2. Magazine adverts are eye-catching mini-posters that are supposed to
positively portray the artist. They are predominantly attached to a
product; a new album or tour. The colour schemes and imagery should
be linked to the artist and product, and be representative of the
intended audience as well as the artist.
Magazine adverts are often voyeuristic, and focus on the artist as a
figure than as a musician. In addition these adverts tend to be
simplistic with a bombastic focal point in the centre and information
surrounding the focal point.
4. Mise en Scene:
There is very little mise en scene in the poster as it is predominantly silhouetted. The dark costumes give a
grunge look. There are also two radio towers broadcasting lightning bolts, portraying their music as
“lightning” like and popular.
Voyeurism/Star image:
The advert has the band central. Their facial expressions are serious and masculine, this would be
attractive to grunge and hard rock Audience.
Text:
The band name text is predominant on the advert, taking up a third of the page. The tour dates are also
bold and take up nearly a quarter. There is also a small bit of text marketing their album, with a QR code. It
seems that the advert is trying to attract fans to the band itself but putting its name in bold. The bands
name includes “Graveyard” which would connote grunge or heavy metal
Colour:
The black and white colours are very bold and contrast well. The white is quite eye-catching but the black
represents the dark, grunge nature of the music. The blue acts as a bridge between the black and white
and makes the advert easier to look at. The blue is also a stark contrast to their red album cover, drawing
the viewer towards it
General:
This advert is far more focused on iconography that sex appeal. As the band would have gathered a
fandom through their sound over their aesthetic the advert capitalises on the stylings of the music and
band. The stylings tell us the genre of the band through the style and the minimalism would be good for
our bands advert.
5. Mise en Scene:
In this advert the mise on scene is two people kissing graffitied on a wall.
Voyeurism/Star image:
The band does not feature on the poster, only the band logo. However the two people kissing
could be seen as Voyeuristic as many of the bands fans would be attracted to the glamorousness
of there relationship.
Text:
The text on the poster is in a graffiti style. This is relevant as it reflects the punk nature of the
band, being rebellious and urban. The line “The wait is finally over” shows there is an
anticipation for the new album and focuses on the bands success.
Colour:
The hot colours; red, yellow and orange are exciting and blend together in a dynamic and eye
catching way. It uses the same colour scheme and imagery as the album art. The white words
stand out, highlighting the band name and album release date,
General:
This advert also focuses on iconography, and the punk nature of the band is imagined as a “21st
Century Breakdown” and would appeal to the punk nature of our band. Our band would also
use similar iconography but with bleaker colour scheme and imagery.
