Parable Of The Prodigal Son Thesis Statement
INTRODUCTION
My thesis statement is about how the Parable of the Prodigal Son can be used to understand the
mercy of God.
I will show the reader the different ways we can understand the mercy of God in the Parable of the
Prodigal Son through the following sections that describe the process of mercy as a conversion,
from who are the main characters in the parable within the gospel of Luke to how that mercy is
destroyed by the different actions of the human being.
The (1) first section is about who are the human beings in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, their
principal role and actions in the story followed by; (2) section two about the self–awareness of the
Prodigal Son, who was truly the prodigal son and what he desired in life; (3) the ... Show more

The Parable of the Prodigal Son is extremely rich in meaning, especially in mercy. Mercy
constitutes the center of Christian spirituality and of our life in Christ; it is a very clear and profound
representation of the reality of the human being when he does not appreciate the goodness and love
of God. The parable of the Prodigal Son presents the moment in which the youngest son moves
away from the father in a selfish way, disregarding the goodness of the fatherly love, to begin an
uncertain journey that he believes will bring him to fuller and more abundant life, and he departs in
search for freedom and happiness.
The parable describes, then, a progress; slow at first, but triumphant at the end when he returns, with
a broken heart and freely abandoned, to his father's house. The God of Mercy in the parable invites
the human being to discover the meaning of life through the experience of the lost son who begins to
discover himself as a human being and reveals himself before his

Mother to Son and the Coora Flower: a Poetry Analysis
Mother to Son and The Coora Flower: A Poetry Analysis
In poetry, more so than any other form of literature, understanding sound, meaning and theme are
key to understanding the work itself. In the case of the poems "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes
and "The Coora Flower" by Gwendolyn Brooks these elements, when heavily focused upon, allow
the reader to discover the message that these writers were attempting to convey. Thought both
writers use these elements to their fullest to communicate their respective messages, the method and
messages vary greatly.
In the poem Mother to Son, Hughes tells the tale of a mother speaking to her son about life and the
hardships that one must face to make it in the world. Hughes uses extended metaphor to ... Show

Brooks also relies heavily on nuances within the structure and language to establish the message.
The stanzas that contain information about school are longer and articulate. The lines flow and are
inviting. When the lines about reality are read they are short, cold and very deliberate; they give a
sense of rigidity. The language is very direct and in some case demanding "I must...". All stanzas
about what's "real" are two lines long while the ones that focus on school are four lines long. The
statements toward school came off as being very cynical to me. "It was restful, learning nothing
necessary... At least you can sleep", the use of "at least" in these lines and the line that follows are
what created the cynicism for me. It seemed as if she didn't respect what went on in school because
it wasn't the harshness of her everyday life. Capitalization is something that caught my attention.
The word "Real" always has the first letter capitalized, which to me established a mood of
seriousness within the statements that contained it. I feel this is true the second use of "Coming
Home" and "Man" in line fourteen. The capitalization on these words was carefully chosen to
continue facilitating the theme and meaning. There is one line in this poem that caught my attention
and required me to reread repeatedly to get what she truly meant that line is "which is not free from
grief". At first I thought it was just in reference to the previous line

Nobody's Son Quotes Analysis
In nobody's son are many quotes that make you think deeply. Reading the book Nobody's son, I
found a quote that caught my eye, at first it seems complicated to understand but when I reread it, it
made sense. "Home isn't just a place, I have learned. It is also a language" –Luis Alberto Urrea. It is
a powerful quote and it imparts a great meaning. This quote is in the first section of the book. Urrea
is talking about an interview he had in México City. In the firsts years of his life, Urrea did not know
what a home was until Mama Chayo took care of him. Was there when he feel like home, because in
that place Urrea received the love and care that his parents could not give to him. Where is home?
What is home? It is incredible how a quote can change the way we think. I had not thought before
what a home is, until I read this quote. What a home is? Literally thinking a home is a building,
dorm or apartment where we reside, and we share with our family, relatives or friends. A place
where you spend most of your days and nights. These does ... Show more content on

Mama Chayo and her family gave Urrea the love and care that he needed. When some of us think
about home, we think of problems, homework, housework, bills, and responsibilities. We never look
beyond of all of that and see the importance of a home. Maybe we need to stop and reflect what
would you do without your home? That was how Urrea feel when he haven't had a place that he
could call home. In the other hand, we use to call home to our native land, for example I consider
Mexico as my home. But Urrea born in the border between Mexico and the United States, when he
was five he moved to the United States. At that age what was home for him? The U.S. had became

Death Of A Salesman Father Son Relationship
Many dramas use family relationships as a primary force of the plot. In Death of a Salesman, Willy's
relationship with his son's allows the author, Arthur Miller, to reveal the conflicts that can result in a
father son relationship. Willy's relationship with his older son, Biff differs in conflict from his
relationship with his younger son, Happy. Both relationships have their flaws and both relationships
have suffered from Willy's inability to teach his son's positive values.
Happy, the younger of the two sons, has taken on many of his father's traits. Although he has a rather
successful job, he feels the need to embellish the truth of his success just as Willy has done in the
past. (quote). Happy has also taken on his father's trait

Relationship Between Fathers and Sons Essay
Both poems "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke and "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert
Hayden are poems in which the speaker (a son in both cases) attempts to explain his complex
relationship with his father. It seems that the two poets are reflecting back in their early lives as
young boys and showing different appreciation toward their father. In my interpretation "My Papa's
Waltz" is about a boy and that is excited that his father got home to play with him. Only problem is
the speakers father is drunk and it hard to enjoy himself but he held on because the unconditional
love he has for him, as the line says "The Whiskey on your breath / could make a boy dizzy; / But I
hung like death: " (1–2–3). However, "Those Winter Sundays" is more ... Show more content on

Also is a sign of being responsible and not indolent.
The impression that I get from "My Papa's Waltz" is that the boy's father is an alcoholic and
irresponsible. I say this because as the father and the boy were playing around in the kitchen The
unconscious father could of drop a hot pan that the mother could have been cooking on and cause
serious damage. That to me shows that the father don't really think about the possibilities. On the
contrary "Those Winter Sundays" "Sundays too my father got up early" (1) shows that the father is a
hard workingman, that everyday of the week he is up early "with cracked hands that ached / from
labor in the weekday weather made" (3–4). The speaker's father is a man that did hard labor to keep
heat in the house and also made sure his son was looking sharp for example, "polished my good
shoes as well" (12). Overall he was very responsible and loving even though the speaker didn't think
so at the time seeing that he didn't show appreciation and "no one ever thanked him" (5).
When it comes to the mood the speakers portray different attitudes towards their fathers. In "My
Papa's Waltz the speakers mood is positive while the poet reflect back negatively and in "Those
Winter Sundays" the speaker attitude is like whatever and negative while the poet also reflect back
an realizes that his father was a

Living The Split Of Sons And Daughters
Living the Split Sons and daughters; the differences between them is more than just a physical
apperance. They are treated differently, not only by society, but also in their own household. While
parents may not realize it, they treat their sons and daughters different whether it be late night
curfews, work ethic or a difference in atmosphere. One of the clearest differences is curfew. Parents
often restrict a daughter 's freedoms, one being restricting the possibility of being out late due to fear
of danger. The probability of a woman being harassed driving back from a friend's house or at a
concert surrounded by people is highly unlikely, yet, they are still told that they have to be home and
are unable to experience events like a male would. Males are seen as being stronger and not in
danger of others whereas women are fragile and easy victims. Why is this? The answer has its roots
in early childhood development. Boys, as a child and young adult, are taught, by their parents, to
treat the girls gently and be rough with other boys. Girls are taught to be sweet, respectable and, as
said before, gentle. Because of the lack of aggression girls experience as a child, they are seen to be
"more fragile" and in turn, are more likely to be put in a dangerous situation with little to no self–
defense. So, because parents teach their kids different traits of gender as a child, it carries on into
early adulthood making the parent believe what they have implemented into

Night Father Son Relationship
New studies show that father–son relationships affect grown men, and how they deal with stressful
situations on a day–to–day basis. (Tobin 1) Father and Son relationships are a crucial part of a
person's life and it shapes who the person will become; however, it is in the most strenuous
circumstances that, in order to survive, a strong father–son relationship is vital. In Hamlet, a play by
William Shakespeare and in the novel Night, by Elie Wiesel, Hamlet and Elie are pushed in different
ways in trying to help their fathers.Night by Elie Wiesel and Hamlet by William Shakespeare
emphasizes how necessary a father–son relationship is in a boy's life.
At the beginning of Night, by Elie Wiesel, Elie's bond with his father is weak but as the story ...

