2. History of Dennis Media
• Founded in the 1960’s by Felix Dennis, but didn’t take off until the
launch of Kung Fu Weekly in 1974. At it’s height Kung Fu Weekly was
published in 14 countries and in 11 languages.
• In the 1980’s Dennis started to publish computer magazines.
• During the 1990’s they produced men’s magazine Maxim.
• This information shows that the company has been around for 50
years. It shows they can adapt to changes in the market with the
different genres of magazine and styles meeting the demand of the
consumers. Also magazines being published in different countries and
in different languages so they have a wider audience.
3. Information on Dennis Publishing
• In 2012, Dennis Publishing, produced more than 50 magazines, it increased its
group pre-tax profits by 35% year-on-year from £4.1m to £5.5m. Group operating
profit climbed almost 12% to £4.9m. Group turnover, excluding share of joint
venture revenues, had a slight increase year on year to just over £70m. Revenues
including joint ventures climbed 3% to £77.7m. Operations in the UK accounted
for almost 84% of total revenues.
• In the 1970’s the main source of income was Kung Fu magazines.
• In the 1980’s the main source of revenue was computer magazines.
• Present day there is a wider scope of magazine catering for different tastes.
• In 2005 they launched Maxim radio.
• Over the years Dennis publishing has slowly increased it’s revenue stream with
different magazines starting with starting with kung fu and computing and now a
wider range, helping maximise profit. Also with new media it shows it can adapt
to change in trends.
4. Examples of the magazines Dennis publishes
• This is a sample of the magazines Bauer publish. The sample has a wide
range of magazines, this helps with it’s revenue stream because they
cater for multiple tastes. They have a wide range of products, examples
of these are Carbuyer aimed at men and people of that interest and
CrossStitcher which would be aimed towards women. Also they have
other various hobby themes giving them the widest range of audience.
This would increase revenue stream significantly.
5. Summary
• We see that the Dennis media company appears to be a medium
sized company and not as large as Bauer or Time Inc. Although it has
a wide range of output for magazines. However they have a limited
range and are missing out on music, which I would aim towards
pioneering to help maximise profit in these areas.
