Welcome back to English 4 U
English 4 U.
For beginners we have vocabulary
about farm animals and telling the
time. There is some grammar about
simple questions. On the magazine
cover is a London bus – inside we
give you its history. And staying
with transport, we tell you about the
origins of Rolls-Royce cars. And do
you know the difference between
Wales and whales? Look at pages
46-47 for details. For advanced
learners we continue our articles
about plain English. Of course, you
will also find the usual mix of jokes,
puzzles and competitions.
We welcome your suggestions and
questions. Our contact details are at
the bottom of this page.
Happy reading!

In English, after a question you must always put a ‘question mark’

The London Bus
The London Bus is one of city’s principal icons. The red double-
deck Routemaster is recognised world-wide.
Buses have been used on the streets of London since 1829, when
George Shillibeer started operating his horse drawn ‘omnibus’
service. This was a horse-drawn coach capable of transporting up
to 18 people at a time. Motor ‘omnibuses’ came into use in London
in 1902.

What is the name of the bus in the picture?
Who designed the first omnibus?
In what year did the motor omnibus start
operating?
On how many routes does the Routemaster
now operate?
When was the last Routemaster bus made?
Answers on page 61
From the 1900s until the 1960s London went its own way, and
designed its own vehicles specially for London use instead of using
the bus manufacturers’ standard
products used elsewhere.
The last bus specifically designed
for London was the Routemaster,
built between 1956 and 1968.
Since then, all buses built for
London’s local services have been
variants of models built for general
use elsewhere.
Due to their age, there are few
Routemaster buses in operation
today. They are now used on only
two heritage routes in the capital.

ﺗﻘﻊ ﺃﺷﻜﺎﻟﻬﺎ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻄﻴﻮﺭ
Meaning:
People who are a lot alike tend to gather together and become
friends. This can be used to mean that people are alike in both
good ways and bad ways.
Example:
Ali and Zainab are sitting in the cafeteria at their school. They
see a group of people that they do not like very much. All of the
people in this group are impolite. They are often rude to the other
students at the school. Zainab points to the group and then turns
to Ali.
”Every one of those people is impolite. How did they all get to be
friends with one another?” she asks.
”Well, birds of a feather flock together
birds of a feather flock together. Maybe that is the reason
they are friends. They all act the same way,” Ali answers.
“Maybe,” says Zainab, “but I don’t like any of them.”

Sharjah Discovery Centre
Heritage
Continuing our series about Sharjah Museums, this month we look at the
Sharjah Discovery Centre. This Centre is filled with entertainment and
action suitable for all children up to the age of 13. It is located near to
the airport.
The Discovery Centre opened in March 1999. It is an interactive ‘hands-
on’ children’s museum. The exhibits are grouped into thematic areas
that are familiar to children. The areas include: Water World, Body Zone,
Sports, Build Town and Drive Town.
In this familiar world the children feel comfortable as they freely discover,
explore, play and learn. Children can move through the exhibits at their
own pace. They will have fun discovering, and learning about themselves
and the world around them. From this interaction they will understand
that science and technology are part of their everyday life.
Trained instructors are available to help children and adults understand
the exhibits and make the most of their visit. School groups are also very
welcome.
This is a perfect place to visit – you can have fun and learn at the same
time!

There are many kinds of whales – Baleen Whales, Sperm Whales, Blue
Whales and Humpback Whales. The Blue Whale is the largest mammal in
the world. It grows up to 35 metres and weighs 150 tons. They usually
live for between 40-100 years.
Whales are warm-blooded mammals, just like we are. They breathe
air into lungs, through their blowholes. These are at the top of the
head. Some whales stay underwater for more than two hours without
breathing air.
Some whales eat only plankton which is very small animal and plant life
in the water and some whales eat very large fish.
A male is called a bull, a female is called a cow and a young whale
is called a calf. There is a strong bond between the mother and her
young.
There are whales in all the oceans of the world. Sometimes a whale
becomes lost. In January 2006 people watched a whale swimming in the
River Thames in London.

Rolls-Royce
Frederick Henry Royce (27 March, 1863 – 22 April, 1933) was a
car manufacturer, who with Charles Stewart Rolls (27 August, 1877
– 12 July, 1910) founded the Rolls-Royce company.
Frederick Henry Royce was born in Alwalton, Huntingdonshire,
England. His family ran a flour mill and later they moved to
London. Royce’s father died in 1872 and he had to go out to work
selling newspapers and delivering telegrams, having had only one
year of formal schooling. In 1878 he started an apprenticeship
with the Great Northern Railway company, and later entered into a
business partnership making electrical fittings.
Charles Stewart Rolls was born into an aristocratic family in London.
He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge.
He showed an interest in engines from his youth and owned his
first car at the age of 18 – one of the very first cars owned in
Wales.

¤
¤ a showroom a room where items are exhibited for sale

With his fascination for all things mechanical, Royce was interested
in motor cars and bought his first car in 1901. This did not meet
his high standards and so he first improved it and then decided
to manufacture a car of his own which he did in a corner of the
workshop in 1904. Two more cars were made. They were were all
called Royces. He was introduced to Charles Rolls, who had a car
showroom in London. Rolls was impressed and agreed to take all
the cars Royce could make provided they were called Rolls-Royce.
The first Rolls-Royce car was made in December 1904 and in 1906
they joined forces to become Rolls-Royce Ltd.
Royce provided the technical expertise to go with the financial
backing and business acumen of Rolls.
The Silver Ghost was responsible for the company’s early
reputation. It had a 6-cylinder engine and 6173 cars were built.
Today Rolls-Royce cars are sold throughout the world. They are
expensive and luxurious cars, and only a few thousand cars are
manufactured each year.

Apart from the usual business jargon and gobbledygook,
offices resound with corporate ‘management speak’, or
‘marketing speak’.
Management speak is typically used to make something seem
more impressive than it actually is.
Last year, a survey in the United Kingdom revealed that
many staff who work for big corporate organisations find
themselves using management speak as a way of hiding the
fact that they haven’t done their job properly. Some people
think that it is easy to bluff their way through by using long,
impressive-sounding words and phrases, even if they don’t
know what they mean.
