Carter establishes a definition for integrity, "discerning what is right and what is wrong; acting on
what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying openly that you are acting on your
understanding of right and wrong." Based on the passage above, which of the following reflects the
correct use of brackets? "[W]hen I refer to integrity, I have something very specific in mind," states
Carter in his essay. It is important to remember that "[w]hen [he] refer[s] to integrity, [Carter has]

Preparing To Lead: My Leadership Action Plan
Preparing to Lead: My Leadership Action Plan
As a midshipman at the Naval Academy, my Leadership Purpose Statement is to influence those I
lead through my integrity and civility to accomplish the mission to develop them mentally, morally
and physically as future military leaders.
I define integrity as "doing the right thing even when no one is looking". My father, a 1986 graduate
of the Naval Academy and a Naval Supply Corps Officer in the fleet always said this to me and my
sister as we were growing up. Being raised with that motto, I have always tried to live by that level
of integrity. In our lessons on integrity, I took away that "Doing what is right, and being willing to
defend our actions, even at the sacrifice of ourselves, is the ... Show more content on

The experiences I learned from his leadership style will help me define my leadership as a First
Class midshipman in the Brigade. My father communicates well and helps the people he is around
have purpose, direction and motivation. He is no longer in the military. He now leads over a hundred
people at a consulting company that supports the Department of Defense and Homeland Security.
His integrity and civility make his leadership effective which has resulted in his business sector
being very successful and efficient. The people that work for him tell me how much they enjoy
working for him because of the way he makes them feel about themselves and as a team. Integrity
and civility are not easy traits to attain as a leader. Stephen Carter even characterizes that to attain
both integrity and civility is a struggle to attain and that you must become a student of both to
successfully lead with both. It takes self sacrifice and effort to do the right thing when no one is
looking. It takes strong character and discipline to treat others the way you would like to be treated.
I know how I felt growing up in my father's household and I see how he treats the people that work
for him. I have learned integrity and civility from him and although I have only been able to
demonstrate it to my fellow plebes up to this point at the Naval Academy, I plan to continue to
enhance these traits in my leadership style as a Youngster and eventually as a Firstie. I believe
people respond to the way they are treated by their leader. As a future leader at the Naval Academy I
believe both integrity and civility are traits that will help me successfully lead and successfully
fulfill my Leadership Purpose

the culture of disbelief Essay

THE CULTURE OF DISBELIEF
The culture of disbelief is a book written to people who are very interested in religious beliefs,
liberty and all the influence that religion cause into the public square. Carter argues that religion
should not be present in politics, education, and so on. . Moreover, Carter is not about one's person
beliefs, he makes demands of its adherents, and wishes some kind of hope for their lives. The
preface of this book shows perfectly with it's titles what is The Culture of Disbelief going to talk
about (e.g. How American Law and Politics Trivialize Religious Devotion). Therefore, it takes us to
the point where readers implied a connection between religion with law and politics. ... Show more

Society sometimes does not recognize that there are religious people that believe that God have
communicated to us by the Bible. Carter asks for freedom to those who can not stand it.
Separation of Church and State:
Carter says that religion needs to be autonomy, that we need a freedom of religion, an independent
moral voice, we need to take decisions to be able to be critical of the state, which is a vital role that
religion plays. " The idea of separating church from the state meant protecting the church from the
state, and not the state from the church"#. The exercise clause is present just to protect the people
from the government indifference with their religion, and the

religion. That is why this statement is a little bit confused for me.

The Parable Of The Sadhu Short Story
Integrity in "The Parable of the Sadhu" Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and having
strong moral principles. People always associated integrity with only honesty; however, honesty is
not equal to integrity. One can be honest and yet still lacking in integrity. In "The Insufficiency of
Honesty," Stephen L. Carter claims that integrity requires three steps: discerning what is right and
what is wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying openly that you
are acting on your understanding of right and wrong. On the other hand, Bowen McCoy shares a
story of when he was unexpectedly intruded by an ethical dilemma during his expedition to the
Himalayas, in his article, "The Parable of the Sadhu." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McCoy and all the people he encountered ultimately failed the second requirement. They were all
aware that the Sadhu needed help and it is dangerous to leave him alone; nonetheless, the Sadhu was
left alone as none of them are willing to be responsible as it would be inconvenient for them. Last
but not least, the third step for integrity is saying openly that you are acting on your understanding
of right and wrong. This step reminds people that a person of integrity can be trusted. McCoy said to
Stephen that he had done enough on his part for the Sadhu. Even though he openly said it, he failed
to understand the right and wrong. Carter stated that moral responsibilities cannot be avoided by
simply stating the intention to ignore them. People often use honesty as their excuse to avoid
obligations. Besides that, Stephen also asked McCoy if their behavior would have changed if the
Sadhu had been someone they are familiar with. In my opinion, McCoy would act totally different if
that was the case as people tend to be better with someone familiar or from the same group. Nobody
was willing to provide more help to the Sadhu as he looked like he would not benefit them;
therefore, they left him in order to complete their expedition. As said by Stephen, McCoy was just

