The document provides details on the design elements of magazine covers and pages for Rolling Stone, Billboard, and other music magazines. On the Rolling Stone front cover, Adele's face draws readers in to learn about her personal life struggles under fame. The contents page uses different fonts, images and text sizes to highlight important stories. A double page spread focuses on Adele with a close-up black and white image and descriptive text. The Billboard cover features Beyonce's image to represent a perfect lifestyle and career. Its contents page uses colors and images, including a man walking away, to pull readers through the magazine. A double page article employs purple, white and grey colors and short sentences for its target audience.
2. Front Cover
The masthead is red because it demonstrates their logo, this makes it easier to recognise. Red is
associated with fire, energy, passion, love and strength. It has also been written in a serif along with
the main cover lines, this makes the text easier to read. The less important cover lines are in a sans
serif font, this is more modern and harder to read than a serif font. The cover of this edition of Rolling
Stones magazine features Adele the singer, the main cover line which is attached to Adele reads
“Adele, heartbreak superstar”, this shows that someone has dug into her personal life for a story
suitable for their music magazine. Her face on the cover draws people in because he has a pretty
looking and nicely shaped face and can relate to real life circumstances. It shows that under the
fame she is an ordinary person who deals with the same problems that face everyone else. Adele is
directly addressing the audience, she is wearing minimal including dark eyeliner around the eyes to
make them stand out, she also has blusher to help make her cheek bones stand out, this makes her
face look a slightly different shape and makes other parts of her face stand out more. Her hair is
made to look messy and big taking up a lot of the page. This makes it easier to see the cover lines
because the colours work against each other (her hair and the white text) so it makes the text easier
to read from a distance. One of the other cover lines “The real housewives of wall street”. Wall street
is a big stock exchange in America, So the article is about the housewives of the workers of wall
street, (they tend to be very rich). Another article is about Bill Maher who is an American comedian,
writer, producer and media critic. There isn’t very much writing on the cover, it includes little
punctuation because the sentences are so short. The cover shows four stories including the main
story about Adele which is very clear. The Rolling Stones magazine consists of all genres of music, this
means there is a large target audience, but it is aimed at young adults more than anyone.
3. Contents Page
This page has carried the red theme over from the front cover, for the masthead. The mast head is in a
red box, with a serif typeface, white text. This is to keep the energy and passion of the magazine of the
magazine up with colours, and to keep people interested. All the text on this page is of a serif typeface,
which means that it is an older font style, it is also easier to read. There are two typefaces on this page,
one for the text and another for the page folios. There are also different size text for different importance
of information. There are three different images on this page, the first image is of a rock singer, the
second is of a classical singer and the third is the president of the USA Barack Obama. The third image
shows power over something else or something bigger such as a country. The second image is black
and white showing that it is old-fashioned, the page also uses serif typeface which is also an old-
fashioned font style. Whereas the first image is a more modern and alert style image. The first person has
bright red hair showing energy and passion, the second is wearing a hat and glasses showing the more
sophisticated look, the third person is wearing a suit and tie showing that he is powerful, this page gives
off three different impressions via the images. There are a lot of words on this page, there is more written
about the bigger stories to get people interested and able to see what the stories consist of. The folios
and stories have been split up into categories of what they are about, so everything is easy to find.
(such as features, national affairs and department). The text on the page is big enough to read up
close, the cover lines and folios stand out the most on the page so you can spot what is where and find
it easily. The cover lines are not written in sentences, they are quick and snappy because, people are
lazy when they read and so short and snappy sentences are easier to read. There is then more of an
explanation to give more depth into what each story consists of. There is a lot going on, I don’t know
where to look. My eyes are drawn towards the first and third pictures along with a lot of the text.
4. Double Page Spread
This page has a black and white theme, The black and white makes her features stand out more. Including her eyes.
Black and white show a less developed time, where beauty was focused on more than colour. The double page
spread has been split in two. One half of the double page spread is covered with a picture of Adele’s face, this is to
show off the beauty in her face. Then the other side has both the mast head on the top half of the page and the
text on the bottom so we can clearly see what the article is about. The image of Adele has been used as the article
is about her. She has messy hair because its not stereotypical to look slightly messy, she also does not have the
stereotypical body for a singer, but she has a pretty looking face, so that is why a close up shot has been used.
Showing her with messy hair relates to the audience because it shows that even a famous pop singer is not perfect.
She isn’t directly addressing the audience she is looking towards the right, out of the frame, it is a lot like the image
on the front cover, and her hair takes up a lot of the focus due to the fact that it is so big and messy. Her face also
draws some focus as the light is reflecting off it, making it lighter, the dark around her eyes brings out the lighter
colours more prominently. All the writing used is in a serif typeface, which makes it easier to read. There is a capital
drop letter to show the beginning of the paragraph. There are two fonts one for the mast head and the main text
along with another for extra information too, this allows the reader to see which parts of the text are most important.