When a boy has a father present in his life he is able to look up to his father. Since he has a role
model he is able to know what to do and what not to do in certain situations. Sons who have been
nurtured by their fathers are able to stay strong in troubling situations, and are able to help their
father out. "Everything I do in this house is to keep my father well. At the same time, I quail before
the idea that he could rebound into solid physical health. What keeps me sane is that his body's
decline has matched his mind's. My hope is to stay with him until he dies, right here in his house"
(Thorndike 170). In John Thorndike's book The Last of his Mind: A year in the Shadow of
Alzheimer's John is taking care of his father for a year he will not leave his father's. John has a very
strong relationship with his father. This relates to Night because Elie is starting to take care of his
father when he is getting older and John has starting taking care of his father and growing closer to
him in this time of wondering. "I tightened my grip on my father's hand. The old, familiar fear: not

Father Son Relationship In Last Of The Mohicans
The father–son relationship in Last of the Mohicans is one of closeness. The fathers and sons live
together, hunt together, fight together. There is a physical closeness, not just a emotional parent–
child connection. There is a respect between the son and the father that is more like a man to man
relationship instead of a man to boy relationship. The father–daughter relationship in Last of the
Mohicans is somewhat stereotypical. The father is the protector, the provider, the authority figure.
The daughter is the dependent one, feeling the need for the father to be there, to care for them. The
daughter role is not one of independence. However, because Munro is a military man, it is revealed
that his military duties are more important than

Father Son Relationships In Things Fall Apart
"Every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice."
This quote by Charles F Kettering embodies what a father son relationship really is. A father is
someone a son looks up to, whether in a good or bad light depends on the situation. Father son
relationships can take two paths, one where the son does everything the father hates and the others
were the son does everything the father does. Fathers play a major role in their son's life with
examples of the relationship found throughout the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in the
characters of Okonkwo, Nwoye and Unoka. For better or worse Unoka played a major role in
Okonkwo's life. "It was fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father." (Achebe 13).
Throughout the entirety of Okonkwo's life, his relationship with his father would affect his decisions
which were always based on the question, "Would my father do this?", and if he would he would do
the opposite. Okonkwo viewed his father as a failure and did not want to even be seen as being
related to him. Okonkwo got this impression at a young age, "Even as a young boy he resented his
father's failure and weaknesses ..." (Achebe 13). The lessons that Okonkwo got from ... Show more

Okonkwo took all of the feelings of how he felt about his father and made sure to teach his son the
right way unlike his father. These teaching did not go over well for Nwoye however, "Nwoye was
only twelve years old but was already causing his father great anxiety for his incipient laziness."
(Achebe 13) Okonkwo's constant shows of how a man should be really had the opposite effect on
Nwoye. Nwoye developed into a boy that resembled his father in the way he acted, and that
bothered Okonkwo. The relationship between Okonkwo and Nwoye shows that not only does the
father son relationship affect the son it also affects his son and so

A Father Talking To His Son Thesis Statement
Thesis Statement: If this story had been a father talking to his son it would have been a different
conversion, because the father would have explained that men are the sole providers for the family
and to be family oriented.
The father would have told his son that men was the head of the household and that it was the man's
responsibility to provide all the needs for his family. This concept of the man providing for the
family began back in the caveman days when the male would go out and gather firewood and
invented the tools needed in order to kill wild animals for food. The father would have also told his
son that he would someday be the unquestioned ruler of his own household one day and he would be
expected to be strong and to make

Summary Of Mother To Son By Langston Hughes
Stevie Wonder, whom was an American musician, once said, "Mama was a great teacher, a teacher
of compassion, love, and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet
flower of love." This quote by Stevie Wonder helps us understand the fact that mothers try, in the
best ways, to see you succeed by teaching from the mother's perspective and the experiences she has
been through to get you to see the world in a different way. Just like the quote, in 'Mother to Son' we
also see the emphasis on the teachings or life lessons of a mother and how the mother tries to make
the son understand by teaching him that success is something you have to work for, just like the
mother had to and still has to do in her life. In Langston Hughes' 'Mother to Son' the poem portrays
a mother who informs her son about the life she has lived along with the difficulties that she
encountered and has overcame, hence the fact that she is telling her son. The mother explains to her
son that despite the difficulties and challenges that come to you and are ahead of you in life, you
must not give up because motivation and determination will push you through life, which is what
becomes the overall theme of this poem. Langston Hughes' first method to clearly display the theme
of perseverance is through the use of an extended metaphor within the whole poem. The constantly
acknowledged metaphor throughout this poem is the comparison of the mother's life to a set of
crystal stairs. In the poem the mother says "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair," this metaphor is
to portray that the mother's life hasn't been easy going and beautiful like a set of crystal stairs would
be. Furthermore, it helps us get a clear image that the mother's life has been filled with ups and
downs. The mother is portrayed to have had a rough life, but as the reader continues to read the
poem we see that she pushes through these hard times and does not give up to prove that
determination will get you far; which we see when she says "For I'se still goin', honey, I'se still
climbin'" which is the continuation of her prospering. Furthermore, Langston Hughes incorporated
imagery and diction into this poem to get his audience to visualize the

Obstacles In The Mother To Son By Langston Hughes
The poem Mother to Son by Langston Hughes is a free verse conversation between a mother and her
son. The mother talks about the stairs using it as a metaphor for life. She outlines life not being easy
by telling her son that the stairs she ascended on was not perfect. When Langston wrote this essay,
life was difficult particular for people of color. The mother tells the son that he will have numerous
obstacles in life by saying the stairs had various challenges to get pass. Of course, the mother in the
poem tries to encourage her son to keep moving in life. The way the poem opens, it looks like the
son was feeling discouraged and asked for her advice. It appears that life had thrown a curve ball at
the son and he wants to give up. She begins

The Sun And My Son The Fanatic
In "Men in the Sun" and "My Son the Fanatic", both authors discuss the way in which a nostalgic
relation to the past and the loss of one's sense of self, as a result of being uprooted or displaced, lead
to unsuccessful or poor assimilation to new communities. Ghassan Kanafani employs frequent
flashbacks and shifts of narrative perspectives as formal mechanisms to reflect that people who
either cling to or are troubled by their past always have great difficulty adjusting to a new way of
life. Hanif Kureshi uses an extreme example with the reversal of roles played by father and son in an
immigrant family. He argues that even when immigrants try to escape their past and start a new life,
such attempts are often futile because of failure to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Abu Qais was seeking help from Ustaz Selim in his own imagination he asks, "would you
have been willing to carry all your years on your shoulder and flee across the desert to Kuwait to
find a crust of bread"? Since Ustaz Selim cannot possibly reply, this question actually demands Abu
Qais' own answer. Abu Qais certainly regards his yearning for old life as a responsibility that he
feels obliged to maintain, to carry on his shoulder. He also thinks that fleeing to Kuwait is a gesture
of betrayal from his past. And the sense of betrayal grows even more formidable as he realizes that
the best outcome of his sacrifice is "a crust of bread", which is barely an acceptable standard of
living. Ruminating in the past makes it impossible for Abu Qais to construct a new identity and
ultimately draws him to his old identity. When Abu Qais discusses with his wife, he says "(We'll be
able to) buy one or two olive shoots... build a shack somewhere... if I arrive". At this time, Abu Qais
realizes that moving forward is the only way to achieves his dream of returning to his shack and
olive trees in his village.
What's more, Ghassan utilizes flashbacks not only to give the reader the backgrounds of the three
main characters, but also to provide evidence for what traps them and motivates them to move
forward. Among all of them, Abu Qais is the oldest character who clings to his past the most. It is
clear how his obsessions to his past lead to his decision to move forward.