World Bank Knowledge Management
Organizational learning and knowledge–sharing are key competitive characteristics of nowadays
global organizations (Teale, 2003). The development and exploitation of the intangible capabilities
of an organization is a successful approach for increasing organizational responsiveness to the
continuously changing external environment (Little, 2002). Being challenged by the dynamic world
of complex needs and expectations, organizations need to effectively and efficiently manage their
internal base of resources. An essential organizational resource is knowledge (Choo, 2002). It is not
only an essential resource itself but a facilitator and stimulator of new internal capabilities (Little,
2002). The aim of this assignment is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(2002) undervalue their importance, as they are seen as nothing more but tools to facilitate data
transaction. In this context the Bank applied an upgraded system as 'IP' that would rather focus on
the direct communication of employees through virtual visual conferences than just a database to
store and retrieve information. It was an approach to transfer bids of tacit knowledge through
communication and experience sharing (Newell et al., 2002). Despite this meaningful technological
approach the World Bank implemented, Cohen and Prusak (2001) argue that video conferencing is
unable to transfer tacit knowledge and cannot represent even a small fraction of the way people
communicate. Furthermore, technologies are seen as an expensive and time consuming facility
(Young & Nie, 1996). It is also doubtful whether companies manage to efficiently exploit their
technological resources. In the present case, the World Bank maintains three identical in their
characteristics online knowledge sharing platforms which may raise the question of how useful they
are for the organization. Social Technologies can promote explicit knowledge sharing but to get use
of its internal capabilities the Bank needed to illicit the 'hidden' potential of its employees. As
Polanyi (1973) describes people can know more than they can tell. To elicit the implicit and tacit
knowledge of its employees the bank organized communities of practice that

Stephen Carter The Inssufficiency Of Honesty Summary
Integrity and honesty are often thought to coincide: many people believe that is true. Author Stephen
L. Carter wrote "The Insufficiency of Honesty", which was published in the Atlantic Monthly in
1996. He argues that a person can have honesty without ever reflecting back on whether or not what
they believe is necessarily true, which is not exactly integrity. Carter builds his credibility in his
writing by stating that he was giving a university commencement address, citing statistics and using
prominent sources. He also gives well thought out examples to help strengthen his argument that
one can be honest without having integrity. In his writing, Carter first explains what he means by
honesty by giving his definition and then Sissela ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She says that she understands. In due course she does wind up pregnant. If we believe, as I hope we
do, that the man would ordinarily have a moral responsibility toward both the child he will have
helped bring into the world and the child's mother, then his honest statement of what he intends does
not spare him that responsibility." This example is one of many that he makes in his appeal to
pathos. A man has a responsibility to his child, whether he stated he didn't want it before or not.
Carter explains that if honesty were to be substituted for integrity, then he were to say that he had no
intention do something, then he is not obligated to do it. However, Integrity does not allow us to
avoid such a thing. This builds his appeal to pathos by giving an example that many of us face or
have faced in the real world. Carter effectively makes appeals to both pathos and logos in the middle
sections. This content has many examples that will make the reader contemplate both sides of an
example that help adequately explain how someone can be honest well lacking integrity. He uses an
appeal to pathos when he speaks of the dying husband and how he finally unburdens himself while
he was dying by telling his wife that he was unfaithful once thirty five years ago. However, now the
wife will not be able to exactly remember him in quite a loving way as before. However, the
husband has unburdened himself and can now die with an easy conscience, but his

Summary Of Joan Didion's On Morality
Within the short story "On Morality", Joan Didion examines and redefines morality in a manner that
strays from defining it as a feeling to do right than wrong through the tales of a driver, diver, and
widow from Death Valley. Didon attempts to convey to the audience that each individual defines
and views mortality differently. She provides a great example of the latter that dumbfounded me, "'I
followed my own conscience.' 'I did what I thought was right.' How many madmen have said it and
meant it?" Thus, the matter of what is right and wrong in universal standards does not exist even
though, mortality is shared amongst one another. "On Being A Cripple" a written narrative by Nancy
Mairs discusses her hardship with finding her identity as

Personal Values Affecting The Relationship Between Good...
As personal morals influence motivations and intentions, free will ceases to exist because of the
relationship with one's morality, whether that be impacted by religion, media, or the law. Similar to
this, personal morals affect the definition of good and evil, making these terms different to each
individual. Seven articles show how free will truly does not exist amongst society, how morality
influences lives, and how good and evil is an intuitive choice within each person. Society's
expectations, media, law, and religion all contribute to one's own morals, which constrict their free
will with each new moral they consume. This reveals that free will is non–existent because your
morals inhibit you to make choices you truly want. In the article by Nathaniel Hawthorne titled

These words are what society thinks of when someone describes something as "good" or "evil". The
dictionary definition for each word is to be morally correct, and to be immoral. If this is the
definition, good and evil is subject to the individual, since everyone has different moral beliefs. In
the article The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson, she reveals, "We lie. We all do. We exaggerate,
we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare people's feelings, we conveniently forget, we keep
secrets... Like most people, I indulge in small falsehoods and still think of myself as an honest
person," (Ericsson 1). To cite the ninth commandment, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy
neighbor," which translates to "do not lie" would show that to someone who might be devoutly
Christian, lying is immoral, therefore evil. But to Stephanie, and most of the world, a little lie would
not make someone Satan. Nobody is purely good or evil, much like a ying yang, because everyone

Antislavery In Huckleberry Finn
In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Jim, a runaway slave, faces many
obstacles in his journey to freedom. Huck Finn, a teenage boy and friend of JIm, is also facing
difficulty with whether or not he should be helping Jim escape slavery. Many characters throughout
the novel struggle to deal with conflicts. A conflict that people in today's world are struggling to deal
with, is the controversy over whether Huckleberry Finn is a racist novel or not. All–in–all,
Huckleberry Finn is profoundly antislavery. Twain creates Him as a man who is brave and heroic.
Twain also demonstrates that the blacks and whites relationship is not the only concern over racism,
and reveals the voice of a slave attempting to survive in a white slave culture.
Jim, a black man who is just as brave and heroic as white man. Jim, who is a runaway slave, is
fighting for not only is freedom , but hi family's as well. In "Getting past Black and White" by

Carter claims that "Jim was a first in American fiction– a recognition that the slave had two
personalities; "the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual: Jim,
the father and the man." Twain uses several examples to show that Jim, the voice of slavery, the
voice of survival and the individual, faces difficulties and pain. In Huckleberry Finn, one small
example of the individual in pain, trying to survive, is where Jim hides while Huck is in town. "I
poked into the place away and come to a little open patch as big as a bedroom all hung around with
vines, and found a man laying there asleep– and, by jings, it was my old Jim!" (143). This was the
moment where readers could truly realize the conditions that the individual had to face while
escaping slavery. This is the moment where people should feel sympathetic for

