Kids' space
Following our letter writing competition about ‘ 2008 ’ in last month’s
magazine, here are the three best letters. We are sending Hadeel, Fateema,
and Daphene each an English dictionary.
I am very optimistic
regarding this new year “2008”.
For that, I have a lot of hopes that
I wish will come true. First of all,
I hope that peace and happiness will
spread amongst my family and friends and
that misery will always keep away from them.
Moreover, I hope that every patient will
recover from their illness and become
better. Furthermore, I hope that my best
friend and I will stay friends forever and will
never fight over silly things. Finally, I hope
that the world will become a better place.
In fact, I wish that there would be no
more wars and all the children in the
world will live happily ever after.

The Dhow
The
Dhow
The dhows of Arabia are
among the oldest ships
known to man, but they
are slowly losing out to
modern container ships.
A dhow is a traditional Arab sailing vessel and is indigenous to the
coasts of the Arabian Peninsula, India and East Africa.
Dhows regularly make the crossing from Dubai and Sharjah to Iran.
Some dhows are still made today by methods that have changed little
over the centuries. There are no architectural marine drawings, just
the rule of thumb and eye from the shipwright making the dhow.
First the ribs are carved out of naturally shaped tree trunks and the
hull is built up. One of the few concessions to modernity is the use of
iron nails. As driving nails directly into the wood can split the wood,
the craftsmen bore holes into the wood by hand for each nail. It is
painstaking and laborious work. Dhows range in size from 25 tons
to 300 tons.
The distinct silhouette of the dhow is a product of evolution in which
the skills of the Arabian Gulf boat builders have, over the centuries,
incorporated features from the merchant fleets of other countries.
Most of the dhows still plying the waters of the Arabian Gulf are
up-dated versions of the traditional craft.
Now the weather is cooler you can have a pleasant stroll along the
waterfront to see the dhows being loaded ready for their trips across
the Gulf.

London Eye
Here are some facts and figures about the London Eye.
The London Eye opened in March 2000 and is now a major
tourist attraction. It is situated in central London, on the south
bank of the River Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament.
Over 3.5 million people visit the London Eye each year.
The wheel design was used as a metaphor of the turning of the
century. The London Eye has 32 air-conditioned capsules and
each capsule weighs 10 tons. Travelling at a speed of 26 cm
a second or 0.9 km an hour, each rotation takes 30 minutes.

35. 35
35
London Eye
The height of the London Eye is 135 metres and the wheel has
a circumference of 424 metres.
The London Eye passenger capsules incorporate an entirely
new design form for an observation wheel. Instead of being
suspended under gravity they turn within circular mounting
rings fixed to the outside of the main rim, and this allows a
spectacular 360 degree panorama at the top.
Finally, on a clear day, passengers in the London Eye’s capsules
can see up to 40 kilometres in all directions.
Now test your knowledge about the London Eye.
1) When did the London Eye open?
2) How many people visit the London Eye each year?
3) How many capsules does the wheel have?
4) What is the speed of the London Eye?
5) What is the height of the wheel?
6) On a clear day, how far can you see?
Did you know?
The Eye of the Emirates in Sharjah is 60 metres high and the
Great Dubai Wheel, planned to open in 2009 will be 185 metres
high and will be the world‛s largest observation wheel.

Meaning – We have had problems with our booking system for
over 10 years and we do not know how to solve them.
¤

plementing a comprehensive low adhesion action programme.‛
Meaning – Our trains are often late.

Hogmanay
Hogmanay
Hogmanay is celebrated in Scotland on
New Year‛s Eve. Celebrations start in
the early evening and reach a climax
at midnight. Hundreds of thousands
of revellers take to the streets to see
in the New Year. Minutes before the
start of new year, a lone piper plays,
then the bells of Big Ben chime at the
turn of midnight, and everyone sings
Auld Lang Syne.
The Hogmanay custom of singing Auld
Lang Syne has become common in many
countries. Auld Lang Syne is a poem by
Robert Burns (1759-1796) which was
later set to music.
The song‛s title may be translated into
English literally as ‘old long since‛, or
more idiomatically ‘the good old days‛.
Here are the two main verses, with
the chorus. We have translated some
words into English.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we‛ll tak a cup o‛ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye‛ll be your pint-stoup!
And surely I‛ll be mine!
And we‛ll tak a cup o‛ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

56. Spelling problems
I find English spelling difficult. Do you have any tips to help me to
improve my spelling?
Melissa, Ras Al Khaimah
Spelling words in English is difficult. Unfortunately there are no
simple rules. In fact, many native speakers of English have problems
with spelling correctly. One of the main reasons for this is that
many words are not spelled as they are spoken. This difference
between pronunciation and spelling causes a lot of confusion for all
learners of English. Some people have suggested that there should
be a reform of the way words are spelled but this is unlikely.
