During this stage comes the Oedipus complex which in his theory is a significant part of child
development. Before the Oedipus stage, there is only the direct relationship between the child and
the mother. When the Oedipus stage arrives, the father comes into play (Flitterman–Lewis, 1992, p.
205). The same sex parent becomes a rival for the child because the child desires the parent of the
opposite sex, but the same sex parent is in the way. From fear of castration, a boy will repress his

Seeing the riots and protests on the news can help people to put life in perspective, and with there
being more and more issues with genders today it makes people wonder why. With there being so
many genders that people identify with in this, the 21st century, it can get to be confusing and
difficult for some people to follow and understand this 'why' behind people's choices. Changes have
been made within communities all around the country; eventually, other groups join into the
changes. Some example of these being businesses, colleges, and other organisations. Though there
are many people who aren't involved with any sort of issue having to do with a person's gender
identity, those who are impacted by these decisions go through many different situations. A parent's
decisions while raising their child(ren) have a great impact on what the child identifies themselves
as later on in life and the way that they express themselves in public. There being an increased
amount of tension around the matter will more than likely continue growing as the publicity on the
issue continues.
Roots to the words gender and sex. The word gender comes from the word genus in Latin. Genus
means someone's kind or race, and this can be based on, "legal status, social interactions, public
persona, personal experiences, and psychologic setting" (Ghosh). This meaning that a person's
environment affects their identity, gender wise. Along with the Latin root for gender, sex is taken
from the word sexus which "is defined by the gonads, or potential gonads" and tends to be given at
birth. Boy and girl, being the two main gender identities, have been seen by most as the only
genders to choose from. The term for this is known as "gender binary" (Gender Spectrum), and this
can be seen in divergent ways.

Gender appears to be a fundamental category taken place in our identity and has emphasized to us at
an early age. Going to Wal–Mart and Target we discovered that tons of our preferences are made for
us before we are even born. As an infant, it seems that boys prefer blue and girls prefer pink.
Because of our gender ideology and socialization, it is easy to differentiate which clothes/toys are
for boys and which are for the girls.
It is easy to distinguish which clothes remain for boys and which for girls because of the different
colors and styles. Commonly, a boy's clothing consists darker colors of blue and green while girls
contain softer and lighter colors of pink and purple. Girl infant apparels usually have feminine prints
such as flowers, bows, hearts and cute sayings such as "Daddy's Little Princess". Girls also
generally wear additional accessories such as bows, bracelets, and earrings as boys might wear caps.

From the time the child is born the parents are making choices as to what he or she wears, eats, and
even plays with. These choices mainly depend on the gender of the child. Most parents would put
their baby girl in pink or purple colors whereas parents of a baby boy would dress him in blue or

first, a person that identifies as genderqueer is a person with a gender identity separate from the

Gender identity is an extremely personal part of who we are, and how we perceive and express
ourselves in the world. It is a separate issue entirely from sex or sexual orientation. There are dozens
of dynamic and evolving terms related to how people identify. "Although Children are taught that
their genes decree whether they will grow into men or women, people are not born socially or
culturally female or male. Like race and ethnicity, gender can be thought of as socially constructed"

Every time when she is "free" without diaper and her clothes she is just happy, but when she see her

As mainstream media is now embracing the once taboo topics of sexual orientation and gender
identity as popular culture utilities, psychologists and medical professionals are still researching the
biological, psychological, and social differences between the two. Since the phenomena of ¨coming
out," or openly identifying as a sexual orientation or gender identity besides heterosexual or
cisgender respectively, is a relatively recent anomaly, there is limited but contemporary research.
The analyses done so far indicate a universal and clear consensus signaling the separation and
unrelated nature of sexual orientation and gender identity. The American Psychological Association

The development of our gender identity is influenced by both the biological nature of a person and

As has been noted with the similarities between sexes when considering the chromosomes, we are
left to conclude that the environmental influences are more affecting of sexual differentiation, but
only on a superficial or general premise. For instance, if it is encouraged for girls to be more
nurturing, they will grow up thinking that is how they are supposed to act. That does not mean that
nurturing is caused by the hormones, but rather is caused by the environmental influences. Apart