Summary Of Reading For Pleasure Is In Painful Decline By...
The main idea of Stephen L. Carter "Reading for Pleasure Is in Painful Decline" is that today's
generation are not reading books that make them use their intelligence and that literature skills are
important to our society's democracy. Throughout the book the author explains to us on how books
are important to us. The author also uses many rhetorical devices such as allusion and anecdote.
The author argues that people are not reading books that are hard. "I don't mean reading that
challenges our ideas; I mean reading that calls upon significant intellectual resources." The quote
explains how the author wants people to read books that make us think about the book we are

Coach vs Mentor
Mentoring and Coaching: The Roles and Practices
Dr. Norhasni Zainal Abiddin, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia
ABSTRACT Mentoring and coaching are all part of educational training to develop people in the
professions. There are several similarities and differences in the main issues involved in mentoring
and coaching. They are related to the selfdevelopment, professional growth and career development
of the mentee/coachee. In establishing the approaches to be used, care must be taken to ensure that
each person understands the limits or boundaries of the relationship. Indeed, it may be as important
to indicate that there is a way out of the relationship as it is to encourage its development in the first
place. Supervisory approaches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally, it is a popular approach in education and in business. In a recent survey of Fortune 500
companies, 96 percent of executives identified mentoring as an important developmental tool, and
75 percent of them said it had played a key role in their career success (Heinz 2003). A mentor is
identified as someone who teaches the student in a personal and close long–term relationship that
allows critical concentration on the task performance (Brown and Krager 1985; Kirkham 1993).
Before the 1990s, most authors used the word 'supervisor' in reference to a mentor at school with the
meaning of someone who directs or oversees and watches over students so as to maintain order
(Gardiner 1989), but increasingly, we see references to the mentoring of young people entering the
teaching profession. Bullock (1988) was of the opinion that a mentor should establish a good rapport
with his protégés, assess their needs in consultation with other interested and appropriate parties,
and end the mentoring relationship at the appropriate time and in an appropriate manner. Thus, each
mentoring arrangement is unique, and its particular nature will be established according to the
personalities of the two individuals concerned (Mountford 1993). The relationship facilitates
another's personal growth and can also encourage and enable learning in order to maximise the
mentee's potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want

Effective Approaches in Leadership and Management
Nurses are crucial in providing quality care in the health care industry. It is imperative to maintain
the proper staffing ratio to ensure that nurses can maintain high quality care for their patients.
Studies have shown that the increasing workload of nurses can be linked to increased patient deaths,
medical errors, hospital–acquired infections, longer hospital stays, and many other complications.

"The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority"
–Kenneth Blanchard
A leader can help the staffing ratio issue by creating a vision. With this vision, they are able to create
a plan that incorporates new ideas to find solutions. Leaders are risk takers and like to challenge
others to formulate ways of doing things better. Leaders like to build relationships and promote
those around them and help them develop so they as well as the company can grow. (Coonan 2007)
Since leaders are not always in manager roles, they often are the ones who are working at the
bedside and can help staffing ratios because they can base them on the individual needs while taking
into account the training and experience of the nurse taking care of those patients. They are trying to
look out for the best solution for everyone involved. Leaders act as guides to those around them
rather than try and control others. Leaders are the ones who stand up for others. These kinds of
leaders are able to inspire and motivate people to achieve solutions to problems.
"Management manages by making decisions and by seeing that those decisions are implemented." –
Harold S. Geneen

In his essay, Stephen L. Carter talks about the concept of integrity. He begins his essay with the
story that took place in his early childhood when he faced the distinguishing of "right" and "wrong"
for the first time. Carter experienced a shame of being a cheater, which stayed with him throughout
his life. As a child, he cheated to win, and as he says, nowadays it's much more important in our
society to win than to play fair, and it is a big problem. It's easier for people to say what others want
to hear rather than what they actually mean. Talking about the whole shame for lie concept he
mentions that no one wants to experience the embarrassment, but often we still choose to lie

Reflecting on Personal Identity and Global Citizenship
The importance of educating others on global citizenship is a very important factor to consider when
it comes to human rights for all. This type of subject is an important subject, especially when it
comes to educating others on global citizenship. Each and every individual should be educated on
global citizenship in a such way to bring about a world of greater justice. Global citizenship is a
voluntary association with a concept that signifies ways of thinking and living within multiple
cross–cutting communities–cities, regions, states, nations, and international collectives. This is all
due to the practice of global citizenship. According to Hans Schattle (Schattle, 2009, p. 3), "perhaps
more than any other concept, the idea of global citizenship has emerged since the late 1990s as a key
strategic principle in higher education."

America Needs Moral Leadership to Bring Justice to an Unjust World
Injustice is unavoidable and all over the world, justice is violated. Almost everywhere people are
persecuted in their own countries, the innocent are sent to jail, and people are victims of violent
crimes. These acts of injustice affect the global community and inhibit the spread of equality and
righteousness. In "The Letter from Birmingham Jail," Martin Luther King says that "Injustice
anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere . . . Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly"
(143). Everyone wants to be treated fairly but there are places in the world where atrocities take

free again.
Next, America has become a symbol of freedom and equality to the entire world. Throughout its
short history, the US had many great moral leaders, such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther
King. Probably the most recognized moral leader was Martin Luther King. He strove to bring justice
towards the African American community by rallying together thousands of people and peacefully
protesting the common injustices that made their lives miserable. He also spoke against the
hypocrisy of the church for not treating everyone equally. He stated that "The church is a weak,
ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound" (153). Martin Luther King inspired many Blacks not to
accept injustice and he inspired many whites to reform. According to Martin Luther King, "All
segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality"

taking shortcuts in jobs, sneaking to get that extra cash, and allowing themselves the moral right to
be immoral to others. While this might seem like society taking a downward turn, however, it is
usually the environment that encourages them to step out ethical lines. The problem is created by the
environment generated by the American desire for success that allows and encourages the increasing
moral licensing. It is getting increasingly challenging to do the ... Show more content on

