Ways For Nurses For A Family With Chronic Illness
The purpose of this paper is to present ways for nurses to consider when providing care for a family
with chronic illness. Touhy et al., (2012) defines chronic illness as an illness that last more than a
year and continuous medical treatment with limitation to activity of daily living. Chronic illness
such as stroke can present family and individual challenges throughout an individual's life span.
Knowledge about disease pathology and compliance to medical treatment while having family
support are essential for prevention of additional complications and comorbidities. Cancer,
cardiovascular disease, and diabetes are the most common chronic diseases in Canada. According to
the (Canadian Nurses Association [CNA]), each year 163, 000 Canadians die due to cardiovascular
disease, cancer, lung disease, and diabetes while cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of
death, disability, and illness. Therefore, we will discuss the important ways that family nurses utilize
their skills in health promotion, and develop preventative management care plan that are appropriate
for family situations. Joe Nelson, age 65, has been a brick layer for 33 years living as a single man
for most of his life. He was recently admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit with mild stroke. He
was found at his home with paralysis in his left arm and leg. He was rushed to emergency room at
Hotel Dieu–Grace Hospital and received a diagnostic test CT scan, blood test and EKG to learn the
extent of the

Powerpoint Presentation Summary
In choosing to select a topic from Healthy People 2020, the writer met with Sheila Dobbins, FNP
and AIM Administrator for Sutter Care at Home. With the population serviced by Sutter Care at
Home, it was decided that the topic of older adults would benefit the staff. The presentation would
be a PowerPoint presentation followed by a game for interaction with the staff. Ms. Dobbins also
expressed interest in community resources for the staff to be able to provide to their patients and
families. Estimated time for the presentation would be twenty–five minutes including questions and
time for the game. The location would be at Sutter Care at Home conference room located in
Modesto, California on January 3, 2017. The participants would include nurses, physical therapy,
medical social worker, and administrator. Due to improved technology, medical care, and
medications people in the US are living longer. The quality of life needs to be taken into
consideration and education provided to the aging person and families for disease prevention.
Education provided to those aging on preventive measures to prevent chronic disease will reduce the
financial burden on the economy as well as improve the quality of life for the person.

Chronic Disease Management
Next, consider the case for chronic disease management. Up to this point, the focus has been on the
impact of chronic disease, prevalence, expense and need for thorough care transition and
coordination. This all makes the case for a chronic disease management program for long–term
success. Chronic disease management is defined as a systematic, multi–faceted, patient–centered
approach to health care delivery involving members with a specific disease entity, or those who are
at significant risk. It takes an integrated care approach of managing all aspects of the disease,
potential complications and prevention of comorbid conditions (Norris, Glascow & Englegau,
2003). Chronic disease management includes regular screenings, physician office check–up

Chronic Disease Management In The Healthcare System
Chronic disease management (CDM) is a priority in the health care system. When a Health care
facility can operate efficiently, the quality of life for patients with chronic disease will improve. A
chronic disease is a condition that last longer than six months and that requires ongoing care from a
multidisciplinary team. The CDM team needs to motivate the patient, provide therapies, education
of the disease, and help the patient achieve a reasonable quality of life. The community that the
health care facility resides in will benefit from education to help prevent the disease and quality of
life will be improved. In the United States, strokes are the number four killer and the leading cause
of long–term disability. It is estimated that a stroke ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are also problems with narrowing airways and fluid in the chest. Arthritis can damage the
respiratory system. Arthritis can also damage the immune system, which is problematic because the
person is at a higher risk of acquiring an illness. Arthritis has many damaging effects. Education is
important and it can save many lives. Every health care facility needs a CDM team that can establish
a foundation that can support the community. Without the knowledge of chronic diseases, the
community is at a disadvantage. This will also cost more money than we can support, therefore,
cause the down fall of the health care system. The health care system is still in a reconstruction
phase. More money needs to be spent on prevention of chronic diseases and not the treatment.
Spending money on education will be costly; however, it will be less than what we are spending on
direct and indirect cost. Therefore, spend money now to spend less money later. This will improve
the quality of life for the patient and the

Veterinarian Scenarios
During my second full week with Dr. Carpenter, I experienced many different situations. Examples
from this past week are pregnancy checks, PC dart, embryo implantation, blood transfusion, and
upon many others. All of these situations showed me that there depending upon the stage the animal
is at in its life depends upon what is the most likely scenario a veterinarian will have to perform or
examine on the animal. Everything a veterinarian does has such critical importance due to most
human beings being depended upon animals and the byproducts they make after death or during
their lives. That is the reason veterinarians have such strict regulations and can only use certain
medications due to possible affects on humans such as cancer or disease. ... Show more content on

There has been a fair amount of hoof root in a couple of the herds. As I look at the environments and
management styles, the herds that value health over product primarily has fewer problems with hoof
root due to them cleaning out pens religiously and always keeping up on vacations. Another
difference I see is that places that do not overcrowd have healthier cows compared to places that
overcrowd the cows. Another disease that I see is scouring in calves. Farms that decide to keep their
calves inside usually have a higher tendency for scouring due to infection and disease being much
for prompt in the air of inside facilities compared to outside. Dr. Carpenter told me that calves first
56 days of life is the most critical stage of its life. The first 56 days reflects the most heavily of the
cow's first lactation. Dr. Carpenters claim results correlate with herds under his supervision. One
herd we are at almost everyday keeps their calves inside and the calves are regularly sick. While a
different herd keeps their calves outside and seem to have good luck with their calves and are
relatively healthy. The other correlation is during there first lactation. Looking at data between the
two herds during the cows first lactation also agree that the cows in the herd that have calves that are
healthy and kept outside have higher milk production than that

Food Insecurity Essay
Background
Defining the burden of food insecurity in the US
Food insecurity is defined as "the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe
foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways."1 This
is measured on a continuum that divides food security status into four categories: high food security,
marginal food security, low food security and very low food security (see appendix for definitions).2
In 2016, approximately 12% of households in the United States, representing 41.2 million
individuals, experienced some level of food insecurity. Approximately 7% of households
experienced low food security and almost 5% experienced very low food security. In addition to
difficulty obtaining food, those who are food insecure may also lack the resources necessary to meet
their basic material needs. This may ultimately impact their ability to manage their health needs and
drive increased healthcare usage.3
Food security as a determinant of health
Studies have shown food insecurity to be associated with inadequate nutrient intake and several poor
physical and mental health outcomes across the lifespan.4,5,6 There are a number of studies that
have examined the relationship between health status and access to food among adults. Results from
two cross–sectional studies using a nationally representative household survey showed an
association between food insecurity and higher rates of chronic disease, such as

Genetic Disease And The Medical World
Genetics plays a large role in the medical world, specifically when dealing with disease. Some
genetic diseases remain a mystery as to their specific origins, but this only highlights the importance
of continued research and an accurate and complete knowledge of one's family medical history. This
paper will cover one inherited genetic disease for which there is no cure, Fatal Familial Insomnia
("Self management of Fatal Familial Insomnia. Part 1: What is FFI?", 2006, p. 65). This particular
disease was chosen due to its severity, swiftness with which it ends life, and its ability to exist
undetected without symptoms for decades unless one's family history is known. Fatal Familial
Insomnia, (FFI), is a neurodegenerative prion disease classified as a Transmissible Spongiform
Encephalopathy, (TSE), meaning that it is genetically transmitted (Belay, 1999, p. 284). FFI is
autosomal dominant (Xie et al., 2013, p81–90), meaning that an individual with A or AA alleles, a
component of a gene pair, could carry this gene (Ireland, 2013). The capital, "A or AA", denotes a
dominant genetic trait (Ireland, 2013). The carrier will usually only present with one mutated gene
and one normal gene in these cases which would be symbolized as, "Aa", meaning the genotype is
heterozygous, one dominant coded allele and one recessive (Ireland, 2013). Due to this 50–50
presentation of the gene itself, the likelihood of passing an autosomal dominant disorder or gene to
offspring is also 50–50. The

