the people and critics. This isn't the case Disney is not greedy or racist. Disney cares
about the consumer. They're making more movies dedicated to the different races. Most people think
that all Disney movies are animated and that if the movie is not animated it's not Disney. Disney has

Jolie and Pitt continued to adopt, later adopted Zahara from Ethiopia (). "Brangelina" went on to

After twelve years of wait, the third instalment of the "Bridget Jones" (2001 – 2004) film series has

When Working Title Films announced its intention of making another film back in 2009, several

The Oscar Whiteness Machine, By Richard Brody
The Oscar Whiteness Machine, written by Richard Brody, was published in the online The New
Yorker January 21st, 2016. The author has written for the New Yorker since 1999 and has been one
of their white movie critics, one of the subjects of this article, since 2005. In the Article Brody takes
the stance of a social justice warrior, proclaiming war on all those complicit in the disparity between
white and black; especially in the film arena. His subject changes with paragraphs, movie critics,
Oscar nominees and watchers, readers of the article, and anyone discriminatory. The Oscar
Whiteness Machine is a mix of genres but it gets its main point across, black people have been
discriminated against in the Oscars, and in life, and the film business plays a role in the suppression
of black culture. We honor the best and whitest. Neil Patrick Harris's opening line at the Oscars in
2015 does a good job at pointing out one of the flaws of the award show that Richard Brody so
passionately writes about. The article, while aimed at the Oscars, however, encompasses a wider
issue. According to Brody this issue is "the whiting–out of movies about black experience." and
looking at the past two years of nominations and winners, I wouldn 't say he 's wrong (Brody 1).
Brody uses logos to point out the overwhelming evidence of "the best movies by black filmmakers
have gone utterly unnoticed by the Academy" (Brody 2). He names actors like Danny Glover and
Alfre Woodard who have never been

The Theme Of Madness In Hamlet And Shakespeare's Hamlet
Shakespeare is known for the many reoccurring themes in his tragedies. One such theme is that of
love causing madness. One prime example of this is Ophelia's downfall in Hamlet. Hamlet has been
transformed into motion pictures any times, and two show the theme of madness in Ophelia in
different ways: the 1990 version of Hamlet created by Zeffirelli and the 1996 version by Branagh.
While both actresses that played Ophelia conveyed the madness well, they took different approaches
in terms of vocal inflections and movements. The directors also took different approaches to portray
madness like costumes and settings. Lastly, while Bonham–Carter's Ophelia in 1990 shows some
ambiguity in the reasons behind her madness, Blanchett's Ophelia in 1996 does not.
The major scene that shows the madness Ophelia has descended into is in act four scene five. The
two portrayals by Helen Bonham– Carter and Kate Blanchett are quite different as shown by their
acting of this scene. First, Bonham–Carter's movements appear much more calculated than
Blanchett's movements, as Blanchett primarily lies on the ground trashing out in a random manner.
Bonham–Carter, on the other hand, walks around the set with a purposeful stride
(witchywoman4u12, 2011). Next, they also speak quite differently. Blanchett screams the majority
of the speech and speaks with an inflection that speaks of unsureness. Bonham–Carter speaks with a
calmer tone like she knows exactly what she is saying. Lastly, when Ophelia has interactions
between herself and another character like her conversations with Gertrude and Claudius,
Blanchett's Ophelia appears to be unaware of her surroundings and other people initiate the
conversations (Aaron Bradford, 2013). Unlike the 1996 version, Bonham–Carter gets up close to
people when she is talking to them, and initiates the conversations between herself and Claudius and
Gertrude. This happens during Ophelia's lines, "Where is the beauteous majesty of Denmark...How
should I your true love know From another one? By his cockle hat and staff, And his sandal
shoon...Say you? nay, pray you, mark. He is dead and gone, lady, He is dead and gone; At his head a
grass–green turf, At his heels a stone," (IV.v, Shakespeare, William). She

Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Essay
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a British film directed by John Madden. It was released in
November 2011, and ran for 124 minutes. The cast includes Dev Patel, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench,
Celia Imrie, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Penelope Wilson. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is
comedic drama. The movie follows a group of elderly in a series of events that epitomize
sociological imagination, diachronic vision and trait transformation through each individual's
thoughts and actions.
The film follows a group of retired strangers in hopes of finding peace or relaxation in the Indian

The hotel serves as a metaphor for these individuals' past compared to their present. The hotel
seemed full of life and carried much potential. At first glance, it did not seem that way to anyone. As
time progressed, the hotel proved its worth. Sociological imagination enables an individual to step
outside the box and think from a different perspective. It provokes questions and forces one to think
away from the familiarities of his or her life. The setting of India shifts the dynamic and culture
away from their roots to Britain. Muriel played by Maggie Smith is a prime example of sociological
imagination. She is a retired housekeeper that needs hip surgery that either needs six months of
waiting in Britain or right away and for cheap in India. Muriel's character is judgmental and
prejudicial towards the Indians. It is evident that Muriel is hesitant for change in the beginning of
the movie as she is going through TSA and the agent must throw away her pickled food items
because they are prohibited. She continues to struggle with the adjustments and judges one of the
maids at the hotel. Yet the maid sees her judgment in a form of gratitude and tries to thank her.
Muriel is then invited to her home, and is offered

2016 Oscar Awards Controversy
Summary The article explores the difference between 2016 Oscar Awards, which was surrounded by
controversy regarding the lack of diversity, and the 2017 show, which attempted to demonstrate
diversity. According to the post, there were no actors of color nominated for the Oscars for the last
two years, and the issue arose some debates in 2016. As a result, seven minority actors were
nominated, six of which were black. Denzel Washington became the most nominated black actor
after he received a nomination for his role in "Fences." On the other hand, Viola Davis is the most
nominated black actress for her supporting role in "Fences." Similarly, Octavia Spencer landed a

