Sex, Marriage, And Sexual Commitments
Sex and love have changed the last few decades immensely; changing how people look at dating,
marriage, and sexual commitments. Definition of dating has changed from generation to generation.
Marriage has also changed and to the point that many people are putting marriage off longer. From
these changes there has been a new culture that has formed. The hookup culture is the lack of
commitment to a single partner, but having flings with one or more people. Dating has not been
around but for nearly a hundred years. Paula England, who started the research of the hookup
culture using a college survey, stated in her paper for The Family in Transition, "...the invention of
dating started in the 1920s and was helped along by the automobile and commercial sports, like
movie theaters, where youth would go." This gave young people more of freedom to enjoy
themselves with other people of the same age. Dating was not a real cause as people had marriages
arranged for class status. In the movie Mona Lisa Smile the character Betty, portrayed by Kirsten
Dunst, married her college boyfriend. They mainly married as it was expected of them from the
pressure of their family for their rise in class status. This is seen throughout history in marriages but
has changed over the last several decades. Betty and Spencer, her husband, who were allowed to
date and able to see if they were a perfect fit. Unlike that young people looking for a match had to
be under supervision. "...young men often had

Rebel Without A Cause Pop Culture
Midterm paper: Pop Culture: Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll. Rebel Without a Cause led way to the first
on–screen teenage bad boy. James Dean plays a disgruntled teenager (Jim) is unsatisfied with life
and the patriarchy of following the rules. He hates that his dad lets his mom run the household and
caters to her versus the traditional father makes all the rules stance. Rebel Without a Cause allows
for a deep consideration of what the stereotypical 1950s teenager felt. The movie looks at teenage
relationships with the older generation and exclaims the disdain both parties share for one another
during the tremulous coming of age time. Jim's parents are not sure how to raise him the best way,
and he loses respect for them judging on how they interact with him and each other. The other main
teenage characters within the film are Judy portrayed by Natalie Wood, and John "Plato" Crawford
portrayed by Sal Mineo. Natalie Wood's character is probably reminiscent of what many young
female teenagers went through at the time. She deals with gender issues and must find her way as a
developing young woman when her parents seem clueless to her concerns and struggles. Her father
does not know how to guide her through this next stage of life and instead turns her away which
causes her to feel bad about herself. Her Mother has no real clue on how to help either of them as
well. Plato is also a striking character within the story that is utterly confused and has no real
guidance in life. All three

Movie Review : The Virgin Suicides
Sofia Coppola is the daughter of the famous director Francis Ford Coppola who made The
Godfather films. She is a producer, director, screenwriter and actress. Coppola directed and wrote
the 1999 film The Virgin Suicides. Her directorial work for Lost in Translation won an Oscar. She
became the first American woman to win the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival
in 2010.
Coppola made brief appearances in her father 's films throughout her childhood. Acting, however,
would not be Sofia 's strong suit. As seen in her performance in the third instalment of The
Godfather. She was cast at the last minute as Mary Corleone, Coppola was ruthlessly panned by
critics for her stiff and false portrayal.
Following this, Sofia retreated from the spotlight, enrolling in the fine arts program at the California
Institute of Arts, concentrating on her photography, experimenting with costume and fashion design.
In 1993, however, she began writing the screenplay adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides ' The Virgin
Suicides. Starring James Woods, Kathleen Turner and Kirsten Dunst, the subtle, haunting film was
an overwhelming critical and art house success.
Coppola made headlines again in 2003 when she debuted Lost In Translation, a film she both wrote
and directed. With actor Bill Murray as her muse, the film tells the story of two Americans
strangers. In 2004, Coppola won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
The Holocaust is a subject that in most states are a required element of curriculum. Many choose to
teach a version that does not include the graphic nature and torture that Jews withstood. Instead of
give lecture or text based assignments many use movies to show the Holocaust, for their easier for
children to understand. Issues that could arise would be if they are able to understand that not every
story portrayed in a movie is an actual event and that some aspects are fictional while some are
truthful. It is essential that teachers ensure their students are aware of the function that the movies is
supposed to serve. In the Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, there are scenes that include extreme force
being used against Jews, at one point even being used against the little boy, Shmuel, for eating food
that was not meant for him. Another scene shows how the teacher meant for their homeschooling
was teaching them that there is no such thing as a good Jew and that they are all inherently bad.
Bruno fails to believe that a child, or anyone can be seen as bad when they have not done anything.
Bruno is the voice of the human conscious that is lacking from German perpetrators. A Jew is not
someone who is born evil and they are not all trying to bring about the destruction of the Aryan race.
The movie is very apt at showing the human side of the Holocaust and showing to others that pain
does not discriminate based on race or any socioeconomic category. At one point in the movie the

Director: Theodore Melfi
Synopsis: Hidden Figures is an American biographical drama based on true story nonfiction book
with same title written by Margot Lee Shetterly. It is about how the black female mathematicians,
during the segregation period of American History, helped NASA (National Aeronautics and Space
Administration) to launch successful space missions despite the racist work environment.
Review:
Theodore Melfi, a young writer–director along with writer Allison Schroeder, brings a great true
untold story of three unknown African American women, Katherine Goble, Mary Jackson, and
Dorothy Vaughan, to life played by some great talents along with great actors like Kevin Costner.

Marie Antoinette Essay
Marie Antoinette (2006), starring Kirsten Dunst, Jamie Dornan and Jason Schwartzman, is a
fictional movie biopic based on the life of famous French queen and one of the last monarchs before
the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette, wife of King Louis XVI. The film's director, Sofia
Coppola, has revealed that she stylized the historical figures in such a way as to make them seem
more humanised, and allow viewers to connect with the events, as well as admitting that she did not
wish for the film to simply focus on historical fact, stating that "It is not a lesson of history. It is an
interpretation documented, but carried by my desire for covering the subject differently." Several
critics have praised the film as being more of a satire than a ... Show more content on

The following is an excerpt of Marie Antoinette's letter to her mother after her wedding, which
clearly states Marie's happiness with France and her love for her husband: "What was really
affecting was the tenderness and earnestness of the poor people, who, in spite of the taxes with
which they are overwhelmed, were transported with joy at seeing us... Before we withdrew we
[Marie and Louis] kissed our hands to the people, which gave them great pleasure." These letters
also describe how Marie felt about the lower class peasants of France, who had treated her with
welcome and kindness, before they had shown signs of eventually turning on her after she pushed
the country further in debt. Overall, the inclusion of these letters in Marie Antoinette is an accurate
representation of Marie's feelings.
Marie Antoinette continued to incur the ire of the French by her lavish lifestyle, which highlighted
that the monarchy little understood the needs of their people. Whilst the peasants paid high taxes,
Marie Antoinette threw extravagant parties, ordered a constant supply of expensive clothing and
often gambled the French's money away unsuccessfully. In the film, several montage scenes of
Marie and other members of nobility accurately depict her attending parties, gambling and behaving
in an inappropriate manner. This is an entirely accurate depiction of Marie's lifestyle. The film also
accurately represents that Marie Antoinette having a model farm built – Hameau de la

