This document evaluates how a media product represents particular social groups. The creator aimed their pop music magazine at older teenagers aged 16-19. To represent this social group, the magazine uses sophisticated black and white photos with minimal colors rather than bright colorful images typically seen in magazines for younger audiences. The photos show strong poses and feature themes like tour rumors that would interest older teenagers. While mainly targeting females interested in pop music gossip and fashion, the magazine also appeals to males fans of pop music with its subtle color scheme of black, grey, white and pink rather than overly feminine colors.
3. Similarities
• Although these pictures are mostly different there are a few similarities
also. Throughout my music magazine I have used Selena Gomez as an
inspiration as she is a idol of many girls and is a huge well known pop
artist. In my magazine ‘Sian’ is also portray as a pop artist. These are
similar as the pose is striking. Both artists are looking over their shoulder
at the audience. In both images the artists have both got ‘wind swept’ hair
which is messy leaving the audience feel intrigued – maybe they offer a
new personality to the ‘pop’ industry and something new and exciting?
The artists are also wear dresses, this shows their elegance yet daring
attitude as their poses and hair says different; dominant and strong
females. The shots used in the image is also similar. They are both close
ups. I think that this gives the feel of wanting to know more.
4. Differences
• There are also many differences with this image.
‘Sian’ is wearing a very dark coloured dress and
‘Selena’ is wear a more feminine dress, conveying
pop. If I was to do the shoot again I would
defiantly of used more colourful imagery and
clothing. The image of ‘Selena’ was used in a
photo shoot from one of her pop music videos. In
the image of Selena Gomez her hair is ‘wind
swept’ although it is put back off her face.
Although, with Sian I decided to let it fall
wherever.
6. Similarities
• The images here both use a wide-shot of the artists. Again, the poses
that the artists are using are strong poses that automatically grab the
audience. Although, image is in black and white and the image of
Selena is in colour the colours in both are both dark, earthy colours.
The colours used in each photo; the mise-en-scene link well to the
colour of the dresses and make- up used. Sian has a white dress and
dark lipstick which links well with the colour theme of black and white.
The image of pop star Selena Gomez is set in a desert; she is wearing
browns and nudes through the use of clothing and make up. These
images are therefore similar in that way as the artist fits in well with
the colour themes of both images. Both of the artists are displayed
with loose curls; this shows elegancy and how natural they both are.
7. Differences
• In these two images there are more
similarities than differences. In my image;
‘Sian’ is wearing a floral headband. This
represents ‘pop’ as the genre is seen to create
a happy vibe within the audiences. However,
the other image of ‘Selena’ is very minimal
and natural.
8. Targeted Social Group
• I created my magazine for people to enjoy,
consume and read about positive things
happening in the music industry. Of course when
making a magazine you have to have a social
group in mind – I have aimed my magazine at
working class older teenagers from the ages
between 16-19. This is not saying that anyone
else will be unable to have an interest in my
magazine as music is there to enjoy by anybody
and music brings us all together and this is
exactly what I was aiming to achieve.
9. Images – How they represent social
groups
• I feel as though my images are very professional as I used a white
background and edited them into black and white. They are not the
sort of images you would see in a young children's, young teenagers
pop magazine as they are not bursting with colour. The reason for
my images is that I wanted to create something different – a
sophisticated approach the pop genre. This is why my magazine is
targeted at older teenagers 16-19. I have asked some of my friends
what sort of thing they would look for in a pop magazine that would
interest them. The majority of them said that they don't enjoy
doing the ‘How good of a friend are you’ quizzes etc, as much as
they did when they were younger. They wanted a pop magazine
that would bring a ‘grown-up’ vibe but still include all their favourite
pop artists. My images represent an older social group who would
look for tour and gig updates; this is why i included ‘tour rumours'.
Older teenagers are able to go to concerts and tours and enjoy
finding out about this and festivals and still enjoy the music.
10. Colour Scheme – How it links with
social groups.
• My colour scheme is black, grey, white and pink. I think that this
represents the older teenager social group as they do not want a
magazine that is full of feminine colours but something that is
subtle but also has a splash of colour. Firstly, I had chosen black,
grey, white and red. When I put this into practise I decided that the
red made my magazine look like a ‘rock’ magazine and this wasn't
the social group I was aiming for. My magazine is mainly aimed at
females as they are more aware of the gossip happening within
famous artists lives and fashion tips. Although, I didn't want to
single out the boys; my magazine can also be aimed at boys that
have an interest in pop music. However, I do believe that the
majority of my audience will be girls as the main colour is pink;
which comes off as a more feminine and soft colour.