Since families were able to recreate themselves from an unhappy environment to a more pleasant

A Glint of Light in the Dark
The human race, Italian philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli describes in his work, The Qualities of the
Prince as, "they are ungrateful, fickle, simulators and deceivers, avoiders of danger greedy for gain
(46)." From this analysis we can see that we all have our less than admirable qualities, some people
are greedy, some egotistical, and others envious. I confess that I have dealt with these and I know
that I am by no means perfect. So, where do these feelings stem from? It is from our natural born
instinct of self–preservation, it is what brings out the drive in us all that causes us to take any
measure to keep our well–being protected and in our best interest. We are capable of committing so
many types of atrocities, we kill, we steal, and we cheat, though there is many more that could be
named, I believe that these are the most apparent sins that stem from our instinct of self–
preservation and previously mentioned less admirable qualities. And sadly, the truth is that any
average person is capable of committing these horrible sins not just criminals or the outcasts of
society. But there is hope for the human race, because someone one is capable of committing great
evil is also capable great good, and even in the most horrible of places, there is good to be found. An
excellent example of this can be seen in William Wordsworth's poem "Among All the Lovely Things
My Love Had Been", Wordsworth describes a scene while riding his horse on a stormy night, "A

David Brooks : Fanatics And Fanaticism
Fanatics and fanaticism have been written about and covered in many different ways by many
different sources, but the one question they fail to adequately answer is "How do you deal with a
fanatic?" In David Brook's article "How to Engage a Fanatic" he covers this exact topic. This article
was written during a turbulent time period, and Brooks takes advantage of that. He mentions Brexit,
the Catalan independence movement, and dealing with extremism on college campuses. Brooks
cites his personal experience as well as Stephen L. Carter's book Civility as evidence towards his
argument. He surmises that we cannot avoid fanaticism, as it is too prevalent given our current time,
and that we must find a way to approach it. The core of Brook's ... Show more content on

Brooks then continues by playing "devil's advocate", bringing up the opposing side's views to
showcase why his views are correct. Brooks cites Benjamin DeMott's 1996 essay for the Nation,
saying "when you are arguing with a thug, there are things much more important than civility." This
strategy cleverly combines pathos and ethos by presenting an emotional connection, then
immediately undercutting it with evidence from a more relevant or trustworthy source. This can be
seen when Brooks then brings up Yale Law professor Stephen L. Carter and his book Civility.
Brooks uses Carter's book as the ethos to argue that it is not through violence or force that fanatics
will be stopped, but rather through love and understanding. It may sound cliché, but he explains it
well, stating "If you succumb to the natural temptation to greet this anger with your own anger,
you'll just spend your days consumed by bitterness and revenge." (Brooks, 2017) He includes this to
establish a new precedent for combatting fanaticism. His logos builds on itself as he makes claims
like "You'll teach the world something about you...their fanaticism [emerges] from wounded pride, a
feeling of not being seen" (Brooks, 2017) Carter's book works well with Brook's previous pattern of
pathos as well, bringing in further reinforcement to Brook's argument. The interconnectedness of
Brook's argument not only gives it strength, it allows the reader to make more sense of it. As each

America Needs Gun Control Essay
For years proposals for gun control and the ownership of firearms have been among the most
controversial issues in modern American politics. The public debate over guns in the United States
is often seen as having two side. Some people passionately assert that the Second Amendment
protects an individual's right to own guns while others assert that the Second Amendment does no
more than protect the right of states to maintain militias. There are many people who insist that the
Constitution is a "living document" and that circumstances have changed in regard to an individual's
right to bear arms that the Second Amendment upholds. The Constitution is not a document of total
clarity and the Second Amendment is perhaps one of the worst drafted ... Show more content on

Hysterical gun owners oppose any gun control and often think that the government wants to take
away their rights to own firearms. When will they learn that most sane people want gun control not
gun prohibition. Guns are a part of America's way of life and that is a fact that many people agree
on. There is another fact that all American should agree on also, guns need to be controlled with
good, fair, and balanced regulations. There is a way to respect the rights of hunters, sportsmen, and
legitimate gun owners. There are powerful arguments on both sides of the equation. It is not a
question of whether guns should be banned, but it is a question of finding a balanced with some
government regulations to ensure that guns do not get into the wrong hands of felons, criminals, and
the mentally ill. Why not banned assault weapons? These guns are designed for one thing only and
that is to kill human beings. Why not close loopholes that allow buyers at gun shows to evade
mandatory background checks? Although background checks are required by federally licensed
firearms dealers in the United States when selling guns to their customers, sales between private

and how the data could be collected.
Talent management metrics link human capital investment to financial performance. According to
management gurus Huselid, Becker and Beatty 2005, there are critical challenges to successful
workforce measurement and management. Talent management metrics are evolving. As
organizations increasingly focus on talent management strategies, they seek ways to validate these
initiatives and measure their business impact. Many firms are beginning to include talent
management in their dashboards or scorecards. Scorecards provide a clear "line of sight" to
organizational strategic goals by linking talent management to objectives and performance
appraisals. Measures may include factors such as employee survey results and turnover. Companies
also create their own measurements to fit their organizational cultures. Increasingly, talent
management technology to house and track talent management strategies is becoming available.
Databases with all relevant data in one location can result in significant time savings for staffing,
such as the ability to quickly identify talent for open positions. Some vendors include talent
management solutions in their HR suites. Strategic talent management software may help manage

