Mommie Dearest Psychology
Obsessive–Compulsion/Narcissistic Disorders Every person has a personality, but with a personality people also possess personality disorders.
According to Rathus (2010) "personality disorders are patterns of inflexible traits that disrupts social life or work and may distress the affected
individual" (p. 525). Little do most know that they themselves and the people around them daily have one or more disorders. A few personality
disorders are obsessive–compulsive, obsession with perfection, and narcissistic, need for admiration. The film Mommie Dearest, directed by, Frank
Perry, shows how personality disorders, like obsessive–compulsion and narcissism, effects children in their childhood and as they grow older. Mommie
Dearest is about... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the beginning of the film it opens up to a scene of Joan's daily morning routine and how she follows every step precisely. This is a prime example of
obsessive–compulsive which is "inflexibility, and fixation on rules, procedures and orderliness" (Rathus, 2010, p. 526). Obsessive–compulsive disorder
is shown again when Joan discovers a wire hanger in Christina's closet, and Joan precedes to throw all her daughter's clothing to the ground and
spanks Christina with the hanger. Then, while she has Christina clean up her clothing a dispose of the wire hanger Joan sits on the child's bathroom
floor and screams about how filthy it is and forces Christina to clean that as well. One scene shows just how much the obsessive–compulsive disorder
is in charge of Joan's life, but this is not the only one narcissistic is another strong disorder Joan Crawford contains. The film projects a part where
Christina and Joan are swimming in the pool and racing each other back and forth. No matter how much of a head–start Joan gives Christina, Joan
continues to beat her daughter, and Joan does not stop even if Christina is exhausted. This shows the lack of empathy that is required in the
narcissistic personality disorder because she will not let Christina rest or win (Rathus, 2010). Joan also shows this in the final scenes of the movie in
her will and she does not leave any of the money to any of her children, which also shows the lack of empathy she has for her

1967 American Biographical Crime Film: Bonnie And Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde is a 1967 American biographical crime film directed by Arthur Penn and starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as the title
characters Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. The screenplay was written by David Newman and Robert Benton. Warren Beatty produced the film. The
film is based on the real story of two American bank robbers in Texas on the 1930s.
In the opening scene, Bonnie is getting ready for a new day, with lack of hope, and we get a close–up of her painted lips. The spectator gets a false
impression of Bonnie as she is first presented as a sexual object. But, later on, one will have access to her inner self and go beyond her appearance.
Then, she flops on the bed, hitting the bed frame in frustrated boredom and then clenching the frame and looking through it. She is symbolically
trapped behind bars because she is trapped in a small town with a boring waitress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other films, when a female character wears makeup or wears so–called В« provocative clothes В», this immediately makes her dumb. But, in this
movie, Bonnie is an intelligent and smart woman who reads and writes poetry. In a scene which takes place in a restaurant, Bonnie encounters a
waitress who seems exactly like her when she used to be one. In her past, she used to be considered by clients as an object, but now she lives a life
where she is no longer dependent towards men. Her partner, Clyde, is uncomfortable with sex and does not want to dominate her. Thefilm is about
sentiment rather than forced relationships and subordination. At times, Bonnie seems to be driving the film all by herself. Indeed, she poses for a
photograph with a pistol and a cigar and dominates a captured Texas ranger. Another female character, whose name is Blanche, contrasts to the strong
character of Bonnie. In fact, Blanche is a caricature of weak femininity, because of her exaggerated loud screaming and conservative

Beatty And Dunaway: A Narrative Analysis
A tremendous mistake took place in the Oscar Awards 2017, Los Angeles. Most of the awards had already been given out; best direction, production,
actress, supporting actors, special effects and music. The most important award for best picture was about to be presented by Warren Beatty and Faye
Dunaway.
"The best picture award goes to..." They both chanted together. Warren opened the envelope slowly and kept glancing at it for a long time with a
sharp look as if he needed glasses. He suspected that there was some sort of mistake so he passes it to Faye, she noticed that it read "La La Land",
but she didn't process that it also said: "Emma Stone, best actress" in a small print by the edge of the paper. Since she supposed that Warren was just
causing suspense for the audience, she figured that it was correct. She yelled out with great joy "La La Land!" The whole cast and crew came rushing
to the stage, hugging each other and soon crying of amazement. The producer and director were already beginning their speeches when the producer of
La La Land, Jordan Horowitz shoved the envelope from the director's hand. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

letters.
After the uncomforting silence left, the whole cast and crew of moonlight came up the stage. Although it wasn't easy, after they finished their speeches
the audience finally settled. The coordinators of the Oscars are extremely devastated, for it was the first big mistake ever made by the

St. Mark's Place Research Paper
Summer Lin On any Friday night, St. Mark's Place is a mecca for East Village twenty–somethings and NYU co–eds. Teens gather outside a dimly lit
frozen yogurt shop called Yogurt Station, dribbling pistachio ice cream from their plastic spoons. Mannequins hang suspended by ropes and
Chucky–esque dolls and skulls line the storefront of the consignment shop, Search and Destroy. Every other building on the block is a head shop or
tattoo parlor or a bar. On weekends, St. Mark's smells like cheap Chinese food and tobacco smoke. It's where tourists and locals flock for a tattoo or
piercing or a rare vintage find. During peak daytime hours, vendors hock multi–colored bongs, straw hats and plastic sunglasses out on the sidewalk for
$30 or less. In all its garish storefronts and blinking neon signs, St. Mark's Place is surprisingly tame compared to the street in its heyday. The

Bonnie and Clyde: Beginning of a New Hollywood Era Essay
BONNIE AND CLYDE : "Beginning of the New Hollywood Era."
Bonnie and Clyde is a 1967 American crime film about Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the criminal version of Romeo and Juliet, the true story of
the most beloved yet infamous outlaws, robbers and convicts who journeyed the Central United States during the Great Depression. The film was
directed by Arthur Penn, and stars Faye Dunaway as Bonnie Parker, and Warren Beatty as Clyde Barrow.
Bonnie and Clyde is reckoned as one of the 60s' most talked–about, volatile, controversial crime/gangster films combining comedy, terror, love, and
ferocious violence, and regarded as one of the first films of the New Hollywood era, in which it broke many taboos and was so popular amongst the ...

