The Absurdity of the Victorian Upper–Class Society
Sans irony, the title of the play, The Importance of Being Earnest – A Trivial Comedy for Serious
People, by Oscar Wilde probably would have been called "The Insignificance of Being Earnest."
This is because throughout the play all the major characters lied and were not the least bit earnest.
This comedy is a satire on the mannerisms of the Victorian upper–class society in the late 1800s. As
it is a satire, Wilde's intent was to poke fun at the aristocrats of his time by exaggerating their
behavior to criticize how substanceless their lifestyles were. Wilde incorporates various elements of
literature including genre, symbolism, and characterization to challenge the Victorian upper class'
arrogant lifestyle.
They key literary device Wilde used to popularize his critique of the Victorian upper–class was
genre. As this was a play, the genre would fall under drama. This type of drama was specifically
known as a farce: a comedic dramatic work with absurd events. This play was a comedy in the
traditional sense because it is a satire with a happy ending, as well is in the modern definition in that
it is humorous. "Inseparable from any definition of satire is its corrective purpose, expressed
through a critical mode which ridicules or otherwise attacks those conditions needing reformation in
the opinion of the satirist" (Harris). In this case the satirist would be Wilde.

Government in Upper and Lower Canada
The need for government reform in Upper and Lower Canada was created because of the
incompetent way the government managed the country, a lack of representation in the government, a
lack of understanding of the colonist's in Upper and Lower Canada, and discrimination towards the
French in Lower Canada. Numerous colonists arrived to Upper and Lower Canada to begin a new
life with a proper government however, the government in Canada did not satisfy their needs.
Firstly, the unskilled way the government ran Upper and Lower Canada upset the colonists. This
included a lack of land for the colonists, even though they were promised land when they arrived in
British North America. Settlers were unhappy about land distribution – particularly about the clergy
and crown reserves and the land speculators that were part of the Family Compact. Also, absentee
landlords overpriced and tied up prime land. The settlers were also unhappy that the building of
roadways was hindered by the clergy and crown reserves. The colonists were unhappy with the
government and the "colonists complained loudly about land and roads. Most knew that the Family
Compact was to blame and they did not disguise their anger" (Pg. 66). This meant that the colonists
were aware that the Family Compact was responsible for this problem because they completely
ignored the colonist's complaints and they did not do anything to help them. They could veto any
laws passed by the Assembly and they did; they shut down

Virtual Reality Rehabilitation : An Upper Extremity...
The experimenters, from the Journal of Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation, use this study to
explain how patients who had a stroke and are experiencing an upper extremity functional deficit
can benefit from virtual reality rehabilitation. Upper extremity functional deficit can include
weakness, coordination problems, swelling, changes of muscle tone and changes in sensation.
Patients are given high intensity repetitive task specific training to help improve the deficit, and it
does work. But the patients get bored of the training and it is also hard to find the necessary
resources to even do the training. This is where the virtual reality rehabilitation comes in. Virtual
reality rehabilitation is a computer generated interactive simulation that imitates reality and provides
users with an artificial environment including sensory information similar to real world experience.
With this program patients are able to play different games to help them combat the deficit. They
also do not get bored with the rehabilitation since they can play many games. There had been studies
in the past that had looked at this form of rehabilitation and shown that it does work and help the
patients. But, the study never assessed the functional outcome or the effectiveness in a randomized
controlled experiment. Experimenters Joon–Ho Shin, Hokyoung Ryu and Seong Ho Jang from

Upper Canada was created in 1791 to accommodate the Loyalist refugees and land–hunting farmers
of the United States after the American Revolution. In addition of the existing two colonies, a third

The Civil Law of England was formally introduced into Upper Canada in 1792 (Riddell 165). Their

The Bundesrat is a body within the German government that represents the interests of the
individual states and thus acts as a link between the Federation and the federal states. The Bundesrat
is made up of appointed representatives of the federal state government with each state given a
certain amount of votes in regards to their population. In total there are 69 seats with each Lander
given between three to six seats. (Reuter 2009, pg. 17) The Bundesrat democratic legitimacy comes