Benefits Of Your Son Becoming A Boy Scout
The Benefits of Your Son Becoming a Boy Scout
The Boy Scouts of America have been around for over a century and continue to be popular today.
There are many reasons for this, but above all them are the benefits that boys learn during their time
as a Boy Scout. The following are only a few of the things that kids learn from scouting.
Learning team work
Boys do activities together in the Scouts, and much of the time success depends upon working as a
team. Preteen and teenage boys often have difficulty learning to put the success of a group before
their own success, but in the Boy Scouts, this is something that your son will learn. As an adult,
working with others as a team in the world of business or government is common. Those who have

The Prodigal Son ( Luke 15 : 11-32 )
Introduction The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32) is one of the most all–encompassing parables told in
the canon of the New Testament. It carries both the simplistic messages about faith in god and
forgiveness of sin, making it accessible to those with the most rudimentary understanding of
Christianity as a whole. At the same time, it is littered with small nuances that allow for scholars to
dig into the deeper meanings and the perfectly blended symbolism inside of text, in which historical,
social, and cultural norms are used to emphasize God's gift of faith and those that refuse to accept it.
In the parable itself, a man has two sons. The younger asks for half the inheritance to strike out on
his own early. The father allows it and the son spends every last cent of his money, leaving him far
from home and feeding pigs to make ends meet. He decides to return home to ask to be a servant to
his father to survive. Upon returning to his father, he's embraced, kissed, and adorned with robes, a
ring, and sandals without question. The prized calf is killed and a feast is held for him. This angers
the older brother, who refuses to participate even when the father begs him to.
The Inheritance Even in the first line, the parable's various meanings show their true colors.
Opening with the phrase "A man who had two sons" has differing scholarly implications. It is
possible that one represents the average person in Jewish life while the other would be the religious
elite. It could be

In the book Night, there were three father son relationships. They were all very different but at the
same time had many similarities. Being in the Holocaust really changed their relationships. Eliezer
and Chlomo and Rabbi Eliahou and his son share some similarities. Both of the fathers worry about
their children. Another reason is because at Eliahou's son left him towards the end, but Eliezer
thought about leaving his father earlier in the book. The difference between them is Eliezer never
actually left his son, and prayed to God to give him the strength to never turn into Eliahou's son.

Mother To Son Tone
Tone: The Emotion of a Story The poem "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes is the story of a
mother speaking of life's hardships to her son. The poem starts off with the protagonist's haunting
words about the difficulty of life; however, as the story goes on, her words of despair become words
of wisdom to her son on never giving up. Hughes organizes this poem by transitioning the tone from
hopelessness to encouragement to convey the raw message that although life can be hard, anyone
can reach their goals with effort. The beginning of the story starts off with the speaker's somber
words of life's difficulties, thus, setting the mood to a glum start. Addressing her son, the speaker
says, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. It's had tacks in it. And splinters..." Her blunt tone
makes the story seem much more personal; there is not any sugar coating in her tone which is
exactly what would be expected of a mother. By trying not to set false expectations on the easiness
of life, Hughes uses a blunt tone from the speaker to let her son know how life really is. By setting
off the mood of the story as drab, the later transition of tone will be more effective. The speaker then
goes on to talk about "goin' in the dark where there ain't been no light" which again emphasizes on
the drab, pessimistic tone of the story. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He transitions the tone of the poem from one of despair and hopelessness to one of encouragement
which adds a realistic effect to the poem while still encouraging the reader. There is a thin line
between being completely discouraging and being realistic; the speaker in the story seems to keep
the perfect balance between these two lines. With the skillfully organized tone, the author helps the
reader better understand the mood of the story as well as the difficult

While these changes did in fact increase sales volume and profits, it damaged the reputation of
Steinway and Sons. Critics and buyers began to challenge the quality of Steinway and Sons' pianos.
Over the next 10 years, Henry Steinway is replaced by several CEO's, only to worsen the calls from
critics challenging the quality of Steinway and Sons' pianos. In November of 1984, CBS announced
the sale of Steinway and Sons for $50 million to John and Robert Birmingham (Gourville).
Although the Birmingham brothers had no experience in the musical business, they set out to re–
establish Steinway and Sons as the maker of the highest quality pianos in the world. CEO Bruce
Stevens set out to assure everyone, customers, employees, and dealers, that the new owners were
highly committed to quality. The company now became refocused and returned to what had made
them so successful. Aside from the newfound focus on quality, the Birmingham brothers expanded
Steinway and Sons' product line. It now included the Boston Piano line introduced in 1992, the
Steinway Limited Edition pianos introduced 1993, and the Crown Jewel Collection of Steinway
pianos introduced in 1994. Despite these positive changes by Stevens and his team, the running of
Steinway and Sons was once again constrained by limited financial resources. The company was
again sold on April 18, 1995 to Dana Messina and Kyle Kirkland for $100 million (Gourville).

Father and Son's "Helluva Piss" – Similarities and Differences
In Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison illustrates the relationship between two Macon Dead's, father
and son. Throughout the novel, Macon II and Macon III, better known as Milkman, have bouts of
conflict and reconciliation, and with each interaction their similarities and differences are gradually
revealed. However, there is one image which reveals truths about both characters without any
interaction. Set decades apart, both father and son are set in parallel scenes, urinating in the
wilderness, in the open air. Perhaps small and seemingly unimportant, but these actions and images
can be unpacked further than face value; subtle details planted by Morrison can be used to reveal

might only believe that this slight difference was caused by contrasting circumstances. But the
question can be asked: what's the difference between Macon making his own decision, versus
Milkman begging for permission? Really digging deep into these images, we notice that these
images help to show how Macon seems to exercise control over himself, is able to forge ahead into

Baldwin wrote an essay, entitled ?Notes of a Native Son,? which described the events that took
place around the time of his father?s death. Being one of his trademark talents, he also inserted

many experiences and perspectives of his own which could have been shared with his son. The
father–son relationship is a very important base of learning, for the son, about his environment, and
since young Baldwin separated himself from his father, he lost that chance.
Although Baldwin did not really get to know his father, he began to look back on his life and realize
that his father wanted only the best for him. His father would gloat with pride about how wonderful
a preacher Baldwin was, during the short time that he was a preacher. James Baldwin could
remember his father actually was ?grinning with pleasure? after his sermons, as opposed to the
continuous look of disgust and hatred that he was used to as he was growing up (79). Instead of
working off of the happier times that he had with his father, Baldwin ignored those times and
focused on the many times where tensions occurred. His father also tried to spend time with his
kids, but his ?inability to establish contact? made his kids actually fear whenever he was home (65).
If he tried to play with them, they cried in fear; if he brought home a surprise, like a huge

Macgregor Fathers Sons And Hockey Summary
"Fathers, Sons and Hockey", by Roy MacGregor, is a short essay about the nature of father–son
relationships in general and, more specifically, in hockey. MacGregor asserts that, despite what may
be true about other paternal relationships, in hockey the father–son relationship is reinforced through
constant bonding and mutual support. In order to understand precisely how MacGregor makes his
case, it is necessary first to explain his exploration of ideas put forth about father–son relationships
in general. Second, the reader needs to understand his development of the idea that relationships in
hockey provide an exception to general perceptions about the distant nature of father–son
interactions. Thirdly, one needs to be able to follow MacGregor's ... Show more content on

