Why Some Feminists Give The Movement A Bad Rap
Why Some Feminists Give the Movement a Bad Rap:
A Response Catherine Newman's "I Do Not" Patriarchy is defined as a social system in which males
are the primary authority figures central to social organization (www.wikipedia.com). This is the
term used by author Catherine Newman to describe marriage. Being so bitter and cold about
marriage seems to me, to be coming from a cold–hearted, feminist point of view. To not be so callus
and sexist could open one to a new world of loving experiences.
Author Catherine Newman is an unwed mother, who in this piece of writing explains why she won't
get married. Newman states in her article I Do Not. Why I Won't Marry, "Because marriage is about
handing the woman off, like a baton, from her father to her husband. Also known as "traffic in
women," this is how men have historically solidified their economic connections to other men..."
(61) I have to disagree with this statement. This symbolism in American culture represents, in my
experiences, the father handing the woman off to the groom entrusting him to love and protect the
bride as he has her whole life. This statement from Newman gives me the sense that she is a
feminist, only seeing that the man "has control" and not taking marriage for its intended meaning.
The outdated idea about the idea of the "embarrassing detail of the bride's family shelling out the ten
or fifty thousand dollars for the wedding itself"(62). It's a far stretch to better her position on why
she won't marry.

Divorce In The 20th Century
The 20th century revolutionized the amount of divorces in the United States of America has ever
filed for. Certainly in the year of 1980 "more than 40 percent of the marriages made that year would
end in divorce. Expressed as a 5.3 persons per 1,000 persons in 1983 were divorced; in 1950, the
ratio was 2.6 per 1,000" ("Divorce Increase"). Some marriages have certainly over time, continue to
fail and result in a divorce. There are multiple reasons as to why marriages result in failures.
However, due to the high demand of divorces, it's a shock to us why it is happening and what
happened in the 20th century that resulted in this data. The Industrial Revolution, women having
much more power and drastic changes in society has a huge contribution ... Show more content on

According to the article, "Divorce Increases by Half," they claim that in the beginning of
Christianity, marriage was very sacred and no human could ever ruin a marriage because marriage is
considered as an inviolate contract before God (para 2). This belief of the church has strictly
forbidden a married couple to get a divorce. The divorce rate was very low and children were likely
to feel compassion among their parents' because they were there for them both. In comparison, other
countries in the early period were refused as well to divorce because of the church's beliefs on
marriage. In the 1500s, European courts started to allow divorce upon couples only if they can prove
that their partner has committed adultery, cruelty and/or desertion ("Divorce" West). Although, other
countries started to be more lenient toward divorce, they still had a difficult time to receive a
divorce. Such as in England, only about 229 divorces were given to couples who wanted a divorce
between 1669 to 1850 ("Divorce" West). The extreme change in society's view among marriage has
changed it all. In today's society, divorce can be easily obtained, no one can be at fault, which the
No–Fault Divorce states. This law can cause the procedure to go quicker and smoother that the
couple can abandon their marriage when the beginning sign of distaste from one another occurs
("Family Law"). The change of law toward divorce has impacted the views of the church that allows
religious couples to get a divorce once they feel that the marriage is not going well. No one can stop
them as well as fixed their situation that can raise the divorce rates even

Social and Reproductive Monogamy in Vole Rats
Social and Reproductive Monogamy in Vole Rats
Reproductive monogamy is defined as an exclusive sexual relationship between a female and a male
based on their sexual interactions. Social Monogamy refers to male and female's social living
arrangement without sexual interactions. It refers to the living patterns, raising offsprings, and
obtaining food. Monogamy is common in birds, but also occurs in invertebrates. Why would a male
mammal choose to mate with one female when he can mate with more than one? Why would the
male stay around instead of finding another female to live with? Many researchers have attempted to
answer this question of why some mammals prefer monogamy over polygamy. Vole rats, one of the
species that perform monogamous mating, demonstrate pair boding. Male and female pairs of vole
rats have been observed together over several months, and the males stay with females even when
the female is not reproductively active. A typical vole family in the wild is almost always consisted
of one male, one female, and their offspring. In addition, unlike other species in which females are
the only ones taking care of the offspring, vole rats share parental roles and even build nests
together. Because they show these monogamous behaviors, they have served as a good
species/model to learn about monogamy for neuroscientists. In this paper, monogamy, specifically in
vole rats, will be explained along with its proximate and ultimate causes of this adaptation.

Psy 230 Week 2
One of the important things that I learned from Demo and Fine chapter 4 and 5 is about the societal
views of marriage and divorce. By reading chapter 4, it has been clear to me that marriage still
reserved as the highest desired institution. However, I also shocked with the fact that marriage rates
are higher for more educated men and women compared to prior generations that are lower for more
educated individuals. About divorce, it is good to hear that the negative stigma associated with
divorce is reduced over time even though it does not seem that it has become positive in the recent
years.
Besides, I also learned that even though marriage is popular, the social norms governing marriage
have become weaker. This happens may be because there is a change from institutional to
companionate marriage and also there is a larger emphasis on marriage meeting individualistic and
self–fulfilling need. People hold many expectations on marriage. People expect marriage can help ...

However, there are still regional differences in settlement and custody even though all of the states
have some form of no–fault divorce. Besides, divorce procedures have become simpler and divorce
is once again a personal decision. Nevertheless, the divorce processes are still complicated
especially if the married couple have children.
Moreover, I learned about the internal emotional and psychological dimensions of divorce
introduced by Reva Wiseman. By reading this, it shows that process of separation can extends
deeply into the psyche. Wiseman said that there are five stages of divorce–denial, loss and
depression, anger and ambivalence, reorientation of lifestyle and identity and acceptance and
integration. This view of divorce let us see and learn about the process of crisis in individuals' mind.
It also shows how emotions can shift accompanying

Polygamy in Canada Essay
Within Canada we have a generous amount of freedom but this leads to the abuse of our system.
This is especially true with regards to polygamy in Bountiful, BC. Because women are susceptible
to mental abuse in polygamist relationships it should continue to be illegal in Canada. If this law is
in enforced it would help women to be freed of the oppression caused by male domination,
eliminate the need for women to suppress feelings that conflict with the ideals of the polygamy life,
and aid in avoiding depression resulting from the build–up of concealed feelings.
Polygamy is the case in which a man or a woman has multiple spouses. One branch of polygamy is
termed "polygyny", which is when "one man is married to several wives" (Zeitzen 3). ... Show more

Providing such controls permits women from becoming independent: to think emotionally and
mentally development. Of course here an opponent might validly argue that men must take the
dominant role and provide authority due to the idea: "women report more intense and persistent
anger than do men" (88:1546). However, even though it is true that women are more susceptible to
revealing their emotions; women are just as capable as men to run their lives in a constructive,
healthy way. Polygynist men have hidden behind the blanket of religion to justify their male
supremacy and dismantle the strength and equality of women in a whole.
Many women in polygynist relationships tend to hide their feelings, but why? Daphne Braham
writes "[women are] taught to suppress [these] emotions and to put all their energy into obeying the
word of their prophet." (17) Therefore, any thoughts of resentment, jealousy or so forth are not
acceptable. When a man has so many wives they have no choice but to be submissive if they want to
avoid being left out; because the husband can turn to another one of his wives to get what he desires.

Women in America," she notes a report from a second wife who felt insignificant in her polygamous
marriage due to the lack of attention

Practice Ethical Non-Polyamory
As a therapist who often works with non–traditional lifestyles, I get a lot of calls from distressed
clients struggling to navigate new relationship structures. The most common of these calls is from
someone who thought they were in a monogamous relationship until their long term partner
suddenly changed the game by unilaterally declaring the relationship open, their orientation
polyamorous or something like that. To be clear, (something sudden game changers aren't)
polyamory is experienced by many people as a legitimate orientation and lifestyle...when it is
practiced ethically, by mutual consent and ongoing negotiation. True open or polyamorous
relationships can exist only with trust, openness and ongoing negotiation.

