2. Kerrang Front CoverAudience: 15-25 year olds
Gender: Both; predominantly male
This magazine is quite clearly a predominantly
rock magazine as it states at the top of the page
“rock reacts”, but also, the large use of dark
colours –black and red- that fill the front cover
suggests a more dark and depressing scene
which would appeal to people who like dark and
depressing music (which rock is normally
associated with). As well as this, the bright colour,
yellow, is used to attract the audience’s attention
and to get them to purchase it.
The cover picture is a close up of Olly Sykes who
has his bands name, ‘Bring me the Horizon’,
wrote in a large font size next to his picture; as
he and his band are associated with rock this aids
with the fact that the magazine is aimed at lovers
of rock music. Also, the close up makes the
audience feel as if they are connected to him and
know him well and due to the article about him
being about going ‘inside his mind’ then it is also
giving the audience an insight into what is to be
expected when reading it.
The modern bands that are featured on the cover (Panic at
the Disco, Five Seconds of Summer and Twenty One Pilots)
leads us to the conclusion that this magazine has been
created for a younger generation; meaning that the target
audience is teenagers.
The masthead has a cracked effect and
has an exclamation mark at the end of it
which suggests that it is trying to grab the
attention of rebellious teenagers with the
aggressiveness that it portrays.
The posters advertised at the bottom of the page have a
yellow background to grab the attention of the reader
which will make a younger audience want to buy the
magazine.
“Anger, hurt and defiance” are used at the top of the page which are all
words that are associated with rock reinforcing the fact that this
magazine is for that specific genre.
3. Rock Sound Front CoverAudience: 15-25 years old
Gender: Both; predominantly male
Names of bands in colour and enlarged
makes the audience want to buy the
magazine as they see the name of the bands
that they like and want to see what is said
about them.
The main image is of Bring Me The
Horizon’s lead singer, Oli Sykes which
demonstrates that the audience is of a
young but mature age as this band is
modern and will appeal to people in
their late teens and early 20’s. Also, he
is looking directly into the camera
which makes the audience connect
with the audience.
The font of the masthead is sophisticated which
contrasts the magazines contents and the other
fonts that are used. However, as the genre of the
magazine is stated in the title there is only a
simple font needed.
The pull quote ‘I have definitely gone too far’
intrigues the audience making them want to read
it so that they can find out what it is that he has
done to have ‘gone too far’.
The lack of text and the additional sub-photos in
the bottom right hand corner back up the fact that
the audience is of a younger age as they will be
able to recognise the bands/artists in the
photographs and the bands/artists listed around
the main image; if they see some bands that they
recognise they will want to buy the magazine.
The art cards that are advertised
appeal to a younger but more
sophisticated audience reinforcing the
idea that the target audience is of
about 15-24 years of age.
The main font on this magazine is less
sophisticated as the title which
portrays the genre as rock as this
genre is seen as appealing to the
more rebellious.
The Large amount of tattoos that are on
show also aid in stating the genre and
the target audience as they appeal the
younger generations and to lovers of
rock music.
4. Kerrang Double Page Spread
‘Slam Dunk’ which is an annual rock music festival that is held in
Leeds; this helps aid the fact that the magazine is entirely based
on rock music and aimed at teenagers who would like to go to a
festival in England.
The name of the festival has been wrote in
large yellow letters to stand out on the
page and get the audience interested.
On the right hand side of the page
there is a photograph of Brendan Urie
from Panic at the Disco (another rock
band) which has also been placed there
to gain the attention of the reader. The
fact that the photograph has been
taken on stage with the singer the
audience will feel as if they are in that
moment with him and having the same
experience; giving the reader
enjoyment and making them want to
actually be there.
On the right hand side of the
photograph there are names of other
bands –who will also perform at the
festival-; these names are in black bold
letters against a yellow background
which, again, catches the attention of
the reader and will make them want to
read the article.
Throughout the full magazine there is a border at the side of the pages that
usually suggests danger or holds a warning furthermore, this aids in the fact that
the audience is rebellious and may be searching for danger.
The pull quote “people aren’t here to see us jerk off” will be
found humorous by younger generations which, again,
reinforces that the target aoudience has a mediam target
audience of 20 year olds.