The medium shot that follows shows the water marks in the ceiling and wall of her low–income frame house, indicating her dire financial straits. When
she she flings herself down on her bed, the bars both run diagonally across the screen and cast shadows across her face indicating for us the prison
she feels she feels she's in as she repeatedly strikes the cage surrounding her. Based on how she saw herself in the mirror, she clearly thinks she
deserves better. The following close up (when she grabs the bars) and zoom into an extreme close up of her eyes reflects her torment. As the camera
holds her face, we can see the resignation in her face as she turns to get dressed for work. Bonnie is trapped in a dead end life. By stressing this
aspect of her life, Penn has us initially glimpse Bonnie in the best possible light.
This scene also explains Bonnie's following actions in two ways. First is that she understands exactly how Clyde must have felt in prison when they
later meet, establishing an immediate bond between them. The second is that, when Clyde tells her that he cut off two of his toes to get out of a
work detail, she believes him for the man of action he portrays himself to be , ("Boy, did you really do that."). This compares favorably with her
desire to rise above her own dull circumstance and take action

Elements of Film Noir between the Movies Maltese Falcon,...
This essay will identify the importance of the elements of Film Noir between the movies Maltese Falcon, Chinatown, and L.A. Confidential. This will
also discuss if Chinatown and L.A. Confidential remain true to the classical form or if they are in the baroque level of genre. This essay will also
identify these discussions using examples for each film. Maltese Falcon could be explained more precisely as transitional films that mark limitations
amongst true film noir and film that may have some elements or none noir. Maltese Falcon presents elements that future became trademarks of film
noir, in specific the divided and dishonorable protagonist. The dim and troubled urban environment in which they live but it ends small of a
simply noir viewpoint and pictorial illustration. For example, Sam Spade character fits into the noir protagonist by being a dirty hero. He is
materialistic or greedy person who does not follow the rules of conservative morals. The audience can see his greediness when you see his smirk
on his face when Miss Wonderly pulls out a wad of cash from her purse. He is a man who is having an affair with his partner's (Archer) wife. When
he finds out that his partner Archer is dead, Spade has no remorse or show any sign of being sad. Spade responds to Archers death by having all of
his belongings taken away from the office. This is one example of Spades character fitting the film noir era with its low key black and white visual
style. Film noir is usually

Film Analysis: Bonnie And Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde Response: Editing One of the most exceptional aspects to the film Bonnie and Clyde is that it was edited by a woman, Dede Allen,
who became the first person to receive a solo opening credit for editing. She once said that "intellect and taste count, but I cut with my feelings." This
is no better exemplified than her editing style represented in Bonnie and Clyde. This film accommodated a satisfying and significant compromise of the
familiar Hollywood continuity editing and the newer, more artistic style of disjunctive editing. The pace of the editing in the film can be closely
connected to the narrative's rapid progression in urgency. Everything happened very quickly between, to, and for Clyde (played by Warren Beatty) and
Bonnie (played by Faye Dunaway). Allen indicated this in her editing, especially in the final sequence as they were being shot to death. Despite their
movements being shot in slow motion, every action happened at lightning speed. It had that "blink and you'll miss it," hasty feeling. ... Show more

The viewer saw them register what the birds and rustling leaves meant and finally making eye contact with each other as if to silently convey their love
before crumpling in a storm of bullets. We see the bullets making contact with their bodies in slow motion, detailing the way that time distorted them in
traumatic circumstances. The power of this scene never lessens. Decades later, it still remains a shocking, vital, and new

Audra's War: A Short Story
It was battle morning. War morning. Audra woke in darkness and stuck her head out the bedchamber window. It was cool out, not frigid, and gentle
wisps of wind shook the leaves. If the weather stayed this calm, that would be advantageous, because arrows would remain on their proper trajectory
once loosed, and they needed every advantage possible. She glanced up at the sky and spotted a handful of blue–black clouds easing by. Some cloud
cover, little wind, and no precipitation... this bode well. At any moment, Faye and Una would burst into the room and insist upon dressing Audra in
her battle clothes and leather armor. And once again, they would try to convince her not to go. "My lady, you don't have to go to battle!" Faye had

Regardless of their arguments, Audra was going, even though deep in her soul, she assumed this was her time to die. For months, a little voice
whispered, "This is the end; this is the beginning." To Audra, that meant death was certain, but she was willing to die for a worthy cause. She and
Rory would be separated on the field, because if both of them fell, there would no doubt be a struggle for the throne, and protracted war in Aber
Hael. Since Carlton's brother had not been heard from in years on end, he was presumed dead, Audra had declared Vaughan to be the next king
should she and her son die. However, that did not seem necessary, because, for inexplicable reasons, Audra knew Rory would live. Behind his back,
she made sure Vaughan had assigned a score of men to remain at his side until death. Yet still, she had not revealed to Rory the name of his true
father, and now, on the morning of battle, it was too late. He should not ride out burdened with that knowledge; his focus needed to rest solely on the
fight ahead. Thus, a letter remained locked away in her foot trunk with the details spelled out, and Vaughan was aware he was to retrieve the letter

The Diagnostic Achievements Of Gene Wilder
Gene Wilder, who established himself as one of America's foremost comic actors with his delightfully neurotic performances in three films directed by
Mel Brooks; his eccentric star turn in the family classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"; and his winning chemistry with Richard Pryor in
the box–office smash "Stir Crazy," died on Sunday night at his home in Stamford, Conn. He was 83.
Eric Weissmann, who was Mr. Wilder's lawyer for many years, confirmed the death. A nephew, Jordan Walker
–Pearlman, said that the cause was
complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Wilder's rule for comedy was simple: Don't try to make it funny; try to make it real. "I'm an actor, not a clown," he said more than once.