The 2016 Oscar nominations sparked a heated debate over why the show had only white nominees
and prompted the academy to address the lack of diversity. However, it is imperative to note that the
event only represents what is happening in Hollywood and the filming studios. If the industry does
not give opportunities to the minorities to shine, they are not likely to appear in the Oscars. As
several leaders in the sector of complained, the minority rarely get chances to work in front of the
camera, which defines their presence at the award shows and not just the Oscars. Nonetheless, it is a
diversity issue that deserves attention and should be remedied. It is a source of difference, especially
in a country that prides itself as a multicultural nation. The Oscars should embrace the diversity that
reflects the entirety of the nation and simply the majority. Moreover, such an action would
demonstrate to be beneficial not only to the United States but also the Oscar Academy, which will be
able to assess a wider pool of talent in the industry and ensure that the voice of everyone gets

New York City
Today was another lousy Monday, just like last week. Everything Samantha did was scheduled. She
lived a very busy life in New York City. If it wasn't on her schedule she wouldn't make time for it.
Except today all of that changed. It started early in the morning. The day was stormy and extremely
rainy. The storms got carried away and knocked the power out. That led her to being late for work
because her alarm had not gone off. When she finally woke up on her own, she went into a panic!
Samantha hasn't been late to work in over ten years. She rushed around her apartment getting
dressed and fixing her hair. On her way out of the apartment she read a text from her boyfriend
Michael. The text was explaining that today is Valentine's Day and he wanted to take her out to
dinner. She replied back saying she would go. While she was walking outside from the apartments
she thought to herself, "Crap. How could I forget that today was Valentine's Day? I'm late for work
and it's rainy outside. How could this day get any worse?" She then stood on the sidewalk and hailed
a taxi. The taxi took off and she was finally on her way to work. She made it to work and got a huge
lecture from her boss. She had never been late before so she couldn't understand why he was so mad
at her. It was a long, slow, and uneventful day at work. Boy was she glad to be getting out of there
that evening. Outside the sky was dark but the stars were bright. She stood under a lamp post and

Daryl Hannah : Autism
Daryl Hannah: Autism "I was a daydreamer when I was a child and I still am. I like fantasy a lot. It
would be great if I could play with mythological creatures." ("Daryl Hannah"). Many people with
autism feel like Daryl Hannah; they like to go into their own worlds in their head instead of being in
the real world. Autism is hard and sometimes they just want to get away. Autism is a developmental
disorder that some people are born with, but if it is not treated, they could have it for the rest of their
lives (Allman 8). It is very difficult for people with autism to express themselves, they may make
odd noises or laugh in inappropriate times (Baldwin 16). Some symptoms are that they are not
talking at the age that they should be. This is very common in children who are autistic because
autism affects their senses, such as talking and hearing. They also may not respond to their name
when it is called because their brain does not know that their name is being called. Sometimes when
they are picked up, they may stiffen their body or be upset because they do not realize the person is
trying to comfort them. Flapping hands, rubbing certain things, and constantly spinning objects are
very common for people with autism because it helps their sensory issues (10). Autism may affect
social skills, communication, senses, and behavior therefore, people with autism may not always
function normally (4). The main cause of autism is the development of the brain (Baldwin 8).

Reflection About Reading And Writing
From the point when I was a little girl to now, I have changed my ways of thinking about reading
and writing a lot. I remember back in kindergarten I was put in a program called ESOL, I absolutely
hated it; I felt stupid because I was one of few kids that went there from my class. I was later to
learn that it was because I didn't speak English. In that program they would pull us out of class to
help us with reading and writing, and the clearest memory I have is being sat at a table with the
teacher and not really wanting to read and her forcing me to sound out every word and follow along
with my finger. This early on in my life I did not enjoy reading, I thought it was boring and there
was no point to it. This continued until I got removed from ESOL in third grade. That was when I
picked up a book I actually enjoyed, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, I automatically fell in
love with it. This was the turning point for my way of seeing reading and writing. By the time I was
in fifth grade I was one of the kids you would call a nerd, because I always had a book with me, I
don't really remember many of the books I did read though. Everyday when I got home I would plop
down on the couch and start reading. I wouldn't do homework just because I was reading. My mom
would get so annoyed with me she would say, "get off that couch and get your face out of that book!
Do something else for a change!" I remember in earlier years she would beg me to pick up a book

What Is Angelina Jolie Developmental Biography
DEVELOPMENTAL HISTORY Angelina Jolie Voight was born on June 4, 1975, in Los Angeles,
California, to actor Jon Voight and actress Marcheline Bertrand. Angelina had a troubled childhood,
the result of growing up with an estranged and famous father and a mother who, despite her laissez–
faire parenting style, used her daughter as a vehicle through which to live out her own dreams of
stardom. For the first year or so of Jolie's life, she was kept in a white office five floors above her
mother's apartment and tended by a rotation of babysitters (her mother finding her too similar–
looking to her just–run–off husband). There were days when her mother would not visit.
Psychiatrists speculate that Angelina's mother became unhinged after her husband was discovered to
be cheating on her while Angelina was just a babe in arms. Growing up, she didn't like being
hugged. During an interview with London's Mail, she said: "Growing up, I had a thing about people

mother's number, who played the messages for her friends. "Here was Mick Jagger virtually sobbing
down the phone" (Morton, 133). Meanwhile, Angelina's mother was encouraging her daughter to
formalize her divorce from her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller of Trainspotting, and consulting
astrologers on the likelihood of her marrying Jagger. Finally, just as Jolie's relationship with Billy
Bob Thornton was beginning, Jagger succeeded in publicly making out with Jolie at Toronto's Sky

