2. Kanye West - Graduation
On the front and back cover for Kanye West’s Graduation, it shows an illustration by
Japanese contempory artist Takashi Murakami which shows the “Dropout bear” being
launched out of university after finally graduating. The front and back covers are the
same and shows the bear being shot in the same direction. There are many colours
used in this artwork which links to the cartoon style.
3. Kanye West - Graduation
The inside of the digipak shows the journey the Dropout Bear had to go through to get
to his graduation ceremony. The artwork gradually goes from being dark to light when
he finally gets there, this suggests that the album is a about a journey to becoming
successful for Kanye. The artwork is not stereotypical for a hip hop cover because is
doesn’t portray a “tough image”, however, it does show a “rags to riches” type of story
which is a genre convention. The artwork being created by a popular artist specifically
for this physical album might convince people to buy this digipak over buying the
album digitally.
4. Kanye West - Graduation
The digipak for Graduation
also came with a double sided
poster: on one side the album
cover and on the other side,
the image to the left. This is
another incentive to purchase
the digipak for this album.
5. Gorillaz - Demon Days
The front cover for the digipak
for Gorillaz – Demon Days shows
the main member of the virtual
band and folds out to reveal the
other three band members and
the alternate faces on the other
side. This allows buyers and fans
of Gorillaz to customize their
album by choosing which
member they want on the front
cover. The regular album art is
the same four main images
shown in a grid. The cover(s) fit
with the style of the band
because they are drawn by real
life member Jamie Hewlett who
creates almost every Gorillaz
album cover and music video.
6. Gorillaz - Demon Days
The digipak includes a booklet which contains drawings representing the different
songs on the album. Some of the illustrations are in different art styles but all of
them consistently have some cartoons drawn by Jamie Hewlett on them. This will
appeal to fans of Gorillaz in general and fans of Hewlett’s other works such as the
comic Tank Girl.
7. Gorillaz - Demon Days
The back cover is a plain background,
similar to the front covers. The band
members are to the right and the track
listing is to the left. The back also shows
what is on the exclusive DVD that comes
with the digipak. The back also reveals
that the digipak allows you special access
to a part of their website to download
wallpapers and a screensaver as well as a
special bonus track.
8. Gorillaz - Demon Days
The poster promoting Demon Days is very
simple and is just the album cover
extended to show the title of the album in
much larger text so people can see the
name from a farther distance. The bottom
of the poster also shows the release date
in bold text and the editions of the album
available to buy. The poster advertises the
very popular single “Feel Good Inc.” to
show people that that song was on the
album to make them buy it.
9. Björk - Biophillia (live)
For the live album version of
Biophillia, the cover shows Björk in
the wig worn on the cover of the
original album. The cover also
shows the Biophillia logo in the top
left which appears on the regular
version of the album as well as the
remix versions, both of these things
link the album to the main album to
make it recognizable to fans. The
image is also a photograph from
one of her live shows linking it to
being a live album.
10. Björk - Biophillia (live)
The inside fold of the album shows an image of Björk performing and another
of a photograph of a wall with writing on. The album packaging is trying to
create a “live” and exclusive experience for the buyer by showing them
unseen and behind the scenes photographs showing how the album was
made and it being performed.
11. Björk - Biophillia (live)
The discs are plain silver with Biophillia live printed on with the number of the
disc. The discs contain live performances of songs from the original album
plus more. The album also comes with a DVD that has videos of the
performances exclusive to this physical digipak.
The digipak comes with a booklet with images of the instruments used to
make the album and credits for each song.
12. Björk - Biophillia (live)
The back album has another
image from one of Björk's live
performances with the name of
the album over the top of it
ö
which the front of the digipak is missing. The back of the digipak also shows
the tracklisting for each CD and the DVD.
13. Björk - Biophillia (live)
The poster for Biophillia Live is
the same as the album cover but
an extended rectangular picture
which also gives it space to fit the
name of the album.
14. Björk - Vulnicura
The front cover of the digipak shows
Björk in an elaborate costume, the cover
is simple but strange, you can tell that it
is experimental music but the focus on
the main artist and also the bright
colours could show this as being a pop
album.
The back cover says Björk in a stange
alien-like type, this fits with the alien-like
costume on the front cover and the
abstract blob behind the text. The
tracklisting is shown in small type above
the image, this may mean the style of
the packaging is very important to the
artist
15. Björk - Vulnicura
The inside of the digipak shows an alternative
image of the album cover and unfolded
shows the title of the album in the abstract
style of typography and the credits for the
album. The colour is white with some yellow
gradients throughout the whole digipak to
keep a consistent style. The disc has a
simplified version of the shape that appears
on the back and middle of the digipak.
16. Björk - Vulnicura
The digipak comes with a booklet showing
the title of each song in the main font and
showing the lyrics around it. On the back of
the booklet there is a “handwritten” note
from Björk where she thanks friends and
family.