Wilder was an accomplished stage actor as well as a screenwriter, a novelist and the director of four movies in which he starred. (He directed, he
once said, "in order to protect what I wrote, which I wrote in order to act.") But he was best known for playing roles on the big screen that might have
been ripped from the pages of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
He made his movie debut in 1967 in Arthur Penn's celebrated crime drama, "Bonnie and Clyde," in which he was memorably hysterical as an
undertaker kidnapped by the notorious Depression–era bank robbers played by Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. He was even more hysterical, and
even more memorable, a year later in "The Producers," Mr. Brooks's first film and the basis of his later Broadway hit.
Mr. Wilder played the security–blanket–clutching accountant Leo Bloom, who discovers how to make more money on a bad Broadway show than

Characteristics Of Borderline Personality Disorder In The...
Faye Dunaway's portrayal of Joan Crawford in the movie Mommy Dearest (1981) exhibits many of the characteristics of borderline personality
disorder (BPD). Her character also seems to suffer from antisocial narcissistic behaviors as well as histrionic personality and obsessive–compulsive
personality disorder. These disorders often occur together and are closely related mental health disorders, which result in a disruption in self image,
relationships and regulation or control of emotions (Life on the borderline, 2014). The causes of borderline personality disorder (BPD) are unclear, but
it often has severe effects on the one suffering from this disorder as well as those around them and closest to them. This disorder often strikes at a
young age in the teens or early adulthood. Usually someone affected by BPD lacks a clear understanding of their goals and direction or purpose of
their life. (Life on the borderline, 2014). Symptoms include; broad swings in their opinions and values. Those who suffer from BPD often have poor
self esteem and feel others don't support them. When in a relationship someone with BPD will expect to be the center of attention (Rathus, 2010). This
was demonstrated in the movie Mommie Dearest, directed by Frank Perry (1981). The audience observes Joan during a photoshoot for publicity. The
reporter centered his attention on Christina (Diana Scarwid), Joan's daughter. Joan becomes very disgusted and called the photo shoot to an
abrupt stop. The relationship Joan had with Mr. Mayer (MGM studios) also demonstrates some of the personality traits of BPD. In relationships,
those with BPD, tend to view others as all good or all bad. Everything is right or wrong, black or white. There is no middle ground (Life on the
borderline, 2014). Joan goes into her meeting with Mr. Mayer believing he is her friend and her lifeline to her failing career. She leaves feeling not
only that she is worthless, but that he is her enemy. She feels very unsupported and as her career and life are over. A person with BPD also Forms
bonds with others very quickly and expects to be the center of attention and have those they are in relationships with devote all their time and efforts

Noir (noir means black in French) is a style which was frequently seen in 1940–1950s film mostly consisting of crime, sex and fiction. Modern motion

though these two neo–noir movies were released 35 years apart, they are parallel in the movie elements, common background history of female
character and psychological situation of the main protagonist. The Two movies share common visual element and audio elements like camera focus,

... Unimaginable is Condor's reaction and the shock of seeing all those friends' and his love's bodies murdered atrociously! It is just indescribable!
This is insurmountable for him! It is not only the anger or the ambiguity of the situation, but also the fright, the feeling of being threatened and in peril
since he was one of the two survivors whom the assassins had missed (the other one an ex–alcoholic was absent that day), the desperation, and too
much improvise burden on his chest! He lets himself out of that torturous place, and finds a phone cabin. He calls the office headquarters in the world
trade center and explains what he saw. A complicated story is about to start! They have him meet Wicks whom is the head of the department. When
Condor perceives also the seventh member of their office has been murdered in his own home, his gut feelings start to see through a trap, something

Comparing Bonnie And Clyde
"You've heard the story of Jesse James, of how he lived and died. If you're still in need, of something to read, here's the story of Bonnie and Clyde."
The award winning movie Bonnie and Clyde is a romanticized account of the career of the all known violent bank robbing couple and their crew. This
movies screenplay, actor performances, costume choices, and great editing made this movie one to remember.
The true story of Bonnie and Clyde takes place in the great depression; where Bonnie and Clyde gang up with: Clyde's brother Buck Burrow, his wife
Blanch, and C.W. Moss. They called themselves the Barrow Gang. They robbed banks, held up stores, and killed people. Though they weren't very
good at bank robbing, but they were great at getting their names in the paper. They had been on a roll, up until a raid catches them off guard, resulting
in Buck getting shot multiple times leaving Blanch taken custody by the police. Later the film ends in Bonnie and Clyde being set up and ambushed by
the police who machine gunned them to death. With the overall theme of this movie being, love will make you do crazy things, it's easy to see how ...

From the beginning of the film you see Clyde in expensive business–like suits, you always see him in at least a vest, tuning in the gangster roots of the

But as for Bonnie's character they had to give her a way to gain more sympathy, they needed visual reminders of her femininity. In the first scenes of
the movie Bonnie wears a loose, crumpled button–down dress and flat shoes. The light colors and the softness of her clothes makes her seem very
unthreatening. But as the movie progresses and she starts her new life of crime her clothes become more fitted and expensive giving her the confidence

This movie depicts a time in history during the California Water Wars which took place in the Los Angeles area in the early 1900's pitting farmers
from Owens Valley against the city of Los Angeles. The farmers had been seeking federal funding for a public irrigation project. William
Mulholland who was the head of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power interfered with the farmers irrigation project. Mulholland built an
aqueduct which channeled from Owens River to bring more water to Los Angeles. In a history class I would use this movie as an example of how
the water company had a strong presence in government and used its power to its own benefit. Students would then discuss whether or not they
believe the influence of large companies has a positive or negative effect on society. They would then connect their opinions back to examples in the
movie and the Water Wars. I enjoyed watching this movie because it had a plot which was based on real events in California and gave me the ability
to think like a private investigator and try to figure out the

Anna Wong Research Paper
1928 and 1929 were important years for Los Angeles–born Chinese actress Anna May Wong. News reports about her Hollywood movies decreased,
instead, according to an American gossip columnist visiting Europe during Wong's tenure, she was "acclaimed by nobility" in several European
newspapers (Petersen, 2014). Severely limited by the noxious roles she was offered in Hollywood, which misrepresented Asian women, Wong left the
United States for Europe (Vechten, 2003). She then spent two years in Germany, England and France, where she gained global attention and
worldwide stardom. This special period in Wong's life was also a sensitive period for Chinese immigrants and all the ethnic actors and actresses in

achieved in the Alhambra Theatre last night by Anna May Wong of Hollywood in 'Song,' the first picture she screened here under the management
of Richard Eichberg, independent German producer. (New York Times, 1928)" They thought that having Wong in the film was a chance for
development and a chance to enlarge the area by involving characters of Asian, when in that time, not so many Asians were in Europe. Besides,
Wong was truly a wise woman. She spoke fluent German in her first talkie, "The Road to Dishonor". The article claimed that "Four months ago she
hardly knew a word of German. Today, they assure me, she speaks like a native. From the spluttering that goes on I feel certain this is true" (Shute,

