Mezzo Social Work
In the field of social work there are different types of groups that we will eventually be working
with. Because the field of social work is so big, it is broken down into groups. These groups are
micro and mezzo. Both of these types of groups are very different from each other yet these types of
groups can be beneficial to individuals and families who are in need of some assistance. Micro
practice is a level of practice in which social workers work in. In the field of social work, micro is
the practice that typically involves the direct contact with the individuals or families. A social
worker who is working in the micro level tends to work with low income individuals, individuals
who suffer from addictions such as alcohol and other drugs

Socio-Erapo-Social-Work Theory And Social Work
Introduction "Throughout the social work profession, there is ongoing interest in building a social
science agenda that can address the complex practice–based questions faced by social work
professionals today," says Matto and Goltzman (2010). As a social worker it is vital, to use our tools
and skills we have learned in order to assist our clients to the best of our ability and knowledge.
Social workers can use models and theories such as the bio–psycho–social model, development
factors, as well as, theoretical perspectives in order to gain a firm understanding of the individual's
environment and how it effects their development. These theories have helped to attempt us to
understand and explain human behavior, relationship, and social issues; however, this theory has
taught social workers what we practice on an everyday basis and how we interact and intergrade
with society through, evidence based practice helps understand human behavior. Emma is a five–
year–old girl who has experienced a significant amount of trauma for her age, in both educational
and home environments. As a result, Emma struggles with behavioral issues that have brought forth
possible developmental delays. Emma, struggles academically and struggles to communicate
effectively with classmates. She has an open child abuse case as well as experiences the effects of
parental divorce.

Information the social worker gathers can help inform the rest of the client's healthcare team, as well
as inform them about how best to treat their illness, manage the disease, and even how they can best
interact with the client. They can even help the client weave their way through the healthcare system
and find local resources to help the client manage day–to–day life. [ (Careers, 2006) ]
Education Requirements
According to College Board, social workers are required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree.
Acceptable bachelor's degree programs for entry level jobs include the bachelor's degree in social
work (BSW), as well as sociology, psychology and related fields. However, most jobs will require a
master's in social work (MSW). The Council on Social Work Education recognized 467 bachelor's
programs and 196 master's programs in June 2009. Accredited bachelor's degree programs require a
minimum of 400 hours of supervised experience, whereas master's degree programs require 900
hours of supervised experience. [ (CollegeBoard.org, 2012) ]

Reflection On Social Work
I've now been at my placement for over a month and have experienced many different opportunities.
Over the last few weeks I learned about the process of facilitating a care conference with family
members and the resident. I learned how to write up notes about the care conference to chart.
Another learning experience I discovered was the process of guardians for residents who cannot
make their own decisions. My supervisor and I sat down to discuss the process and went through
paperwork on how to become a guardian. I learned a lot about Power of Attorney's during this time
and the legal work behind guardianship. Later, my supervisor said I'd be able to go to a guardianship
court hearing to watch the process unfold. I'm looking forward to that so I can see the whole picture
of the guardianship process. I got to experience what is called a "departure" at Bethel Home. A
resident had passed and the staff received the family's permission for the departure ceremony. The
staff gathered in the hall and said a prayer with the family, and then they sang "Amazing Grace." It
was something I had never experienced before and it was very emotional for the staff and the family
members. It was a helpful way for the family and staff to receive closure. Over the past month I am
beginning to understand the flow of Bethel Home. I am starting to get a feel for what the social
worker's responsibilities are and an understanding of other positions. I'm starting to ask more
questions and I'm

The Levels Of Social Work
Micro–level social work involves working with individuals, whereas, macro–level social work
involves improving conditions on a larger scale, for groups of people such as a community. The
levels of social work practice are not only related, but they influence each other and often display
characteristics of a cause and effect relationship. This essay will explain how the levels of social
work practice influence each other, followed by examples of this influence, particularly focusing on
attachment theory. In conclusion, this essay will demonstrate how the relationship between the
social work levels of practice can affect a social worker's ability to stay in compliance with the
social work code of ethics. Macro–level social work is comprised of the individuals that are treated
on the micro–level. The evidence based practices are the most widely used techniques on the micro–
level and they became evidence based because those practices had the highest success rates from the
greatest number of people on a macro–level. During the class lecture, Bret argued that governmental
and work policies on the macro–level can have an effect on individuals or individual families.
Alternatively, micro theories can lead to macro policies.
An example mentioned in class lecture was the fact that the United States is largely driven by
attachment theory. This was a Freudian based theory developed to help understand orphans post
World War II. This micro–level theory ignored all other

The Implications For Social Work
This piece of writing is going to demonstrate an understanding of diversity, difference and also
discuss the implications for social work practice. It will include an understanding of theories and
concepts in relation to diversity where it will address the needs of diverse communities, individuals
and groups, exploring differences in relation to culture, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, social class
and economic wellbeing. It will also demonstrate an understanding of principle of working in an
anti–oppressive and anti–discriminatory way.
In relation to social work diversity does not simply mean difference in race and gender but also the
unnoticeable differences such as values, religion, social background, economic wellbeing and
political beliefs. It is important to acknowledge and understand diversity in social work as there
have been matters of holding assumptions and prejudices about an individual or group in the manner
they are treated and the services they receive. The issue with making assumptions and prejudices is
acknowledged in the Social Work Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) as domain 3 explains
that diversity is multi–dimensional, diversity can effect an individual's life experience in a positive
or negative way. This is due to the issues that occur with differences such as oppression,
marginalisation and alienation as well as the positive side which includes privilege, power and
acclaim (Capabilities within the PCF, 2014). "Anti– oppressive practice

Social Work Motivation
Our lives are books, every day is a fragment of a chapter. Each page illustrates a path taken, or a
battle faced. Every one of these books are unique, no two share the same story. My book may be
torn, damaged by time and pain, but mended by passion. My motivation to become a social worker
has been that tape and glue. It sealed every tear, and it gave every hardship a purpose. I faced these
misfortunes to learn what darkness is, to be shown my capacity to be the light in other people's lives.
My life has led me to social work, it has become my purpose.
Throughout the last few years, there have been several individuals who have guided me, supporting
me through hardships. These people are the only reason I have prospered to where I am today, ...

My current employment at the ARC has allowed me to work with individuals with developmental
disabilities. This job has given me experience in documentation and dealing with crisis. During this
past summer, I was able to do crisis intervention in a situation where individuals were in danger.
This work–related problem taught me to expect the unexpected and to always be prepared. I had
been covering a coworker's shift and was alone with one other employee. We had a client who had a
violent outburst and had threatened the life of my coworker. We sought out advice from our
supervisor but she was on vacation and did not respond. In typical situations, we would have
notified the authorities, but there were no weapons and her behavioral plan requests that we avoid
her being hospitalized. Since the altercation was with my coworker, I was left alone to de–escalate
the situation. I spent the next few hours with this client, I used her hobbies to create activities that
she would like. Once she found joy in her game of basketball, she calmed

The Social Work Profession
In the social work profession, the primary goal is to aid and empower individuals or families who
are faced with oppression, vulnerable in society, and living in poverty (Code of Ethics, 2008). Social
workers strive to improve the welfare of those who need assistance meeting their daily basic
essentials for survival. According to Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Basic needs, a person requires
five clusters to make them an integrated and self–motivated whole in society. The five clusters
include: physiological needs; security needs; social needs; self–esteem needs; and self–actualizing
needs (Aanstoos, 2014). The Code of Ethics is an important component that ensures that the
profession is held to its highest standard and to protect the community. In this paper, the intern was

