Global sustainability
By: Abdullah Almuayli
Presentation
Pollution
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the
6. environment.
The contaminants leads to adverse environmental impacts.
Pollution leads to increased scarcity of resources.
The end result is unsustainable resource use and development.
Pollution can be defined as the introduction of foreign materials
to the environment leading to adverse effects to the existing
environment. When pollution happens, the available resources
are not usually safe for human consumption and cannot be used
for development. As a result, resource imbalance strikes leading
to unsustainable global resources use.
2
Deforestation
Deforestation is the permanent cutting down of trees to make
the land available for other uses like settlement and agriculture.
Deforestation affects the carbon and hydrological cycle.
This leads to an increase in the amount of carbon in the
atmosphere.
This then leads to unsustainable resource use and availability
affecting global sustainability.
The issue of deforestation has received a lot of concerns lately.
Deforestation is caused by continuous cutting down of tress to
make the land available for other uses without replacing them.
when trees are cut, the carbon as well as the water cycles are
affected. These may lead to global warming and climate change
thus affecting the availability of some resources globally. The
result of this is unsustainable resource use that then leads to
global unsustainability.
7. 3
Migration
Migration is the movement of people from one region to the
other.
When people move from one region to the other, there is a
similar transfer of resource demand from one region to the
other.
If this happens, the result is always a creation of an imbalance
in resource availability in these regions.
The end result is unsustainable resource utilization all over the
world.
Migration can be termed as the movement of people from one
point to the other as a result of both pull and push factors.
When people move, they usually transfer their demand for
resources thus leading to unstable resource use and utilization.
As this happens, there always results an unsustainable resource
use globally that ultimately affects development in one region
or the other in a number of ways.

Agriculture in Italy
Agriculture in Italy has greatly diversified regarding its main
characteristics. The area between Alpine and Apennine as well
as those of the central, northern and southern parts of the
country are the ones that have experienced this diversity to a
great extent. The diversification ranges from intensive and high
productivity farming of the regions in the northern to a situation
that is extremely marginal in the mountain zones as well as the
southern parts of the country. The country has a total land of
10.9 million ha. The top five crops that are produced in the
country include tomatoes, sugar beets, wheat, potatoes and
oranges. These crops are mainly produced for domestic
consumption (Alkon & Agyeman, 2011).
In the recent years, the Italian recession had decreased
significantly in the global trade volumes. The country’s export
had decreased to a great extent. However, the economy of the
country remained relatively strong as it remained top ten in
world’s leading countries in export volumes. The main crops
grown for export are fruits and vegetables such as apples,
barley, wine grapes, corn and olive oil. Its exports to Germany
are worth $ 47 904 million. In France, the exports are $ 43 462.
In the United States, the country exports $ 27,687 while in
Spain it is worth $ 27,687.
In the year 2014, Italy had imported item amounting to US
472.5 billion. This was a reduction as compared to her imports
in the year 2010 by $ 77.5 billion the top most imports from
Italy include; coffee spices and tea by $ 186.9 million from
India. Fruits and nuts by $ 685.6 are imported from Spain.
Dairy eggs and honey by $ 217.3 are also imported from Poland
9. and fish by $ 57. 2 million imports from Indonesia.
There have been various effects of agriculture in Italy. Because
of these impacts on the environment, the public and various
individuals should come together and find out measures to
reduce these effects. Serious environmental issues that are
related to the production of food in Italy include pollution of
water, change in the climate, and scarcity of water, degradation
of the soil and eutrophication of various water bodies. Apart
from these effects, there have also been concerns about loss of
biodiversity and habitats. Consumption of food is as well
associated with the bulk usage of global water in Italy and it as
well responsible for the generation of around one-fifth of the
greenhouse gas emissions (Hester & Harrison, 2012).
Because as a result of diversification of agriculture in the
country there has been growing and raising population, there
has been increased demand for food, energy and water. This
comprises of sustainable usage of natural resources that could
exacerbate geopolitical and social tensions.
Conclusion
The main effects of agriculture in Italy mainly arise from the
primary production stage. Agriculture has remained to be the
main source of environmental effects due to the usage of land
and degradation of soil, consumption of water pollution and
eutrophication. Monocultures also cause loss of biodiversity and
introduce hazardous chemicals mainly as a result of synthetic
mineral fertilizers and pesticides. According to the research on
the environmental impact of organic production, organic
farming produces uses less energy and has a clear biodiversity
benefit on agricultural land. Agriculture in Italy has got a
significant impact on the economy.

Assignment #1
9/2/2015
As a part of this assignment, I have to examine my ecological
footprint about my homeland country, but since I was not able
to examine my ecological footprint about Saudi Arabia, so I
decided to examine my ecological footprint about Canada. I
have lived there for 3 years. Thus, I had some useful
11. information to add in my first assignment.
As a part of step #2, I would like to summarize my ecological
footprint about Canada. First of all, I was shocked that that my
ecological footprint was 6.6, which is below the Calgary’s
average. It also seems that my current consumption requires an
area of productive land equivalent to 8.1 Canadian football
fields. Moreover, I was really shocked about the result that I
received after taking the test. Before taking the test, I thought
that my highest consumption in my ecological footprint is about
food, but after taking the test, it turns out that my highest
consumption in my ecological footprint is about services.
After taking the test, I have learned many things that will
accomplish my achievement towards global sustainability. First
of all, as shown in my ecological footprint, I have to reduce my
household energy use. For instance, use highly efficient bulbs,
and turn off thermostat when not occupied. Consequently, this
will save energy in my household. I also have to purchase
locally grown foods that require less transportation. Lastly, try
to minimize the one-time purchase goods. In another word, I
have to purchase goods that I can reuse it for a later time.
To sum up, I think the footprint calculator is very effective and
very measurable in terms of the three pillars. Because it gives
you information about your personal ecological footprint and
the average footprint for the rest of the country. It also gives
you recommendations about increasing the efficient way to cope
with your ecological footprint.
According to www.eureapa.net , it can be clearly seen that food
is the most consumption in all products. In addition of that,
when exploring more about food, I realized that people in Italy
are more into vegetables and nuts instead of animal products.
Hence, I think that it will effect the environment negatively.
You can refer to the picture below to verify the information.
12. According to www.footprintnetwork.org, it declares that “the
quality of country results varies”.
As you can see from the graph below, the footprint of Italy has
unstable trend throughout the period from 1961 to 2011. It also
scored the quality assessment 1-6 scale.
