3.1 Building Floor Plans
Figure 4: Second floor plan highlighting the selected space
Figure 5: Enlarged floor plan of central interactive space
This space is located on the second floor at about the center of the building. Windows are
placed at the south facade of the building which allows sunlight to diffuse into the space.

3.2 Daylighting Analysis
Total area of enclosing surfaces (m2

Transmittance value of glass, T Clear double glazing = 0.7
Approximate reflectance value, R White ceiling and light-coloured walls = 0.5

(1 − 0.5)

Based on the table for daylight factor and distribution in M.S. 1525, the space has adequate
uniform daylighting with the average value of 4.95%, a good distribution of daylight.
Figure 6: Daylight and artificial lighting contour simulated from Autodesk Revit 2017
7. 7 | Building Science II (BLD61303 / ARC3413)
The daylight contour diagram shows sunlight penetrates into the space from the exposed facade
and the level gradually becomes lower as it reaches the back end of the deep space at 3.00pm,
1st July 2017.
Due to the positioning of windows on the south facade, daylighting will most likely only be
available during the afternoon of a day. Hence, it is necessary to install artificial lighting
fixtures to allow the space is well-lit throughout the time of the day.

Figure 7: Reflected ceiling plan showing the arrangement of luminaires
There are 42 light fittings to illuminate the 80.99m2
of reading area to achieve 300 lux that is
required by M.S. 1525 with the sufficient level of illuminations to allow users to have good
visual quality while reading books.
With the luminaires being of direct illumination, they are spaced at about 1.35 to 1.38 metres
apart, which is within the calculated distance.

3.4 Permanent Supplementary Artificial Lighting of the Interior (PSALI) Scheme
The 42 light fittings are controlled by 3 switches. In the morning, switch 3 (1 row on) needs to
be turned on as shown in Figure 8. When daylight level drops, switch 2 (3 rows on) turns on to
replace switch 3. At night, switches 1 and 2 (5 rows on) are turned on as shown in Figure 9.

recommended illumination levels at about the center but the levels gradually become lower
towards the corners of this space.