This realization has taught me two important things. First, I learned about the importance of
distinguishing the role between facilitator and participant, which parallels to the necessity to set
professional boundaries with clients. This exercise allowed me to experience the need for such a
balance firsthand, and I am grateful for that. Secondly, I think that I need to challenge my lack of
self–confidence. This will be necessary, not only for my own wellbeing and peace of mind, but also
to adequately do my job as a social worker. If I am nervous to participate during topics that I am
unfamiliar or uncomfortable with, I will never grow as a person or as a worker. Pushing boundaries

I learned from my mistake, and now know how I will act differently in the future. Instead of waiting
for the conversation to die down enough for me to summarize and bring us back on topic, in the
future I will cut off the side conversations and ask that we give our respect to the person who was
speaking previously and was interrupted. Additionally, it was recommended to me by a fellow
classmate that facilitating the group so that speakers take turns sharing by going around the circle
might help to prevent this situation from happening again. As previously discussed, this method has
both benefits and drawbacks, however I witnessed how well the 'going around the circle' method
worked for eliminating interruptions and side conversations. I was hesitant about using this style of
group due to my own anxieties regarding knowing when my turn to speak was coming up, and so I
made the conscious decision to use a different style. However, after seeing how well this method
worked to prevent multiple conversations, I would be more open to using it in the future. Moreover,
there was an additional ethical concern that arose during the planning of our group. My partners and
I agreed that we wanted to be as prepared as possible, not only for the sake of our grade, but also for
the wellbeing of our participants. It was brought up after the first facilitation that these groups were
'real', counter to some's perception. This became extremely

Lgb Social Work
From above paragraphs we have learnt that lesbian, gay, bisexual youth face discrimination and
marginalization fostered by the social systems that serve them. As a result a social worker should
analyze prudently the use and misuse of power in the client's life (critical consciousness) and
promote engagement to foster social justice (Wagaman, 2016). As stated by Wagaman (2016), the
positive wellbeing of LGB youth can be ensured through such services in accordance with their
empowerment. In order to achieve that as a social worker, I should ensure the programs and
interventions for young LGB people to address structural inequities as well as I should create

It is understood from the above understandings, that due to violence, stigma and discrimination that
LGB youth face daily, the majority among them face adverse mental health such as depression,
suicide and anxiety. As an ally of LGB youth, I should foster awareness and dialogues by
participating in social activism in order to create safer space for LGB youth to break the social
isolation and provide a safe place to explore their self–identity (Vaccaro, August & Kennedy, 2012).
Meanwhile, I should consider the social stigma associated with LGB youth and be prepared to
counter the backlash from family members of youth, the heterosexual community and even the
supervisors (Lee & Brotman, 2015). Besides, this provided the awareness of human rights of LGB
youth in a larger community is more likely an initiative of individual worker (Lee & Brotman, 2015)
which requires proper wide angle knowledge on the issue and the above reflection equipped me
well. By fostering collective and individual empowerment, I as a social worker can enable the
vulnerable LGB youth to have control over the issues that affect them directly (Lee & Brotman,
2015). To achieve the same, I realise I should

Social Work Reflection
As a social worker, I am aware that though I may choose a particular field to work within, there are
few instances when I may pick and choose the specific client population I work with. Since my
social work journey began in 2008, a population that has been most difficult to serve objectively and
without bias has been the subset of clients that purposefully vote in elections against their own self–
interests, in particular, those that vote with the Republican Party. Raised in the evangelical South,
the ideology of the Republican Party is not foreign to those of us that live here as, "The South has
served as the ideological vanguard of Republicanism for decades" (Hood, 2015). A self–proclaimed
Democrat, I struggle with the paradox that a client utilizing governmental services to survive, would
vote against his/her own self–interests. I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and as is the case in most
African–American families, those closest to me voted overwhelmingly Democratic and taught me at
an early age that it was in the best interest of myself, family, and community to do so. I remember at
ten years old in the year 2000, attending an Al Gore rally and subsequently visiting our assigned
polling place to watch my mother cast her vote for the Democratic candidate. That introduction to
politics and similar experiences have shaped my perceptions and viewpoints of various social issues
and solidified my political beliefs as I transitioned into adulthood (Hood, 2015). After my work on

Social Work Essay
This essay will discuss social divisions; social exclusion and social inclusion, of which there are
many definitions and interpretations. Social divisions and Social exclusion has been around for
many years. Social exclusion was first noticed in France in 1970s in relation to people who fell
outside the range of the social insurance system, such as disabled people, lone parents and the young
unemployed (Townsend and Kennedy, 2004). Before 1997 Social exclusion was referred to as
'poverty', which means where people lack many of the opportunities that are available to the average
person (Palmer; 2010). However for the purpose of this assignment, it will focus on homelessness as

One interpretation of social exclusion comes from the European Commission's recent Joint Report
,which states
'social exclusion is a process where individuals are made to feel pushed out and prevented from
participating in society, due to poverty or lack of education. This may result in discrimination,
resulting in exclusion from jobs, an income, limited education, lack of social and community
opportunities and possibly feeling powerless' (Europa, 2003).
A structural view from Field (1989) and Dahrendorf (1987) who believe it is the structures in society
that exclude people. Another, interpretation from the Social Exclusion Unit London (SEU) states
social exclusion is 'a shorthand label for what can happen when individuals or areas suffer from a
combination of linked problems such as unemployment, poor skills, low incomes, poor housing,
high crime environments, bad health and family breakdown' (SEU 1997). Pierson (2010) suggests
that poverty, low income, lack of access to the job market, low or non existent social support, the
effect of the area and the exclusion from services are all ways to socially exclude people from
society. Thompson (2010) believes that social location affects people's life chances, due to where
people are born and where they live, arguing that people have no choice/control over what position
they are within society and depending on their location within the structure

placements in mental health to even education. One of the most prominent and growing areas in the
field is medical social work. According to the NASW, social workers in hospitals and medical
centers provide frontline services to patients with conditions spanning the entire healthcare
continuum. Medical social work includes settings such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes,

communion between Dr. Cabot and Ida led to the establishment of the first organized department of

continued to solidify their role in a medical location. "In time the health care team came to rely upon
social workers to clarify and address the psycho–social factors associated with diagnosis and
treatment of the patient's medical illness" (Gregorian, 2005).
In order to work in the field of social work, there are certain credentials and licensure that needs to
be met. The licensing exam is necessary for the field because it provides consumer protection. There
are two types of licenses for social work in New York State and they are Licensed Masters in Social

worker in New York State typically you must acquire a Masters in social work as well as licensure.
A few hospitals might hire you upon receiving your master's degree, but it is required to obtain the
licensure within a given time period.

individual past and see if their condition is trauma–related. It is the job of the social worker to

isolation when in jail or person and find the best solution for that issue. The solution to the issue
may not be what's written in a handbook or what we were thought, but sometimes we must find
alternate resolutions. While we may not have the answers to combat the issue; if as social workers
we could find the root cause of the issue that may help in the intervention process. To be more

Essay On Social Work
Social working is an industry so vast and extensive, but be so invisible if you have never been
exposed to it. Going into the social work field you have to have the value of selflessness and great
charity. The fields can range from someone off a GED to someone going for their second doctorate.
Wide range competitiveness, social workers' first step is getting on a licensing standpoint, but in
reality you need to make yourself an acceptable offering for the field of competition. Several