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Essay
Meet me in Montauk
Have you ever wanted a bad memory erased? Is love erasable? These questions are attacked head on
in the wonderfully complex drama Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. After working together on
the film Human Nature, director Michael Gondry and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman discussed the
possibility whether or not they would have their memory erased of a bad relationship should the
opportunity present itself (dvdtalk). Out of that discussion a movie idea was formulated, pitched to a
studio, and a film was created showing the potential impact of doing so. Through Kaufman's
brilliant and strange storytelling, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind takes its audience on a

impulsive woman. Despite all appearances that the main characters are total opposites, a connection
between Joel and Clementine is sparked. It appears as though theirs is not a chance encounter and
they know one another.
Nearly two years after they meet, Joel goes to the library where Clementine works, and he is struck
that she doesn't appear to remember who he is, and she is now dating another guy. A saddened Joel
discovers that Clementine had him erased from her mind at Lacuna Inc., a firm people use if they
would like a relationship erased from their mind. Grief stricken, Joel in return schedules an
appointment to have Clementine erased from his mind. For the procedure Joel must gather any item
that refers back to Clementine, such as books, pictures, journals, gifts etc. The procedure works by
having the patient focus on the items they bring in, the technicians find the memory in his/her brain
and erase it.
A majority of the film takes place in the mind of Joel as he tries to find a way to hold on to his
memories of Clementine while the employees from Lacuna work to erase the memories. The
audience is magically placed into the mind of Joel as he is having his memory erased of Clementine.
The flashbacks begin, transporting the audience on a journey in their relationship but in reverse.

Donald Trump has recently made a decision to sign a travel ban, which bans seven countries from

Tillerson defended the travel ban, saying Trump is using "his rightful authority" to keep people safe.
They also used the quote "I fully expect this executive order to have the same uphill climb in the
courts that the previous version had," Schumer said. The director of ACLU's Immigrants, Omar

the travel ban will work well. They state a quote that Donald Trump said which was "the new order

Sourd Vs Cullinan
While Hollywood seems adamant to push the pace of its films to the absolute extreme, it is
refreshing to be able to sit and patiently enjoy a film that rejects this silly philosophy. With Sofia
Coppola's latest film, which earned her the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival
becoming only the second woman to do so in the process, one enters an almost entire different era of
filmmaking that, though superior in many ways, has become antiquated for many viewers. Now this
is not the first film adaptation of The Beguiled novel, written by Thomas Cullinan; the novel was
adapted in 1971 with Clint Eastwood in the starring role, but Sofia Coppola decided to give her own
spin at the novel and succeeded in extraordinary ways. This film tells the story of an injured Union
soldier (Colin Farrell) who is taken in by an all–girl boarding school in Virginia until he heals. Now

course, we are only halfway through the year and I'm sure other beautiful films will be released, but
if I had to bet today The Beguiled would not only be nominated for this prestigious award but it
would win. However, what makes the cinematography of this film great is not simply beautiful
framing and lighting, but it enhances the characters. The aesthetic is reminiscent of period films like
Barry Lyndon or Tess, two films whose cinematographers were awarded for their work on their
respective films. Truly every frame of this film looks as though it belongs to an impressionist
painting, and even the films that displayed cinematographic excellence of the past few years seem

Summary Of Made In America By Kilibrand
Kirsten Gillibrand presents herself as a person who wants to get her point across and someone that
is serious about their job. She always has a goal and tries to work toward that goal to achieve and
make things better for the community. Kirsten does a lot of campaign ads to get her point across and
to ensure the people that she is trying her best to help them. Her campaign ads are usually videos
she uses so help get a point across. One of the campaign ads I saw was a video called "Made in
America". In this video, Kirsten talked about where she was from and how she knows what the
people is going through so it is her job to help fix the situation. In the video, she showed her family
and expressed that upstate New York is where they call home so she sympathizes with the people on
the point. Also, she starts to talk about the economic priorities taxes so she tried to fix things by
making giving a property tax relief, she wrote an upstate job bill, and she voted to end tax breaks.

looking at that paragraph you should be able to see that she listed her number one priority is
rebuilding the economy. This was a good comparison because unlike many legislatures you usually

I can see that she is serious about her job and she wants to help fix what has been

Sofia Coppola's 'Lost In Adaptation'
Lost in Adaptation Whitewashing has cast white actors to play the role of historically non–white
characters since the birth of the film industry. From Mickey Rooney playing a Japanese landlord in
Breakfast at Tiffany's to Ghost in the Shell for casting Scarlett Johansson in an originally Asian role,
there is no doubt that this casting practice will be stopped. But why is whitewashing in Hollywood
still prevalent in Hollywood despite its disapproval?
Discussed in Corey Atad's article, "Lost in Adaptation," the director, Sofia Coppola is guilty for
gutting the historical and racial background in her The Beguiled. Based on the novel by Thomas P.
Cullinan (1966), and the adapted film by Don Siegel (1971), The Beguiled is a story set in the South
during the Civil War about an injured Union soldier who seduces the women at a school for
girls―which pitted them against each other to fight for the soldier's affection. Both the novel and
earlier film, featured a black enslaved maid Mattie and a mixed–race teenager Edwina; however, in
Coppola's film, she cuts Mattie out and recasts Edwina as a white school teacher. In his article, Atad
criticized Coppola for her excuses for cutting out the movie's two non–white characters. Coppola
explained one of her reasons to Buzzfeed News: "'the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Coppola many opportunities to include these strong black characters. In the novel, both Mattie and
Edwina were given first–person narrated chapters which depicted them as complex characters and
essential to the storyline. But instead of writing them as empowered women, Coppola removed them
entirely. Although, sympathetically thinking, if her intentions were genuine, why wouldn't Coppola
include these characters the way Cullinan wrote

