Artificial Eye
Values of Artificial Eye:
'Curzon Artificial Eye has been committed to distributing the best in independent and world
cinema since its foundation in 1976.' -Artificial Eye Facebook page
Exhibition and Consumption:
'Curzon Cinemas first opened their doors to cinema-goers in 1934 at the Curzon Mayfair and now has 11
cinemas nationwide' - Artificial Eye Website
'Since its foundation in 1976, Curzon Artificial Eye has been releasing critically acclaimed films to discerning UK audiences
by some of the world's greatest directors.' - Artificial Eye Website
Artificial Eye specializes in independent films and does not usually exhibit in cinema chains such as Vue or Odeon.
Target Audience:
Seeing as Artificial Eye focuses on independent films the target audience would be film fanatics who are willing to go to
small cinemas that are few and far to see the film. Many of the films made by Artificial Eye are similar in genre and also
have some similarities in themes such as poverty, the target audience would therefore include people who are
interested in gritty subjects and want to see films where the characters are in dire circumstances. Social Realism
independent films are aimed at a niche audience as they do not have a big budget so will not be attracting a huge
audience.

Verve Pictures
Values of Verve Pictures:
'We are passionate about film and discovering new talent, and are committed to releasing
films that have become increasingly lost in today’s multiplex culture.'
Exhibition and Consumption:
Verve Pictures specialize in releasing thought provoking film into cinemas and onto DVD
from the UK and around the world.
Over 75% of Verve releases are from first time feature directors so this gives a lot of directors a chance to release
something they worked hard on with the help of a distributor.
Target Audience:
Due to the fact that films are released by Verve in cinemas and on DVD it brings together a larger
collective audience and more revenue for the filmmakers. The target audience is not as niche
because the films are distributed and exhibited in more places. In Bullet Boy and Red Road there
is a common theme of crime. In Red Road and The Arbor there is a common theme of drug abuse
and drug use.

Vertigo Films
Values of Vertigo Films:
'The company’s mission is to create and distribute commercially driven independent cinema,' Vertigo
Films prides itself on being at the forefront of new talent.
Exhibition and Consumption:
Since inception it has produced 28 films and distributed a further 35.
The Films span a range of genres and audience taste and include the box office smash hit
Streetdance 3D, the biggest independent UK DVD of all time.
Target Audience:
The target audience for Vertigo Films is wider due to the many different genres they cover, this covers many
age groups and means that the audience are more likely to watch another Vertigo film if they enjoy the first
one. As there are many genres covered by Vertigo Films some may appeal to teenage and young adult age
groups, some may appeal to older age groups such as middle aged adults and some may appeal to all age
groups so therefore people can have a red interest in a Vertigo film. There is a common theme in both films of
violence and a common representation of Class & Status and Age.