Summary Of The Parable Of Sadhu
The Parable of Sadhu Paper Analysis Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong
moral principles. The word 'integrity' is often misunderstood in any business organization.
According to Stephen L. Carter, the term 'integrity' requires three steps: discerning what is right and
what is wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying openly that you
are acting on your understanding of right and wrong. In this paper, I am going to compare the
elements of Stephen L. Carter's definition of "integrity" against the decisions made by Bowen
McCoy in his account of hiking in Nepal, "The Parable of the Sadhu." In "The Parable of Sadhu,"
McCoy and his friend, Stephen went on a hiking trip in Nepal. There were other groups of hikers
from different countries; New Zealand, Switzerland and Japan. One of the New Zealanders found an
almost naked Indian holy man, a Sadhu. He found him lying on the ice, shivering and suffering from
hypothermia. He then left him with McCoy. McCoy took his pulse and suggested to treat him for
hypothermia. Stephen and the Swiss gave him clothing and got him warmed up. The Japanese gave
him food and water. The Sherpa carried him down to the sun and pointed out the easy trail toward
the hut. The Sadhu was well enough to throw rocks at a dog. Everyone did something for the Sadhu
but they do not even know whether the Sadhu is now alive or dead. The question here is, did McCoy
act with integrity? I believe that McCoy did not

Who Was Abraham Lincoln Impeached?
Abraham Lincoln was a very successful and effective leader, but it is hard to know whether or not
he would have been impeached. We can all think about outcomes but unless it happens we will
never know who is right and who is wrong. There are facts to conclude a probable outcome to either
side of the argument of whether he would have been impeached or not. One side of the story is that
he turned his back on the freemen of the south, but on that same statement he did free slaves.
Depending on who you stand behind blacks, whites, or both is where you stand on the argument. If
you rather have whites as the superior race you might be on the side where he is impeached for
having blacks and whites equal. If you are an African American or stand behind the African
Americans you might have kept him in office. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), now in its 5th edition,
defines attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as persistent cycles of inattention and/or
hyperactivity–impulsivity that inhibit an individual's ability to function or interferes with their
development (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Inattention is said to manifest though
behaviours such as wandering off and difficulty in maintaining focus. Hyperactivity on the other

extent that it wears out others. To be diagnosed with ADHD according to the DSM–5, six or more

Firstly, the position in favour of the change will be considered, and in particular – the similarity
between fully diagnosed ADHD subjects and late onset ADHD subjects. The position against the
change will look at the issue from a biological standpoint arguing that raising the age of onset to 12
years may not necessarily capture ADHD in individuals; but rather, biological changes as a result of
puberty. According to the DSM–5, an age earlier than 12 was not selected to be part of the
requirement for the diagnosis due to the difficulty for adults to establish precise childhood onset
retrospectively (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Changes to the age of onset to before 12
years old is justified, in part, by the similarity between fully diagnosed ADHD subjects and late
onset ADHD subjects. A study by Applegate et al. (1997) compared a sample of youth who met the
criteria for ADHD and displayed impairment before the age of 7, with youth who met the criteria but
did not display impairment. They found that the age of onset varied depending on the ADHD
subtype. 18% of combined subtype and 43% of the predominantly inattentive subtype had no
manifestation until after they were 7 years old. This brings into question the validity of the DSM–4's
definition of the age of onset. Another study by Faraone et al. (2006) observed that subjects with late
onset ADHD resembled individuals with the full diagnosis in terms of comorbidity,

Essay The Insufficiency of Honesty
Stephen L. Carter links integrity and honesty. There are three constraints discussed in this essay.
First, integrity does require a degree of moral reflectiveness. Second, Integrity may cause conflict
that is must be resolved. It does not necessarily produce or protect interpersonal harmony. Third, a
person who has integrity can be trusted. It does not avoid the restructuring of social structures and
associations, because it leaves the matter to exercise of interpersonal authority.
He states that one cannot have integrity without being honest but one can certainly be honest yet
have little integrity. He also states that honesty can actually be used quite selfishly. In fact, there are
key differences between honesty and integrity:

his female employees tasks that he believes they'll be more apt to apply themselves. Although he's

Honesty without integrity can also lead to moral disasters. Well, honesty may be important but not

with what Stephen L. Carter says about a person having honesty but not integrity. There are also
some white lies present. Sometimes saying the truth or telling everything you know might hurt

Carter also speaks of an "American Core" that has six values necessary for good character:
Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, and citizenship. He believes that honesty is
honored too highly which allows one to escape from responsibilities. Integrity does not permit easy

The unique blend of southern slave holder and northern abolitionist influences in the formation of

Levi Coffin was born on October 28, 1798 on a farm in New Garden, North Carolina, the only son
of seven children born to Quaker parents, Levi and Prudence (Williams) Coffin.
Because his father needed him to work on the farm, young Levi received the bulk of his education at
home. His home schooling proved to be a good education. As a young boy growing up in North
Carolina in the early 1800's, Levi saw firsthand the reality of slavery. One day while he was out with
his father helping to chop wood by the roadside, a group of slaves, handcuffed and chained together,
passed by on their way to be sold in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana. When Levi's father asked
them why they were chained, one of the men sadly replied: "They have taken us away from our
wives and children, and they chain us lest we should make our escape and go back to them."1 After
the group of slaves had gone, young Levi wondered to himself how he would feel if his father were