The Medical Management Of Alzheimer 's Disease
Dementia is a syndrome of gradual onset and continuing decline of higher cognitive functioning
(Alderman and Daly, 2005, p.1745). The term dementia is derived from Latin word demens
(meaning without mind). Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a most common form of dementia and a
neurodegenerative disease with more than 25 million cases worldwide. The disease was first
described by Alios Alzheimer a German physician in 1906 and published it in 1907 under the title
"A characteristic serious disease of the cerebral cortex" (Cipriani, Dolciotti, Picchi & Bonuccelli,
2009, p.277). This paper is going to reflect the pathophysiology, incidence, etiology, clinical
manifestations, prognosis and a brief overview of the medical management of Alzheimer's disease.
According to U.S Census Bureau the total number of people with AD is projected to be 13.8 million
by 2050 with 7.0 million people with 85 or older (AACN , 2013, p.17). According to Shampo, Kyle,
Steensma the first known case was a 51 year old female who had progressive memory loss and she
died after 5 years (2013). The implications of pharmacological treatment and physical therapy in a
patient with AD will also be discussed in this paper. Pathophysiology The mechanism of the disease
is largely unknown but the amyloid cascade hypothesis is the basis for the pathophysiology of AD.
According to Armstrong "senile plaques (SPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) have been
regarded as the "signature" pathological lesions of Alzheimer's

Disease Management
Each year, at least 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with diabetes, which makes
this disease one of the nation's most serious health concerns that, if left unchecked, could reach
epidemic proportions. And it doesn't stop there. Often, people who suffer from diabetes also have to
contend with other complications, which not only increase the risk to the patient's health but also
add to the rising cost of health care. This makes it necessary for an effective disease management
program for diabetes to be in place. What Is Disease Management? Disease management is
essentially a coordinated and continuous process of health care with the goal of managing and
improving the health of the patients diagnosed with recurring or long ... Show more content on

The main goal of a disease management program for diabetes is to concentrate on providing a
patient–centered method of health care by extending beyond clinical and medical issues and
including the psychological and social aspects of the disease. After all, diabetes is a disease that
affects more than just the patient – it also affects his family and care providers. Because of its
chronic nature, diabetes also tends to impact patients psychologically, which makes it necessary that
a proper venue and platform for emotional support be made available. Disease management for
diabetes also seeks to provide care using nationally accepted and recognized standards. If a patient
suffers from multiple chronic diseases related to diabetes, disease management can make medical
service coordination easier and more efficient, even if the main focus of the management plan is
only diabetes. By providing the most innovative approaches to diabetes care, a disease management
program can lead to the improvement of health services and approaches. If efficiency is achieved,
health care cost can be reduced by eliminating redundant services and the unnecessary costs
associated with failed or poor

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Antibiotics And Streptococcus...
Some common pathogens that cause HEENT infections are H. influenzae, Streptococcus
pneumoniae, and Staphyloccoccus aureus. All three pathogens can cause conjunctivitis, H. influenza
and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the main two pathogens that lead to acute otitis media (AOM),
and H. influenzae and Staphylcoccus aureus are known to cause sinusitis (Cash & Glass, 2014). I
would recommend a limited use of antibiotics in treatment of these diseases and other unconfirmed
bacterial illness, due the increase chance of antibiotic resistance. Symptom management may be all
that is required, and most children will improve without being prescribed antibiotic therapy.
Watchful waiting for 48–72 may be the best choice to allow the patient to improve without antibiotic
treatment (Cash & Glass, 2014). As providers, getting a whole history of the presenting symptoms
and the duration of the symptoms will lead to better treatment outcomes for the patient.
Antibiotics should only be used in the pediatric population when there is a known presence of a
bacterial infection and the benefits will outweigh the harms of administering the antibiotic (Murray
& Amin, 2014). The practice of prescribing antibiotics when not necessary leads to drug resistance
and adverse reactions, which is a major public health concern in the pediatric population. In the
United States, it is estimated that well over 50 million ineffective and unnecessary antibiotic
prescriptions are written for children each

Chronic Wasting Disease Management Case Study
As stated previously, the accurate and factual information regarding Chronic Wasting Disease is
important to further gain an understanding among the many stakeholders of the degree of risks of
CWD and more so, to gain support for CWD management. The failure to keep Texas Landowners,
hunters and many other groups informed of the CWD with most recent facts could impact how these
individuals see the disease management strategies (CWD Management Plan, 2015).
The approach to tackling this disease has successful has been displayed in many strategies. One
possible attempt that has been established is the Eradication Attempt in which The state of New
York identified CWD in two different captive herds during a routine surveillance that took place ...

Likewise, 1,200 deer were collected within the " Disease Zone"' during 2011 winter as well as 2,300
samples from hunters of deer that had been harvested the following fall and no positive result were
identified of CWD (CWD Management Plan, 2015). Another Solution is the Control Attempt where
states like Wyoming, Colorado, Wisconsin, where CWD has been around for several years, would
not want to consider the Eradication Attempt as a course of action. The Control Attempt is to strictly
focused on reducing the migration of free–ranging or captive deer also from CWD infected areas,
which could greatly reduce the spread. In the Control Attempt, some states have paired up with
hunters to monitor the prevalence, distribution, and managing of deer and elk population to meet the
requirements of the CWD objectives (CWD Management Plan, 2015). A third solution is the
Outreach Attempt, which has been a well developed and educated plan that is perceived as a critical
component of CWD management to help keep Texas Hunters and the general public well informed
of most factual information about CWD. This attempt to increase the awareness and implication of
this disease by networking with natural resource professionals and strongly encouraging them to

this recent Ebola outbreak has seen 10,708 confirmed infections and 6,055 deaths, with the hardest
hit countries being West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia (Centers for Disease

He died on October 8. Two nurses who had directly cared for Duncan at Texas Presbyterian Hospital
had confirmed laboratory diagnoses of EVD on October 10 and October 15. Both have been treated
and have recovered from the virus. One of the nurses, Amber Vinson, flew from Dallas to Cleveland
before her diagnosis after having cleared her travel with a CDC official prior to flying. She was
asymptomatic at the time, but passengers on that flight were monitored for EVD symptoms for 21
days. A fourth case of Ebola in the U.S. was confirmed on October 23 in New York. Medical aid
worker Craig Spencer had returned from Guinea where he worked with the organization Doctors
Without Borders. Spencer self–monitored symptoms and called 911 when he developed a fever. He
has recovered and was discharged from hospital care on November 11. There have been no reported
cases in the U.S. since Spencer (CDC, 2014b).
These four cases not only show that globalization and ease of travel between areas of the outbreak
has made the U.S. population susceptible to Ebola, but it also demonstrates that medical technology,
infection control measures, and the coordinated response helped to prevent a large–scale outbreak.
Hospitals across the country have implemented policies and procedures for evaluation and
management of patients who present to emergency rooms with possible EVD. The CDC has

The Problem Of Tb Infection And Disease Management
MTB has been associated with human disease for thousands of years and this success to great extent
is due to its ability to survive within the host for months or even decades in latent state. In the past
few decades, however, it has also evolved itself into various new forms, especially as multidrug
resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) forms causing several outbreaks. For
outbreak and contact tracing, DNA fingerprinting technology is now an accepted and widely used
method. The population structure of MTB is geographically subdivided, and these genetically
different lineages have adapted to their local human populations, as is evident from molecular
epidemiology. However, scientific evidence for such an adaptation is ... Show more content on