Narcissism: Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disor
About 1 in 100 people have Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, OCPD (International OCD Foundation, 2010), and when the person has this
disorder they can have trouble in their personal relationships. In their work life they do an exceptional job in whatever it is they do, but to their
co–workers and boss they can be mean. In the public's eyes they are the best person to have ever lived, but to their close friends and acquaintances
they can be a cruel individual. Many times a person with OCPD can be a Narcissist. Narcissism is when an individual believe that they should be
praised and receive excessive admiration. Only around 1% of the population of America has narcissism that have been studied (American Psychology
Associtaion, 2015). It is believed that we actually have 17% of the population that is narcissistic. People with this personality disorder typically have
low self–esteem, does not respond positively towards criticism and critiques. Also they manipulate people into getting whatever they want. In the award

It began with his most elaborate plan to commit the perfect bank robbery. Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) uses his cunning abilities to rob a bank,
alongside his crew, by holding hostages and making them all dress with similar apparel to mislead the police. As the police rush to the scene, a
Detective Keith Frazer (Denzel Washington) is put in charge of the case to negotiate with the robbers. Throughout thefilm, Russell is always two steps
ahead of the police. He manages to bug the police and as a result, he is aware of everything they are planning. In one scene of the movie Detective
Frazer thinks he knows what kind of man Russell is and to disprove him Russell stages an execution of a hostage. The bank owner, having found out
of the occurrences happening at his bank, hires Madeleine White (Jodie Foster) to protect the information, he kept in a secret safe deposit box, from

The Severity Of Faith-Based Movies
A common trend you notice with faith–based movies is that many critics tend to be atheists that don't like to be portrayed as the bad guys so they will
normally dump on these types of films. Pure Flix Entertainment does have a tendency to be too preachy with titles like God's Not Dead but here they
have a film The Case for Christ which aims to tell a different story. Based on the book by Lee Strobel, an atheist award–winning investigative
journalist goes into an in–depth research trip to attempt to disprove his wife's newfound Christian faith. Nonbelievers can relax because there is no "us

Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle
Wong Kar Wai's movie 'ChungKing Express' bears many similarities to Godard's 'A Bout de Souffle'. To start with, Wai employs a number of
cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New Wave, such as for example the jump–cut which is evidently taken from Godard's film.
His use of the Godard–ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally–exclusive scenes together, making the passage of time unnoticeable. Other
Godard–ian touches include the many shots of clocks, which remind the viewer that despite the protagonist's fixation on the past, time continues to
move on and that moments in the present are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She wears the same type of cloths, has the same hair do and her rather eccentric attitude to life also corresponds to that of her French counterpart.
The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out movies aimed at the general public and make sure that they bring in
a profit. This is much like the French film industry was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai's 'ChungKing Express' was clearly
not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and appreciation for the art of film. Godard's 'A Bout
de Souffle' was also a film which was made to rebel against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way,
both of the film directors have something in common with each other.
Much of Wai's work has included themes of time passing and how every human emotion, every material object or specifically tinned food expires.
This reoccurring matter isn't simply an accident but it carries a very significant political message. At the time that Wai made 'ChungKing Express',
Hong Kong was pending to be handed over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist government. This period was very turbulent
for the Hong Kong people as they were in anticipation of a great change, but they didn't know whether it would be negative or positive.

The 1976 Stanley Lument's Network

attempts to depict what news organizations go through in their quest for both relevant and popular programming. During their journey, the organization
struggles with its own ethics in creating news that isn't necessarily truthful and for the most part is only elevating the emotions of a particular base. In
addition to depicting the advanced and multifaceted sides of television news networks, the film also makes a strong attempt at forming a strong narrative

This scene serves as a turning point that accelerates the premise of the film from respecting Howard as a reputable newscaster to a bolstorus prophet

perspectives. One appears to come from someone who is experiencing this situation from inside the news station. This gives an interesting idea as to
how things were actually playing out in this situation from someone that is there experiencing the antics as they ensue. Another perspective, is the
viewpoint of someone who is watching the news. This vantage allows for the film audiences to experience the vigor and anger that Howard is
perpetuating on his audience. A final perspective would be at the end of the scene, when someone is on the ground looking up at the people screaming

Who Is The Antagonist In Chinatown Film
The review of the film Chinatown published on June 1 1974 was written by Roger Ebert and throughout the review Ebert paints the film in an
exceedingly positive light.
In Roger Ebert's review, he declares that 'the whole movie is a tour de force.' I concur with this statement as I believe the film has been managed with
great skill. 'Chinatown' is a perfect blend of mystery, murder, darkness and betrayal, all of which are part of the neo–noir genre. Though noir films
were generally in black and white 'Chinatown' was in colour and although the film was in colour it still managed to generate an ominous atmosphere

Nicholson depicts Gittes with amazing grace and naturalness and his actions throughout the film are powerfully effective. Nicholson is charismatic and

Ebert states in his review that "one of [Chinatown's] delights is in the way that dropped remarks and chance clues gradually build up the portrait of a
crime." I agree with this statement and believe that the slow build–up is what makes the film so delightful and captivating. What begins as an

Chinatown ( 1974 ), Falls Under The Category Of Film Noir...
Chinatown Critique Essay The film Chinatown (1974), falls under the category of Film Noir Style. The film 's basis its plot on corruption scandals,
which shed light on dark secrets and very unfortunate events around the Cross' Family, Evelyn Cross and her Father and John Cross (John Huston),
who is the center figure of the plot, and a private investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson). The central of the plot is a charge of conspiracy of the
corruption between, politicians, Mr. Cross, and the police department corruption, that started in the less hopeless Chinatown, and now has ramifications
in every sphere of L.A city. The history of the plot comes from a real–life event, The 1908 Owned River scandal and the administration of the
department of water during this scandal. The film started with Gitte, hired as a private investigator by a socialite beauty "Faye Dunaway, to investigate
her husband Hollis (a chief engineer), played by Darrel Zwerling. The mise–en –scene and the film are elaborated and directed by Roman Polansky
(director) and Robert Towne (screenplay). In cinematography, one of the more important elements is the mise–en–scene. Due to the fact, that it keeps
the audience emotional and psychological involve in the plot. As can be appreciated in Chinatown (Polansky, 1974), in this plot Polansky utilized
several elements to create in the audience a double crosser twist, through the corruption and immoral activities portrayed during the film. In general, the

This week's movie is Chinatown by Roman Polanski. This movie in short follows this private investigator J.J. Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) who is