Social Work Values
Social work is a vast field with complex and numerous factors that can create confusion on what
exactly the social work profession is. Many theories and values have been assigned to social work
based scientific development and studies, assumptions and inherent beliefs, which can only add to
the chaotic understanding of the profession. Although the National Association of Social Workers
(NASW) was only founded in 1955, (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 113) social work has been
utilized for centuries, including Henry VIII of England who passed an act mandating, "local parishes
to take care of their destitute and create a procedure for the collection and administration of
donations to the poor." (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 92). Discussed in the following is a more
concrete definition of social work along with core values needed to be acquired to support the
practice of social work effectively. Social work can be defined as, "promoting social justice and
social change with and on behalf of clients." (NASW, 2008, Preamble) Simply put, social workers
are there to advocate and promote a more tolerable world in which everyone in society is treated
equally, with fairness and are provided the same opportunities. In addition to this definition, some
value assumptions have to be clearly made in order to support the profession of social work. The
values that best compliment the above definition are most suitably described in the National
Association of Social Workers (NASW) code of

Social Work And Social Work
The Common and Separate Ground On the first page of Keith–Lucas's, So You Want to be a Social
Worker he makes note of how Christianity and social work share a lot of the same values, because of
this the practice of social work can be viewed as a form of ministry. For example, most social
workers, no matter their religion believe that all people have worth, and see a great importance in
the showing of understanding and kindness towards them. Through my studies in APS 101, at
Redeemer University College, I have learned that social work was brought up by the Church; I
never knew of this relationship. This new knowledge makes me eager to learn more about the field,
and the ways in which I can use it to serve not only my neighbors, but God himself, through its
missionary characteristics. This text has shown me that my beliefs impact the way I see the world,
the people in it, and that my thoughts and actions are inevitably affected by them. As I move deeper
into my studies, I am learning the importance of this, and of bringing my whole self into whatever
situations I face. Societal values are constantly changing, but Christian values remain firm, as they
are planted with biblical roots (Keith–Lucas, 1987, p.3).
Social Work and Christian Beliefs I now understand that the conflicting beliefs, under the blanket of
Christianity can be divided into three categories. The first are the primary beliefs, these are
foundational and include events, such as God creating the world and

Reflection On Social Work
In the beginning of the semester we were given the task to complete 25 or more hours of community
service. This task was given to be completed for my Social Work Ethics class. We were to volunteer
at an organization that was associated with social work and would give us an experience. I was
given the opportunity to work/volunteer along with Trio, a student support service at Fort Valley
State University.
In Trio I helped with multiple workshops/ served as an office assistant. My responsibilities were to

These workshops were hosted by the center for retention services for students. In the workshops, I
helped by assisting with the set–up of equipment for the presenters. I made sign–in sheets and

and make sure that their questions were well answered. I also performed general office duties suck
as taking accurate messages, sort and filing documents and assistance students with application

Social Work As A Social Worker
There are many helping professions. Society has doctors, therapist, teachers, nurses, etc. To help
means to assist, which means to serve. Every business has the infrastructure to serve a need
presented for whatever motives lay behind the person's reasoning. What makes social work
idiosyncratic unlike the rest is the willingness and passion to promote human well–being. I yearn
and hunger to see growth of what is already innate. That is the reason psychology became my
undeclared major.
My ignorance of the social work role did create misconceptions and fears. I knew I had to be in
some helping profession. I was not sure if I would do so through occupational therapy, psychology,
teaching, or social work. I wanted to be a social worker, but I was afraid of the danger associated
with it by giving way to stereotypes. No one wants to be shot or harassed due to taking someone's
child from a terrible environment. This is what I defined social work as. I was a psychology major
with a niche for social and child developmental psychology. I as three years into the Bachelor of
Science Psychology program and I began to develop a distaste for psychology methodology. The
field appeared to be competitive and only research or clinical driven, which I believed confine the
goals I set for myself. I was tired of rehearing the same old man psychological theories that had a
narrow scope. The competition was not intimidating, but it was unnecessary and defeating to turn

WHAT IS SOCIAL WORK?
As a little kid when people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I honestly didn't
know but somehow the words "doctor" or "lawyer" would come out of my mouth. I knew early on
that I wanted to help people and when we would have the career fair at school, the doctors or the
lawyers were the ones who said they helped other individuals. In those early years of life I wasn't
exposed to many things but I was always eager to learn. As time passed and people asked me what I
wanted to be when I got older, I simply said that I wanted to help people.
The term "social work" was nothing more to me than the lady who came to the house to investigate
when the child had a bruise on their body. I knew that I really like to connect people with resources
that will help them grow in life. I explained to an upperclassmen at the University of Illinois a few
days before classes started that I would love to have a business where people can come to me for
anything, rather it's help with planning a wedding or just someone to talk to because they had a
stressful day. She stopped, thought about what I said for a quick second, and then replied, "It sounds
like what you want to do is in the field of social work". After our conversation I added Social Work
200 to my class list.
Social Work, to me, is a field that is designed to help every person in any matter that approaches
them. The role of a social worker is to abide in different environments and provide resources that

I met Christine over a year ago in dingy old Olive Garden where we both worked at the time.
Christine was among the many servers at Olive Garden that were working their way through school,
but that wasn't all she was doing, she was also raising 4 children on her own. Due to our vastly
different ages and places in life, Christine and I's relationship never surpassed work place
acquaintances, but I always had a lot of respect for what she was doing. This last spring Christine
finally graduated with her BSW and left Olive Garden for social work and hasn't looked back. To
start off Christine answered some questions about her education and experience. Christine is fairly
new to the field of social work, considering she graduated less than a year ago. She graduated last
spring with her Bachelor's of Social Work from our own Utah Valley University social work
program. Before she could receive her license Christine did her internship at the Division of Child
and Family Services, which is where she is currently employed. The next thing we discussed was
her current employment and feelings toward her job. Christine talked about people telling her that
child welfare is "the trenches of social work" and she admited it does feel that way some days. But
on the other hand, Christine talked very highly of her internship at DCFS and that she loved the
challenge DCFS posed for her. But in all honesty, she spilled that the main reason she picked DCFS,
was that they offered her a job the week

Beginning my undergraduate studies Bennett College for women, I was a Biology Major. On the
first day of classes, I was up early and full of energy, I walked into my biology classes excited to do
crazy labs and cut stuff open. By midterms, I knew biology was not for me. I no longer felt excited
about my courses and I didn't have the passion for biology like my classmates did. While in
freshwomen orientation I met two social work majors and we talked about our classes and what we
wanted to do in our different fields. I became incredibly interested in the social work field. I learned
that I could be a medical social worker, school counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical
social worker and so much more. In the second semester of my freshwoman year, I made the official
decision to change my major to social work. I was happy that I was going to work with other
students who were just as motivated as I was to bring social change, especially in discrimination.
There are many individuals who experience discrimination in sexism, racism, gender identification,
sexual orientation, religion, age, class and unfair treatment because they were of human trafficking.
My social work courses exposed me to the different levels of social work practice and career options
in the field.
My sophomore year, I participated in Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Human Trafficking
programs on campus. My junior year is when I began my student/teacher research on Human

Social Work Practice with Individuals and Groups 2
Assignment 3

Group is an integral part of life and people join a group because of their own lives circumstances.
Individuals would gain a significant benefit from the group such as the development of several skills
and knowledge in team working and communication. Some people with similar experiences might
join self–help and mutual aid group because group offers individuals a helping system/relationship
throughout the group process. Group consists of people of various age, sex, and cultural
backgrounds. Therefore, it is essential for social workers to be aware of the difference and response
appropriately to any oppressive practice and policies with respect to the culturally diverse people in
group work (AASW, 2010; AASW, 2013).
Group work is a crucial component of social work practice because it provides the practitioner with
a useful tool to develop a collaborative work skill, problem–solving skills and to empower
individuals through the help of others (Rasool & Ross, 2017). Social group work aims to help
individuals and groups to meet their needs through the group experiences in order to influence and
advocate changes to some issues (Lindsay & Orton, 2014). Developing skills and knowledge in
group work is important for social work students. Because group work aims to support the
vulnerable population on a bigger scale in comparison to the traditional social work practice.
I had been a member of several groups, either a formal group at work, school and university; family
or an informal group such as research and activities. I had run and facilitated many groups during
that time; however, these groups were not well organised due to my insufficient knowledge of group
work. Through this semester, I have gained a lot of knowledge of group work including the
principles of group work, leadership style, group stages and the relevance to social work practice.
LaRocque (2017) stated that there is a knowledge gap in the use of group work theories, research,
and skills to guide practice which places an impact on the ability of students to perform group work.