Owing to the special geographical diversities and living conditions, the predominance of different
genotypes might imply their long–standing presence in these regions and may be linked with
exponential contact with other populations.
Mounting evidences suggest that MTB evolved as a human pathogen in Africa and further spread
took place with the first migrations of modern humans out of Africa around 70,000 years ago.
Among many of the early studies of phenotypic and genotypic relevance, the one consistent finding
was that tubercle bacilli from South India were less virulent and more susceptible to oxidative stress
when compared to isolates form Great Britain. South Indian strains were also found to be devoid of
sulpholipids. Even though strains of these earlier studies were not genotyped, on the basis of our
current knowledge of the global phylogeography of MTB, it can be assumed that most of the South
Indian strains belonged to Lineage 1 (Indo–Oceanic)[17]. We found clear demarcation in the
compartmentalization of MTB lineages of this study isolates with respect to their geographical
locations. Clustering can be used in post–genomic data analysis to group strains with similar traits.
Clustering of individual SITs varies from region to region. Although spoligotyping may correctly

Factors Affecting The Medical Decision Making And Disease...
The primary issues presented in this case are related to the cultural as well as the religious factors
affecting the medical decision making as well as disease management. This involves Rivka Cohen,
who is a six–year–old girl diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). Rivka and her family live in a tight
knit Hasidic Jewish community where daily life is built on ancient laws and religious devotion. The
Cohen family have acknowledged that their daughter requires treatment for her medical condition,
but are struggling to find a compromise between their religious and cultural beliefs and the cf
treatment team's recommendations. The Cohen's medical decision making and disease management
is heavy influenced by their cultural and religious beliefs in conjunction with input from their rabbi.
At the present time, the CF treatment team has established a treatment plan, but the Cohens are
having a difficult time adhering to this plan due to several factor that will be discussed.

nephrologists for this indication at a GFR <15mL/min/1.73m2. Critique: strength and weakness The
strengths of this research article is the fact that it proves that the lack of education is there for
internal medicine residents, there has to be lack of this education for NPs. It also proved that the
KDOQI guidelines are unknown among many health care professionals. The option to quickly
complete the survey was strength to this research. A weakness is that there is no data on the non–
respondents. The lack of referral could not be determined if it was from lack of education or the
competence of CKD. The survey was not given to physicians, which could have established a level
of performance. The experience of CKD was not obtained. The survey was also

Health Belief Model Of The American Diabetes Association,...
Theoretical Background
According to the American Diabetes Association, the complications and cost acquired from diabetes
can be dramatically reduce if patients are more aware of the potential risk and receive proper health
prevention education. Diabetes self–management is essential in reducing the complications of
disease. Researchers use several theories to help come up with the best way to provide care to
patients with chronic illness such as diabetes. The major theory for this EBP is the Chronic Care
Model, the author chose this model because of its versatility, it can be apply in any setting and allow
for the improvement of care of both the individual and community level (Coleman, Austin, Brach, &
Wagner, 2009)
Health Belief Model
Jalilian, Motlagh, Solhi, & Gharibnavaz (2014) used the Health Belief Model (HBM) to evaluate
self–management promotion educational program intervention efficiency among diabetic patients.
The HBM theory framework hypothesize that patients and or populations are more likely to engage
in health promoting behaviors if they perceive a threat to their wellbeing (Jalilian, Motlagh, Solhi, &
Gharibnavaz, 2014). Therefore patients with diabetes will adhere to their prescribed medical
treatment if they are well educated about the disease process, understand the serious consequences
that come with non–compliance(Jalilian et al., 2014). The authors used an HBM questionnaire to
assess the different component of the framework: perceived susceptibility,

Managing The Disease : Management
Managing the Disease
Management
From experience with watching my uncle, I know that managing this chronic illness can be difficult.
However, creating a brand new healthy life can benefit the disease in many ways. Massage creates a
healthy alternative for pain management and stress reduction. Most people, like my uncle, hate
taking their medicine because it doesn't solve anything. One day I worked on my uncle's back
because he was complaining about it. I gave him a 30 minute chair massage and only focused on his
back. A week later I followed up with him and he said that his back is totally relieved and that he has
no more back pain. I believe that massage can correct a lot of symptoms to diseases rather than just
being on drugs for the rest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nutrition has a big role in how often someone has an "attack." Massage and eating clean goes hand
in hand because massage helps remove the toxins from our bodies and eating clean promotes the
toxins to come out of our body. Eating healthy enables the body to stay clean (on the inside) and not
"irritate" the disease. Eating fast food, junk food and unhealthy things are not good for the disease.
"Coffee, tobacco, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, fake foods, artificial or fake anything can send MS
into a tizzy" (Craven, 2012). There are foods that benefit MS such as "cooling mung beans and
detoxing apples" (Craven, 2012). There are some anti–inflammatory foods to help with MS. In the
article "8 anti–inflammatory Foods for Multiple Sclerosis," they list some foods that can help with
the disease. The first food is fatty fish like salmon. "Omega–3s help block the body 's inflammatory
response" (Mikel Theobald, 2016). Omega–6 can possibly cause inflammation, which is why
consuming omega–3s are healthier. Ginger is another great food to incorporate into the diet. Ginger
promotes anti–neuroinflammatory, some people place ginger in their salads or tea. Other foods like
avocado, fruits, veggies, and flax seeds are a great anti–inflammatory foods to introduce to your diet
to have better management of MS.
Although foods are an important role in having a healthier life, living a better lifestyle contributes to
MS. Practicing things like meditation,

A Brief Note On Coronary Heart Disease ( Chd )
Introduction
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the obstruction of blood vessels that supply the heart muscle, due
to the deposition of lipid material [1]. Figure 1 illustrates various modifiable and non–modifiable
risk factors, influencing the prevalence of CHD within Australians.
Figure 1: Modifiable and non–modifiable risk factors affecting the prevalence of Coronary Heart
Disease in Australia
[19]
Modifiable Risk Factors Non–Modifiable Risk Factors
Obesity Increasing age
Hyperlipidemia Gender
Excessive alcohol and tobacco use Family history
Psychological stress Heredity
Prevalence of CHD over the past century
As shown in Figure 2 (Page 2), the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) observed a
73% decrease in mortality caused by CHD, between 1968 and 2011 [2]. More specifically, the
decline in the mortality rate occurred in the late 1960s, where these changes were most evidence in
males and females aged 55–64 and 65–74 years respectively [21]. As shown in Figure 3 and 4 (Page
2), the mortality rate in men aged 35–44 and 45–54 years declined at a decreasing rate, in contrast to
older men where the mortality rate had increased [21]. In women however, the rate of overall
decline had only been hindered in the 45–54 age category, as opposed to increasing in older age
groups [21]. Thus, over the past century, mortality rates have generally declined [2]. Although, this
rate of decline is gradually improving in older populations and deteriorating in younger

Diagnosis And Management Of Patients Suffering From...
Abstract
Neurophysiology provides a range of important clinical investigations to that aid in the diagnosis
and management of patients suffering from neurological disease. This experiment investigates the
mechanisms behind two pathologies pertaining to channelopathies and demyelination: epilepsy and
multiple sclerosis. This is done using a patch clamp technique, a laboratory technique in
electrophysiology that allows the study of single or multiple ion channels in cells. Conditions were
simulated using computer software to test the hypothesized mechanism behind epilepsy with
understanding that it was due to an increase in the time constant, which would enable frequent
neuron activations to occur simultaneously. Manipulations of stimulus impulse in refractory periods
had proven this mechanism to be correct. Investigating the basis for multiple sclerosis, it was
hypothesized that the cooling of impulse invasions would improve the demyelinated region of an
axon by decreasing voltage, which was found to be an accurate phenomenon.