Role Of Women In Movies
Films and televisions play an important role in shaping the way we think and understand our
society, history, and others in everyday lives. Nevertheless, the representations of women, the
working class, and racial and ethnic minorities in America are underrepresented in films and
televisions relative to their population, and are often portrayed negatively. The articles, "A Plea For
More Roseannes and Norma Rase: Addressing The Lack of Working–Class Female Characters on
American Screens." by Rachel Johnson, "Hollywood Asian Stereotypes." by Zak Keith, and
"Racism and the Aesthetic of Hyper Real Violence: Pulp Fiction and Other Visual Tragedies." by
Henry Giroux examine the power of films and televisions and its effects on women, the working
class, and racial and ethnic minorities in America.
There's a saying, Hollywood is a man world, but the problem goes beyond just Hollywood. The lack
of women representation in films, televisions, and general media is a decade–old problem. It's
becoming increasingly apparent as more and more women are shying away from being stay–at–
home moms and accepting the role of breadwinners for their households. According to the 2017
Hollywood Diversity Report by the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA,
women only claimed 29 percent of lead roles in top films in 2015. The underrepresentation of
women in media creates inequality in workplaces and difficulties in day to day lives as well as

Marie Antoinette A Villain
The film, Marie Antoinette was created in 2006 by Sofia Coppola in which it expresses her life
history through the use of travesty. Seeing that Marie Antoinette was commonly misunderstood for
her public image through the eyes of France, Sofia Coppola created the movie to present her in a
different perspective. She endeavors to try and present a whole other side to her in various ways; a
side that is more sympathetic and likeable.
Originally born in Austria, Marie Antoinette married off to (future King) Louis XVI of France. Soon
enough, she became a target of gossip and scandal; rumors of her included as being an Austrian spy
and much more. Her life in the public eye was quite difficult in which her sole purpose was to have

With it being defined as the collage or blending of different time periods and genre, it reveals the
fact that Marie Antoinette was indeed a teenager. She had no sense of the world beyond her until she
was put into a royal and first–rate world. There are various scenes that demonstrates how she is still
young and innocent. During the "I Want Candy" scene, a pair of blue Converse sneakers are shown
in the background while modern–pop music is playing. These ideas were most likely designed to
exaggerate the means of the film where those subtle indications of travesty were done intentionally.
This denotes how Marie Antoinette is nonetheless an adolescent that wants nothing to do with the

Clothing Choices In Historical Films
When a film claims to faithfully portray historical events, it becomes open to a variety of criticisms:
are the clothing choices appropriate for the time? What about choices in dialogue? And perhaps
most importantly, how accurately are the aforementioned events depicted? Generally speaking,
historical dramas are judged more harshly than other genres; as when real people and their
documented actions are subject to interpretation by the viewer, it is easy for the nuances and
subtleties of society many years ago to appear foreign to modern eyes. However, when a film
acknowledges the archaic nature of its subject and seeks to make it more accessible to newer eyes, it
must be careful to still remain true to historical events.
The 2006 film 'Marie Antoinette' (directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Kirsten Dunst in the titular
role) is one such film that sought to modernise its subject. A retelling of the life of France's most
famous queen, the film showcases the majority of Antoinette's life, from her ... Show more content

Although the film focuses more on the inherently stifling nature of the Pre–Revolutionary French
Court than on the rising political climate in the country, the fact remains that 'Marie Antoinette' is a
largely historically accurate film, and that those choices made by the director in fact work largely in
its favour towards its goal of telling a story – not of a country on fire with the prospect of
revolution, but of a young girl, caught between a child and an adult, and finally growing

Mona Lisa Smile-Then and Now
By watching Mona Lisa Smile, I noticed that life as a young adult during the 1950 's was similar
and very different than how life is now in 2005. In the 1950 's birth control was unheard of and
people made it out to be against the law whereas today, birth control is the most widely used drug to
prevent pregnancy. Within a typical 1950 's household, the soul responsibility of a wife was taking
care of her husband and kids and the husband's role was working for his family and keeping them
financially stable, which males still make the effort to do. Similarly, a wife's role today is also
providing financial stability and actually finding a job in the workforce. Moreover, women's roles in
the 1950 's differentiate the most from the roles in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As for men, they also got an education, got married , but entered the workforce. As a husband, their
responsibility was providing financial support and stability. Men were usually looked at as the
leader of the family. Also portrayed in Mona Lisa Smile was the concepts of power and resources.
In the movie, a husband is often seen as the leader in the family. In knowing that, a leader tends to
take on more responsibility and exert more power or in other words be the dominant figure in the
family. As for the concept of resources, husbands work for their family and bring in money
providing financial support. Similarly, women in the movie also show the concept of power in
taking control of their life and "playing" their role in society by getting an education and pursuing a
family. The last concept portrayed in the movie, Mona Lisa Smile, was the "ideal family." The ideal
family in the 1950 's was breadwinner–homemaker family. This "ideal family" was shown with a
wife, husband, and children. The husband worked to provide for his family and stay financially
stable. This was shown in the movie right after Becky got married and her husband was constantly
working. As a result to Becky's husband constantly working she begins to feel neglected and
cheated, however she is pushed to remain faithful and to serve her role as a wife and wait at home
for him. This goes to show that the wife in the family stays home taking care of her children, and

Melancholia Depression
Melancholia: Depression on Film Melancholia is defined as a mental condition characterized by
extreme depression, bodily complaints, and often hallucinations and delusions. Lars von Trier wrote
the film during his own episode of severe depression, and noted the tendency of the depressed to
remain peaceful during catastrophic events. To reflect this detached sense of reality, Lars Von Trier
rejected his rigidly realistic Dogma 95 principles for a dreamlike aesthetic that represents the
depressed mind of the main character Justine (played by Kirsten Dunst). He splits the film into two
parts with each part named after one of the main characters. Part one is named after Justine and
takes place during the night of her wedding reception. Justine ... Show more content on

The most graphic allusion is when Justine, in her wedding dress and with a bouquet of flowers, is
floating lifeless down a stream of water. This is a recreation of John Everett Millais painting entitled
Ophelia. Ophelia, a character from Shakespeare's Hamlet, is perhaps the most famous depressive in
all of literature. Justine embodies this image of being trapped and detached from loved ones,
through her emotionless and dead–eyed expressions. Justine and Claire both try to escape during the
film but they both fail; therefore, they are literally trapped on the mansion property, which gives an
increasing sense of hopelessness and dread. Richard Wagner's song, Prelude to Triston and Isolde, is
played as a haunting refrain throughout the film. The song mixes depression with beauty and desire,
like how the beautiful aesthetic of the film mixes with the hopelessness on screen. I appreciate that
Lars von Trier rejects end of the world movie clichés, and instead shows something deeper and
more poetic. The end of the world is experienced through the broken Justine and Claire, and not
shown through massive destructions of major cities and mass hysteria. The end of the world is a
fiercely intimate and unescaping event, instead of a time filled with last minute hook–ups and
hedonistic bucket–lists. It is interesting to watch how Justine and Claire react to the knowledge of
their impending