[Unfortunately most of MacGregor's responses are irrelevant or unsatisfactory.] Also,
MacGregor comments about Walt Disney, that he retreated to his" . . . empire that portrayed fathers

songs were written about fathers. [MacGregor [MacGregor's arguments are faulty here; perhaps
Disney does portray fathers pejoratively but that does not decrease the relevance or factuality of his
claim. MacGregor also completely ignores the role of the mother, except to say that she might attend
a hockey game or two to cheer on her son. In the context of the twenty–first century, MacGregor's
focus solely on the father in the hockey family is chauvinistic and unrealistic.] Many mothers
perform the same duties as fathers, negating the argument about hockey and its ability to foster
father–son relationships. [Lastly, MacGregor uses anecdotal evidence, which, while illustrating his
point, should be avoided in a formal

Biff As A Son In Arthur Miller's Death Of A Salesman
Death of a Salesman Friends and family put pressure on anyone who don't follow what they expect
their dreams and goals to be. These pressures can make or break a person who just wants to be
accepted. In the book, Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller, Biff has not followed his father's path
of becoming a "rich" salesman and has been known as the failure son.
Biff is the oldest son of the Loman family, who's lost, and the failure of the family. His father Willy
says to Linda, "Biff is lost. In the greatest country in the world a young man with such–personal
attractiveness, gets lost. And such a hard worker. There's one thing about Biff–he's not lazy." (16).

Relationship Between Father And Son
The function of a father might be a difficult assignment when raising a son. The suitable relationship
among father and son perhaps can be; the father sets the regulations and the son obeys them

because of what a father expects from his son. as an example inside the narratives, "Death of a

but in times of trouble, Willie is the more empathetic one.
In evaluating Willie and Troy, as fathers, one person can feel more empathy in Willie for his
everlasting struggle to maintain a home. Willie is alone when it comes to making important
payments, due to the fact Willie's sons, Happy and Biff, cannot hold their jobs. It's obvious that Biff
can not hold a job, and has no longer made any money properly; consequently, Willies struggle to
make payments for the house has been hard. On the other hand, Troy, the protagonist in the
narrative, "Fences" also has the obligation of taking care of a home. However, in contrast to Willie,
Troy had assistance in paying for his home when he obtained a check from the government. Troy
obtained the check when his brother Gabriel, became injured at a war. That money has

Characterisation Of The Father And Son In Cormac...
4. Discuss how one novel you have studied constructs complex characters to represent complex
ideas.
The use of characterisation in a text can be used to represent complex ideas. Cormac McCarthy's
2006 novel, The Road, follows the journey of a man and son that face several events that challenge
their humanity in order to survive the post–apocalyptic America. By studying the characterisation of
the father and son in The Road, it is revealed that complex ideas are represented. Readers may find
that the existentialist ideas of death and violence being unavoidable, love able to be shown through
actions, every decision having both rewards and repercussions and when humans are put in extreme
or difficult situations, core values and beliefs may be abandoned, are promoted through the actions
and thoughts of the characters. These ideas are developed especially through the four main events in
the novel through the use of dark imagery and descriptive language.
Death and violence are unavoidable and we must find purpose in life with the acceptance of this
fact. Throughout the novel, the father and son are forced to react to several events where this idea is
evident and promoted. Although the father is characterised as logical and morally conflicted, he
prioritises the boy's safety. This is revealed through some of the main events that occur in the novel,
such as when the duo encounter a man struck by lightning and on the verge of death. Despite his
son's pleas to help the man, the

1.2. "Fathers And Sons"
"Fathers and Sons" is a story from the collection Winner Take Nothing, written in 1933. The narrator
is thirty eight years old Nick Adams, who is driving across the country with his son. It is his
homecoming which evokes memories. The main plot is composed mostly around Nick's memories
about his childhood and his father. Such composition makes an impression of a chronicle containing
the description of the relationship between three gen–erations of men. It is also the last story about
Nick Adams. Hemingway bluntly highlights in this short story the theme of masculinity. There are
all elements he always believed to be manly: fishing, haunting, guns and desperate attempts to prove
courage and being a real man. There is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also frequently touches upon an issue of veterans' impaired ability to establish social relations,
for example a marriage. In "Soldier's Home" Krebs wanted everything to be simple because the
world seems to be very complex. Young women look modern and everybody seems to be involved
in political relationships. Krebs was stuck between enjoying the girls' look and reluctance to start a
conversation. While describing the ladies, there is a frequent repetition of the word "like". Krebs
liked particularly everything about those girls, still he was only observing. This was his attempt to
avoid consequences and talking lies, again. "Vaguely he wanted a girl but he did not want to have to
work to get her. He would have liked to have a girl but he did not want to have to spend a long time

Father Vs. Son Rivalry In Finding Nemo
One of the bigger conflicts in the play is the battle rivalry between the king and the prince. Which is
similar to struggle of Uranus vs. Saturn or Saturn vs. Jupiter in ancient mythology. This struggle is a
prime example of the rivalry of the values of a father figure and the values of a son. Father versus
son conflict are evident in many different people's lives and many families in today's world. Think
about every teenage guy with their dad's, they constantly butt heads and have conflicting ideas. The
teenager in their own minds think they are always right, while the Father who has life experience
has his own ideas and is trying to develop their child into a successful adult and human being.

Their is the one of the older son where he does not want to move away from his childhood home to
a home in a suburb in closer to the city where his dad got a job at. His girlfriend breaks up with him
due to him moving away, so the oldest son blames his father for this and eventually runs away to try
to reconcile with his ex girlfriend. The father and son reconcile though, and never argue again.
Unlike in the play where the King and the Prince reconcile, then they eventually end up in conflict
and opposition again. Another example of father versus son conflict is one of the other boys as he
strives for his dad's attention, yet his dad constantly ignores him and he finally thinks its enough and
runs away from his family. This is alot different than the play because in the play his the Prince's
family does not try to save the Prince where as in the movie the whole family searches for the
younger brother of the family. These two forms of entertainments are very different and yet have
certain similarities for example the key father versus son conflict, while the difference between the
two is that one the conflict is resolved, while in the other the conflict is resolved for a brief part of
the plot, but is soon reignited by the Prince's fulfillment of the prophecy which

Furthermore, unlike Willie and his two sons, Troy's son, Cory, had a job and also assisted Troy with
payments. The portrayal between, Willie and Troy as fathers, has had an impact in the development
of their sons differently. Firstly, Willie has always had high hopes in his older son, Biff. Willie
believed that in raising Biff, he will one day be successful, and ambitious. However, it is a pity that
it never turned out that way. In fact, throughout the story, Biff reveals that he is not ambitious. "Hap,
the trouble is we weren't brought up to grub for money. I don't know how to do it." (Gioia, 2010) It
is a shame that Willie is a hardworking man who dreams in success and Biff was not born with equal
desire. It would not be a surprise if Willie felt heartbreak; to be unable to set an example for his son
Biff to follow. On the other hand, Troy could be described as a character that is selfish. Throughout
the story, "Fences" Troy reveals his selfishness when interfering with Cory's potential in football,
and telling him that working is more important. "You go on down there to that A&P and see if you
can get your job back. If you can't do both...then you quit the football team." (Gioia, 2010)
Undoubtedly, Troy's interest is more concentrated in ensuring that the bills get paid, than to agree
with Cory playing football. Furthermore Troy wants Cory to maintain that job because

This poem could either be taken in a happy tone or a dark tone. The main theme Hall is trying to
express is that once a person has a child, their lives are changed forever. In the first line, "My son,
my executioner," is saying that once a child comes into the world, in a sense the parent's life is taken
away. Yet as morbid as that sounds, the parent's life is made eternal through their child forever. The
father knows his time is now focused on his son. There is a reversal of roles, as the child gets bigger
and stronger, the father gets weaker and will die. "Sweet death, small son, our instrument/of
immortality." Another problem was that the parents had their child young. That day the child was
born, their lives were changed and it will never be the same again. "We twenty–five and twenty–
two." In conclusion, Donald Hall portrays a father who has grown old, holding their young child in
their arms. . The way Hall used imagery, showed the reader a fatherly figure that gives up
everything to care for his son. The tone of the poem was important because it let the reader know
that the poem could be seen as happy or dark. The theme showed the readers that once they have a