The Importance Of Pharmacist Care At The Management Of...
Importance of Pharmacist Care in the Management of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in adults worldwide and it
accounts for approximately one–third of mortality in Canada and in the United States. Elevated
blood pressure (BP) is also another major cause of death worldwide. The reduction of BP is a
cornerstone of the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), there are numerous hypertensive
patients that do not achieve adequate blood pressure control. In the United States in 2009–2010,
there was an estimation of 53% of all hypertensive people and 40% of treated hypertensive people
had uncontrolled BP. The lower rates of blood pressure control have been reported in European
countries. Interventions to improve the management of CVD risk factors are needed because
patients may have difficulties accessing their primary care physicians and health care costs are
rapidly rising, greater use of community–based models of care has been proposed. Pharmacists are
highly accessible health care professionals because of their knowledge of drug therapy and their
computerized medication records, they are well positioned to provide the necessary medication
instructions to patients to improve safe medication use and are in collaboration with primary
physicians to assist in preventive CVD care. There are numerous studies that showed beneficial
interventions of pharmacists in medication use, identification of patients

Genetic disorders: a terrifying thought and a startling reality. Most genetic disorders, such as cancer,
have disastrous connotations, while others, such as albinism, have slightly less harmful effects. The
disorder called distichiasis (pronounced dis–tic–key–i–asis) can be part of the latter. This disease,
apart of chromosome 16, has few symptoms and even fewer treatments. distichiasis, though able to
show up on it's own, is often paired with other genetic disorders that come with harmful
symptoms(Lymphedema–Distichiasis Syndrome), and has been known to show up in dogs as well as
humans(Distichia or Distichiasis in Dogs). Distichiasis is the genetic mutation of the

Disease: Difference Between Infectious And Chronic Disease
Introduction
According to Nesse, why do we get sick? What are the evolutionary implications in how we
understand illness and disease? Human beings are susceptible to a variety of diseases. A disease is a
disorder or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system, of the body resulting from the
effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance,
toxitcity, or unfavorable environmental factors, illness, sickness, ailment. (Dictionary, 2015). A
disease represents a failure, or severe flaw of the body. There are two types of diseases, an infectious
disease and a chronic disease. The difference between the two are that an infectious disease, is a
disorder caused by organisms – such as bacteria, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through this source I was able to obtain an article that discussed Maladaptation and Natural
Selection. This article contained a brief overview by Randolph M. Nesse of a published slim volume
called "Adaptation and Natural Selection: A Critique of Some Current Evolutionary Thought"
written by George Williams. Williams did not use report clever calculations or drawn out field
experiments but rather logically discussed a simple question which was whether or not natural
selection shapes an individual's traits that benefit that species. The next article I found was
"Evolution of Maladaptation," by Bernard J. Crespi where he explains that 'natural selection is not
evolution' and that maladaptation can evolve. The third article "Population Biology, Evolution, and
Infectious Disease: Convergence and Synthesis," speaks about the importance of genetic structure
and understanding the response of pathogens by selective pressure imposed by host immunity both
natural and vaccine induced. This knowledge is important for the effective management of
antimicrobial drugs. The last article that I found is "The role of evolution in the emergence of
infectious diseases." In this article it specifies on how infectious diseases are evolutionizing

child at the time of the session. Age is very important to help identify the current symptoms the
child may be exhibiting and upcoming symptoms. Observed symptoms of Tay–Sachs disease in
infants can be muscle weakness or paralysis, seizures, respiratory distress, loss of hearing or

Tay–Sachs is genetically passed disease from parents that both have the defective gene on
chromosome 15 (HEX–A). This defective gene prevents the body from producing a protein called
hexosaminidase. Without the hexosaminidase protein a chemical called ganglioside will build up in
the nerve cells located in the child's brain. This build up will eventually destroy the brain cells and
eventually lead to death. I would explain that both parents must be carriers of the defective gene for
the disease to occur and be passed onto their child. I would further explain that for them (the
affected child's parents) to be carrying the defective gene one of their parent had to be a carrier
themselves. I would share the Jewish descent from central or eastern Europe as historically being the
geographical origin of the disease. I would explain some of the symptoms associated with the
disease and what to look for as the disease progresses. Observed symptoms of Tay–Sachs disease in
infants that can start at 3 to 6 months of age can be muscle weakness or paralysis, seizures, loss of
hearing or deafness, respiratory distress, exaggerated startle response to sound or light, and a red
spot which is located on the macula in the child's eye. I would recommend to the parents to seek out
a specialist for comforting care. The comforting care would include but not limited to pain

Integration Of A Disease Management Contract
The Problem: Regional Hospital is located in charlotte Mecklenburg North Carolina and serves a
community of an estimated 875,000 members within the integrated delivery system (IDS). Recent
efforts are being spent on reviewing several proposals for integration of a disease management
contract that will assist in reducing utilization costs with the primary goal of improving our patient
health outcomes. Many experts in healthcare economics point out that chronic medical conditions
are directly associated with higher costs (G., 2010). This association is mainly attributed to the high
usage of all types of care (Kongstvedt, 2013). Reports show that the number of people suffering
with chronic conditions is radically rising and forecasts suggest that the number of American's with
one or more chronic conditions will continue to grow by an estimated 37% between 2000 and 2030
(G., 2010). It is in our patient's main interest to shift our current focus from treatment for acute
conditions to target a better utilization of the recorded 78% of health spending devoted to people
with chronic conditions. The new strategic approach is one of developing quality medical care for
people with chronic conditions which require ongoing care and care management to improve their
health status (Kongstvedt, 2013). Analysis: A comprehensive review of our nation's overall
healthcare costs disclose that only 1% of the United States population is consuming 20% of the total
costs, while 10% of the

Creating Two Bad Behavior Of Case And Disease Management...

Autumn –2015
Assignment I
1. Create TWO bad behaviour of Case and Disease Management systems scenarios and explain each
in detail?
The Encyclopaedia of Business, 2nd Edition on the Reference for Business website describes a role
of a management information system as 'a computer system that provides management and other
personnel within an organisation with up–to–date information' (Management Information Systems,
para 4). A bad behaviour scenario is when this system does not meet the intended requirements and
leaves the business less efficient and the customers dissatisfied.
First scenario: A patient suffers from heart disease. Their medical consultation history such as
appointments and follow–up care is taken care of by the case management system and the progress
of their heart disease in managed by the disease management system. The patient moves houses and
thus has a change in address, however this change, due to poor management, has only been recorded
in the disease management system and thus the old address is still active in the case management
system. Confidential health reports are sent to the wrong address due to the incorrect information in
the case management system, unknown to the hospital. This compromises the patient 's medical
privacy and also inconveniences them as they are not receiving their own personal health reports by
mail. Second scenario: A

Biological Understanding Of The Disease And Clinical...
Despite current advances in both biological understanding of the disease and clinical management
through systemic chemotherapy, improvements in survival rates continue to remain scarce, with
only 3% of patients surviving over 5 years (Singh et al., 2015). At the point of diagnosis, only 20%
of patients display localised disease and hence susceptibility to surgical resection and successful
chemotherapeutic intervention (Indolfi et al., 2016). Therefore, for the majority of PDAC patients,
tumours remain asymptomatic until an advanced–disease stage upon metastasis to the liver and
other organs (Singh et al., 2015). The delayed manifestation of overt clinical symptoms, such as
jaundice, pain and weight loss severely constrict treatment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Due to the low prevalence of disease, it is not deemed feasible to carry out population–based
screening for PDAC (Brand et al., 2011). However, the successful implementation of screening
strategies to enrich for individuals who remain high–risk candidates for development of PDAC, such
as patients of new–onset diabetes mellitus and chronic pancreatitis, provides distinct opportunities
for early disease detection (Kang et al., 2016; Hwang et al., 2015; Zhang et al., 2014). This may in
turn improve the number of asymptomatic PDAC cases detected at a stage where curative therapy
remains viable (Kang et al., 2016).
Serum Biomarkers
The potential role of serum biomarkers in the early detection of PDAC provides promise for the
screening of high–risk groups and presents an increasingly stratified approach to disease treatment
(Costello et al., 2012). However, detection of PDAC at its curable stage remains highly difficult as
early–warning signs are often non–specific (Radon et al., 2015; Tonack et al., 2013). PDAC must
also be differentiated from other benign and inflammatory conditions of the pancreas, that often
yield similarity in clinical presentation (Zhang et al., 2014; Tonack et al., 2013). Such conditions
include chronic pancreatitis and benign biliary obstruction. Furthermore, around 75% of PDAC
patients have tumours

Disease Classification Structures
Disease Classification Structures
Health care information systems cover a wide range of issues dealing with the supervision and use
of biomedical information. Health information systems are central support tools in the
administration of health care services. An acceptable health information system is important not
only for evaluating the health needs of populations but also for preparation and for application of
health interventions. It is equally imperative in the assessment of programs. The goal of information
systems is to create an appropriate working environment. This is done by providing initial and going
training, allocating resources, and by managing unintended consequences (Wager, Lee & Glaser,
2009).