There is a rather important line in the film " As little as possible." as said by Mr. J.J Gittes. There is a certain significance about the line. When in
Chinatown J.J Gittes did as little as possible because that was the best way of going about the business. He was told not to get involved, "one's help
was more of a hindrance rather than a help."(Chinatown) which funny because that is the opposite of what he did when he left Chinatown. He got too
involved overly too much. Another important line is "You may think you know what you're dealing with, but believe me, you don't." as said by Noah
Cross. As the web of mystery unfolds and more and more information is being uprooted, you learn the quoted line is as true as ever. It's ironic because
since he is a private investigator, he expects that he should know everything, expect anything and that nothing would surprise him. How incorrect of him
to think that. The line proves true as the plot twists and writhes around. According to IMDB, one of those most notable lines in film history is in
Chinatown, the line being "Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown." There are metaphors weaved into the plot, character development and character dialogue of
the film. But the one metaphor that stood out the most was also the most noticeable. Chinatown itself is "...a microcosm of 1930s Los Angeles – a

Cowboys And Comedy: A Comparative Analysis
In his article "Cowboys and Comedy", Mathew R. Turner suggests that western comedy films both reinforce and subvert the conventions of their more
serious classical counterparts in an attempt to "breathe new life into the genre". While the author recognises that comedy "relies, to a certain extent, on
the reversal of expectations", he argues that the subgenre of western comedies actually has its own complex set of principles which can be observed
throughout films belonging to the subgenre. To illustrate this Turner compares five western comedies ranging in timeframe from Go West (Edward
Buzzell, 1940) to Shanghai Noon (Tom Dey, 2000).
Although Turner's essay does not include any reference to Little Big Man (Arthur Penn, 1970) or ВЎThree Amigos! (John Landis, 1986), both of ...

This is most evident in ВЎThree Amigos!, a comical remake of John Sturges' The Magnificent Seven (1960) which mimics the setting, character types
and even parts of the dialogue of the earlier film. While Little Big Man is contrastingly not an overt pastiche of one film in particular, audiences with
a prior knowledge of the western movies will likely be able to detect allusions to Stagecoach (John Ford, 1939) Broken Arrow (Delmer Daves, 1950)
and The Searchers (John Ford, 1956) among others. Additionally, the film satirises the broader clichГ©s of thegenre without necessarily referring back
to specific movies in which these appear. For example, the character of Louise Pendrake (Faye Dunaway) parodies the apparent limited role of women
within the Old West through her simultaneous appearance as both a conservative Christian schoolmarm and a flirtatious prostitute. Likewise, the
transformation of the film's protagonist Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman) into "the Soda Pop Kid" refers back to the gunslinger stock character that

Film Noir, Chinatown: Neo-Noir Film
I'd like to preface this review by warning the reader that this movie contains sexual imagery, violence, drugs, nudity, physical abuse, incest, and rape.
Why does this need to be stated? Well, firstly because all these things personally make me extremely uncomfortable, but more importantly, for
anybody reading this who could have a panic attack and/or depressive episode triggered by such things. If this is you, my advice as someone who has
experienced both of those things, is to steer clear of this movie because it is definitely not worth the emotional trauma.
Made in 1974, Chinatown is often labelled as a neo–noir film, meaning that while the film was created after the 40s and 50s, it utilises elements of
film noir in its storytelling. As with a typical film noir, Chinatown takes the plot of a crime drama, in this case that of infidelity private investigator
Jake Gittes' (Jack Nicholson) finding out that the woman who hired him (Diane Ladd) to observe her husband Hollis Mulwray (Darrell Zwerling)
was not the real Mrs. Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway). The movie follows Gittes as he attempts to uncover why he was set up, and who killed Mr.