Ethical non–mongamy involves confronting ongoing change, issues of fairness, shifting relationship
dynamics, developing negotiating skills, and a solid relationship with yourself. These are all skills
one needs to be part of any relationship, couple, friendship or family. Whether you choose to leave a
relationship that's no longer working, or navigate a rapid;y changing one, you will still be in in your

Sexual Reproduction And Mating Systems Essay
Hi all, I just wanted to add information to what has been discussed. In topic 11, we learnt about
sexuality (Bingham, Paul M., and Souza J. 2009). A standout amongst the most intriguing parts of
human life is the manner by which we pick our mates. Animals likewise pick their mates, in some
cases with a lot of consideration. Mating systems are critical to comprehend in light of the fact that
they mirror the consequence of common choice on mate decision, and eventually on systems for
augmenting individual reproductive success. A mating system depicts how guys and females pair
while picking a mate. Males and females vary extraordinarily in the speculation every makes to
reproduce, and may along these lines approach mating with contrasting procedures. At the point
when picking mates, animals develop species–regular systems for amplifying their reproductive
success – this outcomes in significant diversity qualities among animal species in their mating
patterns. In particular, sexual reproduction frequently includes evolutionary differentiation of males
and females. Females commonly create fundamentally less gametes (eggs) than males and invest
heavily in every one. Then again, males produce numerous gametes (sperm) and put little into every
one. These solid contrasts in gamete investment between the genders prompts reproductive
procedures between the genders that, now and again, struggle. Females may spend more care than
males selecting a mate because of the high cost of their

Philosophy Paper on Morality and Polygamy
Morality and Polygamy
There are many people opposed to the concept of polygamous marriages. Polygamy is legal in some
countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, but illegal in others, such as the United States of America.
Many have personal, religious, and/or cultural reasons to disagree with such practices, but is the
practice of polygamy morally wrong, or is it acceptable? Some argue that it is wrong because of the
negative consequences caused by such marriages; yet ignore successful polygamous marriages
altogether. I do not agree that all polygamous marriages have negative consequences. I argue that the
practice of consensual polygamy can be morally acceptable under these conditions; (1) All parties
must be aware, in advance, of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If this is the case, this tier receives the high score of one.
There are some who do not see why a woman would agree to enter a polygamous marriage and
believe that "only fear of superior force could bring a woman to 'agree' to the injustice of a
polygamous marriage" (Vogel, Ursula 243). Although some women would only agree to such a
lifestyle through force, many others invite and prefer the idea of polygamy to monogamy. Some
women believe that the shared responsibility takes the weight off a single spouse and distributes it
equally. Other women enjoy the sisterhood of their sister wives and appreciate having the company
of other women within their marriage. There can be many reasons why a person might prefer
polygamy. So it is accurate to assume that some woman do choose polygamy willingly. The second
tier is the general moral considerations. It consists of prima facie principles which are the obvious
do's and don'ts that most people have been raised with. For example, a person should tell the truth
and not lie, be fair and not cheat, help and not hurt others, unless (in that specific situation) it must
be overruled for a great reason. This tier is valued at zero to 100. In all cases, the higher the value,
the higher the morality and its permissibility. In this tier, basic respect for individuals must be
considered. There are many issues that can fall into this category such as inequality,

Oikonomia In The Catholic Church
Unfortunately divorce has become a prevalent problem in the western world and Catholic Christians
have not been immune to the issue. A survey conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the
Apostolate, notes that, "Twenty–three percent of adult Catholics have gone through a divorce", and
of that percentage approximately, "Eleven percent of adult Catholics have divorced and are currently
either remarried, living with a partner, or widowed" (Catholic Culture). Thus, almost one out of
every four Catholics has been divorced and of that number ten percent have remarried or live "in
sin". This is problematic for those Catholics because they are no longer allowed to participate
sacramentally in the Church. More to the point, participating in the activities that truly identify
themselves as Catholic, partaking in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the
Eucharist, are no longer available to divorced Catholics who are living with another and remarried
Catholics who did not avail themselves of an annulment. Is there a solution, that is scripturally and
theologically grounded, that may offer divorced and remarried Catholics an opportunity to return to
the fold of the Catholic Church? The Orthodox Church ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bux, "Only the first marriage is celebrated as a true sacrament" (Chiesa). The marriage party still
must petition the church authorities for the right to remarry. As opposed to the Catholic belief that
the marriage must be civilly ended (divorce) before the annulment process can begin, in the
Orthodox faith, all that is needed is the granting of the divorce by church authorities. From there,
permission to remarry may be

The 's Opinion On Monogamy
Gordeau's opinion on monogamy relates well in theory and reinforces current societal norms .
However, her argument lacks research to support her view, while giving few examples of the
benefits of monogamy she relinquishes any depth and breadth in her opinion, leaving out any clarity
on this matter.
Gordeau's points...
"Humans are among just 3% of mammals that form pair bonds, she says." (Taverner p. 74) – Only
3% of mammals pair bonds is an extremely low percentage and does not support the case for
monogamy. Moreover, I would argue this is a point for non–monogamy and state it is more natural
not to mate for life than to continue a monogamous relationship, because 97% mammals do not
form pair bonds.
"...a human woman carried a child in her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It created more variety in the woman's family line, doubled a man's potential offspring, and served
as an insurance policy against spouses death." (Taverner p. 74) – Gourdeau stating this point
supports non monogamous relationships instead of monogamous because it gives an example of
why cheating has benefits. Furthermore, she then dives into a study about the difficulties of staying
faithful.
Anderson's study on monogamy doesn't work because of our pornified culture, "people will become
habituated (bored) with their partner faster and experience an increased desire to see sex with
others." (Taverner p. 74) – Again, Gourdeau makes a statement in her article providing research on
opposing her position on monogamy. Moreover, she only states Anderson sampled a narrow
demographic, however, she never explains how this point supports monogamy.
Gourdeau states, "humans want sex with multiple people it doesn't mean they need it or that it's in
their best interest." (Taverner p. 75) – Personally I agree with this statement. However, much can be
said for flipping this statement around for non monogamous relationships. Moreover, wellness is
about finding a balance. Individuals could seek to find a balance with multiple partners.

will assist with self esteem, avoidance of STI's, conforms with social norms,

Should they have the right to feel safe and happy, no matter their means of getting there? Maybe if
there were more answers to the questions people have, just maybe then polyamory wouldn't be such
a scary thing. For instance, many people question whether polyamory is all about physical attention.
The answer is yes and no. No because the center attraction to polyamory tends to be the love or the
amor and the focus is mostly on relationships; yes because there are always physical attention
properties in almost every relationship. Another question that is commonly asked is whether
polyamory and adultery are similar or go hand in hand. This is not true, polyamory is about a
consensual love that is equal amongst all three members ("Polyterms" Aphroweb). The last question,
that is asked quite often, is if someone supports or is in a polyamorous relationship, are they
considered anti–monogamy ("The Downside of Polyamory" Deborah Anapol Ph.D). No, this is not
true. People can be whatever they want and not have to immediately be apposed of the opposite. It's
like if someone has a preference towards Star Trek, that doesn't immediately mean they hate Star
Wars when in fact they enjoy both and just happen to have a preference towards

The Relationship Between Frida Kahlo And Diego Rivera
Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, two Mexican artists, entered into a consensually non–monogamous

this because she answered the question of why she puts up with his affairs like this; "Look, Diego is
how he is, and that is how I love him. I cannot love him for what he is not. (Clancy Sigal)." These
relationships are basically ways to engage in sex outside of the relationship but they differ from
cheating because the partner is aware. Different types of non–monogamous relationships include
partner swapping, swinging and polyamory (Pappas). Studies are just beginning to be started about

Going back to the toast at Frida and Diego's wedding, marriage was stated to be a political act that
occurred in the name of tradition. Monogamy is also enforced by culture, economics, social factors
and it is the normal thing to do (Robinson). As we saw in the movie, Frida's mother was highly
opposed to her marriage to Diego because he had been divorced twice already and because he was a
Communist; her fear was that he would not be good to Frida. Even in society today, when a man and
woman are not monogamous, they are frowned upon or referred to in derogatory terms. Research
shows that promiscuity raised the likelihood of reproduction and survival, but monogamy worked
where there was a low female to male ratio, limiting men's options (Borreli, Are Humans Naturally

Until Diego crossed the boundaries of having sex with Frida's sister, their relationship seemed to
work for them. Borreli noted that researchers found non–monogamous people have specific

mutations in receptor genes that respond to the hormone vasopressin. Maybe Diego really was on to

Summary Of John Gottman's 'The Four Horsemen Of The...
John Gottman asserts that within minutes of observing a couple, he can with 94% accuracy, predict
whether their marriage will succeed and be happy or end in divorce. He bases this prediction on
their ratio of positive to negative interactions between the couple. If he is correct, then using
communication tools which increase positive interactions in a marriage will increase the chances of
a successful marriage. No marriage is perfect, but there seems to be identifying markers that
characterize marriages which end in divorce. John Gottman calls these indicators, "The Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse." These four behaviors are criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and
stonewalling.
From this module I will summarize and review what those negative communications look like
within a relationship. Those within a marriage where these patterns of communication are present,
do not feel safe, secure or significant. Therefore, it is essential to identify those patterns. If a person

Polygamy in the United States
Polygamy is the practice of having multiple spouses at one time, and has been considered a
controversial social and legal topic in society, gaining attention as a subject in which multiple
opinions are held. As the topic has become a part of mainstream culture through media accounts of
polygamist families by news outlets and reality television, confusion has emerged in reference to its
main characteristics and legitimacy as a form of marriage. However, this kind of marriage is
intriguing because it enters more than two individuals into the union, potentially causing a change in
husband–wife dynamics. In particular, polygamy with multiple wives proves to be more common in
media accounts of these relationships. That being said, appreciating this form of marriage, as in any
union, requires an understanding of how the different social players behave and the general
interactions of the husband–wife relationships. Likewise, it is important to understand how this type
of union exemplifies the typical United States ideals of marriage. With more information regarding
polygamist marriages, society can better understand its similarities and differences from normative
patterns, ultimately eliminating some of the stigma placed on the husbands and wives of these
relationships.