Death Of A Salesman Father Son Relationship Essay
Depression. Trust issues. Relationship issues. A higher chance to become criminals. These are all
possible effects that a poor parent–child relationship has on the child. The main character of Death

England, but lives in New York. In his childhood, his father was absent and so he is attempting to
provide his sons with a father. He is trying to create the best life for his sons, but still cannot do so,
even in their thirties. In the play, the condition of Happy's desire for attention, Biff's discovery of his

selfishness lead to him being a failure of a father to his sons, which ultimately leads to the failure of

Father And Son In Henry IV, Part 1
Fathers and sons To me the relationship of a father and son is a deep bond that two beings can have.
From a young child's point of view, his father is his main male role model. As a result, many
children when young may want to be like their fathers when they grow up. Although this may
change as children grow up and are introduced to new ideas and try to figure out who they are, this
is where the father is either understanding of his son's choices or against them. As young adults, we
don't like to be told what to do or be criticized for our choices, so if we find solace in someone else
who understands us and does not judge us, we view that person more highly almost fatherly, but
though you view that person highly you know that he cannot take the place of your blood father. In
the play Henry IV, Part 1 we are introduced to King Henry, who is Hal's father and the new monarch
of Great Britain. Henry became the new monarch by overthrowing King Richard. I can only imagine
the amount of pressure he most have trying to prove that he is a worthy king since he did not obtain
the throne through bloodline. In Act 1, scene 1, Henry is talking to Westmoreland about Prince Hal.
From the first line Henry sets this tone of disappointment when speaking of his son Hal. "Yea, there
thou mak'st me sad, and mak'st me sin. In envy that lord Northumberland should be the father to so
blessed a son." Henry is not proud to have Hal as his son. Henry is so ashamed that he begins to

Father Son Relationship In Night By Elie Wiesel
"Luke, I am Your Father" The relationship between fathers and their sons is an unbreakable bond.
Every man who finds out his spouse is having a baby, wishes for a son. All throughout history, sons
carried on the family name and honor, and parts of that honor system still remain today. This
unspoken bond between father and son leads to many other aspects of the relationship. A son feels a
responsibility to care for his father when he is ailing, because the father does the same for him.
These themes resound in Elie Wiesel's novel Night which was written about Wiesel's experiences in
Nazi concentration camps. This novel revolves around the father/son relationship in which Eliezer
experiences first–hand and witnesses from afar.

Eliezer was horrified by the thought, let alone to witness it with his own eyes. Eliezer fought with
tooth and nail to be able to keep his father close and alive. Other men just abandoned their fathers as
if they were merely a burden. After long hours of running and marching towards a different
concentration camp, the prisoners were finally able to take a break. Several prisoners died that night
from exhaustion. When it was time to leave, Eliezer describes the scene by saying, "The dead
remained in the yard, under the snow without even a marker, like fallen guards....Sons abandoned
the remains of their fathers without a tear,"(Pg 92). Elie was horrified by this sight and was thankful
that his father was still alive. The only reason neither Elie or his father passed away that night was
because they watched out for one another to make sure they did not pass away. That is an incredible
bond. Elie was always watching out for his father, and vice versa; however, others sons wished for
their fathers' deaths, as to relieve a dead weight.
Some sons abused their fathers in order to show their personal strength. When everyone was being
transferred to another concentration camp, the men were not given food. When the train passed by a
certain German city, the onlookers threw bread into the train cars. A piece of bread was thrown into
Elie's car and it was chaos. There was a certain old

Rhetorism In Sons And Lovers
According to Paul de Man, every text presents a language problem that underlies and determines the
interpretation of that text. This is a problem of whether the text should be taken literally or
figuratively (rhetority or figurality) and also because all poems/texts have multiplicity of meanings,
value and appeal. In order to resolve this language problem, there is the need to create a context
which will help in the interpretation of the text. Thus, the linguistic texture of the text involve, all
the works of the author or writer in question, the genre of the text as well the biography of the writer
can be considered as a means of interpreting the text. In this deconstructive interpretation of D.H.
Lawrence's "Sons and Lovers", a biographical context has been created in an attempt to analyse the

Perseverance In Mother To Son By Langston Hughes
Perseverance can play a huge role in a person's life. Through difficult times, having perseverance
can help anybody overcome their obstacles. When dealing with incredibly low income, perseverance
is a helpful tool to have in a person's toolbox of life. In Langston Hughes poem' "Mother to Son" the
mother is advising her son about the hardships in life with the usage of imagery, metaphors and
encouragement. The mother uses her life experiences to teach her son what she had to go through.
During her years before her son was born, the mother gives examples of different scenarios she has
been through. By giving the image of a broken house, she explains how "[i]ts had tacks in it, and
splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor" (Hughes 1). The mother is
telling her son about her upbringing and the different difficulties she endured , hinting signs of
possible poverty. The mother later uses light as another to interpret imagery in her conversation. The
son is told about the downfall of poverty in her home "[a]nd sometimes goin' in the dark [w]here
there ain't been no light" (Hughes 1). There have been times where the mother had to live with the
lights being off and having to live in the dark. With such a rough past, the mother definitely has
many examples to give to her son. Poverty is a huge issue many of people in the world have to deal
with. Anybody can see or imagine seeing someone who is poor, but do not know exactly how
devastating it can be.

Death Of A Salesman Father Son Relationship Essay
The relationship sons have with their fathers is of tremendous importance as a boy grows into

from birth all the way into their adult life. In Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman, Willy
Loman's relationship with his sons, Biff and Happy Loman show the conflicts that stem from Willy's
parenting style and his outlook on life as a whole, which in turn shows the impact a sons
relationship with his father can have on ones life. Willy Loman values that he has bestowed on his
children have completely affected their lives in an extremely detrimental way. Since the boys were
young Willy has always brought up the importance of being "[not] liked but well liked"(20). He
raised Biff and Happy to believe that as long as you are 'well known and well liked' that success will

takes place in Northern Ireland where we meet a father and his son and get a glimpse into their life.
The narrator alternates between father and son and is mostly conversations and thoughts.
The story is basically based on the relationship between the son and the father and you do not get
much told from the past. However there is told, that the son has been in London, which is clear
because the father says he has not heard from his son for two years, and talks about reading about

They used to be close to talk, laugh and do a lot of things together among them, go fishing. Now the

Examples Of Father Son Relationship In The Book Night
Mclaughlin #1 The book "Night" shows that father son relationship means that you would give your
own life for someone, but it also shows how it can be twisted that you would kill a member of your
family for as much as a piece of bread. In the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel the author uses many
scenarios of father son relationship such as , when Elie tough his father to march at one of the
concentration camps. Another example of father son relationships is when Elie saved his dad from
being thrown out of a train. If he hadn't done that his dad would be thrown into a pile of dead people
when he was still alive. Lastly an example of father son relationships is when a child killed his

