Kaiser chiefs case study
1. HOW DO THE KAISER CHIEFS ENGAGE THEIR
AUDIENCE, WITH THEIR PRINTED TEXTS FOR
‘YOURS TRULY, ANGRY MOB’ ?
2. - Kaiser Chiefs are a band whom identify with the indie rock genre.
- They formed in 2000; originally named ‘Parva’ they released just one studio album before rebranding to ‘Kaiser Chiefs’.
- The current members of the band are: Ricky Wilson, Andrew White, Simon Rix, Nick Baines, and Vijay Mistry.
- The album’s most popular and recognisable song is ‘Ruby’. The single itself reached number one on the ‘Eurochart hot
100’, it also peaked at number one in the charts in Czech Republic.
- 2006 was the band’s most successful year, in terms of winning awards. The band won the awards for the following: ‘Best
British Group’, ‘Best British Rock act’, and ‘Best British live act’. As well as being nominated for the ‘British Breakthrough
Act’.
- Their album ‘Yours Truly Angry Mob’ was released on 26th of February 2006.
3. - The album cover has a clear minimalist-style inspiration. The cover draws attention to the
faces of the band, suggesting that this idea of brand identity is being used as an
attraction for the audience. The use of the band’s faces draws attention to people of
whom are already fans of the band. Those who already recognise the work of the band
won’t/don’t think twice as to whether the album should be bought.
- The blank space in the middle of the album cover creates a connotation to the ideas of
the album that the band have tried to create. The slight yellow tint to the space
replicates this idea of a blank canvas. This could infer to any audience that the album
itself is a compilation of art. Furthermore, the placement of the band member on this
canvas could be seen as a visual representation of how the band members are the artists
of this musical ‘art’.
- Furthermore, the lack of colour could link to the simplicity of the tracks on the album,
promoting this idea to the audience that they should just focus on the music. This is an
idea that has been held by the idea, the band themselves oppose to this idea of making
themselves into a brand, and instead they should be judged solely on their music.
- The black and white effect engages a much older audience, as this idea of a traditional
black and white album connotes to the idea that the music is old fashioned, which is
what separates it from the pop music of the time of release, as well as the pop music of
today. Promoting an idea of independence; this draws the attention of a much younger
audience as well, because this idea of independence is an idea that a more youthful
audience can relate to, as well as strive to feel.
- The font of the text that reads ‘Yours Truly Angry Mob’ draws links to English Royalty. The
formality of the font connotes to this idea that the band and their album are worthy of
connotations to royalty. This idea that their music is prestigious, shows a level of
arrogance, as well as confidence, which a wide audience can appreciate.
4. - The poster for the release of the album really draws attention to three things. These
three things are the most important things about the actual print production. The first is
the name of the album, as well as the band. This is important in terms of developing and
furthering the brand identity which really engages the audience. The second is fact that
the band are actually on the poster; as I said about the album it attracts fans of the band
already, but it also attracts people as it creates a more personal relationship between the
band and the audience. The third point is the draw of attention to the release date. The
only bit of colour on the poster is the release date, imprinting the date in the audience’s
minds.
- A huge factor in terms of engaging the audience to this poster is the direct mode of
address. The band are looking the audience right in the eyes, creating this intimate
connotation, almost as if the band are asking for them to take notice of the release date
of the album, as well as the album title.
- Again, like the album cover, the poster takes clear inspiration from the
minimalist movement. This projects ideas of simplicity, really
appealing to music fans as it connotes the intention that they purely
focus on their music. This simplistic, minimalist approach is also
recognisable in British rock band Pink Floyd’s poster, print production
for their album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’. This poster replicates the
ideas of simplicity and echoes this idea that they focus solely on their
music, as should the audience. Engaging pure music fans.
- Touching on the drawing of attention to the release date, the audience is addressed due
to the bold font of it. The boldness creates this imprint in the audiences mind, as well as
this idea that the boldness of the text infers that it is very important.
5. WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM THESE PRINT PRODUCTIONS?
- In terms of applying what I have learnt to my own work, I can look to take inspiration from this idea of
simplicity, that addresses and attracts the audience who purely want to focus on the music. As well as this, I
can look to take inspiration from the direct mode of address, if I choose to use my artist in my print
productions; as this creates a personal, intimate relationship between the audience an the artist. I also could
take inspiration from this idea of the print productions replicating a canvas-style look. I can apply to this to my
own work in terms of the idea that there is a visual representation of the ideas that I am trying to promote to
my audience.
- In conclusion, the Kaiser Chiefs address their audience incredibly well through a variety of imprinting images,
as well as taking inspiration from art movements, of which I will look to take inspiration from to apply to my
own work.