The incident by the side of a Guilford County road marked the first stirring of Levi Coffin's
sympathy for the oppressed. Together with a strong hatred of oppression and injustice in any form,
Coffin later said these "were the motives that influenced my

disorderly conduct after he threatened a woman delivering food he had ordered at his home.
Maxwell was the first Major League Baseball player to take a knee protesting police brutality and
injustice. Maxwell was quoted in the article, "My decision had been coming for a long time...The
only way we can come together is by informing...To single out NFL players for doing this isn't
something we should be doing–I felt it should be a little more broad." Maxwell was refused service
during a banquet by Trump supporter, Matt Henry. Huntsville city councilman Devyn Keith, also at
the banquet, witnessed the occurrence, complained to Henry's superior and removed Henry from
waiting on that particular table. I plan to use this article as one example of what a

The Insufficiency Of Honesty By Stephen L. Carter
Integrity is having morals and following the right path and I believe honesty does have a big part in
this. The word integrity is something that many talk about yet don't do. An ethical dilemma is when
a person's integrity is put to the test. In the essay The Insufficiency of Honesty written by Stephen L.
Carter he writes about integrity and honesty and his definition of having integrity. Carter says that to
have integrity you know right from wrong and do the right thing from the beginning. He uses an
example were the husband tells his wife in his death bed that he cheated on her. The husband was
being honest to relief himself and he left his wife with the burden that he carried when he cheated. I
believe that Carters point is that being honest is not always acting with integrity ... Show more

Integrity isn't always being honest because people can be completely honest with one another but it
might not be the right thing to do. While reading Carters essay I realized that integrity and honesty
are different I always believed that they were both the same. I believed if you were honest you were
acting with integrity. I recall an occasion that happened a few months ago at work that I consider to
be an ethical dilemma. Two of my coworkers invited me one night to hang out after work they were
going to stay and go out on the roof. I felt a little doubtful at first because it didn't seem like a good
idea since no one was supposed to be there after hours and I knew my mom was waiting for me at
home. I said yes because I didn't want to seem

Reading For Pleaser Is In Painful Decline By Stephen L....
Reading for pleasure seems to be a concept that as time goes on becomes not as well–known as
before. Long term effects of not reading in our in our society could become a problem. Stephen L.
Carter believes that the decline in reading is not a good thing for the United States. In the article
"Reading for Pleaser Is in Painful Decline" by Stephen L. Carter, he shows significant evidence that
the state of reading has declined in the United States. Carter shares his thought on the decline of
reading in the United States by saying, "Being a nonreader is nothing to be proud of. A rise in proud
nonreaders would bode ill for the nation's future" (Carter 88). Carter believes that people should
read for pleasure not just for academic purposes. He also believes that by not reading would be not
for the nation's future. By not reading he is afraid that the country or world will become a place ...

Carter says because of the report he believes that we should read more for pleasure by saying, "that
active and engaged reader lead richer intellectual lives than nonreader and that a well–read citizenry
is essential to a vibrant democracy" (Carter 22). Carter also says that reading books that challenge us
it good for us because it makes us use our intellectual sides more. While some people will say that
there is not enough evidence to say that reading has or will have a negative effect on our society, it is
important that young readers find reading enjoyable and not a chore. Others may say that Carter is
too biased to say that a decline in readers is a problem while other may agree because of the
evidence that the reports say. Even though there is only one report that he references is clearly say
that not reading for pleasure could and will most likely cause problems for our society in the