How Does Polygamy Affect Macroeconomics?
It seems as if economists and people alike have been questioning the very premise and foundation
which lies upon the boundaries of marriage and monogamy. Does being in a monogamous
relationship mean one is better off economically? One can never know; thousands of societies in
history have practiced polygamy and have bloomed blissfully in their times, yet have ultimately
come to their unlawful demise in the end. This could however lead one to believe that the premature
ending of monogamy could be sought towards as well. George Murdock, an American
anthropologist very clearly recorded in his ethnographic atlas that 850 of the 1,170 societies he
provided data on practiced polygyny. Therefore it's a capacious question why our modern day

The definition of economic growth is the amalgamation of labor, capital and technological change.
As people living in modern societies, one can see that they contribute to this growth with their
everyday economic decisions such as investing, consuming and saving. Although one can clearly
see the way this affects microeconomics, it brings into the question how one's everyday decisions
affect the larger scale of macroeconomics. Robert Gordon, an economist wrote in one of his highly
acclaimed papers about the long history of U.S. economic growth, furthermore linking periods of
slow and rapid growth to three industrial revolutions: steam and railroads; electricity and the internal

modern society have grown economically, he claims that if we continue to innovate as rapidly we
are, the total economic growth may be substantially lower than the average growth between 1860
and 2007. Although technology economically helps people dramatically, it is still not enough to
offset the overall pullback from rising income inequality, falling labor force participation rates, lack
of widespread education and changing demographic structures. Thus leading to those who are single

Essay On Collaborative Law
Ending a relationship is rarely a pleasant experience. Many people envision a divorce as being one
of the worst things they could have to endure. Splitting up property, agreeing to child custody and
other aspects of ending a marriage can be traumatic.
However, there is a simpler way. Collaborative law can settle family legal issues such as divorce,
without the need to go to court. Here is an explanation of what collaboration is and how it can be
better than a traditional divorce.
Collaboration Is Not Mediation

not. Mediation is an attempt to reach a settlement agreement prior to a divorce going to trial. It may

Why Collaborative Law Might Be Right for You
The thought of a divorce hearing can create an unparalleled level of anxiousness. Collaborative law
by its nature is designed to reduce the level of anxiety surrounding a divorce. There are three basic
reasons why using collaboration may be right for your situation.
Informal and Relaxed Setting
One of the most appealing aspects of collaborative law is that it can avoid the necessity of going to a
courtroom. While there may be a number of meetings between both parties and their legal
representation, each can take place in an informal, relaxed environment.
By avoiding the stressful litigation process, collaborative law spare families the inherent pressure of
courtroom divorce.

the process. They do not have to be called to testify. Each will be asked to attend a joint session to

Analysis Of The Article ' When Brothers Share A Wife ' By...
Polygamy continues to be frowned upon greatly in the United States despite the recent steps toward
legalizing different marriage arrangements and polygamy's attempt to go mainstream with television
shows that give the outside world an inside view of their lifestyle. In Tibet, however, polyandry (a
form of polygamy) has been a part of the culture for as long as anyone can remember and does not
seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. In the article, "When Brothers Share a Wife" by Melvyn
C. Goldstein, polyandry is explored in all aspects, including age, dynamics, and purpose.
The author begins by setting the stage with a single case where a man, Dorje, is set to marry a
woman who will also be marrying his two brothers, Pema and Sonam. This one case example is
used throughout the article to support various points on the subject. Goldstein moves right into
defining fraternal polyandry as a marriage of two or more brothers marrying one woman who then
moves into the family home. Like other cultures, this marriage is typically arranged with the persons
who are marrying having little to no say in the decision. The actual marriage ceremony differs
depending on income and location factors.
Goldstein then flows into the dynamics of authority and familial relations, as these are one of the
first topics people speculate about. It is shared that the oldest brother is typically the dominant
brother but everything from work to the wife is shared equally in all ways. The question of how the

looks at divorced women is the most painful thing, because they usually put the blame on women.
This may cause them to avoid people and maybe isolate themselves .However some women look at
divorce in positive way .They think that divorce is the end of a miserable, unhappy and

You're lying to yourself if you have never thought about trying something new, or you're just a
boring person. Being monogamous is really a battle with what we want from our relationship which
is passion. Non–monogamous relationships teach us about what we expect, what we think we want,
and what we feel entitled to.
Monogamy
the practice of being married to one person at one time the practice of having sexual relations with
just only one partner
The definition rings the word practice in my mind. This practice round of marriage makes me feel
trapped. I don't wanna feel trapped for the rest of my life in this comfort zone of our love being
bound by monogamy. How do you leave the comfort zone? Well you never really leave it because of
course you took on the role of having this person be madly in love with you. However I propose to
you a non monogamous relationship aka an open relationship. I'd like to take this moment of being
young and avoid being 18 and feeling married. I don't wanna feel trapped. I wanna be my own
person and get this time to know myself and see what I want. I have always been around someone,
never really been alone. Whether it be love from my parents or a relationship love. I learned what

Cohabitation Among Older Adults
Families of the 21st century come in all types of shapes and sizes. Families are diversified into
"Nuclear Family" into an exception and to some no longer considered the "normal". Today it is also
+++++important to discuss the family spectrum in the older population. This population varies with
families/ adults that have been widowed, divorced, to single and cohabitating. Today my focus is on
the older adults living in cohabitation. "Cohabitation Among Older Adults : A national portrait"
written by Dr. Susan L. Brown, Gary R. Lee and Jennifer Roebuck Bulanda discusses the prevalence
of cohabitation and states that the number of adults cohabitating has grown significantly in recent
decades, and this growth has been evident across all age groups.

believe this could have changed to results with a drastic increase in the number of cohabitating

Polygamy In The United States: A Comparative Analysis
A study of closed societies in which polygamous relationships are practiced demonstrate certain
sociological traits. These traits are related to the societies' ideas concerning the intent and moral
goals related to marriage. They are often determined by religious practice and considered to be a
requirement for heavenly blessings.
Newman explains in the textbook about a certain type of marriage named polygamy, occurs when a
man marries more than one wife. Polygamy is illegal in the United States, but practitioners are
rarely prosecuted as long as they remain in the background. Families shape our customs, values,
morals, and address many of society's needs (Newman 2016:186–187). In Gorvett's article, she

Penguins Research Paper
A penguin is a bird that is typically found in Antartica that is flightless but can swim fast in arctic
waters. Humans are fascinated with the flightless bird with dense flippers because we think they
mate for life which is a goal most humans strive to accomplish in their lifetimes. However, it is not
plausible that penguins mate for life because the majority of the animals in the animal kingdom,
including humans, do not mate for life so why should they? It is not plausible that penguins mate for
life because of different factors like: monogamy versus life mates, 95 percent of animals do not mate
for life and each penguin species have differences in breeding seasons. Penguins, like most birds,
are monogamous within the duration of breeding season (Leu). Monogamy is defined as the practice
of being married, or in this case, having one mate at a time. There are two different versions of
monogamy; there is sexual monogamy and social monogamy . Sexual monogamy is the practice of
breeding with one mate at a time (Than). Social monogamy is when animals form pairs and to mate

Everyone should see Kramer vs. Kramer, including parents and children of broken families. I first

Diane Medved The Case Against Divorce Research Paper
Marriage is the Glue of Society
Millions of Americans find out the hardships a divorce brings each year. Although many couples
know it can be a long hard road, many still decide it is the best option. In her book "The Case
against Divorce" 1989, Diane Medved confesses, "Quite simply, I discovered in my research that the
process and aftermath of divorce is so pervasively disastrous–to body, mind, and spirit– that in an
overwhelming number of cases, the "cure" that it brings is surely worse than marriages "disease"

