1. I THINK THEREFORE I AM METAL
A metal/rock music magazine aimed towards 14-25 year
olds and aimed at the fans of more hardcore metal.
Treatment sheet.
By Dylan Smith
2. DESIGN
My magazine will be promoting the metal/rock genre. I will be including
discussions of how bands have changed and evolved such as the band Bring Me
The Horizon has gone from death core to normal rock. I will include interviews
with band members on how the genre has changed and what they think will be
the next big thing. I am going to include up to date lists of concerts and bands
touring in the UK. The magazine will have the masthead across the front of the
page behind the main image. The main image will be in the centre of the page so
the reader can see what the main story is about This will give priority to the
main image to get the consumers attention. The colour scheme is going to be
urban because urban is the theme of the rock/metal genre and their rebellious
nature, giving the reader something to identify with. My magazine title is I Think
Therefore I Am Metal. This is a unique title because it goes against the metal
genre stereotype of people with lower intelligence, as it shows they are thinking
about the music they are listening to. There will be sell lines placed around the
front page. The font used would be Cambria, which is the basic text used here, as
this is easy to read. The genre of the magazine will be rock/metal. I believe there
is a gap in the market for this type of magazine.
HOUSE STYLE
The font used on the title will be fighting spirit which links with the rebellious
nature of the rock/metal genre, also the masthead will be in uppercase lettering
to make it stand out more. The font fighting spirit would give the reader
something to identify to because of the rebellious nature of rock and metal.
The colours used in this magazine will be mainly colours linked with the urban
theme such as black, grey, red, purple and brown etc…These colours as you can
see are used on the Kerrang magazine which is also published by Bauer media.
3. TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience this magazine will be aimed at is the rock/metal genre. This
will be aimed at both male and female, as this would increase the revenue stream
by not being targeted to one gender. The age range the magazine will be aimed at
will be 14yrs to 25 years. This co-insides with the Kerrang magazine although,
my magazine is more hardcore than Kerrang, so catering to a different audience.
COVER INFORMATION
The magazine will be published weekly to keep the reader informed with
important information about the rock/metal scene. Each issue of the magazine
4. will cost £2; this is because it makes the magazine accessible to all. If it was more
expensive the younger audience would not be able to afford to buy it weekly and
this could lose part of the target audience and affect the revenue stream. For the
first few months I would expect my magazine not to sell too many issues because
it is new and unknown, but once readers become familiar with it I expect it
would increase in sales. The magazine would not just be restricted to hard copies
but would also have digital issues so people can read the magazine online.
PUBLISHING HOUSE
The publishing house to publish the magazine would be Bauer media. The reason
I would choose this publishing house is because they have experience with rock
magazines as the publish Kerrang. Even though they publish Kerrang I believe
my magazine would still be successful because of how Kerrang has changed over
the years from rock to pop punk. My magazine would link with the older fans and
people who are into the heavier music. Also Bauer has lots of products that could
advertise my magazine, such as radio and music channels. I could have chosen
Dennis publishing as they don’t have a music magazine and there is a gap in the
market, but they don’t have any experience with the rock/metal genre. This
could be seen as a risk and could lower the success of the magazine.