Parable Of The Prodigal Son Thesis Statement

  • 1. Parable Of The Prodigal Son Thesis Statement INTRODUCTION My thesis statement is about how the Parable of the Prodigal Son can be used to understand the mercy of God. I will show the reader the different ways we can understand the mercy of God in the Parable of the Prodigal Son through the following sections that describe the process of mercy as a conversion, from who are the main characters in the parable within the gospel of Luke to how that mercy is destroyed by the different actions of the human being. The (1) first section is about who are the human beings in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, their principal role and actions in the story followed by; (2) section two about the self–awareness of the Prodigal Son, who was truly the prodigal son and what he desired in life; (3) the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Parable of the Prodigal Son is extremely rich in meaning, especially in mercy. Mercy constitutes the center of Christian spirituality and of our life in Christ; it is a very clear and profound representation of the reality of the human being when he does not appreciate the goodness and love of God. The parable of the Prodigal Son presents the moment in which the youngest son moves away from the father in a selfish way, disregarding the goodness of the fatherly love, to begin an uncertain journey that he believes will bring him to fuller and more abundant life, and he departs in search for freedom and happiness. The parable describes, then, a progress; slow at first, but triumphant at the end when he returns, with a broken heart and freely abandoned, to his father's house. The God of Mercy in the parable invites the human being to discover the meaning of life through the experience of the lost son who begins to discover himself as a human being and reveals himself before his ... • 3. Mother to Son and the Coora Flower: a Poetry Analysis Mother to Son and The Coora Flower: A Poetry Analysis In poetry, more so than any other form of literature, understanding sound, meaning and theme are key to understanding the work itself. In the case of the poems "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes and "The Coora Flower" by Gwendolyn Brooks these elements, when heavily focused upon, allow the reader to discover the message that these writers were attempting to convey. Thought both writers use these elements to their fullest to communicate their respective messages, the method and messages vary greatly. In the poem Mother to Son, Hughes tells the tale of a mother speaking to her son about life and the hardships that one must face to make it in the world. Hughes uses extended metaphor to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brooks also relies heavily on nuances within the structure and language to establish the message. The stanzas that contain information about school are longer and articulate. The lines flow and are inviting. When the lines about reality are read they are short, cold and very deliberate; they give a sense of rigidity. The language is very direct and in some case demanding "I must...". All stanzas about what's "real" are two lines long while the ones that focus on school are four lines long. The statements toward school came off as being very cynical to me. "It was restful, learning nothing necessary... At least you can sleep", the use of "at least" in these lines and the line that follows are what created the cynicism for me. It seemed as if she didn't respect what went on in school because it wasn't the harshness of her everyday life. Capitalization is something that caught my attention. The word "Real" always has the first letter capitalized, which to me established a mood of seriousness within the statements that contained it. I feel this is true the second use of "Coming Home" and "Man" in line fourteen. The capitalization on these words was carefully chosen to continue facilitating the theme and meaning. There is one line in this poem that caught my attention and required me to reread repeatedly to get what she truly meant that line is "which is not free from grief". At first I thought it was just in reference to the previous line ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reading the book Nobody's son, I found a quote that caught my eye, at first it seems complicated to understand but when I reread it, it made sense. "Home isn't just a place, I have learned. It is also a language" –Luis Alberto Urrea. It is a powerful quote and it imparts a great meaning. This quote is in the first section of the book. Urrea is talking about an interview he had in México City. In the firsts years of his life, Urrea did not know what a home was until Mama Chayo took care of him. Was there when he feel like home, because in that place Urrea received the love and care that his parents could not give to him. Where is home? What is home? It is incredible how a quote can change the way we think. I had not thought before what a home is, until I read this quote. What a home is? Literally thinking a home is a building, dorm or apartment where we reside, and we share with our family, relatives or friends. A place where you spend most of your days and nights. These does ... When some of us think about home, we think of problems, homework, housework, bills, and responsibilities. We never look beyond of all of that and see the importance of a home. Maybe we need to stop and reflect what would you do without your home? That was how Urrea feel when he haven't had a place that he could call home. In the other hand, we use to call home to our native land, for example I consider Mexico as my home. But Urrea born in the border between Mexico and the United States, when he was five he moved to the United States. At that age what was home for him? In Death of a Salesman, Willy's relationship with his son's allows the author, Arthur Miller, to reveal the conflicts that can result in a father son relationship. Willy's relationship with his older son, Biff differs in conflict from his relationship with his younger son, Happy. Both relationships have their flaws and both relationships have suffered from Willy's inability to teach his son's positive values. Happy, the younger of the two sons, has taken on many of his father's traits. Although he has a rather successful job, he feels the need to embellish the truth of his success just as Willy has done in the past. (quote). Happy has also taken on his father's trait ... • 9. Relationship Between Fathers and Sons Essay Both poems "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke and "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden are poems in which the speaker (a son in both cases) attempts to explain his complex relationship with his father. It seems that the two poets are reflecting back in their early lives as young boys and showing different appreciation toward their father. In my interpretation "My Papa's Waltz" is about a boy and that is excited that his father got home to play with him. Only problem is the speakers father is drunk and it hard to enjoy himself but he held on because the unconditional love he has for him, as the line says "The Whiskey on your breath / could make a boy dizzy; / But I hung like death: " (1–2–3). However, "Those Winter Sundays" is more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also is a sign of being responsible and not indolent. The impression that I get from "My Papa's Waltz" is that the boy's father is an alcoholic and irresponsible. I say this because as the father and the boy were playing around in the kitchen The unconscious father could of drop a hot pan that the mother could have been cooking on and cause serious damage. That to me shows that the father don't really think about the possibilities. On the contrary "Those Winter Sundays" "Sundays too my father got up early" (1) shows that the father is a hard workingman, that everyday of the week he is up early "with cracked hands that ached / from labor in the weekday weather made" (3–4). The speaker's father is a man that did hard labor to keep heat in the house and also made sure his son was looking sharp for example, "polished my good shoes as well" (12). Overall he was very responsible and loving even though the speaker didn't think so at the time seeing that he didn't show appreciation and "no one ever thanked him" (5). When it comes to the mood the speakers portray different attitudes towards their fathers. In "My Papa's Waltz the speakers mood is positive while the poet reflect back negatively and in "Those Winter Sundays" the speaker attitude is like whatever and negative while the poet also reflect back an realizes that his father was a ... • 11. Living The Split Of Sons And Daughters Living the Split Sons and daughters; the differences between them is more than just a physical apperance. They are treated differently, not only by society, but also in their own household. While parents may not realize it, they treat their sons and daughters different whether it be late night curfews, work ethic or a difference in atmosphere. One of the clearest differences is curfew. Parents often restrict a daughter 's freedoms, one being restricting the possibility of being out late due to fear of danger. The probability of a woman being harassed driving back from a friend's house or at a concert surrounded by people is highly unlikely, yet, they are still told that they have to be home and are unable to experience events like a male would. Males are seen as being stronger and not in danger of others whereas women are fragile and easy victims. Why is this? The answer has its roots in early childhood development. Boys, as a child and young adult, are taught, by their parents, to treat the girls gently and be rough with other boys. Girls are taught to be sweet, respectable and, as said before, gentle. Because of the lack of aggression girls experience as a child, they are seen to be "more fragile" and in turn, are more likely to be put in a dangerous situation with little to no self– defense. So, because parents teach their kids different traits of gender as a child, it carries on into early adulthood making the parent believe what they have implemented into ... (Tobin 1) Father and Son relationships are a crucial part of a person's life and it shapes who the person will become; however, it is in the most strenuous circumstances that, in order to survive, a strong father–son relationship is vital. In Hamlet, a play by William Shakespeare and in the novel Night, by Elie Wiesel, Hamlet and Elie are pushed in different ways in trying to help their fathers.Night by Elie Wiesel and Hamlet by William Shakespeare emphasizes how necessary a father–son relationship is in a boy's life. When a boy has a father present in his life he is able to look up to his father. Since he has a role model he is able to know what to do and what not to do in