I find scars attractive.
Never feel inferior because of your imperfections in life. Your flaws are the reminder of all the
struggles you have surpassed and growth you have reached. Be proud of them like they are your
battle scars. Remember, imperfections make a person beautiful because it shows how strong you are.
Save one–third, live on one–third, and give away one–third
Even a star like Angelina, knows the importance of saving for the future. Life would be better if you
are less worried about your finance. Learn to live within your means and learn to save money. With
the notion of good karma, give back to those who are in need, and the universe will return it in better
ways.
I'm looking very much forward to growing older. I want to be an exhausted older woman but with a
very full life behind me and one still going.
Don't be afraid to grow old, it is an achievement not all people experience. Growing old is a sign of
maturity and wisdom. Be proud of your wrinkles and gray hair because they prove how much you
have achieved and how much more you can attain.

Glenn Close Essay
It is really surprising that these talented actors/actresses have yet to win an Academy Award (also
referred to as an Oscar). I honestly hope Glenn Close wins an Oscar before it's too late, otherwise
the legendary actress will have to settle for the Academy Honorary Award. The award recognizes
exceptional people in film who never received an Oscar.
Number One: Tom Cruise. The actor has been nominated for three Academy Awards, but he has yet
to win the award. Cruise has been nominated twice for Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July
(1990) and Jerry Maguire (1997). In the year 2000, he was up for the Best Supporting Actor award

Janet 's Point Of View
Janet's Point of View in "The Storm" McKnight Malmar's story, "The Storm", is a suspenseful short
story about a woman, later in the story revealed to be named Janet, coming home to an empty house
with no sign of her husband, Ben. The story is told in third person limited point of view where the
reader follows Janet who has to process her husband being gone, and finding the lifeless body of a
woman while alone in her isolated home during a thunderstorm. The story starts with Janet being
excited and relieved to come home to her husband, where she imagines a kind, almost platonic Ben
to welcome her home by kissing her cheeks and touching her shoulders (Malmar, Pg. 1). Through
the progression of the story, Janet uses her time alone to shift her happy thoughts of Ben into doubt
and reason. During the storm, Janet is able to see her life with Ben as the abusive relationship it
truly is. The first portion of the story begins with Janet having high regards for her husband and the
house they live in. She imagined a surprised Ben "sitting by the fire with his paper" inside their
home, with his face lighting up at her early return. In the kitchen, she would make coffee for the two
of them and talk by the fire. She sits in the house without Ben, who is not home, and while alone,
her attention shifts from her idealistic scenario involving her husband to the ongoing storm and how
it appears to be getting worse. From this point of the story and onwards, Janet battles herself and

Essay on Girl Interrupted Review
One popular cultural myth about the mentally ill is the archetype of the "Sexy Crazy Girl", which
we've seen in movies, comic books, and music. Losing your grip with reality is not a glamorous
subject, but that's not what you get from Girl, Interrupted. It is apparent that all the girls in the
movie had some type of dysfunctional personality, and bad things happen to some of them, but it
just did not seem realistic. First off, most of the patients prtrayed were young, which made the care
facility look like a youth home rather than a mental institution. but only the main (well known) stars,
(Jolie and Ryder) were focal piont. I'll also note that about half the young girls in the movie, Ryder
and Jolie included, simply don't look like girls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems she's playing nearly the same sexy–vixen she's played in a few other films already; just this
time, she's in a t–shirt, and occasionally gets tied to a bed. It'd be interesting to see Jolie really
stretch beyond her type; maybe in a Jane Austen movie or playing a nun.
Overall, Girl, Interrupted feels like a movie that could've been rawer, more intense, and more
confrontational... ie, a lot less Hollywood. I found myself wondering what this adaptation of
Kaysen's book would've been like if it had been done on a shoestring budget with unknown young
actresses and a fledgling director. Some Folks Call it a Sling Blade, the short film by Billy Bob
Thornton that led to the film Sling Blade came to mind. I'm also noticing that that's the 2nd time I
referenced another film that is primarily about men, not women. Maybe we need an excellent film
about mentally ill young women, and maybe Girl, Interrupted could've been that film... but it isn't.
Quickly summed up, this film may indeed be compared to a female version of One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest, except where that film was a rebellion tale, Girl, Interrupted appears to be more
about self–discovery. Though this film has been long in development, and many actresses vied for
the leading role, the casting call was even more crowded for the supporting roles. In particular,
though I haven't yet read the book, and so I don't know the

Fences was written by August Wilson and is a part of Wilson's "Century Cycle" of plays set in the

Analysis Of Catherine Zeta Jones, The Academy Award...
Until 2011, Catherine Zeta Jones was known as the Academy Award–Winning for best supporting

with Bipolar II disorder and is seeking treatment for it. To be diagnosed of bipolar II disorder, it's
necessary to meet the following criteria for current or past hypomanic episode and criteria for
current or past major depressive disorder. Also the occurrence of hypomanic episode and major
depressive disorder should not be better explained by schizophrenia, or other specified or
unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorder. Hypomanic episode is period of

disturbance in mood are observable by others. The episode is not due to physiological effects of a
substance. It is not severe enough to cause impairment in occupational or social functioning or to
necessitate hospitalization. But if there are psychotic features, then it is labeled manic. The episode
is associated with unequivocal change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of individual when not
symptomatic" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). And finally the last criteria is, during the

Main Line Pictures Vs. Kim Basinger Essay
It seems like an awfully difficult task to calculate lost profits to Main Line Pictures in this case. Kim
Basinger, a well–known and very reputable actress, walked away from a movie deal causing Main
Line Pictures to lose money. The amount of Main Line's loss can never be determined with pinpoint
accuracy, and Main Line would not have made the profit that they indicate they would have.
However, is the plaintiff correct and are the claims the plaintiff is bringing forward reasonable?
First, Main Line's maximum and minimum lost profit amounts should not be revised downward. The
3 million dollars represents an estimate of predictable future cash flows from domestic distribution.