Hidden Figures Character Analysis
Hidden Figures was an emotional movie that showed the triumph of African Americans through the
racially segregated 1960s. In a space center in Virginia, three unlikely African American women
help launch a rocket into space with their genius minds. The film follows Katherine (Taraji Henson),
Dorothy (Octavia Spencer),and Mary (Janelle Monàe) as they progress in NASA's space program
and help to stand up against racism. All of the women begin as computer, or human calculators, but
each reach for the stars with larger aspirations. Katherine was moved up for work in a office, that
happened to be all whites. Dorothy is the "supervisor" of the computers and does whatever she can
to help the women there. Mary has hopes to be an engineer and the dedication to get there. The
everyday struggles these women face is horrific but they always stand up against the racism and
stick up for each other. Hidden Figures captures the racism against blacks in the 1960s but shows
the women who see the light at the end of the tunnel and keep fighting. Of Katherine, Mary, and
Dorothy it seemed because Katherine was moved to a white office area, she faced discrimination
every minute, from the bathroom, to coffee, and even stood up about the pay. Although it seems
racism is shown very clearly so many believe that the African Americans did not handle it well,
because sometimes they did not respect the white men and women there. Whenever segregation is
talked about, it seems bathrooms always come up.

Mary Arnold
For centuries, vampires have been depicted in various cultures and throughout literary history as
both bloodsuckers and vampire lovers. A good example is they've been portrayed as both monsters,
comedic villains, and romantic figures. The film industry has represented many incarnations of
vampires on the big screen for decades. Let's begin with the first vampire film, Nosferatu (monster),
up to the latest vampire film, Twilight (lover).
Along came, Nosferatu, an unofficial adaption of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and the first ever vampire
film released. Because the German studio, in charge of the film, could not obtain rights to the novel
from Stoker's widow, Florence Stoker, many elements of the respected novel were altered to avoid
plagiarism, including names and omitting characters. Dracula, for instance, became "Count Orlok",
and unlike Stoker's vampire, the creature in Nosferatu is horrendously repellant: its bald head

Marie Antoinette : Critique
In her 2006 film, director and writer Sofia Coppola follows the infamous French queen and Austrian
expat, Marie Antoinette (played by Kirsten Dunst), as she attempts to acclimate to her husband
Louis XVI's stringent court in the years leading up to the French Revolution. The film opens with
Marie, an Austrian princess and the daughter of the Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa traveling
to France to marry the dauphin who will one day acquire the illustrious title of King of France.
Teenaged Marie finds it difficult to conform to her new role as a French princess, and after her new
husband's courtiers begin to show blatant contempt towards the young dauphine when the
newlyweds' inability to produce an heir, due to Louis's inability to consummate their relationship, is
brought to light. Dejected due to her relationship with her husband, Marie finds solace in one thing:
spending vast quantities of money. With the economy of France continuing to follow a downward
spiral and Marie and other French nobles continuing to live lifestyles of exorbitant excess and
waste, the people's opinion of their Austrian Queen sours beyond the point of repair. Even after
Marie begins to fixate on her children, who took so long to be brought to fruition, instead of the vast
network of extravagant, profligate courtiers, and begins to lessen her lavish spending, the French
people had already decidedly marked all nobility as the instigators of France's financial debacle.

This memo is to provide an institutional analysis of my memorandum on firearm policy while
answering the four main questions you provided. First, I will explain how I approached this problem
by using frameworks from class. Second, I will analyze how the audience shaped my proposal and
whether they are likely to accept what I have outlined. Third, I will explain why my proposal work

provide arguments as to why this is the right memo at the right time for the right people.
1. I've used various frameworks from class to approach this issue. I applied concepts from Alinsky,
Cobb Elder, and lessons from Sinclair. I based my work on Alinsky theory of "limited wins. My
objective is to gradually implement firearm control policies. In this case my policy was limited to

this policy is implemented, other issues such as mentally ill people and potential domestic terrorist

Alinsky argues that power is built through establishing and shaping an organization to reach policy
objectives (Sinclair 2016 Lecture 5, s52). In other words, power is the reason for being of
organizations (Alinsky 1971). As part of this assignment I assumed that I worked for an established

Trump v. Hilary: Finding Clarity in the Chaos As a barely twenty–year–old junior at a sheltered
private college, I have to confess that it's been very hard to conceptualize and realize the severity of
the 2016 election. What started off as a race of what seemed like a million different candidates, the
polls quickly zoned in on two candidates we could've never predicted to be the voting citizens' final
choice. It's both overwhelming, and simple, deceitful, and truthful – this election seems to be full of
contradictions and half truths, and the opaque nature of a once seemingly transparent media
complicates matters further in an election that seems convoluted even on paper. Along with the

Human Rights Speech Analysis
Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton former First Lady of the United States, gave a phenomenal twenty–
minute speech that would change the rights for woman everlastingly. The phenomenal speech is
entitled "Woman's Rights are Human Rights," and was delivered to the word on September fifth,
nineteen ninety–five. The speech was held at the Fourth World Conference in Beijing, China. The
phenomenal speech was an enormous milestone in the fight for women's rights around the world.
Clinton's speech was motivational, empowering, and impactful for her audience who listened to her
and for woman of every race and nationality. In fact, the speech is extremely well known over
twenty years later. Clinton's twenty–minute powerful speech affected women's role in politics,
domestic violence against woman, and woman's role in the bored room. According to Jana
Kasperkevic, a digital reporter from Marketplace, based in New York, "During the 104th session of
US Congress, which ran from 1995 to 1997, 50 women were elected into the 435–member House of
Representatives and nine into the 100–seat Senate" (Kasperkevic). Clinton's twenty–minute speech
made an extraordinary impact on woman in politics forever. Furthermore, As of January third, two
thousand seventeen, "during the 114th session of congress, there are 104 woman who have been
elected to represent American voters – 84 in the House and 20 in the Senate" (Kasperkevic). Today,
woman can become president of the United States, politicians, or even senators. This is an
extremely amazing accomplishment considering just 100 years ago woman did not have the right to
vote or voice their opinion in politics. In 1920 woman were allowed to vote for the first time in
American history. For woman to receive the right to vote it took "activist and reformers nearly 100
years to win suffrage rights for woman" (History dot com). Clinton made a positive affect for
woman all around the world because of her twenty–minute speech. Additionally, she also made
dreams for woman come true. Kristin Gillibrand who is now a US senator from New York, wrote
"she was inspired by Clinton's speech in 1995 and pursued her dreams of becoming a US senator"