certain situations. Sons who have been nurtured by their fathers are able to stay strong in troubling situations, and are able to help their father out. "Everything I do in this house is to keep my father well. At the same time, I quail before the idea that he could rebound into solid physical health. What keeps me sane is that his body's decline has matched his mind's. My hope is to stay with him until he dies, right here in his house" (Thorndike 170). In John Thorndike's book The Last of his Mind: A year in the Shadow of Alzheimer's John is taking care of his father for a year he will not leave his father's. John has a very strong relationship with his father. This relates to Night because Elie is starting to take care of his father when he is getting older and John has starting taking care of his father and growing closer to him in this time of wondering. There is a physical closeness, not just a emotional parent– child connection. There is a respect between the son and the father that is more like a man to man relationship instead of a man to boy relationship. The father–daughter relationship in Last of the Mohicans is somewhat stereotypical. The father is the protector, the provider, the authority figure. The daughter is the dependent one, feeling the need for the father to be there, to care for them. The daughter role is not one of independence. • 17. Father Son Relationships In Things Fall Apart "Every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice." This quote by Charles F Kettering embodies what a father son relationship really is. A father is someone a son looks up to, whether in a good or bad light depends on the situation. Father son relationships can take two paths, one where the son does everything the father hates and the others were the son does everything the father does. Fathers play a major role in their son's life with examples of the relationship found throughout the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in the characters of Okonkwo, Nwoye and Unoka. For better or worse Unoka played a major role in Okonkwo's life. "It was fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father." (Achebe 13). Throughout the entirety of Okonkwo's life, his relationship with his father would affect his decisions which were always based on the question, "Would my father do this?", and if he would he would do the opposite. Okonkwo viewed his father as a failure and did not want to even be seen as being related to him. Okonkwo got this impression at a young age, "Even as a young boy he resented his father's failure and weaknesses ..." (Achebe 13). The lessons that Okonkwo got from ... These teaching did not go over well for Nwoye however, "Nwoye was only twelve years old but was already causing his father great anxiety for his incipient laziness." (Achebe 13) Okonkwo's constant shows of how a man should be really had the opposite effect on Nwoye. Nwoye developed into a boy that resembled his father in the way he acted, and that bothered Okonkwo. A Father Talking To His Son Thesis Statement Thesis Statement: If this story had been a father talking to his son it would have been a different conversion, because the father would have explained that men are the sole providers for the family and to be family oriented. The father would have told his son that men was the head of the household and that it was the man's responsibility to provide all the needs for his family. This concept of the man providing for the family began back in the caveman days when the male would go out and gather firewood and invented the tools needed in order to kill wild animals for food. • 21. Summary Of Mother To Son By Langston Hughes Stevie Wonder, whom was an American musician, once said, "Mama was a great teacher, a teacher of compassion, love, and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love." This quote by Stevie Wonder helps us understand the fact that mothers try, in the best ways, to see you succeed by teaching from the mother's perspective and the experiences she has been through to get you to see the world in a different way. Just like the quote, in 'Mother to Son' we also see the emphasis on the teachings or life lessons of a mother and how the mother tries to make the son understand by teaching him that success is something you have to work for, just like the mother had to and still has to do in her life. In Langston Hughes' 'Mother to Son' the poem portrays a mother who informs her son about the life she has lived along with the difficulties that she encountered and has overcame, hence the fact that she is telling her son. The mother explains to her son that despite the difficulties and challenges that come to you and are ahead of you in life, you must not give up because motivation and determination will push you through life, which is what becomes the overall theme of this poem. Langston Hughes' first method to clearly display the theme of perseverance is through the use of an extended metaphor within the whole poem. The constantly acknowledged metaphor throughout this poem is the comparison of the mother's life to a set of crystal stairs. In the poem the mother says "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair," this metaphor is to portray that the mother's life hasn't been easy going and beautiful like a set of crystal stairs would be. Furthermore, it helps us get a clear image that the mother's life has been filled with ups and downs. The mother is portrayed to have had a rough life, but as the reader continues to read the poem we see that she pushes through these hard times and does not give up to prove that determination will get you far; which we see when she says "For I'se still goin', honey, I'se still climbin'" which is the continuation of her prospering. Furthermore, Langston Hughes incorporated imagery and diction into this poem to get his audience to visualize the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The mother talks about the stairs using it as a metaphor for life. She outlines life not being easy by telling her son that the stairs she ascended on was not perfect. When Langston wrote this essay, life was difficult particular for people of color. The mother tells the son that he will have numerous obstacles in life by saying the stairs had various challenges to get pass. Of course, the mother in the poem tries to encourage her son to keep moving in life. The way the poem opens, it looks like the son was feeling discouraged and asked for her advice. The Sun And My Son The Fanatic In "Men in the Sun" and "My Son the Fanatic", both authors discuss the way in which a nostalgic relation to the past and the loss of one's sense of self, as a result of being uprooted or displaced, lead to unsuccessful or poor assimilation to new communities. Ghassan Kanafani employs frequent flashbacks and shifts of narrative perspectives as formal mechanisms to reflect that people who either cling to or are troubled by their past always have great difficulty adjusting to a new way of life. Hanif Kureshi uses an extreme example with the reversal of roles played by father and son in an immigrant family. He argues that even when immigrants try to escape their past and start a new life, such attempts are often futile because of failure to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Abu Qais was seeking help from Ustaz Selim in his own imagination he asks, "would you have been willing to carry all your years on your shoulder and flee across the desert to Kuwait to find a crust of bread"? Since Ustaz Selim cannot possibly reply, this question actually demands Abu Qais' own answer. Abu Qais certainly regards his yearning for old life as a responsibility that he feels obliged to maintain, to carry on his shoulder. He also thinks that fleeing to Kuwait is a gesture of betrayal from his past. And the sense of betrayal grows even more formidable as he realizes that the best outcome of his sacrifice is "a crust of bread", which is barely an acceptable standard of living. Ruminating in the past makes it impossible for Abu Qais to construct a new identity and ultimately draws him to his old identity. When Abu Qais discusses with his wife, he says "(We'll be able to) buy one or two olive shoots... build a shack somewhere... if I arrive". At this time, Abu Qais realizes that moving forward is the only way to achieves his dream of returning to his shack and olive trees in his village. What's more, Ghassan utilizes flashbacks not only to give the reader the backgrounds of the three main characters, but also to provide evidence for what traps them and motivates them to move forward. Among all of them, Abu Qais is the oldest character who clings to his past the most. It is clear how his obsessions to his past lead to his decision to move forward. ... Learning team work Boys do activities together in the Scouts, and much of the time success depends upon working as a team. Preteen and teenage boys often have difficulty learning to put the success of a group before their own success, but in the Boy Scouts, this is something that your son will learn. • 29. The Prodigal Son ( Luke 15 : 11-32 ) Introduction The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32) is one of the most all–encompassing parables told in the canon of the New Testament. It carries both the simplistic messages about faith in god and forgiveness of sin, making it accessible to those with the most rudimentary understanding of Christianity as a whole. At the same time, it is littered with small nuances that allow for scholars to dig into the deeper meanings and the perfectly blended symbolism inside of text, in which historical, social, and cultural norms are used to emphasize God's gift of faith and those that refuse to accept it. In the parable itself, a man has two sons. The younger asks for half the inheritance to strike out on his own early. The father allows it and the son spends every last cent of his money, leaving him far from home and feeding pigs to make ends meet. He decides to return home to ask to be a servant to his father to survive. Upon returning to his father, he's embraced, kissed, and adorned with robes, a ring, and sandals without question. The prized calf is killed and a feast is held for him. This angers the older brother, who refuses to participate even when the father begs him to. The Inheritance Even in the first line, the parable's various meanings show their true colors. Opening with the phrase "A man who had two sons" has differing scholarly implications. It is possible that one represents the average person in Jewish life while the other would be the religious elite. It could be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another reason is because at Eliahou's son left him towards the end, but Eliezer thought about leaving his father earlier in the book. The difference between them is Eliezer never actually left his son, and prayed to God to give him the strength