In fact, Bruce Willis' films usually bring in large amounts of money are box office hits, but Hudson
Hawk apparently was a flop and a big loss. Who could have predicted that? Now, let's discuss what
costs may or may not have been relevant to Main Line in determining lost profits. When Kim
Basinger walked away from "Boxing Helena, she agreed to star in a movie, "Final Analysis." She
made 3 million dollars by making this movie. This indicates that Kim Basinger is a marketable
actress and her going rate is somewhere around three million dollars. If this is the case, which I say
it is, then this amount is relevant. Conversely though, I can also play devil's advocate in this
situation and see why Main Line is not entitled to this amount. After all, Main Line was only paying
Ms. Basinger about 1 million dollars. Why should they reap the benefit if another movie company
decided to pay her more money for her services? Main Line is also not entitled to the differential
profit loss by comparing Basinger films to Fenn films. It is understandable how Main Line thinks
they are because Basinger films do make more than Fenn films, but who can say with certainty that
this would have been the case in Boxing Helena––a controversial and unconventional film to say the
least. Again I direct your attention to the Bruce Willis and Whoopi Goldberg movie flop argument.

Rhetorical Devices In Angelina Jolie Speech

Pakistan. Pakistan holds many refugees from Afghanistan who have fled their home country because
of the political and religious conflict there, such as Al–Qaeda and the Taliban. Jolie has made
multiple expeditions to Pakistan to help aid these refugees. In her speech, Angelina Jolie uses
repetition, anecdote, and historical allusion to create an emotional appeal and persuade Americans to

After telling the anecdote of the women and two children who gave Jolie the last of their drink, she
says, "Since before the parable of the Widow's Mite it has been known that those who have the least
will give the most" (Jolie 3). The parable of the Widow's Mite tells of a poor widow who gives
everything she had for God. By alluding to the Widow's Mite, Jolie once again reflects upon the
generosity of refugees and those who are in need. By making those listening to her speech once
again think about the generosity of the women giving the last of their drink supplies away, Angelina
Jolie creates a emotional appeal. Jolie uses historical allusion again when she compares what's
happening to the refugees in Pakistan to other situations in the Middle East. Jolie says, "Whether it
be Darfur, Myanmar, or Swat Valley, or some as yet unknown crises, mass migrations will be a
feature of our future..." (Jolie 5). The allusion to the genocide taking place in Darfur, the
displacement of over 139,000 people in Myanmar, and the Malala shooting in Swat Valley gives
examples of other times people like the Afghanistan refugees in Pakistan have been displaced from
their homes. Many of those listening to Angelina Jolie's speech are familiar with the events that she
alludes to and have felt sympathy or even helped those people affected by those situations. By
alluding to those events and comparing what is happening in Pakistan to those events, Jolie creates
an emotional appeal to those listening to her speech by making them feel the same sympathy they
felt for those who were affected by the events she alludes to. Because of the sympathy they now feel
for Afghan refugees, listeners are persuaded to help those

The most important decision you can make, one that will make or break the date, is the type of

Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie Essay
Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie
In horror films, there is always one scene that opens up the perceived realm of normality to that of
fear and confusion. Directors and authors alike use these scenes to show the change in the pace of
the film. In both the movie Psycho (1960) and Carrie (1976), shower scenes are used to mark this
epic turning point with sexuality, blood and voyeurism; the most important ingredients to horror.
The idea of sneaking around and peering into forbidden places gives just about everyone a thrill.
Voyeurism is used strongly in both Psycho and Carrie due to its ability to entice thrill in the viewer.
In Carrie, we start the scene by looking into a girls' high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are then given an extreme close–up of Norman's eye, staring wide into the room; the view we
have gives us the thrill of actually being there, watching Marion undress. This method of filming,
giving the audience the sight of the forbidden, adds thrill to the important scenes. Thrill only
encourages us to watch the movie more intently, on the edge of our seats.
Sexuality also adds a great deal of tension to the two scenes. We watch as Marion drops her robe to
the floor and steps gingerly into the shower. Once in the shower, we are given a point–of–view shot
of the showerhead, a huge showerhead covering her entire body with clean, warm water, cleansing
her of her sins in an almost baptismal way. We are allowed only collarbone–up shots of her in the
shower, only hints to her nakedness. We can only imagine what she looks like, giving the audience
the same thoughts that raced through Norman's mind as he looked in on her through the peephole.
Carrie is also highly sexualized, more so given the fact that more nudity was allowed with the
changing times. As we gaze at the different close–up camera shots of her body, we watch as she
reaches for the soap. The audience watches as she rubs soap all over her body in slow motion, her
face complacent in both peace and pleasure. Carrie then begins to rub her breasts and her inner thigh

Differences Between The Book And The Constant Gardener
The Constant Gardener The Constant Gardener, which is one of the greatest movies I have ever
seen, is not fiction. After watching the movie, if you search the title on the internet, you will know
the shocking fact that this is a real story. The Constant Gardener originated from the novel The
Constant Gardener written by John le Carré in 2001, based on a real–life case in Kano, Nigeria,
related to medical experimentation in the 1990s. Therefore, both the novel and the movie are mainly
depicting such a careless, indiscrete medical experimentation, with a few changes such as a change
of location and change of the medicine's name. Taking off these superficial alterations, the
difference between the real case and The Constant Gardener–including both novel and movie―is
virtually none.
Back to the movie, we can see a low–level British diplomat Justin Quayle is the main character in
this movie. One day, his wife Tessa was found dead, Justin realized Tessa kept from Justin her secret

