Regardless of the decade or the country a person lives in, there seems to be a reckless disregard for
the toll a war can take on human lives. When the Alamo was fought back in February 1836, it was
about the independence of Texas from Mexico. In retaliation of the death and destruction of human
life, Sam Houston retaliated in April and killed 630 Mexican soldiers and took General Santa Anna
prisoner (Tindall & Shi, 2010). This was the start of the independence of Texas and the quest for
annexation into the United States, which ultimately led to the Mexican–American War of 1846–

The belief was that America had a God–given right, or destiny, to expand the country's border from
the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean (Lee, 2011). Tension arose between the US and Mexico in
1846 after an attempt to purchase the California and New Mexico Territories was rebuffed over a
border dispute. In Texas, the situation worsened when the southern border was disputed. Mexico
claimed the border at the Nueces River, while Texas claimed the border at the Rio Grande. President
Polk wanted to goad the Mexicans into a conflict to obtain Texas while also securing New Mexico
and California, however; it was essential that Mexico commence it (Tindall & Shi, 2010). On May
9, 1846 the Mexicans attacked US soldiers, President Polk's scheme worked. On May 13, 1846
President Polk signed the declaration of war. The Mexican–American War had begun.
The Outcome With no actual war plan, the Mexican war was fought on four fronts – southern Texas,
central Mexico, New Mexico, and California (Tindall & Shi, 2010). The military on both sides were
ill prepared for fighting the war. The US Army consisted of roughly 7,000 soldiers, while the
Mexican forces consisted of 32,000 soldiers. By the time the war was over the number had risen to

If you looked at a map of North America in the 1820's the countries would look a lot different.
Mexico was as large as the United States, stretching from Guatemala in the south to Oregon in the

Polk became President as the trouble with Mexico was happening. In 1846 under Polk's orders the
troops of General Zachary Taylor were sent to the Rio Grande. The US considered the Rio Grande to
be the new border between Mexico and the US but the Mexicans believed the border was farther

What is Manifest Destiny? How did Manifest Destiny impact the Mexican–American War of the
1840s?
Manifest Destiny in the 19th century was a belief that American settlers were destined to expand and
move across the North American continent to the Pacific Ocean which occurred out of a want and
need to conquer and explore new lands and establish new borders to spread their culture, traditions,
ideologies and institutions. It is the belief that the United States had a God given right to civilize and
occupy the whole continent.
The term was first made mentioned by writer and editor John L Sullivan in 1845 where he stated
that it was the right of the United States to possess and overspread the whole continent.
As it relates to the Mexican American war the idea of Manifest Destiny had a huge impact and part
to play in the scenarios that led to the war even though the United States and Mexico already had
their fair share of territorial issues.
In order to understand fully the impact that Manifest Destiny had in the Mexican American War it is
necessary to first be aware of how the Americans arrived into Texas, how Texas achieved
independence and how Manifest Destiny was used as the driven force to further obtain the lands.
Texas in 1821 was part of Mexico when Mexico won its independence from Spain. After the
Mexicans gained independence the lands were lightly populated, they lacked the people to make
communities, equipment to settle and resources. In order to help develop parts of its vast territory
the Mexicans invited and encouraged settlers from the United States to come to Texas to take up
lands. Mexican leaders had hoped that these settlers would eventually become Mexican citizens,
develop the lands without the usage of slaves, obey their laws and also be converted to the main
religion of Mexico which is the Roman Catholic faith. They also hoped that these new citizens
would then be expected to defend their land from possible invasions. This was the main reason for
the encouragement of American settlement in Texas.
Obviously this backfired as the invited United States settlers remained loyal to their former home

My Marker Moments This paper will detail the journeys of my life that lead to my marker moments.
Each marker was born out of a circumstance or ah–ha moment. A moment that opened my mind and

Our ecosystem is described depending on the location we are located in. There is different plants,
animals, and environments in different environmental regions. For this paper we are focusing on the
six different biomes structures we have in the state of Texas. The first biome I am going to discuss is
the Central Prairies and Woodlands biome. This biome is located in the middle of biome 2 and 3

During the start of the battle in 1846, when James K. Polk declared war against the Mexican's, the

Mission Corpus Christi de la Ysleta, the first mission in Texas, was established by Antonio de
Otermín and Fray Francisco de Ayeta in 1682 and was maintained by Franciscans for christianizing
the Tigua Indians. The Tigua came as refugees and captives with the former Governor of New
Mexico, Antonio de Otermín on his retreat to the El Paso area after his unsuccessful attempt to
recover New Mexico in the winter of 1681–82 during the Pueblo Revolt. La Misión de la Ysleta del
Sur, consecrated in 1682, was built by the Tigua (Tewa, Tiwa) speaking peoples originally from

In 1846–1848 was the first time the U.S would fight a war on foreign soil, it was called the
Mexican–American war. At this time Mexico was just starting to develop into a government and was
extremely confused and leadership was split between decisions. While the U.S government was
head over heels about pushing the country's borders farther and farther across North America with
only expansion in his mind. President James K. Polk faith was in one thing and one thing only to the
Manifest Destiny. He believed that the country shouldn't be limited to just the Atlantic coastline that
it should be connected to the Pacific Ocean as well. It began alongside the Rio Grande. Mexico
controlled Texas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico in 1835. In 1836, Texas was
the first Mexican territory that gained its independence from them. The United States originally
believed that another state would cause major issues because one it wasn't controlled by the
government and there was a lot of unknown politics. Texas was another major slave state and most
of the major northern states didn't believe slavery should be allowed. Another reason was because

We booked our excursion in advance before arriving at Montego Bay. We were going to be visiting
Dunns River Falls and park which included a sky lift that took us seven hundred feet up. We met

along the Rio Grande. On May 11, 1846, President Polk asked Congress to declare war on Mexico,
stating the following: "After reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United