Pathé Distribution
Values of Pathé Distribution:
'With a reputation built on independence, innovation and quality, Pathé is the world's longest established film
company, and now encompasses a diverse range of media and entertainment interests.' - Pathé Distribution
Website
Exhibition and Consumption:
'Following the takeover of Gaumont Theatres, Pathé is continental Europe's leading cinema exhibitor, with
over 1000 screens in France, The Netherlands and Switzerland. Pathé is one of the leading distributors and
producers of films in France.'
Target Audience:
Due to the fact that Pathé have it's own screens across Europe the target audience is a lot larger which
means that the films are able to become more well - known by more people. Pathé distributes a lot more
genres than a lot of Social Realism distributors because it is the largest distributor of film. In the Social
Realism films they have distributed there are similarities such as the themes of death and grief, and the
areas of representation such as Age, Class & Status and Regionality which are all representations seen in
Ratcatcher and Adulthood and many other Pathé films.
• Last resort created by Artificial Eye, Bullet Boy created by Verve Pictures and London to
Brighton created by Vertigo Films all focus on the theme of British identity. Although all of the
films focus on British identity, they are very different in the ways they do so.
• Last Resort focuses on British identity in the derelict areas of Britain and how the non – British
natives are treated so much worse and have the lower income jobs that nobody else wants,
they are treated as people who don’t belong and are outsiders in the country.
• Bullet Boy focuses on black British identity in East London and how black British people are
treated after committing crimes. It aims to show that black people are perceived badly by the
public and what people are like in the crime ridden areas of London.
• London to Brighton makes the audience understand British identity in the form of the
treatment of women by abusive men and how they are sexualised from a really young age by
doing nothing wrong.
• All three films are similar in the ways of real locations and a better sense of verisimilitude than
mainstream films, they give the audience a chance to relate to the film and understand the
issues at hand.
My Film: The woman who was never seen
Themes/Issues: Fear, Agoraphobia,Trauma,
Mugging
Characters: Olivia (Agoraphobic)
Genre: Drama
Representation: Disability (mental), Age (her fear
constricts her instead of her being able to do
normal activities)
Target Audience: People who identify with the
issue being talked about, people who know
someone that suffers with Agoraphobia, and
people that want to learn more about the issue as it
is not very well - known.
Which company should distribute my film: I think
thatVertigo Films would distribute my film because
they cover many genres of film and my film does
not have a common theme with any of the films
from the other distribution companies.
Links
• My film has similarities with London to Brighton and Shotgun Stories as there is a
representation of age in both my films and both of those films which focuses on adults
with issues rather than young teenagers. Both London to Brighton and my film have
adults struggling through traumatic issues and not speaking out about them. Both fears
the adults have are keeping them from leading an enjoyable life and trusting people.
• Both of the Vertigo films I have mentioned and my own film use real locations to create a
feeling of verisimilitude that is communicated to the audience in the film. They also use
untrained actors that make the action a lot more gritty, it is not professional and
therefore it is easier for the performance to be realistic. By the films having a low budget
it creates naturalism for the audience because the director and producer can only use
the little money they have to create something that they can release and therefore they
cannot hire big actors, studios or advertise and release their films in multiplex cinemas.
By having a low budget the director can only use a minimal amount of props, costume
and actors because the films are independent and there is not as much interest in them.
This is similar to my film because I had no budget for my film I asked one of my friends to
act in it, I filmed in my own home and used props that I could find around my own home.
Links
• My intro is different however to both London to Brighton and Shotgun
stories because in both of those intros they use dialogue to set the scene of
what is happening at the time the film starts. Whereas my film does not
include any dialogue or diegetic sound and instead uses my character’s
actions as a means of communicating her personality to the audience.
• My intro links to the other social realism intros made by Vertigo films than
any other distributor because in the other distributors’ intros there are
themes of issues such as police brutality and immigration which does not
fit the themes of my intro at all. The links between the Vertigo Films intro
for London to Brighton are the character type of an antagonist, even
though in my intro the antagonist is not shown the people who mugged
Olivia and caused her to develop this mental illness are antagonists
because they caused it.

  • 3. Artificial Eye Values of Artificial Eye: 'Curzon Artificial Eye has been committed to distributing the best in independent and world cinema since its foundation in 1976.' -Artificial Eye Facebook page Exhibition and Consumption: 'Curzon Cinemas first opened their doors to cinema-goers in 1934 at the Curzon Mayfair and now has 11 cinemas nationwide' - Artificial Eye Website 'Since its foundation in 1976, Curzon Artificial Eye has been releasing critically acclaimed films to discerning UK audiences by some of the world's greatest directors.' - Artificial Eye Website Artificial Eye specializes in independent films and does not usually exhibit in cinema chains such as Vue or Odeon. Target Audience: Seeing as Artificial Eye focuses on independent films the target audience would be film fanatics who are willing to go to small cinemas that are few and far to see the film. Many of the films made by Artificial Eye are similar in genre and also have some similarities in themes such as poverty, the target audience would therefore include people who are interested in gritty subjects and want to see films where the characters are in dire circumstances. Social Realism independent films are aimed at a niche audience as they do not have a big budget so will not be attracting a huge audience.

  • 5. Verve Pictures Values of Verve Pictures: 'We are passionate about film and discovering new talent, and are committed to releasing films that have become increasingly lost in today’s multiplex culture.' Exhibition and Consumption: Verve Pictures specialize in releasing thought provoking film into cinemas and onto DVD from the UK and around the world. Over 75% of Verve releases are from first time feature directors so this gives a lot of directors a chance to release something they worked hard on with the help of a distributor. Target Audience: Due to the fact that films are released by Verve in cinemas and on DVD it brings together a larger collective audience and more revenue for the filmmakers. The target audience is not as niche because the films are distributed and exhibited in more places. In Bullet Boy and Red Road there is a common theme of crime. In Red Road and The Arbor there is a common theme of drug abuse and drug use.