To Kill A Mockingbird Book Vs Movie Analysis
Just because a movie is based on a book doesn't mean they will be exactly the same. Characters and
settings can change, scenes might be added or deleted. To Kill A Mockingbird is no different. While
there are many similarities, there are plenty of differences. Goals were set by producers and
directors, specific actors were chosen to bring characters to life. This creates several differences that
can be seen between the book and the movie. After it was published, the book, To Kill A
Mockingbird, was in instant success. The book showed what is was like between whites and blacks
back in a time before equality and the truth about how wrongly people of color were treated. "When
it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are
the facts of life" (Lee, 295). Lee did an excellent job getting that point across. Although the film To
Kill A Mockingbird is based on the novel, there are still many differences. The film producers made
some changes to the order of events and how some things happened. They wanted to make the story
flow more easily. So, they switched it up. The movie producers also chose to leave out some

was good, but the film brought the book to life for me. Maybe it is because I cannot fathom a time

Just last year after the 2016 Oscars the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag went viral due to the all–white

My School Day Speech
Every day starts the same way. My alarm screeches at me to restart my cycle by getting up. The T.V
from the first floor, always on channel 12, blasts the news about what is happening around us.
Ignoring it as always, I sprint down the stairs into the kitchen to inhale the savory smell. My mother,
who is always on top of things, is preparing my breakfast. Making sure that I can never have a
peaceful breakfast, she ensures that I receive my daily speech. "Do not talk to strangers, Rachel. Do
not reveal where my family is from, Rachel. Do not do anything where the police can be involved,
Rachel." Truly, after the hundreds and hundreds of times she has recited this speech, I suddenly lose
the meaning of those statements, but I brush it off and continue my daily round.
To continue my endless sequence, there is school, with teachers teaching the same topics every year,
with textbooks that seem like they were from the 1800's. It's never something new, nothing relevant.
I always do what I am told, whether it is to answer a question or to explain why I chose that answer
or to always do my homework. I find it easier just to accept whatever is given to you and not fight
against it. Less conflict for myself and other people.
To conclude my school day, I typically take my bus home. Unfortunately, after a jammed locker
incident one day, I missed it.
"Oh, so you're still at school? Well, you can call a taxi. Just be careful" said my mother worriedly
through the phone. "Hurry home." I can never understand why she is always on her toes for the
smallest things. It's a simple taxi ride, what can go wrong?
As I was waiting by the steps of the school, a sleek black car rolled up right in front of the building.
"I guess that's the taxi," I thought to myself. Quickly, I walked to the car, opened the passenger door,
and sat inside.
"Hello, Rachel, right? You were the one that ordered the taxi?" The taxi driver did not seem to move
when he asked, almost like a robot. I hesitantly confirmed with a subtle "yes" then he drove away
from the school.
Daydreaming while looking through the window, I did not realize that the taxi driver was not taking
the usual route to my house. I firmly grasped my phone and my things in case of any

African American Women in Early Film Essay
African American Women in Early Film
In early film many African American actresses portrayed roles as mammies, slaves, seductresses,
and maids. These roles suppressed them not allowing them to show their true talents. Although they
had to take on these degrading roles, they still performed with dignity, elegance, grace and style.
They paved the way for many actresses to follow both blacks and whites. These women showed the
film industry that they were more than slaves, mammies, and maids. These beautiful actresses
showed the film industry that they are able to hold lead parts and even carry the whole cast if need
be. Phenomenal actresses such as Hattie McDaniels, Pearl Bailey, Ethel Waters, Nina Mae
McKinney, and Dorothy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was much for an African–American as well as a white entertainer. Even though she broke that
barrier McDaniel was still oppressed by racism not only on film, but also off film. She was
faced with racial legal problems when trying to acquire a home in Los Angeles. At that time there
was a limited black land and home ownership right. Though she won the suite she still was
subjected to racial hostility from her neighbors. McDaniels experience oppressions of many types
during her career, but she continued to take the mammy roles but played them with dignity and
respect. In spite of her being the mammy, McDaniels made sure that her characters had the "upper
hand". After McDaniels death the mammy roles died with her.
Pearl Bailey, the "Ambassador of Love" career took off on Washington's U street at the age of
fifteen years of age. She started off as a singer and appeared in many nightclubs. In the mid–30's she
performed with the Noble Sissle's Band in the Village Vanguard and Blue Angel Club. In the 40's
she was the lead singer for Count Basie, Cab Calloway and Cootie Williams. She debuted on
Broadway in St. Louis Blue; she won honors for as Broadway's best newcomer. After her debut on
Broadway films she performed in Variety Girl, Isn't It Romantic, Carmen Jones, and Porgy and
Bess. "In 1967 she won a Tony Award for heading the all–black cast of