Has anyone ever considered how much of an input the entertainment industry has on our society? In
the article "The Power of the Media to Shape Perceptions of Mental Illness" Mullins states, "The
VARIOUS forms of mass media are powerful mechanisms that can divide, change or shape public
opinion" (Mullins pp. 34). That is an incredibly heavy statement and can sometimes be hard to
believe that the media has that much of an influence on how society perceives things. Derogatory
terms such as 'psycho', 'disturbed', 'retard', and 'crazy' are words that society commonly relates with
the mentally ill. Such as the movie Psycho, it tells the story of how a person with mental illness can
be seen as a danger to society – that is not always true, but yet the mass media decides that is what
the mentally ill look like. Now there are movies that actually portray mental illness in a positive
manner, such as A Beautiful Mind (2001) and Melancholia (2011). In A Beautiful Mind, Russell
Crowe portrays a Princeton University Professor who struggles with paranoid schizophrenia. Crowe
portrayed it to such a great extent and in such a positive light. In Melancholia, Kirsten Dunst

negative emotion all the time. Dunst performance was incredible and accurately depicted mental

Comparing Gender And The Media
3.2 Gender and the Media.
3.2.1 The portrayal of men in films
There are a variety of men portrayed in modern films: ranging from the most common "manly man"
to the "goofball" to the slowly emerging more sensitive man: one who is more comfortable with
stereotypically "female" emotions such as sadness. Men in films such as "The Hangover" fall into
the "lad" category, characterized by their immaturity, and adolescent behavior (Moore 1998:209).
Men are also portrayed as the "warrior", or "hero" in films such as "Saving Private Ryan", or "San
Andreas respectively. Both films demonstrate male actors in traditionally male roles, saving the day,
often rescuing women (more so in the latter than the former). Men are also portrayed as "players" or

feminists due to the portrayal of women as not only objects for the male to obtain, but also because
of the negative light it shines on women.
3.2.3 The "narcissistic" man
The narcissist is characterised by status – all the right labels, the best grooming, and the perfect wife
(Fourie 2008:313). Many men in media are portrayed in this light, such as Don Draper from "Mad
Men" who only wore the most expensive suits – both as a status symbol, and as a means of
intimidating and impressing those in his field. The narcissist is also used often in adverts, such as
George Clooney posing for Nespresso – these ads appeal to the narcissist who will view a Nespresso
machine not only as a status symbol, but to make themselves appear more attractive through the
acquisition of the machine.
3.2.4 The "yuppie" man

many vampire movies over the years, long before they became the popular pop–culture genre they

His cinematography "creates an exceptionally inviting, varied look for this nocturnal story, and
special visual effects are smoothly integrated into the action. The makeup that adds pale eyes,
ghostly pallor and tiny blue veins to the principals' faces manages to create a frisson of danger
without marring the actors' attractiveness" (Maslin). Rousselot used dark–lensing, a way to attain
low key shots and thus created a huge contrast to the sets and costumes (Maslin). This made the
characters seem as though they were the only important things in the otherwise dark and gloomy
shots.
Mise–en–scene
The mise–en–scene of Interview with the Vampire is relatively theatrical in nature. Long shots are
used for much of the movie and the intense close–up shots are retained for the extremely moving
victimization scenes where the camera closes in on the eyes of the vampire attacking its victim and
what the vampire is feeling thru its eyes (Rice). Also because of the darkness of most of the settings
within the movie and the lushness of the immediate sets and costuming one gets the feeling of the
importance of the characters and where they are at. The character proxemics and intimate distance
of the shot when Claudia curls up with Louis in his coffin, shows the feelings and morality that
Louis is fighting so hard to hang onto in his immortality and the loss of the innocence Claudia has
accepted.