Social Issues In Social Work
Many problems remain in the American society such as the increasing number of people living in
poverty, the juvenile crime rate, unaffordable housing for the working middle–class and poor
people, backlash against illegal immigration, and the shortfall in social welfare programs (black).
Social workers try to combat these problems, which are a result of society, economics, and
development problems. Social work in the United States is a profession about promoting and
offering social services through practicing with people, communities, and organizations; advocating
with and for clients; and creating social work knowledge (Writing in social work). Social work in
the United States utilized the direct practice with individuals, families, and communities. Social
workers need to continue to advocate for social problems (Writing in social work).
During poor law times, society aimed to exclude and discriminate against those who don't belong
(red). This trend has continued through today, as the exclusion of people still exists. The legacy of
workhouses and of the Poor Law remains today in the ideology that the family should be the main
provider of care for those in need, poor people should be deterred from seeking help, and public
assistance should be below the minimum wage (red).
In the 19th century, Rescue organizations emerged to prevent child cruelty (red). These
organizations were a voluntary effort with the task of investigating and bringing justice to child
cruelty. Today, we

I think that some of the classes that I have taken have prepared me to enter into the Social Work
field. When I first came to Chadron State College I was undeclared and had no idea what I really
wanted to get a degree in. I ended up taking a few general classes that I am now thankful I took
because it had prepared me for Social Work.
I took two world history classes that covered pretty much covered the general history of the world
since we have developed societies; World History to 1500 and World History since 1500. I think that
this class helped because it helps me understand a little history from all over the world. This way it
gave me a little background on different cultures and how they might have started. I also took the

classes prepared me for handling each situation differently.
Family Law, Services to Child and Families, and Social Welfare History and Service Delivery
classes have all helped me understand policies and different implementations. They have also
prepared me for finding resources, policies, and programs to help a person. They all have given me
the information that each person, family, and group have different needs and have unique situations
that need to be handled with certain care.
Ever since I was young I wanted to do something that helped people. I believe that people can
change if they truly want to. At first I wanted to do something like being a doctor, pharmacist, or a
police officer. I realized that math really was not for me and I wasn't much of an authority kind of
person. I never really knew what a Social Worker actually did because the media portrayed them as
bad people who took away children. Also growing up I never had to deal with any kind of Social
Worker, which is not a bad thing. I also know what it feels like to be down and alone so I want to

Social Work Intervention
INTRODUCTION
School social work and its purpose is first discussed in Chapter 3. Before 21st century we are not
sure why it did not have formal position. However, in order to demise child labor and include
cultural sensitivity for immigrants; school social work began to take its form (Jarolmen, 2014). The
school social worker has been charged with lifelong learning to increase professional development,
awareness of local, state and federal laws; as well as the position to link services to students,
families and co–educators. This practice behavior will allow the school social worker to ensure that
every child will receive the tools necessary for educational success. School social workers possess

a professional school social worker you must be knowledgeable of strength–based interventions.
The school social worker must also include the support of other stake holders within the educational
process of the student. For instance, principals, administrators, counselors and other support
personnel may be solicited by the school social worker to implement Positive Behavior Support
(PBS) which is an intervention used to deter negative behavior of a student demonstrating signs of
behavior disorder even before it becomes a problem (Merchant, Anderson, Caldarelli, Young, &
Young, 2009 as cited in Jarolmen, 2014).In addition, NC Standard 4 (a) elaborates that school social
workers must exercise assessments to correctly establish the need of the student as well as identify
service gaps within the school setting. Authors Scott, Nelson, & Zabala, (2003), explains the process
of using assessments such as the "Functional Behavior Assessment". The Functional Behavior
Assessment is used to develop a "behavioral intervention plan" for the student as needed. This
assessment is just one of many assessments utilized within the school setting (Scott,

Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare provided me with opportunities to learn by using a
varities of learning syles. This course offered many readings, groupwork, discussions and
presentations to learn the content needed to be successful in this class. Through this course I learned
about the history of social work profession, the code of ethics and how a social worker needs to
follow the core values and ethical standards and the roles of a social worker. I also learned about the
the theories of social work practice that allowed me to become more aware of the needs of social
work profession in diverse areas. Overall, this class has helped me understand the responsibilities a
social worker has to the profession and their clients. At the beginning of the semester we discussed
the history of social work and had a required reading "Huff". This article discussed progress and
reform to the social work profession. Through this reading I learned why the social work profession
began. Social work bagan as a way to help the poor and maintain social order. I never realized how
far back missionaries went in history to help the poor. They offered direct relief and prayer services
for the people in need. As far back as to the Civil War, volunteers worked with the Sanitation
Commision that developed into what we know as the Red Cross and Public Health today. As a

A Degree For Social Work
A degree for social work?
Why is it that some citizens think that people who work in the field of social work does not need an
education or a degree for it? Also, they think is all about having a good heart and a great deal of
common sense. I believe that having these traits for this job is part of it since you do need some
common sense and a good heart. There are many other requirements that are needed in this career
for example psychological and sociology training among others, to be able to understand the
differences of human cultures and their races.
As a matter of fact according with experts, social work education was a phenomenon of the 20th
century that requires trained staff to administer a multi–billion dollar human service ... Show more

So how could a social worker that is an Anglo–Saxon is able to understand someone who learned
English but is Hispanic not born in the US. Not to mention that all Hispanics are not the same since
there are so many mixes of nationality and so forth. If you cannot understand their background, then
how would you be able to help if you do not know their culture, custom, and race?
Having an education where you take classes like sociology and psychology could help in this task of
social work. Having classes like this are very helpful since with these tools we are more likely to
know why some people think and act the way they do. Hispanic culture could be very different, even
if people happen to be from the same country. Also, there could be people that could have very
similar culture and way of thinking even if they are not from the same country. Another thing you
have to take in consideration is their values and ethics since social work education programs include
in their curriculum to help us to be aware of their personal values, and the respect for the other
people from different backgrounds (Boyle, Farley, & Smith, 2011).
For instance there are other programs that have been implemented to be able to deliver good
services to people and their communities. Some of these areas in social work are social welfare,
research, social work practice, among others. These programs teach about policy and services that

Reflection On Social Work
One important thing that I learned about this competency is the importance of knowing the history
of social work; in addition, the impact that social work has had in enacting social welfare policies.
For example, we learned about Mary Richmond and Jane Addams and the great influence they have
in social work practice. Mary Richmond helped coined case work in social work, and Jane Addams
is the "mother" of social work because she was one of the earliest people to influence social work
practice. We also learned about how the Civil Rights Movement helped with the advancement of not
only people of color, but it also helped women and other oppressed groups of people in our society.
It is important to understand the history of social work because history has helped create many laws
and policies to help people that are oppressed in our society. In addition, I learned the importance of
advocating for policies that advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice. I
can use this knowledge in my practice by working for an agency that advocates for the social,
economic, and environmental justices.
My strength in this competency is that I have a great understanding on how the history of social
work has contributed to the current laws and policies that are in place to advance human rights.
Knowing the current laws and policies will help me be able to help my clients; however, I clearly do
not know all policies. Because I do not know all the policies and laws, I will

Social work is a profession that promotes social change, assisting individuals to reach their full
potential by connecting them to resources to meet their basic needs and advocating for the

helping our clients to reach their full potential and empower themselves to overcome their struggles.