"The Dangerous Separation of the American Upper Middle Class"
Publisher, Richard V. Reeves, in his online article, "The Dangerous Separation of the American
Upper Middle Class," shares how income, education, and political power have caused a split in the
upper middle class. Reeves's purpose is to convey the idea that the upper middle class has shifted
from being a sociological curiosity to an economic and political problem. Reeves outlines how the
upper middle class that was once considered an accessible hope or American dream, is now a
blockade and an obstacle for others. He adopts a rational and analytical tone to appeal to the reader's
sense of reason. Reeves cites convincing facts and statistics as well as successfully uses emotional
appeals. However, toward the end of the article his attempts to appeal to reader's emotions, weakens
the credibility and ultimately his argument.
He appeals to his audience's reason with theoretical language and statistics claiming that, "There is
plenty of arguments about the extent of inequality. But nobody questions the fact that in recent
decades, incomes in the upper middle class are rising." There are nine visual graphs showing how
the upper middle is rising above the rest of its class. Reeves uses line plot graphs to illustrate how
the income of the upper middle class is rising while the lower middle class is falling. These graphs
are very simple to understand and inform people thoroughly. Using recursive ordering, he illustrates
his points concerning education and political power but, always reverts to how they show the gap in
the middle class and its inequality. This strengthens his argument by bringing his reasonings back to
the main point. Once again, we see Reeves using reason and logic to evoke a rational response from
his readers. He is clearly using logos to influence his audience to agree with his claim.
Adding to his logos persuasion, Reeves uses strong appeals to pathos with many pulls at emotion.
The topic of wealth and poverty is close to many people's hearts. While readers may look at the
statistics and reasonings, some will immediately entrust the author to provide them with accurate
and meaningful

The upper class were 10% of the population and lived a good life, but also depended on loyalty. The
feudal system is made out of many classes, and the most privileged class was the upper class. The
upper class is made out of nobles, including the king and his vassals. They got most of the benefits
from the work that serfs did. Noblewomen had the job of looking after the household. When the
Lord was gone, his role was taken over by his wife. She would make sure that their children learned

Workers work for whatever their local lord needs, having little to no rights overall. Serfs are bound
to the land that they work on, having almost no control over their own lives. They aren't allowed to
be traded but they aren't allowed to leave their land, either. They serve nobles and pay taxes to their
lord (Richardson). A worker would owe the local lord obligations the same way the knight would
owe his lord obligations. The workers would owe loyalty, obligations, and allegiance to their local

Our society is divided into many different classes in order to distinguish people by their classes.
However, we also divided each level inside each classes, such as the middle class has three different
classes, lower–middle class, middle–middle class, and upper–middle class. Those classes inside a
class also represent some kind of social problems as a whole. Recently there has been a hot topic
whether the upper middle class has great impact on the whole society. The gap between the upper

Categorizing The Upper Class
To categorize the types of knowledge I would say that you would have to live the life style or know
someone close to the life style. I do not think theses' categories of class are equal because
individuals of classes above them typically require hard work, knowing people, or to be born into.
For the surviving in poverty category it seems like the field of questions leans more towards almost
homeless people. People that can do a lot with very little. Also, you would have to know how to be

The lower class I wouldn't think would have a clue about unless they fell from it, but the middle
might know people within the class gaining access to it. It would be hard for someone of the lower
two classes to gain or have access to because typically people of the upper class do not want any
other people in. The class that I had the most marks in was the middle class. I was not surprised by

Humans of the Upper Paleolithic era brought about numerous cultural innovations. In this time
period we see the first art in the form of paintings in caves (Cyraboski). With the spark of creativity,
the roaring fire of the first artistic cultural revolution was born. A wealth of new materials started
making their way into the archeological record. For example, clay, used for pots and figurines, and
bones, which were carved into beads and necklaces for personal adornment. The greatest
culmination of this newly born culture is shown in the burial rites of their dead. This is a brand new
cultural trait born in this era.

Class's Upper, Middle, And Social Class In The Victorian Era
The Victorian era society was divided into three class's upper, middle, and working class. The upper
class was made of aristocrats, noble's dukes, and other wealthy families that worked in the court
system. They held the most powerful positions that gave them authority, better living conditions, and
other facilities. The upper class of society had rules such as the proper forms of address, what to
wear that would be appropriate it was something crucial to get right. Many aristocrats did not work
as for centuries together their families had been gathering enough money for each generation to live
life in luxurious. The upper class was broken down into three subdivisions which were the royal
class, upper middle class, and lower upper class. Middle class put pressures on the upper classes for
representation which resulted in series of reform acts giving commoners increased representation in
parliament.
The importance of the middle–class grew in the Victorian period the diverse group that had
everyone from the working class and the higher class. The middle class had industrialists and
wealthy bankers it also included poor clerks that earned only half as much as skilled workers. In the
upper middle class in this group included the Church of England clergymen, military and naval
officers, men in high–status branches of law and medicine. The lower middle class consisted of
small store workers and clerical works they needed to be able to read, but nothing too high needed