Death certificates are also pulled to determine the cause of death and monitor diseases that could
change and affect more populations. The data is pulled to analyze epidemiology and provide control
of diseases across the world.
Any negative aspects of your selection
Every system in healthcare has its positive and negative traits. Though there are few disadvantages
to the classification of diseases, understanding them is of importance. New diseases are being found
yearly to even monthly, and every several years the classification of diseases needs to be updated,
which can cause changes to the past and current classification. Once the system has been changed,
and it is important that there is proper communication of the change so this classification of system
remains understandable and useful. Categories for past census may be different from past categories,
so these changes will also make it hard to compare past and current census.
Conclusion
Disease classification information structures are very important for the health care community. The
ICD is used to monitor health care disease and categorize the disease in a format that is universal to
all health care organizations. The ICD has provided a system to assist in the reimbursement process
for health care organizations. The ICD is also important to monitor diseases and prevent the spread
of infection. The ICD information structure has provided a standard that

The discovery of the absence or presence of a disease impacts the lives of patients. As a patient

CLS do not personally interact with patients, but they perform tests to diagnose the disease and
provide the vital data of the disease, which helps physicians determine the best treatment for the
patient. Without CLS diseases can be misdiagnosed, especially when they are based on symptoms.
Many diseases share the same symptoms. As a result, diseases may be misdiagnosed and the

