faithful followers"; the scene enters with ominous music playing and a plane flying through the sky
filled with large and puffy clouds, and then the plane flies above the city we assume is Nuremberg.
During the documentary it portrays all the people of Nuremburg are happy and excited to greet
Hitler. Throughout this paper I will be talking about the different persuasion techniques and
elements and principles of design that are found in the Triumph of the will documentary. Once
Hitler lands he is greeted by the millions of people in Nuremburg. Millions of people are lined up on
the side of the street waving and giving their salute towards Hitler. When the people of Germany are
lined up on the sides of the street they are forming a continuous line, at 9:03 into the documentary,

Riefenstahl claimed that her film was simply a documentary, showing what was happening during
that time (Stupp). This is because she wanted to avoid prosecution and affiliation with the Nazi

the viewer hope, but also reality, and in the film, it looks anything but realistic.
In Night and Fog it was an appropriate design the way the switched from color to black and white. I
got two different meanings from this. 1) We live today in our present environment in a world filled
with color. We don't go through hunger, torture and our dignities aren't taken from us. The black and
white represents to me other people around the world which still today are going through similar
times as these victims in this film went through. 2) The theme in on which the comparison is about
the past and the present was very clear. The same pathways which were filled with the blood of the
victims were now all buried under the ground. The color represented the present and the black and
white represented the past.

Syvia is a primary example. Syvia's family is in a situation where her mother has to give her portion

"The Third Man" by Carol Reed. I chose to see this movie not because it was considered one of the
greatest film noir at all times but simply because it was starring Orson Welles. Orson was a persona
and I thought it would be great to see him again. Certainly the role he played as 'dirty' Harry with
brilliant monologues and sharp humor was simply fabulous. At first glance the movie made me think
that I am watching a predictable criminal story. The opening shoot of the close up of that unique
instrument was brilliant. Scenes were played in few sets that seemed to repeat every now and then.
Music choice was closer to a happy comedy than building a tension. Such as shiny cobblestone
street at night, that picture was used quiet few times during the movie. One of the best moments was
when we could see the shadow on the wall that was slowly making its way towards the audience.
Another moment that made me smile was a shoot of the cat that magically change its whole
appearance within seconds transforming itself into a totally new cat. I wondered what happened
with can number one? Most likely fury little creature quit his/hers acting career and left into deep

In Mary Beard's book, The Roman Triumph, she explores one of the most interesting victory
celebrations of the ancient world. Instead of having a small gathering, or even a raucous party,
Romans brought what they had seized and carted it through the city. They even brought some people

As shown in the poems that were included in this DBQ, the spirit triumphs. Yes, Holocaust
survivors, reflect the brutality and finding beauty within their unfortunate circumstances. However,
those who overcome ravaging diseases, an accomplishment in sports, or just about anything
involving liberation is evidence of triumph – making holocaust survivors a small percentage of what
the human spirit can overcome. For instance, my fear of doing certain skills in sports gave me the
motivation to endure. Similar to the Holocaust stories, at one point, I thought I would never be able
to break free of the moments where I was convinced there was no solution to my problem.
Nonetheless, I strived for the best and remained positive – which soon paid off. In Doc B, the girl

The film Triumph of the Will was created in 1934 after Hitler was named Fuhrer of Germany. At the
time, Hitler was eager to improve the public image of the NSDP (National Socialist German
Workers ' Party). After his election as chancellor in Early January 1933, Hitler gave Leni Riefenstahl
the job of filming the annual NSDAP conference in Nuremberg, Germany . Riefenstahl accepted the
offer and agreed document, direct and edit the Conference. As years pasted, the infamous
"documentary" began to be speculated as possible Nazi Propaganda.
Although presumptions began to arise, Riefenstahl stated that Triumph of the Will was clearly a
factual documentary and stated: "Not a single scene is staged...It is history, pure history" and that
she simply filmed what she saw. Susan Sontag's response in her dissertation Fascinating Fascism
concluded that the film is fascist propaganda promoting Nazi ideology but itself is not a about
fascism . Sontag was right to the title the film was fascist due to Riefenstahl's extreme forthright
about her infatuation with Hitler. In an interview with Detroit news Riefenstahl stated: "To me Hitler

Pros And Cons Of Propaganda
Propaganda is not a recent idea or concept however since the creation of film propaganda has found
its way into them, especially documentary's. Documentary filmmaking is a platform and mode of
filmmaking associated with truth and actuality to present an overview of a topic or issue
(Aufderheide, 2007). Audiences expect this when watching documentary films because generally
the topic of a documentary film is based on a real issue and/or event without the use with actors, sets
and special effects (with the exception of docudramas) (Nichols, 2010). Although they may be based
on a real–world issue/event the filmmaker(s) behind the documentaries have an agenda and are
trying to push certain ideologies or points of view on the audience. However, the assumption is
made that they are doing this through fact and truth (Bizz). Propaganda on the other hand does not
rely on truth or fact as it is an idea of dishonestly. Propaganda never tries to persuade or inform
instead it attempts to deceive an audience by conveying/creating representations and ideas in a text
that can only have one dominant reading (Aufderheide, 2007). Propaganda filmmaking is usually
created by governments and political figures to impose hateful/nationalistic viewpoints and
ideologies on the general populous (Aufderheide, 2007). Triumph of the Will (Riefenstahl, 1935)
and Prelude to War (Capra, 1943) demonstrate that documentaries have the ability to create a false
representation of history due to the filmmaker's

Triumph des Willens Film Review Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will) is a film directed by
Leni Riefenstahl that was commissioned by Adolf Hitler. The film details events around the 1934
Nuremberg Congress, the people who were in the rally and how they responded to it. Triumph is
fundamentally a pro Hitler film that was meant to be a documentary that "records history as it
happened" (Barsam 1975, p12). In essence though it was a propaganda film meant to unite Germany
under Hitler's regime. As in any good propaganda film Triumph focused on portraying the good
points of the Nazis and not a single negative point was seen about them in the film. Hitler knew that
for the film to be a success as a propaganda film showcasing too much of a political view would
cause Triumph to be less successful. That is why he wanted the film to be more artistic and
aesthetic. The film itself was described to be "aesthetic, not political" (Levinson 1998, p237). This
did not mean though that the film was not political. Triumph was filmed in a way that it subtly
expresses the political views and standpoints of the Nazi party to involve and manipulate the people
who were not interested in politics. The main purpose of the film was to garner support for Hitler's
regime be they in the form of inspiring people into joining the army, or other supporting assets for
Germany such as farmers, miners, fishers or labourers. Techniques in how these were achieved will
be discussed in this review as well as its reception both domestically and internationally. There were
various techniques used in the films in order to catch the intended audience and manipulate the
German people into believing and helping Hitler's cause. An example of this is how in Hitler's
speeches he made no clear distinction between Germany, its people and the Nazi Party. This leads to
people being indoctrinated into believing that the Nazi Party was synonymous with Germany.