Sex, Marriage, And Sexual Commitments

  • 1. Sex, Marriage, And Sexual Commitments Sex and love have changed the last few decades immensely; changing how people look at dating, marriage, and sexual commitments. Definition of dating has changed from generation to generation. Marriage has also changed and to the point that many people are putting marriage off longer. From these changes there has been a new culture that has formed. The hookup culture is the lack of commitment to a single partner, but having flings with one or more people. Dating has not been around but for nearly a hundred years. Paula England, who started the research of the hookup culture using a college survey, stated in her paper for The Family in Transition, "...the invention of dating started in the 1920s and was helped along by the automobile and commercial sports, like movie theaters, where youth would go." This gave young people more of freedom to enjoy themselves with other people of the same age. Dating was not a real cause as people had marriages arranged for class status. In the movie Mona Lisa Smile the character Betty, portrayed by Kirsten Dunst, married her college boyfriend. They mainly married as it was expected of them from the pressure of their family for their rise in class status. This is seen throughout history in marriages but has changed over the last several decades. Betty and Spencer, her husband, who were allowed to date and able to see if they were a perfect fit. Unlike that young people looking for a match had to be under supervision. "...young men often had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Rebel Without A Cause Pop Culture Midterm paper: Pop Culture: Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll. Rebel Without a Cause led way to the first on–screen teenage bad boy. James Dean plays a disgruntled teenager (Jim) is unsatisfied with life and the patriarchy of following the rules. He hates that his dad lets his mom run the household and caters to her versus the traditional father makes all the rules stance. Rebel Without a Cause allows for a deep consideration of what the stereotypical 1950s teenager felt. The movie looks at teenage relationships with the older generation and exclaims the disdain both parties share for one another during the tremulous coming of age time. Jim's parents are not sure how to raise him the best way, and he loses respect for them judging on how they interact with him and each other. The other main teenage characters within the film are Judy portrayed by Natalie Wood, and John "Plato" Crawford portrayed by Sal Mineo. Natalie Wood's character is probably reminiscent of what many young female teenagers went through at the time. She deals with gender issues and must find her way as a developing young woman when her parents seem clueless to her concerns and struggles. Her father does not know how to guide her through this next stage of life and instead turns her away which causes her to feel bad about herself. Her Mother has no real clue on how to help either of them as well. Plato is also a striking character within the story that is utterly confused and has no real guidance in life. All three ... • 3. Movie Review : The Virgin Suicides Sofia Coppola is the daughter of the famous director Francis Ford Coppola who made The Godfather films. She is a producer, director, screenwriter and actress. Coppola directed and wrote the 1999 film The Virgin Suicides. Her directorial work for Lost in Translation won an Oscar. She became the first American woman to win the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2010. Coppola made brief appearances in her father 's films throughout her childhood. Acting, however, would not be Sofia 's strong suit. As seen in her performance in the third instalment of The Godfather. She was cast at the last minute as Mary Corleone, Coppola was ruthlessly panned by critics for her stiff and false portrayal. Following this, Sofia retreated from the spotlight, enrolling in the fine arts program at the California Institute of Arts, concentrating on her photography, experimenting with costume and fashion design. In 1993, however, she began writing the screenplay adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides ' The Virgin Suicides. Starring James Woods, Kathleen Turner and Kirsten Dunst, the subtle, haunting film was an overwhelming critical and art house success. Coppola made headlines again in 2003 when she debuted Lost In Translation, a film she both wrote and directed. With actor Bill Murray as her muse, the film tells the story of two Americans strangers. In 2004, Coppola won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film. Sofia Coppola 's next film wasn 't as universally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas The Holocaust is a subject that in most states are a required element of curriculum. Many choose to teach a version that does not include the graphic nature and torture that Jews withstood. Instead of give lecture or text based assignments many use movies to show the Holocaust, for their easier for children to understand. Issues that could arise would be if they are able to understand that not every story portrayed in a movie is an actual event and that some aspects are fictional while some are truthful. It is essential that teachers ensure their students are aware of the function that the movies is supposed to serve. In the Boy in the Stripped Pajamas, there are scenes that include extreme force being used against Jews, at one point even being used against the little boy, Shmuel, for eating food that was not meant for him. Another scene shows how the teacher meant for their homeschooling was teaching them that there is no such thing as a good Jew and that they are all inherently bad. Bruno fails to believe that a child, or anyone can be seen as bad when they have not done anything. Bruno is the voice of the human conscious that is lacking from German perpetrators. A Jew is not someone who is born evil and they are not all trying to bring about the destruction of the Aryan race. The movie is very apt at showing the human side of the Holocaust and showing to others that pain does not discriminate based on race or any socioeconomic category. At one point in the movie the ... • 7. Marie Antoinette Essay Marie Antoinette (2006), starring Kirsten Dunst, Jamie Dornan and Jason Schwartzman, is a fictional movie biopic based on the life of famous French queen and one of the last monarchs before the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette, wife of King Louis XVI. The film's director, Sofia Coppola, has revealed that she stylized the historical figures in such a way as to make them seem more humanised, and allow viewers to connect with the events, as well as admitting that she did not wish for the film to simply focus on historical fact, stating that "It is not a lesson of history. It is an interpretation documented, but carried by my desire for covering the subject differently." Several critics have praised the film as being more of a satire than a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The following is an excerpt of Marie Antoinette's letter to her mother after her wedding, which clearly states Marie's happiness with France and her love for her husband: "What was really affecting was the tenderness and earnestness of the poor people, who, in spite of the taxes with which they are overwhelmed, were transported with joy at seeing us... Before we withdrew we [Marie and Louis] kissed our hands to the people, which gave them great pleasure." These letters also describe how Marie felt about the lower class peasants of France, who had treated her with welcome and kindness, before they had shown signs of eventually turning on her after she pushed the country further in debt. Overall, the inclusion of these letters in Marie Antoinette is an accurate representation of Marie's feelings. Marie Antoinette continued to incur the ire of the French by her lavish lifestyle, which highlighted that the monarchy little understood the needs of their people. Whilst the peasants paid high taxes, Marie Antoinette threw extravagant parties, ordered a constant supply of expensive clothing and often gambled the French's money away unsuccessfully. In the film, several montage scenes of Marie and other members of nobility accurately depict her attending parties, gambling and behaving in an inappropriate manner. This is an entirely accurate depiction of Marie's lifestyle. The film also accurately represents that Marie Antoinette having a model farm built – Hameau de la ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These questions are attacked head on in the wonderfully complex drama Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. After working together on the film Human Nature, director Michael Gondry and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman discussed the possibility whether or not they would have their memory erased of a bad relationship should the opportunity present itself (dvdtalk). Out of that discussion a movie idea was formulated, pitched to a studio, and a film was created showing the potential impact of doing so. Through Kaufman's brilliant and strange storytelling, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind takes its audience on a journey challenging us to ask: what would we do ... Despite all appearances that the main characters are total