Ways For Nurses For A Family With Chronic Illness

 • 1. Ways For Nurses For A Family With Chronic Illness The purpose of this paper is to present ways for nurses to consider when providing care for a family with chronic illness. Touhy et al., (2012) defines chronic illness as an illness that last more than a year and continuous medical treatment with limitation to activity of daily living. Chronic illness such as stroke can present family and individual challenges throughout an individual's life span. Knowledge about disease pathology and compliance to medical treatment while having family support are essential for prevention of additional complications and comorbidities. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes are the most common chronic diseases in Canada. According to the (Canadian Nurses Association [CNA]), each year 163, 000 Canadians die due to cardiovascular disease, cancer, lung disease, and diabetes while cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death, disability, and illness. Therefore, we will discuss the important ways that family nurses utilize their skills in health promotion, and develop preventative management care plan that are appropriate for family situations. Joe Nelson, age 65, has been a brick layer for 33 years living as a single man for most of his life. He was recently admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit with mild stroke. He was found at his home with paralysis in his left arm and leg. He was rushed to emergency room at Hotel Dieu–Grace Hospital and received a diagnostic test CT scan, blood test and EKG to learn the extent of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 3. Powerpoint Presentation Summary In choosing to select a topic from Healthy People 2020, the writer met with Sheila Dobbins, FNP and AIM Administrator for Sutter Care at Home. With the population serviced by Sutter Care at Home, it was decided that the topic of older adults would benefit the staff. The presentation would be a PowerPoint presentation followed by a game for interaction with the staff. Ms. Dobbins also expressed interest in community resources for the staff to be able to provide to their patients and families. Estimated time for the presentation would be twenty–five minutes including questions and time for the game. The location would be at Sutter Care at Home conference room located in Modesto, California on January 3, 2017. The participants would include nurses, physical therapy, medical social worker, and administrator. Due to improved technology, medical care, and medications people in the US are living longer. The quality of life needs to be taken into consideration and education provided to the aging person and families for disease prevention. Education provided to those aging on preventive measures to prevent chronic disease will reduce the financial burden on the economy as well as improve the quality of life for the person. • 5. Chronic Disease Management Next, consider the case for chronic disease management. Up to this point, the focus has been on the impact of chronic disease, prevalence, expense and need for thorough care transition and coordination. This all makes the case for a chronic disease management program for long–term success. Chronic disease management is defined as a systematic, multi–faceted, patient–centered approach to health care delivery involving members with a specific disease entity, or those who are at significant risk. It takes an integrated care approach of managing all aspects of the disease, potential complications and prevention of comorbid conditions (Norris, Glascow & Englegau, 2003). Chronic disease management includes regular screenings, physician office check–up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 7. Chronic Disease Management In The Healthcare System Chronic disease management (CDM) is a priority in the health care system. When a Health care facility can operate efficiently, the quality of life for patients with chronic disease will improve. A chronic disease is a condition that last longer than six months and that requires ongoing care from a multidisciplinary team. The CDM team needs to motivate the patient, provide therapies, education of the disease, and help the patient achieve a reasonable quality of life. The community that the health care facility resides in will benefit from education to help prevent the disease and quality of life will be improved. In the United States, strokes are the number four killer and the leading cause of long–term disability. It is estimated that a stroke ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are also problems with narrowing airways and fluid in the chest. Arthritis can damage the respiratory system. Arthritis can also damage the immune system, which is problematic because the person is at a higher risk of acquiring an illness. Arthritis has many damaging effects. Education is important and it can save many lives. Every health care facility needs a CDM team that can establish a foundation that can support the community. Without the knowledge of chronic diseases, the community is at a disadvantage. This will also cost more money than we can support, therefore, cause the down fall of the health care system. The health care system is still in a reconstruction phase. More money needs to be spent on prevention of chronic diseases and not the treatment. Spending money on education will be costly; however, it will be less than what we are spending on direct and indirect cost. Therefore, spend money now to spend less money later. This will improve the quality of life for the patient and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 9. Veterinarian Scenarios During my second full week with Dr. Carpenter, I experienced many different situations. Examples from this past week are pregnancy checks, PC dart, embryo implantation, blood transfusion, and upon many others. All of these situations showed me that there depending upon the stage the animal is at in its life depends upon what is the most likely scenario a veterinarian will have to perform or examine on the animal. Everything a veterinarian does has such critical importance due to most human beings being depended upon animals and the byproducts they make after death or during their lives. That is the reason veterinarians have such strict regulations and can only use certain medications due to possible affects on humans such as cancer or disease. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There has been a fair amount of hoof root in a couple of the herds. As I look at the environments and management styles, the herds that value health over product primarily has fewer problems with hoof root due to them cleaning out pens religiously and always keeping up on vacations. Another difference I see is that places that do not overcrowd have healthier cows compared to places that overcrowd the cows. Another disease that I see is scouring in calves. Farms that decide to keep their calves inside usually have a higher tendency for scouring due to infection and disease being much for prompt in the air of inside facilities compared to outside. Dr. Carpenter told me that calves first 56 days of life is the most critical stage of its life. The first 56 days reflects the most heavily of the cow's first lactation. Dr. Carpenters claim results correlate with herds under his supervision. One herd we are at almost everyday keeps their calves inside and the calves are regularly sick. While a different herd keeps their calves outside and seem to have good luck with their calves and are relatively healthy. The other correlation is during there first lactation. Looking at data between the two herds during the cows first lactation also agree that the cows in the herd that have calves that are healthy and kept outside have higher milk production than that ... • 11. Food Insecurity Essay Background Defining the burden of food insecurity in the US Food insecurity is defined as "the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways."1 This is measured on a continuum that divides food security status into four categories: high food security, marginal food security, low food security and very low food security (see appendix for definitions).2 In 2016, approximately 12% of households in the United States, representing 41.2 million individuals, experienced some level of food insecurity. Approximately 7% of households experienced low food security and almost 5% experienced very low food security. In addition to difficulty obtaining food, those who are food insecure may also lack the resources necessary to meet their basic material needs. This may ultimately impact their ability to manage their health needs and drive increased healthcare usage.3 Food security as a determinant of health Studies have shown food insecurity to be associated with inadequate nutrient intake and several poor physical and mental health outcomes across the lifespan.4,5,6 There are a number of studies that have examined the relationship between health status and access to food among adults. Results from two cross–sectional studies using a nationally representative household survey showed an association between food insecurity and higher rates of chronic disease, such as ... • 13. Genetic Disease And The Medical World Genetics plays a large role in the medical world, specifically when dealing with disease. Some genetic diseases remain a mystery as to their specific origins, but this only highlights the importance of continued research and an accurate and complete knowledge of one's family medical history. This paper will cover one inherited genetic disease for which there is no cure, Fatal Familial Insomnia ("Self management of Fatal Familial Insomnia. Part 1: What is FFI?", 2006, p. 65). This particular disease was chosen due to its severity, swiftness with which it ends life, and its ability to exist undetected without symptoms for decades unless one's family history is known. Fatal Familial Insomnia, (FFI), is a neurodegenerative prion disease classified as a Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy, (TSE), meaning that it is genetically transmitted (Belay, 1999, p. 284). FFI is autosomal dominant (Xie et al., 2013, p81–90), meaning that an individual with A or AA alleles, a component of a gene pair, could carry this gene (Ireland, 2013). The capital, "A or AA", denotes a dominant genetic trait (Ireland, 2013). The carrier will usually only present with one mutated gene and one normal gene in these cases which would be symbolized as, "Aa", meaning the genotype is heterozygous, one dominant coded allele and one recessive (Ireland, 2013). Due to this 50–50 presentation of the gene itself, the likelihood of passing an autosomal dominant disorder or gene to offspring is also 50–50. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 17. The Medical Management Of Alzheimer 's Disease Dementia is a syndrome of gradual onset and continuing decline of higher cognitive functioning (Alderman and Daly, 2005, p.1745). The term dementia is derived from Latin word demens (meaning without mind). Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a most common form of dementia and a neurodegenerative disease with more than 25 million cases worldwide. The disease was first described by Alios Alzheimer a German physician in 1906 and published it in 1907 under the title "A characteristic serious disease of the cerebral cortex" (Cipriani, Dolciotti, Picchi & Bonuccelli, 2009, p.277). This paper is going to reflect the pathophysiology, incidence, etiology, clinical manifestations, prognosis and a brief overview of the medical management of Alzheimer's disease. According to U.S Census Bureau the total number of people with AD is projected to be 13.8 million by 2050 with 7.0 million people with 85 or older (AACN , 2013, p.17). According to Shampo, Kyle, Steensma the first known case was a 51 year old female who had progressive memory loss and she died after 5 years (2013). The implications of pharmacological treatment and physical therapy in a patient with AD will also be discussed in this paper. Pathophysiology The mechanism of the disease is largely unknown but the amyloid cascade hypothesis is the basis for the pathophysiology of AD. According to Armstrong "senile plaques (SPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) have been regarded as the "signature" pathological lesions of Alzheimer's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 19. Disease Management Each year, at least 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with diabetes, which makes this disease one of the nation's most serious health concerns that, if left unchecked, could reach epidemic proportions. And it doesn't stop there. Often, people who suffer from diabetes also have to contend with other complications, which not only increase the risk to the patient's health but also add to the rising cost of health care. This makes it necessary for an effective disease management program for diabetes to be in place. What Is Disease Management? Disease management is essentially a coordinated and continuous process of health care with the goal of managing and improving the health of the patients diagnosed with recurring or long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main