Preparing To Lead: My Leadership Action Plan Preparing to Lead: My Leadership Action Plan As a midshipman at the Naval Academy, my Leadership Purpose Statement is to influence those I lead through my integrity and civility to accomplish the mission to develop them mentally, morally and physically as future military leaders. I define integrity as "doing the right thing even when no one is looking". My father, a 1986 graduate of the Naval Academy and a Naval Supply Corps Officer in the fleet always said this to me and my sister as we were growing up. Being raised with that motto, I have always tried to live by that level of integrity. In our lessons on integrity, I took away that "Doing what is right, and being willing to defend our actions, even at the sacrifice of ourselves, is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The experiences I learned from his leadership style will help me define my leadership as a First Class midshipman in the Brigade. My father communicates well and helps the people he is around have purpose, direction and motivation. He is no longer in the military. He now leads over a hundred people at a consulting company that supports the Department of Defense and Homeland Security. His integrity and civility make his leadership effective which has resulted in his business sector being very successful and efficient. The people that work for him tell me how much they enjoy working for him because of the way he makes them feel about themselves and as a team. Integrity and civility are not easy traits to attain as a leader. Stephen Carter even characterizes that to attain both integrity and civility is a struggle to attain and that you must become a student of both to successfully lead with both. It takes self sacrifice and effort to do the right thing when no one is looking. It takes strong character and discipline to treat others the way you would like to be treated. I know how I felt growing up in my father's household and I see how he treats the people that work for him. I have learned integrity and civility from him and although I have only been able to demonstrate it to my fellow plebes up to this point at the Naval Academy, I plan to continue to enhance these traits in my leadership style as a Youngster and eventually as a Firstie. I believe people respond to the way they are treated by their leader. Carter argues that religion should not be present in politics, education, and so on. . Moreover, Carter is not about one's person beliefs, he makes demands of its adherents, and wishes some kind of hope for their lives. The preface of this book shows perfectly with it's titles what is The Culture of Disbelief going to talk about (e.g. How American Law and Politics Trivialize Religious Devotion). People always associated integrity with only honesty; however, honesty is not equal to integrity. One can be honest and yet still lacking in integrity. In "The Insufficiency of Honesty," Stephen L. Carter claims that integrity requires three steps: discerning what is right and what is wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong. On the other hand, Bowen McCoy shares a story of when he was unexpectedly intruded by an ethical dilemma during his expedition to the Himalayas, in his article, "The Parable of the Sadhu." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McCoy and all the people he encountered ultimately failed the second requirement. They were all aware that the Sadhu needed help and it is dangerous to leave him alone; nonetheless, the Sadhu was left alone as none of them are willing to be responsible as it would be inconvenient for them. Last but not least, the third step for integrity is saying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong. This step reminds people that a person of integrity can be trusted. McCoy said to Stephen that he had done enough on his part for the Sadhu. Even though he openly said it, he failed to understand the right and wrong. Carter stated that moral responsibilities cannot be avoided by simply stating the intention to ignore them. People often use honesty as their excuse to avoid obligations. Besides that, Stephen also asked McCoy if their behavior would have changed if the Sadhu had been someone they are familiar with. In my opinion, McCoy would act totally different if that was the case as people tend to be better with someone familiar or from the same group. Nobody was willing to provide more help to the Sadhu as he looked like he would not benefit them; therefore, they left him in order to complete their expedition. The development and exploitation of the intangible capabilities of an organization is a successful approach for increasing organizational responsiveness to the continuously changing external environment (Little, 2002). Being challenged by the dynamic world of complex needs and expectations, organizations need to effectively and efficiently manage their internal base of resources. An essential organizational resource is knowledge (Choo, 2002). It is not only an essential resource itself but a facilitator and stimulator of new internal capabilities (Little, 2002). In this context the Bank applied an upgraded system as 'IP' that would rather focus on the direct communication of employees through virtual visual conferences than just a database to store and retrieve information. It was an approach to transfer bids of tacit knowledge through communication and experience sharing (Newell et al., 2002). Despite this meaningful technological approach the World Bank implemented, Cohen and Prusak (2001) argue that video conferencing is unable to transfer tacit knowledge and cannot represent even a small fraction of the way people communicate. Furthermore, technologies are seen as an expensive and time consuming facility (Young & Nie, 1996). It is also doubtful whether companies manage to efficiently exploit their technological resources. In the present case, the World Bank maintains three identical in their characteristics online knowledge sharing platforms which may raise the question of how useful they are for the organization. Social Technologies can promote explicit knowledge sharing but to get use of its internal capabilities the Bank needed to illicit the 'hidden' potential of its employees. • 13. Stephen Carter The Inssufficiency Of Honesty Summary Integrity and honesty are often thought to coincide: many people believe that is true. Author Stephen L. Carter wrote "The Insufficiency of Honesty", which was published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1996. He argues that a person can have honesty without ever reflecting back on whether or not what they believe is necessarily true, which is not exactly integrity. Carter builds his credibility in his writing by stating that he was giving a university commencement address, citing statistics and using prominent sources. He also gives well thought out examples to help strengthen his argument that one can be honest without having integrity. In his writing, Carter first explains what he means by honesty by giving his definition and then Sissela ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She says that she understands. If we believe, as I hope we do, that the man would ordinarily have a moral responsibility toward both the child he will have helped bring into the world and the child's mother, then his honest statement of what he intends does not spare him that responsibility." This example is one of many that he makes in his appeal to pathos. A man has a responsibility to his child, whether he stated he didn't want it before or not. Carter explains that if honesty were to be substituted for integrity, then he were to say that he had no intention do something, then he is not obligated to do it. However, Integrity does not allow us to avoid such a thing. This builds his appeal to pathos by giving an example that many of us face or have faced in the real world. Carter effectively makes appeals to both pathos and logos in the middle sections. This content has many examples that will make the reader contemplate both sides of an example that help adequately explain how someone can be honest well lacking integrity. He uses an appeal to pathos when he speaks of the dying husband and how he finally unburdens himself while he was dying by telling his wife that he was unfaithful once thirty five years ago. However, now the wife will not be able to exactly remember him in quite a loving way as before. However, the husband has unburdened himself and can now die with an easy conscience, but his ... Summary Of Joan Didion's On Morality Within the short story "On Morality", Joan Didion examines and redefines morality in a manner that strays from defining it as a feeling to do right than wrong through the tales of a driver, diver, and widow from Death Valley. Didon attempts to convey to the audience that each individual defines and views mortality differently. She provides a great example of the latter that dumbfounded me, "'I followed my own conscience.' • 17. Personal Values Affecting The Relationship Between Good... As personal morals influence motivations and intentions, free will ceases to exist because of the relationship with one's morality, whether that be impacted by religion, media, or the law. Similar to this, personal morals affect the definition of good and evil, making these terms different to each individual. Seven articles show how free will truly does not exist amongst society, how morality influences lives, and how good and evil is an intuitive choice within each person. Society's expectations, media, law, and religion all contribute to one's own morals, which constrict their free will with each new moral they