Reflection On Gender Identity
Attending school throughout the eighties and nineties, I never encountered many issues centered
around diversity in school. There were a couple girls that dressed what some may call "boyish"
occasionally, but we never really thought much of it growing up. It was in the 12th year of my
education career that I came in contact with a student who looked and sounded like a boy, but wore
the clothing of a girl. Being confused by this when I first laid eyes on him, I remember asking the
student's mother his name so that I could accurately determine his gender. His mother politely
replied, "Her name is Marquise." He was living as, what Serano (2013) called as a "trans woman." It
was then that I realized what gender identity and expression truly was. Gender according to
Catalano and Shlasko (2013), carries a vast range of cultural and social meanings and individuals
decide the way in which they wish to express their gender to others. This student was definitely born
a male but was clearly identifying himself with the female population. Once I got to truly know the
student, I learned that he was taking hormones in order to start the journey of changing his identity
and referred to himself as being transgender. It was truly surprised at how well our students treated
him throughout his four years with us. Additionally, students and teachers alike treated him with
respect and gave him just as much attention as the rest of the student population. I, myself, learned
to see him as just another student but for some reason I could never bring myself to calling him a
"her" or refer to him as "she." It made me feel as if I was saying the wrong thing. Although, many
people look at transgender individuals and see it as weird, Marquise taught me so much about how
looking and acting different from society's normal is actually completely normal. Being around

The construction of a self–identity can be a very complex process that every individual is identity is
developed through the lenses of cultural influences and how it is expected to given at birth. Through
this given identity we are expected to think, speak, and behave in a certain way that fits the mold of

values. I intend to analyze the process in which individuals learned and internalized their respective
gender identities, through their cultural background. I will be conducting a set of interviews with the
intention to compare my experience as a self–identified male of Mexican descent, to the experience
of another male character of Japanese heritage in order to understand how we come to self–identify
as masculine in diverged cultures. In this paper, I argue that the construction of gender identities is a
direct consequence of societal influential factors such as family values; values that reflect the
individual's culture. This analysis will not only utilize evidence from these identity formations, but
also in explaining why and how these self–identities were constructed using both theoretical sources
and empirical studies as a framework.

We all should receive the same respect regardless of our gender identity.
People should feel free to express themselves the way that they feel inside without going against
societal expectations. If we think about it, this should be the norm, we all should be able to express
ourselves freely because this a free country, am I wrong? According to Sara, "[T]ransphobic bigots
justify taking our rights and ostracizing us from society by saying that transgender people are
sexually deviant..." (Sara 2017). We cannot judge or reject these individuals because they should
have the same rights as other human beings. If we treat them different or see them different, we are
just devaluating their self of existence. Someone may argue that they can express themselves
however they want, but that does not necessarily mean that society will accept such behavior as
appropriate or normal. Society would consider "appropriate" or "normal," things that we have seen
in our culture as morally acceptable, in this case, that there are only two gender identities. Some
particular religious' groups even consider members of the LGBTQIA+ community as individuals
who are acting against God's will, which should not be the case. In a religious perspective, we are

Transgender can be defined as a person whose self–identity does not conform precisely to
conventional notions of the male or female gender. This self–identity problem can usually be
accompanied by numerous forms of treatment to change ones' physical appearance, and make it
more consistent with their identified gender identity. In many cases, the individual can identify with
the gender of the opposite sex to the point one believes that he or she is a member of that gender
group trapped in the wrong body. This is also called Gender Dysphoria or formerly known as
Gender Identity Disorder. The person with gender dysphoria or GD at times does not know that he
or she have an actual disorder but more of a general discomfort with his or her biological sex. This
also creates complications in their everyday life, when they are unable to interpret their feelings or
rationalize problems they experience in a social setting (Gender Dysphoria, 2014).

Gender Dysphoria is usually defined by constant strong feelings of identifying with the opposite sex
and displeasure with one's own biological gender. These feelings can ultimately result in emotional
distress or impairment. People who have been or are diagnosed with GD often feel that they are not
