I chose to work with the United Way of King County this summer.
I chose the United Way of King County because I had volunteered with them when I was in high school. There are several large events to volunteer with the United Way throughout the year including; Hunger Week and the All Star Softball game. Volunteers can also help out at the homeless shelter or volunteer at schools working with kids. This is a large organization that has a wide spread reach and is familiar to the general public. Through this project I was able to volunteer with multiple organizations; The Center for Wooden Boats, The Polish Festival and The SummeRun a run to raise money for ovarian cancer research. I found these opportunities through the United Way website.
-36th Annual Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival to raise money for the Seattle Center for Wooden Boats. I assisted at the toy boat building tent, voting box retrieval, and clean up.-The Polish Festival is an event to celebrate Polish culture and customs. This event was held in the Center House at Seattle Center, where there was traditional dancing, music, food and vendors. While volunteering I handed out schedules and let me know about the event. As an unofficial duty of my volunteering that day, I gave directions, made lunch suggestions and answered questions about other events that were going at Seattle Center. -SummeRun for Ovarian Cancer is a 5k run/walk to help raise money for ovarian cancer research. I was a course monitor at the beginning/end of the course. In this position I set up road block signs, made sure that the runners stayed on course and that no cars enter the course while the race was going on. Having the opportunity to work with each of these organizations allowed me to see how different non-profits operate.
The United Way of King County has several different ways in which to raise money for their organization. Endowment Fund: The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. As a starting point the Gates Foundation raised $140 million to start this fund which helps to offset operating costs, provide facility improvements and provide more support for the staff. Capital Campaigns: The most prominent capital campaign is the Campaign to End Chronic Homelessness. This campaign raises money to provide supportive housing to those who are chronically homeless.$25 million will help to get 1,000 people off the streets. The money raised will help to renovate or build new buildings to continue helping people. Chapter Fundraisers: There are two main fundraisers for the United Way of King County chapter. The first is an All Star Softball game which gathers celebrities and professional athletes to play softball. Sponsors of this event include Microsoft, Children’s Hospital and the Seattle Mariners. This event raised $1.2 million for homeless youth. The second fundraiser for this chapter is called Hunger Action Week. This event hosts activities such as ‘Top Chef and Exec’ to raise money for hunger relief programs in King County. This past March this event brought in over $100,000.With the number of sports teams in Seattle, the United Way of King County does a great job of utilizing the local talent to bring awareness to and raise money for each of their core projects.
The United Way of King County utilizes Facebook and Twitter to help market their organization.Another way that the United Way of King County uses the internet to market themselves is through their chapter blog. This blog lets the public know about upcoming events, recaps of past events and volunteer opportunities that may be coming up. There are several people within the United Way King County Office that are responsible for the marketing. Chris Hynes is the Vice President of Brand Management/Advertising. Hynes is part of the Management team of the permanent staff. Hynes works with the Campaign Leadership team, which is elected on a yearly basis, and this year’s team consists of Matt Griffin, Chair; Dan Brettler, Co-Chair Roundtable; and Jeffrey H. Brotman, Co-Chair, Roundtable. The Campaign Leadership team is a division of the Board of Directors of the United Way of King County. There are no current marketing campaigns in effect outside of the organization’s blog and social media sites. I think that in order to increase the public’s awareness of what the local chapter is doing, they could put out a local TV ad or have an article in a local weekly paper or a large daily newspaper. Another way to gain awareness about the organization is to get people out to talk about the events that are going on and let the public know how they can help while using a more personal touch than social media.
The Alexis De Tocqueville Society is comprised of 350 of the community’s top philanthropic leaders. Members of this group make a minimum donation of $10,000 with a minimum of $5,000 set to go directly to the United Way of King County. Leadership donors are donors who $1,000 or more to the United Way of King County. These donors are able to have the donations taken from their paychecks each pay period. The United Way of King County has done direct mailing campaigns in the past, however with the use of the internet the majority of the mailing campaign donations are now done online. This organization also works with specific companies which have their employees donate time or money to the United Way of King County. In order for the organization to increase their donor giving, they could demonstrate to their donors what the money is going to each year. The organization could also show the donors what they are doing to help the children of the campaigns.. It is one thing to tell people what good they are doing in the world, but it could be more beneficial by showing them. The Unite Way of King County helps get people off of the streets giving them new homes, that would be proof to donors of what they are doing.
Ashley Hulsey is the current Senior Vice President of United Way of King County. Hulsey has been a staff member of the United Way of King County for the past three years beginning her career at the organization as the Vice President of Development then moving up to Senior Vice President in just a short time. Hulsey went to North Carolina Chapel Hill where she obtained her BA in English. After taking a few years off from school Hulsey went back to school to study law and social policy in addition to social work. When all was said and done she finished graduate school with a MSS and MLSP. Hulsey began working in development in 1990 at the Reinvestment Fund as the Director of Resource & Program Development from there she continued to work on boards for the Northwest Development Officers Association. Advice for graduating students looking to work in the non-profit sector, don’t take no for an answer, be persistent and follow your passion. Keep that in mind and you will go far.
