Introduction
Working Drawings are an integral part of the construction industry and the architect’s chief means of
communication with the various levels of the authorities, clients and consultants. A comprehensive
knowledge of the format and conventions of working drawings, as well as an overall awareness of its
importance in practice is crucial for the student. Project 1 requires the students to:
 Identify and select a project designed from Studio 5
 Translate the selected building into a cemplete set of architectural working drawing (for submission to
the authorities), utilising all the formats and conventions of working drawing as they applied in
contemporary architectural practice
 Research and establish a basic understanding of statutory requirements from the authorities and fire
safety guidelines and to implement the requirements into the project
 Research and establish a basic understanding of the structural system, building services, materials and
other relevant technology and to apply the understanding into the project
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this assignment are as follows:
1. To develop an awareness of the role of technical drawings through the production of full set floor plans,
sections and elevations
2. To develop an understanding of technical drawing conventions and formats through application
3. To develop an awareness of the general nature, principles and procedures of law and legislation,
including the Uniform Building By-laws (UBBL) and local fire regulations
4. To develop an awareness of construction requirement consistent with design and performance
Building Technology 2 [BLD 61503/ARC 3523/ARC 3524] | 2
Learning Outcomes of Project
Upon successful completion of the subject, students will be able to:
1. Apply visual communication methods (technical drawing and terminology) to clearly and effectively
convey their design ideas and proposals from architectural design project.
2. Apply the practices and procedures of working drawings development.
3. Develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and legislation,
particularly Building By-laws; and its relationship to working drawings.
4. Develop and design details for their design project.
5. Produce plans drawings for submission to the various authorities in accordance to the authorities’
requirement
6. Produce detailed drawings of floor plans, section , elevations and site plan of their design
7. Produce schedule of finishes, built-up area, doors and windows
8. Produce a complete set of building plans submissions of their design that complies with building by-law
Tasks – Methodology
In groups of 5, your task is to complete the following:
Full set A1 drawings, including (but not restricted to):
a. Site Plan, Key Plan and Location Plan
b. Full set of Building Plans including Roof Plan, Sections and Elevations
c. Fire-fighting (BOMBA) Plans (separate from the Building Plans, item ‘b’)
d. Schedules: Door & Window and Natural Light & Natural Ventilation
Submission Requirement
A1 Working Drawings (stapled using 5 nos. MEDIUM stapler, rolled drawings) comprising:
1. A full set of working drawings suitable for submission including:
 Cover sheet
 Site Plan with Key and Location plans
 All level plans including roof (1:100 scale)
 2 sections (1:100 scale)
 2-4 elevations (1:100 scale), depending on site
 Fire-fighting plans or BOMBA Plans (same scale as the plans above) – a separate set of plans,
including site plan. However, sections and elevation is not required as they will be the same as the
above.
 Doors and windows schedules (1:50 scale)
 Natural light and natural ventilation calculation schedule
 Finishes indication and room area ‘box’ in every room
All drawings must comply with the conventional format of construction drawings, including:
 Title Block (with project title, scale student name and ID and other relevant information)
 Title, scale and north point (where relevant)
 Grids, dimensions, section lines and annotations
 Excellent line quality is critical. Different line thicknesses and line types communicate different ideas.
Students should use a few different lines as possible to describe their drawing. Failure to do so will
result in re-submitting the project.
 Any other relevant information
2. Weekly Tutorial Log Sheet
Students are to fill up the Tutorial Log Sheet as they go through their tutorials. The sheet will be signed by
the tutors.

To develop an awareness of the role of technical drawings through the production of full set floor plans, sections and elevations 2. To develop an understanding of technical drawing conventions and formats through application 3. To develop an awareness of the general nature, principles and procedures of law and legislation, including the Uniform Building By-laws (UBBL) and local fire regulations 4. Schedules: Door & Window and Natural Light & Natural Ventilation Submission Requirement A1 Working Drawings (stapled using 5 nos. MEDIUM stapler, rolled drawings) comprising: 1. A full set of working drawings suitable for submission including:  Cover sheet  Site Plan with Key and Location plans  All level plans including roof (1:100 scale)  2 sections (1:100 scale)  2-4 elevations (1:100 scale), depending on site  Fire-fighting plans or BOMBA Plans (same scale as the plans above) – a separate set of plans, including site plan. However, sections and elevation is not required as they will be the same as the above.  Doors and windows schedules (1:50 scale)  Natural light and natural ventilation calculation schedule  Finishes indication and room area ‘box’ in every room All drawings must comply with the conventional format of construction drawings, including:  Title Block (with project title, scale student name and ID and other relevant information)  Title, scale and north point (where relevant)  Grids, dimensions, section lines and annotations  Excellent line quality is critical. Different line thicknesses and line types communicate different ideas. Students should use a few different lines as possible to describe their drawing. Failure to do so will result in re-submitting the project.  Any other relevant information 2. Weekly Tutorial Log Sheet Students are to fill up the Tutorial Log Sheet as they go through their tutorials. The sheet will be signed by the tutors.