In life individual experiences help create a particular perception of reality. In much the same way
that one's sensory perception describes the natural world. Individual attempts to make sense of one's
"reality" without experience is merely an assumption. Confirmation regarding individual
proficiencies and character often requires experience. Without experience one is left to interpret the
world through the experience of others. Therefore, it is necessary to experience something directly

Thus, many of child predators are never brought to justice. The wounds of trauma are deep, and
leave a lasting impression on the child. As a social worker, I believe that I could provide comfort to
victims of childhood sexual assault. Stress and trauma continue long into adulthood, the traumatic
event does not truly disappear, instead victims of childhood sexual assault are left to cope on their
own. My experience with victims of violent rape, and early childhood incest (by a family member)

successful in assisting individuals (children and adults), is mindfulness–based cognitive therapy.
Mindfulness is something that can be implemented by individuals of every age. Cognitive

well with children who are reluctant to disclose information, I recognize the need for report

Integration Paper: Developing My Structural Social Work Framework for Practice
Erin James
Carleton University
As an aspiring social worker, it is important to think about what theories to apply whilst working in
the field. Through a structural approach, I will use multiple theories in my practice, such as
intersectionality in regards to feminist social work and resilience and empowerment. This is because
one theory may not consider the limitations of the model in working to analyze, assess, and provide
intervention for clients (Lundy, 2011).
Intersectionality in terms of feminist social work understands the diversity amongst the experiences
of women based on multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This includes class, sexuality, and other structural barriers in which women are oppressed because of
their social location. To be specific, this theory emphasizes how someone's race and culture, for
example, may be factors in their oppression in addition to their gender, not only focusing on how
they are being oppressed based on their gender. I believe this will be important in my practice as a
social worker because I may be working with diverse clients that will have certain needs based on
the structural barriers they are facing in their daily lives. I am interested in working with women and
may work with women who are survivors of violence. Working with this population would mean
that I would have to recognize every aspect of their identity in order to able to fully help them and
advocate for them. For example, if I am working with an Aboriginal women who is a survivor of
violence, it would be effective in using Aboriginal ways of healing to aid in the process of the
client's journey to recovery. This could also mean using different approaches

Social Work Reflection
Post–Reflection on Social Justice and Transformation
Introduction
Before beginning the Master of Social Work program at Laurier I figured I had a strong
understanding of what social work was. However, I quickly learned that I had only scratched the
surface. I knew oppression existed, but I never understood the depth of it. I now know that I was
afraid of it. It was easy for me to stay silent, because it was such a comfortable position to be in.
Doing nothing meant I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. This was influenced by the
privilege I had. We talk a lot about our social location, or identifying who we are. Before I get
further into this paper I wish to identify myself. I am a white male born to two white, heterosexual
Anglican parents. I grew up having mostly white friends, until graduating high school. I also have
been diagnosed with clinical depression, which is a significant attribute of my identity. As a result of
these intersectional attributes they create an identity that is both privileged and oppressed and these
elements change depending on the situation (Curry–Steven, 2007, p.37). It is important to
understand who you are, as it will shape who I am in the work I do as a social worker.
As the term comes to an end I realize that my understand of social work has changed and that I have
a lot more learning to do, learning which will span the rest of my life. Social work is more than
helping, to me it is about making sacrifices to better the lives of

The Importance Of Social Work
A movie that one would watch and not immediately think "social work," would be X–Men: First
Class. At first glance, it is a simple action movie about mutants with inhuman powers, but upon
further inspection, social work concepts are bound to shine through. One concept in particular that
becomes a crucial plot point in the movie is ethics. Such a concept leads to a connection between the
movie and the ethical principles in social work that can be seen in the characters' interactions with
the main character throughout the film. The main character in the film, Charles Xavier, or Professor
X, becomes a type of spiritual teacher for the group of mutants in the film. Xavier acts as somewhat
of a social worker through his efforts to get the group of mutants to learn to control their powers
(Donner, Goodman, Kinberg, Singer & Vaughn, 2011). The first social work term demonstrated
would be acceptance. Acceptance is to treat clients in a humane and considerate manner (DuBois &
Miley, 2014, p. 120). Xavier first displays his acceptance of the mutants by complementing their
inhuman skills. Whilst working with a mutant named Banshee, Xavier reacts to Banshee's ability to
scream at a frequency high enough to break any glass by exclaiming, "What you're doing is
incredible!" (Donner et al., 2011). Words like these portray an accepting attitude that is a vital part
of ethical social work practice. Xavier also utilizes the principle of individualization.
Individualization is the

The Components Of Social Work
The main element that drew me to the profession of social work was the diverse opportunities
available. Social work is a very flexible field that consists of many different components such as
family and child welfare, poverty and inequality, and substance abuse/ addiction. The main
component of social work that interests me is working with people who have disabilities, mental
and/or physical. According to our textbook about 11.3% of social workers with bachelor's work in
this field (Cox, Tice, & Long, 2016, pg. 17). I discovered that I was interested in this component of
social work after a traumatic experience that left me with a disability.
Component of Social Work A disability is usually defined as a decline in function that can either be
temporary or permanent. There are two main groupings of disabilities; categorial and functional.
Categorial disabilities include mental illnesses and sensory damage which often leads to
developmental delays. In comparison, functional disabilities cause limitations during physical
activity. Individuals can also suffer from more than one disability which is known as a co–occurring
disability (Cox et al., 2016, pg. 159). Social workers often view disabilities in three types;
developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and mental disabilities. A developmental disability
is a long–term disability that is typically diagnosed before age 22. These disabilities include Autism,
Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome (Cox et al., 2016, pg.