  • 1. Stella Furthermore, Stella's character is very similar to her actress's public image. Stella is the insurance nurse that takes care of Jeffrey while he's wearing the cast. She is an important main character. Stella is played by the actress Thelma Ritter. Ritter was born in 1902 and died in 1969, due to an unexpected heart attack. Ritter is known for playing the wisecracking adviser – either as a nurse in Rear Window or in other roles. Examples include her playing Birdie, a dresser, in All About Eve or Thelma Ritter as the housekeeper in Pillow Talk. She was popular for the every–woman persona she embodied – she was a relatable character for a huge part of the audience. She also dresses very casually and simple. She is a normal, middle–aged woman – but she is also so much more than that. Wisecracking Stella is the main source of comic relief. She explains the audience what is going on at the moment – blunt, at times, but always honest. Her honesty and bluntness clarify what is going on at the moment. Stella is not afraid to point out the obvious. She states the gross facts and answers the question everybody's mind: „Now just where do you suppose he cut her up?" – „Oh – of course! In the bathtub. That's the only place he could wash away the blood." Furthermore, she foreshadows in the beginning of the film that Jeff's spying won't be good for him. In the beginning, Stella reminds him that he could get in jail for „peeping". She prides herself on having a nose for trouble, which turns out to be true – Jeff's spying did get him in trouble, because he did not listen to her advice. During her first scene she is able to make a social commentary, do her job and to scold Jeff. Stella gets things done. She is an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our world is still developing and this isn't a perfect world. However if this was a perfect world if the world was perfect then it would be boring. If our world was perfect everybody would only like certain things which would be the only things people like. There would be no difference, no competition, no sports. Some people may think that Disney is just a sizeable company who are greedy. Who don't care about the consumers and, that they make a movie about a different race every once in a while to not look racist to the people and critics. This isn't the case Disney is not greedy or racist. Disney cares about the consumer. They're making more movies dedicated to the different races. • 10. The Oscar Whiteness Machine, By Richard Brody The Oscar Whiteness Machine, written by Richard Brody, was published in the online The New Yorker January 21st, 2016. The author has written for the New Yorker since 1999 and has been one of their white movie critics, one of the subjects of this article, since 2005. In the Article Brody takes the stance of a social justice warrior, proclaiming war on all those complicit in the disparity between white and black; especially in the film arena. His subject changes with paragraphs, movie critics, Oscar nominees and watchers, readers of the article, and anyone discriminatory. The Oscar Whiteness Machine is a mix of genres but it gets its main point across, black people have been discriminated against in the Oscars, and in life, and the film business plays a role in the suppression of black culture. We honor the best and whitest. Neil Patrick Harris's opening line at the Oscars in 2015 does a good job at pointing out one of the flaws of the award show that Richard Brody so passionately writes about. The article, while aimed at the Oscars, however, encompasses a wider issue. According to Brody this issue is "the whiting–out of movies about black experience." and looking at the past two years of nominations and winners, I wouldn 't say he 's wrong (Brody 1). • 11. The Theme Of Madness In Hamlet And Shakespeare's Hamlet Shakespeare is known for the many reoccurring themes in his tragedies. One such theme is that of love causing madness. One prime example of this is Ophelia's downfall in Hamlet. Hamlet has been transformed into motion pictures any times, and two show the theme of madness in Ophelia in different ways: the 1990 version of Hamlet created by Zeffirelli and the 1996 version by Branagh. While both actresses that played Ophelia conveyed the madness well, they took different approaches in terms of vocal inflections and movements. The directors also took different approaches to portray madness like costumes and settings. Lastly, while Bonham–Carter's Ophelia in 1990 shows some ambiguity in the reasons behind her madness, Blanchett's Ophelia in 1996 does not. The major scene that shows the madness Ophelia has descended into is in act four scene five. The two portrayals by Helen Bonham– Carter and Kate Blanchett are quite different as shown by their acting of this scene. First, Bonham–Carter's movements appear much more calculated than Blanchett's movements, as Blanchett primarily lies on the ground trashing out in a random manner. Bonham–Carter, on the other hand, walks around the set with a purposeful stride (witchywoman4u12, 2011). Next, they also speak quite differently. Blanchett screams the majority of the speech and speaks with an inflection that speaks of unsureness. Bonham–Carter speaks with a calmer tone like she knows exactly what she is saying. Lastly, when Ophelia has interactions between herself and another character like her conversations with Gertrude and Claudius, Blanchett's Ophelia appears to be unaware of her surroundings and other people initiate the conversations (Aaron Bradford, 2013). Unlike the 1996 version, Bonham–Carter gets up close to people when she is talking to them, and initiates the conversations between herself and Claudius and Gertrude. This happens during Ophelia's lines, "Where is the beauteous majesty of Denmark...How should I your true love know From another one? By his cockle hat and staff, And his sandal shoon...Say you? nay, pray you, mark. If it wasn't on her schedule she wouldn't make time for it. Except today all of that changed. It started early in the morning. The day was stormy and extremely rainy. The storms got carried away and knocked the power out. That led her to being late for work because her alarm had not gone off. When she finally woke up on her own, she went into a panic! Samantha hasn't been late to work in over ten years. She rushed around her apartment getting dressed and fixing her hair. On her way out of the apartment she read a text from her boyfriend Michael. The text was explaining that today is Valentine's Day and he wanted to take her out to dinner. She replied back saying she would go. While she was walking outside from the apartments she thought to herself, "Crap. How could I forget that today was Valentine's Day? I'm late for work and it's rainy outside. How could this day get any worse?" She then stood on the sidewalk and hailed a taxi. The taxi took off and she was finally on her way to work. She made it to work and got a huge lecture from her boss. She had never been late before so she couldn't understand why he was so mad at her. It was a long, slow, and uneventful day at work. Autism is hard and sometimes they just want to get away. Autism is a developmental disorder that some people are born with, but if it is not treated, they could have it for the rest of their lives (Allman 8). It is very difficult for people with autism to express themselves, they may make odd noises or laugh in inappropriate times (Baldwin 16). Some symptoms are that they are not talking at the age that they should be. This is very common in children who are autistic because autism affects their senses, such as talking and hearing. They also may not respond to their name when it is called because their brain does