- I worked as the development intern at Synergy School in San Francisco. It is a 39 year old K-8 progressive school with 190 students. \n

- Tuition does not cover the expenses of any independent school. Schools depend on philanthropic dollars. Philanthropic dollars make up 5% - 12% of every school’s budget. Annual fund drives raise money every year for operating expenses, including financial aid. Capital campaigns raise money for buildings and equipment. Endowments campaigns rasie money for special set-aside funds that pay for special programs or expenses\n
- Donations come from current parents and grandparents, alumni parents and grandparents, alumni and former faculty. A very small amount of money comes from businesses and foundations. Donors are people, constituents, who have a connection to the school. \n
- The role of the development office is to turn the connection of constituents into dollars! \n
- A successful development program has three main roles, advancement, cultivation and stewardship. Advancement is telling the story of the school to different constituents- current families, alumni families, alumni and others. Cultivating donors through identifying people who have interest and capacity to give. Stewarding donors through thanking them, staying connected and showing them how their dollars are at work. \n
- Synergy uses the database Generations by inResonance. I was introduced to the basics of entering info into the database and printing from the database. I entered contact info on alumni. I entered notes from communication with donors- content of a handwritten thank you note, notes on a donor’s interests. I printed reports, letters and envelopes. I stuffed and licked!! \n
- Development staff have to participate in the school in order to understand and tell the story. You can’t ask for money unless you are a visible and active member of the community. I took pictures at school events including the Thanksgiving dinner for local seniors and caroling at another senior center. I worked with students and parents in holiday gift making. \n