This allows the audience to see that they are reading about different subjects about the one story. The text used is
quite a big size so there is less text thank it looks like as people don’t like to read large amounts in one go, as the eye
likes white space. The text apart from quotes is in third person. Showing that it was written about her by someone
who researched the subject. Adele herself pulls a lot of my focus as the light has reflected off her face lightening up
the black and white page. Then the mast head on the page also pulls me in not as much but I can read it from a
distance. Whereas the smaller text doesn’t stand out as much which is good because it doesn’t detract from her.
6. Front Cover
The cover shows a black and white image to show an old fashioned effect with a black sans serif
font with red, yellow, blue and green enclosed in some of the letters. Red is passion and energy,
yellow is not brave and cowardly, green is young or unripe and blue means sad or depressed. The
image show Beyonce on the right part of the page and leaves enough space on the left of the
page for all the cover lines. All the text used is of a sans serif typeface which is a more modern style
of font which is harder to read. This suggests that it is a very modern magazine. The audience love
music and therefore are more likely to go for the more stereotypical singers. She has the perfect
face, hair, nails, and eyes. Everyone would want to look like her. Beyonce, represents the perfect
lifestyle along with the fame and good looks. She is directly addressing the audience, drawing
attention to the magazine. She has little to no makeup on, so therefore is not overpowered by false
beauty. The image is very plain but beautiful apart from the bracelet which provides the sparkle,
which shows perfection. Billboard the mast head suggests that there is gossip, information and
advertisement will be inside. Beyonce show perfection and the dream lifestyle and looks along with
a fabulous music carrier. The main cover line and masthead are visible at a distance, this means
that they are very eye catching and help stand out from the colourless page. There is little text on
the cover but the text that has been used is short and snappy so that it is more eye catching for the
audience. There is little punctuation because the cover lines are so short and aren’t real sentences.
The mast head stands out because it contains four bright colours that represent a lot of different
feelings and emotions. Then Beyonce stands out because she takes up most of the page, in only
black and white. This magazine is aimed at sixteen to thirty year olds, young adults.
7. Contents Page
There is small strips of blue which means sad or depressed, along small snips of other colours
relating to the folios. The cover lines are also written in the blue used throughout the rest of the
contents page. All the text on this page is a sans serif type face. This shows that the magazine has
a modern look and is modern as the sans serif type face is a modern type of font and not as easy
to read. There are four images on this page, there is a cartoon to represent fun and excitement as
typical animated characters are funny. Then a man with trees in the background shows a crisp
image, facing out of the frame, is a dreamy figure that women idolise wants you to follow him to
the next page. The man is a dreamy figure that people connect with therefore as he is walking out
of the frame, and getting the audience to follow him pulling them into the rest of the magazine.
There are a lot of words on this page, there is a folio and a page title for each page, so is very
detailed and can go to the page that interest you most first. The main stories then have more
detail about them in the centre of the page but it is still short, and drops interesting names and
phrases to take people to those pages. There are lots of words on this page and so the longer
sentences consist of interesting names and phrases to catch people’s attention. This page is very
busy and therefore my eyes don’t know where to look as there is so much going on. The page
information on the left of the page is very distracting because it is so colourful and the man walking
out of the frame also takes my attention along with the other images and blue text.
8. Double Page Spread
There are three main colours on this page which are purple, white and grey. The white is associated
with light, goodness, innocence, purity and virginity, grey is associated with cool, balanced and
neutral colour. Purple is associated with wealth, royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. The font
used is a sans serif more modern font because this makes the magazine more modern and appeal to
their target audience more. The modern typeface makes it harder to read but there is plenty of blank
space to make up for that. She represents ideal because she is perfect and beautiful a woman, she
has the life that so many dream of which appeals to so many who look up to her. She is directly
addressing the audience so therefore she pulls a lot of the focus, she is wearing more make up around
her eyes which draws you in, to make direct contact with her eyes too. The sentences tend to be short
and don’t use to complicated words so that a person of the target audience can read it and is more
likely to understand. There is a lot of blank space on the page so that it looks appealing to those who
are more likely to read the article and so they don’t get bored half way through, their eyes can cope
with the smaller amount of words and big amount of space. The mast head is very eye catching
especially the word fiercely as it is a big, strong word that drags the reader in immediately. The
sentences are shorter so young people can read it without getting board, and there aren’t very
complicated words so they are more likely to understand. It has 3 main parts the mast head, image
and text the image is the biggest and most eye catching, the mast head is next as it drives over the
pink in a white sans serif typeface, then the text which doesn’t really stand out very much but you can
see it is there so it’s not over power showing that everything has been worked out perfectly.