Mezzo Social Work

  • 1. Mezzo Social Work In the field of social work there are different types of groups that we will eventually be working with. Because the field of social work is so big, it is broken down into groups. These groups are micro and mezzo. Both of these types of groups are very different from each other yet these types of groups can be beneficial to individuals and families who are in need of some assistance. Micro practice is a level of practice in which social workers work in. In the field of social work, micro is the practice that typically involves the direct contact with the individuals or families. A social worker who is working in the micro level tends to work with low income individuals, individuals who suffer from addictions such as alcohol and other drugs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Socio-Erapo-Social-Work Theory And Social Work Introduction "Throughout the social work profession, there is ongoing interest in building a social science agenda that can address the complex practice–based questions faced by social work professionals today," says Matto and Goltzman (2010). As a social worker it is vital, to use our tools and skills we have learned in order to assist our clients to the best of our ability and knowledge. Social workers can use models and theories such as the bio–psycho–social model, development factors, as well as, theoretical perspectives in order to gain a firm understanding of the individual's environment and how it effects their development. These theories have helped to attempt us to understand and explain human behavior, relationship, and social issues; however, this theory has taught social workers what we practice on an everyday basis and how we interact and intergrade with society through, evidence based practice helps understand human behavior. Emma is a five– year–old girl who has experienced a significant amount of trauma for her age, in both educational and home environments. As a result, Emma struggles with behavioral issues that have brought forth possible developmental delays. Emma, struggles academically and struggles to communicate effectively with classmates. She has an open child abuse case as well as experiences the effects of parental divorce. • 7. Reflection On Social Work I've now been at my placement for over a month and have experienced many different opportunities. Over the last few weeks I learned about the process of facilitating a care conference with family members and the resident. I learned how to write up notes about the care conference to chart. Another learning experience I discovered was the process of guardians for residents who cannot make their own decisions. My supervisor and I sat down to discuss the process and went through paperwork on how to become a guardian. I learned a lot about Power of Attorney's during this time and the legal work behind guardianship. Later, my supervisor said I'd be able to go to a guardianship court hearing to watch the process unfold. I'm looking forward to that so I can see the whole picture of the guardianship process. I got to experience what is called a "departure" at Bethel Home. A resident had passed and the staff received the family's permission for the departure ceremony. The staff gathered in the hall and said a prayer with the family, and then they sang "Amazing Grace." It was something I had never experienced before and it was very emotional for the staff and the family members. It was a helpful way for the family and staff to receive closure. Over the past month I am beginning to understand the flow of Bethel Home. I am starting to get a feel for what the social worker's responsibilities are and an understanding of other positions. I'm starting to ask more questions and I'm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Levels Of Social Work Micro–level social work involves working with individuals, whereas, macro–level social work involves improving conditions on a larger scale, for groups of people such as a community. The levels of social work practice are not only related, but they influence each other and often display characteristics of a cause and effect relationship. This essay will explain how the levels of social work practice influence each other, followed by examples of this influence, particularly focusing on attachment theory. In conclusion, this essay will demonstrate how the relationship between the social work levels of practice can affect a social worker's ability to stay in compliance with the social work code of ethics. Macro–level social work is comprised of the individuals that are treated on the micro–level. The evidence based practices are the most widely used techniques on the micro– level and they became evidence based because those practices had the highest success rates from the greatest number of people on a macro–level. During the class lecture, Bret argued that governmental and work policies on the macro–level can have an effect on individuals or individual families. Alternatively, micro theories can lead to macro policies. An example mentioned in class lecture was the fact that the United States is largely driven by attachment theory. This was a Freudian based theory developed to help understand orphans post World War II. This micro–level theory ignored all other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Implications For Social Work This piece of writing is going to demonstrate an understanding of diversity, difference and also discuss the implications for social work practice. It will include an understanding of theories and concepts in relation to diversity where it will address the needs of diverse communities, individuals and groups, exploring differences in relation to culture, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, social class and economic wellbeing. It will also demonstrate an understanding of principle of working in an anti–oppressive and anti–discriminatory way. In relation to social work diversity does not simply mean difference in race and gender but also the unnoticeable differences such as values, religion, social background, economic wellbeing and political beliefs. It is important to acknowledge and understand diversity in social work as there have been matters of holding assumptions and prejudices about an individual or group in the manner they are treated and the services they receive. The issue with making assumptions and prejudices is acknowledged in the Social Work Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) as domain 3 explains that diversity is multi–dimensional, diversity can effect an individual's life experience in a positive or negative way. This is due to the issues that occur with differences such as oppression, marginalisation and alienation as well as the positive side which includes privilege, power and acclaim (Capabilities within the PCF, 2014). Every one of these books are unique, no two share the same story. My book may be torn, damaged by time and pain, but mended by passion. My motivation to become a social worker has been that tape and glue. It sealed every tear, and it gave every hardship a purpose. I faced these misfortunes to learn what darkness is, to be shown my capacity to be the light in other people's lives. My life has led me to social work, it has become my purpose. Throughout the last few years, there have been several individuals who have guided me, supporting me through hardships. These people are the only reason I have prospered to where I am today, ... Through a series of both open–ended and Likert scale questions, the semi–structured interviews focused on the participants' chosen intentional learning activity. The interview included 19 statements that asked the participants to respond with a number valued 0 to 10; 0 meaning total disagreement and 10 was total agreement. The interviews were audio recorded on my laptop computer and I obtained consent from the participants. Findings Theme Among adult learners engaged in purposeful learning activities, prior successful experiences led to a strong sense of self–efficacy in their learning that enabled them to overcome situational barriers to learning that arose. Supporting Data Alyse shared what prompted her to become involved in the MSW program: "I really wanted to do something with kids, so probably in a school. I didn't necessarily know I wanted to be a school social worker until I was in the program, but pretty much any job like that you need to get a master's." Alyse previously worked with children in a school setting as an ABA Therapist. When asked to rate her previous experience related to the learning, Alyse gave herself a 3 on the scale. Alyse commented, "I wouldn't say I had a lot of experience in social work specifically, but I did work in a school for a long time where I worked with kids...I feel like I had more experience than other people." ... • 19. The Social Work Profession In the social work profession, the primary goal is to aid and empower individuals or families who are faced with oppression, vulnerable in society, and living in poverty (Code of Ethics, 2008). Social workers strive to improve the welfare of those who need assistance meeting their daily basic essentials for survival. According to Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Basic needs, a person requires five clusters to make them an integrated and self–motivated whole in society. The five clusters include: physiological needs; security needs; social needs; self–esteem needs; and self–actualizing needs (Aanstoos, 2014). The Code of Ethics is an important component that ensures that the profession is held to its highest standard and to protect the community. In this paper, the intern was placed at the Mobile County Department of Human Resources in the Adult Protective Services department and will be disclosing information about a particular case during their internship. To protect the clients and all parties associated confidentially within this case, material that could reveal their identity will not be discussed and only relevant information about the case will be addressed. The clients in this case have been both diagnosed with agoraphobia with panic disorder. First, I learned about the importance of distinguishing the role between facilitator and participant, which parallels to the necessity to set professional boundaries with clients. This exercise allowed me to experience the need for such a balance firsthand, and I am grateful for that. Secondly, I think that I need to challenge my lack of self–confidence. This will be necessary, not only for my own wellbeing and peace of mind, but also to adequately do my job as a social worker. If I am nervous to participate during topics that I am unfamiliar or uncomfortable with, I will never grow as a person or as a worker. Instead of waiting for the conversation to die down enough for me to summarize and bring us back on topic, in the future I will cut off the side conversations and ask that we give our respect to the person who was speaking previously and was interrupted. Additionally, it was recommended to me by a fellow classmate that facilitating the group so that speakers take turns sharing by going around the circle might help to prevent this situation from happening again. As previously discussed, this method has both benefits and drawbacks, however I witnessed how well the 'going around the circle' method worked for eliminating interruptions and side conversations. I was hesitant about using this style of group due to my own anxieties regarding knowing when my turn to speak was coming up, and so I made the conscious decision to use a different style. However, after seeing how well this method worked to prevent multiple conversations, I would be more open to using it in the future. Moreover, there was an additional ethical concern that arose during the planning of our group. My partners and I agreed that we wanted to be as prepared as possible, not only for the sake of our grade, but also for the wellbeing of our participants. • 23. Lgb Social Work From above paragraphs we have learnt that lesbian, gay, bisexual youth face discrimination and marginalization fostered by the social systems that serve them. As a result a social worker should analyze prudently the use and misuse of power in the client's life (critical consciousness) and promote engagement to foster social justice (Wagaman, 2016). As stated by Wagaman (2016), the positive wellbeing of LGB youth can be ensured through such services in accordance with their empowerment. