Those who have followed my work for awhile know that I am one who believes strongly in
highlighting young people in the entertainment industry. During season three of When Calls the
Heart, I had the opportunity to briefly interview both Ava Grace Cooper and her brother, Christian
Michael Cooper. While both were featured on the show, my chat with Christian happened before his
character, Timmy, even appeared on the show. As a result, I was not aware of the caliber of acting

I must admit I am unfamiliar with your show Cult. What can you tell us about the show?
Well, I had a recurring role, and the show only ran one season. I was in eight of the fourteen
episodes. What I do remember from the show is walking with my "mom" on the show, and a car
came up and I was pulled into this car, and we drove away really fast. I also remember being in a
box when I was kidnapped. I remember I couldn 't see out of the box, and I told them that it was too
dark. Then they got a tool and cut a bigger hole in the box so that I wasn 't scared.
Christian, that means even at the age of five, you weren 't scared to speak up on set and tell the
adults about this potential problem. And they listened to you. That is really a great story. And since
that show, it looks like you 've been booking things pretty steadily.

It was quite a long time ago when I first auditioned for it, but I remember that it was a taped

Since its inception, Hollywood and the American entertainment industry have had an unprecedented
amount of influence over popular culture. America has set the standard in media, and its citizens
look to Hollywood not only for entertainment, but also for societal norms. Ideally, the content being

that diverse audiences can relate to, and include people with different perspectives to contribute to

However, my main caregiver was my mother, and this meant being surrounded with Japanese
culture at home. Growing up in between these different cultures and being an avid pop culture
consumer has made me more in–tune to how people of color–specifically Japanese or Asian people–
are portrayed in films and television and how my white peers interacted with it and reacted to it.
Before understanding how depictions of people of color in film and television affect how audiences
view race, what must first be considered is how people of color are being represented both on and
off screen. In an article discussing diversity in cultural production, Dr. Maryann Erigha, an assistant
professor of sociology at the University of Memphis, presents three types of representation to
examine: numerical representation, the number of people from a specific group that are working
either on–screen or behind–the–scene jobs; quality of representation, what kinds of roles are groups
filling; and centrality of representation, how central groups are to the industry's main institutions
(Erigha). The simplest way of examining the numerical representation for marginalized groups in
Hollywood is to compare the amount of people from a specific group that are working in the
industry to that same group's representative percentage of the American population. A study
conducted in 2014 by UCLA analyzed 172 films released in 2011 and 1061 TV shows aired in the
2011–12 season.

1. How did you hear about BCEC? Please describe any past involvement with BCEC.
I heard about BCEC through Facebook! I saw it on my invites page, and the club looked well suited
to my interests, as I have spent the last year and a half starting to work in the industry, and most
likely want to end up working in entertainment back in my hometown of LA.
I haven't had any past involvement, and all I can say is I regret not knowing about this club sooner!
2. Why are you interested in the entertainment industry, specifically film?
My initial interest in entertainment stemmed from the world I grew up in Los Angeles where so
many of my neighbors, friend's parents, and just general social community were involved in all the
facets of the industry. As I have gotten older, I have really found an interest in the business behind
film. From film marketing, financing, distribution to studio operations its all so fascinating. This
past summer I took a course at UCLA on the Business of Blockbusters, and I got to see all the
business related sides to entrainment, learn about everything from marketing to box office analysis,
and hear from well–qualified and respected professionals from different areas of the entertainment
industry.
People gather around entertainment, and everyday people can be overheard talking about their

Entertainment is one of the biggest and most popular industry that can have influence to the
audience. From movies, TV shows, and music, one can see the characteristics of hegemonic
masculinity when it comes to gender. Hegemonic masculinity is seen as a standard to define what a
"real" man is. It creates a gender hierarchy, which men that fits the "ideal" masculinity is dominant
over the rest of the genders. Women, men who do not fit the "masculine" characteristics, and others
are seen as "feminine" and therefore, inferior. The problem here is that few men and women fit into
the ideal gender, but we were taught and expected to look and behave like that.

The mass media has developed into a highly influential platform that relays information to
audiences all around the world, but are the images seen in advertisements and television, devaluing
individuals by labeling them under stereotypes? In order to truly understand the core of such a
question, it is important to first define and solidify some key terms. To begin with, what mediums of

Throughout the years, we have been made to believe that wildlife in the entertainment industry is
captivating. Even though these animals may seem to be happy and healthy, the truth is the majority
of these animals suffer a great amount of abuse. SeaWorld and the Circus have made a name for
themselves, by claiming that he/she provides a safe a friendly environment. However, what is not
shown during these performance acts is the abuse these animals suffer, or the amount of stress and
anxiety the animals are under. Wildlife in captivity for exotic animals can cause a serious amount of

roles and movies can be seen from virtually anywhere in the world. For example, the movie Ghost
in the Shell received a lot of criticism based on the fact that most of the cast was not Asian despite
the fact that the original source material was set in a futuristic–steampunk Tokyo comprised of
Japanese characters. This prompted a statement from the authors of the original source material
stating that they were okay with Caucasian actress Scarlett Johansson playing the protagonist
Motoko Kusanagi (Lachenal). Is it really okay to leave it like this though? Is it alright to just drop
the argument because the creator says so? I think not. An argument cannot be left alone only
because the creator says to especially because of the nature of the topic of race and ethnicity.

Diversity In The Entertainment Industry
In a study of 414 films and television series, only 33 percent of all characters were women, and only
28 percent were of racial minority status (Associated Press). Casting diversely in entertainment has
been an issue for years and has recently spawned many controversies such as the 2016 Oscar
Controversy where an outrage occurred due to a lack of minority Oscar winners. Many cultures and
races fell underrepresented and cast aside by film and television. The entertainment industry should
cast more diverse actors because it increases viewership, provides a broader perspective, and creates
a more realistic setting. By casting more diverse actors, the American entertainment industry is able
to increase viewership in both television and film. To begin with, diverse casting allows for higher

To illustrate, shows like Black–ish and Empire, with their predominantly African–American casts,
would not be able to tell the unique stories being told with a cast of all Caucasian actors. Another
excellent show that uses diversity correctly is Master of None, a Netflix original series. Master of
None is a relationship comedy that takes place in New York City; Aziz Ansari, an Indian–American
comedian, plays the lead, Dev. What makes this show noteworthy, however, is the fact that unlike
most television series, Dev is not an exaggerated stereotype. Lavanya Ramanathan, a reporter for the
Washington Post, said it best when she stated, "What's extraordinary about Master of None is that its
protagonist is a person of color who's simply, normal" (Ramanathan). He is able to provide a new
perspective, but at the same time he does not make himself seem unrelatable; furthermore, the show
addresses this topic by reminding the audience that viewers are able to relate to anthropomorphic
animals; thus, the audience surely can relate to people of