Mommie Dearest Psychology

  • 1. Mommie Dearest Psychology Obsessive–Compulsion/Narcissistic Disorders Every person has a personality, but with a personality people also possess personality disorders. According to Rathus (2010) "personality disorders are patterns of inflexible traits that disrupts social life or work and may distress the affected individual" (p. 525). Little do most know that they themselves and the people around them daily have one or more disorders. A few personality disorders are obsessive–compulsive, obsession with perfection, and narcissistic, need for admiration. The film Mommie Dearest, directed by, Frank Perry, shows how personality disorders, like obsessive–compulsion and narcissism, effects children in their childhood and as they grow older. Mommie Dearest is about... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the beginning of the film it opens up to a scene of Joan's daily morning routine and how she follows every step precisely. This is a prime example of obsessive–compulsive which is "inflexibility, and fixation on rules, procedures and orderliness" (Rathus, 2010, p. 526). Obsessive–compulsive disorder is shown again when Joan discovers a wire hanger in Christina's closet, and Joan precedes to throw all her daughter's clothing to the ground and spanks Christina with the hanger. Then, while she has Christina clean up her clothing a dispose of the wire hanger Joan sits on the child's bathroom floor and screams about how filthy it is and forces Christina to clean that as well. One scene shows just how much the obsessive–compulsive disorder is in charge of Joan's life, but this is not the only one narcissistic is another strong disorder Joan Crawford contains. The film projects a part where Christina and Joan are swimming in the pool and racing each other back and forth. No matter how much of a head–start Joan gives Christina, Joan continues to beat her daughter, and Joan does not stop even if Christina is exhausted. This shows the lack of empathy that is required in the narcissistic personality disorder because she will not let Christina rest or win (Rathus, 2010). Joan also shows this in the final scenes of the movie in her will and she does not leave any of the money to any of her children, which also shows the lack of empathy she has for her ... • 2. 1967 American Biographical Crime Film: Bonnie And Clyde Bonnie and Clyde is a 1967 American biographical crime film directed by Arthur Penn and starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as the title characters Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. The screenplay was written by David Newman and Robert Benton. Warren Beatty produced the film. The film is based on the real story of two American bank robbers in Texas on the 1930s. In the opening scene, Bonnie is getting ready for a new day, with lack of hope, and we get a close–up of her painted lips. The spectator gets a false impression of Bonnie as she is first presented as a sexual object. But, later on, one will have access to her inner self and go beyond her appearance. Then, she flops on the bed, hitting the bed frame in frustrated boredom and then clenching the frame and looking through it. She is symbolically trapped behind bars because she is trapped in a small town with a boring waitress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other films, when a female character wears makeup or wears so–called В« provocative clothes В», this immediately makes her dumb. But, in this movie, Bonnie is an intelligent and smart woman who reads and writes poetry. In a scene which takes place in a restaurant, Bonnie encounters a waitress who seems exactly like her when she used to be one. In her past, she used to be considered by clients as an object, but now she lives a life where she is no longer dependent towards men. Her partner, Clyde, is uncomfortable with sex and does not want to dominate her. Thefilm is about sentiment rather than forced relationships and subordination. At times, Bonnie seems to be driving the film all by herself. Indeed, she poses for a photograph with a pistol and a cigar and dominates a captured Texas ranger. Another female character, whose name is Blanche, contrasts to the strong character of Bonnie. In fact, Blanche is a caricature of weak femininity, because of her exaggerated loud screaming and conservative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Beatty And Dunaway: A Narrative Analysis A tremendous mistake took place in the Oscar Awards 2017, Los Angeles. Most of the awards had already been given out; best direction, production, actress, supporting actors, special effects and music. The most important award for best picture was about to be presented by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. "The best picture award goes to..." They both chanted together. Warren opened the envelope slowly and kept glancing at it for a long time with a sharp look as if he needed glasses. He suspected that there was some sort of mistake so he passes it to Faye, she noticed that it read "La La Land", but she didn't process that it also said: "Emma Stone, best actress" in a small print by the edge of the paper. Since she supposed that Warren was just causing suspense for the audience, she figured that it was correct. She yelled out with great joy "La La Land!" The whole cast and crew came rushing to the stage, hugging each other and soon crying of amazement. The producer and director were already beginning their speeches when the producer of La La Land, Jordan Horowitz shoved the envelope from the director's hand. ... After the uncomforting silence left, the whole cast and crew of moonlight came up the stage. Although it wasn't easy, after they finished their speeches the audience finally settled. • 4. St. Mark's Place Research Paper Summer Lin On any Friday night, St. Mark's Place is a mecca for East Village twenty–somethings and NYU co–eds. Teens gather outside a dimly lit frozen yogurt shop called Yogurt Station, dribbling pistachio ice cream from their plastic spoons. Mannequins hang suspended by ropes and Chucky–esque dolls and skulls line the storefront of the consignment shop, Search and Destroy. Every other building on the block is a head shop or tattoo parlor or a bar. On weekends, St. Mark's smells like cheap Chinese food and tobacco smoke. It's where tourists and locals flock for a tattoo or piercing or a rare vintage find. During peak daytime hours, vendors hock multi–colored bongs, straw hats and plastic sunglasses out on the sidewalk for $30 or less. In all its garish storefronts and blinking neon signs, St. Mark's Place is surprisingly tame compared to the street in its heyday. The once–grungy three–block stretch of the East Village was the temporary home for Leon Trotsky and W.H. Auden and Jeff Buckley. The miscreant denizens that made up the epicenter of American counterculture have since long vacated the premises, leaving behind tourists and teenagers and leading critics to repeatedly proclaim that, "St. Mark's is dead." There are vestiges of its former squalid glory, of course: Trash and Vaudeville, a punk rock and goth clothing store from the 1970s, St. Mark's Comics, St. Mark's Bookstore and Limbo, a boutique that once clothed rock legends like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. But it's not quite the same. A revolving door of luxury apartments and big–name retailer stores popped up in the place of historic night clubs and galleries, leaving St. Marks with a slew of vegan ice cream shops (DF Maven's,) dessert bars (Spot) and yoga studios (Yoga to the ... Bonnie and Clyde is a 1967 American crime film about Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the criminal version of Romeo and Juliet, the true story of the most beloved yet infamous outlaws, robbers and convicts who journeyed the Central United States during the Great Depression. The film was directed by Arthur Penn, and stars Faye Dunaway as Bonnie Parker, and Warren Beatty as Clyde Barrow. Bonnie and Clyde is reckoned as one of the 60s' most talked–about, volatile, controversial crime/gangster films combining comedy, terror, love, and ferocious violence, and regarded as one of the first films of the New Hollywood era, in which it broke many taboos and was so popular amongst the ... When she she flings herself down on her bed, the bars both run diagonally across the screen and cast shadows across her face indicating for us the prison she feels she feels she's in as she repeatedly strikes the cage surrounding her. Based on how she saw herself in the mirror, she clearly thinks she deserves better. The following close up (when she grabs the bars) and zoom into an extreme close up of her eyes reflects her torment. As the camera holds her face, we can see the resignation in her face as she turns to get dressed for work. Bonnie is trapped in a dead end life. By stressing this aspect of her life, Penn has us initially glimpse Bonnie in the best possible light. This scene also explains Bonnie's following actions in two ways. First is that she understands exactly how Clyde must have felt in prison when they later meet, establishing an immediate bond between them. The second is that, when Clyde tells her that he cut off two of his toes to get out of a work detail, she believes him for the man of action he portrays himself to be , ("Boy, did you really do that."). This compares favorably with her desire to rise above her own dull circumstance and take action ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Elements of Film Noir between the Movies Maltese Falcon,... This essay will identify the importance of the elements of Film Noir between the