Many couples see divorce as an easy way out of a marriage and they feel like they can deflect all the
feelings that come with it. Medved says, "The grim stories of crippled couples who I have
interviewed for this book got me thinking about the permanent distrust, anguish, and bitterness
divorce brings" (665). After a divorce many newly single people find that they are unable to find
happiness and the scars left by a divorce is the reason. For instance, many of those who divorce are
not ready for the roller coaster ride that lies ahead of them. Medved asserts, "While everyone
laments the immediate trauma of "going through a divorce" more discomfiting is the alarming news
of it's lingering emotional and psychological effects" (666). Many men and women think they will
bounce back as soon as the divorce is over, but many never do. Moreover, even a strong and
independent person can be devastated by divorce. Medved declares, "The physical act of packing a
bag and moving out is traumatic" (664). When thinking about divorce the mental strain is what
many consider, but at times the physical pain is harder to

Why Is Divorce Acceptable in Society? Essay
Mary Kirkland
Professor Tate–Owens
English 1020 23 February 2010
Why is Divorce Acceptable in Society? Divorce is something that has become more common in
today's civilization. It's happening all over the world but mostly in the United States of America.
Most marriages that have fail in the last 5 years have not succeeded have resulted in divorce. In
earlier periods in life divorce was considered shocking and terrible, whereas in today's world it's
accepted. Divorce has become acceptable in society for numerous reasons and will continue to be
accepted. Though, many think divorce is frowned upon, it's more acceptable in society because the

In today's society marriage is all about the perfect dress, the size of the ring and how much money
can you spend to have the most platinum wedding. The vows at the altar are just routine to society,
it's suppose to be read by the pastor and recited by the bride and groom. The wedding vows are not
taken serious and neither is the marriage. People in society lose sight of the morals of marriage
which is why they get divorced and society accepts it. Divorce is acceptable in society because
society has changed its meanings and morals of marriage. Equally important, divorce is becoming
acceptable in our society because it's allowed and isn't frowned upon. Divorce has always been legal
but it has become an escape route for some. In today's society people feel if their marriage isn't
working out for them, divorced is the first resort. People don't try to work out their marriages
anymore; they feel if this person can't do what they need them too someone else will. People in
society continue to jump in and out of marriages because it isn't a divorce requirement. They are
allowed to get married and/or divorced as many times as they would like too because they can. If
there were requirements to getting divorce society would not have as many divorces as it does. The
fact that people can get as many divorces as they want due to the fact of the marriage not benefitting

Components of Open Marriage & Polyamory and the Ethics...
In America, the values of monogamous, heterosexual marriage are drilled into the fabric of the
society – so much so that the prospect of any other setup becomes virtually unthinkable. However,
in an ever–evolving semiosphere, these other setups are emerging from their hiding place in order to
find a forefront spot in contemporary culture and establish themselves as legitimate lifestyles.
Education and understanding become paramount as new ideas and formations appear, necessitating
tolerance and even acceptance.
One of these new formations is what's known as an "open marriage," in which one or both members
of a dichotomous marriage seek sexual satisfaction through extraneous partners. Anyone who has

But as time passes, the role of the spouse has become much more encompassing: now one's partner
is expected to be not only their lover, but their best friend, their therapist, confidant, playmate,
masseuse, and escort with matching taste in music and movies. These expectations are of course
somewhat unrealistic – one will most likely not find everything they could ever want in just one
person. This is where polyamory comes into play: it gives you everything – just not from the same
person. According to Washington Post writer Monica Hesse,
Polyamory isn't about sex, polys tell you. It is about love. It is about loving your primary partner
enough to love that they have a new secondary partner, even when their New Relationship Energy
with that person leaves you, briefly, out in the cold. It's about loving yourself enough to
acknowledge that your needs cannot be met by one loving person. It's about loving love enough to
embrace it in unexpected form –– like maybe in the form of your primary's new secondary! –– in
which case you may all form a triad and live happily together. That kind of love.
But unlike an open marriage, which is the pursuit of sexual gratification with no strings attached,
polyamory is "less about them wanting to fulfill personal desires, they say, and more about needing
more people to meet the daily requirements of 21st–century life. As in, if it takes two incomes to

Taking a Look at Divorce
Divorce is viewed differently by many people. Sometimes this is due to experiences, what others
have said, or looking at studies that are not always accurate. However, not everyone can have the
same views about marriage ending in divorce. In the article, "No Easy Answers: Why the Popular
View of Divorce Is Wrong" by Constance Ahrons she shows her view on divorce. Ahrons believes
that divorce does not have long–lasting damaging effects on children (65). Divorce can affect
children in the family but the way the decisions are made is what will change the way the kids are
influenced.
First of all, opposing viewpoints say that divorce can cause the child to feel like their life is not
going to be the same. In contrast, this is not a highly supported statement. One thing that is
commonly stated about divorce is, once two married parents with children decide to divorce, that
they are no longer a family (66). Although, they may not be living together in the same house it does
not mean they are still not a family. No matter what, the parents will always be linked to each other
because of the children. Is that not the definition of a family? In addition, assumptions are made that
if people are married with kids that they are an ideal family This is not the case, if the marriage is
not working out and is only causing problems amongst the parents and kids than that is not
considered a family either. Divorce does not cause children to lose their family, if anything it helps
to fix them.

The Issue Of Gay Marriage
Marriage is one of the oldest, passed down traditions since the beginning of time. As humanity
evolves through generations, traditions change, but the act of choosing your partner stays the same.
For an example, not until President Barack Obama was in office, gay marriage was unacceptable.
When President Obama announced that gay marriage was legal, that was a moment in history that
will never be forgotten. The process of marriage continues to be the same, but each generation has
been going out of their way to change the rules of how getting married is done. Young adults that are
in their late 20's have been eloping since the early 1900's, however due to the change in society and

On the other hand, couples argue that getting married early is perfect since couples evolve and grow
together. Just saying that statement out loud is wrong. Once the monogamous relationship sets in,
divorce papers will be practically signed. Furthermore, like mentioned earlier, maturity is huge.
Even though, the United States justice system marks a teenager an adult at the age of 18, that by no
means makes teenagers able to make progressive and responsible decisions for their life or for the
life of others. Marriage requires both individuals to be able to make non–impulsive decisions since
both lives have been conjoined. "The first years of adulthood, when you become the driver,
navigating adult life for the very first time, are the very first steps of adulthood and they make a
significant contribution to where you will go and how you will do. (Tanner)." The decision of
getting married early is a perfect example of impulsive behavior and immaturity. Most the time,
these relationships have only been together for a few months or even just a few years; it is beyond
irresponsible to say that both parties fully understand the other during a short period. In the
opposing corner, teenagers stand by the fact that they are marked adults by the age of 18. These so
called "adults" believe since they can fight for our country and vote for the next presidential leader,
this justifies their actions and proves that they are accountable enough to make executive and

You 're Ugly By Toni Morrison Essay
What makes an interesting and impactful novel often revolves around conflict, obstacles, and
adversity and how the characters within the fictional universe cope with or triumph over these
challenges. The manner in which characters choose to interact with adversity in their own ways
enlightens who they are as a character and can help illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole.
The character of Sula in Sula by Toni Morrison as well as the character of Zoe in Lorrie Moore's
You're Ugly, Too both face the adversity of isolation through sexual and social rejection, but they
handle it in radically different ways. Sula challenges this adversity by facing it directly, experiencing
and therefore empathizing with and respecting the possessive relationship she is trying to avoid.
Conversely, Zoe deals with this adversity in the same way she always has, barricading herself from
growing as a character. Through their interactions in the face of their own adversities, these
characters reveal a central message that dropping what is expected of one's self sexually will
eliminate isolation and perhaps lead to a healthy relationship. A large source of adversity that both
Sula and Zoe face is sexual failures, which leads to social and societal rejection. In Sula, Sula is
characterized by her lack of adherence to conventional sexual norms. She subscribes to a personal
philosophy that she must be free, that a monogamous relationship is boring and restricting and she
must reject that to remain

Human Flaws In The Book Of Genesis
Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Torah, is for many people a book of innocent stories about the
Creation, and the noble Patriarchs that follow the will of God. However, Genesis has much more to
provide to humankind than stories; whether or not one takes Genesis as history, it does give insight
into the lives and customs of the primeval Jewish people. Fundamentally, the Book of Genesis
focuses on the family. The Book follows the descendants of Adam through the Patriarchs, offering a
look into each family, and the dynamics surrounding them. Genesis, and much of the Torah, are
unique in that it portrays the Lord's chosen not as upright and noble people, but people with deep,
distinctly human flaws, flaws that many families today can relate ... Show more content on