opposites, a connection between Joel and Clementine is sparked. It appears as though theirs is not a chance encounter and they know one another. Nearly two years after they meet, Joel goes to the library where Clementine works, and he is struck that she doesn't appear to remember who he is, and she is now dating another guy. A saddened Joel discovers that Clementine had him erased from her mind at Lacuna Inc., a firm people use if they would like a relationship erased from their mind. Grief stricken, Joel in return schedules an appointment to have Clementine erased from his mind. For the procedure Joel must gather any item that refers back to Clementine, such as books, pictures, journals, gifts etc. The procedure works by having the patient focus on the items they bring in, the technicians find the memory in his/her brain and erase it. A majority of the film takes place in the mind of Joel as he tries to find a way to hold on to his memories of Clementine while the employees from Lacuna work to erase the memories. The travel ban is a very controversial topic. Many news stations write about it, but show bias either defending it or are against it. The news caster's are "Fox News," "New York Times," and a video of John Kelly all show bias towards a side of the controversy. Fox News shows bias for the travel ban. Fox News uses quotes from many people in favor of the travel ban they do not use any that are against and if they do they rebuttal it. Tillerson defended the travel ban, saying Trump is using "his rightful authority" to keep people safe. They also used the quote "I fully expect this executive order to have the same uphill climb in the courts that the previous version had," Schumer said. The director of ACLU's Immigrants, Omar Jadwat agreed. These two quotes represent people sharing their opinions on how good it is and that the travel ban will work well. • 11. Sourd Vs Cullinan While Hollywood seems adamant to push the pace of its films to the absolute extreme, it is refreshing to be able to sit and patiently enjoy a film that rejects this silly philosophy. With Sofia Coppola's latest film, which earned her the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival becoming only the second woman to do so in the process, one enters an almost entire different era of filmmaking that, though superior in many ways, has become antiquated for many viewers. Now this is not the first film adaptation of The Beguiled novel, written by Thomas Cullinan; the novel was adapted in 1971 with Clint Eastwood in the starring role, but Sofia Coppola decided to give her own spin at the novel and succeeded in extraordinary ways. This film tells the story of an injured Union soldier (Colin Farrell) who is taken in by an all–girl boarding school in Virginia until he heals. Now the film ... However, what makes the cinematography of this film great is not simply beautiful framing and lighting, but it enhances the characters. The aesthetic is reminiscent of period films like Barry Lyndon or Tess, two films whose cinematographers were awarded for their work on their respective films. From Mickey Rooney playing a Japanese landlord in Breakfast at Tiffany's to Ghost in the Shell for casting Scarlett Johansson in an originally Asian role, there is no doubt that this casting practice will be stopped. But why is whitewashing in Hollywood still prevalent in Hollywood despite its disapproval? Discussed in Corey Atad's article, "Lost in Adaptation," the director, Sofia Coppola is guilty for gutting the historical and racial background in her The Beguiled. Based on the novel by Thomas P. Cullinan (1966), and the adapted film by Don Siegel (1971), The Beguiled is a story set in the South during the Civil War about an injured Union soldier who seduces the women at a school for girls―which pitted them against each other to fight for the soldier's affection. Both the novel and earlier film, featured a black enslaved maid Mattie and a mixed–race teenager Edwina; however, in Coppola's film, she cuts Mattie out and recasts Edwina as a white school teacher. In his article, Atad criticized Coppola for her excuses for cutting out the movie's two non–white characters. Coppola explained one of her reasons to Buzzfeed News: "'the ... What about choices in dialogue? And perhaps most importantly, how accurately are the aforementioned events depicted? Generally speaking, historical dramas are judged more harshly than other genres; as when real people and their documented actions are subject to interpretation by the viewer, it is easy for the nuances and subtleties of society many years ago to appear foreign to modern eyes. However, when a film acknowledges the archaic nature of its subject and seeks to make it more accessible to newer eyes, it must be careful to still remain true to historical events. The 2006 film 'Marie Antoinette' (directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Kirsten Dunst in the titular role) is one such film that sought to modernise its subject. Melancholia Depression Melancholia: Depression on Film Melancholia is defined as a mental condition characterized by extreme depression, bodily complaints, and often hallucinations and delusions. Lars von Trier wrote the film during his own episode of severe depression, and noted the tendency of the depressed to remain peaceful during catastrophic events. To reflect this detached sense of reality, Lars Von Trier rejected his rigidly realistic Dogma 95 principles for a dreamlike aesthetic that represents the depressed mind of the main character Justine (played by Kirsten Dunst). Justine embodies this image of being trapped and detached from loved ones, through her emotionless and dead–eyed expressions. Justine and Claire both try to escape during the film but they both fail; therefore, they are literally trapped on the mansion property, which gives an increasing sense of hopelessness and dread. Richard Wagner's song, Prelude to Triston and Isolde, is played as a haunting refrain throughout the film. The song mixes depression with beauty and desire, like how the beautiful aesthetic of the film mixes with the hopelessness on screen. I appreciate that Lars von Trier rejects end of the world movie clichés, and instead shows something deeper and more poetic. The end of the world is experienced through the broken Justine and Claire, and not shown through massive destructions of major cities and mass hysteria. Jeff Nichols Midnight Special "Midnight Special", the latest cinematic exposure by the adroit filmmaker, Jeff Nichols, is a passable cocktail that contains drama, sci–fi, and thriller in unequal proportions. Mr. Nichols' fourth motion picture features Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst, and the young Jaeden Lieberher, in the leading roles. This is their first collaboration with the director, except for the earnest Mr. Shannon who also starred in his other three dramas – "Shotgun Stories", "Mud", and "Take Shelter", whose scripts I consider more satisfying than the object of this review. Calling to mind Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (conceptually), Shyamalan's "Signs" (visually), and one of the Italo Calvino's invisible cities ... Alton is naturally sweet and extra sensitive (he can replicate in real time what they're saying on the radio) but also has the power of causing massive destruction when frightened or in danger. During the day, he uses blue goggles in an attempt to protect his eyes, which occasionally emit a spectrum of bright light. However, he's getting sicker each day, and this is the time to act. Meanwhile, the FBI starts an investigation, relying on their smartest and trustful agent, Paul Sevier (Driver), who becomes essential in the communication with Alton, while the pastor sends two men to find Roy's whereabouts and bring Alton back to the ranch. Not so enrapturing as it promised, "Midnight Special" instigates you to imagine much more than what is really given. Mr. Nichols had some difficulties in giving the best sequence to the mystery set in the first half while the religion connotations of the story felt a bit like a sham. • 32. Trump V. Hilary Case Study Trump v. Hilary: Finding Clarity in the Chaos As a barely twenty–year–old junior at a sheltered private college, I have to confess that it's been very hard to conceptualize and realize the severity of the 2016 election. What started off as a race of what seemed like a million different candidates, the polls quickly zoned in on two candidates we could've never predicted to be the voting citizens' final choice. It's both overwhelming, and simple, deceitful, and truthful – this election seems to be full of contradictions and half truths, and the opaque nature of a once seemingly transparent media complicates matters further in an election that seems convoluted even on paper. Along with the legislative branch, the media itself has turned into a monster we never thought we'd have to wrangle. We are surrounded by propaganda, caricatures, and cartoons everywhere we turn, especially in print media like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By observing two separate covers of The New Yorker depicting Hilary Rodham Clinton and Donald John Trump in two very different lights, we can explore the volatility of the election as revealed through the overly–satirical (yet still somber) manipulation of this peculiar electoral race. As with most electoral races, the