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is understood from the above understandings, that due to violence, stigma and discrimination that LGB youth face daily, the majority among them face adverse mental health such as depression, suicide and anxiety. As an ally of LGB youth, I should foster awareness and dialogues by participating in social activism in order to create safer space for LGB youth to break the social isolation and provide a safe place to explore their self–identity (Vaccaro, August & Kennedy, 2012). Meanwhile, I should consider the social stigma associated with LGB youth and be prepared to counter the backlash from family members of youth, the heterosexual community and even the supervisors (Lee & Brotman, 2015). Besides, this provided the awareness of human rights of LGB youth in a larger community is more likely an initiative of individual worker (Lee & Brotman, 2015) which requires proper wide angle knowledge on the issue and the above reflection equipped me well. • 27. Social Work Reflection As a social worker, I am aware that though I may choose a particular field to work within, there are few instances when I may pick and choose the specific client population I work with. Since my social work journey began in 2008, a population that has been most difficult to serve objectively and without bias has been the subset of clients that purposefully vote in elections against their own self– interests, in particular, those that vote with the Republican Party. Raised in the evangelical South, the ideology of the Republican Party is not foreign to those of us that live here as, "The South has served as the ideological vanguard of Republicanism for decades" (Hood, 2015). A self–proclaimed Democrat, I struggle with the paradox that a client utilizing governmental services to survive, would vote against his/her own self–interests. I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and as is the case in most African–American families, those closest to me voted overwhelmingly Democratic and taught me at an early age that it was in the best interest of myself, family, and community to do so. I remember at ten years old in the year 2000, attending an Al Gore rally and subsequently visiting our assigned polling place to watch my mother cast her vote for the Democratic candidate. That introduction to politics and similar experiences have shaped my perceptions and viewpoints of various social issues and solidified my political beliefs as I transitioned into adulthood (Hood, 2015). • 29. Social Work Essay This essay will discuss social divisions; social exclusion and social inclusion, of which there are many definitions and interpretations. Social divisions and Social exclusion has been around for many years. Social exclusion was first noticed in France in 1970s in relation to people who fell outside the range of the social insurance system, such as disabled people, lone parents and the young unemployed (Townsend and Kennedy, 2004). Before 1997 Social exclusion was referred to as 'poverty', which means where people lack many of the opportunities that are available to the average person (Palmer; 2010). One interpretation of social exclusion comes from the European Commission's recent Joint Report ,which states 'social exclusion is a process where individuals are made to feel pushed out and prevented from participating in society, due to poverty or lack of education. This may result in discrimination, resulting in exclusion from jobs, an income, limited education, lack of social and community opportunities and possibly feeling powerless' (Europa, 2003). A structural view from Field (1989) and Dahrendorf (1987) who believe it is the structures in society that exclude people. Another, interpretation from the Social Exclusion Unit London (SEU) states social exclusion is 'a shorthand label for what can happen when individuals or areas suffer from a combination of linked problems such as unemployment, poor skills, low incomes, poor housing, high crime environments, bad health and family breakdown' (SEU 1997). Pierson (2010) suggests that poverty, low income, lack of access to the job market, low or non existent social support, the effect of the area and the exclusion from services are all ways to socially exclude people from society. Thompson (2010) believes that social location affects people's life chances, due to where people are born and where they live, arguing that people have no choice/control over what position they are within society and depending on their location within the structure ... • 31. Social Work As A Profession Social work as a profession is a universal and opportunistic field. The field itself ranges from placements in mental health to even education. One of the most prominent and growing areas in the field is medical social work. • 33. Intervention In Social Work As social workers, it is important to study the entire aspect of the individual. We must examine the individual past and see if their condition is trauma–related. It is the job of the social worker to identify the issue, in this case it would be a person who suffers from a mental illness and is placed in isolation when in jail or person and find the best solution for that issue. The solution to the issue may not be what's written in a handbook or what we were thought, but sometimes we must find alternate resolutions. While we may not have the answers to combat the issue; if as social workers we could find the root cause of the issue that may help in the intervention process. • 37. Social Work Values Social work is a vast field with complex and numerous factors that can create confusion on what exactly the social work profession is. Many theories and values have been assigned to social work based scientific development and studies, assumptions and inherent beliefs, which can only add to the chaotic understanding of the profession. Although the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) was only founded in 1955, (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 113) social work has been utilized for centuries, including Henry VIII of England who passed an act mandating, "local parishes to take care of their destitute and create a procedure for the collection and administration of donations to the poor." (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 92). Discussed in the following is a more concrete definition of social work along with core values needed to be acquired to support the practice of social work effectively. Social work can be defined as, "promoting social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients." (NASW, 2008, Preamble) Simply put, social workers are there to advocate and promote a more tolerable world in which everyone in society is treated equally, with fairness and are provided the same opportunities. In addition to this definition, some value assumptions have to be clearly made in order to support the profession of social work. The values that best compliment the above definition are most suitably described in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) code of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Social Work And Social Work The Common and Separate Ground On the first page of Keith–Lucas's, So You Want to be a Social Worker he makes note of how Christianity and social work share a lot of the same values, because of this the practice of social work can be viewed as a form of ministry. For example, most social workers, no matter their religion believe that all people have worth, and see a great importance in the showing of understanding and kindness towards them. Through my studies in APS 101, at Redeemer University College, I have learned that social work was brought up by the Church; I never knew of this relationship. This new knowledge makes me eager to learn more about the field, and the ways in which I can use it to serve not only my neighbors, but God himself, through its missionary characteristics. This text has shown me that my beliefs impact the way I see the world, the people in it, and that my thoughts and actions are inevitably affected by them. As I move deeper into my studies, I am learning the importance of this, and of bringing my whole self into whatever situations I face. Societal values are constantly changing, but Christian values remain firm, as they are planted with biblical roots (Keith–Lucas, 1987, p.3). Social Work and Christian Beliefs I now understand that the conflicting beliefs, under the blanket of Christianity can be divided into three categories. The first are the primary beliefs, these are foundational and include events, such as God creating the world and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This task was given to be completed for my Social Work Ethics class. We were to volunteer at an organization that was associated with social work and would give us an experience. I was given the opportunity to work/volunteer along with Trio, a student support service at Fort Valley State University. In Trio I helped with multiple workshops/ served as an office assistant. My responsibilities were to provide customer service via telephone, email and greeting visitors and responding to inquiries. These workshops were hosted by the center for retention services for students. In the workshops, I helped by assisting with the set–up of equipment for the presenters. I made sign–in sheets and monitors the table to make sure all students did in fact sign in. I also help by disputing out brochures and make sure that their questions were well answered. I also performed general office duties suck as taking accurate messages, sort and filing documents and assistance students with application process for Trio admission. Being an assistant enhance my ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner. • 43. Social Work As A Social Worker There are many helping professions. Society has doctors, therapist, teachers, nurses, etc. To help means to assist, which means to serve. Every business has the infrastructure to serve a need presented for whatever motives lay behind the person's reasoning. What makes social work idiosyncratic unlike the rest is the willingness and passion to promote human well–being. I yearn and hunger to see growth of what is already innate. That is the reason psychology became my undeclared major. My ignorance of the social work role did create misconceptions and fears. I knew I had to be in some helping profession. I was not sure if I would do so through occupational therapy, psychology, teaching, or social work. I wanted to be a social worker, but I was afraid of the danger associated with it by giving way to stereotypes. No one wants to be shot or harassed due to taking someone's child from a terrible environment. This is what I defined social work as. I was a psychology major with a niche for social and child developmental psychology. I as three years into the Bachelor of Science Psychology program and I began to develop a distaste for psychology methodology. The field appeared to be competitive and only research or clinical driven, which I believed confine the goals I set for myself. I was tired of rehearing the same old man psychological theories that had a narrow