Based on the comparison of Genesis' monogamous and polygamous relationships, the culture of the
patriarchs valued heirs above all. Whether or not the people of that culture took the concept of a
one–man–one–woman marriage as tradition, or something to be valued, it is clear that the format of
a marriage does not matter when heirs are at stake. Genesis states that "Abram was 86 years old
when Hagar bore him Ishmael," meaning Sarah gave Abraham to Hagar after a monogamous
marriage of many decades (16:16) Now, as Sarah obviously felt jealousy, the need for an heir to
Abraham's name bore greater weight than their relationship. As seen in the story of Lot and his
daughters, the need for an heir even drove some to commit incest, an act most likely seen as
indecent. The desire for sons is what partially prompted Leah and Rachel to fight. In addition, the
concept of the heir relates to the repeated use of "generations" and genealogy chapters in the book,

Marriage By David Popenoe And Barbara Dafoe Whitehead...
Marriage: a fairy tale where every moment leads to happiness and everlasting love. In the article
"What's Happening to Marriage?" the authors David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead reverse
the fairy tale of marriage. The article conveys a different aspect of marriage that marriage is
weakening and divorce is on the rise. The authors believe men and women of this time have more
struggles when marrying one another than when their parents or grandparents got married. The
authors' arguments are well supported, but their use of fallacies outweighs their theories. David
Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead claim that in today's society marriage is becoming more of a
trust issue than previously thought. They believe marriages have none of these elements: "...an
economic bond of mutual dependency; a social bond supported by the extended family and larger
community; and a spiritual bond upheld by religious doctrine, observance and faith" (520). Marriage
is becoming more of a "couples relationship" and losing meaning in society's culture; therefore, the
rate of divorce is increasing causing people to be cautious of marriage. Popenoe and Whitehead use
numerous statistics about divorce rate; however, they only examine the women's point of view.
According to the authors, this is not the first time marriage has gone to the dumps and recovered
causing the authors to delay on writing marriage's obituary. The authors of the article value a

Relationship Between Relationships And Family Structures
Relationships can either be monogamous or non–monogamous in nature and its definitions and
functions can vary. A monogamous relationship is traditionally characterised by two individuals who
have dependent children or also as a 'nuclear family.' Monogamy is a hetero–normative practice that
involves two individuals in a relationship; the couple is not engaged in extramarital intimacy.
Nuclear families also fall under this practice. Polyamory is a non–monogamous practice that refers
to multiple intimate partners and experiences. However, some scholars argue that if, or when one
individual engages in infidelity, Polyamory is a viable option to sustain the relationship. Academic

underpins marriage in many Western and some non–Western countries." Scholars have continued to
argue the success of monogamous relationships. Harville Hendrix (1990) explains that monogamy is
a healing practice. Partners in monogamous relationships go through many stages and struggles as a
committed couple. Through struggle, partners act as healers that help to work through each other's
suffering (Hendrix 1990). Hendrix (1990) believes individuals choose their partners to work through
the pain together and help them grow through life. Monogamous marriage is a spiritual path to
happiness and commitment between two individuals (Hendrix 1990). A committed relationship
requires monogamy, and Hendrix (1990) contends that healthy and spiritual commitments encourage
the sustainability of monogamous relationships. Although Hendrix (1990) contends that monogamy
is an effective practice, research has largely built a case around the consequences of monogamous
relationships.
Debates have circled around the experiences within nuclear families and monogamous relationships,
and Stelbourn (1999) proclaims it is a largely patriarchal practice. Stelbourn (1999) uses Engel's
work during the eighteenth century, to explain the still–existent contemporary debate around the
consequences of monogamy. The work of Friedrich Engels (Stelbourn 1999) focused on the division
between mothers as housewives, and fathers as workers in nuclear families. Women were reduced in

Monogamy In American Culture
In American culture, relationships, commitment, and sex are synonymous with monogamy.
However, this is not always the case. Monogamy is defined by Merriam–Webster as "the state or
practice of being married to only one person at a time" or "of having only one sexual partner during
a period of time." Alternatively, polyamory is defined as "the state or practice of having more than
one open romantic relationship at a time."
The word polyamory derives from both Greek (poly) and Latin (amory) roots and can be directly
translated to mean "many loves." This is an idea of which popularity has risen a great deal in
mainstream media over the last couple of decades.

based on the values of freedom, honesty, and commitment. This is relevant because it gives a new

To test our hypothesis, we will use the Experimental method, where we use scientific research. This

you may be struggling with how to select the right divorce attorney. There are several differences in
law firms that you can use to narrow your selections down.
Some of the factors that will affect your selection of a family law attorney are:
Confidence
A divorce attorney has to be aggressive enough to go after what you want from the dissolution of the
marriage. When you go to the free consultation visit you need to ask the divorce attorney exactly
what they will do to represent you. You want them to answer with confidence, to have knowledge,
experience, and determination. When you hire a divorce attorney you need a "pit bull" that will grab

Experience
When you are comparing law firms that handle family matters like child custody, divorce, and trust
funds, you want someone that has experience dealing with the issues you might be facing. You want
a law firm that has dealt with many different types of family law matters so that they will be
prepared to handle anything that might come up during your case.
Affordability
Unfortunately you will have to consider the amount of money that the law firm charges to handle
cases like yours. Legal representation can be quite expensive unless you carefully select a law firm
that has prices you can afford. Some law firms have payment plans that they offer their clients, and
some of them postpone payment until the divorce is finalized because the other party may be

four main points to get his opinion across: grace–law hypocrisy, polygamists in the Bible, the
meaning of adultery and one flesh, and prohibitions of leaders in the Bible. An individual with little
to no Biblical knowledge might find that his argument makes sense. Just listening to the speech,
without any critical thinking involved, might even persuade those with slightly more Biblical
knowledge. Although outwardly he may seem to make solid arguments, there is much more to the
polygamy argument than he brought forth. The first justification for polygamy that he presents is
that it was not banned, but was regulated under the law, therefore causing polygamy to be an
accepted form of lifestyle. The verses given to support this claim are Exodus 21:10, "If he marries
another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing, and marital rights," and
Deuteronomy 21:15, "if a man has two wives...," but there are issues with how these verses are
being used. The Bible is not addressing the issue of polygamy in these verses. They are being taken
out of context and bent to please the will of one man; the former is under the context of servants and
the latter is about the rights of the firstborn son. Based on this, I would say that this point invalid and
not worth further discussion. The

