Introduction
The objectives Technical drawing is the bridge between building design and physical building form. While
design represents an expression of the desired solution, technical drawings control the eventual physical
outcome of that expression. To achieve this, all aspects of technical knowledge, from structural design,
material choice, construction detailing to adherence to by-laws and safety and health requirements and
building services for user comfort and well-being, should be cohesively integrated in the final design of the
Architectural Design Project
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this assignment are as follows:
1. To develop an awareness of the role of technical drawings through the production of full set floor plans,
wall sections and detailing of the students’ final design projects
2. To develop an understanding of technical drawing conventions and formats through application
3. To develop an awareness of the general nature, principles and procedures of law and legislation,
including the Uniform Building By-laws (UBBL) and local fire regulations
4. To develop an awareness of construction details consistent with design and performance
Learning Outcomes of Project
Upon successful completion of the subject, students will be able to:
1. Apply visual communication methods (technical drawing and terminology) to clearly and effectively
convey their design ideas and proposals from architectural design project.
2. Apply the practices and procedures of working drawings development.
3. Develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and legislation,
particularly Building By-laws; and its relationship to working drawings.
4. Develop and design details for their design project.
2. Building Technology 2 [BLD 61503/ARC 3523/ARC 3524] | 2
5. Produce detailed drawings of floor plans, site plan of their design and wall-sections from selected
portion of their project.
6. Ability to develop specifications to the level of detailed required
Tasks - Methodology
In tandem with the main project of Architecture Design Project Studio 6, students are to demonstrate
knowledge of construction, technology, materials and building services, as well as UBBL and fire safety
regulations in developing their architectural design project technically.
Students must take into account the functionality of spatial requirement in relation to by-laws and
regulations, ergonomics, environmental concerns and other issues to ensure a good, healthy, safe and
comfortable living environment for all users.
Submission format: Full set A1 drawings, including (but not restricted to):
a. One (1) Building Section cutting though a significant (design) part of the building.
b. One (1) Full Height Wall Section taken from the studio 6 design building project, with detail call-out.
c. Two (2) Blow-up Details featuring a major joint (wall/floor, roof/wall, etc.), taken from the Full Height
Wall Section.
d. Full Feature Staircase Detail Drawings.
e. Full Toilet Detail Drawings.
Students to display their final works in tandem with Studio 6 final design assessment (refer submission
date). Failure to present the assignment during the assessment day will be subjected as late submission.
Submission Requirement
1. A1 (stapled at 5 points, rolled drawings) construction/technical drawings comprising:
One (1) Building Section, 1:100 scale. Small scale Key Plan showing its location required.
One (1) Full Wall Section, 1:30 scale, covering from foundation to the roof. Small scale Key Plan
showing its location is required.
Two (2) Blow-up Details from the Full Wall Section, to be drawn at appropriate scale, 1:10 or 1:5.
One detail must be a major external feature of your building, showing a complete vertical unit i.e.
one floor height (floor-to-floor). The drawing must include wall-to-floor joint/connection detail.
The other one must be a major roof feature, showing the construction of the roofing system and
emphasising the horizontal aspect of the roof. The drawing must include the roof-to-wall
joint/connection detail.
Note: If the roof design is not significant, you may choose another vertical element but must be
different from the first detail.
Details of 1 Feature Staircase, scale 1:50 for plans & sections and 1:5, 1:10, 1:20 or 1:25 for details.
Details shall include railing, steps and structural support. Need to include details of fixing methods and
connection. Small scale Key Plan showing its location required.
3. Building Technology 2 [BLD 61503/ARC 3523/ARC 3524] | 3
Details of 1 Male & Female with OKU toilet, scale 1:50 for plans & sections and 1:5, 1:10, 1:20 or 1:25
for details. To provide relevant details such as, steps, fittings, ceilings or walls. Small scale Key Plan
showing its location required.
All drawings must comply with the conventional format of construction drawings, including:
Title Block (with project title, scale student name and ID and other relevant information)
View title, scale and north point (where relevant)
Grids, dimensions, section lines and annotations
Excellent line quality is critical. Different line thicknesses and line types communicate different ideas.
Students should use a few different lines as possible to describe their drawing.
Any other relevant information
2. Tutorial Log Sheet
Students are to fill up the Tutorial Log Sheet as they go through their tutorials. The sheet shall be signed by
the tutors.
Marks Distribution
Marks shall be distributed as follows:
1. Communications: clarity of drawings, correct scale, variety and appropriate line-weight, hatching of
materials, completeness of annotation, size of text, drawing layout etc. (15%)
2. Conventions: completeness of grid lines, dimensions, labels, levels, title etc. (15%)
3. By-law compliance: staircase riser, threads, railing height etc. (5%)
4. Structure: originality, structural logic, appropriate sizing of structural members etc. (25%)
5. Buildability: appropriate setting out, correct specification, appropriate choice building materials,
construction method, fixing and connection method etc. (40%)
