Lab 1: Title
Purpose
This section may be entitled “Purpose,” “Question,” or “Problem.” If you use “Purpose” as a title, then you must tell why you are doing the experiment (what do you hope to accomplish?). If you use “Question” as a title, then you should pose a question rather than writing a statement. For example, “Do environmental factors play a role in the prevalence of organism color in leafhopper populations?” If you use “Problem” as a title, then you should state the nature of the problem you are trying to solve.
Hypothesis
In this section, you make a prediction about the outcome of your experiment. The hypothesis statement is typically written as an “If…then….” statement. For example, “If I roll a ball on dirt and grass, then the ball will roll faster on ____ because…..” You fill in the blanks and finish the statement. It is always preferred that you provide the reasoning for your prediction (“because”), but is not absolutely necessary. Your hypothesis should be specific to the lab material / investigation, not based on the understanding of the material of completion of the lab.