media takes on the role of portraying images of candidates to the public. The motives behind these conscious, deliberate decisions vary greatly, but the results are always interesting to dissect. Starting with the June 20, 2016 issue of The New Yorker, we see a depiction of Secretary Clinton mid–fight, sitting in the corner of a boxing ring (appropriate following the death of Muhammad Ali), sporting her confident, signature grin despite all the ... • 33. Human Rights Speech Analysis Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton former First Lady of the United States, gave a phenomenal twenty– minute speech that would change the rights for woman everlastingly. The phenomenal speech is entitled "Woman's Rights are Human Rights," and was delivered to the word on September fifth, nineteen ninety–five. The speech was held at the Fourth World Conference in Beijing, China. The phenomenal speech was an enormous milestone in the fight for women's rights around the world. Clinton's speech was motivational, empowering, and impactful for her audience who listened to her and for woman of every race and nationality. In fact, the speech is extremely well known over twenty years later. Clinton's twenty–minute powerful speech affected women's role in politics, domestic violence against woman, and woman's role in the bored room. According to Jana Kasperkevic, a digital reporter from Marketplace, based in New York, "During the 104th session of US Congress, which ran from 1995 to 1997, 50 women were elected into the 435–member House of Representatives and nine into the 100–seat Senate" (Kasperkevic). Clinton's twenty–minute speech made an extraordinary impact on woman in politics forever. Furthermore, As of January third, two thousand seventeen, "during the 114th session of congress, there are 104 woman who have been elected to represent American voters – 84 in the House and 20 in the Senate" (Kasperkevic). Today, woman can become president of the United States, politicians, or even senators. This is an extremely amazing accomplishment considering just 100 years ago woman did not have the right to vote or voice their opinion in politics. In 1920 woman were allowed to vote for the first time in American history. For woman to receive the right to vote it took "activist and reformers nearly 100 years to win suffrage rights for woman" (History dot com). Clinton made a positive affect for woman all around the world because of her twenty–minute speech. Additionally, she also made dreams for woman come true. Kristin Gillibrand who is now a US senator from New York, wrote "she was inspired by Clinton's speech in 1995 and pursued her dreams of becoming a US senator" (Gillibrnd). Mental Illness: Article Analysis In the second season of American Horror Story called Asylum there is this mental institution where the ill and well are treated the same – inhumanely, by a nun that is crazier than Nurse Ratched. Shows like this have surely scared some into not seeking treatment, for the sake of being afraid of how they will be treated by their providers as well as how they will be seen as since society has portrayed the mentally ill in such a way as this. In the article, "Madness in the Method", it also talks about and explains the Americans With Disabilities Act and the loopholes of it by saying, "The Americans With Disabilities Act protects the mentally ill from discrimination by employers, but there's a catch: disclosure. This seems reasonable; if an employer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Has anyone ever considered how much of an input the entertainment industry has on our society? In the article "The Power of the Media to Shape Perceptions of Mental Illness" Mullins states, "The VARIOUS forms of mass media are powerful mechanisms that can divide, change or shape public opinion" (Mullins pp. 34). That is an incredibly heavy statement and can sometimes be hard to believe that the media has that much of an influence on how society perceives things. Derogatory terms such as 'psycho', 'disturbed', 'retard', and 'crazy' are words that society commonly relates with the mentally ill. Such as the movie Psycho, it tells the story of how a person with mental illness can be seen as a danger to society – that is not always true, but yet the mass media decides that is what the mentally ill look like. Now there are movies that actually portray mental illness in a positive manner, such as A Beautiful Mind (2001) and Melancholia (2011). In A Beautiful Mind, Russell Crowe portrays a Princeton University Professor who struggles with paranoid schizophrenia. Crowe portrayed it to such a great extent and in such a positive light. In Melancholia, Kirsten Dunst portrays a woman with severe depression. This movie shows that some people who experience depression can sometimes be very calm during intense situations, rather than showing extreme negative emotion all the time. Dunst performance was incredible and accurately depicted mental illness in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Comparing Gender And The Media 3.2 Gender and the Media. 3.2.1 The portrayal of men in films There are a variety of men portrayed in modern films: ranging from the most common "manly man" to the "goofball" to the slowly emerging more sensitive man: one who is more comfortable with stereotypically "female" emotions such as sadness. Men in films such as "The Hangover" fall into the "lad" category, characterized by their immaturity, and adolescent behavior (Moore 1998:209). Men are also portrayed as the "warrior", or "hero" in films such as "Saving Private Ryan", or "San Andreas respectively. Both films demonstrate male actors in traditionally male roles, saving the day, often rescuing women (more so in the latter than the former). Men are also portrayed as "players" or ... (Wikipedia) This trope is particularly disliked amongst feminists due to the portrayal of women as not only objects for the male to obtain, but also because of the negative light it shines on women. 3.2.3 The "narcissistic" man The narcissist is characterised by status – all the right labels, the best grooming, and the perfect wife (Fourie 2008:313). Many men in media are portrayed in this light, such as Don Draper from "Mad Men" who only wore the most expensive suits – both as a status symbol, and as a means of intimidating and impressing those in his field. The narcissist is also used often in adverts, such as George Clooney posing for Nespresso – these ads appeal to the narcissist who will view a Nespresso machine not only as a status symbol, but to make themselves appear more attractive through the acquisition of the machine. 3.2.4 The "yuppie" man The Yuppie must have. (Mort 1996:172). Yuppies are often portrayed as young, single men who make it their mission to have the best of everything – designer suits, sports cars, watches. They ... Interview with the Vampire Paper Heather Bishop Professor Radek FLM 2009–100 2 December 2011 Summary Applications Paper: Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles I have enjoyed many vampire movies over the years, long before they became the popular pop–culture genre they have become due to the success of The Twilight Saga films. One movie I have enjoyed viewing many times since its debut in 1994 is Interview with the Vampire. This film is an adaptation of the book Interview with the Vampire written by Anne Rice in 1973 and published in 1976. The movie was directed by Neil Jordan who also co–wrote the script with Anne Rice. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles is the story of Louis (Brad Pitt), portraying a depressed man, as he tells of his life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His cinematography "creates an exceptionally inviting, varied look for this nocturnal story, and special visual effects are smoothly integrated into the action. The makeup that adds pale eyes, ghostly pallor and tiny blue veins to the principals' faces manages to create a frisson of danger without marring the actors' attractiveness" (Maslin). Rousselot used dark–lensing, a way to attain low key shots and thus created a huge contrast to the sets and costumes (Maslin). This made the characters seem as though they were the only important things in the otherwise dark and gloomy shots. Mise–en–scene The mise–en–scene of Interview with the Vampire is relatively theatrical in nature. Long shots are used for much of the movie and the intense close–up shots are retained for the extremely moving victimization scenes where the camera closes in on the eyes of the vampire attacking its victim and what the vampire is feeling thru its eyes (Rice). Also because of the darkness of most of the settings within the movie and the lushness of the immediate sets and costuming one gets the feeling of the importance of the characters and where they are at. The character proxemics and intimate distance of the shot when Claudia curls up with Louis in his coffin, shows the feelings and morality that Louis is fighting so hard to hang onto in his immortality and the loss of the innocence Claudia has accepted. An additional thing that fans would want to know is how Stan Lee did did all the villains and how did he give them so much power that will make them really strong. The villains that the directors use in the movie are common villains for example, Green Goblin, Lizard, Rhino, Hobgoblin, Electro, Sand Man, Venom and Dr. Octopus.