scope. The competition was not intimidating, but it was unnecessary and defeating to turn out rates of ... • 45. What Is Social Work? WHAT IS SOCIAL WORK? As a little kid when people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I honestly didn't know but somehow the words "doctor" or "lawyer" would come out of my mouth. I knew early on that I wanted to help people and when we would have the career fair at school, the doctors or the lawyers were the ones who said they helped other individuals. In those early years of life I wasn't exposed to many things but I was always eager to learn. As time passed and people asked me what I wanted to be when I got older, I simply said that I wanted to help people. The term "social work" was nothing more to me than the lady who came to the house to investigate when the child had a bruise on their body. I knew that I really like to connect people with resources that will help them grow in life. I explained to an upperclassmen at the University of Illinois a few days before classes started that I would love to have a business where people can come to me for anything, rather it's help with planning a wedding or just someone to talk to because they had a stressful day. She stopped, thought about what I said for a quick second, and then replied, "It sounds like what you want to do is in the field of social work". After our conversation I added Social Work 200 to my class list. Social Work, to me, is a field that is designed to help every person in any matter that approaches them. Christine was among the many servers at Olive Garden that were working their way through school, but that wasn't all she was doing, she was also raising 4 children on her own. Due to our vastly different ages and places in life, Christine and I's relationship never surpassed work place acquaintances, but I always had a lot of respect for what she was doing. This last spring Christine finally graduated with her BSW and left Olive Garden for social work and hasn't looked back. To start off Christine answered some questions about her education and experience. Christine is fairly new to the field of social work, considering she graduated less than a year ago. She graduated last spring with her Bachelor's of Social Work from our own Utah Valley University social work program. Before she could receive her license Christine did her internship at the Division of Child and Family Services, which is where she is currently employed. The next thing we discussed was her current employment and feelings toward her job. Christine talked about people telling her that child welfare is "the trenches of social work" and she admited it does feel that way some days. But on the other hand, Christine talked very highly of her internship at DCFS and that she loved the challenge DCFS posed for her. But in all honesty, she spilled that the main reason she picked DCFS, was that they offered her a job the week ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the first day of classes, I was up early and full of energy, I walked into my biology classes excited to do crazy labs and cut stuff open. By midterms, I knew biology was not for me. I no longer felt excited about my courses and I didn't have the passion for biology like my classmates did. While in freshwomen orientation I met two social work majors and we talked about our classes and what we wanted to do in our different fields. I became incredibly interested in the social work field. I learned that I could be a medical social worker, school counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical social worker and so much more. In the second semester of my freshwoman year, I made the official decision to change my major to social work. I was happy that I was going to work with other students who were just as motivated as I was to bring social change, especially in discrimination. There are many individuals who experience discrimination in sexism, racism, gender identification, sexual orientation, religion, age, class and unfair treatment because they were of human trafficking. • 51. Reflection On Social Work SWTP 411 Social Work Practice with Individuals and Groups 2 Assignment 3 Reflective Journal Duc Anh (Tony) Tran S00172577 Word Count: 987 Group is an integral part of life and people join a group because of their own lives circumstances. Individuals would gain a significant benefit from the group such as the development of several skills and knowledge in team working and communication. Some people with similar experiences might join self–help and mutual aid group because group offers individuals a helping system/relationship throughout the group process. Group consists of people of various age, sex, and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is essential for social workers to be aware of the difference and response appropriately to any oppressive practice and policies with respect to the culturally diverse people in group work (AASW, 2010; AASW, 2013). Group work is a crucial component of social work practice because it provides the practitioner with a useful tool to develop a collaborative work skill, problem–solving skills and to empower individuals through the help of others (Rasool & Ross, 2017). Social group work aims to help individuals and groups to meet their needs through the group experiences in order to influence and advocate changes to some issues (Lindsay & Orton, 2014). Developing skills and knowledge in group work is important for social work students. Because group work aims to support the vulnerable population on a bigger scale in comparison to the traditional social work practice. I had been a member of several groups, either a formal group at work, school and university; family or an informal group such as research and activities. I had run and facilitated many groups during that time; however, these groups were not well organised due to my insufficient knowledge of group work. Through this semester, I have gained a lot of knowledge of group work including the principles of group work, leadership style, group stages and the relevance to social work practice. LaRocque (2017) stated that there is a knowledge gap in the use of group work theories, research, and skills to guide practice which places an impact on the ability of students to perform group work. • 53. Social Issues In Social Work Many problems remain in the American society such as the increasing number of people living in poverty, the juvenile crime rate, unaffordable housing for the working middle–class and poor people, backlash against illegal immigration, and the shortfall in social welfare programs (black). Social workers try to combat these problems, which are a result of society, economics, and development problems. Social work in the United States is a profession about promoting and offering social services through practicing with people, communities, and organizations; advocating with and for clients; and creating social work knowledge (Writing in social work). Social work in the United States utilized the direct practice with individuals, families, and communities. Social workers need to continue to advocate for social problems (Writing in social work). During poor law times, society aimed to exclude and discriminate against those who don't belong (red). This trend has continued through today, as the exclusion of people still exists. The legacy of workhouses and of the Poor Law remains today in the ideology that the family should be the main provider of care for those in need, poor people should be deterred from seeking help, and public assistance should be below the minimum wage (red). In the 19th century, Rescue organizations emerged to prevent child cruelty (red). These organizations were a voluntary effort with the task of investigating and bringing justice to child cruelty. • 63. Reflection On Social Work One important thing that I learned about this competency is the importance of knowing the history of social work; in addition, the impact that social work has had in enacting social welfare policies. For example, we learned about Mary Richmond and Jane Addams and the great influence they have in social work practice. Mary Richmond helped coined case work in social work, and Jane Addams is the "mother" of social work because she was one of the earliest people to influence social work practice. We also learned about how the Civil Rights Movement helped with the advancement of not only people of color, but it also helped women and other oppressed groups of people in our society. It is important to understand the history of social work because history has helped create many laws and policies to help people that are oppressed in our society. In addition, I learned the importance of advocating for policies that advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice. I can use this knowledge in my practice by working for an agency that advocates for the social, economic, and environmental justices. My strength in this competency is that I have a great understanding on how the history of social work has contributed to the current laws and policies that are in place to advance human rights. Through a structural approach, I will use multiple theories in my practice, such as intersectionality in regards to feminist social work and resilience and empowerment. I am interested in working with women and may work with women who are survivors of violence. • 71. Social Work Reflection Post–Reflection on Social Justice and Transformation Introduction Before beginning the Master of Social Work program at Laurier I figured I had a strong understanding of what social work was. However, I quickly learned that I had only scratched the surface. I knew oppression existed, but I never understood the depth of it. I now know that I was afraid of it. It was easy for me to stay silent, because it was such a comfortable position to be in. Doing nothing meant I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. This was influenced by the privilege I had. We talk a lot about our social location, or identifying who we are. Before I get further into this paper I wish to identify myself. I am a white male born to two white, heterosexual Anglican parents. I grew up having mostly white friends, until graduating high school. I also have been diagnosed with clinical depression, which is a significant attribute of my identity. As a result of these intersectional attributes they create an identity that is both privileged and oppressed and these elements change depending on the situation (Curry–Steven, 2007, p.37). It is important to understand who you are, as it will shape who I am in the work I do as a social worker. As the term comes to an end I realize that my understand of social work has changed and that I have a lot more learning to do, learning which will span the rest of my life. • 73. The Importance Of Social Work A movie that one would watch and not immediately think "social work," would be X–Men: First Class. At first glance, it is a simple action movie about mutants with inhuman powers, but upon further inspection, social work concepts are bound to shine through. One concept in particular that becomes a crucial plot point in the movie is ethics. Such a concept leads to a connection between the movie and the ethical principles in social work that can be seen in the characters' interactions with the main character throughout the film. The main character in the film, Charles Xavier, or Professor X, becomes a type of spiritual teacher for the group of mutants in the film. Xavier acts as somewhat of a social worker through his efforts to get the group of mutants to learn to control their powers (Donner, Goodman, Kinberg, Singer & Vaughn, 2011). The first social work term demonstrated would be acceptance. Acceptance is to treat clients in a humane and considerate manner (DuBois & Miley, 2014, p. 120).