Why Some Feminists Give The Movement A Bad Rap

  • 1. Why Some Feminists Give The Movement A Bad Rap Why Some Feminists Give the Movement a Bad Rap: A Response Catherine Newman's "I Do Not" Patriarchy is defined as a social system in which males are the primary authority figures central to social organization (www.wikipedia.com). This is the term used by author Catherine Newman to describe marriage. Being so bitter and cold about marriage seems to me, to be coming from a cold–hearted, feminist point of view. To not be so callus and sexist could open one to a new world of loving experiences. Author Catherine Newman is an unwed mother, who in this piece of writing explains why she won't get married. Newman states in her article I Do Not. Why I Won't Marry, "Because marriage is about handing the woman off, like a baton, from her father to her husband. Also known as "traffic in women," this is how men have historically solidified their economic connections to other men..." (61) I have to disagree with this statement. This symbolism in American culture represents, in my experiences, the father handing the woman off to the groom entrusting him to love and protect the bride as he has her whole life. This statement from Newman gives me the sense that she is a feminist, only seeing that the man "has control" and not taking marriage for its intended meaning. The outdated idea about the idea of the "embarrassing detail of the bride's family shelling out the ten or fifty thousand dollars for the wedding itself"(62). It's a far stretch to better her position on why she won't marry. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Divorce In The 20th Century The 20th century revolutionized the amount of divorces in the United States of America has ever filed for. Certainly in the year of 1980 "more than 40 percent of the marriages made that year would end in divorce. Expressed as a 5.3 persons per 1,000 persons in 1983 were divorced; in 1950, the ratio was 2.6 per 1,000" ("Divorce Increase"). Some marriages have certainly over time, continue to fail and result in a divorce. There are multiple reasons as to why marriages result in failures. However, due to the high demand of divorces, it's a shock to us why it is happening and what happened in the 20th century that resulted in this data. The Industrial Revolution, women having much more power and drastic changes in society has a huge contribution ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the article, "Divorce Increases by Half," they claim that in the beginning of Christianity, marriage was very sacred and no human could ever ruin a marriage because marriage is considered as an inviolate contract before God (para 2). This belief of the church has strictly forbidden a married couple to get a divorce. The divorce rate was very low and children were likely to feel compassion among their parents' because they were there for them both. In comparison, other countries in the early period were refused as well to divorce because of the church's beliefs on marriage. In the 1500s, European courts started to allow divorce upon couples only if they can prove that their partner has committed adultery, cruelty and/or desertion ("Divorce" West). Although, other countries started to be more lenient toward divorce, they still had a difficult time to receive a divorce. Such as in England, only about 229 divorces were given to couples who wanted a divorce between 1669 to 1850 ("Divorce" West). The extreme change in society's view among marriage has changed it all. In today's society, divorce can be easily obtained, no one can be at fault, which the No–Fault Divorce states. This law can cause the procedure to go quicker and smoother that the couple can abandon their marriage when the beginning sign of distaste from one another occurs ("Family Law"). The change of law toward divorce has impacted the views of the church that allows religious couples to get a divorce once they feel that the marriage is not going well. No one can stop them as well as fixed their situation that can raise the divorce rates even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Social and Reproductive Monogamy in Vole Rats Social and Reproductive Monogamy in Vole Rats Reproductive monogamy is defined as an exclusive sexual relationship between a female and a male based on their sexual interactions. Social Monogamy refers to male and female's social living arrangement without sexual interactions. It refers to the living patterns, raising offsprings, and obtaining food. Monogamy is common in birds, but also occurs in invertebrates. Why would a male mammal choose to mate with one female when he can mate with more than one? Why would the male stay around instead of finding another female to live with? Many researchers have attempted to answer this question of why some mammals prefer monogamy over polygamy. Vole rats, one of the species that perform monogamous mating, demonstrate pair boding. Male and female pairs of vole rats have been observed together over several months, and the males stay with females even when the female is not reproductively active. A typical vole family in the wild is almost always consisted of one male, one female, and their offspring. In addition, unlike other species in which females are the only ones taking care of the offspring, vole rats share parental roles and even build nests together. Because they show these monogamous behaviors, they have served as a good species/model to learn about monogamy for neuroscientists. In this paper, monogamy, specifically in vole rats, will be explained along with its proximate and ultimate causes of this adaptation. There are two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Psy 230 Week 2 One of the important things that I learned from Demo and Fine chapter 4 and 5 is about the societal views of marriage and divorce. By reading chapter 4, it has been clear to me that marriage still reserved as the highest desired institution. However, I also shocked with the fact that marriage rates are higher for more educated men and women compared to prior generations that are lower for more educated individuals. About divorce, it is good to hear that the negative stigma associated with divorce is reduced over time even though it does not seem that it has become positive in the recent years. Besides, I also learned that even though marriage is popular, the social norms governing marriage have become weaker. This happens may be because there is a change from institutional to companionate marriage and also there is a larger emphasis on marriage meeting individualistic and self–fulfilling need. People hold many expectations on marriage. People expect marriage can help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, there are still regional differences in settlement and custody even though all of the states have some form of no–fault divorce. Besides, divorce procedures have become simpler and divorce is once again a personal decision. Nevertheless, the divorce processes are still complicated especially if the married couple have children. Moreover, I learned about the internal emotional and psychological dimensions of divorce introduced by Reva Wiseman. By reading this, it shows that process of separation can extends deeply into the psyche. Wiseman said that there are five stages of divorce–denial, loss and depression, anger and ambivalence, reorientation of lifestyle and identity and acceptance and integration. This view of divorce let us see and learn about the process of crisis in individuals' mind. It also shows how emotions can shift accompanying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Polygamy in Canada Essay Within Canada we have a generous amount of freedom but this leads to the abuse of our system. This is especially true with regards to polygamy in Bountiful, BC. Because women are susceptible to mental abuse in polygamist relationships it should continue to be illegal in Canada. If this law is in enforced it would help women to be freed of the oppression caused by male domination, eliminate the need for women to suppress feelings that conflict with the ideals of the polygamy life, and aid in avoiding depression resulting from the build–up of concealed feelings. Polygamy is the case in which a man or a woman has multiple spouses. One branch of polygamy is termed "polygyny", which is when "one man is married to several wives" (Zeitzen 3). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Providing such controls permits women from becoming independent: to think emotionally and mentally development. Of course here an opponent might validly argue that men must take the dominant role and provide authority due to the idea: "women report more intense and persistent anger than do men" (88:1546). However, even though it is true that women are more susceptible to revealing their emotions; women are just as capable as men to run their lives in a constructive, healthy way. Polygynist men have hidden behind the blanket of religion to justify their male supremacy and dismantle the strength and equality of women in a whole. Many women in polygynist relationships tend to hide their feelings, but why? Daphne Braham writes "[women are] taught to suppress [these] emotions and to put all their energy into obeying the word of their prophet." (17) Therefore, any thoughts of resentment, jealousy or so forth are not acceptable. When a man has so many wives they have no choice but to be submissive if they want to avoid being left out; because the husband can turn to another one of his wives to get what he desires. In Dena Hassouneh–Phillips' article, "Polygamy and Wife Abuse: A Qualitative Study of Muslim Women in America," she notes a report from a second wife who felt insignificant in her polygamous marriage due to the lack of attention ... The most common of these calls is from someone who thought they were in a monogamous relationship until their long term partner suddenly changed the game by unilaterally declaring the relationship open, their orientation polyamorous or something like that. To be clear, (something sudden game changers aren't) polyamory is experienced by many people as a legitimate orientation and lifestyle...when it is practiced ethically, by mutual consent and ongoing negotiation. • 15. Sexual Reproduction And Mating Systems Essay Hi all, I just wanted to add information to what has been discussed. In topic 11, we learnt about sexuality (Bingham, Paul M., and Souza J. 2009). A standout amongst the most intriguing parts of human life is the manner by which we pick our mates. Animals likewise pick their mates, in some cases with a lot of consideration. Mating systems are critical to comprehend in light of the fact that they mirror the consequence of common choice on mate decision, and eventually on systems for augmenting individual reproductive success. A mating system depicts how guys and females pair while picking a mate. Males and females vary extraordinarily in the speculation every makes to reproduce, and may along these lines approach mating with contrasting procedures. At the point when picking mates, animals develop species–regular systems for amplifying their reproductive success – this outcomes in significant diversity qualities among animal species in their mating patterns. In particular, sexual reproduction frequently includes evolutionary differentiation of males and females. Females commonly create fundamentally less gametes (eggs) than males and invest heavily in every one. Then again, males produce numerous gametes (sperm) and put little into every one. These solid contrasts in gamete investment between the genders prompts reproductive procedures between the genders that, now and again, struggle. Females may spend more care than males selecting a mate because of the high cost of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Polygamy is legal in some countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, but illegal in others, such as the United States of America. Many have personal, religious, and/or cultural reasons to disagree with such practices, but is the practice of polygamy morally wrong, or is it acceptable? Some argue that it is wrong because of the negative consequences caused by such marriages; yet ignore successful polygamous marriages altogether. There are some who do not see why a woman would agree to enter a polygamous marriage and believe that "only fear of superior force could bring a woman to 'agree' to the injustice of a polygamous marriage" (Vogel, Ursula 243). Although some women would only agree to such a lifestyle through force, many others invite and prefer the idea of polygamy to monogamy. Some women believe that the shared responsibility takes the weight off a single spouse and distributes it equally. Other women enjoy the sisterhood of their sister wives and appreciate having the company of other women within their marriage. There can be many reasons why a person might