to never turn into Eliahou's son. He simply didn 't have the freedom that other people had. Or even other First children, for that matter. Burt Hummel was way overprotective. Oh, well. Kurt loved his dad anyway. Which was why he was home–or at least, the home he 's known for the last six years, the White House–for the summer between his sophomore and junior year at Parsons. As Kurt got ready, he thought about his date for tonight. Blaine Anderson. Handsome, high energy, and talented. Do you know how hard it is to fall in love with an entire team of Secret Service agents watching your every move? You 're lucky if you get to kiss. It took forever, but Kurt finally found the perfect outfit. Elegant, but not too formal. Unique, but not too flashy. Black skinny jeans, Doc Martens, a blue button–up and a dark navy blazer. He added a chain bow tie and his signature hippo brooch. Perfect. He made his way to the entrance hall where a staff member told him Blaine had just arrived. Smiling happily, he went out the door to where Blaine was parked in his car, looking shell–shocked. He must have gotten searched. So many precautions. Kurt understood, but honestly, what about Blaine was untrustworthy? He was too innocent–looking. With his gelled black hair, kind hazel eyes, and an almost childlike grin, it 's impossible to think Blaine could be a threat to anybody. Blaine finally looked over to where Kurt was emerging from the house. His look of shock turned to awe. Belatedly, he made to get out of the car, but James, one of the Secret Service agents, had already opened the car door for Kurt. "Thank you, James." • 35. Mother To Son Tone Tone: The Emotion of a Story The poem "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes is the story of a mother speaking of life's hardships to her son. The poem starts off with the protagonist's haunting words about the difficulty of life; however, as the story goes on, her words of despair become words of wisdom to her son on never giving up. Hughes organizes this poem by transitioning the tone from hopelessness to encouragement to convey the raw message that although life can be hard, anyone can reach their goals with effort. The beginning of the story starts off with the speaker's somber words of life's difficulties, thus, setting the mood to a glum start. Addressing her son, the speaker says, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. It's had tacks in it. And splinters..." Her blunt tone makes the story seem much more personal; there is not any sugar coating in her tone which is exactly what would be expected of a mother. By trying not to set false expectations on the easiness of life, Hughes uses a blunt tone from the speaker to let her son know how life really is. By setting off the mood of the story as drab, the later transition of tone will be more effective. The speaker then goes on to talk about "goin' in the dark where there ain't been no light" which again emphasizes on the drab, pessimistic tone of the story. ... Song Of Solomon Father Son Relationship Father and Son's "Helluva Piss" – Similarities and Differences In Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison illustrates the relationship between two Macon Dead's, father and son. Throughout the novel, Macon II and Macon III, better known as Milkman, have bouts of conflict and reconciliation, and with each interaction their similarities and differences are gradually revealed. However, there is one image which reveals truths about both characters without any interaction. Set decades apart, both father and son are set in parallel scenes, urinating in the wilderness, in the open air. Perhaps small and seemingly unimportant, but these actions and images can be unpacked further than face value; subtle details planted by Morrison can be used to reveal both the similar and different character traits of Macon and Milkman. ... But the question can be asked: what's the difference between Macon making his own decision, versus Milkman begging for permission? The father–son relationship is a very important base of learning, for the son, about his environment, and since young Baldwin separated himself from his father, he lost that chance. Although Baldwin did not really get to know his father, he began to look back on his life and realize that his father wanted only the best for him. James Baldwin could remember his father actually was ?grinning with pleasure? after his sermons, as opposed to the continuous look of disgust and hatred that he was used to as he was growing up (79). In order to understand precisely how MacGregor makes his case, it is necessary first to explain his exploration of ideas put forth about father–son relationships in general. • 50. Characterisation Of The Father And Son In Cormac... 4. Discuss how one novel you have studied constructs complex characters to represent complex ideas. The use of characterisation in a text can be used to represent complex ideas. Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel, The Road, follows the journey of a man and son that face several events that challenge their humanity in order to survive the post–apocalyptic America. By studying the characterisation of the father and son in The Road, it is revealed that complex ideas are represented. Readers may find that the existentialist ideas of death and violence being unavoidable, love able to be shown through actions, every decision having both rewards and repercussions and when humans are put in extreme or difficult situations, core values and beliefs may be abandoned, are promoted through the actions and thoughts of the characters. These ideas are developed especially through the four main events in the novel through the use of dark imagery and descriptive language. Death and violence are unavoidable and we must find purpose in life with the acceptance of this fact. Throughout the novel, the father and son are forced to react to several events where this idea is evident and promoted. Although the father is characterised as logical and morally conflicted, he prioritises the boy's safety. This is revealed through some of the main events that occur in the novel, such as when the duo encounter a man struck by lightning and on the verge of death. Willie believed that in raising Biff, he will one day be successful, and ambitious. However, it is a pity that it never turned out that way. In fact, throughout the story, Biff reveals that he is not ambitious. "Hap, the trouble is we weren't brought up to grub for money. I don't know how to do it." The main theme Hall is trying to express is that once a person has a child, their lives are changed forever. In the first line, "My son, my executioner," is saying that once a child comes into the world, in a sense the parent's life is taken away. Yet as morbid as that sounds, the parent's life is made eternal through their child forever. The father knows his time is now focused on his son. There is a reversal of roles, as the child gets bigger and stronger, the father gets weaker and will die. "Sweet death, small son, our instrument/of immortality." Another problem was that the parents had their child young. That day the child was born, their lives were changed and it will never be the same again. "We twenty–five and twenty– two." In conclusion, Donald Hall portrays a father who has grown old, holding their young child in their arms. . • 64. Father And Son In Henry IV, Part 1 Fathers and sons To me the relationship of a father and son is a deep bond that two beings can have. From a young child's point of view, his father is his main male role model. As a result, many children when young may want to be like their fathers when they grow up. Although this may change as children grow up and are introduced to new ideas and try to figure out who they are, this is where the father is either understanding of his son's choices or against them. As young adults, we don't like to be told what to do or be criticized for our choices, so if we find solace in someone else who understands us and does not judge us, we view that person more highly almost fatherly, but though you view that person highly you know that he cannot take the place of your blood father. In the play Henry IV, Part 1 we are introduced to King Henry, who is Hal's father and the new monarch of Great Britain. Henry became the new monarch by overthrowing King Richard. I can only imagine the amount of pressure he most have trying to prove that he is a worthy king since he did not obtain the throne through bloodline. In Act 1, scene 1, Henry is talking to Westmoreland about Prince Hal. From the first line Henry sets this tone of disappointment when speaking of his son Hal. Every man who finds out his spouse is having a baby, wishes for a son. All throughout history, sons carried on the family name and honor, and parts of that honor system still remain today. This unspoken bond between father and son leads to many other aspects of the relationship. A son feels a responsibility to care for his father when he is ailing, because the father does the same for him. Elie was horrified by this sight and was thankful that his father was still alive. The only reason neither Elie or his father passed away that night was because they watched out for one another to make sure they did not pass away. That is an incredible bond. • 68. Rhetorism In Sons And Lovers According to Paul de Man, every text presents a language problem that underlies and determines the interpretation of that text. This is a problem of whether the text should be taken literally or figuratively (rhetority or figurality) and also because all poems/texts have multiplicity of meanings, value and appeal. In order to resolve this language problem, there is the need to create a context which will help in the interpretation of the text. When dealing with incredibly low income, perseverance is a helpful tool to have in a person's toolbox of life. In Langston Hughes poem' "Mother to Son" the mother is advising her son about the hardships in life with the usage of imagery, metaphors and encouragement. The mother uses her life experiences to teach her son what she had to go through. During her years before her son was born, the mother gives examples of different scenarios she has been through. By giving the image of a broken house, she explains how "[i]ts had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor" (Hughes 1). The mother is telling her son about her upbringing and the different difficulties she endured , hinting signs of possible poverty. The mother later uses light as another to interpret imagery in her conversation. The son is told about the downfall of poverty in her home "[a]nd sometimes goin' in the dark [w]here there ain't been no light" (Hughes 1). There have been times where the mother had to live with the lights being off and having to live in the dark. With such a rough past, the mother definitely has many examples to give to her son.