  • 7. Vertigo Films Values of Vertigo Films: 'The company’s mission is to create and distribute commercially driven independent cinema,' Vertigo Films prides itself on being at the forefront of new talent. Exhibition and Consumption: Since inception it has produced 28 films and distributed a further 35. The Films span a range of genres and audience taste and include the box office smash hit Streetdance 3D, the biggest independent UK DVD of all time. Target Audience: The target audience for Vertigo Films is wider due to the many different genres they cover, this covers many age groups and means that the audience are more likely to watch another Vertigo film if they enjoy the first one. As there are many genres covered by Vertigo Films some may appeal to teenage and young adult age groups, some may appeal to older age groups such as middle aged adults and some may appeal to all age groups so therefore people can have a red interest in a Vertigo film. There is a common theme in both films of violence and a common representation of Class & Status and Age.

Pathé is one of the leading distributors and producers of films in France.' Target Audience: Due to the fact that Pathé have it's own screens across Europe the target audience is a lot larger which means that the films are able to become more well - known by more people. Pathé distributes a lot more genres than a lot of Social Realism distributors because it is the largest distributor of film. In the Social Realism films they have distributed there are similarities such as the themes of death and grief, and the areas of representation such as Age, Class & Status and Regionality which are all representations seen in Ratcatcher and Adulthood and many other Pathé films.
  • 10. • Last resort created by Artificial Eye, Bullet Boy created by Verve Pictures and London to Brighton created by Vertigo Films all focus on the theme of British identity. Although all of the films focus on British identity, they are very different in the ways they do so. • Last Resort focuses on British identity in the derelict areas of Britain and how the non – British natives are treated so much worse and have the lower income jobs that nobody else wants, they are treated as people who don’t belong and are outsiders in the country. • Bullet Boy focuses on black British identity in East London and how black British people are treated after committing crimes. It aims to show that black people are perceived badly by the public and what people are like in the crime ridden areas of London. • London to Brighton makes the audience understand British identity in the form of the treatment of women by abusive men and how they are sexualised from a really young age by doing nothing wrong. • All three films are similar in the ways of real locations and a better sense of verisimilitude than mainstream films, they give the audience a chance to relate to the film and understand the issues at hand.
  • 11. My Film: The woman who was never seen Themes/Issues: Fear, Agoraphobia,Trauma, Mugging Characters: Olivia (Agoraphobic) Genre: Drama Representation: Disability (mental), Age (her fear constricts her instead of her being able to do normal activities) Target Audience: People who identify with the issue being talked about, people who know someone that suffers with Agoraphobia, and people that want to learn more about the issue as it is not very well - known. Which company should distribute my film: I think thatVertigo Films would distribute my film because they cover many genres of film and my film does not have a common theme with any of the films from the other distribution companies.
  • 12. Links • My film has similarities with London to Brighton and Shotgun Stories as there is a representation of age in both my films and both of those films which focuses on adults with issues rather than young teenagers. Both London to Brighton and my film have adults struggling through traumatic issues and not speaking out about them. Both fears the adults have are keeping them from leading an enjoyable life and trusting people. • Both of the Vertigo films I have mentioned and my own film use real locations to create a feeling of verisimilitude that is communicated to the audience in the film. They also use untrained actors that make the action a lot more gritty, it is not professional and therefore it is easier for the performance to be realistic. By the films having a low budget it creates naturalism for the audience because the director and producer can only use the little money they have to create something that they can release and therefore they cannot hire big actors, studios or advertise and release their films in multiplex cinemas. By having a low budget the director can only use a minimal amount of props, costume and actors because the films are independent and there is not as much interest in them. This is similar to my film because I had no budget for my film I asked one of my friends to act in it, I filmed in my own home and used props that I could find around my own home.
  • 13. Links • My intro is different however to both London to Brighton and Shotgun stories because in both of those intros they use dialogue to set the scene of what is happening at the time the film starts. Whereas my film does not include any dialogue or diegetic sound and instead uses my character’s actions as a means of communicating her personality to the audience. • My intro links to the other social realism intros made by Vertigo films than any other distributor because in the other distributors’ intros there are themes of issues such as police brutality and immigration which does not fit the themes of my intro at all. The links between the Vertigo Films intro for London to Brighton are the character type of an antagonist, even though in my intro the antagonist is not shown the people who mugged Olivia and caused her to develop this mental illness are antagonists because they caused it.