consume. This reveals that free will is non–existent because your morals inhibit you to make choices you truly want. In the article by Nathaniel Hawthorne titled Young ... Many characters throughout the novel struggle to deal with conflicts. A conflict that people in today's world are struggling to deal with, is the controversy over whether Huckleberry Finn is a racist novel or not. All–in–all, Huckleberry Finn is profoundly antislavery. They are related to the selfdevelopment, professional growth and career development of the mentee/coachee. In a recent survey of Fortune 500 companies, 96 percent of executives identified mentoring as an important developmental tool, and 75 percent of them said it had played a key role in their career success (Heinz 2003). A mentor is identified as someone who teaches the student in a personal and close long–term relationship that allows critical concentration on the task performance (Brown and Krager 1985; Kirkham 1993). Before the 1990s, most authors used the word 'supervisor' in reference to a mentor at school with the meaning of someone who directs or oversees and watches over students so as to maintain order (Gardiner 1989), but increasingly, we see references to the mentoring of young people entering the teaching profession. Bullock (1988) was of the opinion that a mentor should establish a good rapport with his protégés, assess their needs in consultation with other interested and appropriate parties, and end the mentoring relationship at the appropriate time and in an appropriate manner. Thus, each mentoring arrangement is unique, and its particular nature will be established according to the personalities of the two individuals concerned (Mountford 1993). The relationship facilitates another's personal growth and can also encourage and enable learning in order to maximise the mentee's potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be (Brown and ... Leaders like to build relationships and promote those around them and help them develop so they as well as the company can grow. A Glint of Light in the Dark The human race, Italian philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli describes in his work, The Qualities of the Prince as, "they are ungrateful, fickle, simulators and deceivers, avoiders of danger greedy for gain (46)." From this analysis we can see that we all have our less than admirable qualities, some people are greedy, some egotistical, and others envious. I confess that I have dealt with these and I know that I am by no means perfect. So, where do these feelings stem from? It is from our natural born instinct of self–preservation, it is what brings out the drive in us all that causes us to take any measure to keep our well–being protected and in our best interest. We are capable of committing so many types of atrocities, we kill, we steal, and we cheat, though there is many more that could be named, I believe that these are the most apparent sins that stem from our instinct of self– preservation and previously mentioned less admirable qualities. But there is hope for the human race, because someone one is capable of committing great evil is also capable great good, and even in the most horrible of places, there is good to be found. Brooks cites Benjamin DeMott's 1996 essay for the Nation, saying "when you are arguing with a thug, there are things much more important than civility." This strategy cleverly combines pathos and ethos by presenting an emotional connection, then immediately undercutting it with evidence from a more relevant or trustworthy source. This can be seen when Brooks then brings up Yale Law professor Stephen L. Carter and his book Civility. Brooks uses Carter's book as the ethos to argue that it is not through violence or force that fanatics will be stopped, but rather through love and understanding. It may sound cliché, but he explains it well, stating "If you succumb to the natural temptation to greet this anger with your own anger, you'll just spend your days consumed by bitterness and revenge." His logos builds on itself as he makes claims like "You'll teach the world something about you...their fanaticism [emerges] from wounded pride, a feeling of not being seen" (Brooks, 2017) Carter's book works well with Brook's previous pattern of pathos as well, bringing in further reinforcement to Brook's argument. • 51. Summary Of The Parable Of Sadhu The Parable of Sadhu Paper Analysis Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. The word 'integrity' is often misunderstood in any business organization. According to Stephen L. Carter, the term 'integrity' requires three steps: discerning what is right and what is wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong. In this paper, I am going to compare the elements of Stephen L. Carter's definition of "integrity" against the decisions made by Bowen McCoy in his account of hiking in Nepal, "The Parable of the Sadhu." In "The Parable of Sadhu," McCoy and his friend, Stephen went on a hiking trip in Nepal. There were other groups of hikers from different countries; New Zealand, Switzerland and Japan. One of the New Zealanders found an almost naked Indian holy man, a Sadhu. He found him lying on the ice, shivering and suffering from hypothermia. He then left him with McCoy. McCoy took his pulse and suggested to treat him for hypothermia. Stephen and the Swiss gave him clothing and got him warmed up. The Japanese gave him food and water. The Sherpa carried him down to the sun and pointed out the easy trail toward the hut. The Sadhu was well enough to throw rocks at a dog. Everyone did something for the Sadhu but they do not even know whether the Sadhu is now alive or dead. The question here is, did McCoy act with integrity? I believe that McCoy did not ... We can all think about outcomes but unless it happens we will never know who is right and who is wrong. There are facts to conclude a probable outcome to either side of the argument of whether he would have been impeached or not. One side of the story is that he turned his back on the freemen of the south, but on that same statement he did free slaves. Depending on who you stand behind blacks, whites, or both is where you stand on the argument. If you rather have whites as the superior race you might be on the side where he is impeached for having blacks and whites equal. The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), now in its 5th edition, defines attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as persistent cycles of inattention and/or hyperactivity–impulsivity that inhibit an individual's ability to function or interferes with their development (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Inattention is said to manifest though behaviours such as wandering off and difficulty in maintaining focus. Hyperactivity on the other hand, manifests in an extreme relentlessness at a given activity, or persisting with an activity to the extent that it wears out others. Firstly, the position in favour of the change will be considered, and in particular – the similarity between fully diagnosed ADHD subjects and late onset ADHD subjects. The position against the change will look at the issue from a biological standpoint arguing that raising the age of onset to 12 years may not necessarily capture ADHD in individuals; but rather, biological changes as a result of puberty. According to the DSM–5, an age earlier than 12 was not selected to be part of the requirement for the diagnosis due to the difficulty for adults to establish precise childhood onset retrospectively (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Changes to the age of onset to before 12 years old is justified, in part, by the similarity between fully diagnosed ADHD subjects and late onset ADHD subjects. A study by Applegate et al. (1997) compared a sample of youth who met the criteria for ADHD and displayed impairment before the age of 7, with youth who met the criteria but did not display impairment. They found that the age of onset varied depending on the ADHD subtype. 18% of combined subtype and 43% of the predominantly inattentive subtype had no manifestation until after they were 7 years old. This brings into question the validity of the DSM–4's definition of the age of onset. Another study by Faraone et al. First, integrity does require a degree of moral reflectiveness. Second, Integrity may cause conflict that is must be resolved. It does not necessarily produce or protect interpersonal harmony. Third, a person who has integrity can be trusted. It does not avoid the restructuring of social structures and associations, because it leaves the matter to exercise of interpersonal authority. Honesty without integrity can also lead to moral disasters. Well, honesty may be important but not sufficient for integrity. Integrity is both essential and significant. It is acceptable and one will agree with what Stephen L. Carter says about a person having honesty but not integrity. There are also some white lies present. Sometimes saying the truth or telling everything you know might hurt somebody. Harm may not be the intention but positively the effect. One day while he was out with his father helping to chop wood by the roadside, a group of slaves, handcuffed and chained together, passed by on their way to be sold in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana. When Levi's father asked them why they were chained, one of the men sadly replied: "They have taken us away from our wives and children, and they chain us lest we should make our escape and go back to them."1 After the group of slaves had gone, young Levi wondered to himself how he would feel if his father were taken away from him.