goal of a disease management program for diabetes is to concentrate on providing a patient–centered method of health care by extending beyond clinical and medical issues and including the psychological and social aspects of the disease. After all, diabetes is a disease that affects more than just the patient – it also affects his family and care providers. Because of its chronic nature, diabetes also tends to impact patients psychologically, which makes it necessary that a proper venue and platform for emotional support be made available. Disease management for diabetes also seeks to provide care using nationally accepted and recognized standards. If a patient suffers from multiple chronic diseases related to diabetes, disease management can make medical service coordination easier and more efficient, even if the main focus of the management plan is only diabetes. By providing the most innovative approaches to diabetes care, a disease management program can lead to the improvement of health services and approaches. If efficiency is achieved, health care cost can be reduced by eliminating redundant services and the unnecessary costs associated with failed or poor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 21. Symptoms And Symptoms Of Antibiotics And Streptococcus... Some common pathogens that cause HEENT infections are H. influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Staphyloccoccus aureus. All three pathogens can cause conjunctivitis, H. influenza and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the main two pathogens that lead to acute otitis media (AOM), and H. influenzae and Staphylcoccus aureus are known to cause sinusitis (Cash & Glass, 2014). I would recommend a limited use of antibiotics in treatment of these diseases and other unconfirmed bacterial illness, due the increase chance of antibiotic resistance. Symptom management may be all that is required, and most children will improve without being prescribed antibiotic therapy. Watchful waiting for 48–72 may be the best choice to allow the patient to improve without antibiotic treatment (Cash & Glass, 2014). As providers, getting a whole history of the presenting symptoms and the duration of the symptoms will lead to better treatment outcomes for the patient. Antibiotics should only be used in the pediatric population when there is a known presence of a bacterial infection and the benefits will outweigh the harms of administering the antibiotic (Murray & Amin, 2014). The practice of prescribing antibiotics when not necessary leads to drug resistance and adverse reactions, which is a major public health concern in the pediatric population. In the United States, it is estimated that well over 50 million ineffective and unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions are written for children each ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 23. Chronic Wasting Disease Management Case Study As stated previously, the accurate and factual information regarding Chronic Wasting Disease is important to further gain an understanding among the many stakeholders of the degree of risks of CWD and more so, to gain support for CWD management. The failure to keep Texas Landowners, hunters and many other groups informed of the CWD with most recent facts could impact how these individuals see the disease management strategies (CWD Management Plan, 2015). The approach to tackling this disease has successful has been displayed in many strategies. One possible attempt that has been established is the Eradication Attempt in which The state of New York identified CWD in two different captive herds during a routine surveillance that took place ... Likewise, 1,200 deer were collected within the " Disease Zone"' during 2011 winter as well as 2,300 samples from hunters of deer that had been harvested the following fall and no positive result were identified of CWD (CWD Management Plan, 2015). Another Solution is the Control Attempt where states like Wyoming, Colorado, Wisconsin, where CWD has been around for several years, would not want to consider the Eradication Attempt as a course of action. The Control Attempt is to strictly focused on reducing the migration of free–ranging or captive deer also from CWD infected areas, which could greatly reduce the spread. In the Control Attempt, some states have paired up with hunters to monitor the prevalence, distribution, and managing of deer and elk population to meet the requirements of the CWD objectives (CWD Management Plan, 2015). A third solution is the Outreach Attempt, which has been a well developed and educated plan that is perceived as a critical component of CWD management to help keep Texas Hunters and the general public well informed of most factual information about CWD. This attempt to increase the awareness and implication of this disease by networking with natural resource professionals and strongly encouraging them to schedule Chronic Wasting Disease presentations with the wildlife, hunting, or ... A Coordinated Response: The Effect of Policies Regarding Evaluation and Management of Possible Ebola Patients in the Emergency Department In March 2014, the Ministry of Health in Guinea notified the Africa Regional Office of the World Health Organization of a new outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease [EVD]. As of December 2, 2014, this recent Ebola outbreak has seen 10,708 confirmed infections and 6,055 deaths, with the hardest hit countries being West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2014a). Two nurses who had directly cared for Duncan at Texas Presbyterian Hospital had confirmed laboratory diagnoses of EVD on October 10 and October 15. Both have been treated and have recovered from the virus. One of the nurses, Amber Vinson, flew from Dallas to Cleveland before her diagnosis after having cleared her travel with a CDC official prior to flying. She was asymptomatic at the time, but passengers on that flight were monitored for EVD symptoms for 21 days. A fourth case of Ebola in the U.S. was confirmed on October 23 in New York. Medical aid worker Craig Spencer had returned from Guinea where he worked with the organization Doctors Without Borders. Spencer self–monitored symptoms and called 911 when he developed a fever. He has recovered and was discharged from hospital care on November 11. There have been no reported cases in the U.S. since Spencer (CDC, 2014b). These four cases not only show that globalization and ease of travel between areas of the outbreak has made the U.S. population susceptible to Ebola, but it also demonstrates that medical technology, infection control measures, and the coordinated response helped to prevent a large–scale outbreak. Hospitals across the country have implemented policies and procedures for evaluation and management of patients who present to emergency rooms with possible EVD. • 32. The Problem Of Tb Infection And Disease Management MTB has been associated with human disease for thousands of years and this success to great extent is due to its ability to survive within the host for months or even decades in latent state. In the past few decades, however, it has also evolved itself into various new forms, especially as multidrug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) forms causing several outbreaks. For outbreak and contact tracing, DNA fingerprinting technology is now an accepted and widely used method. The population structure of MTB is geographically subdivided, and these genetically different lineages have adapted to their local human populations, as is evident from molecular epidemiology. However, scientific evidence for such an adaptation is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Owing to the special geographical diversities and living conditions, the predominance of different genotypes might imply their long–standing presence in these regions and may be linked with exponential contact with other populations. Mounting evidences suggest that MTB evolved as a human pathogen in Africa and further spread took place with the first migrations of modern humans out of Africa around 70,000 years ago. Among many of the early studies of phenotypic and genotypic relevance, the one consistent finding was that tubercle bacilli from South India were less virulent and more susceptible to oxidative stress when compared to isolates form Great Britain. South Indian strains were also found to be devoid of sulpholipids. Even though strains of these earlier studies were not genotyped, on the basis of our current knowledge of the global phylogeography of MTB, it can be assumed that most of the South Indian strains belonged to Lineage 1 (Indo–Oceanic)[17]. We found clear demarcation in the compartmentalization of MTB lineages of this study isolates with respect to their geographical locations. Clustering can be used in post–genomic data analysis to group strains with similar traits. Clustering of individual SITs varies from region to region. • 34. Factors Affecting The Medical Decision Making And Disease... The primary issues presented in this case are related to the cultural as well as the religious factors affecting the medical decision making as well as disease management. This involves Rivka Cohen, who is a six–year–old girl diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). Rivka and her family live in a tight knit Hasidic Jewish community where daily life is built on ancient laws and religious devotion. The Cohen family have acknowledged that their daughter requires treatment for her medical condition, but are struggling to find a compromise between their religious and cultural beliefs and the cf treatment team's recommendations. The Cohen's medical decision making and disease management is heavy influenced by their cultural and religious beliefs in conjunction with input from their rabbi. At the present time, the CF treatment team has established a treatment plan, but the Cohens are having a difficult time adhering to this plan due to several factor that will be discussed. Main Tenets of Hasidic Judaism The main tenets of Hasidic Judaism are; mysticism, they approach their belief from a mystical point of view (Karlinsky,2007). Another tenet is Torah where they believe that the first books of Moses called Torah are the literal word of God and they strive to follow all the 613 commandments that have to do with ethical duties to humans as well as ritual obligation to God (Karlinsky,2007). • 44. Health Belief Model Of The American Diabetes Association,... Theoretical Background According to the American Diabetes Association, the complications and cost acquired from diabetes can be dramatically reduce if patients are more aware of the potential risk and receive proper health prevention education. Diabetes self–management is essential in reducing the complications of disease. Researchers use several theories to help come up with the best way to provide care to patients with chronic illness such as diabetes. The major theory for this EBP is the Chronic Care Model, the author chose this model because of its versatility, it can be apply in any setting and allow for the improvement of care of both the individual and community level (Coleman, Austin, Brach, & Wagner, 2009) Health Belief Model Jalilian, Motlagh, Solhi, & Gharibnavaz (2014) used the Health Belief Model (HBM) to evaluate self–management promotion educational program intervention efficiency among diabetic patients. The HBM theory framework hypothesize that patients and or populations are more likely to engage in health promoting behaviors if they perceive a threat to their wellbeing (Jalilian, Motlagh, Solhi, & Gharibnavaz, 2014). Therefore patients with diabetes will adhere to their prescribed medical treatment if they are well educated about the disease process, understand the serious consequences that come with non–compliance(Jalilian et al., 2014). Figure 1: Modifiable and non–modifiable risk factors affecting the prevalence of Coronary Heart Disease in Australia [19] Modifiable Risk Factors Non–Modifiable Risk Factors Obesity Increasing age Hyperlipidemia Gender Excessive alcohol and tobacco use Family history Psychological stress Heredity Prevalence of CHD over the past century As shown in Figure 2 (Page 2), the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) observed a 73% decrease in mortality caused by CHD, between 1968 and 2011 [2]. More specifically, the decline in the mortality rate occurred in the late 1960s, where these changes were most evidence in males and females aged 55–64 and 65–74 years respectively [21]. As shown in Figure 3 and 4 (Page 2), the mortality rate in men aged 35–44 and 45–54 years declined at a decreasing rate, in contrast to older men where the mortality rate had increased [21]. In women however, the rate of overall decline had only been hindered in the 45–54 age category, as opposed to increasing in older age groups [21]. Thus, over the past century, mortality rates have generally declined [2]. Although, this rate of decline is gradually improving in older populations and deteriorating in younger ... Abstract Neurophysiology provides a range of important clinical investigations to that aid in the diagnosis and management of patients suffering from neurological