movies Maltese Falcon, Chinatown, and L.A. Confidential. This will also discuss if Chinatown and L.A. Confidential remain true to the classical form or if they are in the baroque level of genre. This essay will also identify these discussions using examples for each film. Maltese Falcon could be explained more precisely as transitional films that mark limitations amongst true film noir and film that may have some elements or none noir. Maltese Falcon presents elements that future became trademarks of film noir, in specific the divided and dishonorable protagonist. The dim and troubled urban environment in which they live but it ends small of a simply noir viewpoint and pictorial illustration. For example, Sam Spade character fits into the noir protagonist by being a dirty hero. He is materialistic or greedy person who does not follow the rules of conservative morals. The audience can see his greediness when you see his smirk on his face when Miss Wonderly pulls out a wad of cash from her purse. He is a man who is having an affair with his partner's (Archer) wife. When he finds out that his partner Archer is dead, Spade has no remorse or show any sign of being sad. Spade responds to Archers death by having all of his belongings taken away from the office. This is one example of Spades character fitting the film noir era with its low key black and white visual style. Film noir is usually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An industry historically built on underrepresentation and both thematic and screen "white–washing". Each of these movies either invert or corrupt the image of Hollywood and "the Industry" creating a unique audiovisual experience, in an environment familiar to those who work in the industry, and the audience that watches and follows. • 11. Film Analysis: Bonnie And Clyde Bonnie and Clyde Response: Editing One of the most exceptional aspects to the film Bonnie and Clyde is that it was edited by a woman, Dede Allen, who became the first person to receive a solo opening credit for editing. She once said that "intellect and taste count, but I cut with my feelings." This is no better exemplified than her editing style represented in Bonnie and Clyde. This film accommodated a satisfying and significant compromise of the familiar Hollywood continuity editing and the newer, more artistic style of disjunctive editing. The pace of the editing in the film can be closely connected to the narrative's rapid progression in urgency. Everything happened very quickly between, to, and for Clyde (played by Warren Beatty) and Bonnie (played by Faye Dunaway). Allen indicated this in her editing, especially in the final sequence as they were being shot to death. Despite their movements being shot in slow motion, every action happened at lightning speed. It had that "blink and you'll miss it," hasty feeling. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 12. Audra's War: A Short Story It was battle morning. War morning. Audra woke in darkness and stuck her head out the bedchamber window. It was cool out, not frigid, and gentle wisps of wind shook the leaves. If the weather stayed this calm, that would be advantageous, because arrows would remain on their proper trajectory once loosed, and they needed every advantage possible. She glanced up at the sky and spotted a handful of blue–black clouds easing by. Some cloud cover, little wind, and no precipitation... this bode well. At any moment, Faye and Una would burst into the room and insist upon dressing Audra in her battle clothes and leather armor. And once again, they would try to convince her not to go. Regardless of their arguments, Audra was going, even though deep in her soul, she assumed this was her time to die. For months, a little voice whispered, "This is the end; this is the beginning." To Audra, that meant death was certain, but she was willing to die for a worthy cause. She and Rory would be separated on the field, because if both of them fell, there would no doubt be a struggle for the throne, and protracted war in Aber Hael. Since Carlton's brother had not been heard from in years on end, he was presumed dead, Audra had declared Vaughan to be the next king should she and her son die. However, that did not seem necessary, because, for inexplicable reasons, Audra knew Rory would live. Behind his back, she made sure Vaughan had assigned a score of men to remain at his side until death. Yet still, she had not revealed to Rory the name of his true father, and now, on the morning of battle, it was too late. He should not ride out burdened with that knowledge; his focus needed to rest solely on the fight ahead. Thus, a letter remained locked away in her foot trunk with the details spelled out, and Vaughan was aware he was to retrieve the letter should Audra ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Characteristics Of Borderline Personality Disorder In The... Faye Dunaway's portrayal of Joan Crawford in the movie Mommy Dearest (1981) exhibits many of the characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Her character also seems to suffer from antisocial narcissistic behaviors as well as histrionic personality and obsessive–compulsive personality disorder. These disorders often occur together and are closely related mental health disorders, which result in a disruption in self image, relationships and regulation or control of emotions (Life on the borderline, 2014). The causes of borderline personality disorder (BPD) are unclear, but it often has severe effects on the one suffering from this disorder as well as those around them and closest to them. This disorder often strikes at a young age in the teens or early adulthood. Usually someone affected by BPD lacks a clear understanding of their goals and direction or purpose of their life. (Life on the borderline, 2014). Symptoms include; broad swings in their opinions and values. Those who suffer from BPD often have poor self esteem and feel others don't support them. When in a relationship someone with BPD will expect to be the center of attention (Rathus, 2010). This was demonstrated in the movie Mommie Dearest, directed by Frank Perry (1981). The audience observes Joan during a photoshoot for publicity. The reporter centered his attention on Christina (Diana Scarwid), Joan's daughter. Joan becomes very disgusted and called the photo shoot to an abrupt stop. The relationship Joan had with Mr. Mayer (MGM studios) also demonstrates some of the personality traits of BPD. In relationships, those with BPD, tend to view others as all good or all bad. Everything is right or wrong, black or white. There is no middle ground (Life on the borderline, 2014). Joan goes into her meeting with Mr. Mayer believing he is her friend and her lifeline to her failing career. She leaves feeling not only that she is worthless, but that he is her enemy. She feels very unsupported and as her career and life are over. Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle Wong Kar Wai's movie 'ChungKing Express' bears many similarities to Godard's 'A Bout de Souffle'. To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New Wave, such as for example the jump–cut which is evidently taken from Godard's film. His use of the Godard–ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally–exclusive scenes together, making the passage of time unnoticeable. This is much like the French film industry was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai's 'ChungKing Express' was clearly not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and appreciation for the art of film. Godard's 'A Bout de Souffle' was also a film which was made to rebel against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way, both of the film directors have something in common with each other. This scene serves as a turning point that accelerates the premise of the film from respecting Howard as a reputable newscaster to a bolstorus prophet pawn that is used to fund and advance a struggling news network. When it comes to the point of view in this scene, it shifts through several different perspectives. One appears to come from someone who is experiencing this situation from inside the news station. This gives an interesting idea as to how things were actually playing out in this situation from someone that is there experiencing the antics as they ensue. Another perspective, is the viewpoint of someone who is watching the news. This vantage allows for the film audiences to experience the vigor and anger that Howard is perpetuating on his audience. A final perspective would be at the end of the scene, when someone is on the ground looking up at the people screaming on their balconies and out of their windows. Each of these point of views, provide a different idea about the scene that is occurring, but when put together, they allow the audience to better grasp the full premise of the ... • 32. Who Is The Antagonist In Chinatown Film The review of the film Chinatown published on June 1 1974 was written by Roger Ebert and throughout the review Ebert paints the film in an exceedingly positive light. In Roger Ebert's review, he declares that 'the whole movie is a tour de force.' I concur with this statement as I believe the film has been managed with great skill. 