prefer polygamy. So it is accurate to assume that some woman do choose polygamy willingly. The second tier is the general moral considerations. It consists of prima facie principles which are the obvious do's and don'ts that most people have been raised with. For example, a person should tell the truth and not lie, be fair and not cheat, help and not hurt others, unless (in that specific situation) it must be overruled for a great reason. • 19. Oikonomia In The Catholic Church Unfortunately divorce has become a prevalent problem in the western world and Catholic Christians have not been immune to the issue. A survey conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, notes that, "Twenty–three percent of adult Catholics have gone through a divorce", and of that percentage approximately, "Eleven percent of adult Catholics have divorced and are currently either remarried, living with a partner, or widowed" (Catholic Culture). Thus, almost one out of every four Catholics has been divorced and of that number ten percent have remarried or live "in sin". This is problematic for those Catholics because they are no longer allowed to participate sacramentally in the Church. More to the point, participating in the activities that truly identify themselves as Catholic, partaking in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist, are no longer available to divorced Catholics who are living with another and remarried Catholics who did not avail themselves of an annulment. Is there a solution, that is scripturally and theologically grounded, that may offer divorced and remarried Catholics an opportunity to return to the fold of the Catholic Church? However, her argument lacks research to support her view, while giving few examples of the benefits of monogamy she relinquishes any depth and breadth in her opinion, leaving out any clarity on this matter. Gordeau's points... "Humans are among just 3% of mammals that form pair bonds, she says." (Taverner p. 74) – Only 3% of mammals pair bonds is an extremely low percentage and does not support the case for monogamy. Moreover, I would argue this is a point for non–monogamy and state it is more natural not to mate for life than to continue a monogamous relationship, because 97% mammals do not form pair bonds. (Taverner p. 74) – Gourdeau stating this point supports non monogamous relationships instead of monogamous because it gives an example of why cheating has benefits. Furthermore, she then dives into a study about the difficulties of staying faithful. Anderson's study on monogamy doesn't work because of our pornified culture, "people will become habituated (bored) with their partner faster and experience an increased desire to see sex with others." (Taverner p. 74) – Again, Gourdeau makes a statement in her article providing research on opposing her position on monogamy. Moreover, she only states Anderson sampled a narrow demographic, however, she never explains how this point supports monogamy. Gourdeau states, "humans want sex with multiple people it doesn't mean they need it or that it's in their best interest." (Taverner p. 75) – Personally I agree with this statement. However, much can be said for flipping this statement around for non monogamous relationships. Moreover, wellness is about finding a balance. Individuals could seek to find a balance with multiple partners. Maybe if there were more answers to the questions people have, just maybe then polyamory wouldn't be such a scary thing. For instance, many people question whether polyamory is all about physical attention. The answer is yes and no. No because the center attraction to polyamory tends to be the love or the amor and the focus is mostly on relationships; yes because there are always physical attention properties in almost every relationship. Another question that is commonly asked is whether polyamory and adultery are similar or go hand in hand. This is not true, polyamory is about a consensual love that is equal amongst all three members ("Polyterms" Aphroweb). The last question, that is asked quite often, is if someone supports or is in a polyamorous relationship, are they considered anti–monogamy ("The Downside of Polyamory" Deborah Anapol Ph.D). No, this is not true. People can be whatever they want and not have to immediately be apposed of the opposite. Even in society today, when a man and woman are not monogamous, they are frowned upon or referred to in derogatory terms. Research shows that promiscuity raised the likelihood of reproduction and survival, but monogamy worked where there was a low female to male ratio, limiting men's options (Borreli, Are Humans Naturally Monogamous?). Until Diego crossed the boundaries of having sex with Frida's sister, their relationship seemed to work for them. Borreli noted that researchers found non–monogamous people have specific differences in how their brain responded to reward, described as a cheater's high, attributed to mutations in receptor genes that respond to the hormone vasopressin. John Gottman asserts that within minutes of observing a couple, he can with 94% accuracy, predict whether their marriage will succeed and be happy or end in divorce. He bases this prediction on their ratio of positive to negative interactions between the couple. If he is correct, then using communication tools which increase positive interactions in a marriage will increase the chances of a successful marriage. No marriage is perfect, but there seems to be identifying markers that characterize marriages which end in divorce. John Gottman calls these indicators, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." • 29. Polygamy in the United States Polygamy is the practice of having multiple spouses at one time, and has been considered a controversial social and legal topic in society, gaining attention as a subject in which multiple opinions are held. As the topic has become a part of mainstream culture through media accounts of polygamist families by news outlets and reality television, confusion has emerged in reference to its main characteristics and legitimacy as a form of marriage. However, this kind of marriage is intriguing because it enters more than two individuals into the union, potentially causing a change in husband–wife dynamics. In particular, polygamy with multiple wives proves to be more common in media accounts of these relationships. That being said, appreciating this form of marriage, as in any union, requires an understanding of how the different social players behave and the general interactions of the husband–wife relationships. Likewise, it is important to understand how this type of union exemplifies the typical United States ideals of marriage. With more information regarding polygamist marriages, society can better understand its similarities and differences from normative patterns, ultimately eliminating some of the stigma placed on the husbands and wives of these relationships. Robert Gordon, an economist wrote in one of his highly acclaimed papers about the long history of U.S. economic growth, furthermore linking periods of slow and rapid growth to three industrial revolutions: steam and railroads; electricity and the internal combustion engine; and the recent advent of computers, the internet and mobile phones. Polygamy continues to be frowned upon greatly in the United States despite the recent steps toward legalizing different marriage arrangements and polygamy's attempt to go mainstream with television shows that give the outside world an inside view of their lifestyle. In Tibet, however, polyandry (a form of polygamy) has been a part of the culture for as long as anyone can remember and does not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. In the article, "When Brothers Share a Wife" by Melvyn C. Goldstein, polyandry is explored in all aspects, including age, dynamics, and purpose. The author begins by setting the stage with a single case where a man, Dorje, is set to marry a woman who will also be marrying his two brothers, Pema and Sonam. This one case example is used throughout the article to support various points on the subject. Goldstein moves right into defining fraternal polyandry as a marriage of two or more brothers marrying one woman who then moves into the family home. Like other cultures, this marriage is typically arranged with the persons who are marrying having little to no say in the decision. The actual marriage ceremony differs depending on income and location factors. Goldstein then flows into the dynamics of authority and familial relations, as these are one of the first topics people speculate about. It is shared that the oldest brother is typically the dominant brother but everything from work to the wife is shared equally in all ways. The question of how the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People in society lose sight of the morals of marriage which is why they get divorced and society accepts it. Divorce is acceptable in society because society has changed its meanings and morals of marriage. Equally important, divorce is becoming acceptable in our society because it's allowed and isn't frowned upon. Divorce has always been legal but it has become an escape route for some. In today's society people feel if their marriage isn't working out for them, divorced is the first resort. People don't try to work out their marriages anymore; they feel if this person can't do what they need them too someone else will. People in society continue to jump in and out of marriages because it isn't a divorce requirement. They are allowed to get married and/or divorced as many times as they would like too because they can. If there were requirements to getting divorce society would not have as many divorces as it does. • 56. Components of Open Marriage & Polyamory and the Ethics... In America, the values of monogamous, heterosexual marriage are drilled into the fabric of the society – so much so that the prospect of any other setup becomes virtually unthinkable. However, in an ever–evolving semiosphere, these other setups are emerging from their hiding place in order to find a forefront spot in contemporary culture and establish themselves as legitimate lifestyles. Education and understanding become paramount as new ideas and formations appear, necessitating tolerance and even acceptance. One of these new formations is what's known as an "open marriage," in which one or both members of a dichotomous marriage seek sexual satisfaction through extraneous partners. Anyone who has ever truly invested their emotions in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But as time passes, the role of the spouse has become much more encompassing: now one's partner is expected to be not only their lover, but their best friend, their therapist, confidant, playmate, masseuse, and escort with matching taste in music and movies. These expectations are of course somewhat unrealistic – one will most likely not find everything they could ever want in just one person. This is where polyamory comes into play: it gives you everything – just not from the same person. According to Washington Post writer Monica Hesse, Polyamory isn't about sex, polys tell you. It is about love. It is about loving your primary partner enough to love that they have a new secondary partner, even when their New Relationship Energy with that person leaves you, briefly, out in the cold. It's about loving yourself enough to acknowledge that your needs cannot be met by one loving person. It's about loving love enough to embrace it in unexpected form –– like maybe in the form of your primary's new secondary! –– in which case you may all form a triad and live happily together. That kind of love. But unlike an open marriage, which is the pursuit of sexual gratification with no strings attached, polyamory is "less about them wanting to fulfill personal desires, they say, and more about needing more people to meet the daily requirements of 21st–century life. • 58. Taking a Look at Divorce Divorce is viewed differently by many people. Sometimes this is due to experiences, what others have said, or looking at studies that are not always accurate. However, not everyone can have the same views about marriage ending in divorce. In the article, "No Easy Answers: Why the Popular View of Divorce Is Wrong" by Constance Ahrons she shows her view on divorce. Ahrons believes that divorce does not have long–lasting damaging effects on children (65). Divorce can affect children in the family but the way the decisions are made is what will change the way the kids are influenced. First of all, opposing viewpoints say that divorce can cause the child to feel like their life is not going to be the same. In contrast, this is not a highly supported statement. One thing that is commonly stated about divorce is, once two married parents with children decide to divorce, that they are no longer a family (66). Although, they may not be living together in the same house it does not mean they are still not a family. No matter what, the parents will always be linked to each other because of the children. Is that not the definition of a family? In addition, assumptions are made that if people are married with kids that they are an ideal family This is not the case, if the marriage is not working out and is only causing problems amongst the parents and kids than that is not considered a family either. Divorce does not cause children to lose their family, if anything it helps to fix them. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. The Issue Of Gay Marriage Marriage is one of the oldest, passed down traditions since the beginning of time. As humanity evolves through generations, traditions change, but the act of choosing your partner stays the same. For an example, not until President Barack Obama was in office, gay marriage was unacceptable. When President Obama announced that gay marriage was legal, that was a moment in history that will never be forgotten. The process of marriage continues to be the same, but each generation has been going out of their way to change the rules of how getting married is done. Young adults that are in their late 20's have been eloping since the early 1900's, however due to the change in society and how we operate and communicate, divorce has been becoming ... Once the monogamous relationship sets in, divorce papers will be practically signed. Furthermore, like mentioned earlier, maturity is huge. Even though, the United States justice system marks a teenager an adult at the age of 18, that by no means makes teenagers able to make progressive and responsible decisions for their life or for the life of others. Marriage requires both individuals to be able to make non–impulsive decisions since both lives have been conjoined. "The first years of adulthood, when you become the driver, navigating adult life for the very first time, are the very first steps of adulthood and they make a significant contribution to where you will go and how you will do. (Tanner)." The decision of getting married early is a perfect example of impulsive behavior and immaturity. Most the time, these relationships have only been together for a few months or even just a few years; it is beyond irresponsible to say that both parties fully understand the other during a short period. In the opposing corner, teenagers stand by the fact that they are marked adults by the age of 18. These so called "adults" believe since they can fight for our country and vote for the next presidential leader, this justifies their actions and proves that they are accountable enough to make executive and ... • 62. You 're Ugly By Toni Morrison Essay What makes an interesting and impactful novel often revolves around conflict, obstacles, and adversity and how the characters within the fictional universe cope with or triumph over these challenges. The manner in which characters choose to interact with adversity in their own ways enlightens who they are as a character and can help illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole. The character of Sula in Sula by Toni Morrison as well as the character of Zoe in Lorrie Moore's You're Ugly, Too both face the adversity of isolation through sexual and social rejection, but they handle it in radically different ways. Sula challenges this adversity by facing it directly, experiencing and therefore empathizing with and respecting the possessive relationship she is trying to avoid. Conversely, Zoe deals with this adversity in the same way she always has, barricading herself from growing as a character. Through their interactions in the face of their own adversities, these characters reveal a central message that dropping what is expected of one's self sexually will eliminate isolation and perhaps lead to a healthy relationship. A large source of adversity that both Sula and Zoe face is sexual failures, which leads to social and societal rejection. In Sula, Sula is characterized by her lack of adherence to conventional sexual norms. She subscribes to a personal philosophy that she must be free, that a monogamous relationship is boring and restricting and she must reject that to remain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Human Flaws In The Book Of Genesis Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Torah, is for many people a book of innocent stories about the Creation, and the noble Patriarchs that follow the will of God. However, Genesis has much more to provide to humankind than stories; whether or not one takes Genesis as history, it does give insight into the lives and customs of the primeval Jewish people. Fundamentally, the Book of Genesis focuses on the family. The Book follows the descendants of Adam through the Patriarchs, offering a look into each family, and the dynamics surrounding them. Genesis, and much of the Torah, are unique in that it portrays the Lord's chosen not as upright and noble people, but people with deep, distinctly human flaws, flaws that many families today can relate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Based on the comparison of Genesis' monogamous and polygamous relationships, the culture of the patriarchs valued heirs above all. Whether or not the people of that culture took the concept of a one–man–one–woman marriage as tradition, or something to be valued, it is clear that the format of a marriage does not matter when heirs are at stake. Genesis states that "Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael," meaning Sarah gave Abraham to Hagar after a monogamous marriage of many decades (16:16) Now, as Sarah obviously felt jealousy, the need for an heir to Abraham's name bore greater weight than their relationship. As seen in the story of Lot and his daughters, the need for an heir even drove some to commit incest, an act most likely seen as indecent. The desire for sons is what partially prompted Leah and Rachel to fight. In addition, the concept of the heir relates to the repeated use of "generations" and genealogy chapters in the book, emphasizing Genesis' focus on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Marriage By David Popenoe And Barbara Dafoe Whitehead... Marriage: a fairy tale where every moment leads to happiness and everlasting love. In the article "What's Happening to Marriage?" the authors David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead reverse the fairy tale of marriage. The article conveys a different aspect of marriage that marriage is weakening and divorce is on the rise. The authors believe men and women of this time have more struggles when marrying one another than when their parents or grandparents got married. The authors' arguments are well supported, but their use of fallacies outweighs their theories. David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead claim that in today's society marriage is becoming more of a trust issue than previously thought. They believe marriages have none of these elements: "...an economic bond of mutual dependency; a social bond supported by the extended family and larger community; and a spiritual bond upheld by religious doctrine, observance and faith" (520). Marriage is becoming more of a "couples relationship" and losing meaning in society's culture; therefore, the rate of divorce is increasing causing people to be cautious of marriage. Popenoe and Whitehead use numerous statistics about divorce rate; however, they only examine the women's point of view. According to the authors, this is not the first time marriage has gone to the dumps and recovered causing the authors to delay on writing marriage's obituary. The authors of the article value a considerable amount of appeals that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pros And Cons Of Divorce Reform In the first part of this essay, we will examine if the current law on divorce should be reformed to allow people to break up without having to blame each other and without a two year wait. We will discuss the current law and assess the advantages and possible disadvantages as to whether the law on divorce should be reformed. Marriage or civil partnerships between two people creates a legal status which legally enforceable rights begin. If a couple wanted to terminate this legal status, they would need a divorce or dissolution (Probert, 2015). The basis on which a divorce can be accepted has progressively relaxed over the years, subsequent to this, the number of divorces has risen (Probert, 2015). A monogamous relationship is traditionally characterised by two individuals who have dependent children or also as a 'nuclear family.' Monogamy is a hetero–normative practice that involves two individuals in a relationship; the couple is not engaged in extramarital intimacy. Nuclear families also fall under this practice. Polyamory is a non–monogamous practice that refers to multiple intimate partners and experiences. Scholars have continued to argue the success of monogamous relationships. Harville Hendrix (1990) explains that monogamy is a healing practice. Partners in monogamous relationships go through many stages and struggles as a committed couple. Through struggle, partners act as healers that help to work through each other's suffering (Hendrix 1990). Hendrix (1990) believes individuals choose their partners to work through the pain together and help them grow through life. Monogamous marriage is a spiritual path to happiness and commitment between two individuals (Hendrix 1990). A committed relationship requires monogamy, and Hendrix (1990) contends that healthy and spiritual commitments encourage the sustainability of monogamous relationships. Although Hendrix (1990) contends that monogamy is an effective practice, research has largely built a case around the consequences of monogamous relationships. Debates have circled around the experiences within nuclear families and monogamous relationships, and Stelbourn (1999) proclaims it is a largely patriarchal practice. Stelbourn (1999) uses Engel's work during the eighteenth century, to explain the still–existent contemporary debate around the consequences of monogamy. The work of Friedrich Engels (Stelbourn 1999) focused on the division between mothers as housewives, and fathers as workers in nuclear families. Women were reduced in power and ... • 72. Monogamy In American Culture In American culture, relationships, commitment, and sex are synonymous with monogamy. However, this is not always the case. Monogamy is defined by Merriam–Webster as "the state or practice of being married to only one person at a time" or "of having only one sexual partner during a period of time." Alternatively, polyamory is defined as "the state or practice of having more than one open romantic relationship at a time." The word polyamory derives from both Greek (poly) and Latin (amory) roots and can be directly translated to mean "many loves." This is an idea of which popularity has risen a great deal in mainstream media over the last couple of decades. To the average American, monogamy represents a normal part of life. This is relevant because it gives a new perspective on how non–monogamous relationships can be arranged. The tendencies to rely on deceit or lies to cover up infidelity are no longer an issue. As people tend to grow up, we get to know the feeling of attraction and being in love towards the opposite sex. • 78. The Emperor Is Wearing No Clothes, By Mark Henkal Mark Henkal is the self–described National Polygamy Advocate. In his speech "The Emperor is Wearing No Clothes," he argues the case of why Christian polygamy should be accepted. He uses four main points to get his opinion across: grace–law hypocrisy, polygamists in the Bible, the meaning of adultery and one flesh, and prohibitions of leaders in the Bible. An individual with little to no Biblical knowledge might find that his argument makes sense. Just listening to the speech, without any critical thinking involved, might even persuade those with slightly more Biblical knowledge. Although outwardly he may seem to make solid arguments, there is much more to the polygamy argument than he brought forth. The first justification for polygamy that he presents is that it was not banned, but was regulated under the law, therefore causing polygamy to be an accepted form of lifestyle. The verses given to support this claim are Exodus 21:10, "If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing, and marital rights," and Deuteronomy 21:15, "if a man has two wives...," but there are issues with how these verses are being used. The Bible is not addressing the issue of polygamy in these verses. They are being taken out of context and bent to please the will of one man; the former is under the context of servants and the latter is about the rights of the firstborn son. Based on this, I would say that this point invalid and not worth further discussion. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