not know that their name is being called. Sometimes when they are picked up, they may stiffen their body or be upset because they do not realize the person is trying to comfort them. Flapping hands, rubbing certain things, and constantly spinning objects are very common for people with autism because it helps their sensory issues (10). • 16. Reflection About Reading And Writing From the point when I was a little girl to now, I have changed my ways of thinking about reading and writing a lot. I remember back in kindergarten I was put in a program called ESOL, I absolutely hated it; I felt stupid because I was one of few kids that went there from my class. I was later to learn that it was because I didn't speak English. In that program they would pull us out of class to help us with reading and writing, and the clearest memory I have is being sat at a table with the teacher and not really wanting to read and her forcing me to sound out every word and follow along with my finger. This early on in my life I did not enjoy reading, I thought it was boring and there was no point to it. This continued until I got removed from ESOL in third grade. That was when I picked up a book I actually enjoyed, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, I automatically fell in love with it. This was the turning point for my way of seeing reading and writing. By the time I was in fifth grade I was one of the kids you would call a nerd, because I always had a book with me, I don't really remember many of the books I did read though. Everyday when I got home I would plop down on the couch and start reading. I wouldn't do homework just because I was reading. My mom would get so annoyed with me she would say, "get off that couch and get your face out of that book! Do something else for a change!" Angelina had a troubled childhood, the result of growing up with an estranged and famous father and a mother who, despite her laissez– faire parenting style, used her daughter as a vehicle through which to live out her own dreams of stardom. For the first year or so of Jolie's life, she was kept in a white office five floors above her mother's apartment and tended by a rotation of babysitters (her mother finding her too similar– looking to her just–run–off husband). There were days when her mother would not visit. Psychiatrists speculate that Angelina's mother became unhinged after her husband was discovered to be cheating on her while Angelina was just a babe in arms. Growing up, she didn't like being hugged. • 22. Janet 's Point Of View Janet's Point of View in "The Storm" McKnight Malmar's story, "The Storm", is a suspenseful short story about a woman, later in the story revealed to be named Janet, coming home to an empty house with no sign of her husband, Ben. The story is told in third person limited point of view where the reader follows Janet who has to process her husband being gone, and finding the lifeless body of a woman while alone in her isolated home during a thunderstorm. The story starts with Janet being excited and relieved to come home to her husband, where she imagines a kind, almost platonic Ben to welcome her home by kissing her cheeks and touching her shoulders (Malmar, Pg. 1). Through the progression of the story, Janet uses her time alone to shift her happy thoughts of Ben into doubt and reason. During the storm, Janet is able to see her life with Ben as the abusive relationship it truly is. The first portion of the story begins with Janet having high regards for her husband and the house they live in. She imagined a surprised Ben "sitting by the fire with his paper" inside their home, with his face lighting up at her early return. In the kitchen, she would make coffee for the two of them and talk by the fire. She sits in the house without Ben, who is not home, and while alone, her attention shifts from her idealistic scenario involving her husband to the ongoing storm and how it appears to be getting worse. It is apparent that all the girls in the movie had some type of dysfunctional personality, and bad things happen to some of them, but it just did not seem realistic. • 26. Analysis Of Catherine Zeta Jones, The Academy Award... Until 2011, Catherine Zeta Jones was known as the Academy Award–Winning for best supporting actress for her role in Chicago. Then, she stunned her fans by saying that she has been diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder and is seeking treatment for it. To be diagnosed of bipolar II disorder, it's necessary to meet the following criteria for current or past hypomanic episode and criteria for current or past major depressive disorder. Also the occurrence of hypomanic episode and major depressive disorder should not be better explained by schizophrenia, or other specified or unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorder. Hypomanic episode is period of abnormally and persistently elevated mood and abnormally and persistently increased energy present most of the day, nearly every day for 4 consecutive days. "The change in functioning and disturbance in mood are observable by others. The episode is not due to physiological effects of a substance. It is not severe enough to cause impairment in occupational or social functioning or to necessitate hospitalization. But if there are psychotic features, then it is labeled manic. The episode is associated with unequivocal change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of individual when not symptomatic" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). And finally the last criteria is, during the period of increased energy and mood disturbance, three or more of the following symptoms must persist: inflated self–esteem, increase in ... • 27. Taraji P Henson Essay When asked to write about my favorite actor or actress, there are many people I could have chosen but I choose Taraji P Henson because she is the most real to me. I can't help but smile when I think of Taraji P Henson a beautiful, diverse actress who is humble and sincere in her craft. When I was nine years old, I first saw Taraji in her second film debut, "Hustle & Flow" in which she portrayed a character named Shug. Shug was a pregnant prostitute who became the love interest of the male lead. Although Taraji is modest about her singing talent, she gives a riveting performance in this movie particularly on the song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp." I was unsure that it was her really singing until I found out she provided the actual vocals for the Three 6 Mafia track and the song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2006. While her portrayal look effortless, Taraji does a lot of preparation and considers carefully the roles she decides to take. From TV to film to animation, Taraji P Henson has had a diversity of experience that is rarely highlighted or spoken of yet is a testament to her commitment to acting.. • 29. Main Line Pictures Vs. Kim Basinger Essay It seems like an awfully difficult task to calculate lost profits to Main Line Pictures in this case. Kim Basinger, a well–known and very reputable actress, walked away from a movie deal causing Main Line Pictures to lose money. The amount of Main Line's loss can never be determined with pinpoint accuracy, and Main Line would not have made the profit that they indicate they would have. However, is the plaintiff correct and are the claims the plaintiff is bringing forward reasonable? First, Main Line's maximum and minimum lost profit amounts should not be revised downward. The 3 million dollars represents an estimate of predictable future cash flows from domestic distribution. The deal not being finalized does not in any way change ... Who could have predicted that? Now, let's