'Chinatown' is a perfect blend of mystery, murder, darkness and betrayal, all of which are part of the neo–noir genre. Though noir films were generally in black and white 'Chinatown' was in colour and although the film was in colour it still managed to generate an ominous atmosphere and still managed to enhance feelings of entrapment. The exceptional directing of the film, crisp dialogue and flawless performances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nicholson depicts Gittes with amazing grace and naturalness and his actions throughout the film are powerfully effective. Nicholson is charismatic and energetic in his role, helping to bring depth and life to the character Gittes. Nicholson also manages to portray all his feelings realistically, whether it be sadness, anger, confusion, or any emotion. This helps to keep the audience interested and captivated and it also helps the audience to be pulled into Gittes' world. Ebert states in his review that "one of [Chinatown's] delights is in the way that dropped remarks and chance clues gradually build up the portrait of a crime." I agree with this statement and believe that the slow build–up is what makes the film so delightful and captivating. What begins as an investigation on an adultery case slowly turns into the solving of a murder, familial secrets and political conspiracies. The aura of mystery that surrounds the entire film helps to keep the audience enthralled and leaves the audience guessing, providing the basis for an exceptional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Chinatown ( 1974 ), Falls Under The Category Of Film Noir... Chinatown Critique Essay The film Chinatown (1974), falls under the category of Film Noir Style. The film 's basis its plot on corruption scandals, which shed light on dark secrets and very unfortunate events around the Cross' Family, Evelyn Cross and her Father and John Cross (John Huston), who is the center figure of the plot, and a private investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson). The central of the plot is a charge of conspiracy of the corruption between, politicians, Mr. Cross, and the police department corruption, that started in the less hopeless Chinatown, and now has ramifications in every sphere of L.A city. The history of the plot comes from a real–life event, The 1908 Owned River scandal and the administration of the department of water during this scandal. The film started with Gitte, hired as a private investigator by a socialite beauty "Faye Dunaway, to investigate her husband Hollis (a chief engineer), played by Darrel Zwerling. The mise–en –scene and the film are elaborated and directed by Roman Polansky (director) and Robert Towne (screenplay). In cinematography, one of the more important elements is the mise–en–scene. Due to the fact, that it keeps the audience emotional and psychological involve in the plot. As can be appreciated in Chinatown (Polansky, 1974), in this plot Polansky utilized several elements to create in the audience a double crosser twist, through the corruption and immoral activities portrayed during the film. In general, the motion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The film has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and an average rating of 9.3/10. Many can agree on one thing, the performances give by Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson are what solidified the movie as a classic neo–noir thriller. Jerry Goldsmith composed and recorded the film's score in ten days, and received an Academy Award nomination. The soundtrack is ranked 9th on the American Film Institute's list of the top 25 American film scores. • 35. Film Analysis Of Chinatown By Roman Polanski This week's movie is Chinatown by Roman Polanski. This movie in short follows this private investigator J.J. Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) who is hired by the wife of the chief engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. At first, the person who hires him is a facade to the real wife of the chief engineer. The original intentional for hiring him was to find out if the chief engineer was having an extramarital affairs with someone else; he was not. As time goes on, the plot thickens with the chief engineer mysterious dying from a supposed suicide. Yet, undeterred J.J took it upon himself with the help of the actual chief engineer wife Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) to find out who murder the chief engineer and other saddening things related to deceit, corruption, and murder. The actions committed by J.J. are in some ways a heroic in one form and in others the exact opposite where in turn it caused a fiasco of events. Some of the ways the directors show this is through the dramatic terms of close up shots, pans, and crane shots. Chinatown by Roman Polanski uses the dramatic elements of close up shots, pans, and crane shots to show J.J. Jake Gittes as an antihero. The element of close up shots has been used in this movie when uncovering the secret of Evelyn. Examples Of Foreshadowing In Chinatown Chinatown When Los Angeles private investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by a faux Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband's suspicious activities, Gittes believes it's a simple case of dishonesty. There is a rather important line in the film " As little as possible." as said by Mr. J.J Gittes. There is a certain significance about the line. When in Chinatown J.J Gittes did as little as possible because that was the best way of going about the business. He was told not to get involved, "one's help was more of a hindrance rather than a help."(Chinatown) which funny because that is the opposite of what he did when he left Chinatown. He got too involved overly too much. Another important line is "You may think you know what you're dealing with, but believe me, you don't." as said by Noah Cross. As the web of mystery unfolds and more and more information is being uprooted, you learn the quoted line is as true as ever. It's ironic because since he is a private investigator, he expects that he should know everything, expect anything and that nothing would surprise him. How incorrect of him to think that. The line proves true as the plot twists and writhes around. According to IMDB, one of those most notable lines in film history is in Chinatown, the line being "Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown." There are metaphors weaved into the plot, character development and character dialogue of the film. But the one metaphor that stood out the most was also the most noticeable. Chinatown itself is "...a microcosm of 1930s Los Angeles – a potent symbol for the complexity of real life." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Cowboys And Comedy: A Comparative Analysis In his article "Cowboys and Comedy", Mathew R. Turner suggests that western comedy films both reinforce and subvert the conventions of their more serious classical counterparts in an attempt to "breathe new life into the genre". While the author recognises that comedy "relies, to a certain extent, on the reversal of expectations", he argues that the subgenre of western comedies actually has its own complex set of principles which can be observed throughout films belonging to the subgenre. To illustrate this Turner compares five western comedies ranging in timeframe from Go West (Edward Buzzell, 1940) to Shanghai Noon (Tom Dey, 2000). Although Turner's essay does not include any reference to Little Big Man (Arthur Penn, 1970) or ВЎThree Amigos! (John Landis, 1986), both of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is most evident in ВЎThree Amigos!, a comical remake of John Sturges' The Magnificent Seven (1960) which mimics the setting, character types and even parts of the dialogue of the earlier film. While Little Big Man is contrastingly not an overt pastiche of one film in particular, audiences with a prior knowledge of the western movies will likely be able to detect allusions to Stagecoach (John Ford, 1939) Broken Arrow (Delmer Daves, 1950) and The Searchers (John Ford, 1956) among others. Additionally, the film satirises the broader clichГ©s of thegenre without necessarily referring back to specific movies in which these appear. For example, the character of Louise Pendrake (Faye Dunaway) parodies the apparent limited role of women within the Old West through her simultaneous appearance as both a conservative Christian schoolmarm and a flirtatious prostitute. Likewise, the transformation of the film's protagonist Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman) into "the Soda Pop Kid" refers back to the gunslinger stock character that frequently appears in straighter ... • 39. Film Noir, Chinatown: Neo-Noir Film I'd like to preface this review by warning the reader that this movie contains sexual imagery, violence, drugs, nudity, physical abuse, incest, and rape. Why does this need to be stated? Well, firstly because all these things personally make me extremely uncomfortable, but more importantly, for anybody reading this who could have a panic attack and/or depressive episode triggered by such things. If this is you, my advice as someone who has experienced both of those things, is to steer clear of this movie because it is definitely not worth the emotional trauma. Made in 1974, Chinatown is often labelled as a neo–noir film, meaning that while the film was created after the 40s and 50s, it utilises elements of film noir in its storytelling. As with a typical film noir, Chinatown takes the plot of a crime drama, in this case that of infidelity private investigator Jake Gittes' (Jack Nicholson) finding out that the woman who hired him (Diane Ladd) to observe her husband Hollis Mulwray (Darrell Zwerling) was not the real Mrs. Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway). The movie follows Gittes as he attempts to uncover why he was set up, and who killed Mr. Mulwray after details of his affair with a young woman (Belinda Palmer) were leaked to the papers. ...