disease. This experiment investigates the mechanisms behind two pathologies pertaining to channelopathies and demyelination: epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. This is done using a patch clamp technique, a laboratory technique in electrophysiology that allows the study of single or multiple ion channels in cells. Conditions were simulated using computer software to test the hypothesized mechanism behind epilepsy with understanding that it was due to an increase in the time constant, which would enable frequent neuron activations to occur simultaneously. Manipulations of stimulus impulse in refractory periods had proven this mechanism to be correct. Investigating the basis for multiple sclerosis, it was hypothesized that the cooling of impulse invasions would improve the demyelinated region of an axon by decreasing voltage, which was found to be an accurate phenomenon. Importance of Pharmacist Care in the Management of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in adults worldwide and it accounts for approximately one–third of mortality in Canada and in the United States. Elevated blood pressure (BP) is also another major cause of death worldwide. The reduction of BP is a cornerstone of the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), there are numerous hypertensive patients that do not achieve adequate blood pressure control. In the United States in 2009–2010, there was an estimation of 53% of all hypertensive people and 40% of treated hypertensive people had uncontrolled BP. The lower rates of blood pressure control have been reported in European countries. Interventions to improve the management of CVD risk factors are needed because patients may have difficulties accessing their primary care physicians and health care costs are rapidly rising, greater use of community–based models of care has been proposed. Pharmacists are highly accessible health care professionals because of their knowledge of drug therapy and their computerized medication records, they are well positioned to provide the necessary medication instructions to patients to improve safe medication use and are in collaboration with primary physicians to assist in preventive CVD care. • 64. Integration Of A Disease Management Contract The Problem: Regional Hospital is located in charlotte Mecklenburg North Carolina and serves a community of an estimated 875,000 members within the integrated delivery system (IDS). Recent efforts are being spent on reviewing several proposals for integration of a disease management contract that will assist in reducing utilization costs with the primary goal of improving our patient health outcomes. Many experts in healthcare economics point out that chronic medical conditions are directly associated with higher costs (G., 2010). This association is mainly attributed to the high usage of all types of care (Kongstvedt, 2013). Reports show that the number of people suffering with chronic conditions is radically rising and forecasts suggest that the number of American's with one or more chronic conditions will continue to grow by an estimated 37% between 2000 and 2030 (G., 2010). It is in our patient's main interest to shift our current focus from treatment for acute conditions to target a better utilization of the recorded 78% of health spending devoted to people with chronic conditions. The new strategic approach is one of developing quality medical care for people with chronic conditions which require ongoing care and care management to improve their health status (Kongstvedt, 2013). Analysis: A comprehensive review of our nation's overall healthcare costs disclose that only 1% of the United States population is consuming 20% of the total costs, while 10% of the ... • 66. Creating Two Bad Behavior Of Case And Disease Management... UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, SYDNEY FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND IT 31266 – Introduction to Information Systems Autumn –2015 Assignment I 1. Create TWO bad behaviour of Case and Disease Management systems scenarios and explain each in detail? The Encyclopaedia of Business, 2nd Edition on the Reference for Business website describes a role of a management information system as 'a computer system that provides management and other personnel within an organisation with up–to–date information' (Management Information Systems, para 4). A bad behaviour scenario is when this system does not meet the intended requirements and leaves the business less efficient and the customers dissatisfied. First scenario: A patient suffers from heart disease. Their medical consultation history such as appointments and follow–up care is taken care of by the case management system and the progress of their heart disease in managed by the disease management system. The patient moves houses and thus has a change in address, however this change, due to poor management, has only been recorded in the disease management system and thus the old address is still active in the case management system. Confidential health reports are sent to the wrong address due to the incorrect information in the case management system, unknown to the hospital. This compromises the patient 's medical privacy and also inconveniences them as they are not receiving their own personal health reports by mail. Second scenario: A ... • 68. Biological Understanding Of The Disease And Clinical... Despite current advances in both biological understanding of the disease and clinical management through systemic chemotherapy, improvements in survival rates continue to remain scarce, with only 3% of patients surviving over 5 years (Singh et al., 2015). At the point of diagnosis, only 20% of patients display localised disease and hence susceptibility to surgical resection and successful chemotherapeutic intervention (Indolfi et al., 2016). Therefore, for the majority of PDAC patients, tumours remain asymptomatic until an advanced–disease stage upon metastasis to the liver and other organs (Singh et al., 2015). The delayed manifestation of overt clinical symptoms, such as jaundice, pain and weight loss severely constrict treatment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the low prevalence of disease, it is not deemed feasible to carry out population–based screening for PDAC (Brand et al., 2011). However, the successful implementation of screening strategies to enrich for individuals who remain high–risk candidates for development of PDAC, such as patients of new–onset diabetes mellitus and chronic pancreatitis, provides distinct opportunities for early disease detection (Kang et al., 2016; Hwang et al., 2015; Zhang et al., 2014). This may in turn improve the number of asymptomatic PDAC cases detected at a stage where curative therapy remains viable (Kang et al., 2016). Serum Biomarkers The potential role of serum biomarkers in the early detection of PDAC provides promise for the screening of high–risk groups and presents an increasingly stratified approach to disease treatment (Costello et al., 2012). However, detection of PDAC at its curable stage remains highly difficult as early–warning signs are often non–specific (Radon et al., 2015; Tonack et al., 2013). PDAC must also be differentiated from other benign and inflammatory conditions of the pancreas, that often yield similarity in clinical presentation (Zhang et al., 2014; Tonack et al., 2013). Such conditions include chronic pancreatitis and benign biliary obstruction. Furthermore, around 75% of PDAC patients have tumours ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Retrieved from: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/771215_print This article sought to find an appropriate model to predict the risk of unplanned heart failure readmissions. The primary outcome from chart reviews also included death of heart failure patients within 30 days of discharge. The study looked at Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) models and the LACE+ index, to mention two of many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The article is published in a peer–reviewed, scholarly and evidence–based journal. The sources are valid and five of the seven references are current within five years of the date of the article. The fact that the article is looking for EBP, also lends to validity, in that the authors were seeking best practice and what is appropriate care available to the CHF patient. I liked this article, it did give me some new information, like the improvement of adherence to dietary restrictions and appropriate use of pharmacological therapy. The fact that all the literature points to CHF patients benefitting from advanced care and outpatient follow–up, seals my notions of the need for a CHF clinic. Increasing quality of life was also another important finding gained from this study. Courtney, M., Edwards, H., Chang, A., Parker, A., Finlayson, K., & Hamilton, K. (2009). • 74. Disease Classification Structures Disease Classification Structures Health care information systems cover a wide range of issues dealing with the supervision and use of biomedical information. Health information systems are central support tools in the administration of health care services. An acceptable health information system is important not only for evaluating the health needs of populations but also for preparation and for application of health interventions. It is equally imperative in the assessment of programs. The goal of information systems is to create an appropriate working environment. This is done by providing initial and going training, allocating resources, and by managing unintended consequences (Wager, Lee & Glaser, 2009). This summary will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Death certificates are also pulled to determine the cause of death and monitor diseases that could change and affect more populations. The data is pulled to analyze epidemiology and provide control of diseases across the world. Any negative aspects of your selection Every system in healthcare has its positive and negative traits. Though there are few disadvantages to the classification of diseases, understanding them is of importance. New diseases are being found yearly to even monthly, and every several years the classification of diseases needs to be updated, which can cause changes to the past and current classification. Once the system has been changed, and it is important that there is proper communication of the change so this classification of system remains understandable and useful. Categories for past census may be different from past categories, so these changes will also make it hard to compare past and current census. Conclusion Disease classification information structures are very important for the health care community. The ICD is used to monitor health care disease and categorize the disease in a format that is universal to all health care organizations. The ICD has provided a system to assist in the reimbursement process for health care organizations. The ICD is also important to monitor diseases and prevent the spread of infection. The ICD information structure has provided a standard that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 76. Nursing Personal Statement Examples The discovery of the absence or presence of a disease impacts the lives of patients. As a patient dealing with my own health struggles I see the crucial role a CLS plays in the discovery of a disease. CLS do not personally interact with patients, but they perform tests to diagnose the disease and provide the vital data of the disease, which helps physicians determine the best treatment for the patient. Without CLS diseases can be misdiagnosed, especially when they are based on symptoms. Many diseases share the same symptoms. As a result, diseases may be misdiagnosed and the treatment plan for the patient may be incorrect. This leads to stress for the patient and money wasted. The crucial role of a CLS in the diagnosis of a disease is one of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every job I had was a monumental experience for me; it not only equipped me with the organizational, time–management and research skills to oversee an entire project by myself, but also further fostered the development of my own interests in health and my goal to eventually become a CLS. I learned about laboratory documentation, how to professionally and effectively communicate with pathologists, principal investigators, and laboratory personnel, how to maintain records, how to follow strict written protocols to avoid contamination and maintain safety, and many more useful laboratory skills. I also gained the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced and rapidly changing detailed oriented environment. All of these events, my own health struggles and my ever–growing desire to expand my knowledge in the field of science eventually brought me to apply for the CLS program. I have one degree, a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, as well as spent years working in the science field. Clearly, I have an undeniable passion for science, which is one of the many reasons why I am confident that I am the best fit for the CLS ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