discuss what costs may or may not have been relevant to Main Line in determining lost profits. When Kim Basinger walked away from "Boxing Helena, she agreed to star in a movie, "Final Analysis." She made 3 million dollars by making this movie. This indicates that Kim Basinger is a marketable actress and her going rate is somewhere around three million dollars. If this is the case, which I say it is, then this amount is relevant. Conversely though, I can also play devil's advocate in this situation and see why Main Line is not entitled to this amount. After all, Main Line was only paying Ms. Basinger about 1 million dollars. Why should they reap the benefit if another movie company decided to pay her more money for her services? Main Line is also not entitled to the differential profit loss by comparing Basinger films to Fenn films. It is understandable how Main Line thinks they are because Basinger films do make more than Fenn films, but who can say with certainty that this would have been the case in Boxing Helena––a controversial and unconventional film to say the least. Again I direct your attention to the Bruce Willis and Whoopi Goldberg movie flop argument. Main Line is correct by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The parable of the Widow's Mite tells of a poor widow who gives everything she had for God. By alluding to the Widow's Mite, Jolie once again reflects upon the generosity of refugees and those who are in need. By making those listening to her speech once again think about the generosity of the women giving the last of their drink supplies away, Angelina Jolie creates a emotional appeal. Jolie uses historical allusion again when she compares what's happening to the refugees in Pakistan to other situations in the Middle East. Jolie says, "Whether it be Darfur, Myanmar, or Swat Valley, or some as yet unknown crises, mass migrations will be a feature of our future..." (Jolie 5). The allusion to the genocide taking place in Darfur, the displacement of over 139,000 people in Myanmar, and the Malala shooting in Swat Valley gives examples of other times people like the Afghanistan refugees in Pakistan have been displaced from their homes. Many of those listening to Angelina Jolie's speech are familiar with the events that she alludes to and have felt sympathy or even helped those people affected by those situations. By alluding to those events and comparing what is happening in Pakistan to those events, Jolie creates an emotional appeal to those listening to her speech by making them feel the same sympathy they felt for those who were affected by the events she alludes to. Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie Essay Fear and Confusion in films Psycho and Carrie In horror films, there is always one scene that opens up the perceived realm of normality to that of fear and confusion. Directors and authors alike use these scenes to show the change in the pace of the film. In both the movie Psycho (1960) and Carrie (1976), shower scenes are used to mark this epic turning point with sexuality, blood and voyeurism; the most important ingredients to horror. The idea of sneaking around and peering into forbidden places gives just about everyone a thrill. This method of filming, giving the audience the sight of the forbidden, adds thrill to the important scenes. Thrill only encourages us to watch the movie more intently, on the edge of our seats. Sexuality also adds a great deal of tension to the two scenes. We watch as Marion drops her robe to the floor and steps gingerly into the shower. Once in the shower, we are given a point–of–view shot of the showerhead, a huge showerhead covering her entire body with clean, warm water, cleansing her of her sins in an almost baptismal way. We are allowed only collarbone–up shots of her in the shower, only hints to her nakedness. We can only imagine what she looks like, giving the audience the same thoughts that raced through Norman's mind as he looked in on her through the peephole. Carrie is also highly sexualized, more so given the fact that more nudity was allowed with the changing times. As we gaze at the different close–up camera shots of her body, we watch as she reaches for the soap. The audience watches as she rubs soap all over her body in slow motion, her face complacent in both peace and pleasure. Carrie then begins to rub her breasts and her inner thigh in a very ... • 35. Differences Between The Book And The Constant Gardener The Constant Gardener The Constant Gardener, which is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, is not fiction. After watching the movie, if you search the title on the internet, you will know the shocking fact that this is a real story. The Constant Gardener originated from the novel The Constant Gardener written by John le Carré in 2001, based on a real–life case in Kano, Nigeria, related to medical experimentation in the 1990s. Therefore, both the novel and the movie are mainly depicting such a careless, indiscrete medical experimentation, with a few changes such as a change of location and change of the medicine's name. Taking off these superficial alterations, the difference between the real case and The Constant Gardener–including both novel and movie―is virtually none. Back to the movie, we can see a low–level British diplomat Justin Quayle is the main character in this movie. One day, his wife Tessa was found dead, Justin realized Tessa kept from Justin her secret that she investigated a suspicious drug trial in Kenya and tried to expose it. • 36. To Kill A Mockingbird Book Vs Movie Analysis Just because a movie is based on a book doesn't mean they will be exactly the same. Characters and settings can change, scenes might be added or deleted. To Kill A Mockingbird is no different. While there are many similarities, there are plenty of differences. Goals were set by producers and directors, specific actors were chosen to bring characters to life. This creates several differences that can be seen between the book and the movie. After it was published, the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, was in instant success. The book showed what is was like between whites and blacks back in a time before equality and the truth about how wrongly people of color were treated. "When it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (Lee, 295). Lee did an excellent job getting that point across. Although the film To Kill A Mockingbird is based on the novel, there are still many differences. • 39. My School Day Speech Every day starts the same way. My alarm screeches at me to restart my cycle by getting up. The T.V from the first floor, always on channel 12, blasts the news about what is happening around us. Ignoring it as always, I sprint down the stairs into the kitchen to inhale the savory smell. My mother, who is always on top of things, is preparing my breakfast. Making sure that I can never have a peaceful breakfast, she ensures that I receive my daily speech. "Do not talk to strangers, Rachel. Do not reveal where my family is from, Rachel. Do not do anything where the police can be involved, Rachel." Truly, after the hundreds and hundreds of times she has recited this speech, I suddenly lose the meaning of those statements, but I brush it off and continue my daily round. As I was waiting by the steps of the school, a sleek black car rolled up right in front of the building. "I guess that's the taxi," I thought to myself. Quickly, I walked to the car, opened the passenger door, and sat inside. "Hello, Rachel, right? You were the one that ordered the taxi?" The taxi driver did not seem to move when he asked, almost like a robot. I hesitantly confirmed with a subtle "yes" then he drove away from the school.
